By Lakmee Senadheera Martyn Crocker, a talented singer and songwriter from the UK who currently spends his days working as a secondary school music teacher at a school in Al Ain, has just released a new album titled ‘Songs to Soundtrack your Adventures’. Martyn describes his song collection as a varied set of eight original songs that he composed and recorded since emigrating to the U.A.E. He says the concept album “in part tells the story of moving, travel, embracing the unknown and adventures.” He feels that listeners will relate to these songs and that they accompany many of their own experiences. Martyn performs all over the U.A.E, with his most recent in-person performance at the ‘Music On the Boardwalk’ event in Abu Dhabi just before Ramadan and in the last year he has performed in the Capital, Dubai and Al Ain in residencies and lots of individual performances. His performances are full of original songs and covers of other artists. Martyn is looking forward to performing again after Ramadan and performing songs from his album to audiences. To listen to ‘Songs To Soundtrack Your Adventures’ you can order a CD through his online store, or it is available from all online streaming sites, such as Spotify, Apple Music or Anghami. Retainers after braces are they really needed? Dr Diwakar Raju, Specialist Orthodontist - Al Ain

askdiwakar@yahoo.com

What are retainers? Retainers are appliances that are meant to retain the teeth in their new place, as the name indicates, they ‘retain’ the teeth. Most of the retainers do not have any capacity to move the teeth by even a small amount. “Doc, I have just completed my 18 months of treatment with braces, you are telling me to wear the retainers for another year, are you serious?” This is the question that I get asked by my patients who did not have the patience to listen to my ‘before the start of treatment’ briefing about the whole journey with braces. 14

The Source FAMILY

There are two major types Removable and fixed. Fixed retainers as the name indicates, are fixed to the back side of your teeth. They are made up of very thin wires that are attached with an adhesive to the back side of the teeth, it’s not visible to others, you have to look through

a mirror at an angle to be able to see it yourself. You can eat with it, brush over it and almost do all your normal activities while still having them on. Removable retainers on the other hand are removable, and are meant to be removed while eating, drinking and brushing. There are two types of removable retainers available: Clear retainers which are vacuum formed, fit over your teeth without extending much over your gums or other soft tissue. They are hardly noticeable at speaking distance and comfortable to wear. The only downside of clear retainers is that, they can break easily, and so will demand careful handling.

Hawley retainer - have an acrylic plate that covers a portion of the palate and has a wire which covers the teeth. This wire is quite visible at speaking distance. Because of the acrylic and the wire components, they can be little uncomfortable in the first few days. The bright side of this type is that they are quite durable and do not break easily (although I have had kids who have broken this retainer as well!!.

How important are retainers? Well, I would say, it’s as important as your treatment with braces, if not more. Yes!. What’s the point of treatment if the results achieved are not stable? And retainers are the only way in which the achieved results can be stabilised, particularly if you have taken treatment in adulthood, let’s say after 18 yrs of age, when a large extent of your growth is complete. That’s another advantage of starting treatment early on in life (Please refer to my earlier article in this magazine when is the right age to bring your child for an Orthodontic consult?) Cannot take my word on this? –

here is the reference from the American Association of Orthodontists (which is a highly reputed body of Orthodontists), please go through the link and understand what they have to say about retainers. Orthodontic Post-Treatment | Your Guide to Orthodontics (aaoinfo.org) If you would be interested to have the pdf document from AAO, pls email me on the address below and I shall gladly send it across to you.

Why are retainers necessary? Teeth are moved from one place to another using braces or clear aligners like Invisalign, and when they are discontinued after the treatment is over, the teeth have a tendency to move back to their original place. Well, it might not move to its actual, original place, but they can potentially move. If this movement happens right in the front teeth, which is quite visible, are you willing to accept that change? Please understand any further correction will require treatment with braces, once again. Yes, you heard me

right, you will have to start all over again. This is exactly the reason why I strongly recommend fixed retainers for upper and lower front teeth and removable upper and lower retainers over the fixed retainer, for a period of approximately one year after removal of braces (there are few cases which require longer wear, however.) The fixed retainers will stay for life, they are harmless, will become a part of your mouth and you will forget you even have it, after a couple of days. Even if you remove your fixed retainers after 5 years, your teeth can potentially move.

Can I have braces for an extended period, after completion of treatment and avoid the retainers? Sorry, it’s a no. To achieve stability, a slight movement of teeth should be allowed in the new position and braces will not allow that to happen, hence retainers are mandatory. To sum it up, if you are someone who is very particular and do not wish any unexpected movement of teeth after completion of treatment with braces, go for fixed retainers for upper and lower along with removable retainers for upper and lower teeth.

Al Ain Amblers Victory at Ras Al Khaimah to end the season! By Maniue Vilsoni

On Saturday, 16th April, the Amblers did it again at the Ras Al Khaimah Rugby Fest ‘22 with another win. This time, in the Plate Final against a feisty RAK team. Tied, 17-17 at fulltime, the Amblers won 22-17 in golden time. In this 10-aside final, the Amblers fielded a mixed team of youngsters with a crop of senior players and evergreen veterans.

16

The Source FAMILY

Injuries mounted as the Amblers negotiated a tough round in pool play. Having defeated RAK in game one, the Amblers played against a well-drilled Mussafah team, an uncompromising Barrelhouse lot and then the Dubai Tigers who fielded their contingent of Pacific Island players. In the Plate semifinals, the Amblers managed to pip an experienced Jebel Ali Dragons’ side.

Throughout the humid day, the Amblers had Peet Vreugdenburg Jnr and his two sons, Vian and Victor in the front row with club chairman Sean Emmett and utility player Llewellyn James interchanging. At lock, there were Stephen Huemer, CJ, Gerhard Schafer, Andrew McKinney and Maniue Vilsoni. The backline had: Clint Sacks, Ovidiu Dambrava, Wihan

Grobler, Tomas Gasco, Thomas Hanks, Brandon Cullinan, Liam Chalkley, Simon Graves and Bart Bracegirdle. In the final, the Amblers played catch-up rugby and dotted their equalizing try in the last second. They were trailing 10-17 before Tomas Gasco crossed the white line. In golden time, the Amblers, after a passionate pep talk

from FC Holdt and coach Frans Van Dyk and cheered on by their squad, kicked deep into the RAK twenty-two and Clint Sacks managed to dot down over the white line for a well-deserved victory. It was a win built on the strength of a good squad, great support from medics Tarryn James and Tara Jones and tour organiser and entertainment director Alaa Samaan.

It was fitting for the Amblers to stay the night at the Bin Majid Beach Hotel and join the aftermatch festivities at the Al Hamra Golf Club ground. The RAK Rugby Club must be applauded for hosting a great day of rugby and event-managed a lovely presentation ceremony.

Al Ain English Speaking School the Only School in Al Ain Endorsed

by the British Government

18

The Source FAMILY

Al Ain English Speaking school (AAESS) is one of the oldest schools in Al Ain, and certainly the oldest school offering the British Curriculum. Set up in 1979 by the engineers of the Balfour group for their worker’s children, AAESS has grown incredibly from the sands of Al Ain. In 2015, Andrew Thomas became the latest Principal of the school, having worked as an Assistant Principal in the UK for nearly 16 years in one school, seeing the school gain the coveted Ofsted (the UK’s education inspectorate), ‘Outstanding’ grade.

