President’s Welcome
Graham Armitage
A
very warm welcome again to all of our members, supporters, guests and visitors today as we head towards the final part of another fantastic season for Caldy Rugby Club. Last Saturday we had another long away trip away to Tonbridge Juddians and received a very warm welcome from our hosts on the day. This was all the more remarkable considering that this was our first ever visit to this part of Kent, and was particularly enjoyable given the spring like weather that we were able to enjoy on the day. Tonbridge are having a tough inaugural season in National 1, and currently prop up the remainder of the league. Whilst they showed commendable spirit in scoring 3 converted tries, they were no match for Caldy, who, despite not playing at their best, were able to notch up 6 tries in reply and run out comfortable winners by 21 points to 40. The most notable score came from the evergreen Nick Royle who notched up his 300th. National League try, a tremendous achievement at this level of rugby. Further scores included a well taken Ben Jones try, who broke several tackles in the process, which when added to his conversion tally, has taken him clear at the top of the National 1 leading scorers table. Even more remarkably, the win took Caldy to the top of the league with former leaders Rosslyn Park having a blank fixture last Saturday. With www.caldyrugbyclub.com
Sale, Cinderford, Cambridge and Rams all winning however, with 7 games to go there is still all to play for with several key fixtures against a number of the top six clubs still to come. If Rosslyn Park slip up this week at Cinderford our fate could be in our own hands, a tremendous achievement, and one that our coaches and players can be truly proud of whatever the outcome. Today we extend a very warm welcome to Plymouth Albion RFC, who are currently thirteenth in the league after a relatively difficult season to date. The away fixture between the teams last autumn ended in a 26-7 win for Caldy, with probably one of our best tries of the season taking us well clear by the end of the game. On the basis of form to date today’s game is a potential banana skin for the home team who will need to retain their concentration and composure in order to maintain their winning streak. Plymouth will no doubt be extremely competitive in search of points to ensure their league status, so yet again there is another fantastic game of rugby in prospect whatever happens at Paton Field today. Plymouth can trace their famous history back to 1876, playing initially at Devonport Park. In the early years they amalgamated with other clubs changing their name eventually to Plymouth Albion and played briefly at Home Park now the home of Plymouth Argyle FC. In the 1890’s they occasionally had crowds of several thousands and in 1905 entertained the All Blacks, losing 1

President’s Welcome - Continued by 21 points to 3 in front of 19,000 spectators. Between 1901 and 1912 the club boasted 10 international players and regularly played famous clubs in both England and Wales before and between both world wars. They continued playing top class rugby after 1945 up to the advent of the league structures in the late 1980’s. At the inception of the leagues Albion were playing their rugby at Courage League 3, but went through a difficult period in 1990’s and suffered several relegations before bouncing back at the turn of the century with consecutive promotions. In 2002 the club attained Level 2 status in the leagues and moved to their present site at Brickfields playing their first game there against our good friends from Otley. They maintained Level 2 ( Championship ) status for 13 years before being relegated in 2015 to National 1 rugby, a position that they have retained ever since. They finished second in the league in the 2016 -17 season just missing out on promotion. Our 2nd team had no game last week but are scheduled to play Rossendale today. The team still sit proudly at the top of their league with an unbeaten record this season and games in hand over their nearest rivals and will obviously be looking to extend their winning record later today. Congratulations again to the squad and coaches on their perfect season to date, with an unbeaten record that now trails back to the season before last, quite an achievement. I hope that as many of us as possible will turn out this weekend to support our teams, and provide positive encouragement which I know gives our players a real lift in terms of their performance on the field. We now have more extensive spectating facilities on the bank so let’s get out there, get

behind our team and hopefully, given reasonable weather, enjoy the spectacle that matchday brings. Whilst Covid is no longer at the top of the agenda and foremost in our minds at present, care should still be taken particularly indoors where this virus is more easily transmittable. We continue to recommend taking precautionary measures, although of course this is no longer mandatory; there is no substitute for regular breaks outdoors and getting a breath of fresh air wherever possible. On our part the club will endeavour to make indoor spaces as safe as possible whilst hopefully still providing an enjoyable atmosphere. I wish to express my thanks again to our ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine, and other volunteers who give of their time in all conditions to produce the wonderful playing surfaces at Caldy Rugby Club that we can all enjoy and be proud of. I would also like to thank all those involved in managing and operating the club during match days and throughout the week including the gate team, catering and bar staff without whom the club could not function. Finally I would like to thank once again all our members, season ticket holders and supporters for your continuing support, as well as our sponsors without whom we could not continue to operate. If you need information on how to join our club, whether as a player or in any other capacity please visit our website for further details. Whatever you do today we hope you enjoy your rugby and your time with us at Caldy Rugby Club, Graham Armitage

we had a long trip to Tonbridge who although are sitting bottom of the table we knew would put up a tough test as they are scrapping for any points they can get. We started the game well and scored some great tries, especially Nick
Plymouth will offer a much different challenge this week and they are also not where they would expect to be in the league, so will be fighting for everything they can get. We did win down there earlier in the season, which was one
Royle’s, which was definitely a contender for try
of our best away games so far and we will be
of the season. This was also Royleys 300th try
hoping for another one like that today.

