elcome again to Caldy today to all of our members, supporters, guests and visitors in this our sixth home game of the season. Last Saturday our first team squad had another early start making the long journey south once again to Taunton and despite the coach trip returned home victorious with 5 more points in the bag, despite being 10 points adrift at half time. Congratulations to Gareth, Matt and Richard for some inspiring leadership and tactical substitutions using the whole of the squad in order to turn things around after some tricky early refereeing decisions. There are sterner tests to come including this weekend, but with the current squad combining so well and certain players about to return from longer term injury, this can only auger well for the remainder of the season. Today we extend a very warm welcome to Rosslyn Park, their team and officials for this their third visit to Paton Field. Park have made an impressive start to the season, having won 9 and lost 1 to date with an impressive points difference and bonus point tally. Last week they played Blackheath at home, winning substantially to move them within striking distance of Cinderford at the top of the league table. The 4 previous encounters between Park

and Caldy in National 1 have seen the honours shared with the home side winning on each occasion. Park will start today as firm favourites on the basis of their recent performances but with Caldy having home advantage as they say there is everything to play for. One thing is certain; there will be a fantastic game of rugby on offer whatever happens at Paton Field today. Rosslyn Park have a rich history having I’m told been formed in 1879 as the rugby section of Hampstead Cricket Club, before changing their name a number of years later to Rosslyn Park Football Club. They played top flight rugby for almost a century before the relatively recent advent of league rugby. They have run their famous schools 7’s tournament continuously since 1939, and produced a number of international players, including Andy Ripley who will go down as the fastest No. 8 I can remember seeing play in the white red rose shirt. They also benefited from the services of at least one Caldy player in Rod Johnstone, our former President who played at the Rock for several years in the 1950’s before heading back north. Unfortunately Rod is no longer with us, but at least he had the opportunity a few years ago of seeing his two former clubs play each other. Park may have slipped out of major top class rugby in recent times, but are now showing signs of fulfilling their vision to return to the second tier of

national rugby which, if they continue to produce their performances to date, will be well deserved. Our 2nd team are also at home today against Sandbach and we welcome their team, officials and supporters to Paton Field this weekend for another league encounter. With a top of the table encounter last weekend, Caldy narrowly beat Fylde away with a hard fought 19 -17 win to preserve their unbeaten record this season and will obviously be looking to extend this record further later today. Congratulations to the squad and coaches on their perfect season to date. There were also the usual fixtures last weekend with colts, juniors and minis all involved. At the time of going to press I unfortunately don’t have any further input on girls or touch rugby or results in any of these sections. Anybody interested in joining any of our community club sections should contact the club or members of the coaching staff to join in the Caldy experience. The players, parents and spectators at these levels are the lifeblood of this club on which the future of Caldy rugby continues to depend. I hope that as many of us as possible will turn out this weekend to support our teams, and provide positive encouragement which I know gives our players a real lift in terms of their performance on the field. We now have more extensive

spectating facilities on the bank so let’s fill the terraces with noise, banter and good natured support and hopefully, given reasonable weather, enjoy the spectacle that matchday brings. I wish to express my thanks again to our ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine, and other volunteers who give of their time in all conditions to produce the wonderful playing surfaces at Caldy Rugby Club that we can all enjoy and be proud of. I would also like to thank all those involved in managing and operating the club during match days and throughout the week including the gate team, catering and bar staff without whom the club could not function. Finally I would like to thank once again all our members, season ticket holders and supporters for your continuing support, as well as our sponsors without whom we could not continue to operate. Firstly, we’re unbeaten in 8 games now, massive win last week away in Taunton! What do you put this good form down to?

You’ve scored 86 points this season, your right foot is working well! You obviously put the hours in during the week?

Team togetherness and a belief that we can do a job regardless of the situation we find ourselves in.

Yeah the right foot works just fine thanks However being left footed I think you’ll be more interested in that one! Yeah most of the work is in pre-season and then it’s just about keeping it ticking over during the season.

Big game this weekend against Rosslyn Park, what can we expect from them? Yeah they look to be a very good well sorted team, we expect a solid set piece and some strong midfield runners. It will be a good test and I’m sure the weather will play a role too! We have 4 big games leading up to Christmas, has there been discussions about taking a certain amount of points from those games to lead into the new year? I wouldn’t say so. We feel we can gain a positive result in every fixture, so it is a matter of concentrating on the next game each week.

Lastly, do you have any superstitions on match day? I pack my bag the night before, then re-pack it again in the morning! That’s about it.

Match Report Taunton 31 v Caldy 36 To say a game is of two halves is a cliché but it does sum up how the game was played. In the first half Taunton dominated the play and were awarded several penalties against a determined Caldy Defence. They went into the lead and increased it with a penalty. However, as in previous matches, Caldy were never out of it. Two Tries by Adam Aigbokhae from rolling Mauls brought them back into the game leaving the score at half time Taunton 24 – Caldy 12.

Next week 27th November, Rosslyn Park are at Caldy, they are the form team in the league and probably the favourites for promotion, but Caldy have only lost 2 games. Hopefully, the crowd will get behind the Home team for another famous win.

In the second half, Caldy came out and immediately went onto the front foot which resulted in Taunton giving away penalties. From another line out in the Taunton 22, Olly Hearn went over for a try. A further penalty resulting in a line out on the Taunton line resulted in J.J.Dickinson going in off another rolling maul. Caldy were dominating the game aided by the number of penalties awarded against the defending side and from another line out the ball was moved to Ezra Hinchcliffe, who gave a reverse Pass to Joe Murray to score under the posts. A penalty by Ben Jones finished off the scoring for Caldy who were now leading 36-24. Unfortunately, Taunton scored with the last play of the game which gave them 2
