aving missed the beginning of the season for such a spurious reason as a holiday, I would like first of all to thank Gary for covering for me in the last home programme’s President’s Welcome for the Birmingham Moseley game. As Gary said I have missed my rugby whilst at least being able to follow Twitter during the course of each game whilst abroad, and would like to congratulate the team on their performances to date. I believe the first game against Cinderford was a very close run affair with Caldy finishing up just on the wrong side of a winning scoreline. I was able to attend last week’s match at Blackheath and witness a hard earned win for Caldy, the first win that I can remember in the London area since our elevation to National 1 some seasons ago. Congratulations to Matt and the team for their tremendous performance including scoring the winning try in extra time. A rather boisterous journey home first class courtesy of Avanti was had by all concerned; just as well that there were very few other passengers on the train! I too would like to endorse Gary’s comments last week by congratulating the team on their performance in winning National 2 North last

season with an unbeaten 25 match winning record, and also to our second team who won their league also with an unbeaten record. Returning to the present I would like to welcome all those attending the pre -match lunch today in addition to our members, visitors and spectators attending the game. Your support is vital to the well being of our club and I wish to thank you all for your attendance at today’s game. I am aware that the team relies on its supporters, as with any club, particularly at home games and if we can get behind the team with as much positive vocal support as possible I’m sure this will be reflected in the team’s overall performance. Today we extend a very warm welcome our friends from the North East, Darlington Mowden Park who are similarly placed in the league table at present and with whom we cannot expect a well contested match this afternoon. Having played Mowden Park at junior level many years ago I am aware of the strides that this club has made in recent times, having cemented their place and performed well in National 1 since their promotion a good number of years ago. If any of you have been to their ground you will be aware that they play in the Northern Echo

I hope that when we return for the away game early next year you can help us fill as many seats as possible. I wish to extend my thanks to all those involved in the tremendous work carried out both inside and outside the club during the close season, particularly our sponsors and those directly involved in the work without whom none of the major improvements would have been possible. Gary has previously mentioned some of those concerned but my sincere thanks again to all who contributed. We are fortunate to have such a hard working committee and support group of workers, including principally the Last of the Summer Wine, who volunteer their time and services free of charge, and maintain not only the clubhouse but the grounds to a standard that we can all be proud of and form the backbone of Caldy Rugby Club. My thanks also to Lyn Ridgway and the community rugby section who through sheer hard work are going from strength to strength as the seasons progress. The noise and commitment on a Sunday morning have to be seen to be believed and should

ensure the future for our rugby club both on and off the field of play. Other sections such as walking rugby seem to have taken off although I understand that this form of rugby is as susceptible to injury as any other. Whatever form of rugby you are involved in I feel sure that you will as a member derive great enjoyment from the game. I would like to encourage you all to contribute to the club if at all possible by becoming full members, or at least season ticket holders, details of which can be found on our website. We need to ensure that our financial situation remains in a healthy position, and your support whether as a sponsor, member or contributor in some form will help us maintain the standard of rugby at Caldy to which we all aspire. Player Profile Nathan Rushton ‘Bushy’

1. Firstly, how does it feel to be re-joining Caldy RFC in national one this season? Feels like I have never been away! The boys have been very welcoming and as is everyone involved at the club. I am looking forward to the challenge of playing National 1, for a great club. 2. Who are your previous clubs? Bit of background on your rugby CV? This could take a while…Started at Tyldesley rugby club as a junior went through to play first XV. Whilst at Liverpool John Moores Uni, played for 3 clubs; Birkenhead Park, Chester and Caldy. I then moved to Sedgley park, after winning the double with Caldy. Had 3 great years there, short stint at Sandbach during COVID, and then finally back to Caldy. So I’ve ‘been around’ as some would say. 3. How has preseason been? It’s been good. Mix of running and game. However, been some floggings which is to be expected going into Nat 1.

4. Expectations for the season? Find my feet in National 1. Play well and help the team remain in National 1 at the end of the season. 5. Who’s your best buddy in camp? Would have to go with Big Crouchy. 6. Where does the nickname bushy come from? Originally my dad! He is known as Bush. I am Bushy. It’s just kinda stuck.

Match Report Blackheath 16 - Caldy 18 After 3 games Caldy has finally got its first National 1 league points of the season with a last-minute win over Blackheath at Well Hall and Caldy’s Director of Rugby Gareth Davies couldn’t be more delighted. “This is our third season in National 1, but this is our first ever victory in London and after our horror show the week before at home against Moseley it couldn’t have come at a better time. We have a very honest squad of coaches and players. No one hid away from the inept display against Moseley. Everyone was embarrassed by that performance, and nothing really needed to be said by the coaching staff in the week leading up to the Blackheath match” But of course, there was a lot said, very directly and very forcibly. No one backed away from some difficult truths and the squad’s mindset was completely different by the time they boarded the train at Lime Street for the journey to London to face Blackheath. The giddy pre match atmosphere from the previous week was replaced by a more determined and clear focus which is a pre -requisite in National 1. Within a few minutes a 50/22 kick by Mike Barlow gave Caldy field position on the immaculate Blackheath pitch putting the visitors in striking range. The inside centre followed up his sublime kick with an outrageous dummy which completely bamboozled the home defence allowing the centre to waltz over for Caldy’s first try after only 6 minutes. Blackheath clawed their way back into the match and a penalty and a converted try gave

the hosts a narrow 10-7 lead just before half time. Until the final minutes scoring in the second half was restricted to a series of penalties keeping Blackheath ahead 16-13 until the 78th minute when Caldy’s second row Martin Gerrard scored the winning try from a driven lineout to ensure victory for the Wirral side. “This performance sets the bar for the rest of the season” said Davies “Moseley was the wakeup call. We needed to be reminded just how ruthlessly competitive National 1 is. That harsh lesson was very clear and fully deserved. If we are not 100% focussed and accurate each and every week we will be comprehensively turned over, it is as simple as. “ Davies emphasised the togetherness and determination of the entire senior squad as the principal reason for the improvement in performance over the previous week. “On the day there were some standout individual performances. The Rugby Paper and Blackheath picked out Adam Aigbokhae as the ‘Star Man’ which I wouldn’t argue with, but that performance was down to the entire senior squad. The 2nd xv has no game for two weeks, but all the guys are training, enabling us to prepare the 1st xv squad properly during the week. There are absolutely no easy games at this level. This togetherness and commitment makes the difference.” This Saturday 2nd October Caldy face Darlington Mowden Park at Paton Field.