Today, Thomas celebrates a new milestone for AAESS, as the school has become the first and only school in Al Ain to be awarded the British Schools Overseas Award (BSO). Thomas explains, ‘That to achieve this award, you have to show a team of British inspectors, that you are operating the school at a good or better level, and equivalent to a school in the UK. Basically, a team of Ofsted inspectors come to your school, and test the school’s ethos, attainment and achievements”. According to the British Government’s website, there are now only 29 schools with this award in the whole of the UAE, with only 7 being awarded in Abu Dhabi. Thomas went on to add, “The award is testimony to the hard work of the staff at AAESS who I

am blessed to work with, and I am delighted to share this with the trustees, parents and students alike, who make the school what it is today’. The inspection covered 9 elements plus the provision of English, Maths, and the Sciences. This included the quality of teaching; the spiritual, cultural and moral development of the pupils; the welfare, health and safety of pupils; the premises; the school’s procedures for handling complaints; leadership of the school; and the early years & 6th form provisions. The report highlights how the school produces exam results that exceed their UK counterparts, and also acknowledged the strong work that was done by the school during the height of COVD and closures. Thomas added, “The wording on the report is very clear, that we have been officially, ‘Endorsed by the British Government and quality assured by Ofsted’. We will continue to work hard to ensure the high standards are maintained and exceeded”. The school is also waiting upon its Irtiqa’a report grade where the school was one of only a few in Abu Dhabi to ask confidently for an early inspection in November 2021. Whilst schools are not told their grades until June this year, AAESS is confident it will celebrate a very well deserved and rewarding grade. Thomas concluded,

“We have some big developments going on here at the moment, and we can’t wait for our new STEAM Centres (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) to open in late August, where again we will set some more Al Ain and maybe some UAE ‘firsts’, offering a new Home Economics suite; Engineering workshop and garage; TV green rooms and a radio station, alongside 2 suites of Apple Mac computers to support the students learning in these areas that will be offered in the curriculum and at examination level. Feeling the squeeze?

‘Fuel’ your savings with these tips to slash your grocery and petrol bills

Alison Soltani

Everyone is feeling the pinch due to rising costs at the moment. Unfortunately, many people are feeling the squeeze on items they deem necessary to maintain a basic standard of living, such as food and fuel. For most, filling their car with petrol or doing the weekly grocery shop doesn’t fill them with joy – these are necessary expenses. Therefore, it can feel extra frustrating when these things increase substan-

24

The Source FAMILY

tially in cost, but your income doesn’t necessarily rise in tandem, particularly if you have savings goals you are trying to meet.

cle. Check out my Instagram and website for more savings and budgeting tips and let me know which method saves you the most money.

I’ve noticed a significant increase in my own fuel and food costs. Everyone has different circumstances, but my petrol bill was 35% higher in March 2022 when compared to March 2021. My grocery bill shows a 7% increase between March 2021 and March 2022, and I believe it may only be 7% because I continuously seek ways to save on groceries.

Fuel your future goals by pinching the pennies on petrol

Many other costs have gone up over the last few months, but as most people regularly spend money on groceries and fuel, these will be the focus of the savings tips in this arti-

Leave your car at home The first and most obvious tip to save on fuel is to use your car less. The summer months are now creeping up on us, which are not as conducive to this, but during the winter months, you could try walking and cycling as much as possible to maximise the weather and your wallet. I know people who cycle 11 kilometres to work every day. You could also try challenging yourself to not use your car for one day of the weekend (or the whole week-

end) by planning activities in and around your home. Carpooling for work commutes and children’s activities with your neighbours is also a fantastic way to save money and time.

forgotten boxes of clothes, household goods, books, toys and other miscellaneous items day after day. Take some time this weekend to clear out your car and save money on your bills.

Plan your trips efficiently

Drive with your dirhams in mind

If you use your car for errands, activities or events several days a week, could you do all your errands in a certain area on one day of the week? For example, if you have to go to the bank, post office and attend a medical appointment and all are located within the same vicinity, plan to tick all these items off your to-do list on the same day. This takes a bit of planning, but you’ll find organising your calendar saves you time and money in the long run.

The chances are that at some point, you are going to have to use your car and burn through some petrol. Although I am by no means an automobile expert, it is well known that excessive accelerating or braking and use of the air conditioning is going to use more fuel. During the summer months, switching the air conditioning on in cars is necessary, but consider keeping it on the lowest setting for your comfort level. Avoiding rapid accelerating, decelerating, and braking can reduce fuel costs by 15-30% so it appears that slow and steady wins the fuel-efficiency race. Maximise flavour, minimise costs with these grocery-saving tips

Give your car a health check Although it may cost money upfront, making sure your car has regular services can help your fuel consumption and prevent expensive repairs. As well as a regular service, check your tyre pressure (and inflate if necessary) at your nearest Adnoc free of charge. According to studies, every 1% decrease in tyre pressure correlates to a 0.3% reduction in fuel economy, not to mention an increase in the risk of accidents.

Lighten the load The more weight your car is hauling, the more petrol it will use, so it makes sense to unload your car regularly. Many people are carrying long

Get the lay of the land Before you plan your meals or do any grocery shopping, take an inventory of your kitchen. Check all your cabinets, fridge, freezer, drawers – anywhere you may have food stored. You might be surprised that you already have most ingredients to make a few meals and can reduce your weekly shop. When you make your shopping list, lay it out like the grocery store. For example, if toiletries are the first aisle, list your toiletries first. This will help you stick to your list as

you move around the shop.

Plan, plan and plan some more! Meal planning can help reduce your grocery bill and prevent excessive takeaways. There’s nothing wrong with takeaways or eating out, but if you are trying to cut back on these, meal planning is the key. What helps me is meal planning at the same time every week, so it becomes built into my routine. There are many ways of doing this – some people keep a whiteboard in their kitchen, while others prefer writing in a notebook or updating a digital document. Whichever method suits you, stick to it and over time, you will see your savings grow.

Arm yourself against temptation! Grocery shops are notoriously effective at advertising and tempting you to purchase impulse items not on your neatly prepared list. A few tips to come out of your grocery shop with your budget intact include never shopping when you are hungry and limiting your trips to once or twice a week maximum. Also, make sure you look up and down for items, as often the most expensive goods are stored at eye level to encourage people to select them. Finally, schedule your trip before an appointment or meeting so that you have limited browsing and purchasing time in the shop.

The Source FAMILY 25

Batch and bulk to boost your budget It doesn’t always make sense to buy in bulk, but if a non-perishable item that you use regularly is on offer and you have the space to store it, then it makes sense to buy more of it than you immediately need. When this doesn’t make sense is if you buy anything and everything for the sole reason that it is on offer. What has helped me to cut my grocery bill in half is batch cooking in bulk and freezing portions of meals. Cooking large meals and ensuring you section some to eat the following day can save you cooking every day and reduce the amount of ingredients you have to buy. If you make enough to freeze some, this could prevent you from ordering takeaway when

26

The Source FAMILY

you are tired and you haven’t planned dinner. You could also try baking snacks, such as flapjacks and muffins for lunchboxes to save on buying these expensive items pre-packaged from the supermarket.

