Becoming a Heroine and Saving Myself from Toxic Masculinity Dr. Saliha Afridi, a clinical psychologist and the MD and Founder of The LightHouse Arabia
A heroine is defined as “a wom-
an admired for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” But what comes to your mind as you read “courage and outstanding achievements?” Is it a woman sitting at the table in a board room? Or is a woman who is sitting at the dinner table with her children and her family?
thinks of a woman who is comfortable in her power. No one thinks of ‘outstanding achievements’ as someone who is living a content life, tending to herself with full attention and care. No one thinks of someone who is a good and kind human being to herself and others. No woman or man is named or awarded for those achievements.
If we are all honest with ourselves, our first thoughts when we hear ‘outstanding achievements’ are college degrees, climbing the corporate ladder, sitting in the decision making seats or leading a business to success. No one

cies, what biases exist in the workplace culture, how to attain gender parity and gender balance, and what helps and what hurts women in the workplace. And that is an important conversation that we need to keep having until women are not seen as less than. But I believe that there is another, if not more important conversation. Not about gender balance in the workplace, but about how if we unconsciously solve for “gender balance” in a world where success is defined by patriarchal values and toxic masculinity—it will never yield a balanced woman (or man).
What does it mean to be a ‘balanced’ woman?
I believe all men and women have opposite energies or forces inside of us. Some cultures call it masculine and feminine, others might refer to it as ying and yang, rationality and emotionality, testosterone and estrogen, animus and anima, extraversion and extroversion. For the sake of simplicity I will call it masculine and feminine energy. The masculine energy in all of us is directive, focused, achieving, planning, confident, goal-oriented and driven, whereas the feminine energy in all of us is receptive, fluid, allowing, feeling, empathetic, vulnerable and creative. The masculine energy is identified as the doing mode, and the feminine energy as the being mode. The masculine energy is concerned with the logical mind and the external world, whereas the feminine is the intuitive mind and internal world. When these two sets of energies are balanced in men and women, we experience a greater sense of harmony and fulfillment. When they’re misaligned, we feel more friction and stress in everyday life. We feel disease. Every man and woman has these two energies, and two sets of inherent gifts but what patriarchal society has done and continues to do is compartmentalize the woman and man within the narrowly defined, socially prescribed gender roles which highlight their strengths that fit within the patriarchal system. The result is one dimensional and toxic masculinity and a shallow definition of femininity.
My Story of being an alpha-female making it in a man’s world
Growing up in a world that not only had patriarchal values but values of machismo, I quickly realized that if I wanted position or prestige or independence, I would need to be a man. So I set on my path. Being a sensitive child, I learned to deny my emotions starting early on, because boys don’t cry. When my body started to show outward signs of change and womanhood, I unconsciously and violently rejected it and eliminated any sign of my femininity by developing an eating disorder which starved the girl in me. This eating disorder would be my companion into young adulthood. I separated from most activities that were societally prescribed as feminine like cooking, domestic tasks or wearing dresses even though they were appealing to me. I rejected my mother’s methods and her wishes for me as I measured my worth and my success by patriarchal values. I abandoned my feminine, playful nature, and I dismissed and disconnected from my body, my feelings, my creativity, as I identified with my logical mind, my goals, my achievements. I became an alpha-female, and someone who could run with the boys (I literally ran with the boys track team in high school).Every now and then my cousins would remind me that I am a girl and I should not act stronger than men because ‘no man likes that.’ The people watching my success said “wait till she becomes a mother—it isn’t easy studying/working and being a mother”—so I showed them. I got married and had children but to acknowledge the limitations of my physical body during pregnancy or childbirth would be a weakness. So I worked up to the day of my baby’s delivery, drive myself to the hospital, give a scheduled birth, take the weekend to recover and be back to work/or university
the following week. I did this for all four children. People referred to me as ‘bionic woman’ because the normal human needs just did not seem to apply to me. Little did they know that I was burning the candle at both ends, which resulted in me wearing out my mind and body to the point of burn-out three times over the course of a decade. Now, as I think back at this time, I am full of grief for the time lost, memories not made, for not being more engaged or playful in my youth and in the early years of my children’s lives. Fast forward to a few years ago, while sitting amongst my family, one of my uncles said “Saliha is more man than any man I know.” I couldn’t believe it. Suddenly I felt a huge sense of relief …I did it… I showed them I was as good as a man…I showed them I can do what men can do…but as soon as I exhaled, a voice inside me said “but wait…you’re not a man. You are a woman.” And it hit me like a bolt of lightning, with the thunder of realizations that rumbled inside for weeks after. I had done it. I had achieved “success” from an external, male-dominated perspective. I had many “outstanding achievements.” I had the home, the established business, financial independence, and I did it while studying and having kids and caring for the home—but at what cost? My success suddenly felt shallow. I realized I had fallen for the biggest conspiracy against women— Here I thought I was being a feminist and showing the patriarchal world women were ‘just as strong as men,’ but I did it while I was denying the feminine parts of me, silencing those parts of me, even betraying those parts of me just so I could be to be taken seriously in a world where the metrics for success were defined by patriarchy.

The truth is that the ambition of a woman to be like a man is a waste of her potential.
•
Connect to your body – Most, if not every woman, struggles with having a skewed relationship with their body. This should come as no surprise given that from the time we are born we are inundated with messages about our bodies and so we learn to deny, starve, dissociate, abuse, hate our bodies. We are also told ‘mind over matter’ or ‘no pain no gain’ and so we learn to dismiss our bodies which are our home and the keepers of our intuition and wisdom. It’s time to make a commitment to start rebuilding a relationship with your body again. Activities like breathwork, body scans, yoga, stretching, dancing, horse riding, can all start to reconnect you to your body again.
•
Build your tribe and include men in your tribe- No woman can do it alone. There is no such thing as a fiercely independent leader so it is important for you to consider who is on your ‘Board of Advisors’ as well as who is in your personal tribe. And as you are considering these individuals, make sure to include some men in these groups. The path for reaching our full potential need not be through radical sisterhood or girl power but rather an interdependence between men and women. We have a lot to teach each other.
•
Manage your time and energy- You will need time, energy, space and stillness to reconnect with the parts of you that have been denied. Start with doing a self-assessment of what ‘balance’ looks like for you (not your friend, sister, or colleague or partner) and then start to make hard choices that are
No, a woman is not as good as a man. If she stands in her full power as a whole and balanced woman she would be a force like the world has not seen before.
Saving Myself & Becoming My Own Heroine More recently I made a commitment to myself. I decided to embrace the masculine parts of me that I had developed throughout my life, and give voice to the feminine parts of me that I had dismissed my whole life. I have spent the last few years honoring and reclaiming those parts of myself.
Here are a few ways to start moving towards a balanced self - a whole woman: •
14
Ask yourself what you want – Most of us don’t know what we want and no one really asked us. There are so many messages we get from our culture and our family about what we should be and behave that to connect to our true self is like finding the holy grail. So I ask you to ask yourself, who would I be if my family didn’t tell me what I should do or how to be or if I weren’t polluted by the noise of social media putting constant pressure on me to change myself or improve myself? What would I do if no one would judge me and I was not afraid to fail? What would my best life look like? Does it have a romantic relationship? Does it have kids? Does it have me traveling the world freely? Does it have me working and raising a family alongside? What do I want? The Source FAMILY
consistent with your definition. If you say yes to something, what are you saying no to? You will find that as you get closer to your authentic self you will need to make tough decisions and decide between doing what you love and doing what you love more. It is the only way to achieve balance and give voice to all parts of yourself. Also, as you consider your energy, make a commitment to not rush through your days. Find ways to calm yourself throughout the day and refuel often and everyday so you do not burnout from caregiving or work. Leave a few minutes of stillness between activities, breathe for 5 minutes every few hours, or go for a 10 min walk in nature during your lunch break.
•
Cultivate ‘tender and fierce’ self-compassion- The way back towards wholeness is through compassion. Compassion means to feel the pain of someone and be activated to alleviate their suffering. Self-compassion is asking yourself “what do I need to alleviate my suffering or comfort my pain right now?” And in the words of Dr. Kristin Neff, we need to cultivate ‘tender and fierce’ self-compassion, which means we soothe and comfort ourselves as well as protect ourselves fiercely. This can look different on different days and at different times in our lives, but one thing remains the same, choosing to be with yourself in an accepting and gentle way.

