A NOVEL IDEA AUTHOR THOMAS KOHNSTAMM

Join author Thomas Kohnstamm for a presentation and speaking event at Summit High school. In the present day, PTA president Sami HasegawaStalworth is determined to rename her daughter’s elementary school after her late grandmother—a beloved music teacher and Japanese internment survivor. What begins as a symbolic family gesture spirals into a kaleidoscopic, multi-generational story of struggle—for and against change, and over who gets to define the future. Tickets are free but required and will be available online starting April 1.

Instead of focusing on the breath or ‘clearing the mind,’ we explore mindfulness through gentle and open awareness of the birds around us. PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK

STAFF PROFILE

PABLO FIALLOS

PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST

As a bilingual Public Services Specialist at the library, Pablo is dedicated to helping the community make the most of all available resources. “I assist customers in finding books, signing up for programs and events, using technology, making copies, and getting their library card to access books and computers,” says Pablo. He has worked at the library for one year and describes the experience as a period of significant learning and personal growth. Each day represents an opportunity to develop new skills and connect people with the resources they need. “I am in the right place where I can continue growing as a person and learning new things every day,” says Pablo. He believes libraries are essential spaces of peace, safety, and discovery. His favorite book is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. “Between the real and the magical, the novel shows repeated cycles of love, solitude, power, and decline. It is a metaphor for Latin American history and the inevitable fate of those who do not learn from their past,” says Pablo. In his free time, he enjoys soccer and video games.

PERFIL DEL PERSONAL

PABLO FIALLOS

CUSTOMER PROFILE LEE BARKER

“Libraries are like coleslaw,” Lee says. “You can’t have a good barbecue without it.” To Lee, a world without libraries would feel just as incomplete. A published author, musician, and woodworker, Lee is perhaps best known locally as an active member of Central Oregon’s writing community. He traces his writing journey back to a program he attended more than a decade ago at the Redmond Library. “About 10 years ago I went to a library program and connected with several people afterward,” he recalls. That evening led to a writing group that continues to meet monthly. The group offers accountability to keep each other writing and serves as an extra set of eyes to provide trusted feedback. He’s also a regular at the library’s Third Thursday Spoken Word Nights, where poets, authors, storytellers, and songwriters gather to share their works on a supportive stage. “Writing is subjective,” Lee says. “It’s not like sports where there’s an expected caliber of talent required. All are welcome and we always applaud.”

THE NEW CENTRAL LIBRARY

OPENING MAY 11

The big reveal is just about here! We are excited to open the doors to your newest Deschutes Public Library location on Monday, May 11, at 9:00 a.m. Books are being added to the shelves, furniture is being set in place, and staff is busy learning about all aspects of the dynamic new Central Library located at 61956 SE Santorini Street, just off 27th Street in east Bend.

WHAT'S INSIDE

On the first level, pick up and return library materials, browse the hottest new titles, check out the Library of Things kits, and marvel at the beautiful art hanging above the lobby. Spacious community meeting rooms beckon for large gatherings, special events, and library programs. You can cozy up to a good book and favorite beverage at the Thump Café.

On the second level, children and teens enjoy space for exploration and discovery. Young children find ample room for creative play and interaction, along with a dedicated youth programming room for story times and other events, and cozy nooks for quieter reading. A teen area offers space for connection, solo work, or reading.

The third floor houses the adult fiction and nonfiction collections, along with book club kits. This level also features collaborative coworking areas, reservable meeting rooms, a handson MakerSpace, and a variety of seating and study options.

Throughout the building, you’ll find original artwork in a variety of mediums, beginning with the grand cascading wood sculpture “Juniper” by John Grade suspended above the staircase and two stunning paintings by artist Sara Siestreem above the Thump Café.

Solar panels on the roof and in the parking areas power this all-electric building, which is built to meet LEED Platinum standards. LEED certification also ensures reduced water use, improved indoor air quality, lower carbon emissions, and materials that prioritize sustainability.

Bird-safe glass integrates patterns of dots to break up reflections and make windows visible to birds.

NOW OPEN CENTRAL LIBRARY DRIVE-THRU

Drive-thru service at the Central Library allows for the return of books and DVDs, and the pick-up of holds. Please be sure to note:

RETURNS

You can return books, DVDs, and magazines 24/7 at the drive-thru. Follow the instructions on the return slot when returning your items.

HOLDS

You can pick up holds at the Central Library drive-thru Monday–Saturday, noon–6:00 p.m. (through May 10; drive-thru hours change on May 11). If you would like to pick up a hold at the Central drive-thru, be sure to select “Central DRIVE-THRU” as your pick-up location.

DOWNTOWN BEND LIBRARY REMODEL

This new building centralizes many library functions, allowing for increased collections that can move more quickly between all library locations in Deschutes County. While the building is not in the center of Bend, its location is central to the region, giving people throughout Deschutes County—to the west and east, north and south—more centralized access to the county’s largest library.

After nearly 30 years in operation, the Downtown Bend Library temporarily closes its doors on April 11 as we begin a long-planned remodel. We encourage Downtown Bend Library customers to change their default hold pick-up location from the Downtown Bend Library to the Central Library drive-thru (be sure to select “Central DRIVE-THRU” as the pick-up location) or to the library location of their choice.

This important remodel will provide expanded public space, new amenities, and infrastructure improvements, ensuring a better library experience in the future.

Visit our website at dpl.pub/future-db for the latest updates and FAQs.

BUILDING COMMUNITY ONE BOOK AT A TIME

Now in its third decade, A Novel Idea continues to show how the power of the written word can strengthen connections and build community—one book at a time. This popular community read program is supported by engaging events that expand on the books’ themes, as well as visits from the authors.

This year we turn to two novels that are rooted in place: Thomas Kohnstamm’s Supersonic (adult and teen selection) and Mitali Perkins’ Hope in the Valley (youth selection). Both books have at their center the idea that place matters, and the struggle to preserve those places is worth it, with characters in both books putting it all on the line to protect what they love.

You’ll find A Novel Idea-related events throughout this Events Guide and in the A Novel Idea Reader’s Guide (available in libraries and online at dpl.pub/anovelidea).

Mitali Perkins will discuss her work at the Redmond Library on April 16, and Thomas Kohnstamm will present at Summit High School on May 2.
