would have believed a few years back that Caldy would go on to achieve successive promotions from National 2 North to the Championship, having lost only 3 games in doing so, and in the event becoming one of the top 24 sides in the country in terms of first team league status. Not many of us who were there will ever forget the incredible scenes following our title winning game against Sale F.C. at the end of last season in front of what can only be described as an amazing record crowd. To a large extent the credit must go to our Director of Rugby and Head Coach and their coaching teams and of course the playing squad and senior players ably led by our talismanic skipper JJ. Let’s not forget however the contribution from our incredibly successful second team, unbeaten for more than 2 seasons, and our Community Section in particular from whose minis and

as previously mentioned we welcome Hartpury University and their committee to Paton Field for the first time in what will be a challenging season ahead. Hartpury rugby basically started at the beginning of this millennium and since then the club has made great strides forward, gaining promotions through the league rugby system and more recently dominating university rugby nationally. The Club gained promotion to the Championship in 2017 and have been ever present since. The club has close ties with Gloucester Rugby and consists of largely current or former students together with some dual registered players who will no doubt be formidable opponents for the game ahead. Our pre season warm up schedule will hopefully have given us an insight as to what to expect later

To you, the Caldy members, supporters and spectators, thank you also for your incredible support particularly towards the culmination of last season and hopefully going forward as we face this massive new challenge ahead. Your contribution cannot be underestimated as I’m sure the players would confirm and is an essential part of our effort to maintain our status with our centenary season just around the corner. Let’s all get fully behind our teams in the weeks and months ahead come wind, rain or shine and give them the positive support and encouragement they deserve. To enhance each occasion we have increased the capacity for our pre-match lunches which are becoming increasingly popular and are available to book on line. If you wish to do this or become a member/ purchase a season ticket or help us in any way please refer to our website for further details.
improvements have been carried out to satisfy Championship requirements both on and off the field within the clubhouse areas. Our thanks go to all those responsible including our chairman and committee for putting in so much effort in such a limited timescale to ensure that we can all enjoy the level of rugby that is now on offer, and to our sponsors who have made this leap in status financially possible. Our targets going forward are to not only maintain the standard of rugby on offer but also to make further progress with our new clubhouse proposals; this remains in the hands of the local authority planning department, with some further hurdles to negotiate no doubt before we can report further.
Our thanks must also go to our team of ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine (LOSW for short), who freely give enormous amounts of their time to produce and maintain the standard of pitches that we all possibly take a little too much for granted. You only had to be here for the pre -season game against Sale Sharks to appreciate the wonderful aspect and playing facilities that the club now has to offer. I also need to mention the contribution of all of those involved in the day to day operation and management of the club including our bar, catering and other members of staff without whom the club could not effectively function.
Finally, I sincerely hope that you enjoy your visit to Caldy today, particularly the rugby on offer and that come win lose or draw, we will all celebrate our match day experience together in the traditional way after the game.

time now and we are all ready to get started. We know we are in for a huge challenge this year and it’s going to be extremely difficult, but its something we are looking forward to both as players and coaches and hopefully we can adapt quickly, learn quickly and keep improving each game. It’s a tough start against an established Champ team in Hartpury, they play an exciting brand of rugby coupled with a very strong set of forwards. We want to give a good account of ourselves and are excited to see how we can perform at this level. As ever we will need all of our support!

I
t’s great to be back at Caldy for the start of our season in the Championship. It still feels a bit surreal that we are in the Championship and I think it has taken time for what the team achieved last season to sink in. The last game of last year against Sale FC has to be one of the great days in the clubs history and also an unforgettable day for everyone involved from supporters, sponsors, players and Coaches. It definitely is up there as one of my proudest days in Rugby and its certainly going to be difficult to top!

the last 10 years for all your hard work. What our current team, including management and coaches, have achieved has been exemplary and the foundations were laid by the hard work of all those who have gone before.
I asked our very own in – house statistician, Roger, who we played 10 years ago on the first day of the season. We played Huddersfield away in North One followed by a home match against Stockport – now it Hartpury followed by Richmond. Thanks to everyone who has played and been involved in any capacity over

Since that momentous win against Sale FC a lot of hard work has gone into preparing for the Championship. It still seems a bit surreal to be saying Caldy are in the English Rugby Championship. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am very excited at the prospect. The fact that the Rugby Paper has predicted that we will be bottom of the Championship will only give a greater incentive to Matt and the management and playing team to prove them wrong!
After the Sale FC game we had a meeting with Gareth, Matt and Rich over dinner at Hillbark. We were not asked for more money but were asked to support them by making sure everything we do is of a professional standard. Standards have been improved across the board and we have tried to give all possible support to our coaches and players, so they are as well prepared and presented as possible
I am sure everyone is interested in who will be playing for us next season (See Next Page). Otherwise, we go into the season with the same players who worked so hard to get us into the Championship. We are fortunate as a club that with such a successful community section that each year we have new young players challenging for first team places and I am sure this season will be no different. As a precaution though we have an arrangement with Sale Sharks, and many thanks to them for being so accommodating, whereby we can call on some of their academy players if we need to – who knows how injuries will go in a new division up against professional players.
What a pre – season! To have Sale Sharks playing at Caldy in front of a crowd of around 3,500 with their superstars wandering around as well. And I felt the game against Sale FC showed how much we have improved on last season with us winning by 47 – 12 – although we all know pre – season games mean very little once the season starts . The players started fitness programmes not long after last season finished to allow them to compete with the full - time professional players, they will be playing against this season and I thought the benefits showed.

It is great that we have now have sponsors based in Australia and Florida – so don’t let distance put you off. We have also started a Business Club, and at the time of writing have 56 members. We are still looking to grow the Club so if you would like to join or know anyone else who might please let us know. We have also had a lot of support with player sponsorship and match sponsorship. We do have games available for sponsorship and as we will be able to seat 120 in the small marquee, we will have up for the season, please do sponsor a game and bring guests along. Also, a special mention to Mark Loughran who has been up at the club nearly every day since he retired, including weekends, labouring as a volunteer and has certainly been left staggering on occasions after all the hard work. Being in the Championship is a lot more expensive than playing in the National Leagues. We receive £143k but must spend over £100k on medical costs and insurance plus much increased travel costs to the likes of Jersey and Cornish Pirates etc. So, we have made a very real effort to raise more sponsorship for Caldy and have been successful so far – although we always welcome new support. I would especially like to thank:
