Anti-abortion group on campus reignites free speech debate

College campuses are known for supporting differing opinions and ideas, but on Monday, Aug. 27, a different idea was displayed on the main campus in front of Building 6.

Tall graphic images stood in the quad of unborn fetuses and “abortion aftermath.” Pamphlets were strewn about the campus and those handing them out were walking around to passers-by to explain their reasoning.

Member of The Truth Project John Edgar said that “the goal is

to educate students on the humanity of the unborn child & the inhumanity of abortion.”

Edgar proceeded to explain that their group has been to 300 college campuses in the U.S. and they have experienced good and bad reactions through them all.

Edgar has a personal connection to anti-abortion activism as his family has gone through the difficulties of “abortion regret.” He states that he didn't intend to make people angry, nor to harm anyone.

He wanted to inform and communicate his story to those who will listen.

Don Blythe is another member of their anti-abortion team who mentions that there are rules to being on our campus as an organization, for example, no blocking walkways and no physical interference. Regardless of what their message is, it’s their First Amendment right, as each member of their group mentioned.

The pamphlets, on the other hand, struck a chord with anyone who flips through them. ”Not all of our sources are cited in our pamphlet,” Edgar admitted honestly.

Although, Blythe said, “All of our sources are cited, we go out and do research. People are telling us ‘well it’s not a human being yet’ and we did our research.”

Don said that the medical textbooks had shown that when the sperm and egg come

together it is “officially” a human being. Ricki Lewis Ph.D., a biologist who also writes college textbooks on Biology, wrote an article for the DNA Science organization in 2013, which states that, “A 4 or 6 week prenatal human is not a fetus — the difference is not arbitrary, it has biological meaning.”

In the same article, Lewis also wrote, “My goal was to provide biological information because I am a biologist. I left the philosophy and bioethics for others.”

Yet Blythe explained that, when someone states that the fetus is not a human being, “they are factually incorrect.”

“I wasn’t going to say anything to them, I was just walking by, I had my pro-choice sign and one of them said to me, ‘Oh, so you’re a baby killer?’” said Hailey Center, a student at Skyline, who was holding a pro-abortion rights sign next to the anti-abortion group.

Center was quiet while she was standing with her sign and felt unwelcome in her school. She spoke out about how she and others were feeling towards The Truth Project members.

“You’re making people cry, making them feel unwanted at school, is that really what we’re here for?” said Center to The Truth Project members. She also added, “Making abortion illegal will not make it go away, it will make it unsafe.”

Many students were affected and triggered by the people of The Truth Project. The content that they came with, that being the

images or stories were graphic to many on campus.

Don Blythe, explained that the images were there to scare people and to prevent future abortions because of how ugly the graphics were.

“They are shaming people for making their own choice, There are children from the Child Care Center walking around here, there was a student hiding in the back, crying, because of these images.” said Stephanie Thompson, a student who had a pro-abortion rights sign as well.

Susan Stack, another Skyline student, questioned an antiabortion team member who refused to respond to her. She asked him questions about how they had found the information on Planned Parenthood and he proceeded to tell her she was a nuisance and wouldn’t respond otherwise.

“If you’re going to stand on a college campus filled with intellectuals with strong opinions, you should come prepared to support yours instead of pushing back.” Stack said.

Susan also mentions the “swarming” of these team members. When she would start a discussion with one of them, they all circled around her. If their actions were clearly steered towards sharing information instead of forcing information, Stack said her reaction would have been different.

Health Center wanted the pill to be available to the students, so they continued to order the pill.

Emily Risk, a registered nurse who works at the Health Center, described the process of where to go to purchase the Plan B and the process before making the purchase.

“You come to the Health Center and speak to the nurse, your reason can be confidential when you check in, and if you are a female you fill out forms that go over different questions and symptoms to indicate whether she take a pregnancy test or not," Risk said.

Risk also added that “Even it is indicated she can always say she

doesn’t have to do it. We are not high pressure here.”

Risk also stated that at first, the pill was available to only females on campus. They realized as well that males can purchase the pill at their local pharmacies, so they made the pill available to all on campus to ensure safety.

When coming in to purchase Plan B, it can be confidential.

The Skyline College Health Center now offers emergency contraceptives, or Plan B One-Step, for an affordable

price compared to retail stores.

