Apple CEO Tim Cook also took to Twitter to send his condolences.

“From everyone at Apple," Cook tweeted. "We send our sympathy and support to the team at YouTube and Google, especially the victims and their families.”

SparkPoint Director Chad Thompson, spoke about the resources that SparkPoint provides and the different reasons students might come into the center including financial coaching and saving up for housing.

“What I see, and what I hear from my staff, is there is multigenerational housing, meaning students living with various members of their family, or extended family is extremely common and necessary because of the high cost,” Thompson said.

Thompson, and SparkPoint see many students who have an interest in moving out for reasons such as frustration with family members, and they try to come up with a plan, but students are often left discouraged because of the lack of affordable housing.

SparkPoint and Skyline see the problem and they want to do more, Thompson said. But there is no plan in the works to help students specifically with housing.

Joseph Canta, a Skyline College student studying respiratory therapy, has taken time off in order to be able to live with his girlfriend, and even then he has additional roommates and finds

himself struggling. Canta along with many others are disappointed that there is no rent control in the Bay Area.

"Bay Area rent prices are crazy high," Canta said. "It affects me and students because instead of focusing on education, we [have] got to focus on paying debt and rent. It makes me think that we need to have a masters degree to even afford to live in the Bay Area."

Skyline keeps improving, not just with new projects but with diversity in the workforce. One of the projects that CIP3 is working on, the construction of the Environmental Science building, has women architects, engineers, project managers and people of different races.

Skyline student Evelyn Orozco, a civil engineering major, talked about the diverse people involved in the construction of the new building.

“Having women and people of different ethnic backgrounds is extremely important because it pushes for a more inclusive work environment,” said Orozco. “This matters because people who are at a disadvantage in society are less likely to face discrimination and receive the same opportunities as their counterparts who are at an

advantage.”

Students also had something to say about these new projects at Skyline.

UC Berkeley student Monique Ubungen, an English major, who works as a peer tutor at Skyline, expressed her opinion about all of the construction Skyline is doing.

“I'm very excited to see Skyline's CIP3 infrastructure projects come to life and all the amazing improvements around campus. However, I will really miss the beautiful open space of the vista point where the new Environmental Studies building (Building 12) will be built,” said Ubungen. "Overall, it was once such a wonderful place to sit on the ledge and peacefully enjoy the view of the ocean.”

Don’t shoot down mental illness In the wake of the Parkland, Florida shooting on Feb. 14, there has been everyday discussions about gun control and mental health. After the incident, gun control became yet another ongoing topic and issue in this country, but what about mental illness?

It seems like the topic of mental illness slipped, yet again, from people’s minds. But it’s about time we, as a country, discuss a mental health system reform for good.

With every mass shooting that catches national attention, these discussions have been brought up, but the discussion of mental illness has always been overshadowed by the idea of gun control. But does mental

health deserve a backseat to gun control?

The answer is no.

Yes, gun control is a very good idea, putting regulations on weapons that can do mass harm will help bring the number of those tragedies down. And we aren’t suggesting no gun control, we actually are all for gun control, but the discussion of a mental health reform needs to be started as well.

Everytime there is a shooting , leaders speak out about the need to help those with mental illnesses yet nothing is truly done about it. It is simply just talking. According to NAMI, the National Alliance of

Mental Illness, in the United States 1 in 5 adults experience some type of mental illness.

By bringing more awareness to mental illnesses, people will understand more about the topic and have a better idea of the true struggles people with mental illnesses go through on a daily basis, and will help destigmatize the negative connotations surrounding it.

A study conducted by the Los Angeles Times reported that 59 percent of 185 public mass shootings that took place in the U.S. in 2017 were carried out by people who had mental illnesses.

Bringing more aid to the mental health community can play a big part in lowering unwanted and unplanned incidents.

Bringing direct aid is not the only thing that can be done. Workshops can help with informing our communities and certain demographics such as high school and college students, about the different types of mental illnesses and how to help those who have mental illness.

History is being made across the country for the benefit of the people like gun control regulations and racial and sexual equality. However mental illness should not be left behind as it is just as important.

