Victorian Café offers a craveable delight

We all have them—those dishes we dream about, anytime someone mentions sweet, sweet words like “brunch.” Without thinking too hard, what dishes come to mind?

A reader recently shared with us that she has a relative who continues to rave about the Caramel Apple French Toast at the Victorian Café—even though that relative only ate there once and doesn’t even live in Central Oregon. That’s one dream dish right there. Based on that story, we decided to explore some of the other breakfast dishes that locals—and visitors—daydream about.

For this year’s Breakfast and Lunch Guide, in addition to listings of the many delightful breakfast and lunch locations across Central Oregon, we’re bringing you a host of Dream Dish reviews. We hope they inspire you to try something new this season.

By Hannah Williford The Caramel Apple French Toast at the Victorian Cafe is a new level of sugary decadence.. »» A dish to dream about: The dish starts and finishes with an extra touch—made from Texas toast covered in graham cracker crumbs before being cooked, allowing for a delicious crust to form. Each bite is accompanied by a generous drizzle of homemade caramel— and if that doesn’t have your sweet tooth aching, dollops of whipped cream sit on each piece. For a taste of freshness, slightly softened Granny Smith apple slices top it all off. »» Complementary beverage: If you’re feeling in an all out fall kind of mood, try the Victorian’s fresh cinnamon iced tea.

The Victorian is also famous for its variety of mimosas and its Chai Hot Toddy.

It looks like a dumpling, made with egg and flour dough. It’s traditionally filled with potatoes and cheese, poached in water, set to dry, then fried in a cast-iron skillet with butter and topped with sautéed onions and sour cream. By Nicole Vulcan Like peanut butter and jelly, lazy Sunday mornings just seem to perfectly pair with eggs benedict.

»» A dish to dream about: Since this is a restaurant inspired by Mediterranean and Portuguese foods, it should come as no surprise that the staff recommended the version served with linguica—a Portuguese-style sausage similar to chorizo, but milder—served with chipotle hollandaise.

The two poached eggs were perfectly cooked, the yolks spilling gently, like yellow-orange effusions, over the delightfully crusty European style bread and Roma tomatoes. The linguica was tangy and a bright complement to the creamy, slightly spiced hollandaise. The spiced Sintra potatoes offered plenty more culinary sponge for the sauce and yolk. »» Price: $14.50 »» A complementary beverage: I opted for a macchiato made with Bellatazza coffee, since it was a work day—but on a lazy Sunday, I’d be opting for a Crater Lake Pepper-Infused Vodka Bloody Mary.