Order your groceries online I have saved the best for last as this strategy has saved me more money than all the other tips combined. When I switched to online delivery, I noticed that I didn’t buy impulse purchases and found it much easier to price compare brands than scanning busy and packed supermarket shelves, trying to match labels with their counterparts. I can shop in my own time and comfort, and in my personal experience, the quality of delivered items has always been acceptable. Also, there are often

discount vouchers and codes available online to make further savings. I hope these tips help you save on the essentials, so that you can free up more money to enjoy yourself, pay down debt or save for your future. Life is for living and while we shouldn’t be obsessively cutting down on everything, keeping some of these ideas in mind may help you save more over time. I managed to cut our household grocery bill in half without much (if any) sacrifice and saved myself some time every week. Everyone is different and has a unique set of circumstances, so try something out and if it doesn’t work, try something else. Check out my Instagram and website and let me know which is your favourite money-saving tip.

any expectations that we had on our visit. Admittedly none of our 5-member squad (2 adults and 3 kids) had any pervious experience with free roam VR gaming so we were unsure of what to expect. The games were incredible

though and once you started, the immersion within the game was complete.

Age Restrictions: The standard age restriction is 12 years, but younger children are allowed in based on physical stat-

ure. The VR packs (which allow you to play the game) weigh 6kg’s and games are around 30 minutes so smaller children could find it challenging to manage physically. It is recommended to call ahead of time to confirm access for players that maybe are not quite at the 12 year cut off. Our group had players of 10 years and they did fine, but its best to check to avoid disappointment.

Games: Games are available for between 1-8 players per session. Games are age restricted and younger players have access to a two game combination of Engineerium and Singularity that total up the 30 minute play time. Combination sessions are played back to back within the same game time. The other games carry higher restrictions up to 18 so if it is zombies or a terrifying trip into the insane, be sure that the players are 15, 16, or 18 years plus depending on your desired choice. An e-mail with your game results are sent to your registered address directly after the game so those with bragging rights can have proof of victory!

Source Verdict: Zero Latency is not just for teenagers and is a great experience to enjoy with family and friends. Suitable for all levels of fitness and even those that are a bit nervous about trying new things. One player in our group is usually extremely claustrophobic and nervous but was totally fine. For those looking for something different to do with parents visiting from abroad, Zero Latency is an outing that no one will forget. The incredible world of Engineerium is like nothing we have ever experienced and getting to shoot at flying robots in Singularity was extremely satisfying! 10 out of 10 for this entertainment venue that is truly out of the world.

Cost: All of the games along with the play time and prices are listed on the Zero Latency website. We recommend that you pre book online. Each session can only take one group, so arriving on the day might see very long wait times. Game prices start at AED150 pp per session and go up to AED200 pp per session depending on which game you choose. Arrive 20 mins before your game time to allow for the safety briefing and kit out. This is important since you don’t want to overrun your session. By WENDY PEACH The Source FAMILY 29

Five reasons why you need

MANUKA HONEY in your life

So we’ve all heard that Manuka Honey has healing properties, but what does it really do? Well, a lot, it seems. Here’s just a handful of reasons why you need this magical ingredient in your life, like, right now…

IT’S A SECRET SUPERFOOD

Yes, that’s right. Just like acai, kale and blueberries, Manuka Honey is celebrated for its nutritionally dense make up. But not all Manuka Honeys are made equal… be sure to check the Methylglyoxal content (MGO) – the active ingredient that makes it so special. In layman’s terms, the higher the MGO, the stronger the effects. To ensure you’re getting maximum health benefit, be sure to pick a quality medical grade product, like BinSina 100% Natural Manuka Honey that starts at MGO 800+ and tops out at a staggering 1,050+. That’s serious superfood power.

IT’S A NATURAL

ANITBIOTIC

So it’s true that all raw honey products contain healing qualities, due to their hydrogen peroxide content, but Manuka Honey is on a whole other level. Medical grade Manuka Honey with a minimum of 800+ MGO is known to have special compounds that fight infections and kill bacteria in the throat and gut. But there’s no need to wait until you’re sick… pop a tasty BinSina Manuka Honey & Lemon Lozenge daily to boost your immunity for all-year-round wellness.

ITS GREAT FOR YOUR SKIN

Cuts, scrapes, burns, stings? Yep, you’ve guessed it, Manuka Honey helps you heal. Its combined anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties speed up the healing process by repairing cells and fighting irritation. Suffering from chapped lips and dry skin? No problem. Slather on to your lips, elbows, heels, and hands to lock in moisture and smooth skin.

IT HITS THE SWEET SPOT A spoonful a day will keep the doctor at bay, so whether you like to take it straight up, or dissolve into your morning tea or coffee for a little natural sweetness, be sure to work it in daily to support digestion, health, and healing.

IT’S LIMITED EDITION

Well, kind of! With a limited production cycle of just 4-6 weeks every year, due to the Manuka Flower’s highly sensitive nature, coupled with the remoteness of the quality crops, genuine Manuka Honey is quite the catch. Produced in low volume, quality Manuka Honey may sit towards the higher end of the price scale, but the health benefits speak for themselves. • • • •

Tawam Hospital’s Down Syndrome Program helps children reach their full potential 34

The Source FAMILY

COMMUNITY Tawam Hospital, part of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), the UAE’s largest healthcare network, urges parents to ensure early detection and prevention of medical and developmental issues associated with Down syndrome. Down syndrome is a genetic condition in which an individual has an extra copy of chromosome 21, making their total chromosome count 47 rather than the normal 46 resulting in intellectual and physical issues. The lifelong condition is associated with considerable health issues posing several challenges to children, their parents, and healthcare providers. However, if managed effectively, children with Down syndrome can live life to the fullest as valued members of the community. Tawam Hospital offers a comprehensive Down Syndrome Program, one of the few in the UAE, to provide holistic care and support to children living with the condition. The program is designed to aid children in reaching their full potential and to function as independently as possible. Key services offered within the program include: • Comprehensive medical and genetics evaluation • Comprehensive developmental evaluation • Referrals as required to other sub-specialists and ancillary services • Coordinated care for

each patient managed by our staff • Regular and/or continuing follow-up care (to be assessed and coordinated with primary care physicians and families based on individual needs) Adding to this, Dr. Latifa Al Mansoori, Specialist Pediatrician at Tawam Hospital, said: “At Tawam Hospital, we recognize that irrespective of the challenges that a child with Down syndrome must overcome, he or she, like any other child, has the potential to live a complete life and grow to be contributing members of the society. Our staff works with each child’s primary care physician to coordinate the several necessary services that these children need. Additionally, they educate parents so that they can grow to be strong advocates for their children and assist them in locating useful resources within their community.” The program has already benefited several children and functions as a support system for parents. Speaking further to this, the father of a child who is part of Tawam Hospital’s Down Syndrome Program said: “Our child’s diagnosis was very overwhelming for us, both me and my wife knew very little about Down syndrome. It was very painful to see our baby getting admitted several times over

respiratory illnesses. The program at Tawam Hospital really helped us when we were feeling very lost. Today, we’ve come a long way – our son has grown to love life and his future looks bright. He’s very energetic and loves sports and music.” The child’s mother added:

