CARAMELISED BANANA AND STRAWBERRY

Cool Down This Summer at SNOW ABU DHABI in Reem Mall

Looking for a new way to escape the scorching summer heat? Snow Abu Dhabi, the latest offering by Majid Al Futtaim in Abu Dhabi has got you covered.

The first of its kind in the Capital, Snow Abu Dhabi offers a completely different day out for the whole family.

Located in the heart of Reem Mall, Abu Dhabi’s signature retail, leisure, dining and entertainment destination, Snow Abu Dhabi covers a sprawling area of 9,732 sqm. Storytelling is integrated into the design with an Enchanted For-

est theme, which resembles a playful frost-covered world.

The highly anticipated destination features more than 20 rides and attractions such as the Crystal Carousel, Polar Express Train, Flight of the Snowy Owl, Snowflake Garden and Enchanted Tree, so guests can look forward to a whole host of snowy adventures such as sledding, carousels, zorbing and zip-lining throughout the year. Complementing the experience, Snow Abu Dhabi has three F&B outlets where guests can enjoy a wide variety of delicious snacks and dishes surrounded by real snow.

Inside scoop:

1. It is -4 degrees inside so a woolly hat and fleece gloves will definitely improve your experience unless you are a hardened snow traveller. Both are available for purchase onsite. Gloves start at AED 10 per pair for fleece and AED 50 for waterproof (with certain ticket categories) and woollen hats at AED 50 each from the gift shop.

2. You can buy hand warmers for AED 10 per set. These were a lifesaver so are highly recommended. Just open the plastic wrapping and expose the

The Source FAMILY 18

“pouches” to air. They will then gradually heat up on their own. Place one pouch into each glove to help keep your hands toasty warm. They stay heated for 8-plus hours.

3. Go early. The park gets busier as the day wears on so if you want to ride without queueing, get there when the park opens at 10am.

4. The Flight of the Snowy Owl ride (the zipline that runs from the top of the park) has the most waiting time, so make that your first stop when you get to the park, because as the day wears on the lines will get longer.

5. Take extra warm socks. You will be given a thin pair of socks along with your boots, but we recommend taking your own extra-warm socks to keep your feet comfortable throughout your visit. For those that don’t like feeling cold, a few layers of clothing to put under your jacket are also highly recommended.

6. Definitely have some hot chocolate at the outdoor Enchanted Cafe. We recommend stopping for a hot drink to make the day seem all the more authentic. You can warm your hands on the heaters placed at each table in the cafeteria as well.

7. Take a waterproof lanyard pouch for your phone. There are no pockets in your snowsuit apart from in the sleeves (which is tricky to manage in gloves). Pouches can be purchased for AED 10 on-site.

8. Snow Abu Dhabi has a good range of rides for all ages so it

The Source FAMILY 19

makes for an ideal family attraction. For the very little ones, there is the Crystal Carousel and Polar Express train ride located in the Snowflake Garden at the bottom of the park. There is also place to run and play in the open snow. The rest of the park has rides suited to varying ages with the fastest rides being located at the top of the park.

9. OPENING TIMES:

Sun - Thu : 10 am- 10 pm Fri - Sat : 10 am-midnight

10. AGES:

2 years and up. Children under 2 years are not allowed access to the park.

The National Aquarium at Al Qana

From the ocean depths to our shallow beaches, stretching from the North to the South Pole, many of the most fascinating attributes of jellyfish are still largely unknown.

This summer, visitors can find out more with the brand new ‘Invasion’ exhibition at The National Aquarium (TNA) at Al Qana, Abu Dhabi, which showcases mesmerising stinging sea nettles, UFO like moon jellies, upside down jellies that farm sunlight, and giant energetic blubbers that are the long distance travellers of the family. All different shapes and forms are displayed in specialised aquariums that keep them in permanent aquatic suspension.

This unique display is only made possible through the ex-

pert marine biologists working behind the scenes at TNA who have mastered the jellyfish life cycle within specialised breeding facilities.