Students have no need to worry about their financial situation regarding the purchase of emergency contraceptives.

The Health Center located in Building 2 is offering students the Plan B pill at a cheaper price of $15. Prices for emergency contraceptives sold at local pharmacies can range from anywhere from $35 to $60.

Plan B was brought to Skyline about five years ago when Planned Parenthood made visits to the campus and offered the pill to the students once a week. Eventually, Planned Parenthood stopped making visits at Skyline, yet the

Anyone person is allowed to visit the health center to purchase the pill. The purchase is confidential and one just have to follow the procedures before buying the pill.

Skyline College President to retire after fall 2018 semester Dr. Regina Stanback Stroud announced her retirement to faculty at the Skyline opening day ceremony on Aug. 14.

Stroud served as vice president of instruction for nearly a decade before becoming president in the spring of 2011.

Skyline College Promise Scholars Program receives major grant On Aug. 9, the district received a $3 million grant to support Skyline's Promise Scholars Program (PSP) from the California Community Colleges Board of Governors' as part of the Chancellor's Innovation Awards in Higher Education, which awarded $20 million among 11 school districts. On July 10, Skyline was awarded a two-year grant to continue the free shuttle service from the San Mateo Country Transportation Authority and the City and County Association of Governments of San Mateo County. Senator John McCain died on Aug. 25 after fighting brain cancer for more than a year. McCain served in the Navy during the Vietnam War where he was captured as a prisoner of war. The decorated veteran went on to become a public servant, representing the state of Arizona in the Senate and GOP's presidential nomination in 2000 and 2008. In July 2017, McCain underwent treatment for an aggressive brain cancer; his family announced he had decided to end his treatment on Aug 24.

Weekly Briefs On Sunday, Aug. 26, 24-year-old David Katz from Baltimore opened fire at a football video game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, killing two and injuring 11 before killing himself. Police said they received a 911 phone call at 1:34 p.m. about a shooting at a nearby restaurant; according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's office, officers arrived two minutes later.

San Francisco police officers found the remains of a man inside a fish tank in his house on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The body was identified as that of Brian Egg, 65, who was reported missing in late July. The house was visited three times by officers but they left each time when nobody answered the door.

Former Vatican ambassador to the U.S. Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò alleged that Pope Francis knew of sexual misconduct allegations against former Washington D.C. archbishop Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. At the time of the allegations, Pope Francis was in Ireland to apologize for abuse from the Catholic Church. Viganò claimed to have personally told Pope Francis of Cardinal McCarrick's behavior in June 2013.

Your college experience is what you make of it

In America, it has become expected that the college experience means leaving home straight after college and not looking back. However, for many this is not the case; so that leaves one question: what does the college experience really mean?

Many movies such as “Neighbors”, “Pitch Perfect” and “Sorority Wars” focus on the party aspect of college in addition to students living away from home and being involved with some part of school, such as Greek life.

While many love these popular films that are meant to be light-hearted, these movies along with many others, are sending a message to its viewers: that this is what the typical college experience looks like.

For some students, the portrayal in the media might be a reality. However, it is unfair to give the college experience one meaning based on what movies and TV shows have to say.

For a system that is widely utilized by undergraduates, community colleges do not have enough representation in the media.

Research conducted by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found that “In the 2015-16 academic year, 49 percent of all students who completed a bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution had been enrolled at a two-year public institution at some point in the previous 10 years.”

Community colleges play a huge role in the college experience and have becomesso belittled and underrepresented. The lack of representation forms an unrealistic idea, and in the long run, only fails to portray the different realities of students.

Stereotypical portrayals of the college experience can lead to false hopes and misconstructed views on what college will be like.

The “college experience” will ultimately be what you choose to make of it. There is no possible way to describe what a “nor-

mal” college experience would be like.

Despite the college one attends or the number of semesters someone has been in college, the new school year will ring in situations some students have never faced that will contribute to their own unique experience.

Some students are returning to school after already being there for several semesters. Others are first-time students, and some might be returning to school after taking a semester or more off.

In addition, many students do not go to

school full time. There are many reasons students only take limited classes at a time, whether it be for health reasons or now being in a situation where they are not only responsible for themselves, but also a child. Whenever we see students portrayed in the media they are typically between the ages of 18 to 22, and go to school full time. However, statistics show us this is not always the case.