While it is important for Facebook, and Cambridge Analytica to see where they went wrong, they are not the only ones to work on improvement.

Supreme court sides with police

Stephon Clark. Danny Thomas. Arthur McAfee Jr. Ronell Foster. Police are using excessive force to murder innocent people, and the Supreme Court supports their actions. On Tuesday the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Tucson police officer, Andrew Kisela, in the most regressive decision of the last 20 years.

In 2010 Officer Kisela shot Amy Hughes, who was wielding a knife and approached her roommate, Sharon Chadwick. The three officers on scene did not know Hughes had a history of mental illness. “All three of the officers later said that at the time of the shooting they subjectively believed Hughes to be a threat to Chadwick,” said the Kisela v. Hughes Supreme Court per curiam decision.

Police officers have created a shoot first mentality which is backed by the Tennessee v. Garner ruling of 1985 that states “[w]here the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a threat of serious physical harm, either to the officer or to others, it is not constitutionally unreasonable to prevent escape by using deadly force.”

The Supreme Court is the last line of defense, for the people, in combating harmful legislation passed by the government. When the justices fail to protect the constitutional rights of the citizens and residents of our nation, they are not fulfilling their duty as judges.

This backward decision justified the recent ruling supported by all seven male justices and continues the toxic culture that haunts our nation’s police force. Hughes survived the gunshot wounds and pursued legal justice by suing Kisela for the use of excessive force in violation of the Fourth Amendment.

Tuesday’s ruling further complicates the separation between acceptable and excessive force for police officers, which will negatively affect the already hostile relationship between civilians and authorities. Police killed 987 people in 2017, according to the Washington Post, and mental illness played a role in a quarter of these incidents.

Officers told Hughes multiple times to drop the knife and Chadwick said, “take it easy” to both her roommate and the officers.

“Less than a minute had transpired from the moment the officers saw Chadwick to the moment Kisela fired shots.” said the Kisela v. Hughes per curiam.

This solidifies the future of having no justice for victims of police brutality and ensures that police will continue to kill civilians unlawfully and get away

with it, getting suspended with paid leave, similar to the officers responsible for the murder of Stephon Clark.

The Supreme Court ruling in favor of Kisela is extremely dangerous for minorities, particularly the black community.

According to data gathered by The Post, “Black males continued to represent a disproportionately large share of unarmed people killed, although their share has dropped slightly: from 32 percent of all unarmed killings during the first six months of last year to 26 percent for the same period this year.”

This unjust reality that the families of police brutality victims live is a result of officers not being held accountable for their actions and not receiving appropriate punishment for their use of excessive force. This ruling ensures a future of injustice for underrepresented populations.

Moving forward the Supreme Court needs to make better decisions regarding

pivotal rulings; this is especially important when the subject matter is as prevalent as police brutality.

Police need to do a much better job maintaining peace on the streets without firing their guns. If we do not entirely overhaul our country’s culture of policing, we will continue to see rising rates of murders at the hands of police.

What’s the hardest part about being a journalist?

With Editor-in-Chief Lauren Gozon I get asked this question a whole lot. A lot of the expected answers are, deadlines, right? Isn’t it hard managing a staff? What about thinking of stories to write?

My answers usually go like this: “No, deadlines aren’t too hard for me. Managing a staff isn’t as difficult as you might think.

Thinking of stories is challenging, of course, but I do what I can to not be overwhelmed.”

And so they’ll ask me a second time what the hardest part about being a journalist is.

By far, the hardest part about being a journalist is that I can’t be an activist. Prior to working in journalism, my opinions on social issues were broadcasted on all my social media. I was an activist before I was a journalist.

Not being able to participate in marches and protests and not being able to advocate for what I believe in is extremely difficult for someone whose job is to inform the public about news, without having a biased opinion.

I would be a liar if I told you that I had no opinion over the Trump administration’s moves since Trump was elected.

I would be a liar if I told you that I didn’t want to take a ribbon to support the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school victims during the walkout on March 13.

And I would definitely be a liar if I told you that there was never a time I didn’t want to insert my opinionated statements in a story.