The exhibition takes its name, Invasion, from a term often used when blooms of jellyfish appear suddenly and for no apparent reason. Science has discovered that this natural ‘surprise’ is indeed, all part of their master plan.

Jellyfish have a unique life cycle that includes a dormant phase when the plant-like creatures called ‘jellyfish polyps’ remain sediment on the seafloor. When something extreme happens in the ocean, such as a sudden temperature change, the polyps start firing out an army of clones. These genetically identical jellyfish clones, absent of brains and made of 98% water, swarm the beaches, often causing distress

among the public.

Paul Hamilton, General Manager and Curator for TNA said: “This exhibition is another step in the right direction for TNA which already exhibits the most diverse collection of animals in the region. Our guests are always surprised by the size of the facility, the length of the journey and the sheer number of animals they see along the way. Invasion of the Jellyfish is yet another world class attraction helping us meet the expectations of the Abu Dhabi public.”

The Invasion exhibition is held at The National Aquarium at Al Qana, Abu Dhabi and opens on Saturday 15th July 2023. More information can be found at

Oman, August 2023: Olive enthusiasts will rejoice at the second annual Al Jabal Al Akhdar Olive Harvest Festival coming to the Green Mountain this September. Following the success of the inaugural event in 2022, Anantara

Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort is delighted to once again present this celebration of the region’s bounty, in partnership with local olive farmers and olive oil producers.

Al Jabal Al Akhdar, also called the Green Mountain, is known as one of the most fertile areas of Oman. Its ancient falaj irrigation system and picturesque farms have helped roses bloom and the growth of pomegranates and apricots for hundreds of years.

Seeking to reap the benefits of this rich landscape, around ten years ago local farmers decided to plant olive trees. A triumphant harvest the following year rewarded their efforts, and ever since olive trees have delivered a fruitful crop annually.

The Olive Harvest Festival at

Anantara Al Jabal

Al Akhdar Resort will take place from 21 – 23 September 2023, providing guests with a daily schedule of events with olives as the main star. From cooking demonstrations to storytelling with a Local Guru, guests of all ages can enjoy a full programme. Guests can join in the olive harvesting – a fulfilling activity for the whole family. The harvest is a great way to work up an appetite before sampling the best olives in a variety of dishes made by the team of chefs at the resort.

There will also be the opportunity to visit the local olive oil factory where olives are pressed. Visitors can view the entire process of extracting the oil and preparing this healthy liquid, which provides both a fascinating and enjoyable experience for people of all ages.

Throughout the month of September, which is officially harvest season, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar will feature special dishes showcasing the local olives and olive oil at Bella Vista, its contemporary

Mediterranean restaurant located on the canyon edge with spectacular views. The menu will include delicacies such as seared cod with olive tapenade and ricotta-stuffed olives. Anantara Spa will also incorporate the super ingredient in a selection of its pampering therapies.

“At Anantara, we understand that our guests like to connect with the destination through immersive experiences. It is our pleasure to partner with local individuals and companies to highlight the wonders of Al Jabal Al Akhdar,” remarks Maren Kuehl, General Manager of Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort. “We are proud to offer our guests an opportunity to learn more about the region, its unique features and produce.”

Men’s health:

Mayo Clinic Healthcare expert shares key symptoms to act on

The Source FAMILY 34

As men age, even those accustomed to good health may encounter symptoms that affect their quality of life and are important to mention to their physicians. Vikas Mehta, MBCHb, a general medicine doctor at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in London, describes several physical signs that are worth following up on.

“For men, very often the symptoms that affect their lives are things that they are not very comfortable talking to others about,” says Dr. Mehta, a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists’ Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health. “Often, these conditions are treatable.”

For example:

Urological symptoms and sexual health:

• The need to urinate often can signal prostate or bladder problems and/or diabetes. Painful or otherwise difficult urination should also be followed up on.