“All my children deserve the best that life has to offer and it my job as a mother to ensure that he lives a grand life – providing him with the right medical treatment and support is a part of ensuring a wonderful future for him.” The Down syndrome clinic at Tawam Hospital is operational every Monday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM and Tuesday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Taps see a lot of dirty hands on an average day, which makes them a popular spot for bacteria to hide. Use the same Zoflora as you did on your sink and wipe around all the taps, making sure to eradicate any nasty germs. 5. The bin is a hotspot for breeding bacteria from food waste so it’s essential to banish bacteria from your bin regularly. Simply soak a clean cloth in diluted

Zoflora (try Lemon Zing) and wipe down the whole bin, inside and out. 6. Don’t forget to clean your dishcloths and sponges which make for the perfect breeding grounds for nasty germs. For this, just fill your sink with warm water and add 1 capful of Zoflora for every 400ml of water, then leave your cleaning items to soak to eliminate 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. 7. Don’t forget to scrub your outdoor areas by pouring diluted Zoflora over your patio. Use a hard-bristled brush to scrub the surface, rinse with water and that’s it! SHAKE UP YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE WITH OUR QUICK START GUIDE TO INDOOR CLIMBING

Welcome to indoor climbing; a world of movement, pure technique, strength and endless fun. Just like any sport, indoor climbing requires regular practice and there are risks involved. Although there are many schools of thought and best techniques for first timers, even the most experienced climbers would agree that finessing the fundamentals is the only way to safely enjoy indoor climbing. Over at CLYMB™ Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s ultimate adventure hub, guests can learn about indoor climbing with the supervision of the facility’s certified instructors using their safety harness, shoes 40

and some climbing chalk. Here are our top five tips to get you started:

Tip #1: Warm up

Before engaging in any movement, the body needs to be warmed up to prevent any injury and to maximize its potential. Mobility and a deep stretch will get the blood flowing to the muscles and increase the heart rate which will enable more oxygen to reach the body and in turn improve the overall athletic performance. A good warm-up will require muscle contraction and relaxation to help the body work faster, smoother and more efficiently. Indoor climbing also

demands mental preparation to create a healthy workflow between technique, coordination and skills, which are all key components to a safe and enjoyable training session.

Tip #2: Technique is key

When learning how to climb, most beginners will likely feel weak and sore, especially in the forearms. This is normal because just like any sport, our muscles will be exerting effort and energy to apply different techniques before we can adapt to a new physical activity. Begin by practicing your footwork and body positioning. Decide in what order you want to

start and put it into action. Look after your footwork and properly position your feet as it will support your lower body to propel you towards the wall. Your legs are so much stronger than you think!

Tip #3: Practice your balance

Balance is crucial, if not the most important pillar of climbing. To maintain a well-balanced center of movement while climbing, start with core exercises and movements to strengthen your muscles to reduce the risk of injury. A useful tip to keep in mind is that the stronger the core, the more efficient and powerful the body becomes, which will improve the overall balance. A pivotal factor for success here is not to solely rely on the biceps; an effective technique is to try to push up the wall through the legs, while keeping the arms straight and the hips as close to the wall as possible to maintain energy levels without feeling depleted.

Tip #4: Stay calm

Breathe, breathe and breathe! Climbing is a sport that requires energy and puts a great deal of tension on the muscles; reason being why controlling the breathing will impact our physical and mental health to reach its peak perfor-

mance. Breathing is an art and even the most skilled athletes tend to overlook this important yet basic action. When you hold your breath, the natural exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide does not occur, which hinders the body’s ability to excel in the execution of the movement. As such, practicing the right breathing technique will help you stay calm, improve your concentration and increase muscle strength. Equally important is having a good footwork technique as our legs are a major muscle group which engages the lower body to maintain proper composure and can significantly improve the breathing cycle while climbing.

increase energy levels, improve the movement and boost recovery and agility.

Tip#5: Safety is important

Managed and operated by Farah Experiences, Yas Theme Parks and CLYMB offer guests a wide range of family-friendly rides, experiences and entertainment shows. It is highly recommended to wear clothes that are comfortable enough and suitable for climbing to ease the overall movement, such as sports leggings or yoga pants. Listening to the instructors’ directions during briefing is as important to help amateurs get the most out of their first climbing experience. Make sure to wear the safety equipment as instructed using a harness and climbing shoes. Indoor climbing also requires climbers to drink water before, during and after the session. In fact, staying hydrated will

With many tips to keep in mind, indoor climbing can be overwhelming for beginners. SURF’S UP Top surfing tips to crush the waves at YAS WATERWORLD’S

Surfing is known to be the ultimate sport that creates immense feelings of freedom and adventure, and the gnarly experience of walking on water. It’s also great exercise, endless fun and, just like any sport, requires training, dedication and a lot of practice. At Yas Waterworld, guests can practice and learn this exciting sport by signing up to Flow Club. Taking place every Sunday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Flow Club provides surfing lessons by certified trainers and lifeguards on Yas Waterworld’s surfing sheet waves, Rush Rider and Bubble’s Barrel, replicating ideal ocean waves at different intensities and sizes. This allows those who dream of surfing to take up the sport at their own pace, slowly ease into it with less intimidation and fear and improve their skills with more confidence and peace of mind. Additionally, Yas Waterworld’s certified surfing trainers have put together some top tips and tricks to further pace guests into what to expect and give them a head start on their exciting surfing experience!

A quick warm-up goes a long way To have a more stable stance on your boards, work on strengthening your core by engaging in quick warm-up exercises and stretching sessions prior to hitting the endless sheet waves of Flow Club. Your trainer will teach you beginner friendly stretches that you can incorporate into your pre-surfing routine.

Stay calm New challenges can be quite scary, so make sure to focus on your breathing throughout your time on the board, relax your muscles clear your thoughts and focus on your posture. Last but not least, don’t hesitate to ask for a break once you feel one is needed.

Take it one step at a time Before riding the waves like a pro, one must first learn the basics of surfing

while familiarizing themselves with their board. This starts with bodyboarding on the Rush Rider sheet wave, which is the smaller version of Bubble’s Barrel - the world’s largest surfing sheet wave. With the trainer, expect to lie on your abdomen as you hold on to the board with your hands and elbows until you get the hang of navigating up, down, left and right with ease. The next step would then be to learn how to slowly get on your knees with ease and once you have that on lock, you will then learn how to fully stand up on your board. Before you know it, you’ll be crushing waves on Bubble’s Barrel and enjoying a three-meter-high wave of roaring water at speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour.