This is that hardest part about being a journalist — not being able to voice my concerns as a woman of color in a patriarchal society. But journalists have a different job that requires us to report on events.

There is power in the stories we write and in the pictures we take.

We have an ethical and professional responsibility to pursue the truth about issues and events, then strive to report that truth as fairly and accurately as possible.

There is a line that I can’t cross as a journalist and yes, it’s challenging for me to not voice my opinions.

We are storytellers, we do our job to inform, and we must do both of these things the correct way.

The first rule of the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics is this, “Seek truth and report it. Journalists should be honest, fair, and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.”

As journalists, we must be truth tellers. We must report fairly on both sides of a story and toss out any implications of false moral equivalence. But this doesn’t mean that just because we don’t classify ourselves as activists that we are not useful.

The media is the fourth estate. Our duty is to serve humanity as citizens of the world through truth-telling.

Our jobs are burdensome when we report and photograph human rights issues like the Bosnian War due to journalism ethics. But again, journalists are storytellers and the way we do our jobs is different than that of an activist.

This doesn’t mean that my heart isn’t with the countless social activists out there who fight for the oppressed. It just means that at the end of the day, my head and my heart can’t always be put on the same playing field. Journalists serve the people by seeking the truth and reporting it. We should hand megaphones to the oppressed and marginalized and we must allow people to share their stories without our own opinions on the matter.

It’s up to us to truly understand what it means to be a journalist, to remember exactly why we chose to take on a difficult role and grasp what our true duty to this world is.

Before summer 2016, I decided I wanted to try out the elusive vegan diet; fast forward to today and I’ve been vegan almost two years later.

I’m vegan but I don’t succumb to annoying vegan cliches: I don’t judge non-vegans, I don’t brag about being vegan, I don’t over-glorify kale and I don’t only eat salad. Heck, if you’re not vegan, that’s cool. I don’t even eat kale and I seldom eat salads. These misconceptions about vegans are gross mischaracterizations of who I am and importantly, what veganism is.

Here’s my elevator speech about why I’m vegan: “I am vegan, but I’m not that vegan. I never really liked meat so cutting it from my diet was easy. The meat and dairy industry are leading contributors to climate change and while me being vegan “I don’t over-glorify kale and I don’t only eat salad.

According to “Tackling climate change through livestock”, a study done by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, livestock plays a large roll in climate change.

I also don’t like bringing up the fact that I’m vegan. When I do, it’s usually followed by objective glares from the askers.

I honestly don’t understand some people’s intolerance against vegans. It’s ridiculous.

Yes, there are “those” vegans that do shame non-vegans, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I do too. The idea that if one

vegan is annoying, then they are all is an incorrect generalization. Like in any other circumstances, get to know me and other vegans before making assumptions. You know what they say when you assume. ...

Another reaction that I dread hearing is, “Oh, don’t you miss [insert non-vegan food here]?” or “Wow, I could never give up [insert favorite non-vegan food].”

First, I always found eating meat gross, raw eggs creep me out and milk is just not good.

Before actually committing to the vegan diet, I was unintentionally working my way there. My first step was cutting milk; that was when I was 13 years old. I seldom drank milk so transitioning to the (superior) soy milk wasn’t difficult. The dairy industry has brainwashed people into thinking that cow milk creates strong bones. But does it?

There’s no denying adequate calcium intake can prevent osteoporosis or the weakening of bones, but that doesn’t necessarily mean cow milk is the sole provider of calcium as implied by the long-running “Got Milk?” campaign. Plant-based dairy replacements, dark leafy greens like chard and collards and soy-based products like tofu and are abundant in calcium, too.

One serving or one cup of whole milk from a cow contains 30 percent of the daily value of calcium. Likewise, a single cup of organic unsweetened soy milk (what I add to my bowl of cereal) contains

In general, the dairy industry is a twisted faction fueled by money loving capitalists who get butthurt by plant-based companies using “milk” to describe dairy-free beverages (I could go in on the meat and dairy industry, but that’s for another time).

Why say, “I’m here for a good time, not a long time” when you can say “I’m here for a good time and a long time” by going vegan?

Color Factory, with blues, greens, pinks, yellows and burst of confetti, pleases your perceptions upon arrival.