What do you do with a
very large derelict building that was built on the original pitch of the Al Ain Amblers? For the Executive Principal of Al Ain English Speaking School, this was an easy question to answer! “ “Naturally you convert it into a radio and TV studio, with two Apple Mac Suites, an Engineering Design Technology workshop, with an additional Home Economics Suite; don’t forget you add an automobile garage plus a falconry unit”! Andrew Thomas, replies. The building in question is a huge two storey building that once housed over 20 teaching staff on the school site. Following the completion of two brand new off-site blocks of flats several years ago, the old school building was left empty with Thomas’ eye firmly fixed on it! “We wanted to offer something different here at AAESS, and enrich both the curriculum during and after school. We are excited that the falconry unit will bring more local tradition to the school as well as teach our students husbandry of these magnificent creatures. This will very much be something that we will offer the students to get involved with before, during and after school. The radio and TV studio will allow us to offer Media Studies at GCSE and A

Level in the coming academic year (2022-2023), as well as offer students the chance to produce and broadcast to their peers as part of our Extra Curriculum Activity (ECA) programme”. Thomas goes on to explain, “The garage will be very much part of the ECA programme, where we will teach students basic mechanics, but also look to build and learn about sand buggies and 4x4s! We will also be working closely with the Engineering team, where we will become involved in the F1 in Schools competition at a senior level. In addition, we have had offers of master classes from the Ayla, Rotana and Golf Club executive chefs too”. Thomas concluded with, “I am very excited about this new STEAM (Science, Engineering, Arts and Media) Centre. It will be something completely different and will offer something quite unique for our children, parents and staff alike.” The centre is due to be completed in the next couple of months and we cannot wait to see the finished article!

However, there are big plans ahead for the Home Economics suite, which has a fully fitted stainless steel kitchen, with 12 ovens, offering 24 cooking stations. “We will be looking to run some very exciting ECAs from the kitchen, and I am looking forward to starting an annual ‘bakeoff’ competition here at the school for the students. But it will not end there, as I see a parent bake-off in the foreseeable future, alongside many culinary workshops. Pantomime fever in Al Ain a sensational performance by local theater group Lakmee Senadheera
A huge congratulations to the
cast of Hansel and Gretel who performed their full-scale community production to an eager audience at the Zayed Central Library auditorium. On the 12th of May, the young actors took to the stage to perform the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel (with a slightly modern twist) where the brother and sister are given away by their stepmother to the wicked witch in the woods but finally to be rescued by Goodelia, the good witch, a handsome prince and all their friends. In true pantomime (panto) style, the cast of Hansel and Gretel treated the enthusiastic multicultural audience to everything you might

expect in a panto production: plenty of audience interaction with the characters on stage, popular pop chart hits to sing along to, slapstick comedy and witty lines suitable for the whole family. Judging by the audience’s reaction, the performers kept everyone in the audience laughing and entertained for the full 60 minutes of the production. This group of young performers from various schools in Al Ain came together, once a week for two terms to learn about character analysis, stage movement, comedy timing, choreography, voice training and much more under the direction of Louise Ryan at La Dolce Vita, Arts Learning Center in Al Ain. Louise Ryan hails from Cornwall in the United Kingdom and has lived in Abu
Dhabi emirate for a number of years. After early choral, music theory and vocal training, she started her journey to become an opera singer. A successful concert and operatic soprano in her home country, she now enjoys performing to an international audience here in the UAE. She has performed on numerous occasions with the UAE National Symphony Orchestra and Al Khubairat community choir in Abu Dhabi. Most recently Louise performed at the prestigious Dubai Opera House, where she delighted the audience with a breathtaking song composed by Emirati composer, Hamad Altaee. When not preparing for concerts, her passion is to pass on all that she knows about the art of singing and drama,
either individually or through group exposure to performing in public is instrumental in the development of young people, either to encourage public speaking skills or to instill a passion to perform in the theatre. More about Louise, https://louise-ryan.com/about-louise-ryan

FAMILY ADVICE
Travelling With Larger Families Suman Manning
Mum of triplets and founder of TwinsPlus Arabia, the UAE’s only support network for multiple parents.
www.twinsplusarabia.com/community 22
The Source FAMILY
As a parent with a larger family,
the idea of travelling any further than the school or playdate run might fill you with serious ‘Home Alone’ flashbacks. It can be enough to send you scrolling for the perfect ‘staycay’ options within an hour of home, and let’s face it, in the UAE we have some amazing options. But there are times when a longer haul trip is either necessary - to visit our home countries for example, or simply just wanted, and however much we may dream of child free vacations, this often isn’t either possible, practical or on the cards. Travelling with larger families can feel like a logistical nightmare, but it can be as stress-free as you want to make it, or your kids allow! As a mum of triplets, now aged 12, and as a family with different ‘home bases’ we’ve had plenty of experience travelling away from the UAE as a family of five. From the baby and toddler years through to the pre-teens and we are not alone. Parents of multiples (twins, triplets and more) or simply just those families with a larger than average brood can enjoy trips and holidays abroad as much as a smaller family can, with some careful planning and tips from those who have done it! Whether your concerns might be around cost, safety, food, equipment, space, or even your sanity, there are ways to ensure that none of you miss out on what should be a magical, memory making time for you all this summer, and not the obstacle course you may picture it as!
Travel light.. The irony, I know! Even solo travellers will tell you that they often travel with so much ‘stuff’ they just don’t need. Travelling light should also extend to your pre-trip planning. You might not have any choice
as to where your trip is taking you all, but if you do - it’s important to make life as easy for yourselves as you possibly can. Multi-trip style itineraries mean multiple accommodation bookings, multiple transport options, the list is endless. Whilst you can absolutely enjoy a brilliant holiday as a large family as much as the next person, don’t make your trip any more difficult for yourselves than you need to. If your children are young, they only need a certain type of stimulation, and ultimately just quality time with you. Save the adventure for when they are old enough to appreciate it. There is nothing quite like having your own ‘gang’ with you on holiday as the kids grow, and whilst costs may rise along with them, the fun just increases, trust me! Travelling light can also include booking yourselves into an airBnB style property instead of a hotel. For some families a ‘home’ style stay helps keep things familiar, often gives you far more space than you will have in a hotel room, and gives you potentially more private outdoor space in a garden or courtyard but also the benefit of ‘self catering’. Now, this might be exactly what you are trying to avoid on our vacations - but nobody has ever said holidays with kids were easy - however many you have! The ability to prepare food as and when you need it, not be confined by restaurant opening or meal times can be a real bonus. Full properties will also come with laundry facilities too - again, something you are trying to avoid, but believe us, you’ll need them! Whilst large or conjoining hotel suites and rooms are available - larger single properties give you all more space and privacy. No more sitting in a dark hotel room whilst babies sleep and you don’t want to wake them!
What to take? If you’ve gone down the rental property route, you will NOT have to take the kitchen sink, but you may still feel like you have to! Make a list - what are your family’s absolute must have essentials? - the things and quantity that you absolutely cannot manage without? There are rental services in most modern towns and resorts that are popular with tourists, and you will be able to hire almost anything equipment wise to meet you at your destination. If it doesn’t have to be ‘yours’ - saving space and a few less things to think about. You can of course even order shopping - groceries and toiletries for example to meet you at your destination if you are self catering. Take advantage of anything you can in this regard and make your packing woes lighter. When we travelled to Australia and India, we asked local friends to lend us essentials such as strollers, toys and books etc so the kids had ‘new’ things but we also didn’t need to carry them back and forth. u
If you are staying in a hotel - always make sure you are taking, or hire a travel cot or ‘playpen’ - even if it is not used in lieu of a bed, it means you always have a ‘safe space’ to keep them yes, ‘penned in’ but that’s the point - hotel rooms can be toddler unfriendly from a safety point of view, and you can’t always keep your eyes on them.

