ABOUT THE COVER ARTIST

Lilianne Fiacco

Lilianne is a Public Services Specialist at the Downtown Bend Library and cra ed the fun characters you’ll nd on the cover of this issue of the Events guide. “My inspiration behind the Summer with the Library characters came from my love for several books and stories I grew up with,” Lilianne says. “Redwall by Brian Jacques, Over the Garden Wall by Pat McHale, and the full works of Beatrix Potter, to name a few. I have a so spot for little forest animals in clothes, and it felt like a very tting theme to celebrate Summer with the Library in Central Oregon.” Lilianne says her favorite part of the Summer with the Library/Verano con la Biblioteca program is seeing people of all ages get excited about reading and nding joy in books.

PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK

Emily O’Neal

TECHNICAL SERVICES MANAGER

Have you ever wondered how library materials are circulated all over Deschutes County? There’s a technical side to the library that Emily oversees, where all materials, including print and digital books, Library of Things items, hot spots, book club kits, and more are cataloged and processed for circulation across Deschutes Public Libraries—and beyond! You can catch Emily with her nose in a spine-chilling novel, like those by author Grady Hendrix.

“More recently, I have taken to reading any book that has been a victim of censorship or has been challenged within a library setting,” says Emily. Beyond the dedication she has towards protecting the intellectual freedom rights of Oregonians, Emily recently transitioned the library’s classification system to Wayfinder, creating more welcoming and browsable spaces by classifying materials topically and by genre. As a result, Emily was named Librarian of the Year by the Oregon Library Association. “Receiving this award is the highest honor in my professional life! I’m proud to work with so many remarkable librarians across the state.”

CUSTOMER PROFILE

Martina Leon-Nelson

Kathryn

Godsiff

Martina loves having a library card because it helps her prepare for the Oregon Battle of the Books competition. Before this voracious reader even entered the fourth grade, she already had two library cards—one for DPL and another for her school.

Martina’s family moved to Sunriver from Mexico last year and she jumped right into DPL’s Summer Reading program. “Even in Mexico, Martina could keep up on her English reading through the library. That’s where she discovered her favorite books, The Land of Stories series,” says mom Amy. Not only is Martina a confident bilingual reader, but she is also a writer. She’s currently writing her second book about a squirrel that visits Disneyland. Martina’s family is taking advantage of library programs across Deschutes County. “We loved seeing the Train Man, attending Family Game Night, and Martina is looking forward to the new Graphic Novel book club.” Later this summer they’ll return to a new remodeled Sunriver Library to read, laugh, and play for years to come.

Kathryn grew up sailing around the San Juan Islands, book-in-hand, and stayed up well past her bedtime reading by flashlight. A college internship took her overseas to New Zealand where she met her future husband and they raised their three boys— along with a menagerie of farm animals. “Boredom was never an option,” says Kathryn. She always found time to read and even volunteered weekly at the Wellsford Library near Auckland. “You can always know what to expect at the library…calm, peace, and no judgement,” Kathryn says. Going on 20 years of volunteering with the Sisters Library, she has seen the library through its many iterations, including operating out of the Chamber of Commerce. A book-lover at heart, Kathryn’s TBR includes mainly fiction, “dealing with real people in real situations, and romance because I live a very romantic life.” Kathryn and her husband are celebrating 44 years of marriage and she has some words of wisdom to share: “Read lots of books, but be sure you read them outside.”

Bond Projects Update

Building for the Future

Deschutes Public Library is growing along with Deschutes County. The cities of La Pine and Sisters now have fully remodeled neighborhood libraries that feature more meeting rooms, interactive children’s discovery spaces, cutting-edge technology, and more. In Sunriver, a down-to-the-studs remodel is entering its final phase, with reopening planned for late August. And in Redmond, the all-new library—which is twice the size of the previous building—has taken shape inside and out; look for its doors to open at the end of this year.

In Bend, we’ve broken ground on the new Central Library at Stevens Ranch (check out our YouTube channel for a video of the groundbreaking: www. youtube.com/deschuteslibrary). Once complete in 2026, the Central Library at Stevens Ranch will allow for increased collections for all of Deschutes County and will help us move items more quickly between all library locations. The new library is located on 8.5 acres at the northeast corner of 27th Street and Wilderness Way in Bend and will incorporate community meeting and study rooms, co-working spaces, a children’s discovery area, a DIY zone, a café, and more. Plus, it and the Redmond Library are designed to be energy independent.

The Downtown Bend Library will be fully renovated and remodeled once the Central Library at Stevens Ranch is open to the public.

Visit dpl.pub/futurelibraries for more information about bondfunded construction and remodeling projects.