For $35, you can immerse yourself in a world of color that you can see, smell, taste and feel.

With the right company, this museum creates a fun, largely interactive experience at your disposal to enhance the theme of your Instagram feed.

The pop-up museum comprises many experiences: the scratch and sniff room, the disco room and the yellow ball pit to name a few.

Here’s how the Color Factory works: an employee in a colored jumpsuit hands you a card which is then registered on iPads in the first room. In future rooms, you use these cards to begin a countdown for the camera to shoot a photo. Capturing the best moment can be quite difficult, but makes for some hilarious shots and thankfully, they’re unlimited.

Right away, you may commence with the silly photos as you interact with the scratch and sniff circles attached to their related colors on the walls. For example, when you scratch the patch on the yellow stripe, it smells like lemon,

and the green patch smells like grass when scratched. This first room also serves a treat: colorful macaroons.

The next room is completely different as it included an array of black and white stripes similar to those used in optical illusions.

This became a familiar theme in the museum; being wonderfully shocked at the creative ways they utilized the rooms and their colors.

In this room, a healthy treat was served: a black charcoal agave lemonade.

The next room is where the color begins. Orange, orange everywhere. Everything you see is a shade of orange. The museum may seem quite simple, but navigating the ideal path of each room without asking an employee is difficult. If you realized there was a room that you passed, there’s no going back allowed.

This is also where the real fun begins. The maze of bright colors is a journey with every new color presented in a new and unexpected way. As you progress throughout the museum, each color becomes more interactive.

The last room is the yellow ball pit room which also shares the free yellow ice cream cones and yellow gift shop. This bright room is honestly the most fun, and where

you most get to feel like a kid as you drown in the sea of plastic balls. While you do need your own camera here, the shots are hilarious and you leave tired, refreshed from ice cream and happy from the positive vibes of the bright yellow.

Here are a few ways you can have the best experience while at the Color Factory: • Visit on a weekday for shorter lines • Take your photos from outside the wall of ribbons not within • Don’t forget to use the giant green marker while in the room with drawings on the wall • Be patient with any cute kids playing too long in the confetti room Overall, with the many creative displays of color, photo opportunities, free treats and various chances for interactive fun, the Color Factory is worth the trip. For the budding photographer, it’s a chance to hone in on your skills. For the art enthusiast, a wonderful display of creativity. For those who just want a place to have fun with friends, it’s full of silly memories and laughs. The Color Factory has something to offer almost everyone.

Let’s spill the tea

Students and workers alike get so caught up in today’s fast-paced world that grabbing a quick cup of coffee seems easier than drinking tea.

Health is important, and often, the option of tea is overlooked.

Tea is an accessible, flavorful and healthy option, as it can be found in many places including convenience and/or grocery stores, in addition to coffee and tea shops.

Often times, tea shops offer a wide selection and variety of blends and tea types. A few popular tea shops are DAVIDsTea, Rue du The and the online store of T2.

DAVIDsTea team member Thomas Grier and former Teavana employee Sabrina Shaker explained the different health benefits that come with each different kind of tea. In order to understand which of the different benefits will be most helpful, it is important to understand the different kinds and categories of tea. “[Tea] is incredibly versatile,” Grier said. “There is a flavor for every palate, and you can mix any kind of fruit, any kind of spice in it.”

There are thousands of kinds of tea divided into five main categories of tea: white, green, black, oolong and herbal teas.

Some additional types would be mate, pu erh, and rooibos.

Tea can be used as an alternative for those who need a little less coffee or sugary beverages in their life but also need that extra kick of energy or flavor. Loose leaf tea, in particular, is known to be a great substitute for sugary fruit juices due to its strong naturally sweet flavor without the calories and sugar of juice or soda.

“I prefer coffee,” Patricia Laude, a Skyline College student said.

“Tea has less caffeine than coffee.

I also prefer the taste of coffee, especially when it’s sweetened and with milk. In contrast, I prefer my teas black.”

Laude is not alone in this.

Many students will opt for coffee because they find it has more caffeine. With that noted, students and coffee drinkers should be

aware that while most teas’ caffeine levels might not be as high, there are teas that are very caffeinated.