• Erectile dysfunction, difficulty getting or maintaining an erection, is treatable and a good reason to have a cardiac screening, Dr. Mehta says: “If there are issues with blood vessels in one part of the body it’s very likely there are issues elsewhere.”

• A testicular exam to look for lumps is a good idea for men who have never had one. “We find sometimes in screening tests that men have never had anyone other than their partners look at their sexual organs, and so we pick up a lot of issues or abnormalities,” Dr. Mehta says.

Mental health:

• “Mental health for me is a big one” for men to pay attention to, says Dr. Mehta, noting that Mayo Clinic Healthcare is located in an area known for high-stress professions such as banking and law. “Knowing when and where to get help is very important.”

Musculoskeletal health:

• Is it taking longer to recover from injuries? A decrease in capacity for exercise is often related to musculoskeletal issues such as muscle wasting and inflammatory issues.

• Exercise can help relieve stress. For men accustomed to being active, not being able to run or engage in other exercise due to musculoskeletal conditions can affect mental health, Dr. Mehta says.

• Screening for osteoarthritis and rheumatic diseases such as gout, psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis may be called for, especially if there is a family history.

Respiratory health:

• If you find yourself becoming fatigued and/or out of breath when you are exercising or just walking around or you have a chronic cough, it is time to get screened, Dr. Mehta says: “Even if it’s just, `I wake up in the morning and I cough,’ it shouldn’t be happening every day.” Respiratory conditions such as adult-onset asthma and COVID-related problems are among the possibilities.

• Snoring and/or stopping breathing at times during the night can be a sign of sleep apnea and other respiratory problems. A lack of quality sleep is linked to several health problems such as higher blood pressure; increased appetite that can lead to diabetes and

weight gain; anxiety; and depression.

• “Snoring is a common reason for men to be kicked out of the bedroom by their partners, but the main sufferer is the person who has sleep apnea and is not getting quality sleep at night,” Dr. Mehta says. “They may think, `You know, I can sleep anytime,’ but they don’t realize that they’re not sleeping well at night and as a result can fall asleep just like that during the day.”

Ear, nose and throat health:

• Tinnitus—ringing and other noises in the ears—hearing better in one ear than the other, and ear pain are becoming more common as people work from home and use headphones, Dr. Mehta says.

• Men with chronic sore throats, especially smokers, and/or those with white lesions in their mouths should be checked for throat cancers. “It’s really important to get help in a timely manner if you have any of this,” Dr. Mehta says.

• Those with unexplained chronic congestion should be screened for nasal polyps. In some cases, a feeling that one nostril is harder to breathe out of than the other can be a symptom.

• A feeling of constantly needing to clear the throat or something caught in the throat can be a sign of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

Diabetes:

• Just as with frequent urination, often feeling thirsty means it may be time for diabetes screening.

• Heavy consumers of alcohol should also be screened, Dr. Mehta says.

Halal Food Giant ‘Al Islami Foods’ Introduces

As consumers increasingly prioritise their well-being, the demand for natural meat has gained significant traction. Al Islami Foods, renowned for its commitment to delivering premium culinary experiences, proudly offers meat with No added Hormones.

Discover why choosing traditionally produced meat with no added hormones goes beyond health considerations and how discerning families can indulge in premium food and enhance their lives by consuming meat as it should be.

When it comes to food with No added Hormones, what makes Al Islami’s ‘Real Halal’ meat special? Here’s why it is the right choice for families:

Animal Welfare: In a conventional market setting, animals are supplemented with hormones to help weight gain. Consequently, animals fed with unnatural additives are more likely to develop a

disease or illness, which can then be passed on to individuals. Meat with No added Hormones ensures the safety of folks while allowing animals to develop in harmony with nature rather than against it.