The demographics for students who are enrolled in one college can be vastly different. For instance, Skyline College reports that 4 percent of students are under 18, 52 percent of its students are between the ages of 18 to 22, and 23 percent are in the age range of 23 to 28. 13 percent of Skyline students are between 29 to 39 years of age, 4 percent are in the age range of 40 to 49, 2 percent are between the ages of 50 to 59, and 2 percent of Skyline students are over 60.

That is a wide range, and while the most popular age group might be those students between the ages of 18 and 22, it does not make other age groups any less “normal.”

For whatever reason they may be at Skyline, older students, or younger students for that matter, are only adding to their unique experience.

The media might portray one definition of a college life, but some students are older students or younger, some students commute, and some students choose to not partake in any college activity. But ultimately, that does not make their experience any less of a college experience.

‘We are not the enemy’ When the accused

In today’s political climate, we have a president who has categorized media members who do not outright support the administration’s policies as the “enemy of the people”.There are simple steps we can take to support our news outlets, who produce independent and truthful content. It is necessary for the public to do our own research and exercise scrutiny in order to combat Trump’s war on the free press.

This attack on the free press by President Donald Trump and his supporters is not only imprudent, but dangerous as well.

Franklin D. Roosevelt once said that, “Freedom of conscience, of education, of speech, of assembly are among the very fundamentals of democracy and all of them would be nullified should freedom of the press ever be successfully challenged.”

The public’s trust in the press is diminishing and was evident in an Ipsos poll conducted from Aug. 3-6. In the poll, participants were asked to rate the degree to which they agreed with the following statement: “The news media is the enemy of the American people.”

Almost a third of the American people, 29 percent, which include a plurality of Republicans, 48 percent, agree with the statement aforementioned.

Trump apologists argue that he is only referring to the biased coverage and that journalists are putting the president and his cabinet in a bad light, when referring to “fake news”. But let us all remind him of exactly what the Fourth Estate does: As journalists, we must be truth tellers; we must report fairly. We serve our democracy by being fair.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Free press is necessary to a democratic society as it does not flagrantly and blatantly trust those in power. It holds powerful people accountable for their actions through reporting. It is not a coincidence that the 45th president tries so hard to discredit the hard work of journalists across the nation who provide independent news.

Exposing deception in government is what precipitated the Justice Department to designate an independent counsel to investigate Trump’s financial affairs.

The New York Times Co. v. United States (1971) ruling made it possible for The New York Times and The Washington Post to publish the then-classified Pentagon Papers without censorship or punishment from the government.

Justice Hugo Black wrote an opinion that amplified his view of the true importance of the free press: “The press was protected so that it could bare the secrets of government and inform the people,” said Justice Hugo Black. “Only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government.”

The American people and our leaders have understood the true importance of the free press and how vital it is to a thriving democracy. So we ask Mr. Trump, why not you?

When Trump tells an audience in Kansas, “Don’t believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news”, he is waging a dangerous battle against a well-respected and fundamental part of our democracy.

George Orwell put it more elegantly when he wrote in his novel “1984”, “The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

The difference between “1984” and our nation is that we’re not a work of fiction.

We shouldn’t have to explain to the president of the United States the meaning of a free and independent press.

In every way possible, it is entirely un-American to outright call the free press an enemy of the people when for centuries we have been responsible for reporting the truth and the truth only.

becomes the accuser

With Editor-in-Chief Lauren Gozon The recent news of Asia Argento’s alleged sexual abuse and settlement has all of us on our toes; especially those following the #MeToo movement. According to reports from The New York Times, Argento agreed to a settlement of $380,000 for her very own accuser, actor Jimmy Bennett.

Initially, Argento denied the claims and stated that Bennett was attempting to extort her and TV chef and late ex-boyfriend Anthony Bourdain. A TMZ report followed, containing alleged text messages from Argento that indicate that the sexual encounters between her and Bennett did occur.

At the time of the alleged abuse, Argento was 37 and Bennett was 17. The age of consent in California is 18, meaning that if the allegations are indeed true, the encounter would be classified as statutory rape.

Argento was one of the first women to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. Since then, she has become a prominent figure of the #MeToo movement.

Still, as I continually process the Asia Argento situation, I keep going back to the same points.

Firstly, the #MeToo movement was never the Asia Argento movement, and we need to be able to separate the movement from an individual. She shouldn’t represent the movement, just as Rose

McGowan should not represent the movement.