Shaker explained that teas such as matcha green tea can include caffeine at levels similar to coffee.

Two teaspoons of matcha tea can be equivalent to coffee, yet has the benefits of no jitters or crash due to its smooth release of caffeine.

“Matcha’s caffeine level doesn’t increase suddenly, instead it increases throughout the day,” Shaker said.

Malik Houston, a psychology major at Skyline College, explained that he personally doesn’t drink coffee, and he highly prefers getting tea, or soda compared to coffee.

“I think people are too reliant on

coffee,” said Houston. “You never hear anyone say, ‘I need tea in the morning to operate.”

Houston prefers tea because it has more variety of flavors and is not as strong as coffee. He also believes that the “coffee cult” can become an addiction and is too strong for his pleasing.

For those like Houston who like an alternative, tea is said to be less addictive and has multiple health benefits. It is a great option for those who need a break from the typical cup of joe.

Tea has always been around but it has never really had a big hype built around it. If you’re looking to escape coffee or want a healthy beverage, maybe give it a chai and move oolong from coffee. It just might be your cup of tea.

More Bobby, less Logic

Logic flexed on his latest mixtape “Bobby Tarantino II”, his break from the deeply complex and socially conscious topics allowed for his strengths to flourish. The trap production style on “Yuck” and “Wizard of Oz” gave him the perfect opportunity to boast, and the eerie samples combined with crisp hi-hats compliment Logic’s concise flow that seamlessly hops from track to track.

The alter ego of the Grammy nominated artist made his debut in 2016 with “Bobby Tarantino I” when his fans experienced the true range of his versatility. The

second iteration of the Tarantino tapes gave Logic the freedom, once again, to express his more egotistical side and proved that he is not just the “suicide hotline guy”. “Bobby Tarantino II” has carefully selected beats that showcase his full spectrum of rhyme schemes.

“Warm it up”, a standout track on the mixtape, highlights Logic’s effortless ability to rap double time without losing a single syllable of lyricism. This track features Young Sinatra, who is Logic’s original alternate ego on his first trilogy of mixtapes.

Logic’s exclusive producer 6ix came through with flawless production throughout the tape.

The knocking bass, sharp snares

and beat breaks on “Contra” give the mix tape a quintessential trap sound that Logic thrived on.

6ix also included retro sounds on “BoomTrap Protocol” that provided a vital balance to “Bobby Tarantino II” that was missing from his third studio album.

With the great amount of turmoil we are currently experiencing in the US, artists can not be afraid to address the tough topics in society. Logic is one of the few mainstream rappers who consistently provides a deeper meaning in his lyrics, but he sounds much better when he is lighthearted and free flowing.

Logic is at his highest point of popularity, and he is not showing

any signs of slowing down.

“Bobby Tarantino II” provided his extended fan base with an unforgiving and fearless range of track variation that stretched from electronic collaboration with Marshmello on “Everyday” to a smooth “Dilla swing” type beat on “Indica Badu”.

People were skeptical of the “Bobby Tarantino” sequel, but it exceeded all expectations.

Logic’s latest album “Everybody” was his weakest release yet, and I was unsure if he could still bring out the unrelenting and cocky side of his persona. “Bobby Tarantino II” proved me wrong.

Aside from music, Bobby

recently announced a divorce with his wife of two years, Jessica Andrea. This unfortunate circumstance will most likely have an impact on his music moving forward, and although a divorce is never easy, his statement on Instagram provided a glimpse into the mutual understanding of both of them being happier as friends.

The future of the rap scene is unclear; however, if Bobby can stay in his flex zone the hits will continue. Logic consistently puts out a variety of music that appeals to a wide range of listeners giving him a prominent position among relevant rap artists. In order to maintain his new found momentum, we need more Bobby and less Logic.

Loyola Chicago Ramblers' good luck charm tells it like it is

It sad to say that there will be no miracle team this year for winning a championship as midnight stuck on this Cinderella team, Loyola University Chicago Ramblers. The loss in the Final Four of the men's NCAA Tournament to the University of Michigan was by 12 points yet there's still a bright side to recognize after this disappointing result.

