IN RESPONSE TO: “DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY ENDORSEMENT: CLINTON” (4/29)

You say she is married to one of the most popular presidents in history.

Since Bill signed and wildly approved of NAFTA, he will never be deemed one of our great presidents, once everyone understands exactly how NAFTA destroyed American manufacturing jobs.

You praise the Clinton Foundation, which received major contributions from various totalitarian states such as Saudi Arabia while she was secretary of state, and she promptly approved of major arms sales to them, to the profit of our arms manufacturers and the destabilization of the world. I'd love to elect a woman for president, but not one who is totally in the pocket of Wall Street. She says she will confront the hedge fund managers, when her son-inlaw is a hedge fund manager? ~Don Schuman

ROADS, PARKS AND UTILITIES TO DO LIST Bend is a great and friendly city of the right size with a never-tiring view of the beautiful Cascade peaks, but no place is perfect so here are some suggestions for making Bend even better.

One) To Bend’s road planners: Please, please, please stop building those road rage triggers / slender fender benders / traffic circles, especially the scary twolane ones. How many potholes could be filled with the millions of dollars spent building each one? Many people don’t like them / fear them / avoid them.

Two) To the Bend Parks Department: Instead of building more ball diamonds and water parks, how about building a half-Olympic-size, shallow swimming pool dedicated for lane swimming only?

It is nearly impossible to have a lane to yourself at the Juniper pool so I’ve given up swimming as an exercise. A pool

would be used day and night year round, which is not possible with ball or water parks and ice rinks. Of course, a lanedpool would not attract tourist dollars like those other features do; it would just keep us residents healthy so it’s not as important.

Three) To the City of Bend Utilities Department: Please stop billing neighborhoods for the maintenance of storm sewer lines which they do not have and please refund all of those residents’ payments which have been collected in error over the years. It taxes my credulity that $60 per household per year is necessary even for the neighborhoods with storm sewers, much less those without! We live in a freakin’ desert that gets eleven inches of precipitation per year! How many Bend households have been flooded over the years due to clogged storm drains? And why are the storm sewer payments sent to Seattle for processing? Why doesn’t the City of Bend Utilities Department handle its own revenue collection? Guilty conscience? ~Eddie Kinnamon

IN RESPONSE TO “TINY HOMES” (3/23) If Bend is really looking for low cost housing, tiny homes on expensive lots are not the answer. Most people really do not want to live in a 300 to 400 square foot house, and most people do not want them squeezed into their neighborhoods.

I was a mobile home dealer in Bend for 15 years and sold over 800 homes (not RVs). They provided a safe, code compliant and cost-effective housing for lower income residents. So why not develop a factory housing subdivision on the massive undeveloped city-owned Juniper Ridge land. This can address both the cost of land and the cost of a housing structure. ~Allan Bruckner

Show how local you really are by driving in Bend like it's still 1995. Franklin Avenue downtown is 20 mph, so drive at 20. The parkway is 45, so drive 45.

Leave generous space between your car and the car ahead of you. And put your damned phone down.

Junk it and start over with strict laws that will at least lessen the potential for special interest groups pocketing the best politicians money can buy. TERM LIMITS, NOT CAREER POLITICIANS

I find it appalling that a nation of over three hundred million people could not produce two better presidential candidates than Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. It’s like having a choice between being stabbed or shot. I place the blame for this squarely at the feet of a political system that has, over time, evolved to be self-serving, feckless and corrupt.

For those of you who can’t fathom the appeal of Trump, it isn’t so much based on who he is. It’s based on, rightly or

I am shocked that the Source would recommend Clinton in the primary -- in an article containing specious arguments and half truths. "However nice, smart guys don't always make the best presidents." You mean like FDR or Lincoln?

Or are you just thinking of Obama while you aim at the highly experienced Sanders? "Clinton has experience..." Yes, but what is the nature of that experience?

She voted for the Iraq War, was responsible for the collapse of Libya into chaos and ISIS, would like to go to war with Iran, and her proposal of a no-fly zone in Syria is an even worse provocation for the Russians than Obama's destroyer in the Baltic Sea.

We are developing a serious safety issue.

The parkway has a 45 MPH limit all the way through town, but somehow people are doing 65. Between Bend and Redmond, the speed limit is now 65, but people are doing 80. And the police don't seem to care. More people moving faster on crowded roads means more danger, and it is already starting to show.

I have seen more accidents in town and

Did you know that one in three young women in the United States will become pregnant before she even turns 20? In fact, nearly 750,000 teenagers in this country will become pregnant this year alone. Getting pregnant as a teen can have serious consequences for a young person’s future. Becoming a parent as a teenager affects young people’s ability to finish school, influences their ability to make a living and can affect their children in numerous ways.

For some communities, teen pregnancy is even more of an issue. For example, teen pregnancy rates among rural teens are higher than their urban peers. (Jefferson County’s teen pregnancy rate is twice that of Deschutes County.) Meanwhile, lesbian and bisexual teenagers are twice as likely as their heterosexual peers to become pregnant unintentionally.

The good news is that we know what works to prevent teen pregnancy. Research shows that comprehensive sex education—the type of education provided by Planned Parenthood—helps young people delay sex and increases

the use of contraception and condoms when they do become sexually active.

Sex education is also supported by the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics—and by a majority of Americans, including more than 90 percent of parents and teens.