Mindful Tips 5

to Nurture Body and Mind

ABU DHABI 360 The Source FAMILY 38
FROM

Mindfulness, a cornerstone of Abu Dhabi 360, an emirate-wide wellness programme by Abu Dhabi Sports Council, has profound mental and physical health benefits. It reduces stress, enhances cognition, and fosters self-regulation. As a beneficial tool for mental conditions like anxiety and depression, it also contributes to physical health by lowering blood pressure, aiding sleep, and boosting immune function.

Recognising the interconnectedness of mental and physical health, Abu Dhabi 360 underlines the significance of mindfulness in fostering a balanced and healthy lifestyle and in collaboration with its third-party experts, has revealed practical and engaging self-care tips, to help focus on intertwining mindfulness exercises and nutrition to unlock the transformative power of selfcare.

Rola Ghaddar, an experienced Health Coach and Intuitive Eating Dietitian working with Abu Dhabi 360, emphasises, “Self-care isn’t a luxury, but a necessity. Even small changes can create a ripple effect, enhancing our daily life and long-term health.”

Dr. Mona Mobarak, a Certified Nutritionist working with Abu Dhabi 360, highlights the role of balanced nutrition in self-care. “Self-care isn’t about merely surviving but thriving. Consciously selecting nutrient-dense foods benefits our physical and mental health. Remember, self-care is a lifestyle and healthy eating is an integral part of that.”

Start the Day with Mindful Meditation:

Mindful meditation is a powerful practice that can significantly improve our overall wellbeing. Research has shown that regular meditation can reduce stress,

anxiety, and depression while promoting emotional resilience and cognitive function. We cultivate self-awareness when we begin our day with mindful meditation, finding a quiet space, closing our eyes, and focusing on our breath. This heightened awareness enables us to make conscious choices that support our wellbeing throughout the day. So, take a few moments each morning to meditate, and you’ll set a positive tone for the rest of your day.

Nourish Your Body with Wholesome Foods:

The food we consume is crucial to our physical and mental health. Opting for nourishing, whole foods provides essential nutrients that support our body’s functions and boost our mood.

Including a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in our diet can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve digestion, and enhance energy levels. When we eat mindfully, savouring each bite, we become more in tune with our body’s hunger and fullness cues, which can prevent overeating and support a healthier relationship with food.

Engage in Mindful Movement:

Physical activity is not only essential for our physical health but also contributes to our mental wellbeing. Engaging in mindful movement practices like yoga and tai chi allows us to connect deeply with our bodies, minds, and breath. Research suggests that yoga can reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and enhance overall fitness. Tai chi has been associated with improved balance, flexibility, and mental focus. By incorporating these mindful movement practices into our daily routine, we promote a sense of harmony and vitality in our lives.

Reconnect with Nature:

Spending time outdoors and immersing ourselves in nature’s beauty can have profound effects on our mental health and wellbeing. Research indicates that spending time in nature can reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. Nature has a restorative effect on our minds, helping us recharge and rejuvenate. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or simply sitting by a lake, being in nature allows us to disconnect from the fast-paced world and find solace in the present moment.

Cultivate Gratitude and Self-Compassion:

Practicing gratitude and self-compassion are powerful tools for nurturing emotional wellbeing and enhancing selfcare. Research shows that gratitude practices can increase positive emotions, improve relationships, and reduce stress. When we take time to reflect on the things we are grateful for, we shift our focus from what’s lacking to what we have, fostering a greater sense of contentment. Additionally, treating ourselves with kindness and understanding, just as we would with a loved one, helps build self-compassion. This self-compassion is crucial in times of failure or setbacks, promoting resilience and a more compassionate approach to self-care.

Incorporating these mindful selfcare tips into our lives can have a lasting impact on our wellbeing. Take a step towards prioritising your wellness and start a transformative self-care journey. For personalised workouts, including yoga and mindful exercises, explore the Abu Dhabi 360 app — your ideal companion in your self-care journey.

Zoo implements breeding programs for rare and endangered plants

Al Ain Zoo has implemented several programs to breed rare and endangered plants to sustain and preserve them, including planting about 214 Dwarf Palm trees, in different areas of the Zoo and propagation of the Carlumab by collecting its seeds.