For the Ramblers, no matter what challenge they faced, they always had faith, and their inspiration driven by Sister Jean Schmidt who has been part of Loyola Chicago men’s basketball team since 1994.

As chaplain of the men’s basketball team, she always took her job seriously as she goes well and beyond the call of duty. For example she emails the players after games in order to give them tips on their progress.

Before nearly every home game, she would be courtside near where the players would sit to greet them.

From an interview with blogger Joyce Duriga, Sister Jean expressed her love for the Ramblers.

“I love every one of them (the players),” Schmidt said.

“I talk about the game to them, and then they go out and play.”

Another thing she does before the home games is lead a prayer with the team.

“I always pray that we don’t get injured, that we play with great sportsmanship, and that we be respectful toward each other. I think that’s very important," Schmidt said.

“We pray to win because we’re in competition. When you’re in competition, you want to win,” Schmidt said.

“If that’s the way God wants it, it’s fine.”

Their prayers weren’t completely heard as the team lost in the Final Four which was a crushing defeat. They were two wins away from winning the national championship. However, the world

should not forget about the story of this underdog team and how they rose into the limelight.

This team received their label as a 'Cinderella Team' due to not just winning each round in the NCAA tournament as a 11 seed, but in the manner in which they won.

In the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, during the first round as 64 teams are set to play, hardly anybody expected a little team like the Ramblers to make any kind of run. However until the very end they seemed to have something special up their sleeve that helped them be victorious.

As you examine each of their games, chills would form along your back. In the round of 64 they were down to the University of Miami by 7 points after 14 minutes left in the game. As Miami was looking to gain control of the game, Loyola Chicago rallied back to get themselves in position to win the game.

After a couple of lucky breaks that worked in the Ramblers' favor, it set up the final possession of the game.

Down by one, they pushed the ball up the court looking for a game winning shot, and they got it off the hands of forward Donte Ingram.

As the ball reached his hands he threw up a fearless shot beyond the three point arc and hit nothing but net as the final seconds of the game ticked away. Loyola Chicago was able to come out with a win.

In the second round of the tournament against Tennessee they confidently put themselves in a comfortable lead up seven points with six minutes to go. However,

nothing is ever given as Tennessee came trumping back and with 20 seconds left they took the lead.

The Loyola team stayed optimistic as they had to draw up another game winning play, and this shot will not be stopped. As Clayton Cluster awkwardly throws up a wild looking shot as he tumbles to the ground, the world froze as it bounced up and down on the rim of the basket. Then the ball just miraculously falls in and, they survived and advance.

They also survived a late surge by Nevada in the Sweet Sixteen to advance to the Elite Eight. Further, they dominated in that game and advanced to final four.

There is no doubt that there was something magical about that time in the early goings of this year's tournament.

Even though they did not accomplish the overall goal of winning a championship, they still went a far distance than most believed. Even Sister Jean in her bracket had her team finished by the Sweet Sixteen round.

There was a definite divine intervention with this team, and that's probably the main reason why they may have gotten so far. What you can take away from this Loyola Chicago team is that definitely having faith can take you farther than you thought was possible.

On March 27, 2018, the NFL owners voted unanimously (32-0) to change the definition of catch for the NFL rulebook.

Here are the presented rules. The new rules defining a catch include: •Control of the ball.

•Two feet down or another body part.

•A football move such as: A third step, reaching/extending for the line-to-gain •Or the ability to perform such an act.

All of this is an effort to eliminate the gray area of catch rule by tossing out the going to the ground element that has everyone frustrated.

Infamous past calls such as Dez Bryant's, wide receiver of the Dallas Cowboys, got his catch overturned from

a catch to an incomplete pass in the 2014 NFC championship games. As Bryant was going to the ground, the ball moved around in his arms thus making the pass incomplete.

In more recent memory, in the week 15 game of the 2017 season, Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jesse James dove and extended his arms to catch the ball and go into the end zone for a touchdown. Unfortunately, on his way to the ground, the ball popped out. That cost the Steelers the game and the spot in the playoff that year.

