elcome again to Caldy today to all of our members, supporters, guests and visitors in this our fourth home game of the season. As previously mentioned, National 1 again is proving to be a real challenge with every game well contested and points proving hard to come by. Last Saturday’s game against Cambridge proved no exception with our boys digging in deep from 15 -0 down just before half time to earn a creditable 22 all draw for the second week running. With a 50% win lose record we could expect to be mid table, but due to the bonus point situation find ourselves lower down the league at present. A great deal of credit must go to Matt and his coaching staff, however, who despite a fairly extensive injury list, continue to produce a competitive squad, introducing new players to first team rugby, now it seems on a regular weekly basis. I think this bodes well for the remainder of the season, when with fewer injuries hopefully we can look forward to climbing the league table. Today we extend a very warm welcome to new opposition from Tonbridge in this their first season in National 1. Tonbridge rugby can trace its proud history back for more than a

hundred years, with two local sides Tonbridge RFC and Old Juddians claiming various degrees of success in cup competitions and progression through the league structure before the turn of the last century. Real progress however seems to have been made since the two clubs merged in 1999 to form Tonbridge Juddians rugby club with success in the London regional leagues eventually culminating in promotion to the full National League structure in 2017. Since then they challenged for promotion to National One, narrowly missing out to Canterbury a couple of years ago, and finally achieving this at the end of last season. Tonbridge have faced a tricky start to the season, but have remained competitive in nearly all of their games having won 1 drawn 1 and lost 4 to date and are only one place behind Caldy in the league. We look forward to meeting their team and officials today and to yet another tough encounter here at Paton Field, as well as to our return visit for the first time to Kent in the New Year. Also today our 2nd team play their fifth game of the league season at home against Lymm. We welcome their team, officials and supporters to Paton Field today for this traditional league encounter. Following on from their unbeaten season last year, Caldy

will be slight favourites today have won all 4 matches this season to lie 2nd. in the league to Fylde who have played one more game. Both Fylde & Caldy have won most of their games by substantial margins to date, and their clash later on this year will be hotly anticipated. As usual there will be other fixtures over the weekend and during the week including colts and girls rugby and we wish all of our teams success in their respective games. Tomorrow our ground will as usual be filled with minis and juniors in addition to the numerous coaching staff, parents and spectators without whom this aspect of our game could not survive, and on which the future of our club depends. I hope that as many of us as possible will turn out this weekend to support our teams, and provide positive encouragement which I know gives our players a real lift in terms of their performance on the field. We now have more extensive spectating facilities on the bank so let’s fill the terraces with noise and banter and good natured support. Let’s hope for reasonable weather today, and if nothing else enjoy the vista from the bank over to the Welsh hills which has to be one of the best in

the league and something which we can all take real enjoyment from. I need to express my thanks again to our ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine, and other volunteers who give of their time in all conditions to produce the wonderful playing surfaces at Caldy Rugby Club that we can all enjoy and be proud of. I would also like to thank all those involved in managing and operating the club during match days and throughout the week including the gate team, catering and bar staff without whom the club could not function. Finally I would like to thank once again all our members, season ticket holders and supporters for your continuing support, as well as our sponsors without whom we could not continue to operate. If you need information on how to join our club, whether as a player or in any other capacity please visit our website for further details. Whatever you do today, enjoy this fantastic game of ours and ensure that come win, lose or draw we all celebrate or commiserate after the game with a smile on our face.

It was really pleasing last week to get all three Sanders Brothers on the pitch together and a well deserved Debut for Joe who has been working really hard on his game over the Summer.

Gareth Davies - Director of Rugby

This week, like every week we have another tough game against a fellow promotion side Tonbridge. This will be a tough game again with a team next to us on the league table who have an excellent fwd pack and a very experience backline.

Player Profile JJ Dickinson

1. Mixed start to the season so far... what’s the mood like within camp? Mood is good! We don’t feel like we have performed at our best yet and we are still right in the mix against some good teams, so hopefully when it all comes together we’ll be in good stead. 2. You’ve missed two games with a pectoral injury, how’s it feeling? How does National one differ from National 2? Pec is on the mend. Not sure I’ve felt fully fit for a game since I was 25 (which is a wee while ago) so no change there.

