Take a breath folks, 2017 was a doozy.

So, it may of been hard to keep track of ALL the happenings. If you’ve turned on, tuned in and then dropped out, escaped across YEAR IN the imaginary wall or had too many microREVIEW brews—or cannabis for that matter— and haven’t kept track of what’s been happening, have no fear, we’ve compiled the very best of 2017.

s 2017 comes to a close, we want to take time to reflect on the momentous year that has passed. The biggest issue for the community happened on the national stage, where we’ve experienced the ups and, mostly downs, of inaugurating a new president who is more tuned to midnight tweets than policy that benefits the majority of Americans. The year 2017 has brought new battles on public lands, a highly contentious tax plan and debates on health care—not to mention the more philosophical debates on race and racism, and inappropriate treatment of women.

Yet while the national dysfunction gives us a great deal to consider, local happenings and politics continue as well. While not as tumultuous as the clownery happening nationally, our own little corner of the world has definitely had its ups and downs.

One of the most recent issues— the debate over changing the Bend city charter—gives us pause to ponder how our local political process works a bit better than the national one. Last week, the Bend City Council decided 4-3 against establishing a ward system in Bend. Wards, as we have posited before, would have allowed people in distinct geographical areas of the city to elect a councilor who would represent their quadrant of the city.

We contended that this was an issue of equity, and would have allowed the historically less-influential—and less-represented—east side to have more of a voice in city decisions.

Like all issues put before the

council, ultimately, the end result was borne out of a vote by councilors. Before that, however, a Charter Review Committee, populated by local citizens, debated for months on the possibility of various changes to the charter. They recommended a directly-elected mayor—something the council did vote in favor of. The committee also recommended removing language surrounding councilor pay from the charter, thereby allowing that topic to be decided upon by the City Council. The committee also recommended that ward system.

The deviation between the committee’s recommendation and the ultimate council decision is disappointing. Yes, it’s up to each councilor to vote their conscience, and to vote in favor of what they believe is best for the city. At least we hope that’s what they did. That the council was relatively evenly split on this issue demonstrates, at least, that the voice of the committee was considered.

We wish the decision would have gone the other way, but even though it wasn’t, we take comfort in knowing that, in our local area, a decision this big was not taken lightly, and it involved heavy citizen input. The decision came after months of work by citizens who donated their time to create a more equitable vision for what the leadership of this city should look like in the future, and that’s the way it should be.

Would that decisions made nationally came with so much direct citizen input. SW

...ON BLAMING IT ON THE CALIFORNIANS. Came here 35 years ago from Orange County. I loved it because there was nothing here. Just natural beauty, like California USED to be when I was a little girl. As recently as last summer, a comment was made that I wasn’t a local, I was from California. I passed your test with flying colors and frankly I’m tired of hearing it.

You can call it growth, but Bend is now just another “Tourist Town” with LOTS of pot stores and beer bars. Sad. Whatever the case may be, can we please stop blaming everything on the Californians? Bend and its “locals” need to take responsibility for what is happening.

Bend prides itself on being so accepting, gay, trans, religion of choice, etc. Unless you are from California. Sad. Does anyone remember the gladiola farm that used to be located where the Factory Outlet is now? I used to buy flowers there for my elderly mother.

...ON THE DREADED “BEER FATIGUE.” Beer fatigue? Get serious!

I started drinking craft beers in 1985 and am still discovering new tasty brews.

— Dennis Sargent As I read this “piece” on beer fatigue, I feel the sting of tears in my eyes, first in sadness then disappointment. How could anyone get tired of beer anywhere especially in Central Oregon? It’s a bitter pill (or beer?) to swallow.

Then I realized that the writer was a previous wine drinker and that she thinks it’s “cool” that craft beer is woven through our community. Wine is fine and beer is cool, but this person is really missing the point. Beerlove is not about the Cycle Pub, getting your haircut, mountain biking or running a 5K. It’s loving your first taste of Miller Lite when you are six. It’s drinking Old Milwaukee in college for $3.44 a 12 pack and buying Michelob for special occasions. It’s remembering when imports like Beck, Heineken, and Lowenbrau were more flavor and more cool. It’s traveling to Scotland and drinking those warm dark brews that kept you warm on dark and rainy days. It’s that “first time” tasting the hops in a pale ale. It’s leaving the beauty of Utah for the beer in Oregon. It’s been a progressive journey, a trip; it’s been an epic tale.

All beer drinkers have a similar story to tell. Life is hard and our news is rarely good.

There are plenty of us to carry on and sustain the microbrew and beer industry. But I have a request. PLEASE don’t EVER write about beer fatigue again.

“DEAR MIDDLE-AGED MAN DRIVING THE BROWN PORSCHE” As I carefully pulled out onto Galveston Avenue this lovely Sunday afternoon, imagine my surprise when I glanced in my rearview mirror to see your angry face holding up the F.U. finger at me.

There’s a few things I’ve learned living in Bend for almost 20 years direct from downtown Chicago — and one of them is to be very careful of how we react to one another on the road. This is a small town and I just might be the owner of your favorite restaurant or on the board of your children’s school (or perhaps grandchildren in your case), or we might belong to the same club, etc.

You catch my drift? How embarrassing to be caught flicking off one’s own neighbor or dry cleaner?! Believe me, I’ve been there. But I learned fast. Bendites, do not flick people off or honk. Like ever. You might as well wear a sign that says TOURIST or a bumper sticker that says “I just moved here with my big city attitude and I am still adjusting.

Forgive me.”

We all have those days on the road — and I am guilty of it too — but the biggest difference I have found driving in a small town is that people actually give the other drivers the benefit of the doubt. Meaning, I did look very carefully and I am glad we did not have an accident, but next time you may want to consider that the person did not actually see you, instead of believing the worst: that I pulled out in front of you just to piss you off?

Ummm...how likely is that, really?

As our town’s infrastructure is stretched to the limit, it’s a great opportunity to remember that we are all just doing our best out there. Thanks “Porsche Man” for inspiring me to speak up!

got drunk last weekend and read all 2,735 tweets Donald Trump has written since the election, in the hopes that the feed, collected and searchable on trumptwitterarchive.com, might be a good way to get a sense of the horrors we’ve endured.

It was like reliving all of the unbelievable moments of this last year in fast motion.

But it’s important not to forget that we used to not have to deal with the dread of waking up each morning to realize that Donald Trump is president and scramble madly for Twitter to make sure we’re not at war.

