very warm welcome to you all today including our visitors from Ampthill in this our first ever Championship Cup game. This is a new concept for ourselves with home and away fixtures against 3 Championship teams on a league basis before a knock out stage for the winners and runners up in each group later in the season. Last week we faced an in form Coventry side at home, but started slowly with mistakes allowing Coventry to take a 20 points to 3 lead by half time. After conceding a further score in the second half the fightback began; with Caldy scoring 3 unanswered tries unfortunately we were unable to find a fourth which, despite being camped on the Coventry line late on, would have resulted in at least 2 fully deserved bonus points. We need to make fewer mistakes, possibly easier said than done against the standard of opposition we are facing these days, and also rediscover our kicking form. Despite this reverse we remain competitive and it would appear to be only a matter of time before we achieve some further www.caldyrugbyclub.com

success at this level. Today’s game present a further challenge against an Ampthill team that we faced away 2 weeks ago in the league, losing by a 2 point margin having held a healthy lead at half time. We welcome in particular their Chairman Alex Radley, President Pat Sherry, Director of Rugby Mark Lavery and other members of their committee some of whom will be joining us for lunch today. Ampthill have proved their credentials over several years of playing Championship rugby, having been admirably coached by ex Welsh international Paul Turner, with some noteable successes against top sides in the league from time to time. Whilst this will no doubt be yet another tough encounter, it will be an opportunity for Caldy to rediscover winning form, and a good performance in the first 3 rounds of the Cup over the next few weeks may result in a boost in confidence and a improved league position next year. We hope that, whatever the result, Ampthill also enjoy the Caldy experience today on their visit to Paton Field. 2

President’s Welcome Continued Off the pitch we have continued to upgrade our facilities with further improvements to the floodlighting and to the bank now virtually complete. Other improvements have been carried out to satisfy Championship requirements both on and off the field and within the clubhouse areas. Our thanks go to all those responsible for putting in so much effort in such a limited timescale to ensure that we can all enjoy the level of rugby that is now on offer, and to our sponsors who have made this financially possible. Our thanks must also go to our team of ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine (LOSW for short), who freely give enormous amounts of their time to produce and maintain the standard of pitches that we all possibly take a little too much for granted. You only had to be here for the pre -season game against Sale Sharks and the recent home games to appreciate the wonderful aspect and playing facilities that the club now has to offer. I also need to mention the contribution of all those involved in the day to day operation and management of the club including our bar, catering and other members of staff without whom the club could not effectively function. Ampthill travel to Paton Field in the first round of the Championship Cup only two weeks after playing Caldy in the league at Dillingham Park! The Cup represents a welcome break from the league for the Mob who have a record of Played 7, Won 2, Lost 5 and sit in 9th place in the Championship table on 13 points, only two places and four points above today’s hosts. The Mob recorded a nine try win against London Scottish and came back from 24-7 down at half time against Caldy to win 26 – 24, however “points that got away” have frustrated Head Coach Paul Turner.

Made 107 appearances for Ampthill in the National Leagues between 2011 and 2015 before moving on to Doncaster Knights in the Championship. Resigned this summer after a couple of seasons in France, Joe brings a wealth of experience to the Ampthill pack. 5

Joined Ampthill from Ospreys in July 2021 having been part of the Welsh 7’s set up. Top try scorer for the Mob in his first season and named in the Championship Team of the Season and joint-leading try scorer in the Championship this season with eight from six games. Tomorrow the 1st xv face old friends Ampthill in the first round of the Championship Cup.. A fortnight ago Ampthill and Caldy played a highly competitive match in round 6 of the Championship at the picturesque Dillingham Park. The close match was won by the home side and Caldy will be looking to turn the tables on Ampthill in tomorrow’s cup clash. Paton Field is becoming something of a go to destination for overseas football supporters looking for something different to the same old Anfield or Old Trafford experience. Back in September a group of football supporters from Denmark so enjoyed their day at Paton Field that they set up a Caldy Supporters club in Kastrup which is near Copenhagen. Last Saturday Mathias Krebs and 9 of his colleagues returned to Paton Field for the match against Coventry and to present Caldy’s President Graham Armitage with a signed www.caldyrugbyclub.com

shirt from their football team Kastrup Boldklub. It didn’t end there. A group of German football supporters from Bernburg north of Leipzig travelled to the UK to watch Manchester United’s Europa League game against Sheriff. Having enjoyed everything that Old Trafford offered on Thursday evening Michael, Oliver, Thomas and Soren just needed something a little more satisfying. Having done their research on the best sporting venues in the North West of England they travelled expectantly by train to Paton Field. They were not disappointed. Spending most of their time at Jan’s scoreboard bar they fell into the company of Jon Bagley, Rob Rayner, John Wylie and Phil Wylie and after nightfall they retreated to the comfort of the open fire in the clubhouse. They were enthused by their first ever game of rugby and the brilliant hospitality from Jon Bagley and Caldy RFC. Oliver was lavish in his praise of 8

MATCH REPORT Caldy 18 - 27 Coventry Despite three tries in the second half Caldy were unable to complete a comeback against Coventry. Caldy started the brighter of the two sides and were unlucky to go behind just minutes into the game when Australian Patrick Pellegrini scored a penalty after just two minutes which was quickly cancelled out by a Ben Jones penalty. For the next quarter of the game Caldy dominated the visitors and were unlucky not to go over on several occasions. With the home side not able to break through, the visitors struck after a lineout and the ball was

driven over by Suva Ma’asi. The Midlander’s got into their stride and scored a second try after 27 minutes when Lucas Titherington fed the ball to Shea Cornish. Cornish scored again after an effective lineout and crashed over which saw Coventry gain a healthy 17-point advantage at half time. The visitors came out firing in the second half and secured the try bonus point seven minutes after the restart when Will Rigg crossed after another successful lineout. Caldy sparked into life with JJ Dickinson going over for the home side’s first try of the afternoon

after 55 minutes. With ten minutes remaining and Coventry having two players in the sin bin, Caldy turned the screw and after great play from Dan Bibby and Rhys Hayes, Elliott Gourlay went over for one of the best tries of the weekend to give a glimmer of hope to the home fans. With five minutes remaining hope of an unlikely Caldy comeback grew when the ball swept wide to Louis Beer and after beating the winger he fed the ball to Gourlay for his second try of the afternoon. Caldy Coach’s Report

This week we welcome Ampthill in the cup, which I think has come at a good time for us. It’s been a tough start to the season and the last few weeks have been disappointing as we feel we could have had two more wins under our belts. We were 24-7 up at halftime in the away fixture v Ampthill and we were really disappointed not to score any points in the second half. A mixture of losing concentration just after halftime and being in the end of some strange decisions led to a half of rugby that was uncharacteristic for this team. To add to the frustration we started poorly last week against Coventry but rallied late in the game to come back to a position where we could’ve won the game. I think the story of our season so far is that we have been competitive in all games, but the lesson being that we have to

play for 80 minutes and as we saw last week if you make a mistake you get punished. On reviewing the game, Coventry didn’t really create anything other than capitalising on our errors and ill discipline. It’s something we are working hard to put right and I really believe if we can get these things right we can win more games than we lose at this level. The next three weeks will give us an opportunity to give some people a rest and freshen up, whilst giving a well earned opportunity to those that have been playing well and stating their case in the second team. We hope that people can grasp the chance and help improve further the depth of the squad. Enjoy the game and please keep up the fantastic the support, every bit of it helps!!
