PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK
Scott Selle
PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST
This November marks one full year of Scott helping customers at the Redmond Library. Like many in Redmond, Scott is eager to step into the brand-new library later this year. “I enjoy finding creative solutions for customers who need help and troubleshooting issues on a daily basis,” he says. Libraries provide a safe space where people can pursue their interests or simply relax and unwind. Staff at the Redmond Library are dedicated to finding solutions and supporting lifelong learning. For instance, Scott makes great use of digital resources for learning and reading on the go. “I’ve been using Mango Languages a lot to brush up on my Spanish, and I get many of my e-books through Libby,” he shares. Next time you’re at the Redmond Library, ask Scott about his favorite reads by Terry Pratchett or his all-time favorite book, The Three Musketeers. “All for one and one for all!”
CUSTOMER PROFILE
Anastasia Zielinski
People visit the library to borrow everyday items like books and DVDs, but did you know you can even “borrow” a librarian? That’s exactly what visual artist and arts educator Anastasia Zielinski did when she decided to start her own business. Feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to begin, Anastasia turned to the library’s Book-a-Librarian program. She met Community Librarian Liisa, who listened carefully to her ideas and connected her with a SCORE small business representative. “That was the biggest help in getting my studio space and jumpstarting my business,” Anastasia said. Within 24 hours, a SCORE mentor reached out and they quickly set up a meeting at the library to brainstorm business ideas and explore affordable studio spaces. From that first meeting, Anastasia’s business plan took off. With guidance and encouragement, she found the perfect brick-and-mortar space for her studio in no time. Today, Anastasia’s dream has become a reality. Her studio, Freak’n Art, is now open in Bend. “I’m really excited to welcome people in and share my love and knowledge of art with the community.” You can watch a video of Anastasia discussing the library and her start-up process on our YouTube channel: dpl.pub/anastasia
Benham
If you had 100 years to read, how many books could you finish? Rosie celebrated her 100th birthday last November and she believed her love of reading and libraries contributed to her long, healthy life. Growing up in rural Hillsboro as the youngest of nine children, Rosie fondly recalled, “The most fun we had was going to the high school library and checking out books.” Rosie spent the last years of her life living with her daughter Terry and they made weekly visits to the Sisters Library. “Coming from Portland we weren’t sure if we would need to visit Bend to check out books, but Sisters has been wonderful,” Terry shares. With age comes wisdom and Rosie learned that she didn’t have to finish a library book if she wasn’t enjoying it. Instead, she relied on some favorite authors, like John Grisham, Michael Connelly and James Patterson. As Rosie said, “His plot moves quickly and doesn’t diddle along.” Rosie couldn’t quite recall where her love of reading began, but she always had a good library book by her side.