Unfortunately, a new study indicates that fewer U.S. teens are receiving formal sex education now than in the past. The Guttmacher Institute analyzed data on students from 2006-10 and from 2011-13, and researchers found that, between the two survey periods, the proportion of teens who reported receiving formal education about birth control decreased from 70 li Li percent to 60 percent among females and from 61 percent to 55 percent among males. Even worse: 43 percent of adolescent females and 57 percent of adolescent males did not receive information about birth control before they had sex for the first time. br er a

hey don’t always ask, but teens need our help with so many things: homework, learning to drive, dating—and, yes, avoiding unintended pregnancy. While the teen pregnancy rate has declined significantly over the past two decades, it’s still a serious issue in Central Oregon. May is National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, and it’s a good reminder that we all need to help teens get the information and resources, and build the skills they need to stay healthy and prevent pregnancy until they’re ready to become parents.

Dear Tenant, You Must Vacate the Premises

Many fear homelessness awaits them

“This is to notify you that your tenancy will be terminated and you must vacate the premises you now occupy no later than 11:59 p.m. (end of day) on 6/30/16.”

Across the parking lot, Sabino “Sal” Torres lives in unit #201. A veteran, he has resided at the Fireside Condos for more than seven years. He, too, is

n a quickly gentrifying neighborhood in northwest Bend, just a few blocks from Newport Avenue Market, the 44 people who call the Fireside Lodge Condominiums home will soon be without a basic human need: shelter. Bend’s affordable housing crisis is no longer down the road somewhere in the distant future for them. As market values soar and rental vacancy rates approach

zero, the recent sale of the multifamily property, followed by notices to vacate, make their housing prospects uncertain at best.

Located along Newport Avenue and Knoxville, within one mile from downtown Bend, the tenants of 20 units say they were assured last year that a sale would not affect them. Units were rented to new tenants as late as January 2016.

However, in February, one owner sold 10 units for $1,275,000. Soon, another owner sold 10 units. That left only two units in the Fireside Condos untouched.

In a letter dated April 27, 2016, from Chris Thelan, Manager of SUNDOG KNOXVILLE, LLC, with a Bend P.O. Box, tenants of the sold units received the following information: “Dear Tenant, Due to an extensive remodel and construction plans for the property, it is necessary for SUNDOG KNOXVILLE, LLC to vacate all units. SUNDOG KNOXVILLE, LLC will be terminating all existing rental agreements.”

The letter cites Oregon Landlord-Tenant laws, requiring tenants to vacate in accordance with the official posting of notice. It includes instructions about returning keys, apartment inspections, and leaving a forwarding address for the return of security deposits, (“less any damages noted”). The letter closes: “Thank you for your cooperation. We appreciate your tenancy and understand that relocating under any circumstance can be stressful.”

On the following day, April 28, 2016, a notice of termination was delivered to the occupant of #305, Thomas Niedzwiedcki, a father of three and

Shanna Stevenson, who lives next door in unit #304, moved into the Fireside Condos seven years ago. Stevenson, 58, previously worked in construction, but now suffers from rheumatoid arthritis. Her son takes care of her, and like Niedzwiedcki, she is proud to say she has never been late paying the rent.

Unfortunately, that has no bearing on the owner's right to deliver what are often referred to as “no-cause eviction" notices, which are legal in Oregon.

Stevenson pays $775 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. She is disabled and living on a fixed income. "We will be living in a homeless camp," she says, when asked where she will go.

The home of Neidzweicki, 50, and Nicole McGarry, 48, includes family photos on the wall and many keepsakes.

A couch and a recliner fill the living room and a dining table doubles as a home office, where McGarry reviews the paperwork. She hasn’t slept in three days. Like several others in the building, she says she feels helpless, understanding that what is happening to them is legal, but not knowing what to do. She focuses her attention on the security deposit, hopeful that a careful list of damage that came with the apartment, but was never repaired, will be honored.

There is extesnsive deferred maintenance at the Fireside Condominius, including a community recreation room that has been closed for years.

Redfin lists the median price per square foot in this neighborhood (zip code 97701) as $243, compared to $229 for Bend, and $205 for Deschutes County.

The Fireside Lodge Condominiums at 754 to 816 square feet each, sold for far below the median market price per square foot.

The Fireside Association of Unit Owners previously included several owners,

worried his deposit won’t be returned to him in time to use it to move. Several other residents voice the same concern.

Landlords are required to return security deposits within 30 days after tenants depart (or provide an accounting for why the deposit was not returned).

However, many tenants say they need the funds to help with a move.

Torres, 65, has lost hope. “Even as old as I am, I feel trapped now. I have to get the money to get out of here,” he says.

A stained glass artist, he has held on to the last of the glass from his former shop. Recently, he donated much of his art to help raise money for children with leukemia. “I enjoy helping people," he says. He has trouble finding work, except as a laborer, and doesn’t drive, which will make relocating to a new neighborhood more difficult. “We were told no changes would be made, then we all get evicted,” he says. He estimates that he needs $3,000 to move.

Leia Carneado, 40, lives in unit #103 and pays $650 per month for her apartment. She has lived there for seven years and fears, like the others, that she will have nowhere but the streets to go.

She says, “SunDog, LLC, is just another investor with no heart.” She adds, “[The new owner] has deep pockets and lied to all of us.” She imagines him “flying high in his airplane, looking down at his expensive life.” She describes the situation as oppressive and disruptive.

The online listing for 10 units of the Fireside Lodge Condos, located at 1302 NW Knoxville, Bend, built in 1982, was reduced to $1,395,000 last year. The property sold for $1,275,000, on Feb. 29, 2016. The photos featured with the listing are of Torres’ very clean apartment, recognizable by the stained glass art that he makes hanging in the window.