Movements are about the ideas and we should remember that it’s important to follow the principle, not the people. The allegations against Ms. Argento should be treated the same way we treat all allegations. To denounce the #MeToo movement entirely is dangerous. The Argento allegations shouldn’t discredit #MeToo. The millions of men and women who have come forward telling their abuse stories should not be erased because of one hypocritical story.

“People will use these recent news stories to try and discredit the movement,” #MeToo founder Tarana Burke tweeted.

“Don’t let that happen.”

These hot takes about the #MeToo movement are laughable because they keep asking if the movement, which was started by a black woman, is now dead due to Bennett’s allegations against Argento. No one proclaimed that Argento was the leader.

Likewise, the double standards we hold for women and men are ridiculous.

On August 20, McGowan tweeted, “None of us know the truth of the situation and I’m sure more will be revealed.

Be gentle.” Since then, McGowan has deleted her tweet.

The #MeToo movement will fall if its leaders begin to engage in hypocrisy and double standards. Why shouldn’t we believe the allegations against Argento in the same way we believe other women’s allegations towards their abusers? In the same way, we cannot deny the abuse that happened to Argento that has propelled the movement forward.

An immense part of feminism is holding people accountable, men or women, and there is no reason we shouldn’t be holding Argento to account.

It is very unfortunate to hear about Bennett’s abuse and it is even more unfortunate to see how many people want to discredit #MeToo. Let’s not forget why the movement was started in the first place.

The fact that Argento’s accuser came forward with his story is proof that #MeToo is working, not proof that it is not.

CA community colleges don’t take mental health seriously

Every college should offer mental health services. Maybe this seems like a foregone conclusion. But in a recent survey by the California Health Report, as well as findings by experts, 19 of the 114 community colleges in California were found to have no mental health services on campus. By itself, this is worrisome, but it is even more so when one takes into account that California Health Report found that “students who attend community colleges are at higher risk for mental health issues.”

The crux of the issue is that due to the way that community colleges are funded, establishing a health service is optional for community college districts. But consistently optimal mental health is not a given. Therefore, there should be contingencies at every college for students that are struggling.

The importance of mental health counselors and services can’t be understated. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that more than 75 percent of all mental health conditions start before the age of 24. This makes it crucial for young adults to have mental health services. But even colleges that do have mental health counselors can have very limited hours.

What this says to me about the California community college system is that they value the physical health over the mental health of their students. While physical health is important, mental health can’t be seen from the outside, which makes it harder to see the scope of the problem.

It seems to me that these colleges are underestimating the impact and importance of providing mental health services on campus to their students.

In coordination with the difficulties of outwardly seeing the effects of mental health is the stigma that surrounds it.

Discussing mental health can still make people feel uncomfortable. Students that need help may feel discouraged from reaching out because they will be seen as “deficient” in some way or incapable of handling college while they watch other students succeed.

Colleges that don’t offer mental health services on campus are effectively saying that their students have no mental health

issues. If you didn’t feel ostracized before for struggling with your mental health, this message that the college is sending you could alienate you even more.

College students can be under intense stress, anxiety and pressure which makes getting an education hard. Ultimately, the goal of the school is to educate its students, and catering to their mental health is one aspect of that. By ignoring the needs of the students, colleges are prioritizing education over any other aspect that could impact the lives of their students and they come off as unsympathetic.

But there are solutions. In a study at 12 California colleges by the American Psychological Association, peer- or student-run mental health organizations and clubs helped reduce stigma and increase knowledge of mental health as well as saw more people engage in ”helping behaviors.”

In May 2017, the California community college system partnered with the Crisis Text Line to give students a free way to receive help. This was a great effort on the part of the college system. To help promote the partnership, an ambassador program would see 15 ambassadors (for a 114 college system) attend a conference that would train them in suicide prevention and create an event promoting mental health awareness. However, in an email interview with EdSurge, Heather McClenahen, the manager of equity programs at the Foundation for California Community Colleges said, “one student ambassador on a campus of 30,000 students may not make a dent”.

It’s obvious that this ambassador program is not fully thought through since it would be a massive waste of funding and resources to pay to implement a program that could cause no difference on campuses. Instead of throwing money at a program with little effect, it would serve students more for the California community college system to spend more time coming up with solutions that could affect real change on campuses.