BUEHLER… BUEHLER… BUEHLER State Rep. Knute Buehler is trying to become the first Republican to take the Oregon Governor’s office in 30 years, in what already looks to become the most expensive gubernatorial election in the state’s history.

Longtime Oregon pollsters say simply putting an “R” next to your name in a statewide election can get you 40 percent of the vote. It’s the other 10 percent that’s the tricky part.

The Oregon Democratic Party started a campaign against him before he even started running, with bills designed to force Buehler into making tough votes, and allegations of ethics violation allegations, mostly dismissed.

If Buehler can survive what’s sure to be a far-right challenge in the Republican primary, he has as good a shot as any Republican of the last two decades to rebalance the power in Salem.

APOC-ECLIPSE…NOT! After planning for a wide range of disaster scenarios for months, state and local officials painted a picture worthy of a Jerry Bruckheimer movie to prepare Central Oregon for what was expected to be hundreds of thousands of people descending on the area—especially in Madras, the location which NASA scientists had proclaimed as “the best place in the country to watch the solar eclipse” in August.

It turns out all of those warnings may have scared some of the visitors away, as local businesses lost thousands of dollars, overstocking their stores in anticipation of Apoc-Eclipse 2017.

Law enforcement and government officials were in a no-win situation.

If they had downplayed the potential impact and then became overwhelmed by a major emergency, they would have gotten the blame for that, too.

For anyone who got to experience the solar eclipse in Madras, it was truly an

awe-inspiring moment. For many others, the frustration surrounding the overblown predictions overshadowed the event itself.

SMOKY SUMMER One very real concern for visitors in the days leading up to the solar eclipse was the air quality, and the possibility that smoky skies would obscure the show that some were traveling from all over the world to see.

Other than residents in the Sisters and Black Butte Ranch area and some visitors in the Elk Lake area, most Central Oregonians were spared any direct impact from the flames of the many wildfires across the state—but no one could escape the smoke that drifted from those fires as well as fires in California, Washington and Montana. It settled over our region for the better part of three months, forcing the postponement and relocation of outdoor athletic events and eventually causing the cancellation of the Sisters Folk Festival.

Thanks to the progressive fire management policies and rapid response times of Central Oregon’s local and federal fire agencies, most properties were kept out of harm’s way, but it’s hard not to see the Summer of Smoke as a harbinger of fire seasons to come.

WINTER FROM HELL, IF HELL FROZE OVER When your community’s average annual snowfall is around 22 inches, and you end up getting more than 50 inches in one season, it’s fair to engage in some hyperbole about the winter of 2016-17.

Still, longtime residents will tell you that’s exactly how they remember the winters of their childhood, with snow piled up in the middle of some streets and on top of cars.

Whether it was an anomaly or a return to form, the Snowmageddon was definitely a wake-up call for city

and county officials about the need for plans, manpower and equipment to keep pace with the snow.

DEATH IN DOWNTOWN BEND We’re not Chicago.

We’re not Baltimore.

We’re not even Portland.

So when Michael Tyler Jacques was shot and killed by a police officer in downtown Bend in the waning days of 2016, the case continued to make headlines throughout the first half of 2017.

The 31-year-old Jacques was pulled over at the corner of Bond and Franklin Dec. 23, 2016, after witnesses called 911 to report his erratic driving. Within moments of the traffic stop, Bend Police officer Scott Schaier had tasered Jacques then fired his weapon three times, striking and killing Jacques.

An investigation by the Oregon Department of Justice cleared Officer Schaier of any wrongdoing, but there is still a civil case pending from Jacques’ family, and a sense that more bigcity problems are encroaching on our growing town.

COCC SAFETY OFFICERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT While not necessarily a top story on its own merits, the Deschutes County District Attorney’s warnings in 2017 about the actions of campus safety officers at Central Oregon Community College served as an editorial bridge between the top story of 2016 (the murder of Kaylee Sawyer) and what is sure to be the top story of 2018 (the murder trial of Edwin Lara).

Both DA John Hummel and Bend Police Chief Jim Porter believe COCC campus safety officers have been overstepping their legal boundaries since at least 2015. After Lara was arrested and charged with the murder of Sawyer, allegedly killing her while on duty as a safety officer, Sawyer’s family seemed to

agree with Hummel and Porter’s assessment when they filed a federal lawsuit against COCC in July. The issue is sure to play a role in the possible conviction or acquittal of Lara when his murder trial begins in October.

OSU-CASCADES BLINDSIDED When officials for OSU-Cascades requested a $69 million bond from the state to help them take the next step in the expansion of the Bend campus, they didn’t necessarily expect to come out of the legislative session with all of that funding—but they certainly didn’t expect the answer they received. The campus got just $9 million, basically covering the planning portion of the next academic building but little else.

Lawmakers who opposed the request cited various reasons, including only wanting to fund “shovel-ready projects” because of budget constraints, but the real theme of the chorus of “nos” seemed to be a backtracking from the original mission granted to OSU-Cascades–to be its own separate campus with its own separate funding.

In the last weeks of 2017, Gov. Kate Brown (who used the “shovel-ready” reason when the state denied the original request) made a renewed request for $39 million for OSU-Cascades. Given that her upcoming opponent in the governor’s race is from Bend, some believe the request could be more of a political maneuver.

LET THERE BE SCHOOLS Thanks to the passage of a record-setting $268 million construction bond, Bend-La Pine Schools will build a new elementary school, a new high school and make more than 150 other improvements in facilities throughout the school district.

Now, it’s up to Bend-La Pine School officials to reward the voters’ faith with efficient and timely spending. SW

10 Albums of 2017 SOUND Top A year of inspired releases reveals plenty of depth

1 The Rural Alberta Advantage: “The Wild”

This Canadian band hits a new high water mark on its fourth album, “The Wild.” On stellar songs like “Bad Luck Again” and “Beacon Hill,” the group balances grittiness, a little twang and a healthy dose of pop melody, creating songs that immediately demand attention. “Brother” and “White Lights” show a more acoustic, folkier, but no less fervent side to the band. The Rural Alberta Advantage may not be hip enough to make many top 10 lists, but I’ll take this album over Kendrick Lamar or Lorde any day.

2 J.D. McPherson

“Undivided Heart & Soul” – A couple of years ago, I ranked McPherson’s second album, “Let The Good Times Roll,” at the top of my year-end list. This follow-up effort is just as good. It’s a more original, harder rocking effort, with cool-grooving “Desperate Love” and the fuzzed out “Lucky Penny” leading the way. With any luck, “Undivided Heart & Soul” should end McPherson’s days as one of rock’s best kept secrets.