Torres says he paid his rent on time for more than seven years and tries to keep the area clean and safe. “To get booted out seems wrong, even if it’s within the confines of the law,” he says.

The displaced tenants, several on fixed incomes, need assistance with finding affordable housing and help with being relocated. SW

Congress will decide on “Draft America’s Daughters Act of 2016”

I

n December, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter lifted all gender-based combat restrictions. Now, the U.S. House Armed Services Committee has voted 32 to 30 for an amendment to the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which if passed by Congress, would require women age 18 to 26 to register for conscription for the first time in U.S. history. H.R. 4478 would amend the Military Selective Service Act by striking “every male citizen” and incerting “all citizens.”

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., voted against the amendment.

The Iraq War veteran proposed it for the sake of starting a congressional conversation about the role of women in the military. “It’s wrong and irresponsible to make wholesale changes to the way America fights its wars without the American people having a say on whether their daughters and sisters will be on the front lines of combat.”

However, Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., supported the measure, commenting that if women want to be treated as men and not discriminated against, “We should be willing to support a universal conscription.”

Combat roles are open to women in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Denmark, Israel, Germany, New Zealand and Norway. However, of those countries, only Israel drafts women, who are allowed to take a religious exemption, and one-third do. Other than Israel, only Bolivia, North Korea, Chad, Mozambique and Eritrea draft women into military service.

Since the Vietnam War, the United States has not held a military draft, yet continues to require all young men to register with the Selective Service within 30 days of turning 18. The Selective Service Act

of 1917 was enacted to raise a compulsory army for the U.S. to enter World War I. The United States mobilized 4.3 million men for World War I, with 2.8 million men drafted. Previously, women were excluded from the draft because combat positions were not open to them.

In fact, the Selective Service Act of 1917, enacted by the 65th United States Congress, was put in place before women gained the right to vote. Women’s suffrage in the United States was not granted until 1920 when Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

Prior to that, the campaign for women’s rights, and women’s suffrage began 100 years earlier, winning victories with women’s property rights beginning in 1839.

Prior to that, married women could not own property, earn a salary or enter into contracts.

Now, not quite 100 years since women received the right to vote, should women be required to register for the draft?

Once again, it will be elected representatives in Congress who will decide. For now, the debate is open. Starting the conversation, the Source asked men and women what they think about women being drafted, and the draft in general. Here are a few of the responses.

“Having grown up in a military family, I have always felt that the draft is an emergency, last resort to mobilize a large fighting force that can be effective.(World War II would have been lost without it.) It was my father’s experience having gone from a draft, Vietnam environment, to an all-volunteer service, that the all-volunteer environment is far more preferable and makes for a much more effective military. Women cannot pick and choose where they want gender equality to appear in our society.

If they expect it at all, there should be no limitations. There are many examples in our military’s past that have shown us how capable women are to serve.”

“I believe we have the most professional and admired armed services in the world, and that stems from having an all-volunteer force of professional soldiers. Using the draft to fill the ranks of the military would be a mistake, but if ever this country needed every able body to protect itself that should include every able body, regardless of sex, religion, or creed, so I support the selective service including women, but most importantly, hope we never need it. MEGAN MOONEY “First off, I am opposed to war and the draft. I think this is a complicated issue with all of the heat currently surrounding women’s rights and equality in the workplace, which I am all for. However, I don’t think all women are physically capable to perform all of the duties expected of a soldier. With that being said there are many women who are perfectly capable but categorizing all women into one category for the draft would be unreasonable. It all comes down to physical stature and in general women are much smaller than men, so drafting a 110-lb. women doesn’t make sense to me.

But I guess it is a step forward for equality for women? Maybe not forward but sideways.”

MEAH CUKROV "I feel like women have been fighting for a really long time to gain rights that are on a more equal ground with men's rights, and that opening all combat positions to women and requiring us to register for the draft does this. Albeit, in a very small arena for women's rights. I think the draft is antiquated and could be done away with, yet I understand the need for a plan B. Being as our military has been volunteer-based for many years and we have good numbers enlisted, it seems we could do without."

WATKINS: I hesitate to even imagine but I’m going to go with park ranger.

SOURCE: Would you do another tour like The Watkins Family Hour where you have a special guest on tour with you, like you had with Fiona Apple, or would you focus on the core crew?

WATKINS: Well, Fiona is a part of the core crew. Not everyone in the core crew can make every show, even when we’re doing our hometown residence at Largo.

The main thing about the family hour is the mixing of musicians. Mixing in new ways. The more unlikely, the better.

SOURCE: Do you have a favorite style of music? You bounce so easily between genres that I was curious whether you felt more at home in folk, bluegrass, blues?

Sean Watkins brings a wealth of musical styles and influences to The Belfry in Sisters, 5/17.

Sean Watkins has been making music since 1989 and none of what he releases is predictable. Comparing his music with Nickel Creek with his solo work shows the depth and breadth of the man’s talent and his abilities as singer, songwriter and guitarist. It’s very easy to pigeonhole him as simply a bluegrass artist, but that would be overlooking his artistic tendrils into pop, folk, country and old-time mountain music.

His new album, “What to Fear,” was released in March of this year and is another beautiful showcase of his stellar songwriting ability. Watkins will play at The Belfry in Sisters on May 17, and took time out of his busy schedule to talk to the Source about his music, direction and what to expect at his upcoming show.