Now that comics are growing off the page and are continually being adapted to the big screen, the fan base for them has expanded. With more and more people seeing these heroes, the need for mass appeal has also grown. Some fans feel like the casting of more racially diverse actors in these roles is wrong, and in some cases offensive. However, I feel that it opens up opportunities to tell new stories and from new perspectives.

Casting a racially diverse actor in the role of a superhero who is typically portrayed as a different race is actually groundbreaking. It can open up so many avenues for racially diverse actors and more importantly, minority audiences.

The succession of two well-known black characters, Miles Morales as Spiderman and Sam Wilson as Captain America, are great examples of the comics breaking the racial mold that was created years ago.

The comics are progressing with the times, and though we have to say goodbye to the likes of Peter Parker and Steve Rogers, it makes way for new faces such Morales and Wilson. It’s worth seeing ourselves and the conflicts tied to ourselves, such as issues regarding racial justice and stigma, portrayed in comics in some way.

Comic book characters can be altered in more than just ethnicity to show a new perspective. Jane Foster as Thor and Carrie Kelley as Robin, are heroes whose personas were previously portrayed by men. So if the source material did it, why not the adaptations?

Yet, when casting an actor of opposite gender than the character, we may ask the question: Where’s the line? Well, the line is the same as where the line is with race.

If gender is closely tied to the character, such as a hero who empowers other women like Wonder Woman and Mrs. Marvel, then the gender really shouldn’t be changed.

However, classic comic book characters such as Ironman don’t have that connection to a social issue that closely ties to their gender or race. The new Ironman comics don’t have Stark or another man playing Ironman. Instead, they’ve changed the character name to Ironheart, who is portrayed by a young black woman.

Spiderman has also gotten a new look as Spiderwoman, or Spider Gwen as she’s mostly known. Spider Gwen is a fan favorite and is a re-imagining of a classic hero.

Overall, if the character in the book isn’t tied closely to their culture, ethnicity or gender, then it’s not really a valid argument to say that the color of the actor’s skin or their gender has to be the same as the character’s since the comics have been changing that up for years.

Comic books have come a long way from just being propaganda for the country’s current war or just mind-numbing entertainment. Now they’ve become conduits for telling the stories of so many people. Now, we don’t see the story of one culture, or race or even gender. We are starting to see there are more stories out there.

Yet, supposed “fans” are getting upset about the on-screen adaptations trying to follow suit. But all these adaptations are trying to do is honor the direction the comics are going. The comics are already paving the way to a more diverse and open world. It’s about time their onscreen adaptations follow suit.

Juicy strawberries, sweet orange juice, organic eggs, baked pastries and the occasional sunflowers: Farmers’ market vendors load their trucks with their fresh produce so that they can sell to eager customers arriving as early as 6 a.m.

Most people visit farmers’ markets or have at least heard of them, but many probably haven’t considered what it is like to work at one or how people get into the business in the first place.

Being a farmers’ market vendor isn’t a typical job. Waking up early in the morning, vendors prep their produce and head to their market where they set up their stands and display their products. While there is a market manager, the vendor is essentially in charge of their own operation and the money they make. This allows for a freedom not offered at a typical nine-tofive position and many vendors view farmers’ market as their main source of income.

Christian Sanchez, an orange vendor for Ferry Farm, began doing markets five years ago. His wife is related to a farmer, so originally, Sanchez picked oranges and made orange juice for the farm until the farmer offered him a job as a vendor.

“I love the people,” Sanchez said.

“The people here are amazing, you get so many different characters.

With the vendors, everybody is

different, everybody is fun.”

Sanchez admits he used to be shy when speaking to customers but has since come out of his shell. He speaks on how he can do somewhat complex equations in his head almost instantly, even down to the cent, because when selling at the market there are typically no calculators for transactions.

“Here, we get people every week that have never been to a farmers market,” Sanchez said. “So they’re excited and it’s a new thing for them and the regular people, it’s like family.”

Sanchez explains that while the produce can be more pricey depending on what you want, it’s better quality since it is locally grown and farmers tend to think more about the customers than profit. An aspect of being a vendor that Sanchez loves is traveling for different markets. For example, Belmont typically consists of older people and families who know what produce they want and buy the citrus, where college campuses tend to sell more of the orange juice.

old and at this point does not even see it as a job anymore.