3 U2: “Songs of Experience”

Some may consider “Songs of Experience” a sell-out album meant to recapture the mass audience U2 failed to reach with their adventurous previous three albums. Fair enough. But the new songs are well crafted and have enough lyrical substance that there’s no faulting their accessibility. Besides, isn’t the ability U2 shows to blend depth, relatability and beauty on “Songs of Experience” among the same qualities that made “The Joshua Tree” a classic album 30 years ago?

4 Khalid: “American Teen”

Brian Wilson once called his ill-fated “Smile” album a teenage symphony to God. “American Teen” might be an R&B symphony to today’s teens about living in today’s world. Here, Khalid confronts the rush of love, the crush of heartbreak, issues with parents and more. The kicker is Khalid knows how to write memorable vocal melodies and instrumental hooks. That’s reason enough to anticipate how good Khalid, 19, might become as he grows into adulthood.

Chris Stapleton: “From a Room Vol. 1”; “From a Room Vol. 2”

Apparently, many of the songs on this pair of albums date back a decade to Stapleton’s songwriting days. And it’s hard to see why gems like “Second One to Know” (a soul-tinged bit of Southern rock), “Broken Halos” (one of several earthy country gems on this album) and “Scarecrow in the Garden” (an easy-going country rocker) got passed over by other artists. But Stapleton, arguably today’s best country artist, makes these old songs sound new again.

Queens of the Stone Age: “Villains”

On the seventh album from this band, Josh Homme and crew continue to make some of the most distinctive and fresh hard rock music going, finding new variations in the band’s established sound. For instance, with its bouncy beat and a barrage of hooks, “The Way You Used To Do” is as catchy a heavy rock song as you’ll hear. There’s much more where that came from, making “Villains” almost criminally good.

7 St. Vincent: “Masseduction”

Plenty of artists attempt to incorporate the EDM/synthetic sounds common in top 40 pop today into their music, often with awkward results. Annie Clark (St. Vincent) gets things right here, employing electronic touches and beats that serve the songs and make “Masseduction,” an album that combines sharp songwriting with imaginative production.

Squeeze: “The Knowledge”

Back in action after an extended breakup, songwriters Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford show they can still muster pop brilliance, with several songs (“Patchouli,” “AE” and “Two Forks”) that will spur memories of such Squeeze gems as “Tempted,” “Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)” and “Some Fantastic Place.”

SZA: “Ctrl”

One of the most auspicious R&B albums of the year belonged to SZA. Songs like “The Weekend,” “Prom” and “Drew Barrymore” boast uncommonly striking silky melodies, while the hip-hop-ish rhythms of “Doves in the Wind,” “Go Gina” and “Love Galore” give “Ctrl” a good deal of edge and groove. Her first full-length effort, “Ctrl,” is up for five Grammys, and the guess is this won’t be the only time she earns accolades.

Lorde: “Melodrama”

Lorde’s second album captures the chaotic, emotional swings of life being lived in the wake of a difficult breakup, all set to a synth-laden sound that’s both grand and intimate. One wishes the lyrics offered more insights into truths discovered or lessons learned from the breakup, but the visceral tales are entertaining and the music is engaging, with enough idiosyncrasies and edginess to keep it compelling. Many years produce an album or two that scream “year’s best album” from the first listen. This was not that kind of year. In fact, there wasn’t a lot to separate any of the albums I ranked in the top five. There was, however, a good deal of depth to the albums of 2017, and limiting the honorable mention list to 10 albums was difficult. Here’s how I see the best albums from the past year.

o matter how the year panned out for you from a personal angle, one thing becomes clear when reminiscing about 2017 — it was a damn good year for live music in Bend. After a couple year’s hiatus, I returned to writing about music for The Source, giving me an awesome vantage point when observing and partaking in the live music scene. You guys. I talked to James Mercer, lead singer of The Shins, about one of my favorite movies of all time, “Garden State!” Talk about a dream come true.

Enjoy a few of my favorite quotes from throughout the year. Musicians in this town banded together to raise funds for victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, for local children in music programs and they all sharpened their skills to increase the level of talent in the Bend music scene. If you thought 2017 brought a wealth of talented musicians to Central Oregon, you haven’t seen anything yet!

Anna Rose - April 2017 - Volcanic Theatre Pub

“The thing I love the most about being a performing songwriter is the connection you can make from yourself to a song and from that song to a person you’ve never met, never spoken to,” Anna Rose said. “I think that’s a powerful, impactful piece of our culture. Really human nature entirely. Connection is what makes us human, I believe. Music is one of the only things in this world that is truly universal, it has its own language that everyone inherently understands.”

The Slants - May 2017 - TEDxBend “Arts serve as an easy barrier or entry in terms of experiencing other cultures or identities and perspectives,” Simon Young of The Slants said of using the arts to combat racism. “I think our music allows us to communicate those things through stories or lyrics. When people come to a concert, they’re ready to be entertained, maybe ready to dance or to have a good time.

It’s kind of a great way to approach people on a deep level where they aren’t necessarily defensive.”

G. Love & Special Sauce - June 2017 - Century Center “For me, the big payoffs are just to be on stage and get to perform and play my songs and do what I love,” G. Love said. “That’s the payoff. That’s the love. The work is the traveling and being away from home, but the music and the journey, like the journey of writing and making a record and physically journeying around the world, it’s all something I really love. And honestly, the more I do it, the more I love it.”

It’s like this peak mystical experience where everyone’s involved in this thing as it’s happening, and the energy play back and forth of everyone in the room — it’s a spiritual thing.”

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe - August 2017 - Volcanic Theatre Pub “You know what, I wanted to get to see the eclipse, but I won’t get to see it,” Karl Denson said ahead of his pre-eclipse bash in Bend. “I’ve been to Bend, but I want to see this group of people out in the desert who are out there to see this. That’s the funnest part, the gathering of humanity.”

Michael Franti - September 2017 - Les Schwab Amphitheater “It’s just an incredibly great community of people who are, what I call, soulrockers,” Michael Franti said of Bend residents. “People who live from their heart, who have compassion for all and who have a tenacious enthusiasm for music, and for people, and for the planet. I really see that in the Bend community. People who have gravitated to live there love the outdoors, they love being physically active, they love living life to its fullest and sharing it with other people and at the same time protecting our beautiful wildlife and nature for generations to come.”

