PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK
STAFF PROFILE
Alexandria Renault
VOLUNTEER SERVICES SPECIALIST
Alexandria helps coordinate all 172 library volunteers across the district. Not only does she connect with new people in participation of community building, she ensures meaningful volunteer opportunities are filled to support the library. “Our volunteers are incredibly passionate, knowledgeable, and talented and bring great joy to our spaces,” says Alexandria. On her shelf are several baking, fermenting, and gardening books (Fiery Ferments by Kirsten Shockey and Mooncakes and Milk Bread by Kristina Cho), but she also loves a good fiction read. If you’re looking for more book recommendations or need help sourcing or dispensing general and local knowledge, Alexandria suggests the Book-a-Librarian service. “The lovely librarians are helpful in a friendly and respectful manner,” she says. Whether you’re a veteran volunteer or just passing through the library, Alexandria adds, “Libraries build the community capacity by allowing flow of information and creating connection. They provide a freedom to be present in a space and create community.”

VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Dave King
Dave King discovered woodworking 50 years ago, building furniture to keep his hands and mind busy. Over time, he found joy in smaller, more intricate projects like intarsia patterns, puzzles, and wooden toys for his great-grandkids. After a rewarding career in education and volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, Dave thought, “I should try volunteering at the library.” Fast-forward 15 years and he’s a regular at the Downtown Bend Library, alphabetizing books and pulling unclaimed holds. “Dave is a detail person,” says library staff member Jamie. “We wouldn’t accomplish all that we do without our wonderful volunteers.” When Dave’s not volunteering, he can be found checking out autobiographies or browsing the diy section at the library. “The library is great place to discover a new hobby or jump-start a woodworking craft,” says Dave. “WOOD Magazine is available digitally [via Libby] to discover patterns if you’re just getting started.” He’s a real-life Kris Kringle making toys and sharing his joy of volunteering with the library.
After spending 40 years in the Mojave Desert, Jay and his partner Melanie wanted a change. Craving trees, seasons, and a sense of community, they decided La Pine had everything they needed. “Libraries have been a savior throughout my life, and it’s time to pass that appreciation along,” says Jay. The couple quickly got involved, volunteering weekly at the library and attending the Tuesday Trekkers walking group. “It’s a friendly hour or so that breaks up the day, and it’s very helpful to clear your mind,” says Jay. Putting one foot in front of the other has kept Jay moving forward in life. A retired teacher who lost his voice, Jay found new purpose helping others with technology, books, and encouragement at the library. “I told a young mother how wonderful it was to see her reading to her child. She cried, saying, ‘That’s the nicest thing I’ve heard all day. Thank you.’” Sometimes, it takes just a kind word to make a difference, and Jay is living proof.
Deschutes County has grown. Deschutes Public Library is growing with it.
The word is out—Deschutes County is a desirable place to live. While growth can present challenges, it also provides remarkable opportunities for innovation in how we serve the community. In 2020, Deschutes County voters supported a bond measure to build, expand, and improve libraries across the county, and we’ve renovated libraries in La Pine, Sunriver, and Sisters, and built a new library in Redmond.
We are now in the final phase of the bond projects, with a focus on libraries in Bend.

About the Central Library at Stevens Ranch
The new library is designed to serve Central Oregon now and into the future, allowing for increased collections that can move more quickly between all libraries in the Deschutes Public Library System—from the northern reaches of the county to the south. The energy-efficient building, which is being built to LEED Gold standards, incorporates community meeting and study rooms, coworking spaces, a children’s discovery area, creative zones, a drivethru, and more. The first floor also features a café—because libraries and community go together like books and coffee.

What else did the bond dollars fund?
Bond dollars were also used to fund the construction of a new, 40,000-square-foot-library in the heart of Redmond, which opened in January 2025. Libraries in La Pine, Sisters, and Sunriver were all extensively remodeled and are now open to the public.