“It doesn’t really seem like work,” Leon said. “You know I have fun out here. I just come out here and do my thing, I’ve gotten really used to it.”

Similar to Sanchez, he comments on how much he loves the people and how you get to know both your neighbors and regulars on a deeper level than most jobs.

Terry Andretti is a different type of vendor at the market. She is the farmer herself and believes she is the best person to sell her produce.

She’s been doing farmer’s market for 44 years, but her husband’s family has been in the farming business since 1926. The family’s main income is Andretti Farm in Half Moon Bay. The family does market solely on weekends due to their farming during the week. Andretti hardly sells to grocers and prefers selling produce herself rather than using a vendor.

“People want to see the real farmer,” Andretti said. “They wanna talk to you, they wanna know how it’s grown, the water situation, what type of seeds there are.”

Andretti explains how farmers’ markets used to be around to benefit small farms and families, but now as they’ve grown more popular the corporations are coming in and hurting the smaller farms because there are too much of the

same items at the same markets.

According to Andretti, stores like Safeway require produce to be picked a week before and will not accept produce directly, but require it to be sent to a warehouse in Central Valley and distributed. Therefore, the produce is far from fresh.

Andretti has four men that have worked with her since 1974 and worries if she will have anyone to help pick the crops once they retire. She hopes the government will step in to help small farms.

Walking into a busy market, but the many of the vendors there have a love for people and their product.

They know more than you could ever find out at a grocery store.

‘Christopher Robin’ reconnects with his childhood

“Christopher Robin” is another twist on a classic tale that really brings out the type of nostalgia that weighs on your heart.

The film begins by rummaging through the stories so well known in childhood, making sure to bring back the memories of how it felt to be in those younger years.

As the familiar stories come to an end, it becomes apparent Christopher Robin, portrayed by Ewan McGregor, is growing up, and in turn leaving his friends at the Hundred Acre Wood behind. On comes the montage of Christopher Robin becoming an adult, along with the addition of his wife, played by Hayley Atwell, and daughter, played by Bronte Carmicheal.

Christopher Robin shows the telltale signs of losing the spark of childhood. He has immersed himself in his career at a luggage company and, in the process, risks his relationship with his family and forgets his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood.

But throughout the years, his dear friend Winnie the Pooh has not forgotten him. One morning, Winnie the Pooh awakens to find all his friends are missing and climbs through the tree his beloved Christopher used to come through and finds Christopher in the real world of London to aid him in the search.

whimsical meets reality. All the Hundred Acre Woods friends are just as you remember them, except a few such as Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, who show the signs of age with faded colors. There are a few deeper insights into the characters’ personalities as well. A wonderful addition to the story is Christopher’s daughter, Madeline, who is surprised to find out about the playful boy her father used to be which provides a stark contrast to the life her father lives now.

softer looking than the bear in the film “Ted”. Just imagine walking and talking firm, stuffed animals, but all with the personality of your beloved childhood characters.

The ending is, of course, a happy one, though it is better than the one you may have predicted. All the things you hope happen to them, mostly do. Overall, “Christopher Robin” is a film that brought laughter from all ages and would be enjoyed by all.

The rendition of this childhood story gives a deeper look into what life in the Hundred Acre Woods is like and answers two questions: “What happens when Christopher Robin grows up?” and “What if Winnie the Pooh and his friends were real?”.

Some aspects of the story can be a bit predictable, but enough plot twists come about that the film still becomes engaging.

Audiences first follow Christopher, then Madeline in an

array of emotions, until they begin to see themselves in each character and how they may have been caught up in life and forgotten the meaning of imagination and fun as Christopher struggles between success and joy in life.

This film is filled with emotion and laughter and was a lot better than expected in terms of plot twists and dynamic characters.

French Open bans Serena Williams' catsuit

The French Tennis Federation announced that they’re implementing new rules regarding players' uniforms for the 2019 French Open. President Bernard Guidicelli told Tennis Magazine that “sometimes we’ve gone too far,” referring to players’ attire.

Attire will now be subject to a strict dress code, and unfortunately, Serena Williams’ sleek catsuit, which caused a major sensation at this year’s French Open, would no longer be accepted.

“Serena’s outfit this year, for example, would no longer be accepted,” Guidicelli said. “You have to respect the game and place.”