This is just how we feel as musicians. Certain topics aren’t off limits because they may not be popular or it might jeopardize our career.”

Larry and His Flask - November 2017 - The Capitol “I wanted to get them water and food somehow,” Jamin Marshall says of the inhabitants of St. Thomas, affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. “A couple of my friends own a boat and make their own pizza on it. It’s really neat. They were buying supplies in Puerto Rico prior to Maria. They were bringing water and food, taking people to Puerto Rico. When the second one (hurricane) hit, their whole operation became overworked.

Now, they’re looking for other people to help.”

Central Oregon Now and Then Distilling and moonshining in the high desert

By Scott Stuemke stills were commonly displayed on Bend’s Greenwood Avenue, next to the jail, and later hacked up. Officials spilled the contraband onto the streets while the thirsty looked on.

In 1926, a gunfight erupted in the junipers, 45 miles southeast of Bend, during the search for an unregistered still. Revenuers removed a window from the “dugout” and found 10 barrels of brewing mash. To catch the culprits, they hid for 18 hours.

Vayle Taylor, a 25-year-old resident of the Ewing Ranch and member of the so-called “Bear Creek Gang” was killed in an “accidental shooting” during the stakeout near the Crook and Deschutes county lines. In the end, authorities found just one quart of alleged moonshine. County officials and state men broke up the stills and set fire to the “dugout” and the adjoining shelter. The officers were later exonerated.

The remaining members of the Bear Creek Gang set out to get the revenuers, setting their sights on dynamiting the Congress Apartments in the Whiskey Flat area, a westside neighborhood where Scandinavian immigrants lived. The intent was to kill the prohibition officer, A.P. “Buck” Marriott and family. The story is that a barking dog thwarted the placement of more explosives, so the gang only managed to fire a blast that involved 20 to 30 pounds of TNT and dynamite.

occupants of the apartments, but as it stood, there were only minor injuries and major property damage.

Prohibition led to corruption and was repealed by the 21st Amendment in 1933, but moonshining revived anyway, due to the mounting prices of liquor. The people who bucked Prohibition where equated to those involved in the Boston Tea Party.

Today, the distillery scene has come out of the shadows, and people can visit several small batch distilleries here in the high desert, producing award-winning spirits including whiskey, vodka, gin, cordials—and yes, even moonshine. SW

The Volstead Act, or the National Prohibition Act, created the 18th Amendment in 1919. The amendment prohibited the production, sale and transport of intoxicating liquors. It didn’t, however, define “intoxicating liquors” or provide penalties, and didn’t specifically prohibit the use of intoxicating liquor. At the time, 1 out of every 7 gallons of liquor in the U.S. was moonshine, and it was believed that a billion dollars was lost in revenue every year.

The isolated Central Oregon plateau led to the creation of the Dry Squad, or Prohibition Enforcers. These Dry Squads were members of the Bureau of Prohibition, and “Revenoor Action” accounted for more law enforcement than any other more actions in the high desert than anywhere else in Oregon. So-called “revenoors” were Prohibition agents, granted wide powers to search for and seize alcohol. The Dry Squads supposedly protected innocent citizens against bandits while searching for contraband on the highways.

Dry Squads scoured the high desert in search of moonshiners running illegal operations that consisted of “dugouts,” usually an excavated shelter covered with logs, tar paper and dirt and a catchment for rain and snow. Shiners used large cellars to house a still and mash barrels. The dugouts usually employed hatches to let out the mash fumes. Some bold individuals even pursued moonshining in their basements. oday, small batch distilling is creating a niche for award-winning spirits—but distilling in the high desert has been happening for more than 100 years.

When asked about his impetuous knack for creating fine libations, one local distiller says it’s about making great spirits. The key is “local grains, water and passion.” Way back when, another necessary ingredient was moxie.

Moonshining was a common practice by local settlers around the turn of the 20th Century. Homesteaders capitalized on the demand and remoteness of the high desert to operate small, crude distilling plants. A simple mash of grain, sugar and water was the foundation for the ‘shine. Distilling was accomplished by evaporating alcohol from the mash.

The can and coil had to be made from copper, as using any other metals would react with the alcohol and poison the liquor chiller.

This practice went unregulated until liquor control measures were enacted through the influence of the Anti-Saloon League and Women’s Christian Temperance Union. These measures were enacted by the Oregon legislature in 1908, with enforcement left up to the counties.

Alcohol went unrestricted until 1914.

Local enforcement, dwindling liquor supplies and mounting prices forced men who made the skull popping-brews into hideouts in the land of caves and juniper berries.

“I consider myself an artist, an engineer and a craftsperson with some business savvy,” Kinney says.

“I have a love for people and I love my customers,” who often share stories about their gear and what it means to them. “I can contribute to people’s happiness, and that in turn makes me happy.”

Kinney has been in the repair business for 27 years, ever since she started working as a tailor in the Utah-based, Snowbird ski resort. Her family moved to Bend in 2004, and she started working out of her garage in 2011.

Located on a quiet street in Northwest Bend, there’s a small sign indicating the home for her company, Rugged Thread Outerwear Repair. There's even an honor system drop-off box for repairs.

This past October things changed when Kinney’s achievements were recognized by the Bend Outdoor Worx Venture Out Festival. Hurdling through three rounds of competition, including an initial 20-minute pitch, and a showdown on the Tower Theatre stage, she won the Ready to Roll Award, (growth stage category).

The prize? A cash grant of $75,000.

fter a busy season of sweet handmade gift making that many of us artists participate in during this time of year, I am often left with the deep desire to make Art (with a capital A) that is not something you can buy. Something you can’t hold in your hand or replicate.

One of the essential problems we artists have always struggled with is when Art is treated like a throw pillow or something you should print on leggings. A thing to be commodified. Most artists come to the place of being resolved to live within this conundrum. Make products, because no one buys actual art. Or at least that is how it feels sometimes.

If you’ve bought a piece of art in the last year that serves no other function than hanging on your wall and illuminating your soul, thank you. But this problem is not one to be combatted just by buying art.

I have a wild spirit and I just needed to be outside, and Minnesota was not a place to be outside.” But she kept on the move and in 1988 ended up at Snowbird, where she started working on ski suits and other snow apparel. That stint turned into about six years and was the foundation of Kinney’s busy career repairing outdoor gear of all types.