The plants are characterized as slow-growing species, taking several months to germinate, which poses a challenge in their reproduction, in addition to the fact that they are found in rugged and scattered mountainous areas and the presence of significant threats that include animal grazing and habitat destruction due to urban sprawl.

Among its most essential and prominent achievements, the Zoo has established a seed bank specialized in collecting local plants known in the UAE and non-local environment to preserve different types of plants and sustain them for the future. The bank houses 40 varieties of seeds to meet the Zoo’s demand for plants, propagation in the nursery, and cultivation in its large areas, in addition to enhancing green garden spaces.

Al Ain Zoo seeks to raise awareness of sustainability and wildlife protection by implementing natural resource breeding programs and various initiatives to preserve wildlife.

Green for go: the UAE’s long-term plan for hydrogen

Green for go: the UAE’s long-term plan for hydrogen The Source FAMILY 44

The UAE has unveiled its national hydrogen strategy as analysts predict that GCC members can play a key role as exporters.

The blueprint for hydrogen is a “long-term plan to turn the UAE into a leading and reliable producer and supplier of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031”, according to Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, minister of energy and infrastructure.

It forms part of the updated national energy strategy, which was approved by the UAE cabinet in July. Al Mazrouei said the hydrogen plan would be “a crucial tool to help the UAE achieve its commitment to net zero by 2050″.

Sharif Al Olama, an under-secretary at the energy ministry, said the strategy included “tangible steps” to establish two hydrogen hubs and explore three more, which could create thousands of jobs.

Business consultancy Frost & Sullivan published a report in January, saying hydrogen “is expected to play a key role in decarbonising the economy across end-use sectors in the GCC.”

It added: “GCC countries, especially the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman, are working on national strategies aimed at developing the hydrogen market in the region and positioning themselves as fu-

ture hydrogen exporters.”

Stuart Bolton, an associate at law firm Watson Farley & Williams (Middle East), predicted last year that the UAE would “seek to play a similar role in hydrogen as it has established in oil and gas and will seek to capitalise on its strategic geography, mature energy infrastructure and established trading markets to be as influential in this sector”.

Bolton believes the Emirati government “sees hydrogen more as a means of economic diversification, rather than a central part of its domestic green energy transition plan, which will be primarily met by solar power.

The UAE will play an important role in exporting hydrogen to energy-hungry countries that lack the space or infrastructure.”

Oman, meanwhile, is on track to become the sixth-largest hydrogen exporter in the world and the largest in the Middle East by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency.

The sultanate aims to produce at least 1 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen a year by the end of the decade, up to 3.75 million tonnes by 2040 and up to 8.5 million tonnes by 2050.

Hydrom, a subsidiary of state-owned Energy Development Oman, signed

agreements worth $10 billion to develop two green hydrogen projects in June.

In Saudi Arabia, around $8.5 billion is being invested to build the world’s largest production facility for green hydrogen – hydrogen that is produced on a CO2-neutral basis through the electrolysis of water.

The Neom Green Hydrogen Project is being developed by Neom Green Hydrogen Company, a joint venture between Acwa Power, Air Products and Neom. It is expected that the plant will start producing green hydrogen from 100 percent renewable energy sources in 2026.

The global hydrogen production market was valued at $130 billion in 2021, according to the World Bank, and is estimated to grow by up to 9.2 per cent per year through 2030.

GCC members have several competitive advantages that could help them in the global green hydrogen economy, including their solar and wind resources, financial muscle and export networks.

While the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman are making significant moves, Qatar is continuing to focus on LNG and overseas production of blue hydrogen. Kuwait and Bahrain remain cautious and are sticking to investments and feasibility studies.