Safety comes first If you fall off your surfboard in what is called a “wipeout”, your first instinct should be to cover your head. Don’t panic, the experience at Flow Club is as safe and fun as it can be. Surfers at heart can sign up to Flow Club by visiting Yas Waterworld’s ticketing counter. Emirates Mars Mission Discovers New Mysterious Martian Aurora Observations of a stunning new type of Martian aurora by EMM’s Hope probe open up new areas for investigating Mars highly dynamic plasma environment 46

The Source FAMILY

The Emirates Mars Mission, the first interplanetary exploration undertaken by an Arab nation, today released stunning new images of Mars’ enigmatic discrete auroras, following a new series of revolutionary observations that promise new answers – and new questions – about the interactions between Mars’ atmosphere, the planet’s magnetic fields and the solar wind. The observations include a never-before seen phenomenon, dubbed the ‘sinuous discrete aurora’ by the EMM team, a huge wormlike aurora that extends halfway around the planet. “When we first imaged Mars’ discrete aurora shortly after the Hope probe’s arrival at Mars in 2021, we knew we had unveiled new potential to make observations never before possible on this scale, and we took the decision to increase our focus on these auroras.” said Emirates Mars Mission Science Lead, Hessa Al Matroushi. “We can obtain nearly whole-disk, synoptic snapshots of the atmosphere to investigate atmospheric phenomena and interactions. It means we are seeing discrete auroral effects on a massive scale and in ways we never anticipated.” The sinuous discrete aurora consists of long worm-like streaks of energised electron emission in the upper atmosphere extending many thousands of kilometres, stretching from the dayside into the nightside of Mars. Imaged when Mars was experiencing the effect of a solar storm, resulting in a faster, more turbulent stream of solar wind electrons than usual, these

aurora observations are some of the brightest and most extensive yet seen by Hope. They include elongated shapes, which may be caused by similarly elongated regions of electron energization conditions in the magnetotail.

The interplanetary magnetic field is carried by the solar wind and drapes around Mars, combining with magnetism in the Martian crust to form Mars’ magnetotail, a complex array of magnetic fields on the Martian nightside. Omran Sharaf, EMM project director, said, “Having additional bandwidth and resources available to us meant we could be opportunistic and focus more on the area of discrete auroras than we had originally planned. That agility has certainly paid off as we have now opened up whole new avenues of investigation into these transient and dynamic phenomena. Novel science was a core mission objective and this is certainly novel.” Observations made using Hope’s EMUS (The Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer) instrument

range between 90-180 nanometre wavelengths. Found at a wavelength of 130.4 nm, the UV emissions imaged in the new set of observations show where energetic electrons are smashing into atoms and molecules in the Martian upper atmosphere, some 130 km above the planetary surface. These electrons come from the solar wind and are energized by electric fields in Mars’ magnetosphere. Dr. Rob Lillis, EMUS team member at the University of California, Berkeley, said: “The sinuous discrete aurora was a shocking discovery that in many ways has us scratching our heads and going back to the drawing board. We have ideas but no solid explanation for why we are observing intense aurora of this shape and at planetary scales. We now have the opportunity to re-examine prior observations of Mars by missions such as MAVEN and Mars Express to search for signatures that could flesh out Hope’s new observations and perhaps help us try and unpick quite what is happening here.” Electrons follow magnetic field lines, so their paths to the atmosphere are determined by the magnetic fields in this environment. The new observations made by Hope include ‘draped’ field lines, which don’t touch the nightside atmosphere, ‘closed’ field lines which connect to the crust at both ends, and ‘open’ field lines which connect the crust to the solar wind. These The Source FAMILY 47

MARS ‘open’ field lines funnel electrons toward the atmosphere in sometimes intricate patterns, which are then reflected in the resulting UV emission detected by EMUS. Because they are spatially confined, these emissions are known as “discrete auroras”. Alongside auroras defined by Mars’ crustal field, the complex shapes of energised electron impact observed by Hope open up new avenues for our understanding of the way in which the combination of planetary and solar interactions impact Mars’ atmospheric dynamics. Three types of aurora have previously been observed around Mars: the diffuse aurora is observed only during intense solar storms, when interactions with the highest energy particles cause the atmosphere around the entire planet to light up. In contrast, the discrete aurora is highly localised and observations made to date have appeared to bear out the theory that it is directly linked to the patchy magnetic fields produced by magnetized minerals embedded in Mars’ crust. Both of these aurorae are observed on Mars’ nightside, while a third class, the proton aurora, has been measured on Mars’ dayside and is driven by interactions between the solar wind and hydrogen in Mars’ exosphere. These three types of aurora had previously been identified, but clear global images of the discrete aurora were elusive until new observations were made by EMM’s probe shortly after its arrival on Mars. Now, an increased focus on discrete aurora observations by the EMM science team has resulted in observations of this new phenomenon of sinuous discrete aurora. “Since those first observations of the discrete aurora, we have continued to see incredible new patterns of aurora that open new insights into the interactions of charged particles in the Martian atmos48

phere,” said Al Matroushi. “There is a very great deal of new information here for the EMM science team to unpick.” One of three instruments on board Mars Hope Probe, EMUS’ principal science goal is the measurement of oxygen and carbon monoxide in Mars’ thermosphere and the variability of hydrogen and oxygen in the exosphere. Hope is following its planned 20,000 – 43,000 km elliptical science orbit, with an inclination to Mars of 25 degrees. The probe completes one orbit of the planet every 55 hours and captures a full planetary data sample every nine days throughout its two-year mission to map Mar’s atmospheric dynamics. EMM and the Hope probe are the culmination of a knowledge transfer and development effort started in 2006, which has seen Emirati engineers working with partners around the world to develop the UAE’s spacecraft design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Hope is a fully autonomous spacecraft, carrying three instruments to measure Mars’ atmosphere. Weighing some 1,350 kg, and approximately the size of a small SUV, the spacecraft was designed and developed by MBRSC engineers working with academic partners, including LASP at the University of Colorado, Boulder; Arizona State University and the University of California, Berkeley. The Emirates Mars Mission is studying the Martian atmosphere and the relationship between the upper layer and lower regions and, for the first time, gives the international science community full access to a holistic view of the Martian atmosphere at different times of the day, through different seasons. Science data releases have been taking place every three months, with the information made freely accessible globally to researchers and enthusiasts, The Hope Probe’s historic arrival at the Red Planet coincided with a year of celebrations to mark the UAE’s Golden Jubilee in 2021.

7 digital practices Kaspersky recommends parents teach to children Social networks becoming a Educating children with the skills they need to protect themselves online can provide great benefits for families. Cybersecurity and digital privacy company Kaspersky shares 7 digital practices that parents can teach their children. In order to survive in today’s Internet world, everyone needs to have certain skills. While adults tend to acquire these skills as new technolo-

gies emerge, today’s children are almost born with a smartphone in their hands. It’s up to parents to teach them how to exist in a world that is constantly bombarded with information. Kaspersky experts recommend building these seven habits for parents to help their children adjust to the Internet: 1. Create a device-free time zone:

When children use technology for a long time, they can become addicted to it. According to researchers from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, this addiction can cause sleep problems, mood swings, weight gain, poor self-image and body image problems. Experts recommend gradually increasing children’s screen time with today’s on-

line world and opting for the removal of restrictions. In addition, some useful tips this regard apply to children of all ages: the simplest and most effective is to not use devices when it’s close to bedtime, and to mute them during the night. It would be wise to negotiate other times when children are prohibited from using the smartphone, such as family meals.

2. Take control of the charger: Although technology develops at the speed of light, today’s devices still run out of power quickly. It’s also a good idea to have kids leave their devices outside of the bedroom, such as in the hallway or kitchen. So the device’s battery is always charged in the morning and your kids won’t be able to watch videos on TikTok trends before going to bed.

