very warm welcome again to all of our members, supporters, guests and visitors for this our third 1st XV home game of 2022. Last Saturday we had another tough trip away to Chinnor who are fighting to stay in contention at the top end of the table, but came away victorious once again having led 10 -0 at half time after playing into a strong blustery wind in the first half. Chinnor regrouped at the start of the second half with two tries and a conversion within 10 minutes to lead by 12 points to 10, but that was as good as it got with Ben Jones kicking 2 penalties and converting Mike Cartmill’s try towards the end of the game to give Caldy victory by 23 points to 12. This hard fought win maintained our second place in the league although we have closed the gap on leaders Rosslyn Park to 7 points after Park were beaten by Rams last Saturday. Caldy, whilst ahead in second spot, are only just ahead of Sale and Cinderford, whilst Cambridge and Rams slightly further back have a game in hand. There can be no let up in performances if Caldy want to retain this status in the weeks to come. Today we extend a very warm welcome to Cambridge RFC, who are currently fifth in the league after a terrific season to date. Like Caldy, Cambridge have only been beaten once since last September and are on a tremendous winning sequence. catchup rugby throughout and scoring a fabulous converted try by Nick Royle in the last few minutes of the game to level the scores. On the basis of form to date today’s game is a difficult result to predict and could well end up in another draw; I wonder what the odds are on that one. As we are aware this is a tough league and on their day any team can beat any other, something that has become even more evident in the league in recent weeks. One thing is certain, Cambridge will be extremely competitive, and yet again there is another fantastic game of rugby in prospect whatever happens at Paton Field today. Cambridge can trace their history back to 1923, one year before Old Caldeians were formed, and like ourselves played fairly local rugby during the amateur years before the leagues were formed in the early 1990’s. They did however have some former illustrious players in this period including Dickie Jeeps, former scrum half and captain for England, and Andy Hancock, England’s winger, who some of our senior members may recall scored a famous length of the field try against Scotland if I remember correctly to win the game. More recently they have had other internationals in their former ranks such as Ben Spencer and Alex Goode whose names many of us will be familiar with. The club have played most of their rugby at their current venue in Grantchester Road since the 1950’s and, having bought the leasehold at 1

President’s Welcome - Continued the inception of the leagues in the early 90’s, have since gone on to develop their current facilities with the addition of a new clubhouse and subsequently a grandstand. This has resulted in a fine stadium at Volac Park that we are fortunate to have visited on a number of occasions recently. Cambridge reached the higher echelons of the rugby pyramid in 2009 I believe, having been promoted from the London & SE divisions to National 1 for the first time, and have retained this status apart from 3 seasons between 2013 and 2016 ever since. Famously as far as we are concerned they retained their status after ‘the great escape’ in 2019 at our expense, beating Sale away on the last day of the season whilst we lost out to Moseley with the last play of the game and were relegated as a result. Having regained National 1 status today’s game will be the third season that we have played Cambridge at this level. Our 2nd team have no scheduled fixture today but still sit proudly at the top of the league with an unbeaten record this season and games in hand over their nearest rivals. Last week Caldy beat Lymm away from home by 54 points to 17 and will obviously be looking to extend their record later this month. Congratulations again to the squad and coaches on their perfect season to date, with a winning record that now trails back to the season before last, quite an achievement. I hope that as many of us as possible will turn out this weekend to support our team, and provide positive encouragement which I know gives our players a real lift in terms of their performance on the field. We now have more extensive spectating facilities on the bank so let’s get out there, get behind our team and hopefully,

given reasonable weather, enjoy the spectacle that matchday brings. A word of caution though as we are not yet out of this pandemic, and care should be taken particularly indoors where Covid is more transmittable. We continue to recommend the wearing of facemasks and safe distancing wherever possible, although of course this is no longer mandatory; I realise that this is difficult at this time of year but please continue to use outdoor spaces or get a breath of fresh air wherever possible. On our part the club will endeavour to make indoor spaces as safe as possible, although this may require a degree of patience particularly in terms of bar and kitchen service during the afternoon. I wish to express my thanks again to our ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine, and other volunteers who give of their time in all conditions to produce the wonderful playing surfaces at Caldy Rugby Club that we can all enjoy and be proud of. I would also like to thank all those involved in managing and operating the club during match days and throughout the week including the gate team, catering and bar staff without whom the club could not function. Finally I would like to thank once again all our members, season ticket holders and supporters for your continuing support, as well as our sponsors without whom we could not continue to operate. Player Profile Lucas Titherington

1. Firstly, how much are you enjoying playing your rugby in National One? I’m thoroughly enjoying it. There are no easy games and it takes a toll on the body but it’s great to compete and play in a high pressure environment. 2. You’ve been one of the stand out players in the backline this year, did you set yourself any goals before the season in terms of performance, tries, appearances etc.? I have set myself a personal goal to score 10 tries by the end of the season, there’s no better feeling other than winning of course. I also felt that I had a point to prove and that I could compete at this level. With 9 games to go there is still plenty of chances to develop and achieve those goals. 3. We’re 2nd in National One going into this weekend, how have we achieved that? We don’t have a huge squad, but what we do have is a team of players who play for eachother and want to win. We also place a big emphasis on making a solid game plan in the week and making the changes when necessary. I think our forwards are also a big factor, It’s great to play with the pack we have, the set piece is solid and there’s always options in open play. They are always doing the extras whilst us backs are getting the showers warm, their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

4. There is a nickname knocking around for you, the ‘Big Truck’! Where’s that come from? Uni? Haha, the nickname came from my time at Lymm when I was called the big truck on an 18th birthday post. A few of mates at uni caught on to it and it’s stuck for a few years now. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it. Ridgeway never fails to say “let’s go big truck” before every game. 5. What can we expect from Cambridge this Saturday? They’ve got a big pack and good decision makers in the team. They’ll run their shape from anywhere on the pitch so it’s important we are switched on in defence. This shouldn’t detach us from how we want to play though, we need to be confident in our abilities and get the job done. It’s been a great journey so far and only losers like losing.

Playing against the wind and the slope Caldy turned around 10-0 ahead after man of the match Joe Murray had scored from a sniping break and Ben Jones had continued his great form from the kicking tee.

Despite conceding 12 points early in the 2nd half, the Ravers regained their composure and took the lead courtesy of 2 Ben Jones penalties and a slashing run from Mike Cartmill which put the centre in under the posts. Chinnor were a very capable and dangerous side but their big runners were repeatedly knocked backwards by the discipline and intensity of Caldy’s defence which gave the team another good win on the road.

Tomorrow 5th placed Cambridge are the visitors to Paton Field. Cambridge have assembled an impressive squad of players and after a few losses early in the season the ‘Blood and Sand’ have shifted into top gear. Wins over, Rosslyn Park, Cinderford and Sale together with last week’s 34-7, six try thumping of Blackheath positions Cambridge as probably the most dangerous side to visit Paton Field this season.