As children take a break from school, parents face the dilemma of keeping them engaged and entertained while also allowing them to unwind and relax. But what about the Summer Slide? Is it a genuine concern? There are two contrasting perspectives to explore. One suggests that what is learned remains stored for future retrieval, creating a solid foundation for continued growth. On the other hand, some argue that without regular rehearsal and practice, knowledge may fade away, leading to a potential setback when the new school year begins. As parents, it’s natural to feel a sense of responsibility to ensure our children’s educational progress is nurtured throughout the summer months. j

The Source FAMILY 48

Ingredients

• 3 sticks (339g) unsalted butter, softened 339 g unsalted butter, softened

• 3 cups (600g) sugar

• 5 large eggs, room temperature (you can warm them in a bowl of warm water if you are in a hurry)

• 3 cups (342g) cake flour (not self rising)

• ½ teaspoon (2g) baking powder

• ½ teaspoon salt

• Zest of 2 Lemons approximately 2 Tablespoons

• 2 ½ teaspoons Lemon Extract 10g- We used McCormick- See Notes Below

• 3 Tablespoons (42g) Lemon Juice (approximate amount of juice in one lemon)

• 1 cup (235g) Buttermilk

FOR THE LEMON GLAZE

• 2 cups powdered sugar sifted

• ½ teaspoon lemon extract you could also use lemon juice

• Pinch of salt

• Milk to reach desired consistency. (Start with 1-2 teaspoons and increase a teaspoon at a time. Ours was fairly thick because we used it with a stencil. But a thinner glaze can be piped as a drip, or drizzled over the cake.) GARNISH

Instructions

• Grease and flour a tube pan or bundt pan. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F

• In a separate bowl whisk the cake flour, salt, and baking powder for 30 seconds to combine. Set aside for later.

• Cream the softened butter with the paddle attachment in your mixer on medium speed until smooth. Gradually add the sugar and mix until lightened in color and fluffy 3 to 5 minutes.

• Add the eggs one at a time, mixing after each until the yellow of the yolk blends in.

• Add the buttermilk, lemon juice, lemon extract, and lemon zest to a measuring cup or bowl.

• With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk mixture. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. We do three additions of the flour mixture and two of the buttermilk mixture. Mix just until blended.

• Scoop/spoon the batter into a prepared tube pan. Use the back of a spoon to smooth over the top to level.

• Bake at 325 degrees for 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean (or with just a few crumbs attached.) Baking times can vary and so peek in as it approaches the 1 hour mark. If the top of the cake begins to get too dark, cover loosely with a piece of aluminum foil.

• This recipe makes approximately 8 cups of batter.

• Allow to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before turning out onto serving plate.

FOR THE EASY LEMON GLAZE

• Combine sugar, extract, and salt in a bowl and stir until smooth.

• Adjust consistency to your liking. If using a stencil, you’ll want a thicker (but spreadable) consistency that doesn’t run . If you are applying a drip or drizzle, it will be slightly softer (additional milk in small amounts).

HP announced new global research conducted by Morning Consult revealing the serious actions many parents are taking due to climate change, from everyday decisions to long-term family planning.

The study among parents in India, Mexico, Singapore, United Kingdom and United States found that 91% of parents are concerned about the climate crisis, leading to changes that are reshaping their lives and purchasing habits. More than half (53%) say it has impacted their perspective on having more children. Forty-three percent of respondents said they had reconsidered working for a company based on its commitment to environmental and social issues.

The research also found many parents favor companies that are taking action to address climate change. Nearly twothirds (64%) of parents prefer products that are sustainably sourced and 60% say sustainable company practices play a large part in their purchasing habits. That is despite the findings that the vast majority of parents (84%) acknowledge the cost of living is rising and more than half (57%) believe engaging in environmentally friendly practices takes up a lot of time.

“Families, like all our customers, rely on HP to connect them to the things that matter most, be it work, entertainment

or loved ones,” said Michele Malejki, Global Head of Social Impact. “It’s one of the reasons parents are top of mind for us. And like every generation before them, today’s parents have their own unique pressures, especially the climate crisis. It’s why we’re going beyond our business impact to make our business better for people and the planet.”