Many hands…
When Flying
Transport
Now, the last thing you will be considering is taking ‘more’ people with you, but more people (over a certain age) means more help! Multi-family holidays are great for larger families because of this - more children mean instant playmates for yours. More adults mean more help for everyone, the more hands and eyes the better, plus a respite for the grown ups to have the companionship - all in it together, right?
One of the biggest concerns amongst our parents within TwinsPlus Arabia is always ‘how will we manage the flight?’ Plane cabins can feel claustrophobic at the best of times, let alone with multiple wriggling, bored or tantruming children. Like most things, it can all be in the pre-planning, but it’s important to note how important your own mind set is here also.
Another popular ‘headache’ lots of people means lots of luggage. How do you all get to the airport? What about car seats? The best advice I can give from personal experience is to utilise a ‘Safer Driver’ service. This means that you can get to the airport in our own car, and it will be delivered back to collect you after your return journey - with your own car seats so no taking in or out.
You can share certain expenses, cooking duties, babysitting and more. Keeping it in the family is always great too - singletons may never want to holiday with their parents again - until they have children themselves of course! It’s likely that at home you will have help, consider taking your home help with you - this of course can come with visa headaches for specific nationalities and countries, but worth looking into, the cost can be worth it for the familiarity, peace of mind and the help!
“We have 6 children including twins and a child who is autistic and nonverbal. We’ve done 6 weeks in the UK and Ireland when the twins were 4 months old, that was an experience! We’ve also been to New Zealand, Thailand, Greece and France (after the twins were born, they are now five years old). This year we are going to Santorini and Crete but we’re taking our nanny for the first time, mainly due to 1:1 care that my son with autism requires.” Angela Commane 24
The Source FAMILY
Nobody ‘loves’ a screaming child on a flight, but really, it’s part of life and most other passengers have ‘been there’ too - it’s important we keep a cool head as parents and don’t worry about anyone else. That said, I have a few fail safe tips for when I have travelled with my triplets. This is not a time to worry about ‘screen time’ - take full advantage of any in flight/back of seat entertainment options. Make sure your kids are comfortable - if this means a familiar blanket, pillow or such take them. Tablets, if your kids are old enough to have them, can be preloaded with games and their favourite shows so no arguments there - let them watch away. In this instance, it’s all about the destination *not* the journey! A good thing to prepare is a number of small, easy to carry activities, toys or books, the smaller the better and as many as you sensibly can. Producing something ‘new’ at various times during the trip will keep them happy, and of course snacks too! Do not be reliant on airline meal routines to keep your kids fed and happy! Cabin staff will always be happy to help you at any point, do not be afraid to ask! From helping with seatbelts, luggage, mealtime logistics and even to walk a bored toddler up and down the cabin - it is what they are there for and almost always happy to oblige.
Remember, if you need a hire car at your destination - you can hire the seats extra. If you cannot do this - You can book multiple taxis or a minibus option and again, with pre-planning, ensure that you have enough car seats included, but remember, this level of transport requires research and pre-planning for your convenience and safety.
We had two ride on carry on chairs for our twins amazing! I managed to do a 40 min transit in London Gatwick including changing terminals on my own with them! These are carry-on case size, on wheels, but with a seat attachment that folds down. You can sometimes find these on marketplace sites or eBay. Fresh and modern, the decor gives off a traditional casual steakhouse vibe. The comfortable booths located around the edge of the venue allow for a more intimate and private setting, so even when the restaurant is crowded, diners still have privacy. The menu options have been carefully crafted to offer just enough variety to satisfy everyone, while not being fussy or pretentious. A MUST TRY is the Wagu Spaghetti. No, there is no pasta in sight, instead, you get a pile of deliciously tender thinly sliced Wagu Beef Ribeye served with a side of moreish crispy golden potato cubes. The added bonus is that it comes with an extremely reasonable price point of only AED 110.00. This dish will definitely be a regular on our future visits. For those with a bigger appetite, or maybe friends willing to share their fare, the t-bone is a rare find in Al Ain. Flame-grilled to perfection the monster cut comes served with two sauces, mash and veg for AED 249.00. If it’s a light snack you are after, the generous portion of dynamite shrimp at AED 40-00 also gets 5 stars from us. To compliment your meal, there is a range of deliciously refreshing mocktails available. I must confess, I would go just for the passion fruit mojito, it is that good. HOW WORRIED SHOULD WE BE? CORNERSTONE CLINIC Dr. Ruhil Badiani MBBS, BSc RadSci, MRCGP, DRCOG
Dr Ruhil Badiani weighs in on the facts and the fiction surrounding this new challenge to put our minds at ease.
Is there a real danger from monkeypox? Monkeypox is not an unknown virus, unlike Covid-19, the first case in a human was seen in 1970. Currently, there is no need to worry, it is a very difficult virus to catch and one study
30
The Source FAMILY
(Bull World Health Organ. 1988; 66(4): 465–470.) shows that only 3% of close contacts will become infected. However, this is an unusual and unprecedented monkeypox outbreak. It has taken scientists who specialise in the disease by complete surprise and it is always a concern when a virus changes its behaviour and so we need to monitor the situation. The WHO have said that this is a containable situation, and we can stop the human-human transmission. It warned there was an urgent need to raise awareness and improve care, isolation and contact tracing for confirmed cases – but stressed there was no cause for panic.
Are we vaccinated or can we get vaccinated? We are not vaccinated but there is currently one vaccine available. Unlike Covid , Monkey Pox is not easily as contagious and no government is on alert to vaccinate their population as present. There is a Danish company that has the vaccine called Jynneos and the FDA approved it in 2019.
How easy is it to catch? Monkeypox does not spread easily between people. Spread of monkeypox may occur when a person comes into
HEALTH close contact with an infected animal (rodents are believed to be the primary animal reservoir for transmission to humans), human, or materials contaminated with the virus. The virus enters the body through broken skin (even if not visible), the respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). Person-to-person spread is uncommon, but may occur through: • contact with clothing or linens (such as bedding or towels) used by an infected person • direct contact with monkeypox skin lesions or scabs • coughing or sneezing of an individual with a monkeypox ras
What are the symptoms?
If you get infected with monkeypox, it usually takes between 5 and 21 days for the first symptoms to appear. The first symptoms of monkeypox include: • a high temperature • a headache • muscle aches • backache
• • • •
swollen glands shivering (chills) exhaustion A rash usually appears 1 to 5 days after the first symptoms. The rash often begins on the face, then spreads to other parts of the body.
How long does it last and will there be any scars from the lesions?
The symptoms usually clear up in 2 to 4 weeks. The rash is sometimes confused with chickenpox. It starts as raised spots, which turn into small blisters filled with fluid. These blisters eventually form scabs which later fall off. The scares would depend on the healing process of your skin type but in most cases they would leave marks.
What are the treatments if any that are available? There’s currently no proven, safe treatment available for monkeypox. Antiviral drugs may help, but they haven’t been studied as a treatment for monkeypox. Instead, your healthcare provider will monitor your condition and try to
relieve your symptoms. Most people get better on their own without treatment. So far there have been no deaths from this Monkeypox outbreak. Mortality has been estimated to be 1 to 10 percent, depending on the strain. Thankfully, the strain identified in the UK cases has been associated with a lower mortality rate, about one percent. It is important to note, this mortality rate is based on the cases seen in Western and Central Africa where the healthcare is not optimal.
Does it really come from monkeys? In 1958, the first cases were discovered amongst a colony of monkeys, hence the name ‘monkey pox’ but it is not necessarily derived from the monkeys themselves.
Should I be worried about sending my kids to school now that there is a case in UAE? Certainly not. As mentioned above it is not contagious or easily spread between people.

