President’s Welcome
Graham Armitage
W
elcome again to Caldy today to all of our members, supporters, guests and visitors in this our fifth home game of the season. Last weekend we had a break from rugby, but two weeks ago our first team squad made the long journey south to Plymouth starting at 6 a.m. and arriving over 7 hours later, not an ideal method of preparation one would have thought for a difficult away game. However the boys made light of this, playing their way into the game initially and by half time had scored two good tries to lead by 12 points to 7. The second half was basically one way traffic with Caldy in control, scoring two further spectacular tries and ending up worthy 26-7 bonus point winners. Congratulations to Gareth, Matt, Richard and the squad on possibly their most complete performance of the season so far with both forwards and backs contributing in full to the try scoring tally. Their reward was a good night out in Plymouth which of course, based on the back of a good away win, was celebrated in some style if not sobriety. There are some stern tests to come but with various players about to return from longer term injury this can only bolster a squad whose performances seem to improve with each outing. Today we extend a very warm welcome to
Leeds Tykes, their team and officials for their first visit to Paton Field in this their first season in National 1. Leeds, who were relegated from the Championship last season, have faced a tricky start to the season, but have remained competitive in nearly all of their games, having won 2 and lost 6 to date. Last week they played Blackheath at home, gaining a hard earned victory to move them away from the foot of the league table. This is our first league encounter with Leeds, who have played much of their league rugby at a higher level, and the match will no doubt prove another tough encounter and test of the progress Caldy have made over recent years. Leeds are a team we know little about, having originally formed as part of the amalgamation of Headingly and Roundhay rugby clubs, both with long histories and Headingly in particular playing top level rugby before the formations of the league systems back in the 1990’s. Headingly could boast a number of international figures in their ranks including Ian McGeechan who needs no introduction, and his centre partner at the time, Andy Maxwell who of course started his rugby career here at Caldy. Andy went on to play for England against Australia winning a number of international caps before serious injury against France ended his international career.

President’s Welcome - Continued Our 2nd team are also at home today against Rossendale and we welcome their team, officials and supporters to Paton Field this weekend for another league encounter. With a break last weekend, Caldy beat Kirby Lonsdale on their last outing with a tremendous win away two weeks ago 45 -17 to preserve their unbeaten record this season and will obviously be looking to extend this record further later today. There were fixtures last weekend with the junior colts beating Rochdale and the minis and juniors taking part in games against mainly Anselmians and Wirral at U16’s level. The girls team had fixtures against Wirral and Wrexham and are looking for additional players to increase their numbers. Anybody interested in joining any of these sections please contact the club or members of the coaching staff to join in the Caldy experience. The players, parents and spectators at these levels are the lifeblood of this club and on which the future of Caldy rugby continues to depend. We also had a visit recently from the RFU President, Jeff Blackett and his wife who were completing a 150 mile sponsored walk in aid of the Injured Players Fund. An extremely soggy day unfortunately to set off from Caldy on this leg of their walk but we wish them well in their fund raising efforts for this very worthy cause. I hope that as many of us as possible will turn out this weekend to support our teams, and provide positive encouragement which I know
gives our players a real lift in terms of their performance on the field. We now have more extensive spectating facilities on the bank so let’s fill the terraces with noise, banter and good natured support and hopefully, given reasonable weather, enjoy the spectacle that matchday brings. I need to express my thanks again to our ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine, and other volunteers who give of their time in all conditions to produce the wonderful playing surfaces at Caldy Rugby Club that we can all enjoy and be proud of. I would also like to thank all those involved in managing and operating the club during match days and throughout the week including the gate team, catering and bar staff without whom the club could not function. Finally I would like to thank once again all our members, season ticket holders and supporters for your continuing support, as well as our sponsors without whom we could not continue to operate. If you need information on how to join our club, whether as a player or in any other capacity please visit our website for further details. Whatever you do today, enjoy this fantastic game of ours and ensure that come win, lose or draw we all celebrate afterwards over a few pints with a broad smile on our face.