3. Pay attention to information security and similar issues: When children step into the virtual world, they are exposed to many dangers both on the Internet and in real life. Start by telling them not to look at their phone while crossing the street or going up and down the stairs. The next topic will be online security, which includes Internet threats such as fraud, personal data theft, viruses

and much more. Tell your kids not to visit suspicious websites (and what that means), not enter passwords or any personal information on those sites, open weird-looking links, or download apps from anywhere but official app stores. Make it clear that they should never share personal documents, credit card information, or photos that could endanger themselves or their friends and family.

ject to unspoken rules. While people often master these things simply by communicating online, children need help avoiding awkward situations, so you should talk to them about some expectations before going online. For example, communication via e-mail and social networks and messaging applications, talk about the differences between communication channels.

Children are unlikely to immediately remember and obey all these rules. You can get help from a reliable security solution in this regard. For example, Kaspersky Safe Kids can help parents to safeguard kids’ activities, monitor their behavior and teach them self-control.

6. Organize information:

4. Aim for sustainable media use: Constant notifications from our devices can make us feel overwhelmed and distracted. You can imagine how hard it is for kids, as even adults sometimes have a hard time resisting the urge to check messages. Limit notifications on your kids’ phones so they’re not distracted while doing homework or other assigned tasks and they can finish their homework faster.

5. Follow digital etiquette: Just like in the real world, behavior on the Internet is sub-

Some say that a regular phone or computer reflects an organized mind. A messy locker probably won’t affect your child’s life, but losing passwords or files or forgetting phone numbers can be a problem. Children need to learn to organize information from an early age.

7. Regularly schedule a digital detox program: With digital technology entering almost every aspect of children’s lives, it has become nearly impossible to avoid information overload. This means kids need to be able to take a step back and make the Internet a less important part of their lives, first with your help, then on their own. instead. Social networks let you hide updates from accounts without unsubscribing. Your friends won’t even know you’ve muted them.o

The Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park has recently hosted an interactive session with Deep Knowledge Group, which revealed the world’s largest healthy aging database mapping the entire longevity sector globally. The database encompasses over 50,000 companies, more than 10,000 investors and over 1,000 R&D hubs, across 20 sectors and 160 sub-sectors, containing over 9.5 million data points. An emerging industry in the MENA region, longevity is estimated to be worth $26.5 trillion in 2022 and expected to reach $33 trillion in 2026 globally. Sitting at the intersection of several vital subsectors such as BioTech, pharmaceuticals, FinTech, InsurTech and many more, longevity is expected to be the largest and most sophisticated industry of all time. The sector is focused on healthy aging, comprising technologies and software that aim to improve the health and lengthen the lifespan of people. It presents solutions for the prevention, detection, monitoring and treatment of chronic diseases. Commenting on this tech talk as part of a Ramadan majlis series the Park is hosting, His Excellency Hussain Al Mahmoudi, Chief Executive Officer of Sharjah Research Technology & Innovation Park, said: “Healthy longevity plays a role in increasing life expectancy, extending the elderly’s productivity and improving their health and wealth. This is at the heart of our efforts as an organization and as a na-

tion. Longevity is affected by many factors such as economic growth, government healthcare policies, the quality of healthcare providers, and the extent to which senior citizens have access to all of that.” Speaking at the event, which was attended by professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors, Anastasia Lit, Director of Investor Relations, Deep Knowledge Group shared her insights into the sector and the investment opportunities it offers, saying: “While ageing poses one of the biggest problems of our time, it presents one of the most promising opportunities. Financial institutions, such as investment banks, pension funds, and insurance companies can either sink or swim when hit by the an increasingly aging population. Whether they will succeed in riding the wave or end up drowning will depend not only on their willingness to deploy new business models adapted to an aging population, but also on the quality of longevity analytics that can be used to develop such business models.” Speaking about the timeliness of the longevity topic and how it affects all of us as individuals, businesses and governments, Baha Hamadi, VP of Communications, Deep Knowledge Group, said: “Healthy aging is the need of the hour. Living longer and wealthier is beyond adopting a healthy, active lifestyle. Even though the longevity industry has witnessed unprecedented levels of growth and maturity over the past decade, the term longevity remains

unclear among many people, including investors who often associate longevity with anti-aging skin creams, fitness and wellness. The sector entails much more than that. Longevity is the deepest of all DeepTech sectors, sitting at the intersection of many frontier technologies including advanced biomedicine.”

In 2006, the World Health Organization developed the concept of Age-Friendly Cities—key destinations for people who seek to live comfortably during their twilight years. While Age-Friendly Cities can be viewed as good places to retire, ‘Longevity Valleys’ will emerge as ideal locations where senior citizens can remain professionally, mentally, socially, and economically active, for as long as possible. Mayo Clinic expert explains why women’s risk of heart disease rose during the pandemic ROCHESTER, Minnesota — The COVID-19 pandemic affected people in numerous ways. For many women, it meant greater challenges and less time to take care of themselves. These are just some of the reasons that may explain why women’s risk of cardiovascular disease increased — and why it is important to make changes, says Mayra Guerrero, M.D., a Mayo Clinic cardiologist. For many women, their complex roles during the COVID-19 pandemic as mothers, teachers and

remote workers brought on not only emotional stress, but also physical stress. “Stress by itself can also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and sometimes even trigger a heart attack,” says Dr. Guerrero. But that added stress is not the only factor. “A poor diet can also be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease or lack of exercise,” she says. Raising awareness is a priority for Dr. Guerrero.

“Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women and men around the world. However, many women do not know that,” Dr. Guerrero says. Dr. Guerrero says you cannot control your age or your genetics, but you can have some control over your cholesterol level, blood pressure and lifestyle choices. “Have a balanced diet that includes more fruits and vegetables, and include exercise in your daily life — ideally every day. But if not at least four days a week. And a very important one: No smoking.”

THE GROWING BUSINESS OF RETURNS NIRANJAN GIDWANI CONSULTANT DIRECTOR | MEMBER UAE SUPERBRANDS COUNCIL | CHARTER MEMBER – TIE DUBAI

Welcome to the world of a progressively growing “unboxed” or “refurbed” market. This now spans across product categories ranging from electronics to wearables, home appliances, furniture, apparel, and even footwear. This article aims to focus mainly on the electronics, mobility, and appliances segment. Apart from a host of specialized sellers who sell via their own platforms, or through offline stores, this seconds market, also called the “Reverse ecommerce market” has generated a good amount of interest from 58

The Source FAMILY

ecommerce giants like Amazon, Back Market, ReBoot, and from product brands like Apple and Samsung. In India, Amazon has branded this as the “Amazon Renewed” range. Refurbished electronics is the distribution of electronic products previously used, returned to the manufacturer, to buy a new product or for several other reasons. Refurbished electronic products are generally tested and after warranting proper functioning, are pushed back to the supply chain. The refurbishment process includes sanitization, triage, data wipe, repairs, replacements, reassembly, testing, quality control, cosmetic repairs, packaging, and shipping. Furthermore, refurbished electronic products are better substitutes to promote reusability of the product and to reduce

e-waste. The refurbished electronics market is developing at a significant rate as the end-user vertical of the market is growing rapidly. Electronics are being offered at inexpensive rates and the urgent need to reduce e-waste being generated is anticipated to boost growth of the refurbished electronics market. With a certain segment of customers upgrading their gadgets fairly frequently, an opportunity area now exists across the world to refurbish these products to a new condition and provide a limited period warranty. As per a general understanding of the trade, in the electronics and mobility segment, the “reverse ecommerce market” could be divided into three broad categories – The Open Box category, The Excess Inventory Stock, and the Refurbished category.