Besides herself, there is one part-time employee, but Kinney hopes to increase this to three within the next year or so.

“I could see us having a facility here to employ 40 people,” in the next 6-10 years, she says. She’s an advocate for a living wage, in which people are valued, and enjoy the work they do and the people with whom they work. This positive mindset and work environment then contributes back to the community, she adds.

“I want to hire people who are smarter than me,” Kinney says, by taking advantage of the courses and skills taught at COCC and OSU-Cascades.

Kinney says that her repairs are now booked out to about the middle of January. The work changes with the seasons; now, it’s mostly seam taping and other repairs on snow jackets and pants. In the summer it will be tents, sleeping bags and motorcycle clothing and packs.

And is there a mindset change with larger corporations? Kinney says yes, with Patagonia and Carhartt leading the way, supplying her with bags of zipper parts for free. Dakine, Mountain Khakis, Osprey Backpacks and Timbuk2 are other eco-friendly brands she mentions.

When not in the shop, Kinney enjoys spending time with her kids, as well as road and mountain biking, and most recently, backcountry skiing.

Art-ful Wishes for a New Year

We took art out of school long ago, thinking it’s not a field people make money in, so why would we teach it? The truth is, taking art out of schools did not stop producing artists. It stopped producing audiences, and stopped producing people who could speak a language that exists without words.

This year, if you can offer one resolution to art, make it this. Sit with art. Listen to art.

Find art and love it for a reason you may not yet understand.

Find the time to understand it. Love it without having to own it.

Sign yourself up for an art class—one that gets your hands dirty and doesn’t involve wine,

pre-made canvases, birch trees and sunsets—but one that asks you to look into that part of yourself that has remained silent, aching to be heard. You can find classes at Central Oregon Community College, The Wilds and The Workhouse.

Sign your child up for an art class, just like you would soccer. You don’t sign them up for soccer because you think one day they will play in the World Cup; you sign them up because they learn invaluable lessons that we all need to become compelling, engaged adults. Art does that, too.

Art teaches us how to struggle through a problem and still feel successful at the end. It helps people learn that even if something isn’t perfect, it

can still be loved. It connects us beyond cultures, genders, the ideas of who we are and who we think we are. Art allows us to be spiritual without being burdened by dogma. Art allows us to touch nature and match our own to it.

Recently, a fellow artist suggested that the lack of engagement with art in the local area is because people here are primarily engaged in our natural world, with activities such as hiking and skiing and boating.

That’s when I add a gentle reminder that it was an artist named Ansel Adams who trekked into those deep forests with a camera and glass plates almost 100 years ago, bringing back some of the most immense, unbelievable photographs ever seen of the natural world. It was that work that directly inspired the preservation of natural areas. Because that is also what art does: Inspires us— to be better, to do more, and to find ourselves and love what we arrive at. hen your garage workshop is home to seven different industrial sewing machines, you better crank up those tunes. During our phone call to set up this interview, outdoor gear-repair extraordinaire, Kim Kinney, sounded like she was talking from the floor of a factory going full tilt. So a couple days later, when we settled in to talk, she first had to turn down the volume on the Rolling Stones so that we could hear ourselves.

Statistics show that 11 million tons of outdoor gear end up in landfills every year, according to Kinney, so she’s combatting this by meticulously repairing one outdoor gear item at a time. “What we’re trying to do is reduce all that waste by repairing. Our specialty is the lifelong repair of your outerwear to keep it out of the landfill.”

This can be done, she adds, “because people are attached to their stuff.” And it’s not all clothing. Kinney repairs a lot of soft-sided luggage, tents, tarps, sleeping bags, you name it. For locals—75 percent of her customer base are walkins—but also for big name brands. Her clients include REI, Patagonia and Bendbased companies Giant Loop, that outfits motorcyclists, and Pine Mountain Sports. Kinney also repairs jackets and pants for the Mt. Bachelor ski staff and for the outdoor leadership programs at OSU-Cascades and COCC. And then there’s the mail order; each week she averages 5-10 pieces mailed from various locales such as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, Alaska

Kegs and kegs of craft—it never ends.

emember when living in a city with lots of craft beer was considered unique? Bend may have been at the forefront of the idea, creating one of the world’s first Ale Trail atlases, but now it has tons of company.

As of the end of 2017 there are more than 6,000 breweries operating in the United States. That’s according to figures released by the Brewers Association, which further notes that 83 percent of Americans age 21 or over now live within 10 miles of at least one. From New York and LA to the Eastern Oregon town of Mitchell (population 125), there are few cities and communities that aren’t home to good beer—or, at least, locally-produced beer.

The sheer ubiquity of the stuff is one major trend that made itself known this year, one in which the entire industry continued to grow, if not quite as exponentially as in years past. It’s no longer a surprise to see something from Deschutes, Crux or Boneyard at a Red Robin or the Redmond Airport bar—it’s expected.

But what can beer locally and nationwide do to retain consumer interest and grow the concept of craft yet further?

Here are a few trends to watch out for in 2018: Brewers figure out what New England IPAs are.

NEIPAs—those hazy, juicy, fruity things, caught on from coast to coast in 2017, but the results varied widely in taste, look and often quality. “I would

like to see a better refining of the process,” says John Holl of Craft Beer & Brewing. “I don’t mind hazy beer and I don’t mind beer that has to be consumed sooner than others. But a lot of brewers have been going for the aesthetics, the way it looks, rather than focusing on flavors, focusing on nuance. People won’t forgive poor quality much longer.”

Sours mature.

As this genre also matures and gains headway, beer fans who turn their noses up at the sour Berliner Weisses and other fruit-flavored beers popping up lately could be missing out. “Acid is a big part of the flavor profiles of all wines and many popular cocktails,” says Garrett Oliver, head brewer at Brooklyn Brewery. “Why should beer be any different? But balance and elegance will win out over coarse, mouth-puckering examples.”

Locally, more taprooms open.

Boneyard’s vaunted brewpub restaurant off Third Street, originally pegged for a summer launch, is still on its way.

It’ll be vying with Worthy Taps & Tacos, slated to open off Brooks Street downtown in the spring.