SOURCE WEEKLY: Has music always been a part of your life? The ease and comfort you show onstage seems earned through a lifetime of doing it.

SEAN WATKINS: Yes, it has. I started playing on stage when I was 9. I’ve gone through various levels of being comfortable on stage but at this point I feel better than ever. It’s really fun to get up on

stage with a good listening audience and just go with the flow. It’s like hosting a party. You have to read the room and vibes and work with it and if you find the right balance and the crowd goes home happy, it’s extremely satisfying.

SOURCE: Will the show be primarily stuff from “What to Fear,” or will you be doing pieces from Nickel Creek, Watkins Family Hour and some of your other projects?

WATKINS: I do about half the songs on “What To Fear” and also a smattering of other stuff. A couple Nickel Creek songs, songs from “All I Do Is Lie” and a cover or two.

SOURCE: What would you be doing if you

WATKINS: Bluegrass and new/acoustic/ folk, whatever you want to call it, will always be my musical home, but I always will be branching out into new areas. I like good music and any kind of music can be good as well as bad. Music, like any art, is about conveying a feeling, and why would you want to feel the same feeling all the time? I don’t understand the mindset of being into only one kind of music. Why limit yourself in that way?

SOURCE: Working on any more classic covers like “Not in Nottingham?” I was really happy I got to see that last time you played here.

WATKINS: The two covers I have been singing lately are “Walk Away, Renee,”

by Left Banke and “I Go To Pieces,” by Peter and Gordon.

SOURCE: How would you describe one of your shows to someone who isn’t familiar with your music? What should they expect?

WATKINS: Transcendence. Hah, sorry.

Evie Ladin Band “Jump the Fire” Released May 6 Evie Ladin opens for the Stray Birds on May 24 at the Old Stone Performing Arts Center (previously the Old Stone Church). The Stray Birds is an acoustic trio on a coast-tocoast tour, stopping by Bend between gigs in Ashland and Eugene.

The Evie Ladin Band just released its new album, “Jump the Fire,” earlier this month.

The album is a good example of the influence of African and African-American music on the Appalachian music that is a part of the Evie Ladin Band’s sound. “Pulling out the polyrhythmic syncopations of the banjo, percussion, bass lines, the African Diaspora is all over this music,” says Ladin.

Her influences include traditional and contemporary musicians, from Roscoe Holcomb to Prince. “As a teenager I was especially influenced by neo-trad bands of the time like the Heartbeats and the Horseflies, who expand the old music into vastly new territory,” she says.

Although asking an artist to choose a favorite song is akin to choosing a favorite child, Ladin says “Cozy” really reaches into peoples’ feel-good place. It’s a smooth follow-up to the title track, “Jump the Fire,” an ode to summer festivals and folk music.

Folk operetta comes into play in “Only You” and “Under the Waterline.”

The Evie Ladin Band combines Appalachian claw hammer banjo, guitar, bass and percussive dance, with contemporary storytelling and conversation between the band members. Ladin’s band includes jazz drummer and contemporary music artist Keith Terry on bass, body music, percussion and vocals. Erik Pearson completes the trio on guitar, bass, banjo and vocals. The group’s three-part harmony goes right to the heart when performed live and on the new album, “Jump the Fire,” produced by Eli West and mixed by Bruce Kaphan. SW

“Ballet Treasures” opens May 13 27

The Victor School of Performing Arts (VSPA) is now in its third year, founded by Joy Victor, a ballet dancer formerly with the American Ballet Theatre in New York. “I have been dancing my entire life,” says Victor. “I started at age 8 and in my teens and had the blessing of being able to perform and learn from some of the most talented teachers around the globe.” Victor performed onstage with some of the top ballet dancers in the world, including Mikhail Baryshnikov. “From that, I have a responsibility to share what I know to these students,” she says.

“Ballet Treasures,” will be performed as a collection of classical ballet, performed in beautiful bejeweled costumes. Young audience members will be presented with surprise treasure boxes throughout the program. Victor’s ballerinas began rehearsal in October, sometimes working multiple hours every day in order to perfect the elegance and strength that ballet demands.

Victoria Sargent, 16, began dancing as a toddler. Ballet has become a lifestyle for this motivated young performer and what she learns, she applies toward other avenues in her life. “It is a way to express your emotions. It is a lot of discipline, self-criticism and dedication that I can apply to things like school,” she says. “Ballet takes a lot of work, not just on the body, but in the heart and soul as well.” Sargent explains that even one’s face needs to be a reflection of the dance.

Ashley Foster, also 16, agrees with her classmate about the amount of time and energy it takes to perfect just one performance, but in the end, they both agree that it is worth it.

Foster is looking forward to dancing in front of the stained glass windows of the former Old Stone Church. “The windows, the dancing, it’s like something out of a movie. The art and the history between what we are doing and the church makes a fantasy more like an actuality,” she says. The pairing between the venue and the content seems to be one of divine assembly.

Owner of OSPAC, Peter Geiser says that they are blessed and he and the newest addition to the operation, Destry Cloud, are enthusiastic about the direction this arts venue is going, and very excited for the ballet. Cloud speaks of the broad potential of the center. “We are open to consider everything, to try what we think will work and see where we can go from there. We are a work in creation,” she says.

Both discuss rebranding efforts, now and for the future. “We aren’t trying to compete with the other venues out there. They have already found their niche and are doing great in their own way. We have yet to define ours,” says Geiser. “Right now we are only accountable to ourselves, and that can make us very light on our feet.”

