elcome again to Caldy today to all of our members, supporters, guests and visitors in this our seventh home game of the season. Last Saturday our first team squad had another early start making the long journey south once again to Bishop Stortford and despite the coach trip returned home victorious with 5 more points in the bag, having been 21 points to 3 at an early stage of the game. In good dry sunny but blustery conditions the team made a blistering start with 21 points on the board at virtually a point a minute, but withstood a Stortford comeback before and after half time before eventually running out 31 -20 winners at full time. There are sterner tests to come including this weekend, but with the current squad playing so well and certain players about to return from longer term injury, this continues to auger well for the remainder of the season. Today we extend a very warm welcome to Rams RFC, their team and officials for this their first visit to Paton Field. Rams have made a good start to the season, having won 7 and lost 3 to date with a similar points difference and bonus point tally to ourselves. Last week they played Blackheath at home, losing rather surprisingly, but are well placed in the league, 2 points behind Caldy but with a game in hand. On the basis

of form this season the result of today’s game is hard to predict but with similar records and Caldy having home advantage as they say there is everything to play for. One thing is certain, despite Storm Barra and its aftermath, there will be yet another fantastic game of rugby on offer whatever happens at Paton Field today. Rams have a similar history to ourselves having been formed in 1924 as Old Redingensians RFC, the old boys of Reading School, before changing their name eventually to Rams RFC a few years ago. Again similar to Caldy, for much of their history they played rugby at a fairly local level before the advent of the league systems, and were still playing relatively lower league rugby until the turn of the century. The introduction of mini and junior rugby some years earlier eventually paid off and the club started to progress to the higher echelons of the league culminating in promotion to National League 1 at the end of the 2019/20 season. At the end of their first season at this level earlier this year they finished a very creditable 2nd in the league and were strongly tipped to challenge for the title this season, with the possibility of promotion to the Championship on the horizon. With less than half the season completed, Rams may still a have a shot at achieving this ambition, possibly dependent on the number of teams to be promoted which should be decided early next

year. We’ll all have a better idea of where both we and they stand later on today. Our 2nd team are also at home today against Sedgley Park and we welcome their team, officials and supporters to Paton Field this weekend for another league encounter. With another tough fixture last weekend, Caldy narrowly beat 3rd. placed Chester away with a hard fought 12 -5 win to preserve their unbeaten record this season and will obviously be looking to extend this further later today. Congratulations to the squad and coaches on their perfect season to date. There were also various fixtures and games last week in the Club’s community section some of which were affected by poor weather conditions last weekend. Anybody interested in joining any of our community club sections should contact the club or members of the coaching staff to join in the Caldy experience. The players, parents and spectators at these levels are the lifeblood of this club on which the future of Caldy rugby continues to depend. I hope that as many of us as possible will turn out this weekend to support our teams, and provide positive encouragement which I know gives our players a real lift in terms of their performance on the field. We now have more extensive

spectating facilities on the bank so let’s fill the terraces with noise, banter and good natured support and hopefully, given reasonable weather, enjoy the spectacle that matchday brings. I wish to express my thanks again to our ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine, and other volunteers who give of their time in all conditions to produce the wonderful playing surfaces at Caldy Rugby Club that we can all enjoy and be proud of. I would also like to thank all those involved in managing and operating the club during match days and throughout the week including the gate team, catering and bar staff without whom the club could not function. Finally I would like to thank once again all our members, season ticket holders and supporters for your continuing support, as well as our sponsors without whom we could not continue to operate. If you need information on how to join our club, whether as a player or in any other capacity please visit our website for further details. Whatever you do today enjoy your rugby, and let’s all catch up afterwards in the clubhouse in celebration of this fantastic game of ours.

Player Profile Joe Murray

After losing at home to Rosslyn two weeks ago, how good was it to get back on the horse with a big away win last week in Bishops Stortford? Great bounce-back from the lads, disappointing to lose to Rosslyn and I think we left a few points out there but confidence that we can more than compete at the top of the table. A lot of trust in what the coaches are saying and how we want to play too. You’re a new signing this season from Wirral, how have you found the difference in leagues? Big step up? Definitely a faster pace and more structure to the game but really enjoying the challenge and playing at this level. Box kick ‘em to death up the ‘tics come onnn. You’ve played with most of the lads at Caldy while playing for Cheshire, are you enjoying being a part of the club? Lads have been superb and everyone at the club has been very welcoming. Great atmosphere apart from having to do 2 initiations.

Last home game before Christmas, big crowd expected, what can we expect from Rams this weekend? Every team in this league is competitive so we know we’ll have to be on form to get the W. We’ve talked about how we want to play and hopefully we’ll put on a performance for the home crowd to enjoy. Our last game of the season is the derby at Heywood Road vs Sale FC. Is there eyes beyond this weekend on that massive fixture? It’s one game at a time but there’s no denying we’ll want to come away winners in a local derby and Sale are going well. All new signings need an initiation, talk me through it? What was your chosen song? Very simple - can, naked, can, sing. If there’s more than one then its a race which was a learning curve for me. Song to finish, I bottled it on bus one so brought the 6 string for the next bus and knocked out some Reggie Dwight - Rocketman

Match Report Bishop’s Stortford 20 v Caldy 31 As they have many times this season, Caldy started quickly after the 223-mile coach trip to Hertfordshire. A fluid Caldy side, were 14 points up within the opening 10 minutes. They were finding holes in the home sides defence on every occasion they attacked. Lucas Titherington scored the opener after he sliced through a gaping hole in midfield from an Ezra Hinchliffe assist. Prop, Nathan Rushton, scored the second after finding another sizeable hole in midfield ten yards out, both duly converted by the ever-dependable Ben Jones. The home side managed to reply quickly with 3 points from the boot of Tom Walker, after pressure on the restart kick forced a penalty. The relief was relatively short-lived though, when captain, Josiah Dickinson added a third converted try on 20 minutes, following a scrum penalty against Stortford. The home pack held out a driving maul from the resulting lineout, but the outside defence was not as strong and JJ took full advantage taking an inside ball to dance his way over from 5 yards, Jones again converting. The momentum of the game shifted after the 3rd try was scored. Loose phase play and copious handling errors from the ‘Ravers’ allowed the home side back into the game. Two good lineout mauls brought two

tries for hooker, Alex Rayment on 30 and 39 minutes. Walker converted the first from the touchline but couldn’t quite repeat the feat for the second. 21-15 Half Time. The home side started the second period strongly and had the better of early exchanges but were unable to break down a fantastic and reliable Caldy defence. Caldy began to suffocate the home side at both scrum and lineout, which led to multiple penalty infringements. A penalty kicked deep into enemy lines, brought about our Bonus Point try. A good set-up by the forwards at maul time, allowed the poacher, inside centre, Mike Barlow to latch on at the back of the maul and secure our bonus point; his 4th try of the season. Caldy clicked into next gear following the 4th and moved out of sight with a fifth try after 74 minutes from yet another 5-metre lineout. A scripted set piece move and quick ball allowed hooker, Oliver Hearn to run in untouched out wide which started the celebrations early. Stortford showed typical character by fighting their way back into opposition territory and were rewarded with a consolation try at the death to Chris Smith. Another fantastic win on the road moves the ‘Ravers’ up to 5th in table after 12 games. Caldy welcome the Reading-based ‘Rams’ to Paton Field this weekend.