Saturation might not be the concern so much as dwindling brand loyalty—with so many options available in so many places, many drinkers try one beer, then immediately move on to someone else’s. As craft gets more and more local, after all, the competition gets that much fiercer. SW

DOWNSIZING: Director Alexander Payne is responsible for the brilliant satires “Election” and “Citizen Ruth,” but advanced word says this is another ill-timed white savior narrative disguised as a woke dramedy. Helms play brothers crossing the country searching for their birth father. The supporting cast features Ving Rhames, J.K. Simmons, Glenn Close, Christopher Walken and Katt Williams, so even though the trailer is bad, there might be some genuine laughs. Old Mill Stadium 16 & IMAX

FERDINAND: An animated adventure about a giant bull trying to escape from his cruel captors. With the voice talents of John Cena, Kate McKinnon, David Tennant and Anthony Anderson, “Ferdinand” should be a funny and fast-paced flick for the kids. The humor in the trailer is fairly juvenile, so don't expect Pixar-level animation.

Old Mill Stadium 16 & IMAX, Redmond Cinema THE FLORIDA PROJECT: Director Sean Baker was responsible for 2015's brilliant “Tangerine” and 2012's profanely moving “Starlet,” so expect “The Florida Project” to be another wonderful little film. Starring Willem Dafoe and a star-making performance by Brooklynn Prince, “The Florida Project” will definitely be a contender during awards season. Sisters Movie House THE GREATEST SHOWMAN: Hugh Jackman started his career as a song and dance man, so it's fitting that this Christmas he returns in a giant Hollywood musical about the life of P.T. Barnum. Who wants to guess whether the film soft pedals the animal abuse and mistreatment of the side show attractions? Old Mill Stadium 16 & IMAX, Sisters Movie House JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE: Loosely connected to the original “Jumanji”

starring Robin Williams, this reboot updates the story of kids sucked into a board game into something for the digital age. THE LAST JEDI: The darkest and most emotionally brutal “Star Wars” film since “The Empire Strikes Back” sees the characters we know and love put through the wringer in one scene after another. This might not be a crowd pleaser in the same way “The Force Awakens” was, but it's a mature and nuanced entry into the beloved franchise. This will only become more beloved as it ages. just that, but also a pitch-perfect parody of crime documentaries like “Making a Murderer” and “The Staircase.” The show is much funnier than it has any right to be.

Young Pope 8 The Just based on the ludicrousness of the title, “The

his is the hardest it has ever been for me to come up with a Top 10 Films list. The year 2017 will be remembered as the finest year for cinema of the new century (alongside 2007, which brought us “There Will Be Blood,” “No Country for Old Men” and “Zodiac,” among others). This year ranged from tent-pole blockbusters all the way to micro-budgeted indies that exceeded expectations and invoked either pure imagination or startling originality.

I watched 110 movies released in 2017, but still missed a few that I have a feeling could have changed my list a bit, including “The Florida Project,” “The Shape of Water” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”

Still, these are my Top 10, and I feel lucky to have experienced each and every one of them.

War for the Planet of the Apes

Blockbuster filmmaking at its finest. Huge sections of the movie have barely any dialogue, but director Matt Reeves and the special effects team created a group of primates that will stay with you for a very long time. Steve Zahn’s “Bad Ape” is the breakout character of the year.

The Big Sick

Somehow, “The Big Sick” manages to follow every single romantic dramedy convention and yet still feel like a breath of fresh air for the genre. The true story of how comedians Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon met and started dating is a testament to the magic of falling in love.

Raw

A gifted teenager named Justine heads to vet school where she tastes raw meat for the first time. The meat begins to change her into something quite different...something much darker. This French horror/satire is a mesmerizing knockout from the first frame.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Frances McDormand gives the performance of the year in this bleakly funny and bloody genre mashup from playwright Martin McDonagh. While about small town politics, it’s also a macrocosmic look at how we grieve and whether revenge is always the best dish.

6 Lady Bird

A coming-of-age story that’s intensely personal, yet manages to make the life of Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson feel universally relevant. Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf give sublime performances and the film never stops being a genuine delight.

5 Personal Shopper

This seductive ghost story is actually a tale of isolation and depression in the iPhone era. Kristen

Stewart gives the performance of her career as an American personal shopper in Paris trying to make contact with her recently departed twin brother. A magnetic work of art.

4 Mother!

Love it or hate it, there’s nothing quite like it.

The subtext is on the surface, the thematic content is so layered that it becomes muddy and then operatic in its hyperbole. The film is just like true creation: messy, painfully self-indulgent and the only way it ever could have been.

3 Get Out

This film offers so many layers, you can get something different from each viewing. Whether as a socio-political satire, a straightforward horror movie or a racial allegory, “Get Out” will just keep getting better with time.

2 Nocturama

In Paris, a group of Millennials orchestrate a terrorist attack across the city. That night, they hide in a massive department store, surrounded by the consumerism they hate so proudly. Hypnotizing, breath taking and brilliant, “Nocturama” is an explosion of pure cinematic artistry.

1 A Ghost Story

A tiny little film from the director of the “Pete’s Dragon” remake, “A Ghost Story” isn’t just the best film of 2017, but one of the best films I’ve ever seen. It follows a white-sheeted ghost hanging around the house he loved, watching his wife try to move on with her life.

It delves into our concept of time, the way the world will move on without us and how the best things about us are what we leave behind. A masterpiece for the ages.

Honorable mention: Wind River, Logan Lucky, The Last Jedi, Okja, Thor: Ragnarok, The Lost City of Z, Dunkirk, Blade Runner, Colossal, Coco and The Blackcoat’s Daughter. SW

Young Pope” should have been a brain dead and lurid soap opera. Instead it’s a hypnotizing, mystical fantasy about a sinner who might just be a saint.

Mouth 7 Big This animated Netflix series gave me the big-

gest laughs of the year and is easily the most quotable new show of 2017. It’s a coming-of-age story from the twisted mind of Nick Kroll, with more animated penises than you could ever possibly imagine.

Things 2 6 Stranger For every complaint about how the first season of

Netflix’s breakout show relied too much on nostalgia, season two decided to go its own way. A darker, more melancholy storyline elevated the show far above what it could have been.

Good Place 5 The It’s hard to talk about this show without reveal-

ing the game-changing twist in the Season One finale. Just watch it from the beginning because this is the smartest and most enlightened show on television.

It’s close to perfect. of None 4 Master Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang have created a show

that can evolve into different genres and tones with an effortlessness that’s breathtaking. Within the same episode I have laughed my head off and cried my eyes out.

3 Legion What if you made a superhero show where the lead

hero might be mentally ill and powerful enough to end the world? “Fargo’s” Noah Hawley takes on that idea and made the trippiest and most bizarre comic book show in history.