Major Retail Outlets in Abu Dhabi to Support Implementation of
Single-Use Plastics Policy
A group of senior executives from major retail outlets in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi recently signed a voluntary declaration, committing them to support the implementation of the Abu Dhabi Single-Use Plastic Policy. The policy was launched by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) in March 2020, which, along with subsequent regulations, will help the Emirate’s marine and land environment remain free from single-use plastic waste. Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary Gen32

eral of EAD and Ahmed Tarish Al Qubaisi, Director of Control and Inspection Department from Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (DED), were present at Al Mamoura Building to witness the signing of the declaration by executives from major retail outlets in Abu Dhabi. The leading brands included: Abu Dhabi Co-operative Society and Spar, Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarket, Choithrams, Spinneys and Waitrose. The signatories expressed their commitment in not only implementing the policy, but also collecting fees on reusable bags in a bid to reduce their consumption.
The signing of the declaration supports efforts made by EAD to implement the integrated single-use plastics policy and will help achieve the UAE government’s vision of promoting sustainable living. The policy includes a gradual reduction in the consumption of single-use plastic products across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, as well as promotes the use of reusable products. According to the latest announcement by EAD, single-use plastic bags will be banned in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as of June 1, 2022.
The announcement signed by the major retail outlet companies in Abu Dhabi, recognises the effects related to single-use plastic waste on marine, wild species and birds that perish due to the presence of plastic materials. Furthermore, the human food chain is affected due to the entry of plastic particles, leading to accompanying health effects. Her Excellency Dr. Al Dhaheri said: “By working with our partners, we seek to implement this policy and a number of measures to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic products and transition towards reusable materials. In the near future, there will be a gradual reduction of single-use and disposable plastic products and we will push for the promotion of multi-use products.” Her Excellency added: “The
amount of single-use plastic constitutes 36% of the global plastic production total, which is around 400 million tons annually. In the UAE, for example, 11 billion plastic
bags are consumed annually (according to a report presented at the World Government Summit in February 2019).
This is equivalent to 1,182 plastic bags per person annually. This is considered a very high rate compared to the global average of 307 bags per person annually.” Her Excellency elaborated: “The declaration today emphasises the importance of joint action between all concerned parties from the government and private sectors to address the challenges related to single-use plastics, and their impact on the environment.” Her Excellency praised the outlets that signed the pledge, adding it reflects their environmental sense of responsibility and their leadership role in driving positive change in consumption patterns. She further stressed that the declaration is in line with the Abu Dhabi Government’s vision and its endeav-
ours to promote the responsible use of plastic, while transitioning to more sustainable alternatives. Based on this direction, EAD calls on all other retail outlets to join this pledge to better promote sustainable development and protect the environment in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Abdulmajeed Alkhoori, CEO of ADCOOPS said: “Since opening our first store in 1981 on the Corniche, in the heart of Abu Dhabi, we have maintained a strong sense of social responsibility and are fully committed to the declaration to reduce reliance on single-use plastic. Abu Dhabi Co-operative Society are committed to removing single use plastic from our outlets and across our business, and we proudly support the vision of our leadership to protect the natural beauty and environment of the United Arab Emirates. This initiative to remove single-use plastic will be a big win for the health of our oceans, wadis and deserts. As a community retailer we will exert effort to help our customers to make the change towards a more sustainable and a greener future”. Ibrahim Al Zubi, Chief Sustainability Officer at Majid Al Futtaim Holding, commented: “Carrefour was the first UAE retailer to introduce reusable bags back in 2007 through its iconic starfish bag. The launch was followed by a robust sustainability campaign to raise awareness and encourage sustainable shopping behaviour that ran until this day. As an Emirati company, we have a commitment to protect and save our community, which is the reason we grew our sustainability operations exponentially over the past few years and pledged to eliminating single use plastic and becoming Net Positive in carbon and water by 2040. Today, by joining hands with our government and the wider industry, we are one step closer to a greener UAE. I would like to thank the Abu Dhabi authorities for The Source FAMILY 33

leading the way to a better, plastic-free future.” The CEO of Choithrams, Rajiv Warrier said “At Choithrams, we are devoted to bringing the “Full of Goodness” promise at every step of the customer journey while taking care of the communities we serve. We welcome the decision taken by the Abu Dhabi authorities to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags. Choithrams has been actively encouraging use of reusable shopping bags for years now. Our multi use ‘Bag for life’ is available for purchase at all Choithrams stores, these bags come with a lifetime guarantee and can be replaced if damaged. The signatories confirmed their commitment to implement the Abu Dhabi Government ban on single-use plastic bags, as of June 1, 2022, and to charge customers a fee for each reusable plastic grocery bag. The signatories also committed to using collected fees to implement sustainable initiatives and publish reports on how these funds are spent. This is in addition to contributing to the government’s efforts – represented by EAD – in raising awareness related to reducing reliance on single-use plastic products.
Saifee Rupawala, CEO of Lulu Group International: “This landmark initiative is going to be a major game-changer in the fight against the negative impact of plastic on our precious environment and Lulu Group is fully committed to make “Abu Dhabi Single-Use Plastic Policy” a grand success. We have already launched a major awareness campaign throughout all our hypermarkets and in social media to achieve an impactful result from day one itself. In our second phase we will be implementing many innovative projects to further promote Re-usable shopping bags and various sustainability initiatives.” The CEO of Fine Fare Food, Sunil Kumar, who runs both the Spinneys & Waitrose brands said: “As a retailer established in the region for more than sixty years ago, we have a great responsibility to help protect our local environment and eco-systems. We view the Abu Dhabi Single-Use Plastic Policy as a significant step forward that accelerates the UAE towards a cleaner, healthier future.” According to the declaration, the signatories have committed to cooperate, secure alternatives, resources, and financing to support environmental protection. This is in addition to reducing the amount of single-use plastic materials in their outlets in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and to raise awareness to encourage and accelerate the shift in consumer behaviour towards reducing dependence on the consumption of sinThe Source FAMILY 35

