February/March 2026

Welcome

February is for lovers—of libraries! St. Valentine may get a day, but libraries get a whole month: Library Lovers’ Month. Libraries play a vital role in their communities, offering books, of course, but so much more. These community hubs offer classes and story times, access to meeting spaces and work areas, and a place for people to connect with each other and resources at no cost. This February, discover something new at your library. Take part in a class or lecture, check out something from the Library of Things, and learn more about what’s offered online (see page 16 for info about eBooks and digital audiobooks).

Bend

Libraries:

Update

In February we begin preparing the Downtown Bend Library for a robust remodel, the first since it opened to the public in 1998 when Bend’s population hovered near 35,000 people. This remodel will be the last in the series of bond projects, which included remodels of the La Pine, Sisters, and Sunriver Libraries, and the construction of new libraries in Redmond and east Bend (the new Central Library at Stevens Ranch opens in May). Turn to pages 14 and 15 for details about what’s happening with libraries in Bend.

PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK

STAFF PROFILE

Sheila Grier

COMMUNITY LIBRARIAN

Sheila has spent more than 26 years turning curiosity into confidence as a Community Librarian working with kids and early teens. Her favorite part of the job is placing the right book into the right hands.

“When a child’s eyes light up, or they come back and tell me it was an amazing book, it always makes me smile and know that I’ve helped spark the joy of reading,” says Sheila. She believes deeply in the mission of libraries as equalizers, offering free access to books, technology, and resources for people of every background. “I share with kids and families that not everyone can afford to buy books, computers, or possibly anything in our Library of Things collection, and this is why libraries exist.” When she’s unwinding, Sheila reaches for dark British or Irish crime mysteries. Fittingly, she started school to become an FBI agent before her career in libraries. Today, she puts those detective skills to work solving tricky research questions—one case at a time.

PRESENTER PROFILE

Cristina Morales

Cristina Morales is a mother of three, a business owner, and the founder of BENDitas, an organization that brings Spanish cultural events to the community. BENDitas was created from a need to have a welcoming space to speak her native language and connect with others through culture.

“BENDitas collaborates with local organizations, including the library, and is open to Spanish speakers or anyone who wants to practice and converse with native speakers,” says Cristina. She first came to the library for Family Story Time with her children and notes that while the library has books, it is just as important to provide information and resources to the community, especially for immigrants. “I think the library accompanies us through every stage of life,” says Cristina. “It was there for me as a child, as a student, and now as a mother, supporting my children through each stage. The library becomes part of your life. We should visit it more, like visiting a relative. Like an aunt, Aunt Library.”

Carol and Mylum

Carol and Mylum, her support worker, visit the Downtown Bend Library weekly. For more than a year, Mylum has helped Carol improve her reading and comprehension in this welcoming public space. Tackling book after book, Carol reads aloud while Mylum assists with pronunciation. “Sometimes kids ask why we are reading out loud, and I explain some people need a little extra help,” says Mylum. Together they read all nine books in the Little House on the Prairie series, all borrowed from the library. Carol loves a good challenge, which is why she’s now diving into the Murder She Wrote series. She’s more than halfway through the first book and enjoys reading near the children’s area, where the lively atmosphere and families create a comforting backdrop. Besides reading, Carol enjoys making diamond paintings, walking, and shopping. But the library remains her favorite place to learn and grow.

CUSTOMER PROFILE

The Downtown Bend Library Gets Ready for Its Glow Up

A bond approved by Deschutes County voters in 2020 paid for renovated libraries in La Pine, Sisters, and Sunriver, and a new library in Redmond. Here’s what’s happening in the last phase of bond-funded projects, which focuses on Bend.

In 2020, Deschutes County voters approved a bond to improve libraries across the county, including the Downtown Bend Library. Bond funds will provide for an extensive remodel of this library located in the heart of Bend—the first in its nearly 30-year life. Once it’s complete in spring 2027, you’ll find more space available to the public, as well as improved and updated amenities for a better library experience for everyone.

Construction work begins in April 2026, when the library will temporarily close to allow for this robust remodel. Beginning this winter, the Downtown Bend Library will transition to its temporary closure in phases, starting with the closure of the second floor on February 2.

Besides more room to enjoy and an improved browsing experience, you’ll find many special additions and resources in the newly remodeled Downtown Bend Library:

• MORE MULTI-PURPOSE MEETING ROOMS FOR PUBLIC USE

The remodeled Downtown Bend Library will have small rooms for studying and one-on-one meetings, as well as larger rooms for bigger groups. All rooms will be reservable, for free, by the public.

• COLLABORATIVE AND CO-WORKING AREA

Looking for a place to work? It will be available at your library, with a generous area dedicated to co-working for students and working professionals.

• CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY SPACE

Children of all ages will enjoy a dynamic new space for interactive play and learning, as well as space for our ever-popular story times.

• TEEN SPACE

Teens can meet, study, and create in a space all their own.

• TECHNOLOGY ACCESS

We’re rated on Yelp as having the best free Wi-Fi for a reason The new library will feature even more state-of-the-art technology for the Bend community.

COMING SOON!

The New Central Library at Stevens Ranch

The new Central Library at Stevens Ranch—located at 61956 SE Santorini Street—will open in May 2026. Drive-thru service at the Central Library is scheduled to begin by April 13, right after the Downtown Bend Library closes, and allows for the return of materials and pick-up of holds. To be notified when drive-thru service begins and when the Central Library opens to the public, sign up for “Central Library Updates” at dpl.pub/newsletters.

When both the Downtown Bend Library and the new Central Library at Stevens Ranch are open, the city of Bend will have two libraries to serve their needs: the Central Library at Stevens Ranch and the Downtown Bend Library. This will provide roughly 140,000 square feet of library space in Bend, a significant increase from the existing 38,000-square-foot Downtown Bend Library, which first opened its doors in 1998.