While parents are taking personal action, most also believe key players in the corporate world must act, too. Most parents (51%) believe that companies have “a lot” of responsibility in holding themselves accountable on climate action, as opposed to customers (36%).

“Our research correlates to what we see in our business: we are keeping customers, winning new sales, and attracting talent because of our Sustainable Impact initiatives and sustainable products,” said James McCall, Chief Sustainability Officer. “If we are serious about changing the trajectory of the climate crisis, industry must go beyond, changing the mindset of ‘do no harm’ to ‘do more good.’”

The findings come as HP releases its annual Sustainable Impact report for the twenty-second year. The report details the company’s progress toward comprehensive and bold environmen-

tal and social goals. HP has:

Reduced its absolute carbon footprint by 18% since 2019. This brings the company closer to its goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040 – end to end.

Reduced single-use plastic packaging by 55% compared to 2018.

Counteracted deforestation for 32% of all paper used in HP products and services toward goal of 100%.

Accelerated digital equity for more than 21 million people on path to 150 million by 2030.

Committed to building a pipeline of diverse talent, with 46% of U.S. new hires last year from racial or ethnic minorities.

HP aspires to be the most sustainable and just technology company. In 2021, HP set aggressive Sustainable Impact goals in three areas where the company believes it can make the most difference – Climate Action, Human Rights and Digital Equity. The 2022 report details progress toward all three focus areas including a net zero carbon value chain, giving back more to forests than we take, creating a more circular economy, building a culture of equality and empowerment, and accelerating digital equity around the world to enable traditionally excluded communities to thrive in a digital economy.

Open to all public, private and Charter schools in the emirate, “ADEK Awards” will celebrate and incentivize school achievements, innovation, and best practices while nurturing a continuous improvement cycle through healthy competition among schools.

Winners will receive recognition and cash prizes with a total value of over AED 6,000,000, with school award prize value spent towards the winning schools’ improvement initiatives.

“The ADEK Awards will recognize those of outstanding merit who contribute to building an education ecosystem which nurtures the next generation of lifelong learners,” explained Her Excellency Sara Awadh Issa Musallam, Minister of State for Early Education, Chairman of the Federal Agency of Early Education, and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge. “This new awards program will celebrate schools and individuals who improve and adopt best practices and help attain Abu Dhabi’s aspiration of a world-class education system where every student - regardless of their background

and learning needs - can realize their full potential and become active and productive global citizens.

“Realizing these aspirations would not be possible without the tremendous efforts of dedicated teachers, passionate educators, and tireless support staff who raise the bar every day in their commitment to support opportunities which improve the quality of learning and elevate education standards. These are the people we wish to recognize, and the awards will support the diversity of education initiatives, highlight the outstanding work of education professionals, and acknowledge their critical role as role models for the wider sector,” added HE Musallam.

The School Awards categories include 11 sub-categories; namely: the Best Parental Engagement Award, Best Inclusion Practice Award, Best Professional Development Program Award, Most Improved Award, Best Student Wellbeing Program Award, Best Literacy Program Award, and Best Arabic Program Award. The School Awards also recognize outstanding progress in four standardized assessments, with each category featuring different cycles and subjects.

On the other hand, the Indi-

vidual Awards will cover three sub-categories for the inaugural year, including Principal of the Year Award, Outstanding Teacher Award, and Unsung Hero Award.

ADEK has confirmed that the awards will be expanded in the future. “As the categories grow over time, we hope they continue to inspire the emergence of meaningful initiatives that further boost the quality of education provision and encourage educators to continue their strive to enhance learning experiences across our ecosystem,” HE Musallam said.

Next year’s editions will see the introduction of international assessment categories including the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), and Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS).

Submissions to the awards will open until 29 September 2023. An expert judging panel will assess each submission to verify its compliancy with the set criteria and standards, before announcing the winners in a special ceremony.
