President’s Welcome

Graham Armitage

A

very warm welcome again to all of our members, supporters, guests and visitors today as we head towards the business end of another momentous season for Caldy Rugby Club.

match of the day, possibly first against second, and I would therefore like to ask as many Caldy supporters to make the trip and actively support the club in what may be a defining moment this season.

Last Saturday we had a break from rugby, following a tough trip to Leeds the week before. Caldy playing with the strong wind at their backs in the first half met stiff resistance from a lively Leeds team who defended well, ending up only 8 points adrift at half time. This did not appear to be enough of a lead considering the elements, but with a change of tactics, a tremendous forward effort in the second half led by the redoubtable Sam Dickinson ensured that Caldy finished the game 28 points to 13 to the good gaining a vital try bonus point in the process. Credit must also be given to the Caldy Minis who turned up on tour with at least 4 coach loads of players, coaches and parents and whose presence and vocal support were invaluable on the occasion. I’m sure that the tour, which included games the following morning at the same venue, was as enjoyable as it appeared for all of the adults and children concerned.

Today we extend a very warm welcome to Taunton RFC, their President Dick Macey and colleagues who gave us such a welcome reception when we visited Somerset for our inaugural meeting last autumn. Taunton are currently mid table in the league after a good season to date, having been promoted to National 1 last season as the winners of League 2 South. The away fixture between the teams ended in a 36-30 win for Caldy, although with Taunton in front at half time, Caldy had to produce a trademark second half performance to win the game. On the basis of form to date today’s game will start with the home team as favourites, but, with such dangerous opponents, Caldy will need to be on their mettle in order to maintain their winning streak. Taunton will no doubt be extremely competitive attempting to finish the season in style, so again we are likely to be treated to another great game of rugby whatever happens at Paton Field today.

Caldy, as a result of the win at Leeds, remain at the top of the league, 2 points ahead of Rosslyn Park who have a game in hand. With the top six sides also winning with bonus points however, with 5 games to go there is still all to play for with several key fixtures against a number of these clubs still to come. Caldy’s visit to Rosslyn Park next weekend will almost certainly be the

Taunton can trace their history back to 1875, playing local level rugby before moving to Priory Park in the mid 1930’s which was to remain their home until after the turn of this century. In 2001 they moved to Hyde Park their current venue next to the M5 developing a new state of the art facility and clubhouse in subsequent years now renamed as Veritas Park. At the inception of the

President’s Welcome - Continued leagues around 1990 Taunton were playing their rugby in the south west leagues at community rugby level, and gradually worked their way up through the league structure gaining several promotions between 2000 and 2010 to gain National League 2 South status which they maintained for the next decade. In the 2019/20 season they gained promotion to National 1 Level 3 status, their highest ever ranking in the rugby hierarchy, and have made a positive start this season currently in 9th.place. Our 2nd team had no game last week but were successful the week before against Fylde, one of their nearest rivals, running out worthy winners with a 40- 19 scoreline. They are scheduled to play Sandbach away today and still sit proudly at the top of their league with an unbeaten record this season and games in hand over their nearest rivals. They will obviously be looking to extend their winning record later today. Congratulations again to the squad and coaches on their perfect season to date, with an unbeaten record that now trails back to the season before last, quite an achievement. I hope that as many of us as possible will turn out this weekend to support our teams, and provide the vocal support which I know gives our players a real lift in terms of their performance on the field. We now have more extensive spectating facilities on the bank so let’s get out there, get behind our teams and hopefully, given reasonable weather, enjoy the spectacle that matchday brings. Whilst Covid is no longer at the top of the agenda and foremost in our minds at present, care should still be taken particularly indoors where this virus is more easily transmissible. With rising covid rates we continue to recommend taking precautionary measures, although of course this is no longer mandatory; there is no substitute for regular breaks outdoors and getting a breath of fresh air wherever possible. On our part the club

www.caldyrugbyclub.com

will endeavour to make indoor spaces as safe as possible whilst hopefully still providing an enjoyable atmosphere. You will no doubt be aware that our planning application for a much needed new clubhouse facility is still being considered by the Local Authority, details of which are shown on our website. We are anticipating feedback with regard to our application shortly, although this is bound to be a somewhat lengthy process. Approaching our centenary we hope that our bid to upgrade and update our facilities, bringing them into the twenty first century, will not fall on deaf ears, and in the event of a successful result will enable us to leave a suitable legacy for future generations. I wish to express my thanks again to our ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine, and other volunteers who give of their time in all conditions to produce the wonderful playing surfaces at Caldy Rugby Club that we can all enjoy and be proud of. I would also like to thank all those involved in managing and operating the club during match days and throughout the week including the gate team, catering and bar staff without whom the club could not function. Finally I would like to thank once again all our members, season ticket holders and supporters for your continuing support, as well as our sponsors without whom we could not continue to operate. If you need information on how to join our club, whether as a player or in any other capacity please visit our website for further details. Whatever you do today, stay safe and most of all, whatever the result enjoy your rugby, Graham Armitage

Player Profile Callum Ridgway

1. Firstly Callum, congratulations! 50 appearances for your boyhood club! How nice was it to get that recognition last time out against Leeds? It’s a fantastic feeling being able to hit a milestone appearance for any club let alone your boyhood club, so it was a really special moment for me. Being able to run out on the pitch with the lads last Saturday, and to walk away with another 5 pointer was just the icing on the cake. 2. This is the first season where you have had a run in the starting side and have been one of our standout players, do you think the game time has improved your overall game? Or something else maybe? Being able to get game time week in week out has been massively important for me in improving my game. In years past, I have been a player on the fringe of the 1st XV and that can be quite tough, especially when you aren’t getting much game time. I suppose this year I was able to take my opportunity when it came round and made the most of it. 3. Our away form is the best in the league, what do you put this down to? No matter where we have to go, or how early we have to get up, you can always guarantee that there will be a really positive

www.caldyrugbyclub.com

vibe on an away trip. The coaches do a really good job with prep for each game, making sure we are as ready as we can be for each one be it home or away. 4. 5 games to go. It’s extremely tight. How’s the mood in camp? Are there any nerves knocking about? We are just enjoying each moment as it comes. Every Saturday is just another chance for us to go out there and put on a top performance, I don’t see why that should change. 5. Looking at today, what can we expect from Taunton? Despite what their league position might suggest, they are a really solid side with some big runners and so we cannot underestimate their attacking ability. We will need to focus for the entire 80 minutes to come away with a positive result.

QUICKFIRE 3 Bus trip or home court session? Bus trip. Last minute winner or 50 point win? Last minute winner. “Come dine with me”, which 3 lads are you inviting to join you? Ollie Hearn, Ben Jones, Joe Murray.