“Faces of the Deschutes” This year, Deschutes County turns 100. For its birthday party celebration, the county and the Deschutes County Historical Society are throwing a yearlong celebration that will focus on the area's, past, present and future. Local actor and playwright Clinton Clark has been commissioned to write a threepart look into the area's history called “Faces of the Deschutes.”

“The play profiles four of our county's founding fathers, and one mother, and tells stories of our home 100 years ago today” says Clark.” The event tours throughout the county from May 14 to May 22 at free events kicking off at the Deschutes Historical Society, and traveling to venues in Sisters, La Pine, Sunriver and Terrebone First on the list of historical figures is James Jerome Hill, builder of the railroad to the area.

Clark says, “I found an awesome speech he gave on Oct 5, 1911, the day the railroad was finished and was able to dramatize and work the speech into the play. Also, local actor Russ Seaton has played the part before so it just clicked.”

Next to be dramatized will be George and Dorothy Putnam who came to Bend in 1911. Clark explains: “George was quickly made mayor in May of 1912, at the age of 25, because the mayor at the time was killed in a saloon brawl," says Clark. “His stories, from his autobiography, about living in Bend were splendid and I was able to imagine how he would've told them in his own voice.”

Lastly, “Faces of the Deschutes” will focus on Alexander Drake, Bend’s founder. “He arrived in Bend in 1900 when the population was just 21,” says Clark. “Essentially he set the stage for Bend for the next 80 years.” SW

tep back in time to the 1930s, with a fashion show, music and dance, part of “Art for a Nation: Inspiration from the Great Depression,” a special High Desert Museum collaboration. The fashion show, curated by Linda Evans, will take place at the Tower Theatre on Friday, May 13. This lively and entertaining event is meant to entice even the least bit interested person in becoming a seeker of more information.

Deschutes County celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2016, and not only has Bend changed dramatically, so has the style of dress. “Nothing is more personal than clothes,” says Evans, curator of living history for the museum. She brings the period pieces to life through the models presenting and donning the garments, which span the time period from the mid-1920s to the beginning of World War II. “When you take vintage clothes off the hangers and place them on a body, the clothes reveal a very personal connection to the history of a time,” she says. Evans is quite pleased to have such an array of outfits from which to choose. “These garments are from the Deschutes Historical Museum, Forest Service and Goodwill Industries, as well as a few pieces from private collections,” she says.

She passionately discusses how society is shaped by human interaction, both social and political. For example, “Fashion changes dramatically when war enters the scene,” says Evans. She talks about not just the restrictions on fabrics and materials, but also the restrictions

of emotion about loss. “People want to start over. They want to put the war behind them. They want, and even need that change,” she says, explaining that these changes were reflections of what people were experiencing at that time.

“During the Great Depression, a dark time in history, people showed perseverance and determination to survive,” she notes.

The 1930s fashion show is intended to educate, not through a standard history lesson, but as one that comes alive. “I want the people of Bend to come experience the sights and sounds of the era. These are the times that our parents and grandparents lived through. It is what has shaped us to be who we are today,” she says.

Evans’ inspiration found its genesis going through her mother and grandmother’s clothing as a child, and in particular, an inheritance of 1880s attire that set her young mind spinning.

“It wasn’t enough for me just to play dress-up. I needed to know more,” she says. The hand-made garments belonging to her ancestors sparked questions. “Who was she? Why had this simple farmer’s wife possessed such an elegant dress like this?” Evans asked. Her curiosity turned into a career as she began to research and realize that each garment, every stitch, and each piece of fabric has not only a purpose behind it, but a story to tell. SW

Deschutes Brewery & Public House Celebrates National Burger Month

This year the month started on a Sunday with its first offering of a garlic burger, but the real deal came the next day with the fan favorite burger, which is decided by the recommendations made from the public via Facebook.

Chef Brian Kerr says it’s important to make sure the community feels heard and appreciated as a way of thanking them for a huge part of the company’s success. “It is important to us to cultivate an experience for our guests; it’s not always about just making money,” says Kerr.

Chris McLaughlin, a server at the local pub for six years, echoes Kerr’s sentiment about the desire for input from the public. He says the whole crew cares very much about people. “When you get a group of people that are this excited and passionate about what they do, it’s contagious,” he says.

This time, the variety pack is named after the regular Beer Camp conferences Sierra Nevada holds with other brewers in the business, and it’s an even bigger deal than the 2014 release.

The 12-pack features six different beers, each representing a different region of the US and each a collaboration between SN and five different breweries from that region. The breweries in question are a who’s who of craft, from big regional names such as Bear Republic and Dogfish Head to smaller beer-nerd favorites including Boston’s Trillium, Georgia’s Creature Comforts Brewing, and Barley Brown’s Beer from our own glorious state of Oregon.

The latter contributed to Moxee-Moron, an Imperial Session IPA named after the town of Moxee in the Yakima

Valley of Washington. Despite clocking in at 7.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), it stays remarkably approachable despite bursting at the seams with hop aromas. Simcoe and Mosaic hops from Yakima are the stars here, with some Citra and other experimental varieties thrown in to add to the aroma.

The result is heavily citrus-y and quite addictive—a pity there’s only two in the box.

Other notable beers in the pack include the thick and rich Stout of the Union from a group of SoCal breweries, and Family Values, a heavy brown ale created with ingredients from the Upper Midwest. Lastly, Sweet Sunny South is a table beer made with saison yeast that’s perfect for porch-side sipping.