4. Great to see so many young players involved in the side, who shall we keep an eye on for the future? Feels harsh to single people out as there is a great vibe amongst a young squad at the minute. I think Tom Clarke is doing a terrific job propping up a scrum at his age in Nat 1. Bodes well for his future! 5. How does it feel to be once again linking up with your brother.. it’s been 10+ years since you last played together?

It differs in many ways. More physical, faster, more technical. But I enjoy it much more. It’s great to test ourselves against better outfits.

It’s great. I think I appreciate playing with a good player more than him being my brother. Someone we can rely on to perform each week. Although I can’t lie, we have enjoyed talking tactics and line outs and the boring bits that we enjoy off the field.

3. Expectations for the rest of the season?

QUICKFIRE 3

I expect us to kick on. As we get injuries coming back I hope for us to find some form. We also tend to do ok in the wet and windy months with some gritty performances. Would hope to move up the table by Christmas, but it’s going to be hard work every week.

Bus trip or home court session? Always bus trip Last minute winner or 50 point win? Last minute winner! “Come dine with me”, which 3 lads are you inviting to join you? Wouldn’t matter, none of them are in my league in the kitchen.

Match Report Caldy 27 v Chinnor 27 No wind, no rain, and a playing surface as good as any in the country set the scene for this Caldy versus Chinnor clash in National One. 4th placed Chinnor had started the season with 3 wins out of 4 and with impressive pre-season recruitment had established a formidable playing squad. In his pre match address to Caldy’s lunch guests, Caldy Head Coach Matt Cairns acknowledged that this would probably be Caldy’s toughest game to date this season. How right he was! After 20 minutes of this pulsating contest the runaway train that was Chinnor RFC, looked to have driven Caldy completely off the rails. The 19 -3 lead, courtesy of three well taken trys by winger Seb Scott, and front row forwards Robin Hardwick and Cameron Terry, was built on the strength and experience of the Chinnor pack. Led by Chinnor’s recent recruits in the form of giant prop Soane Tongauiha and rampaging No 8 Frederick Tuliagi, the Chinnor pack was proving a handful for Caldy. It looked bleak for the home side but then light appeared at the end of the tunnel. It was the Caldy bullet train coming in the opposite direction. Centre Mike Barlow led the recovery with a well taken score from a driven lineout and then the express pace of Caldy’s Nick Royle out flanked the Chinnor defence with the speedster’s trademark kick and chase. Two successful conversions from Ben Jones and Caldy were suddenly within two points of Chinnor at 17-19. Game on! Caldy started the second half with an outstanding break by Nyle Davidson supported by Mike Barlow putting Royle in for his second to give a resurgent Caldy a deserved 24-19 lead. Caldy had the opportunity to score their bonus point try after a penalty attempt by Ben Jones rebounded off the post but alert defence by Chinnor

snuffed out the danger and the visitors launched an attack of their own. It took some great scramble defence by Caldy to keep the counter attack by the visitors at bay until an infringement at a lineout handed possession back to Chinnor who capitalised through a straightforward transfer to the wing and a try in the corner. With at least 20 minutes of game time still to go the 24-24 score line never looked like being the final result and the breathless action just kept on coming. The departure of the former Premiership star Tongauiha on 65 minutes gave Caldy some respite in the scrums and with the game now being played end to end, the fitter home side looked the more likely winners, but Chinnor were resilient and there was no easy way through their defensive line. 5 minutes to go and a Nick Royle scrag tackle was adjudged to have been a high tackle by the assistant referee. Pretorious made no mistake with the penalty and the visitors looked to have snatched it from Caldy. However, with less than two minutes to go a Chinnor infringement gave Caldy a long-range opportunity to level the game. An assured Ben Jones stepped up to square the game at 27 apiece. This was an impressive comeback by a Caldy side who despite being without four of their biggest ball carriers found their way back into a game where it looked likely they would be bulldozed to a heavy defeat. At 19-3 down within 15 minutes and being pummelled by the power of the visiting pack it would have been easy for the team to panic or crumble or both, but they were unflinching. On another day their impressive composure and gritty determination would have given them a deserved win but in the end a draw was probably a reasonable result given such an unpromising start.
