President’s Welcome
Graham Armitage
I
n between the many lockdowns a number of us would regularly enjoy table service up at the rugby club. Graham Armitage, our President, would tell us how much he was missing the rugby and what an important part of his life he has realised it is. Unfortunately, Graham is on holiday for the start of the season and is missing for today’s first home game and Past Players event - so I am penning the welcome on his behalf but I am sure Graham will enjoy welcoming everyone at future games. I would like to welcome all those attending our Past Players lunch. Today’s lunch includes people from all parts of the rugby club as well as many, many Past Players. All are very welcome and I hope you enjoy meeting up with old acquaintances and friends, enjoy the lunch and hopefully enjoy an exciting game of rugby. Rugby is a big part of all our lives and we have realised just how much we have missed it - a bit like Graham. A big and warm welcome to Birmingham Moseley. Interestingly, till last Saturday, the last league game Caldy had lost was against Birmingham Moseley in the last game of the 2018/2019 season when a
late try consigned us to relegation. The following season we were unbeaten when the season was cancelled in February and fortunately had already confirmed promotion. Birmingham Moseley is a club of great tradition and we are very pleased that our old friends will be our first home opponents of the 2021/2022 season. This week we received the trophy for winning National 2 last season, and a presentation will be made to our coaching team at the lunch today. It seems so long ago now but winning National 2 undefeated was a great achievement and well done to all the players and members of the coaching and management teams. Their commitment and professionalism has continued undiminished throughout the last 18 months and we are blessed with a great group of players and coaches who give their all - and we can ask for no more. There are many people to thank for all the work that has gone on behind the scenes since lockdown. As you will notice the viewing area for the 1st XV pitch has been extended and the bank levelled - an enormous job that entailed 120 tonne of limestone being hand placed in gabions.

President’s Welcome
Continued
In addition a lot of work has been done in the clubhouse including a new tea room, refurbished physio room, insulation fitted and new windows along with decoration and refurbishment of the toilets. I would like to thank all those who have donated money to pay for the works, the volunteers who gave their time freely, and in particular Ryen Wolfe - Spencer, who worked all summer and into late autumn last year and wouldn’t take a penny in pay. Also, Barrie Pilgrim who paid for and helped install our lower terrace and David Wilcox who paid for and organised the top terrace. In addition Paul Harrison paid for and arranged for the club house to be reclad. The greatest thanks though has to go to Bob Cooke, whose drive, vision and energy has seen him working nearly full time up at Caldy over the last 18 months - improving the clubhouse and grounds. Without Bob all the many improvements at the club would not have happened. Thanks from everyone at Caldy, Bob! I would also like to thank the members of the committee who have all continued to work hard for the rugby club right through the challenging times we have faced.
Volunteers are rarely appreciated but today take a moment and thank those volunteers who keep club’s like Caldy going come rain, hail or snow. Like all clubs, to play at this level we rely on the support of our sponsors and they have continued to support us right through the last 18 months. Thanks and it has been much appreciated! I would also like to pay tribute to our community section! Rugby is about playing, enjoyment and a sense of family. We have a tremendous Community section very well led by Lynn Ridgway and it has grown enormously over recent years and has new sections. Good luck for the season ahead! Finally, thanks to the Last of the Summer Wine, who worked through every lockdown and as ever have our pitches looking fantastic. Whether you are a member of Caldy, a Caldy supporter or play for or are involved with Birmingham Moseley I hope you enjoy the day and give your support to what I believe is the best level of league rugby to watch in the country.

Player Profile Sam Dickinson
How has it felt to be back at your boyhood club? Was it something you wanted to do towards the end of your career anyway? Brings back a lot of great memories shared by family and friends. Many new faces but a few old ones still knocking around. Finishing professional rugby and moving to semi-professional, what does a day in the life of Sam Dickinson consist of now?
Other than your obvious ability, what do you think you can add to this Caldy side? As the years pass by and your speed diminishes it’s hoped you can make up with some of that with some experience, I’ll be happy if I can pass some of that on to the younger lads. What’s it been like linking back up with your brother (JJ) after so many years?
It’s been a funky transition ending midseason and relocating during lockdown, took some of the preparation time away but finding my feet starting a new company. Most days it’s to the gym early on then heading to workshop down in Cheshire to mess around with some wood.
We only got to play together for a brief period before I moved on, it’s great to see why he’s held in such high regard by the club and the other players. Really looking forward to playing in the same side again.
How has pre-season gone?
Let’s just try and make it to Christmas.
Probably the longest in history but the coaches have been very sensible keeping it light and fun for the lads before gaining momentum as we head towards games.
QUICKFIRE 3
Are you looking forward to the first competitive national one match in September? Can’t wait, same as any other pre-season, you only battle through it for the games!
How many years you got left in those knees?
Away Bus trip or home court session? Bus. Last minute winner or 50 point win? Last minute. Paton field or Franklin’s Gardens? Patons Gardens.

Match Report Cinderford 29 - Caldy 21 11th September 2021
Anyone who was around when the Caldy team coach arrived back at Paton Field just before midnight on Saturday would probably expect to see a dispirited group of players disembarking after returning from Cinderford without even a losing bonus point to show for the more than 10 hours of coach travel to and from the Forest of Dean. That the Caldy players were upbeat and in the best of spirits was down to the excellence of the game and the closeness of the contest. Caldy’s giant second row Tom Sanders summed up the mood. “We are kicking ourselves for letting that game slip away from us. After Lucas scored to get us level with 15 minutes to go, we all expected to push on to get the win. We knew we had edge on them up front, but we made a couple of mistakes late on which gave them field position allowing them to close out an 8-point win and deny us any points from the game.” “However, we know we will be immeasurably better for getting this first league match under our belts and we are all very much looking forward to next week’s home game against Birmingham Moseley” After conceding an early score to the extreme pace of Cinderford speedster Tim Andrew, Caldy’s pack started to take control. Twice Cinderford were adjudged to have illegally denied Caldy scores and were punished by referee Dan Jones through penalty trys to Caldy. Caldy’s 14-7 lead stayed intact until just before the break when Nick Royle’s attempted interception was adjudged to be a deliberate knock on leading to another penalty try for the hosts to draw them level just before the end of the half.
The second half was as close as the first. Caldy had the ascendancy in the set piece but the excellence of Cinderford’s scrum half Mike Austin often turned defence into attack with the accuracy of his steepling box kicks. With Caldy’s Adam Aigbokhae cooling his heels in the sin bin Cinderford exerted pressure and regained the lead when speedster Tim Andrew went over for his second try of the day. It took a full 20 minutes of combative determined play before the next score by Caldy debutant centre Lucas Titherington which was converted by Ben Jones to bring Caldy level at 21-21. A rare Caldy mistake gave the home side field position and after a series of pick – and – goes the Cinderford No 8 reached out to claim their unconverted bonus point try on 70 minutes. With pretty much the last play of the game a final penalty kick was enough to seal the win 29-21 for Cinderford and deny Caldy a losing bonus point. This was a close and exciting match between two good sides. The game was a great advert for the quality of National 1 rugby as Tom Sanders acknowledged. “What sets National 1 rugby apart from National 2 rugby is the accuracy and pace of the game. This being their second league game meant that Cinderford were probably just that little bit sharper than us today. We will do our review during the week and look to bounce back against Birmingham Moseley next week.” Caldy’s man of the match was debutant centre Lucas Titherington whose excellent and assured play belied his recent step up from level 6 to level 3. Caldy’s next National League match is against Birmingham Moseley at Caldy’s Paton Field and kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday 18th September.