Abu Dhabi PLASTIC BAN UNDERSTANDING MORE ABOUT WHAT IT IS CURRENTLY AND WHAT IT WILL INCLUDE MOVING FORWARD
36
The Source FAMILY
As part of the UAE’s vision to
enhance sustainable living in Abu Dhabi, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced today that its ban on the use of single-use plastic bags will be effective from June 2022, based on its integrated single-use plastic policy that was introduced in 2020. Through the implementation of the region’s first integrated policy, the Agency plans to gradually reduce the amount of single-use plastic products consumed across Abu Dhabi, and encourage the use of reusable products. In this context, EAD is planning to implement measures to reduce demand for about 16 single-use plastic products that include cups, stirrers, lids and cutlery. Additionally, EAD is also heading towards phasing out single-use styrofoam cups, plates and food containers by 2024. The comprehensive policy has been developed to promote a healthy environment and a sustainable lifestyle for all, and to combat climate change by reducing resource consumption and associated pollution. Since the launch of the policy in March 2020, the Agency has coordinated extensively with its strategic partners concerned with implementing the policy, especially plastics producers and retailers, to ensure effective implementation, as new technical standards for multi-use bags have been set. In support of this drive, a large-
scale awareness campaign will be carried out across the emirate to educate the public on the new procedures, helping to activate the ban on single-use plastic bags from June. Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said: “By launching and implementing the integrated single-use plastic policy, EAD seeks to continue the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed, whose deep passion for preserving the environment inspires us in our sustainability journey. We are extremely eager to continue on our path of reducing the consumption of single-use plastics in Abu Dhabi.” She added: “As part of our plan to completely curb the use of single-use plastics, we are encouraging Abu Dhabi citizens to use more multipurpose and re-usable materials to reduce their environmental footprint. Today, we are introducing a ban on single-use plastic bags in the capital in light of their harmful impacts on the environment and biodiversity.” She elaborated: “We have taken great strides toward realising the policy’s targets, and have built the regulatory framework to ensure the policy’s successful implementation. With the support of the UAE government and close collaboration with our stakeholders, we are on the
right track towards success.” In the context of implementing the integrated single-use plastic policy, EAD has organised clean up events and awareness campaigns encouraging community members to play a role in protecting the environment while educating people on the damage done by the amounts of single-use plastics and litter and their impact on beaches and marine habitats. The Agency is also targeting private sector companies, providing them with tools to effectively plan for the policy’s implementation. The Agency has re-engineered its internal procedures to implement the policy and reduce the use of single-use plastics within its scope. Several agency partners from the government sector have also implemented initiatives to support the policy, while many restaurants are also launching initiatives to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics, and some major retailers are encouraging shoppers to use reusable shopping bags. Furthermore, EAD is conducting a detailed and holistic study for the introduction of an incentive-based, single-use plastic water bottle return scheme in Abu Dhabi, in partnership with more than 30 private and public entities. How to Protect
Your Skin from the Harmful Effects of Ultraviolet Rays
Dr Ramsha Riaz - Cosmetic Dermatology Physician at Zoya Health and Wellbeing Resort
The sun’s Ultraviolet (UV) rays
have been very well known to have harmful effects on the skin. Even though we cannot see these dangerous rays with our naked eyes, they do breakdown the fibers that give our skin its elasticity. This leaves our skin prone to easily bruising, sagging and premature aging. The freckles and sunspots that we develop over time also increases the risk of skin cancer. Therefore, we need to be very careful and protect our skin from the sun’s harmful radiation. May marks ‘Skin Cancer Awareness month’ that acts as reminder to shield ourselves from the harmful sun rays. You can start doing so by following these simple six tips:
1. Seek the shade In countries that are close to the equator, the sun rays are stronger which is why you should avoid coming in direct contact with its rays especially between 10 am and 4 pm. It is best to stay indoors during noon time as the sun rays have a shorter distance to travel from the sky to planet earth which means they are most intense.
2. Don’t get sunburned A sun burn, also commonly known as a sun tan is when the skin releases melanin (pigment) to protect itself from UV damage. Whilst the bronze color of your tan eventually fades, the damaged caused by the sun rays penetrating layers of the skin remains. A common alternative to sun rays is tanning beds. The 46
The Source FAMILY
scary truth is that these tanning beds could sometimes be even more dangerous than the sun rays. Studies have proven that using tanning beds and having an increased risk of all forms of skin cancers are linked.
3. Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen Make it a habit to put on 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body at least 30 minutes before getting exposed to the sun. Make sure it has an SPF of at least 30 or higher. What SPF does is stop the UV rays from penetrating our epidermis, the skin’s first layer, by reflecting it away from its surface. It is also safe to apply sunscreen to babies that are above 6 months old (not younger).
4. Protect your eyes Wearing a hat or a cap is one way to keep your eyes shaded from the sun. However, there are UV-blocking sunglasses that are readily available in the market. If you suffer from myopia (nearsightedness) and have to wear prescription spectacles, then consider one with UV protection and visible light lenses. Cumulative exposure to the sun rays can have detrimental effects on the eye structure and can lead to diseases such as cataracts (clouding of the eye lens) and macular degeneration (loss of central vision).
5. Examine your skin You can self-detect skin cancer
at its early stage by regularly examining your skin. All you need is a full-length mirror in a well-lit room. Especially look for changes in patterns of any he blemishes like moles, birthmarks, or freckles. Some of the red flags you need to look for include new or expanding bumps, bloody sores that is resistant to healing, moles with irregular borders and any crusty patches.
6. See a dermatologist Like the old saying correctly states ‘prevention is better than cure’. A dermatologist will help you take all the necessary measures to prevent skin cancer. Especially if you are at high risk of developing cancer due to compromised immune system or genetic factors, you should consider visiting a skin doctor. The treatment of melanoma is much easier when detected in its early stages. Finally, there are many precautionary measures that you can take to protect your skin from exposure to direct UV rays. The tricky thing about sun damage is that it is not immediately noticeable. It is cumulative and will, over time, be expressed through premature aging and other dermal diseases. So, take control of your health and follow these six tips to keep skin cancer at bay.

An age-old tale of exploration and Endurance Bell’s 412 helicopters helped to uncover the incredible story of Ernest Shackleton’s doomed 1914 expedition to Antarctica and the eventual sinking of his ship, Endurance
50
The Source FAMILY
As anyone involved in search
and rescue will know, finding a ship, even a large one, in an ocean is extremely difficult. The ocean is simply much larger than people ever imagine. A huge container ship can be just a speck on the horizon even from a close distance. But a sunken ship is even more of a challenge. Firstly, locating the wreck is always difficult as ships often end up quite far from where they originally sank, especially in deep water. Only a few brave souls have ever tried to locate the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s doomed expedition to Antarctic over 107 years after it sank. His ship, the Endurance, was swallowed by the unrelenting ice right before the team’s eyes, leading to a story of survival that would ultimately see them all saved, after a hard battle against some of the harshest elements in the world. After surviving on the ice for months as it floated in the Weddell Sea, Shackleton’s team was eventually deposited onto Elephant Island. Shackleton and a few of his team then used one of Endurance’s lifeboats to reach a Whaling station in South Georgia, navigating all the Southern Ocean could throw at them for nearly a month. From there, the rest of the team was rescued, bringing to an end a tail of true survival over the elements. For many, locating the Endurance has been a lifelong project, but its discovery in 2022 finally gave a great ending to an ongoing journey of exploration, bravery and survival in one of the world’s toughest terrains. Finding the wreck was no simple task and required the coordination of a large group of people, companies and equipment involved in the project. With everything from ice-breaking ships, drilling rigs, teams of experts and, importantly, air support, provided by South-African
based Ultimate Aviation, were required to find the ship. The company, which operates nine Bell 412 helicopters, as well as fixed-wing aircraft, was a key player in ensuring the expedition went to plan, both successfully and safely. “We are one of four helicopter companies in the world that operate down in Antarctica and this is our eighth consecutive season there. It’s a very unique and unforgiving terrain because of the weather there, and the remoteness of the area,” said Shaun Roseveare, CEO, Ultimate Aviation. “Eighteen months ago, we got
involved in the planning for the Shackleton expedition. It was an incredibly complicated mission because the wreck is located under three kilometers (or 10,000 feet) of water and constantly shifting ice in the Weddell Sea. This and other factors such as strong winds and temperatures of -18C combined to make it one of the world’s most difficult shipwreck searches.” The project’s task was made somewhat easier by the original notes of the ship’s captain, Frank Worsley, who, using primitive navigation tools, marked down the location of the Endurance as it sank into