Peaks 2 Twin The Return. I’m not sure what I imagined when I

heard David Lynch and Mark Frost were returning to the town of Twin Peaks, but it certainly isn’t what I received. This is what genius looks like when given 18 hours to fill.

Leftovers 1 The Over three seasons this became the best ensemble on

television, telling a story that’s at times a meta-fictional look at mythologizing our heroes and at others a family drama where the father might possibly be Jesus. SW

As you might have learned from Feb. 9’s “Cougar killings back in the news,” and Oct. 26’s “The trouble with people and deer,” feeding deer in town—or anywhere, really—is really not cool. First,

it encourages the deer to stick around populated areas, instead of heading out to the winter range where they’ll be able to scour the landscape for the stuff they normally should be eating. Second, with deer in town, the predators follow.

Do you really want a big cougar in your backyard? Didn't think so.

So, put away those corn nuts or bird seed and.... Don't. Feed. The Deer. Ever.

Keep your cats inside.

Don’t like coyotes hanging around your yard? Hide yo' cats.

As the Dec. 16, 2016, piece, “Why Coyotes Like It In Town” explains, cats are mighty tasty for a coyote. You know how you keep going back to that local, organic, artisan food cart you can’t stop telling your buddies about? It’s like that.

Thus, coyotes will come into human territory to find that fine feline snack. On top of that, cats are also predators who will decimate the songbird populations in your area—if you allow them. If your cat can't be contained, put a bell on Fluf-cakes so the songbirds know she’s stalking.

Buy bird-friendly coffee.

If every cup of coffee had a disclaimer that read, "THIS many birds were harmed in the making of this joe," our bets are there would be significantly fewer caffeine addicts out there.

As explained in the Dec. 6 article, “The Dark Side of Your Morning Cup of Coffee,” not all coffee growing practices are good for bird populations. Some coffee farms are good habitat for native birds, and the migrating birds who come from our part of the world to winter in warmer climes.

In general, shade-grown coffee is better for the environment—and better for birds in turn. Since shade-grown coffee relies on the humus natural to the forest floor, it doesn’t require harsh fertilizers.

Sun-grown coffee, meanwhile, is much harder on the environment. So look for "bird-friendly labels" before you buy your next bag o’ beans.

Don’t eff the bees.

As Anderson reminds us in his Aug. 31 article, “Pity the Poor Bumblebee,” the problems facing bees are one of the most crucial biological and ecological

issues we are facing in the modern age. They’re more than a canary in a coal mine. They also happen to contribute largely to food production.

The takeaway you should learn: Stop spraying pesticides on everything. It’s hurting the bees, which pollinate all of that food you eat.

Government agencies matter.

In spite of what you might be hearing from the national stage, government agencies are not out to get us, and regulations can protect us. As Anderson outlines in May 25’s story, “Why Government Environmental Agencies Matter,” agencies such as the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and other agencies do their work to protect the public. In a time of much rhetoric surrounding government overreach, don’t be fooled. SW Ready to re-read Anderson’s work?

Rural nonprofit Mustangs to the Rescue is working up a sweat helping horses left out in the cold

brown and white patched horse blinks modestly at the three women approaching. The nameless mare recoils when volunteer Linda Conrad approaches. Mare Doe’s reluctance is palpable and it takes significantly longer to harness her than the other 34 residents at Mustangs to the Rescue. Once rope-haltered, Mare Doe is expressive and full of equine character: satellite ears shifting, nibbling zippers, trying to nuzzle into Kate Beardsley, the director of MTTR. Seeing these amazing creatures in action, it isn’t hard to understand how a somewhat superhero nonprofit formed to rescue horses in need. MTTR has offered assistance to horses in need as a public entity for the past five years and privately for the last 15. During its tenure, MTTR has arranged approximately 100 adoptions and facilitated help for hundreds more horses—all from its headquarters at Western Sky Ranch in southeast Bend.

Help runs the gamut, from slaughter intervention to assistance when a horse is being under-cared for. Beardsley casually references a time this year

when hundreds of untrained horses were rounded up in northeastern Oregon, headed for slaughter. By peaceably working with the kill buyer (the person selling horses for slaughter) and accessing the power of social media, Beardsley was able to negotiate the release of the yearlings in the bunch and dispatched individual rescue parties to drive to Walla Walla for the pickups.

On working with a kill buyer, Beardsley plainly stated, “I respect that those individuals are doing their job, but it isn’t a job I would choose and I wish it were obsolete.”

In more typical rescue scenarios, a neighbor or friend intervenes and encourages a horse owner to call MTTR because they are having difficulty, often financial, caring for a horse. “Behind every horse in need is at least one person in need,” explains Beardsley. “No matter the reason, if a sheriff has seized a horse or a neighbor has talked a person into giving up a horse, I see relief consistently.

have been rescued, and even more so in winter. Beardsley has a dozen regular volunteer crew members who are hard-working, and coincidentally, 80 percent female.

When asked why equine care tends to be a female-dominated field, Beardsley reflected, “Women typically fill a nurturing role in our culture. ...We don’t ignore animal cruelty anymore. Rescues are growing at a significant rate and animal rescue is a natural outgrowth of the challenges our society is facing.

Beardsley adds, “Crew members tend to all aspects of the horse rescue from administrative duties to shoveling manure.” MTTR is always on the lookout for volunteers and apart from that it has a few other items on its wish list: A dump trailer, tractor and truck are the

big-ticket requests.

On avoiding rescues, Beardsley adds, "Training is a horse’s best insurance. It’s very difficult to create adoptions, to keep horses out of the slaughter pipeline or even medically treat horses with no training. Training is for an animal’s safety."

If you know of a horse in need, the first step is to contact the sheriff, Beardsley says. Documentation is important and there’s no consequence for the owner if the situation checks out. With proposed cuts in Housing and Urban Development funding and tax law changes for the new year, there can be both positive and negative consequences to this affordable housing crisis. The general consensus is that more will be required at the local level, as opposed to federal levels which will pose additional burdens close to home. I can only hope 2018 will be a better year for affordable housing and that things keep improving rather than getting worse.

s 2017 comes to an end, the U.S. real estate market has continued to be strong overall—all while housing affordability remains a big issue both nationally and locally. As a millennial and realtor, I regularly encounter people in my age group who are unable to buy a home because they cannot save money and have been spending half their incomes on housing for many years. Lower interest rates and access to capital have helped with the growth of some affordable housing, but the need for relief continues to grow as rents and home prices increase and interest rates increase, but wages remain relatively stagnant.