Player Profile Michael Barlow
1. Great win down in Plymouth, unbeaten in 6 games Home and Away, what’s the mood like within camp? Camp is a great place to be at the minute, with some new combinations and players it’s starting to click as you can see with the results. I think we’re finally starting to put the pieces together which has led to the run were on. 2. What do you put this good run of form down to? Because there has been 30+ players used in the first team squad this season? It’s everyone understanding their role within the squad, the lads that have come into the team due to injuries know how we want to play and what we need from each individual to get the right outcome. It’s testament to the coaching group doing a great job having everyone ready to go when called upon. 3. You’ve not missed one minute of rugby this year for Caldy, how good does that feel to be playing regularly? How’s the body holding up? Let’s be honest for players and supporters it’s amazing just to have rugby back on Saturdays but yes playing every minute tells me I’m doing my job well or the fact that there’s so many injuries the coaches are scraping the barrel…body is in one piece so I’ll definitely take that.
4. Expectations for the rest of the season? For us a squad quite cliche but just keep building week by week as we’ve seen for the last 6. The results will take care of itself if we keep doing what we set out to do and at 80 mins on a Saturday afternoon we’ll be where we need to be. 5. You are now seen by Coaches and Players as a leader amongst the squad, would that be correct? If so, is this something you’ve worked on, or does it come naturally to you? It’s been something I’ve worked on, with the loss of a few lads due to injuries and my dancing partner Gav leaving we’ve got some young guns around me in the back line. If I can impart my wisdom (little I have) on them it makes my job easier essentially and they can profit by scoring all the tries. 6. 62 appearances for Caldy in 3 full seasons, you’ve been an ever present in the 1st team squad, is the aim to get to that 100 mark? Can we expect to see you at Paton Field for a couple more years? It’s not something I’ve thought about to be honest, 100 caps would be great to achieve at such a fantastic club but focusing on game by game making sure we’re getting the results we need is my aim at present.

Match Report Plymouth 7 v Caldy 26 Caldy started on their 600-mile round trip to Devon at 5.30am on Saturday morning. Twelve hours later the ‘Ravers’ left Brickfields with a 5-point win and headed into the depths of Plymouth to celebrate a brilliant all-round performance. Caldy are now unbeaten in 6 games following the 26-7 win in National League One, moving up to seventh in the table after eight games.
at the crossbar challenge to try to win a prize from sponsors Jail Ale.
The first few minutes were something of a sparring session before the game opened up after Albion made a break but were held back and penalised for holding on in the ruck.
A quick exchange of possession by both teams in the midfield led to the Ravers stressing Plymouth in wide areas as they had done in the first half.
Caldy took the penalty kick into the Plymouth 22, won the resulting lineout before a brilliant offload from Sam Dickinson in midfield followed by quick thinking from Ezra Hinchliffe broke the Albion line and winger Michael Cartmill touched down. Ben Jones converted to make it 7-0 to Caldy after 10 minutes. The Ravers remained in the ascendency and scored again in the 20th minute following a strong driving maul, prop Jack Parker finding himself at the bottom of the pile. Jones missed the conversion. 0-12 Caldy. 20 minutes gone. Albion did respond with some dogged play and a charge down from a Caldy clearance kick put them on the front foot. The home side linked multiple phases for the first time, and following a wild triple miss, bounce pass.. Ducker was unmarked to sprint in for the try which saw Putt convert, closing the gap to five points as the half ended. Albion put on the half-time entertainment which featured another display from the Plymouth cheerleaders and some of the crowd having a pop
The Ravers got the second half under way and put Albion under pressure from the off, with the home side seemingly trapped in their own 22 as Caldy pressed and worked through multiple phases on many occasions.
After the ball went through five sets of hands. Lucas Titherington fed Elliot Gourlay who reciprocated and put Lucas in for a try of the season contender so far, 10 minutes after the restart. Once again duly converted by Jones to extend their lead 19-7. As the pressure built on the home side, the amount of handling errors increased as did the penalty count against them. Caldy were in the ascendency. In the 62nd minute, Caldy scored another try through Full-Back, Elliot Gourlay, again converted by Jones, following a mix-up in the Albion defence. Gourlay spotted no full back, kicked into an empty in-goal and out-ran the covering defence to score. A brilliant opportunist try and also our bonus point. With 10 minutes remaining, Caldy weathered the expected Albion storm, but as ever, multiple solid defensive sets thwarted the home sides advances. A great performance on the road helped Caldy to their 4th win of the campaign. Celebrated in true Ravers fashion.