the frigid waters of Antarctica. When the wreck was finally discovered, he was just over four nautical miles out, a remarkable achievement for coordinates recorded back in 1915 and a testament to his skills. The company’s Bell 412s were used in a number of critical roles, including moving people and equipment around the ice sheets, and also scouting ahead of the icebreaker, to find the easiest route through the thick ice. Ice is one of the hardest conditions for a helicopter pilot to fly in, but the Bell 412 comes with a long history of research, design and development to cope with ‘icing’ scenarios. Inside, the large, insulated well-appointed cabin became a warm place to escape the Southern Pole’s freezing temperatures. And the 412’s lifting capability also came into its own, allowing the team to fly in much of the heavy equipment needed to drill into the ice. As with any challenging environment, supplies were critical to the success of the expedition, with many of the team on site for over a month searching for the Endurance. Add in the ability of the Bell aircraft to easily move people from one ice pack to another, and the aircraft became a vital component in the successful location of the wreck. “We fly our 412s a lot in Antarctica, so we know what to expect. They are always prepared, over and above what we want them to do. They’re reliable and they don’t let us down. It was a very good platform for this specific operation,” added Roseveare. Although the Endurance will be left where it is, its discovery and the stunning pictures of the ship the world can now enjoy, is, in part, thanks to Ultimate Aviation and the versatility, capability and safety of the Bell 412. With its location now secured, and the sound of helicopters and icebreakers far above now gone, the ship can return to its eternal slumber nearly two miles under the Antarctic ice. Empowered Dating
THE KEY TO HELPING YOU FIND THE PERFECT PARTNER CHRISTIANA MAXION - International Dating Coach The first D: Delete the apps. Get rid of the swiping, pointless chat, made-to-be-broken dates, and channel that lost energy into yourself.
Dating in the 2020’s can be complex, complicated, and confusing. The dating apps give a false perception that there is a never-ending list of options in the dating pool, but when it comes down to it…how many of these options are real, really single, quality, or even a good match for you? There is a lot of time and energy wasted on the apps coupled with damaged self-esteem or lack of confidence in the dating scene. What is the solution? Empowered dating! My four-step system helps you gain direction in dating, elevate your dating standards, and attract your ideal partner.
The second D: Date yourself! Create a list of at least ten things that make you innately happy. Make it visible and promise yourself to do at least one or two of these things every day. Some examples included on my ‘Love Yourself List’ is reality television, yoga, and playing with my puppy. Dating yourself also includes investing in a hobby or interest that you would like to start or further your expertise in. Investing in yourself makes you highly attractive! U: Create your USP list! What are your unique selling points? List all of your accomplishments, achievements, and star attributes. What do you bring to the table and to a relationship? Once
you have established that you are a ten out of ten, your confidence is immediately boosted and you start putting yourself on a pedestal. And, once you’re on a pedestal…it’s easier to see both the green and the red flags. This also helps you to become a better picker of a partner and flips the script. You will no longer think “Does he/she like me?”, your new outlook will be “Do I like them?”. And, of course, C: Call me! Once you’ve established yourself as the CEO of your dating life, book in a consultation to find out more about my matchmaking process. But for those who might have some difficulty with the previous steps or seeking some guidance after a breakup, I offer dating coaching to help you feel empowered, confident, and prepared to take on the Dubai dating-verse. https://christianamaxion.com/

How To Heal And Prevent Ingrown Hairs
Everything you need to know to get a smoother, pain-free shave with no lumps or bumps with Meridien
58
The Source FAMILY
Figuring out how to prevent ingrown hairs can be challenging for anyone who removes body hair, especially if your hair is thick, coarse, or curly. An ingrown hair happens when shaved, plucked, or waxed hair grows back into the skin’s surface, resulting in skin eruptions or infections. In severe cases, ingrown hairs can lead to painful cysts, and ingrowns can also look like small pimples or acne breakouts that show up after hair removal.
Dylan Chou, the General Manager of Meridian said, “If you’re prone to these red, painful bumps after shaving or waxing, know that while preventing ingrown hairs can be tricky, it is doable with the right tools. Healing the ingrowns you already have can take some patience, and it’s important to understand the causes of ingrown hairs so that you can experience less of them over time.” Let’s take a look at what’s contributing to your ingrowns and how you can prevent them going forward.
You’re Not Properly Prepping Your Skin Well-cared-for skin is more resilient when it comes to hair removal, and if you shave with a razor blade, it’s important to make sure that you’re adequately preparing your skin beforehand. Always clean your skin with warm water and face cleanser before shaving, and even better, exfoliate, too. Dirt, debris, and dead skin cells can contribute to the development of razor burn and ingrown hairs, so take the time to cleanse and exfoliate, and then apply a premium shave cream for best results.
Your (Shaving) Technique Needs Work
Revisit Your Method + Upgrade Your Tools
A badly executed shave is one of the top reasons that men develop ingrown hairs. Whether you’re rushing during your morning shave or you just need a refresher tutorial, remember this: shaving against the grain of your hair growth will get you a closer shave –– but it also ups your chances for developing post-shaving irritation and ingrown hairs.
The Trimmer is designed as a body hair shaver to get you a comfortable, safe shave no matter where you like to remove your hair. The Up-Here Trimmer is for smaller, more delicate areas, such as your nose and ears. Trimming is the top way to remove body hair while preventing post-shave irritation and infections.
If you’re working on healing ingrown that you already have, make sure to shave with the grain of your hair growth, not against, while your skin heals. Once your ingrown hairs are gone, you can try shaving against the grain again, as long as you prepare your skin first, shave with a super clean, sharp razor, and make sure to rinse your razor well in between strokes. Also, use as few strokes as possible as you shave, and always apply a good aftershave to help seal up your skin and soothe post-shave irritation.
We carefully designed our body hair shaver so that it’s safe to use, waterproof, and easy for home use or travel. We also designed The Trimmer to handle coarse, thick, and curly hair without nicks, pulling, or tugs –– and to help avoid ingrown hairs and irritation. And The Trimmer’s adjustable guide combs let you choose your preferred hair length. No matter where you like to shave, trimming is your best bet for smooth, pain-free shaving results that help you look and feel your best.
You Shave Your Body Hair, Tweeze, Or Wax These hair removal methods often lead to irritation and ingrown hairs. If you wax, it’s best to seek out a reputable esthetician who’s trained to minimize possible side effects from waxing. Experts don’t generally recommend tweezing as your hair removal go-to, especially if your hair is coarse or very curly. It’s super easy to break a hair when tweezing while not fully removing the root. Tweezing can also damage your hair follicles, leading to bald spots and hair loss. Hard pass.

