On The Ground
The Environmental Impact Nursery TM - Blueprint V1 by Rod Holden
In Brief • We have almost run out of time to stabilise the planet and face certain ecological, economic and social systems collapse and mass extinctions by mid-century. • The main tools we have are the capitalist’s and political systems, but the values and ethos that drive them have let humanity and the planet down. We must apply a new ethos to the capitalist system to deliver the required outcomes. • Innovation and growth have been the driving forces in the capitalist’s system, but also have the capacity to deliver the necessary solutions.
The • The need for the right solutions is critical and time sensitive, as too is the need to mobilise vast amounts of capital to deliver these solutions. Environmental • Similar to an innovation’s lab, with a hedge fund approach to risk and mitigation, Environmental Impact Nursery™ brings together institutional capital and Impact The environmental impact investing for the first time. • The model design mitigates greenwashing, mission drift and the main Nursery™ concerns of impact investors while simplifying impact measurement.
• This design also provides a pathway to establish and scale a global standard
for environmental impact investing. BLUEPRINT V1
Introduction
L
et’s be clear - natural capital1 (the environment) underpins the four other key forms of capital,2 and is, therefore, the basis for all ecological, economic and social activity on earth. Without sustainable natural capital, we can’t have a sustainable planet or economy. The main tools that we have to deliver sustainability are the political and capitalist systems. There is nothing wrong with either, as ordered systems, it’s the values and ethos that drive them that’s let humanity (and the planet) down. There is now no time to change the tools, so we must use them differently to develop new solutions. Critically, we need to develop the right solutions.
The capitalist ideals of innovation and exponential growth, over the last 250 years, have helped drive us into the ditch we now find ourselves in. However, the right innovation and growth models are the fundamental tools we need to give ourselves time to stabilise the planet and restructure our culture. This may sound contradictory, but it depends on the approach. In our www.thesolutionsjournal.com | Fall 2020 | Solutions | 89