However, this new rule change does not alter anything to make a catch rule more clear. Instead, it made it more vague, especially with more vagueness of the language when it comes to the ability to make a football move.

The rule change is going to cause more issues regarding people's own interpreta-

tion instead of what should be clean cut if the caught ball is in bounds.

By taking away the incomplete ruling of going to the ground, it is going to lead to increase in fumble calls.

For me, another issue is that using the ground to help secure a catch because now, going to the ground can be considered a football move even though they might not even have complete possession of the ball.

These are suppose to be professionals at the craft of playing football. This rule change is unnecessarily needed because there has been some controversial calls.

There are winners and losers to every competition. Just because calls don’t go the way you should be doesn’t mean you should get rid of that element.

It’s more on the players not make the plays well enough to win. Instead of being upset at the catch rule, they should train harder to cleanly catch the ball.

No hype for US soccer

Skyline soccer team for two seasons now and as a soccer enthusiast, she believes that the sport isn’t getting as much recognition as it should.

“Mostly because they’re more stuck on the ‘traditional’ American way which is watching more of football and baseball,” Campo said. “Soccer is of a sport that’s appreciated mostly in like Europe and South America.”

The main reason why many Americans can't really embrace the sport is that the MLS is considered to be a league where most of the Europeans stop playing after their golden era is done which doesn't

really attract a lot of people because most don't follow European soccer.

Fans like Paulina are the ones that help keep the culture of soccer alive here in the U.S. They go to every club game, every national team game, they also tweet about the games, which help bring more attention because they create hashtags so everyone can see.

In 2016 the U.S. Soccer Federation took one more shot at helping to bring the popularity to the sport by bringing the oldest tournament in soccer history for the first time on American

For the last few decades, soccer has been the most dominant sport in the whole world except in the United States.

Here, in the U.S., people tend to cherish World Series games and Super Bowl Sunday that are both annual, while everyone else just waits four years to see the World Cup. The question at hand is will soccer ever be embraced by Americans?

In 1994, the United States hosted the World Cup with a chance of making the sport popular and also to bring in a lot of revenue.

According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, the 1994 World Cup brought in 3,587,538 spectators to the tournament making it the most successful that FIFA has ever had.

A year before the big tournament, the MLS was created and with the help of the World Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation thought that the sport will become an instant hit along with the other American sports.

Unfortunately, the hype of U.S. soccer never had their big break like the other sports did. For example, an MLS cup final, brings in about 803,000 according to ESPN, does not get the same amount of audiences as a Super Bowl does, which is about 103.4 million according to Nielsen, and probably never will.

But on the other hand, according to FIFA, the World Cup draws about 3.2 billion viewers that is more than both MLS cup final and the super bowl. Also, MLS and Super Bowl are most likely only shown in the U.S. while the World Cup is shown all over the world.

This tournament consist of all the South American countries and six North and Central American countries.

It definitely did bring a lot of people to the games because world-class athletes that played in Europe were being advertised like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Alexis Sanchez, etc.

"I went to the opening game which was U.S. vs Colombia at Levi Stadium the whole crowd was all Colombians there was one section for the U.S.," said Campo.

"So obviously we are not as committed for soccer as we

are for other sports."

The only problem was that there was barely any American supporters that went for the U.S. most fans went out to support other countries that had the big stars or only went to just experience a very important soccer game that could very well happen once in a lifetime.

The 2016 Copa America did have an attendance of about 1.5 million throughout the 32 games according to the U.S. Soccer Federation.

Also according to Forbes, more than 100 million people saw the games either on Fox or on Univision, which happens to be a Spanish network.

U.S. soccer was getting ready to show Americans in the summer that soccer should be considered to be a popular sport in this country and it is worth watching, but unfortunately, they did not qualify and will have to wait another four years to bring the hype back to the sport.

"If they were in the world cup, I feel like more people would watch it and see their country playing and they would go out and drink and watch the game like any other sport," said Paulina Campo.

Currently, the U.S. Soccer Federation has a bid to host the 2026 World Cup with neighboring countries Mexico and Canada. They will find out if they get to host in mid-May before this summer's World Cup.