EAD Abu Dhabi
Celebrates Continued Success of the
World’s Largest Mammal Reintroduction Programme
70
The Source FAMILY
The Environment Agency – Abu
Dhabi (EAD) continues to progress with the world’s largest mammal reintroduction programme. During last March the Agency has successfully translocated 20 Scimitar-Horned Oryx (SHO) and 25 Addax to Chad’s Ouadi Rime-Ouadi Achim Game Reserve. Currently there are 460 ScimitarHorned Oryx in the wild, with 15 calves born so far this year, as well as 96 wild Addax, with 5 calves born to the herd, also this year. Furthermore, for the first time ever EAD successfully translocated five Dama Gazelle on the 14th of March 2022, which have joined the herd of other captured wild Dama Gazelle in the Agency programme. As part of the monitoring programme for the animals, EAD successfully darted 7 wild animals - 6 SHO and 1 Addax - and fitted them with satellite tracking collars, enabling close monitoring to witness survival and reproduction. Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said: «This pioneering project was inspired by the insightful vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who noticed that SHO numbers were declining rapidly and wished to see them flourish once again. Today we are seeing continued success thanks to the support of our wise leadership through the regular translocation of both breeds to their natural habitat in Chad. Both herds of animals are now thriving very well in their natural habitats.”
She added: “We are currently very close to achieving our goal of having a herd of 500 SHO in Chad and, due to the success of this project, we are aiming to go beyond this figure and ensure that the numbers in the wild increase
even further. Alongside the SHO herd, we are working closely with the government of Chad to also reintroduce Addax and Dama Gazelles, and in time we will witness increased numbers of these species, hopefully paving the way for their removal them from the extinction danger list.” The SHO reintroduction programmes strives to create a self-sustaining herd of over 500 heads in the 77,950 km2 Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Wildlife Reserve, decades after the species was declared ‘extinct in the wild’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2000. Initiated in 2014, with the first shipment of animals released back into their natural habitats in 2016, the herds have been closely monitored to ensure they are adapting well to their wild environment. The second phase of the reintroduction programme included adding the critically endangered Addax and, in November 2019, the translocation project was launched with the first pilot batch of 15 animals, followed by the second group of 25 Addax in March 2020. The reintroduction programme of both species involves close collaboration with a range of international partners. These include: the Ministry of Environment in the Government of Chad, the Sahara Conservation Fund (SCF), the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI), Marwell Wildlife, Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Saint Louis Zoo WildCare
Institute, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, and the European Union.
About ScimitarHorned Oryx
SHO are named after their impressive blade-like horns, which are long and curved like a traditional Arabian sword. It is difficult to predict how long the SHO can live in the wild, especially given that their native habitat has changed since the species was declared extinct. However, they typically live up to 20 years in captivity. SHO can survive for months or even years without drinking water. As a grazing animal, they derive most of their daily moisture intake from the plants they eat. Perfectly adapted to the hot, arid desert climate, SHO also have a unique circulation system in their skull, which cools the blood by up to -15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) through capillaries in the nose before it reaches the brain. SHO can sense the slightest variations in air humidity over distances of more than 100 kilometres. This incredible skill for water divination meant that herds were often followed closely by tribes as they sought water.
About the Addax
The Addax is an arid-land antelope that is very well adapted to living in the harsh deserts of the Sahara, rarely needing to drink water to survive. Unfortunately, the Addax’s impressive spiraling horns, meat and hide have been attractive to humans and their population has plummeted during the last century due to the prevalence of poaching, which has been exacerbated by ubiquitous four-wheel drive vehicles and pressures from oil extraction activities. Held at the Kids’ Creative Café at Expo Centre Sharjah, the talks featured young philanthropist Patrick Njoroge Wachira from Kenya, among others. Patrick, a 12-year-old CEO from Kenya left the young audience awestruck with a presentation about his initiative, the PNW Innovations Programme, which offers free STEM education to underprivileged Kenyan children. As part of the initiative, Patrick is working on a Mobile STEM Lab and Makerspace built on a bus equipped with robots and drones, learning kits, and electronic and mechanical workstations, which will travel throughout rural Kenya. “I want to empower every African child to be an innovator,” he said. An avid robotics enthusiast, Patrick said his favourite attraction at SCRF was the Robot Zoo. He added that he draws great inspiration from the UAE’s leaders for their efforts in building up the nation. The line-up of gifted young speakers also included Devi Vaishnavi, a precocious 12-year-old author of two books, who delivered an eloquent speech recounting her writing journey. She said: “I strongly believe that reading lays the foundation for writing books. If we cultivate the habit of reading, then we can experience the joy of writing.” “I am greatly inspired by the words of Toni Morrison: ‘If there is a book you really want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it,’ added the young author, who is currently working on 26 more story ideas. Sharing the inspiration behind her debut novel Vampid: The Vampire Virus, based on the events of the Covid-19 pandemic, Devi said: “This book is a token of love to the doctors, nurses, volunteers, and all those whose efforts have brought us back to our normal lives.” The Sky Speaks, her second novel, champions family values through a story about a young girl’s loving bond with her mother and sisters.

THE RECIPE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, DUBAI, JBR The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai, JBR is part-
nering with Green Container Advanced Farming (GCAF) to strengthen its commitment to fresh, sustainable living with the launch of its very own hyper-local on-site hydroponic farm, one of the first-ever vertical farms in the city. Renowned for providing the highest quality and most innovative dining experiences, The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai strives to serve guests mouthwatering cuisine, prepared with locally grown produce for a delicious taste. By harvesting a variety of herbs, microgreens, lettuce and other ingredients at their own hydroponic facility, just a few short steps away from the kitchen, the hotel promises daily delivery of the most nutritious ingredients in dishes served across their numerous award-winning restaurants. With a focus on food security and regenerative farming practices, the city’s latest vertical farm at The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai is approximately 40 square meters in size and completely sealed to ensure it is totally pesticide and herbicide free. The dynamic farm grows crops year-round
with daily harvests of up to ten kilograms of produce. The freshly-grown selection of herbs includes Italian basil, Thai basil, and rosemary, amongst others, while coast-line lettuce, salanova mix and kale will also be grown. The produce will enhance the skillfully prepared dishes served at the distinct dining establishments such as Blue Jade, Splendido, Amaseena and more. As the first Marriott property in the region to establish a vertical farm, The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability, while supporting the UAE’s ambitious food security goals. The hydroponic technique employed by the resort eliminates the need for soil to grow crops and reduced the amount of water needed for by close to 90% when compared with traditional farming techniques. By having the farm located on the property, the carbon footprint is greatly reduced since logistics in bringing the produce to the hotel are eliminated while also enhancing the quality of freshness.
Jeroen Elmendorp, General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai, commented, “ At The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai, we are proud to be one of the first hotels in the region to provide our guests with sustainably grown, local produce from our innovative vertical farm, across our diverse F&B offerings. The significance of this launch is twofold; we are firstly supporting the UAE on its journey to increasing sustainability, while also enabling our guests to eat locally grown produce, which of course, is more environmentally friendly, but also superior in quality, taste and freshness.” “Looking forward, we aim to boost responsible operations, which involves placing sustainability at the heart of all that we do. I am confident the launch of our very own hydroponic facility will provide our guests with an incredible culinary experience, as we prepare tantalizing cuisine bursting with flavour.” “GCAF LLC is proud to be partnering with Ritz Carlton JBR on this project and look forward to a long relationship in providing the highest quality produce possible.” - Maan Said, CEO, GCAF – Green Container Advanced Farming The Source FAMILY 77