COMMENTARY When any buyer has opened the seal of the box before returning the product back to the ecommerce seller, the product is categorized as open box category. Excess inventory stocks are invariably boxed products but could be end of line or older models. These are down sold by brands or distributors, but with intact warranties. It is the unboxed-refurbished category which is beginning to gain a lot of traction. There is a growing number of customers who are open to the idea of buying a refurbished product if they can get a good warranty from a reliable seller. One of the reasons this category is becoming a growing viable proposition is because it is not viable for brands, manufacturers, or distributors to store returned goods or to repair them. It is these products which are sold to refurbished/ open box dealers at deep discounts. The refurbished or open box sellers repair, touch up, repackage these products, and sell them at significantly lower prices. It has been observed that products like mobiles, wearables, laptops sell quite well online. Apparel, furniture, footwear, and appliances are generally sold in the offline mode. The market of unboxed-refurbished products has grown rapidly over the past few years. The pandemic has positively impacted the refurbished electronics market.

Millions of people have had to work or study from home for the first time. These millions have augmented the demand for information technology hardware, particularly in third world markets and in the lower segments of society globally. Additionally, the supply chain issues, and chip shortage issues are also providing tail winds to this business. Enterprises are reaching out to providers of refurbished electronics to cater to this demand, which in turn is expected to fuel the growth of the refurbished electronics market. The key problem for unboxed-refurbished product sellers is the presence of several unorganized players, especially in the offline space. These end up giving a bad name to the entire refurb business. The Asia Pacific region is anticipated to witness the highest market share in the refurbished electronics market owing to the extensive production capacity and availability of refurbished devices to provide the equipment in secondary markets, which is further boosting the growth of the refurbished electronics market. North America is expected to witness the highest growth rate in terms of revenue in the refurbished electronics market, due to rise in government regulations on reducing e-waste. This in turn will help in reducing e-waste and further help companies to pursue business oppor-

tunities from old and used products. The Indian market for unboxed-refurbished goods is growing rapidly. It is believed that brands and organized online players who have got into this segment and are willing to go that extra mile to provide quality service are making better margins than in the sale of new products. In the GCC and South Asia, what has been observed is that out of the traditional, decades old distributors, intermediaries, and fulfillment partners of new products of key brands, very few have caught on to this opportunity area. The online aggregators and new startups are taking up this role too.

There is still room, as the space is not too crowded in the organized unboxedrefurbished segment. All it requires is finding a good, reliable, regular supply of returned goods, a down-the-line sale strategy, and backing it up with quality service. The Source FAMILY 59

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced its discovery of a new Eagle Ray species in Abu Dhabi waters. The new species (Aetomylaeus wafickii) was discovered from specimens collected in the Arabian Gulf during the Fisheries Resource Assessment (FRAS) which was carried out in 2016.

Eagle Ray (Aetomylaeus nichofii), by having a larger number of pale blue bands across its dorsal surface (810 bands), a larger number of tooth plate rows, and a shorter tail. This description was published in the Marine Biodiversity Journal on the February 11, 2022.

The specimens were collected with other specimens of elasmobranchs and fish. During that time the Eagle Ray was identified as the Banded Eagle Ray (Aetomylaeus nichofii), which is very similar in

Ahmed Al Hashmi, Executive Director of Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Division at EAD said: “It is very exciting for us to discover a new species of Eagle Ray in Abu Dhabi. This is a prominent indication that our waters are healthy and that we have an abundance of marine biodiversity. “Within the past two years, we have discovered a series of species, and I am confident that we

can make even more discoveries in the future, as long as we continue adopting accurate scientific methodologies to ensure credibility.

appearance. However, it was then considered new after thorough examination and the publishing of a scientific paper highlighting its astute physical description. The newly described species can be distinguished from similar species - the Bluebanded Eagle Ray (Aetomylaeus caeruleofasciatus) and Banded

“To ensure longevity and sustainability of our species, at EAD we engage in extensive rehabilitation programmes so that our species can thrive for future generations and enjoy the breadth and beauty of Abu Dhabi’s biodiversity.” Fisheries surveys in the United Arab Emirates waters have made it possible to collect many specimens in the Arabian Gulf, that were then examined and compared to other regional variants of the

species. Over 600 specimens of fish were collected along with several elasmobranchs. Specimens collected and measured have been deposited into fish collections at the California Academy of Science (CAS), Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ), Harvard, and United States National Museum Smithsonian (USNM). Batoidea family (rays) is closely related to the shark family and includes rays, skates, guitarfish and sawfish. There are over 630 batoid species altogether. Like sharks, their skeletons are composed entirely of cartilage rather than bone. Batoids are typically flattish in shape and are generically referred to ‘flat sharks’. Most batoids are bottom feeders, digging up shrimps and crustaceans from the ocean floor which helps to oxygenate the sediment and maintain a healthy ecosystem. Eagle rays are demersal and semi-pelagic rays with a circumglobal distribution where most species can be found near coastlines. Their body size ranges from medium to large (60 to over 200cm disc width) with a wing-like shaped frame. Eagle rays uses their robust jaws and plate like teeth to feed on molluscs and crustaceans, as well as worms and small boney fish. The Arabian Gulf is characterized by extreme fluctuating environment with surface sea temperatures (SSTs) ranges exceeding 20˚C. In summer SSTs reach over 36˚C in the shallow southern basin, and a minimum of 12˚C in winter. The Arabian Gulf also exhibits extreme salinity due to high evaporative rates.

How the UAE can Lose Weight Safely

When dieting and exercising alone are not enough by Cynthia Bou Khalil, Nutritional Consultant, Allurion

The prevalence of obesity is not a new phenomenon but still continues to remain a concern across the world, and the population living in the UAE is no exception to this problem. In 2019, the World Health Survey revealed that 37.2% of Emiratis were obese, with the highest percentage of overweight respondents living in Dubai (52.6%) and the highest percentage of obesity observed in Sharjah (47.1%). In another 2019 survey conducted, it was also seen that 48% of UAE residents are on a mission to lose weight. The survey further indicated that 26% plan to only use exercise to lose weight, while 20% will try to hit their target by changing their diet. However, what happens when diet and exercise are not enough to get you to your desired goals? Losing weight can be challenging, and being such a widely discussed topic, there are several opinions on what people think might be the best way to go about it. As a nutritionist who has been in the field for a long time, I can guarantee you that one size does not fit all when it comes to weight loss. Even the most basic factors, such as age, sex, body type, underlying medical issues, physical activity, genetics, past experiences 68

