elcome again to Caldy today to all of our members, supporters, guests and visitors in this our third home game of the season. As anticipated our elevation to National 1 again is proving to be a real challenge with every game well contested and points proving hard to come by. In our latest match against Darlington Mowden Park the game was end to end with Darlington scoring a converted try in the last minute of the game. Fortunately the game was out of reach by this time and we recorded our second win of the season, a real credit to Matt Cairns and his coaching team and all the players concerned. Unfortunately our injury list continues to build and, whilst we have a good squad, some respite with players returning to action would be most welcome. Today we extend a very warm welcome to new opposition from Chinnor, who have acquitted themselves extremely well in this their second season in National 1. I understand that the team was formed approximately 50 years ago and play their home games in Thame in Oxfordshire. Chinnor are yet another club that, like ourselves, has benefitted from the advent of league rugby, having moved through the southern leagues to their current lofty position

in 4th. place in our league at present. We look forward to meeting their team and committee and to yet another tough encounter here at Paton Field and subsequently to our first return visit in the New Year. Chinnor have recruited well, with some well known and respected players including Soane Tonga’uiha, the former Northampton prop who we faced a few years back when playing Ampthill in this league. That was a tough encounter with our own pocket battleship Degsy providing stiff opposition up front despite a fairly heavy defeat. I’m sure that Soane will look forward to meeting up today with our own No. 8 Sam Dickinson a former fellow team member from Northampton days. Having read their recent match reports Chinnor apparently have also suffered a considerable injury list, a fate that seems to be affecting many clubs since the reintroduction of rugby following the pandemic. I think this is understandable given the recent lengthy layoff and we wish all of those suffering injury a speedy recovery. Today our 2nd team play their first game of the season with a cup match also at home against Sandbach. Following on from their unbeaten season last year, we all hope for

more of the same this year, but with the enforced break and a number of new faces it will be down to sheer hard work not only from our coaches but also from the players concerned. We wish them well for the season ahead. I would also like to congratulate our girls under 13 & 15’s teams who last week were involved in a tournament at Macclesfield. I understand that they performed well and wish both the players and their coaching staff well this season. Tomorrow our ground will as usual be filled with minis and juniors in addition to the numerous coaching staff, parents and spectators without whom this aspect of our game could not survive, and on which the future of our club depends. It was good to see so much support last weekend despite the weather, with our more extensive spectating facilities on the bank being utilised for the first time. This is a real credit to Bob Cooke and all those who both worked on and sponsored these new facilities, providing a substantial increase in paved terraced areas and a more extensive elevated view of the game for all concerned. The vista from the bank over to the Welsh hills has to be one of the best in the league

and something of which we can all take real enjoyment whatever the weather. We will hope for better weather today, but I wish to express my thanks again to our ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine, who as volunteers give of their time in all conditions to produce the wonderful playing surfaces at Caldy Rugby Club that we can all enjoy and be proud of. I would also like to thank all those involved in managing and operating the club during match days and throughout the week including the catering and bar staff without whom the club could not function. Finally I would like to thank once again all our members, season ticket holders and supporters for your continuing support, as well as our sponsors without whom we could not continue to operate. 1. Firstly, How does it feel to be re-joining Caldy RFC in National One this season after a 4 year break? I’ve always enjoyed preseason with Caldy since I was 18 so just really excited to make the most of a full season. 2. Who are your previous clubs? Bit of background on your rugby CV? I played for Liverpool Collegiate and Sale Academy growing up then played for Durham University for 4 years with a season at Harrogate RFC in between.

6. You’ve come down from Uni and playing in the BUCS league, is there a step up in terms of standard and quality you’ve noticed or it it pretty similar? I think there’s similarities in terms of speed of play and skill sets but definitely a step up in terms of physicality and attention to detail. 7. You have a degree and a masters, what did you study? I did a masters in Psychology and Economics (couldn’t let go) after doing a finance degree.

3. How has preseason been? Good fun after such a long layoff and enjoying the challenge of learning a new system and way of playing. 4. Expectations for the season? Enjoy being back playing and play as much first team rugby as possible. 5. Who’s your best buddy in camp? Everyone’s been very welcoming and it’s been great having Jack Beavers back in the mix.

Match Report Caldy 27 v Darlington Mowden Park 22 Caldy’s power against DMP’s fizz was always going to a battle of styles and as the rain lashed Paton Field it was eventually power that prevailed. Apart from a very brief period Caldy maintained a lead throughout, thanks to their muscular pack and winger Ben Jones’ kicking, but they never quite managed to fully subdue a game DMP side. No matter which sides are playing National 1 defences are good, and mostly very good as this match amply demonstrated. Caldy had the majority of possession in the first quarter but there was no easy way through DMP. Pressure turning to penalties was the best route for Caldy. A brace of early penalties were slotted by Jones to establish a 6-0 lead for the home side which DMP’s Warren Seals countered with 3 points but the visitors were creaking in the set piece and when Caldy’s scrum drove the Northeast side back at a rate of knots Jones restored the 6-point lead with another penalty. A thunderous tackle which removed the powerful Adam Aigbokhae from the contest would be a huge setback for most teams but when you can summon a player as good as Nyle Davidson from the bench it helps. However, against the run of play a break by DMP secured an attacking scrum which a Caldy infringement turned into a penalty try to give the visitors a 9-10 lead for all of a minute. The Wirral side stormed down field immediately after the restart and all action Ollie Hearn scored in the corner to enable Caldy to go in at the break 14-10 ahead.

DMP had their chances at the start of the second half but were thwarted by their own mistakes and Caldy’s defensive pressure. Despite now playing into the wind and the heavy rain, Caldy were gaining the ascendancy and flanker Nyle Davidson crashed over for a converted score. A DMP try from a driven line out to take the match to 21 -15 threatened a resurgence from DMP which should probably have been 21-17 if DMP’s Warren Seals hadn’t stalled his run up for the attempted conversion. As the DMP kicker moved towards the ball Caldy flier Nick Royle sprinted fully 25 metres from his line to boot the ball from the tee right from under the nose of the flabbergasted but stationary Seals. The bizarre conversion miss deflated the visitors and another brace of penalties by Jones put the game safe for Caldy with DMP salvaging a losing bonus point courtesy of a try at the death. This was a professional and well managed performance by Caldy who were always in control. The newly promoted side are starting to find their feet again in National 1. There will be no easy games, but it is becoming clear that Caldy have the grit, the determination, and the ability to stay in the contest. This Saturday Chinnor RFC at Paton Field.