1. We’re top of the tree. First point, how have we got there? Second point, how good does it feel to be mixing it at the top of National one? Good question. I’m not sure anyone would have believed you after our first two games and sitting bottom. There isn’t much to choose between the top and bottom teams in this league with no easy games, it’s about getting your detail right each week for who you’re coming up against. We’ve adapted our style of play throughout the season and everyone buys into how we want to defend. I haven’t been involved with coaches who put so much time and effort into the detail for specific teams, especially around set piece. It feels brilliant and we haven’t finished the job just yet, but more importantly I think this squad believes this is where we should be which is maybe what we’ve lacked in previous campaigns in Nat 1. 2. You’ve been an ever present this season, how nice is that personally after having a few injury ravaged seasons? It definitely makes you appreciate it more when you’ve had to come back from some long lay offs as I have. I’ve missed staggy, my partner in crime, but it’s been great. Hopefully, being able to contribute to the team each week. I don’t think I’ve ever played so many minutes in one season!
www.caldyrugbyclub.com
3. Teams will look at our away form and think.. “these boys don’t mind travelling”.. what is the secret to our brilliant away form? I’d love to say it’s Ben Jones’ pre match quiz and tiffin but that’s probably not the case. Difficult one to put your finger on, we have the same routine each trip to go through our plans which helps and the boys enjoy spending time with each other. A bus trip home after a 5 pointer makes it even sweeter. 4. Has there been a standout moment for you this season where you’ve thought.. this is great to be a part of? The win against Sale at Christmas was one to stop and take in for me, a great day out. Hopefully we’re not quite done yet and got some more memories to make this season.
QUICKFIRE 3 Bus trip or home court session? Bus trip but we are overdue a changing room court session. Last minute winner or 50 point win? Last minute winner. “Come dine with me”, which 3 lads are you inviting to join you? I would have to choose the Thursday club - JJ, Gerrard and Jones. We’ve got through some cheesy garlic bread this season.

Match Report Tonbridge Juddians 21 v Caldy 40
T
his contest at the very hospitable Tonbridge Juddians club in Kent ended up with Caldy doing enough to win without the intensity of recent weeks. After a succession of very difficult fixtures, it was perhaps understandable that Caldy were not quite on top form, but they did intermittently show flashes of their best rugby as they notched up 6 tries, but the moment Caldy dropped their levels TJs pounced scoring three tries of their own. On a firm pitch in Spring like conditions, Caldy started the scoring after a 40-metre midfield break by JJ Dickinson put in Dave Jones for a try under the posts. Caldy were up and running. Caldy’s second score was the try of the day. 20+ phases of complete rugby showed the Wirral side at their best with centre Lucas Titherington grabbing his first of two tries. When the evergreen Nick Royle picked up a difficult pass from knee height to scoot over for Caldy’s third of the day after only 20 minutes it looked as though this could be one way traffic. However, this 300th national league try by the National League’s all-time record try scorer jolted Tonbridge Juddians into life. Two tries from the hosts made a contest of it and Caldy were made to work for their bonus point win. Further scores by Elliot Gourlay, Lucas Titherington and the excellent Ben Jones finally seeing Caldy home by 40 points to 21.
there were some eye-catching performances. Captain JJ Dickinson relished the fast track and carried with pace. Dave Jones brought aggression and intensity to an unfamiliar stint in the second row and at outside centre Mike Cartmill gave an assured performance. The Rugby Paper gave its star man rating to JJ Dickinson, but he must have been run very close by Ben Jones who produced another first-class performance from the tee and around the pitch. The Ravers’ quiz master, tiffin baker and music maker is now 32 points clear at the top of the National 1 scoring charts. This Saturday 5th March Plymouth Albion visit Paton Field. Albion who are one the big clubs in National 1 find themselves in an unfamiliar position towards the bottom of the table and will be keen to avenge their earlier home defeat by Caldy and pick up some points on the road to move towards mid table safety. The match reverts to a 3 pm kick off time and Caldy will need a large and vociferous home support to fire up their Spring campaign at the business end of the National 1 league season.
Caldy did what they needed to without being quite at their normal standards but despite this