The idea that Williams' choice of clothing insinuates that she doesn’t respect the game of tennis is ridiculous and utterly embarrassing.

In May, Williams’ told reporters the Nike-designed suit, inspired by Marvel’s "Black Panther", was created to help prevent blood clots, a health issue that nearly ended her life following the birth of her daughter last September.

“I’ve had a lot of problems with my blood clots. God, I don’t know how many I’ve had in the past 12 months,” Williams said at the May news conference. “I’ve been wearing pants in general a lot when I play so I can keep the blood circulation going.”

Williams is in fact not the first woman to wear a catsuit at a match.

It’s not William’s job to make the Federation feel comfortable. It’s her job to play the sport.

YouTube sensations' boxing match paves the way for the future of pay-per-view Celebrity sports events are as American as baseball but the recent bout between Olajide “KSI” Olatunji and Logan Paul has the potential to change the way major sports events are viewed.

The event received global attention propelled by the titans of Youtube combined following count of nearly 40 million subscribers.

The boxing match was held at Manchester Stadium and it featured one preliminary bout between the pair’s younger brothers, Jake Paul and Deji Olatunji. Jake won the match that was scheduled for 6 rounds; after Deji forfeited the match due to exhaustion at the end of the fourth round.

The amateur boxing match cost $10 to legally stream online, but plenty of viewers saw the fight for free by pirating the match on the popular streaming site Twitch.

The Aug. 25 matchup had 21,000 people in attendance and was streamed by nearly two million viewers according to Yahoo sports. However; only 773,000 of these viewers legally purchased the fight.

Logan and KSI both signed a two fight agreement with OP talent. Conveniently, the fight ended in a draw. One day after the fight, Logan immediately took to Twitter to detest the official result and announce the rematch in the US. KSI also believed he won the fight according to a recent tweet, however he also

announced to talkSPORT that he planned on taking a break from boxing and doesn’t want the rematch to happen in February. According to their contract, either party could opt out of the fight until November.

The method in which major combat sports events are broadcasted will certainly feel the impact of these internet sensations' recent endeavor.

Pay-per-view and combat sports are inseparable, but in 2017 the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Professional Boxing Commission (PBC) both reported steep losses in pay-per-view sales.

If these declines continue it could push these major combat sports organizations into the internet realm.

Logan and KSI both have solidified their place in internet history, but their impact on the way combat sports is broadcasted may leave behind a much bigger imprint on the sports industry.

Skyline women’s soccer team looks for success in San Luis Obispo

The Skyline women's soccer team's first pre-conference game of the season was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Aug. 28 versus Merritt College, however, it has been postponed to Sept. 7 and will be played at Skyline — the game time is to be determined.

Tuesday’s game would have been the first time this newly assembled team played together and would have been the sole game before the team’s long road trip to San Luis Obispo.

Due to the postponement, the women's soccer team's first game of the season will be an away game this Thursday against Cuesta College. The team will then play West Hills college on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Looking at the first few pre-conference matchups, Head Coach Kevin Corsiglia said he is utiliz-

ing the early games as an opportunity to see what the new players bring to the team and how summer training transfers over to the field.

“It’s a matter of how quickly the team can come together,” Corsiglia said. “We have a lot of different players coming from different systems all playing together on one team.”

With only seven returning players, the women’s soccer team is looking to set a positive tone for the new season by starting off on a couple of wins in San Luis Obispo.

Skyline goalkeeper Dahlia Nasrah playing her first season on the team said a key factor for in-game success would be “putting some people in their proper positions so they’re able to show their full potential."

“I want to see no panicking,” Nasrah said when discussing the team's defensive emphasis. “I want them to be able to be comfortable with me and trustworthy of me and

I want to be able to trust them as well with the ball.”

This early in the season, it is an opportune time, especially for newer teams, to try and resolve any issues and solidify communication amongst teammates.

“I think just spending more time together will help a lot,” Skyline women's soccer player Braedyn Stone said when addressing how the team can work on their cohesiveness. “Honestly, a lot of things we need to work on is our individual stuff. From there we can build something bigger.”

The Trojans are looking to create a solid foundation for the team that is built on strong player-to-player relationships.

When the team returns from their tournament, they will play against Modesto College on Wednesday, Sept. 5. This is another away game with lengthy travel followed by only one day of rest before playing their postponed game verse Merritt College at home.
