The ballots were counted and Skyline’s new leaders have been appointed. Kayla Razavi, newly-elected student body president, began jumping up and down in the ASSC room immediately after the announcement of her new position. After a few minutes of riding that high, she stated, “This is unreal. I felt like I was the underdog going into this.” Experienced after being a senator for a semester, she stepped into her role quickly and confidently to deliver a message to readers, “Student body, I wont let you down. I will be the change that I promised I would be. I will give real solutions to real problems…I

Having enjoyed her time with Skyline’s ASSC, she decided to run for a position with more influence. “As the vice president, I want to give the whole student body a little more unity and a little more inspiration to join clubs,” Sanchez said. Andrea Garcia ran for financial commissioner after a year of experience as a senator from 2012 to 2013. During this time she also focused on student participation in campus clubs and events. Garcia took a different spin on the issue,

- Tuition-freeze proposed for CSU and UC campuses Gov. Jerry Brown’s latest budget proposal includes a four-year tuition freeze for CSU and UC institutions. This new proposal shifts away from the decrease in education-related spending he pitched previously to legislators. Brown also calls for community college funding based on the number of

deciding to work on the financial aspect. Thinking back on last semester, Garcia recalled that, “a lot of people would come to the ASSC for funding requests. I saw that there were some people who were really deserving of the money and didn’t get what they wanted and other people didn’t really deserve it but they got more than I thought was right… I want to see the money distributed in a different way.” Bryan Palma has been elected commissioner of Publicity. Ryan Sherlock has been the commissioner of public records for the past two semesters and was re-elected for this coming fall. United States Ambassador to Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, and Tuvalu Frankie A. Reed spoke about the significance of gaining experience working oversea for a NGO or the government. The event kicked off at 11 a.m. with Ambassador Reed talking about the US role in the Pacific and how it helps the various island nations their deal with both global and local issues that affect them, such as global warming and how the raising oceans are forcing them to move “This was excellent, I get as much out and more out of these events then the audiences because I’ve been away for six months, and so it’s a chance for me to become more current, and also because I

just left university, and I find that it’s a comfortable environment,” Ambassador Reed said. Ambassador Reed was a diplomat in residence at UC Berkely. This isn’t the first time that Ambassador Reed has spoken at this kind of event. New Associate degrees to ease transfer process

Guaranteed admission for aspiring CSU students by Aaron Washington TSV Social Media Editor

The state of California has mandated new transfer degrees for the Fall 2013 semester to assist in students in transferring to CSU and UC campuses. The Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) and the Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) apply to Business Administration, Kinesiology, Mathematics, and Psychology majors. Other majors that are included are Communications and Early Childhood Education. Certain requirements to obtain these degrees include completing 60 CSU transferable units, the CSU General Education Requirements or CSU, and the required major requirements. Students are

also required to follow guidelines laid out by the IGETC. Students who earn either an AA-T or an AS-T degree and meet the CSU minimum eligibility requirements are guaranteed admission to a CSU, but they are not guaranteed admission to one particular campus or major. Other benefits from these degrees include guaranteed admissions with junior standing to the CSU system and priority admissions consideration for students’ local CSU campuses. Jacqueline Escobar, a transfer-degree counselor, feels the degrees make transferring easier. “The process of transferring to four year colleges is very complicated for students,” said Escobar. “So these degrees were mandated Degree continued on page 2