with dieting or exercise, and even food preferences, can influence a person’s ability to lose weight and maintain it long-term. With this in mind, here are some simple steps to achieving weight loss successfully and safely. Take a close look at your lifestyle - Before you embark on a weight loss program, take a step back, evaluate your current lifestyle and identify behaviours that might have contributed to weight gain in the first place. One way to do this is to keep a diary to log the food you consume and how much physical activity you undertake in a day. This way, you can better understand what habits need to be changed and can think of more concrete ways to make those changes work toward losing weight. Setting realistic goals - Determine how much weight you need to lose to remain healthy and set short-term goals along the way. It’s also important that your goals are realistic and achievable. With lifestyle changes, you should expect gradual, steady weight loss, but not immediate results. Mindful eating - This is where you pay attention to what, how and when you consume food. This in turn ensures that you enjoy the food you eat and feel satisfied with fewer portions, which will help with

maintaining a healthy weight. Combine good healthcare and science - While most weightloss diets are designed to help one lose weight, their efficiency can be affected by a variety of factors, such as not regularly following the set meal plans. Other times, diets prove to be too restrictive and the body is not provided with ample nutrients for proper functionality. Even those who eat healthy, balanced meals with an active lifestyle still suffer from weight issues. This is why I recommend a multilayered approach when advising my patients. Successful weight loss programs should always combine researched solutions with proper guidance from healthcare professionals, such as the Allurion Program. The Allurion Program doesn’t focus solely on weight loss but gives patients the building blocks to rehaul their lifestyles, achieve their desired results, and set them up for long-term success. It is so important to understand that weight loss does not mean one needs to shed more kilos as quickly as possible, but instead choose options that help you lose weight safely whilst building habits that will bring about a positive change in your overall lifestyle.

WILL EXHIBIT HIS WORK IN THE UAE FOR THE FIRST TIME In collaboration with ArtTime (the gallery who previously brought the work of renowned expressionist and street artist JonOne and contemporary art star Babolex to the region), BARNABE’s ‘Broken Mosaic’ exhibition will debut at Foundry in Downtown Dubai on Boulevard Crescent, on the 11th May and will run until July 5th. Already renowned as something of a phenomenon in the urban pop art world, the visual artist known professionally as BARNABE is well on his way to achieving cult-like levels of adoration amongst art lovers, exhibition curators and both amateur and professional collectors. Having exhibited his critically acclaimed work all over the world from Paris, Nice and St Tropez to Los Angeles, Singapore and West Africa - the rising star of the vibrant urban pop art movement will debut his much-coveted pieces at Foundry by EMAAR in a solo exhibition hosted by Art-

Born in Nice in 1994, it was clear from an early age that Pierre-Emmanuel Rome (as he was then known), was a natural creative. It was while studying for his Bachelor’s degree that his passion for contemporary graphic art really began to develop though, as did a fascination with exploring the way in which art can challenge and subvert society while simultaneously enriching it.

Featuring paintings created specifically for the show as well as a selection of original sculptures and collection of small canvases, his solo exhibition ‘Broken Mosaic’ sets out to explore the colour palette of the night and its mystical, hidden qualities, while at the same time calling into question our perception of night as a time devoid of colour and activity.

In 2013 the creation of the symbolic character of BARNABE, whose yellow circular form functions as the visual embodiment of the artists own energy, spontaneity and belief in the joy that can be found in the everyday, proved a pivotal point in his career. Today BARNABE fuses elements of his street-style background with a more traditional means of execution; while he works primarily on canvas, he uses aerosol sprays, acrylic paints and deep black acrylic ink (tools typically associated with

Not only will the exhibition give existing fans the chance to experience BARNABE’s work first hand, ‘Broken Mosaic’ offers a fantastic opportunity for collectors - both new and well established - to purchase pieces of art that are destined to come to financial fruition in the years that follow. BARNABE’s ‘Broken Mosaic’ will launch on May 11th from 6:30pm - 9:30pm at Shop3, Foundry by EMAAR, Boulevard Crescent and will run until July 5th

tips to help female entrepreneurs start their businesses! GET INSPIRED AND MAKE THIS YEAR YOU START YOUR BUSINESS

Are you planning on starting your own business this year? From business consultants and life coaches to small bakery owners and start-up CEOs, to side-hustlers and everything in between, more women are taking the digital lane to achieve entrepreneurial success. And while the old adage ‘take the leap and the net will appear’ can spur entrepreneurs to take action, every woman knows planning and preparation is the key to ensuring success. Firstly, you’re in the right place; in 2021, out of 47 countries surveyed, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor* survey found that the United Arab Emirates has the most supportive environment for entrepreneurship and the highest score for empowering female entrepreneurs to start businesses and become entrepreneurs. For those of you who know you want to start your own business, who have been nurturing an idea and are now researching the tools and methods to make it a reality, you’ll no doubt be considering all the factors and opportunities you’ll need to take advantage of. To help make sure you’ve got the right things on your list and to help you use this year’s International Women’s Day as inspiration to get your journey off to a great start, here are six key actions to consider.

Lifelong Learning Owning and running a successful business requires life-long learning and entrepreneurs must learn to move and adapt to a fast-moving business world, to both survive and capitalise on their early successes. Surround yourself with people and chances to learn and

build your armory of tools to help get your business – and yourself – through any eventuality. Take advantage of the many resources available both online through virtual classes development and learning, as well as in-person sessions, workshops and lectures in the UAE.

Build a diverse support network Many entrepreneurs are driven individuals, but it’s human nature and a very wise business attitude to have a supportive network or team around you. Seeking support, wisdom and a trusted sounding-board to help you through the first steps of running a business can be invaluable, harnessing diverse thinking and lived experience that helps you look at the obstacles you’ll face and overcome in a number of different ways. Take a look at Female Fusion – the UAE’s largest community for women in business and women looking to set up their own business www.femalefusionnetwork.com

Become more agile Now more than ever, and particularly as we emerge from the global pandemic, there’s even more need to be nimble and make critical business decisions with few certainties and with little time. Learn how to think fast and be on your feet, how to avoid getting bogged down and how to go with your instinct, or call on your trusted support team to quickly bounce ideas off before you take the plunge with a tricky issue.

Just ask the difficult questions You won’t know the answers to everything that comes your way, and the fear of that might hold you back from doing the right thing. But an attitude of being

able to ‘just ask the question’ can be a huge asset to keep you moving. As you start to slowly, but surely, build up your knowledge of what your business needs, and the actions you need to take, you’ll grow in confidence and learn that few things need to stand in your way. Seek experts – whether that’s family members, friends, Facebook groups in related topics, or pick up the phone and talk to someone who’s been there and done it already.

Dream real, but dream big too You started your business because you have a big dream that is close to your heart, a vision you want to see realised. But the realities of life may get in the way. Your passion, your story, and how you share it, can have a big impact to inspire others to join you to make it happen. Ask yourself; what motivated you to start this venture in the first place and what you wish to achieve. Have realistic goals, but grand ambitions – and take good people along with you.

Have a strong online presence Your audience, customers and influencers are online, so you need to be there too. Create your own exposure, interact and listen to your customers and build and maintain relationships with those who will buy into your idea and product. It’s easy to get started – take some simple steps to build your online presence with a website, even if it is just one page to get started. Register your business’ domain name and use a website builder tool from companies like GoDaddy, which gives you templates, tools and resources that help you make a great impact and take the pain out of getting your digital platform up and running. Now it’s time to start cultivating and building your digital presence with your website and integrated with an online store and engaging through social media posts, and further developing your website with blogs and digital marketing.