Oman: First Country in the Region to
Produce Science-Based Assessments for its
Shark Population
Shark populations continue to
decline due to unsustainable shark catch practices, including shark finning. Hence, as many countries begin to prioritize the importance of marine life protection and fishing regulations, Oman takes the first step to outline science-based shark catch assessments to further regulate shark catch and trade in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora (CITES), with the support of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). In the Middle East and North Africa region, Oman will be the first country to carry a study in the direction of outlining a science based shark catch assessment known as “CITES Non-Detrimental Findings” (NDFs). Funded by the Shark Conservation Fund, and with the technical support of Save our Seas Foundation, the threeday workshop will start on 17 May in Muscat, Oman.
What are CITES NDFs?
CITES is a convention regulating the international trade in endangered species between countries, which are referred to as “parties”. To regulate and systemize the international trade process, CITES designated “Appendix II” list for species which are allowed to be internationally traded for commercial purposes on the condition that it is regulated and its export will not be 80
The Source FAMILY
detrimental to the survival of that species in their natural habitats. The decision on whether or not the export is detrimental will be determined by the Scientific Authority of the State of export based on the NDF assessment. NDF is carried out through data collection, which is the core purpose of the NDF. Therefore, to complete the NDF, the data collected must comprise the biological characteristics of the species—breeding period, species count and survival, the pressure on the species in terms of catch and trade, and finally the existing laws concerning its protection.
What is the challenge in outlining NDFs? Referred to as “non-detriment findings”, these are intended to ensure that exports of individual listed animals and their products and derivatives, have not harmed wild populations or ecosystems which they have come from. Because the Scientific Authority of each CITES Party is responsible for making NDFs and determining how to do so, the Conference of the Parties (CoP) has not produced binding technical criteria for undertaking NDFs—in other words, NDFs are specifically tailored for each country and it is the countries responsibility to undertake it. Therefore, considerable effort has been made by some CITES Parties, inter-governmental organisations (IGOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the CITES Secretariat and the CoP to develop
non-binding general and taxonspecific guidance for making NDFs. This is where IFAW steps in. IFAW in cooperation with the Environment Authority, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Recourses, will provide an outline to collect data and complete the NDFs assessment for the most caught shark species in Oman: the silky and bigeye thresher sharks. Participants including local authorities as well as on-ground expertise such as the National Marine Research Centre, and the Environment Society of Oman, will be participating in the workshop and take part in completing the NDFs.
Why are NDFs important? In the Arabian Seas alone, there are more than 30 different species of shark, and the majority need protection since three-quarters of the species studied are now threated with extinction according to IUCN criteria. “To be able to protect species, we must know about them” says Akram Eissa Darwich, IFAW’s MENA Program Manager. He continues, “Undertaking NDFs in Oman will support the authorities in making the right decisions concerning trade which will ultimately save them”. Undoubtedly, building capacity in this scientific route is a necessary step to combat
wildlife trafficking, and those who will participate in this novice process will be fundamental in improving the national laws that regulate trade according to CITES.
Steps forward?
IFAW is encouraging other countries to follow lead and begin working on their NDFs which will enable them to develop their national legislation based on scientific research that will ultimately protect more animals that are endemic to the country, and is considered to many, an invaluable national treasure. Moreover, IFAW is highlighting the importance of neighbouring countries working together as many of the species are migratory and their protection would be impossible without the collective effort of the countries and their unity in the conservation mission.
H.E Yaqoub Khalfan Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources for Fisheries, H.E. Dr. Abdullah Bin Ali Al Amri, chairman of Oman’s Environment authority, and Akram Darwich Eissa, IFAW’s Regional Program Manager at the first NDF workshop in the MENA region held in Muscat, Oman.

STUNNING LA-INSPIRED MANSION ON THE PALM SELLS FOR
AED 63 MILLION

The Source FAMILY
LUXHABITAT Sotheby’s Inter-
national Realty is proud to announce it has closed a deal for an LA-inspired beach mansion on the Palm Jumeirah at AED 63 million. Spanning 8,600 sq ft with its coveted location on N Frond, the five-bedroom Garden home’s smart home technology, excellent condition and bespoke finishes made it a rare option in the market. “Homes of this calibre are extremely hard to find in the Dubai market now due to a limited supply of product offerings like these as well as an influx of luxury property buyers who are seeking exactly this type of quality home. The home was presented in absolute mint condition – which went well noticed by the buyers and made them fall in love with it almost immediately.” Shares Kunal Singh Gupta, Associate Director of LUXHABITAT Sotheby’s International Realty who represented both buyer and seller in the transaction. The European buyer purchased this Californian style beach house as an end-user who has recently moved to Dubai with his family. LUXHABITAT Sotheby’s International Realty has reported buyers of a similar profile in the recent past - many HNW / UHNW international buyers are being drawn to Dubai as home. The Palm Jumeirah has made
a big comeback after 2020 in terms of prime residential sales. Over AED 4.6 billion in sales have been recorded this year so far in the area, based on data from the Dubai Land Department, out of which 57 villas have been sold for a sales volume of AED 1.59 billion. “The most in-demand luxury homes now are those designed in a modern or Mediterranean style, with a larger plot and built-up area as well as mega-mansions with views over beach or golf course or park (depending on the location). Super prime villas, apartments and penthouses are most in demand, as people living here like to enjoy the sun and outdoors as much as possible. Areas such as Palm Jumeirah, Jumeira Bay Island, Emirates Hills, and Dubai Hills are catering to the wealthiest 1% of the world, which is a great sign for Dubai & the UAE moving forward.” Says Kunal. According to analysis by LUXHABITAT Sotheby’s using data from the Dubai Land Department, the top 10 most expensive properties sold in Q1 2022 were from the Palm Jumeirah, Emirates Hills, Jumeira Bay and Downtown Dubai areas. Besides location, Kunal also lists quality of build, use of home automation technology, in-house amenities, privacy, availability of dining & entertainment options, and proxim-
ity to schools on the checklist of Dubai’s luxury property buyers. “Most of the high-value buyers also focus on the uniqueness of the property and all added benefits of living within that sought after community with many things to match the lifestyle they are typically used to overseas & otherwise.” he adds.
More about the villa The villa sold was built from scratch on the plot and designed with keen attention to detail by the sellers. The Garden Home with sunset views has a contemporary style and hosts neutral colors. The exotic open plan living area is modern and airy with a beautiful transition to the outdoors and breath-taking sea views with automated guillotine windows designed to create seamless indoor/ outdoor living with pocket doors to privatise the living & dining space as needed. All the furniture in the villa is of Italian make - with pieces from high-end brands like Minotti, Flexform, Poliform, Paola Lenti, and Poltrona Frau all flown in from their respective design studios. The home also has an infinity pool that hosts a swim jet and access to 3km of prime beachfront. The whole home is automated with the use of top-end smart home technology and security systems. The terraced exterior has plenty of room for relaxing or partaking in some al fresco dining along with a jacuzzi on the rooftop, all of which overlook the private beachfront and fantastic Atlantis views.
