Amy Ruppel is an illustrator and artist whose lifelong fascination with science and nature continues to inspire her creative work. Raised in rural Plymouth, Wisconsin, she developed an early appreciation for the natural world, which remains a central theme across her diverse portfolio—including digital illustration, painting, drawing, and printmaking. Now based in Portland, Oregon, Amy works and plays daily with paint and pencil in hand. Her art is known for its hopeful, healing spirit, seen most meaningfully in environments she’s created for children’s hospitals and clinics across the country. Amy’s public art also includes vibrant characters and murals for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), Ronald McDonald House in Portland, and the Deschutes Public Library—where she’s especially thrilled to see her whimsical rock characters come to life.

PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK
Miranda Baglien
PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST
Miranda joined Deschutes Public Library as a Public Services Specialist in November 2024. Although she’s a recent addition to the team, her connection to the library runs deep—she grew up visiting the Downtown Bend Library. “One of the things I love most about my job is seeing the impact of our free resources every single day,” Miranda says. “Libraries are among the greatest free resources available to the public.” Currently, her favorite book is The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science by Kate McKinnon. Like the author, Miranda has a passion for performance—she co-owned a Shakespearean theater company in town. Whether you’re discovering a new genre, using a public computer, or as Miranda recommends, reserving a Discovery Pass to explore local attractions in Deschutes County, there’s something for everyone at the library.
Duke Tufty
GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND
If you’re puzzled about whether you’re seeing a Common Goldeneye or a Bufflehead bobbing atop the water, you’re not alone. Birding offers a serene experience to observe and identify bird species—and now the library has a resource to help. The East Cascades Bird Alliance (ECBA) recently donated six birding kits to Deschutes Public Library, further expanding the Library of Things collection. This volunteer-run organization wanted to make birding accessible and they knew just where to look. “Libraries are perfectly equipped to make birding available to as broad a swath as possible,” says ECBA President Duke Tufty. The kits include one youth and one adult pair of binoculars and a field guide by local birding enthusiast Chuck Gates. “Modern birding incorporates useful mobile apps that can be downloaded to your phone,” says Duke. The expanding Library of Things Collection aims to engage youth with birding and conservation in Central Oregon. “Parents and children, teachers and students can share in the wonderment of birding while learning to preserve biodiversity and protect ecosystems for future generations,” he says.
Pebble, a two-year-old Labrador Retriever from Guide Dogs for the Blind, plays a vital role helping her handler navigate daily life in Central Oregon. The pair travels from their home outside of town several times a week to run errands, meet friends, and visit the library. “The library is our favorite place to visit because it gives me a chance to rest while my handler uses the computers or reads,” Pebble says. Their outings range from weaving through busy sidewalks to hiking remote country trails. The library also offers Pebble a break during a full day of activity, while she continues to learn patterning both indoors and around town. “I get a little kibble when I complete a task,” she adds. Pebble is more than a companion, she’s a trained guide, focused on her job and undistracted by people or animals. “If you see a guide dog like me, please ask before interacting,” Pebble reminds us. Her handler waited over two years for Pebble and their bond is clear. “When you don’t see well, a guide dog changes everything—we’re just having fun.”