The 12-pack is out now and should reach Bend stores by the time this hits print. In tandem with this, Sierra Nevada is launching a series of Beer Camp festivals across the country, with samples on offer from over 100 breweries at each location. The nearest one to here will be held in Seattle on June 11. SW

Marvel Swings For The Fences

"Captain America: Civil War" is an idealogical trip to the MCU

aptain America debuted in Marvel Comics in March of 1941, based on the character of Steve Rogers, a young man whose parents have died, who grew up during the Great Depression. Trying to enlist for World War II to fight the Nazis, he fails to pass the physical requirements, but is invited to take part in Operation Rebirth, with the goal to physically enhance soldiers to perfection. Seventy-five years later, real-world Defense Advanced Research Projects (DARPA) make the present day eerily similar, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could seem daunting to someone who hasn’t seen any of the movies.

“Captain America: Civil War” is the 13th film in the series, which dates back to 2008’s Iron Man and includes the three “Iron Man” films, The “Incredible Hulk”, two “Thor” films, three “Captain America” films, two “Avengers” movies, “Ant-Man”, “Guardians of The Galaxy” and this November’s “Doctor Strange.”

The idea of a massive, shared cinematic universe is a bold one. It is also one that DC Comics is trying to ape with “Man

of Steel,” “Batman V. Superman” and the upcoming “Justice League,” and that Universal will soon copy with its Universal Monsters shared universe. DC already failed in its bid because apparently, the architect of said universe, director Zack Snyder, fails to understand what makes Superman and Batman endure within the context of a cultural paradigm.

Marvel not only understands why Captain America and its other superheroes are important and lasting, it succeeds in its shared universe for multiple reasons.

Casting is a huge part of the MCU’s success. Watching Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans (as Captain America, “Cap”), Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Chris Pratt and others breathe life into these strong characters is a joy. That sense of fun carries over into the scripts and direction, making the MCU feel like a giant playground where anything can happen.

The Captain America films have always been the most serious in the Universe, with “The Winter Soldier” taking the basic superhero formula and applying it

to a spy thriller, easily making it the most interesting in the MCU. “Civil War” takes Cap, Hawkeye, Falcon, Bucky, AntMan and Scarlet Witch and pits them against Iron Man, War Machine, Black Widow, Black Panther, The Vision and Spider-Man. It’s a testament to the script and direction that the film can have this many heroes AND introduce Black Panther and a new Spider-Man and not feel overstuffed.

There’s much more to it, but basically “Civil War” is a $250 million comic book movie with a central conflict based entirely on a set of ideological and philosophical disagreements. Not much time is needed in the script to set up this clash, since 12 movies have already laid the groundwork. It will be easy for someone not versed in the MCU to enjoy “Civil War,” but the character relationships and backstory will be somewhat obscure.

This is where the shared universe comes in handy. After the events of the Avengers films and “The Winter Soldier,” the world’s governments fear the power of the Avengers to cross borders and fight threats without any accountability.

Secretary of State Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt returning from “The Incredible Hulk”) gives The Avengers an ultimatum to sign an accord making the team responsible to the United Nations, or turn in their capes and retire. Stark thinks it’s a great idea because he almost destroyed the world a few times and should be held accountable, but Cap refuses, resisting a loss of freedom to choose his own battles.

Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Bucky, Rhodey, Natasha Romanoff and the rest grow through each one of these films. Character development is never sacrificed and all of the action is so exciting because the last eight years of the MCU have created a group of people worth caring about.

Even with comic book movies reaching total market saturation years ago, it would be hard not to be excited about everything Marvel has in store. SW

The Yard Dogs Road Show is a 13-member traveling carnival/burlesque/rock show formed in 1999, and touring nationally since 2005. This is a screening of a documentary about the group, made by the people involved with the road show and features appearances by Ken Kesey, Speed Levitch, Beats Antique and Michael Franti.

Part of the Art and Architecture in Cinema series, “Monet to Matisse” is based on the exhibition from the Royal Academy of Arts. This selection focuses on the modern garden and the different textures and palates brought to the subject by various painters in history. In cinemas for one show only.

John Hughes directed this classic that deserves being seen on the big screen, although the fact that this is the 30th anniversary of the film means that time is moving too quickly through the hourglass. Matthew Broderick stars as the young Ferris Bueller, skipping school and not getting caught.

elcome to the Summer Movie Preview. Last weekend’s arrival of “Captain America: Civil War” was the early dawn of 2016’s summer movie season. There will be big actors, enormous explosions and the largest budgets the American film industry has ever seen this year.

The following mandatory fun list includes the bigger flicks of May and June, continuing next week with July and August releases.

May 13 “Money Monster” What it’s about: George Clooney is a smarmy television financial advisor who is held hostage on live TV by a man who lost everything to Wall Street.

Also starring Julia Roberts and featuring Jodie Foster in the director’s chair, “Money Monster” is an old-fashioned prestige picture.

What to expect: Expect conflicted feelings, unbridled intensity and seething anger toward those without morals who take without thought.

Worth Seeing?: It might be heavy-handed, but will be a nice break between summer superheroes and special effects.

May 20 “Neighbors 2” What it’s about: This time instead of being stuck next door to a horrific fraternity, Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne must do battle with a sorority led by Chloe Grace Moretz. They team up

with past enemy Zac Efron for the fracas with drunk teenage girls and loud music.

What to expect: The trailer has more of the same stuff as the first, but the original is underrated and made Zac Efron look like a real human boy.

Worth seeing? Even the worst X-titles have entertaining bits (e.g. “X-Men Origins: Wolverine), so it should be worth seeing for a laugh if nothing else.