According to sources, including Enterprise and the Joint Center for Housing Studies, more than one in four families who rent their homes are cost-burdened. Translating to about 11.4 million renter households nationwide, the group has increased by 30 percent in the last decade. This is expected to increase into the next decade, even were rent and income growth to match.

Many renter households are young families or senior citizens with limited resources, for whom rising rents are a serious challenge, many being single-person households with only one income.

Reality has this bad habit of being kind of a bummer. So, sure, that person you married all those years ago still has the capacity to surprise you with crazy new positions in bed — but typically they’re yogi-like contortions they use to pick dead skin off the bottoms of their feet.

That line you quote, “relationships ‘take work,’ while you never hear … what a coal mine an affair can be,” is actually from one of my old columns. I tweeted it along with this advice: “Don’t just assume you and romantic partner (will) stay monogamous. Maybe discuss how, exactly, you’ll go about that.”

From where I sit — opening lots of letters and email from cheaters and the cheated upon — this is simply good, practical marriage- (and relationship-) preserving advice. But from some of the responses on Twitter, you’d think I’d suggested braising the family dog and serving him on a bed of greens with a “tennis ball” of candied yams.

Though some men and women on Twitter merely questioned my take, interestingly, the enraged responses (ranging from impersonally rabid to denigratingly hateful) came entirely from men. Granted, this may just have been due to chance (who was shirking work on Twitter just then), or it may reflect research on sex differences that suggests men tend to be more comfortable engaging

in direct conflict.

However, though evolutionary psychologist David Buss, among others, finds that both men and women are deeply upset by infidelity — or the mere prospect of it — there seems to be a sex difference in who is more likely to go absolutely berserko over it.

Buss, looking out over the anthropological literature, observes: “In cultures the world over, men find the thought of their partner having sexual intercourse with other men intolerable. Suspicion or detection of infidelity causes many men to lash out in furious anger rarely seen in other contexts.”

Evolutionary psychologists have speculated that the fierceness of male sexual jealousy may be an evolved adaptation to combat the uniquely male problem of “paternity uncertainty” — basically the “who actually is your daddy?” question. A woman, of course, knows that the tiny human who’s spent a good part of nine months sucker-punching her in the gut is hers. However, our male ancestors lacked access to 23andMe mail-in DNA tests. So male emotions seem to have evolved to act as an alarm system, goading men to protect themselves (like with a scary expression of anger to forewarn their partner), lest they be snookered into raising another man’s child.

The problem with the enraged response is that it kicks our brain into energy conservation mode — shunting blood flow away from our higher-reasoning department and toward our arms and legs and organs needed for “fight or flight.” So the mere mention of cheating — even coupled with suggestions for how to prevent it — kills any possibility of reasoned thinking. In our dumbed-down enraged state, all we’ve got is the knee-jerk response: “I am so totally moral, and so is my wife, and anyone who needs to discuss how they’ll stay monogamous is the Whore of Babylon!” continued on bendsource.com

s 2017 draws to a close, we look back with fondness upon a year filled with joy, laughter and good times, with sharing, love and—ha ha! No, not really. 2017 was a deranged fever nightmare of unheralded poisonous despair, with heartbreaking loss and division.

Many people, places and things are under attack from the horror-show assclowns running our country, including cannabis.

To that end, thank whichever god(desses) you pray to that we have cannabis. No, seriously, thank them.

Because without it, this column wouldn’t exist, I’d have a William Burroughs-sized smack habit, and then things would start breaking bad. Extremely bad.

A record high (huh? huh?) 64 percent of Americans now support recreational cannabis programs, and that’s reflected in voting trends as well. In 2014, Washington and Colorado passed our nation’s first Adult Use cannabis programs. In 2017, we have six more states and Washington, D.C.,. joining the ranks of the danks.

As a nation, we really, really enjoy our cannabis. The year 2017 broke all expected sales numbers, with the ArcView Group reporting that sales will hit $10 billion by the end of the year. That’s up 33 percent from 2016’s sales figures, and 2018 is expected to be an even greater jump, as California will begin its rec program Jan. 1. The taxes from that $10 billion is paying for hundreds of programs and services. (Of course, none of that $10 billion ever made it into a bank legally, because it’s “drug money." Funny how the states collect taxes paid from that same drug money, and yet banks have no issues depositing that. (#creditunionsrule, #bankingreformnow) Forward motion make you sway like the ocean; the herb is more than just a powerful potion.

There is a growing chorus from unlikely corners that the Feds need to recognize cannabis is true medicine.

No less than the American Legion, not exactly known for its liberal leanings, voted in August to ask the current administration to allow doctors at the Veteran’s Administration to discuss medicinal cannabis with their patients, and in states where there is an existing MMJ program, to be allowed to suggest its use to patients. Considering the wide range of life-threatening service related ailments veterans can face, you would think this would be a no-brainer. Say, speaking of no brainers. ...

The Not So Good You can never make America great again. All you did was make this country hate again.

Trump is no friend to Mary Jane, and shifty eyed KKKebler Elf and Attorney General Jeff Sessions want everyone who partakes to crawl off and die.

Sessions spewed so many horrible lies about cannabis this year, I was hard pressed to just choose one. But this was my “favorite.”

“I reject the idea that America will be a better place if marijuana is sold in every corner store. And I am astonished to hear people suggest that we can solve our heroin crisis by legalizing marijuana—so people can trade one life-wrecking dependency for another that’s only slightly less awful. Our nation needs to say clearly once again that using drugs will destroy your life.” (Rebuttal: Fuuuuuuuuuuck yoooooooou.)

If you locked in the box, keep making it through, do the time, don’t let your time do you.

We keep arresting and incarcerating people of color for cannabis offenses at a far greater rate than we do whites. (African-Americans were nearly four times more likely than whites to be arrested for cannabis possession.) This...needs... to….stop. In 2017, NO ONE should be in a cage because of a plant.

Some cities, such as Oakland, have set aside half of their cannabis licenses for those specifically with a cannabis conviction, or for those who resided in one of 21 police districts with an “overabundance” of cannabis-related arrests.

Oakland nonprofit The Hood Incubator assists minority cannabis entrepreneurs, through training and mentoring.

For 2018, let’s wish for peace, prosperity and an end to cannabis prohibition for all.