Worth Seeing?: For fans of the original, this should hit that sweet giggle spot.

June 10 “Warcraft”

May 20 “The Nice Guys” What it’s about: Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are private dicks who team up to take on the Los Angeles mob in the 1970s. It’s “Chinatown” meets “Boogie Nights” with a dash of “Big Lebowski.”

What to expect: Writer/Director Shane Black was behind such classics as “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” “Lethal Weapon” and “The Monster Squad.” In other words, expect a modern classic with unlimited re-watch potential.

Worth seeing?: Make the plans to see it now so May 20 doesn’t creep up too quickly. Take time off from work if needed.

May 27 “X-Men: Apocalypse” What it’s about: The ancient mutant villain Apocalypse steps up to James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender’s X-Men, looking to bring the pain.

Much computer generated imagery (CGI)/wizardry ensues.

What to expect: Following “Days of Future Past,” this one should balance exciting X-action with character de-

What it’s about: Some nerdy nerds nerded and Warcraft was born. Orcs and humans team up to fight something that is destroying their shared world.

What to expect: David Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, is a smart director. His film “Moon” is a modern sci-fi classic. Expect this to be better than the incredibly dire trailers.

Worth seeing: Very little early word of mouth on this one, but Legendary Entertainment’s character videos are posted to its YouTube channel and the latest features half-orc assassin Garona.

It’s worth taking a chance on Jones.

June 10 “The Conjuring 2” What it’s about: Ed and Lorraine Warren are back! This time they head to England to deal with a creepy demon spirit that hates Lorraine.

What to expect: James Wan improves with each film he directs and the original was a creepy blast, so one hopes this sequel will deliver the same tone without the same scares.

Worth seeing: Horror fans should be there with bells on. Creepy, creepy bells.

June 17 “Finding Dory” What it’s about: This is a sequel to a 13-year old cartoon!! Nemo and his dad go on a journey with Dory to search for her family. Hijinks ensue.

What to expect: Aside from Randy Newman songs? Probably Pixar’s usual blend of heart, hilarity and an important lesson or two.

Worth seeing: Pixar is usually a good bet. Let’s just hope this is more “Toy Story 2” and less “Cars 2.”

June 24 Independence Day: Resurgence What it’s about: A sequel to a 22-year old movie!! Will Smith’s character has died, so Jeff Goldblum and Liam Hemsworth must fight aliens sans goofy wisecracks.

What to expect: Expect to see every landmark on the planet explode as Goldblum looks on in horror.

Worth seeing: Of course. It’s probably going to be terrible, but at least it will be terribly fun. SW

Expect fish out of water shenanigans.

BORN TO BE BLUE: Ethan Hawke plays the legendary jazz musician Chet Baker in this semi-factual retelling of a year of his life. When his teeth are knocked out, Baker has trouble playing his trumpet better than a novice, so a dark and depressing period of his life ensued. THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR: With a cast featuring three of the most talented female actresses on the planet, “The Hunstman” should be a guaranteed good movie. Somehow, the terrible marketing for a sequel to a useless movie doesn’t inspire much confidence.

At one point, he approached the U.S. Department of Interior to promote the formation of a national park. Although that idea did not germinate, he was relentless in his pursuit of acquiring the present park lands of over 1.4 million acres. Beginning with just over 300 acres provided by Borax Consolidated LTD of London, England, most of the land acquisition occurred between 1949 and 1957. The State Park was named after Boardman at the time of his retirement and officially dedicated with a monument on Aug. 7, 1970.

The city of Gold Beach, Oregon, provides a perfect starting point to launch an exploration of Boardman State Park and many other state parks found in the area. Gold Beach, originally named Ellensburg, is located at the mouth of the famous Rogue River where gold was found. The town, which eventually took

to China Beach offers a longer 7-mile hike through rolling dunes high above the ocean. Natural Bridges features a short trail to seven beautiful arched rocks and blowholes, which is one of the more popular sights. Secret Beach and Thunder Rock Cove, is another popular destination offering great photo opportunities in Boardman State Park.

Arch Rock, a short walk that provides views of a series of sea stacks and islands, is another option. Boardman begins about 13 miles south of Gold Beach and stretches to within two miles of the city of Brookings.

There are safety precautions to keep in mind while hiking the area. Cliffs can be unstable, so it’s best to enjoy the views from behind guardrails and fences. At beach level, large, unexpected waves are common, and tides can roll in quickly.

There are strong ocean currents. Hikers are encouraged to leave only footprints.

Park officials urge users not to carve or dig anywhere and to pack out what they pack in. SW

The Bend Park & Recreation District (BPRD) is offering an adult, full-day, 9-mile Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe paddle tour that will traverse flat water and offer ample opportunities to view wildlife. Registration includes lunch and equipment.

oyotes are back—or always seem to be—in the news. One tried to run off with a small dog out near the Sisters Airport a while back, but the owner's big dog changed the coyote's mind and it dropped the little dog.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has, over the years, really tried to look at coyotes as an integral part of Oregon's wildlife ecosystem. Scientifically, coyotes are a very important part of the Central Oregon wildlife community, in just about every way anyone cares to look at them. The fact that they'll eat just about any game animal they can catch is enough to make that statement true.

Here's what ODFW says when dealing with coyotes: "Most of the time, coyotes are considered to be more of a nuisance than actually a threat. Prevention is always the best medicine when it comes to avoiding, minimizing or correcting problems with coyotes.”

Coyote behavior makes it tough to love them, understand them, or live near them, but ODFW has made a wonderful attempt to advise the residents of Oregon about how to get along with our native relative of the wolf.

According to ODFW, the greatest number of conflicts between humans and coyotes are those in which the animal has become habituated to a residential area by the behavior of human beings.

Fortunately, most of these situations are easily prevented or corrected by removing food sources and access to shelter.

Indeed, the behavior of human beings does play a huge role in the relationship between wildlife and humans; feeding deer is one prime example. Another is allowing a little dog to run loose where coyotes come to play. Even feeding birds, if overdone, can attract predators.

Here are ODFW’s suggestions for wise human behavior to prevent unwanted wildlife interactions: 1. Do not leave small children unattended outdoors if coyotes have been frequenting the area.

2. Feed pets indoors and do not leave pet food or water bowls outside 3. Supervise pets when they are outside; if possible, keep them leashed. Do not leave cats or small dogs out after dark 4. Secure garbage and garbage cans in an area inaccessible to wild animals (use bleach to remove odors that could attract coyotes) 5. Harvest fruits and vegetables as they become ripe and do not allow them to accumulate 6. Never leave food or water out for feral animals or wildlife 7. Bring livestock and fowl into barns, sheds or coyote-proof enclosures at night

8. Trim and clear vegetation that provides cover for coyotes or their prey.

9. Remove bird feeders. Coyotes are attracted to them.

10. Secure compost piles 11. Clean barbecues regularly 12. Build a coyote-proof perimeter fence When taking a pet dog for a walk in wild places, keep it close (on a leash preferably), and don't let it go exploring on its own in unknown places There has been a lot of science put into trying to understand and rectify the coyote's increasingly negative role in agriculture, wildlife management and domestic disturbances. Killing them has been an unfortunate "solution," but the coyote's response indicates that this is not the best approach. There are more coyotes living around us today, and they've migrated into areas no one ever thought they could, or would, such as downtown Los Angeles, Chicago and as far East as Boston and Bangor, Maine.

In the East, they've even cross-bred with the wolf and domestic dog to create a hybrid that's causing more havoc.

In any event, please take ODFW's suggestions to heart when near places where wild animals live. For serious problems with coyotes, it’s important not to take action on one’s own; ask for help from a professional by calling ODFW at 541388-6363. SW

Surely, you wouldn’t find the bunny-hugging vegan “shallow” for not being up for the long haul with the guy who electrocutes the cows.

The rational decision is clear: You don’t have what you need; you should move on. The problem is what the late Nobel Prize-winning cognitive scientist Herbert Simon deemed “bounded rationality.” This describes how our ability to make rational decisions is limited—by, for example, incomplete information about our alternatives, how much time we have to decide, or, as in your case, our emotions: dreading hurting somebody and feeling like kind of a pig for dumping a perfectly nice woman just because her sexual spirit animal is the paperweight.

Simon didn’t just point out the decision-making problem; he came up with a solution—his concept of “satisficing.”

This combo of “satisfy” and “suffice” means making a “good enough” choice—as opposed to incurring the costs of endlessly searching for the best choice. (Think of somebody who spends an hour looking for the primo parking space by the store entrance— in order to save time walking to and from their car.)

To decide what’s “good enough,” figure out the minimum stuff (good sex, etc.) that you absolutely must have to be satisfied in a relationship, and keep searching until you find somebody who has it. Forget about what you “should” need. If your life is not complete unless a woman will, say, wear a doorbell on each nipple, well, ring on, bro.

As for breaking up, this means telling somebody it’s over, not that their sexual technique is a ringer for hibernation.

Glue In The Dark Last week, I went out with a guy I met on a dating site. He was very attentive and affectionate, and he even texted me the next day. egal sales of so-called “recreational” cannabis have been ongoing in Oregon for only about eight months. Non-medicinal cannabis became legal on July 1, 2015, but sales through existing medical marijuana dispensaries did not begin until Oct. 1, 2015. Data from those initial sales are starting to become public, and show that Oregon’s new legal cannabis industry is fulfilling the promise of providing a boost to Oregon’s struggling economy.

Perhaps the best news of all is that the industry is generating jobs. According to the Oregon Cannabis Jobs Report, prepared by industry consultants, Oregon’s cannabis industry will create over 2,100 new jobs in 2016. Those jobs will pay $46 million in wages to Oregon workers. Most of the jobs are part-time positions with growers and retailers. Consequently, most of the jobs do not offer any benefits, such as health insurance.

According to the Oregon Employment Department, its statewide survey conducted last year revealed that the average medical marijuana dispensary worker earns approximately $12 an hour, or about $21,000 a year, which is about $2.25 above

the state’s minimum wage. The wages are in line with wages for all retail employees in the state, which are in the range of $20,000 to $30,000 per year, according to the Employment Department’s data.

With legalization, $46 million in wages now generate income tax revenue from employment in the legal market, which would otherwise be flowing through Oregon’s illegal cannabis trade Oregon’s cannabis industry is actually employment intensive. The Oregon Cannabis Jobs Report states that the cannabis industry employs about 50 percent more people than the alcohol industry in the state, even though retail alcohol sales greatly exceed retail cannabis sales.

Industry data are also providing a metric on how well the industry is competing with the black market. The website priceofweed.com allows cannabis consumers to enter purchase prices for cannabis, regardless of whether it was purchased legally or illegally. Priceofweed.com reports that Oregon enjoys the lowest cannabis price of all US states by a wide margin, with an ounce priced at approximately $181.
