Students walk out for change

Swaths assembled on the quad in favor of a safer, more inclusive campus Hundreds of Skyline students gathered on the quad to raise awareness about communication, among other issues, between the school and its students at the SMCCD walkout on Monday Nov. 21.

Students were encouraged to stand up and walk out of class Monday morning and come together to show support for one another after the results of the 2016 election, among other issues they saw as important.

As a crowd of students formed on Skyline’s quad, student Alfredo Olgín Jr. led the crowd with his thoughts and feelings about what it means to stand in unity. Olgín also presented a list of proposed changes as he spoke.

One of the first demands listed by Olgín was the continuation of protection for illegal immigrants. Olgín further continued with demands for transparency and equity between all three campuses. Safety for all students was a concern as well.

“We don’t need to worry about the power of the police,” he said. “We don’t need to worry about the power of the dollar. We have the power of love, we have the power of unity, and we make the difference.”

Students showed their support for his message by holding signs that read “#SMCCDSTUDENTSOLIDARITY” and “SMCCD RISE UP” as he spoke.

After Olgín Jr. spoke, the mic was then opened up to any students that wanted to share or voice their concerns and needs on campus.

One volunteer speaker opened up on sexual abuse, and how it not only had affected her personally, but also how it can affect others as well.

After the speaker opened up, others came to the podium with their own words on similar problems.

Following the open mic was a collection of call and response chants followed by a rhythmic drum beat.

Student voices responded in unison.

Similar events also happened on College of San Mateo and Canada College campuses. However, it is unknown if future actions will be taken.

Make district communication easier After a walkout occurred at Skyline on Nov. 23, The Skyline View’s editorial board thought it seemed important to find out what resources students actually have at their disposal to communicate to administration.

The group “Solidarity” is the Skyline student group organization that originally coordinated the walk out. This group is a student organization within the district.

In order to successfully hold a walkout, this group had to sign a form through Student Life that would allow the administration to review the group’s demands for the protest. The administration doesn’t wish to censor the students, but are required to be made aware of what the walkout entailed.

The walkout itself is a drastic step to take just to feel heard on a college campus. And while there are some other, more beurocratic routes to take, they aren’t very clear or easy to use.

The primary outlet students can use is ASSC meetings.

Students can attend an ASSC meeting and present any issues or matters concerning them. Student Life considers this way to be more efficient, but many students could run into several problems here.

The meetings are held only once a week, frpm 4 pm to 6 pm.

Unfortunately, some students may not be able to make the meeting,

“But maybe there is room for improvement in allowing students to express issues that impact them, either as an individual or a community.” due to work and the commonly overloaded schedule of students today. Or they may have to miss a class to attend.

It also doesn’t address immediate and timely concerns that can’t just wait for the next meeting. Are those students issues

then pushed aside or can no longer be heard?

The ASSC prides itself on representing skyline students on campus with district issues as well as being a “responsive campus climate that encourages open communication.” But maybe there is room for improvement in allowing students to express issues that impact them, either as an individual or a community.

A simple solution could be the addition of a complaint form that students can get from the main office in building 2, fill out, and return. Including student email or contact information can help administration reach the students and address their complaints more directly.

Alternatively, an online form could be implemented. The goal is to create a first step for students who feel unheard. Walking out of class and making such an active statement should be a last resort, not a first step.

A tax we should all agree on

Taxes suck. They really do. Trust me, I’m just as unhappy as you when I look at my paycheck and see that I actually earned X but I’m only being paid Y because Uncle Sam took it from me and there’s nothing I can do about it because, well, he’s America and I’m just a guy who sometimes puts his underwear on backwards.

In practical terms, we do it because not only the law demands we do but also because we know (or hope) it goes to making improvements in schools, roads, hospitals, our military and a myriad of other taxpayer funded institutions. However, the tax code of today is too complicated, ineffective and unfair to wholly serve its ideals. Want to hear about a tax that doesn’t suck? It’s called the land value tax, or LVT. Now I know it doesn’t sound sexy but bear with me here folks. Real estate is all about location and most values in land increase from the activity of the outside world. Landowners profit off unearned income from proximity to good transit links, customers, supplies and other businesses.

You can make huge amounts of profit just by sitting on your butt if you own valuable land.

So why not tax this?

Economists have long expressed their love for the land value tax from Adam Smith who said “nothing could be more reasonable” to Milton Friedman who referred to it as the “least bad tax.” Yet none more so than Henry George whose 1879 work Progress and Poverty argued that a land value tax should replace all other forms of taxation thus allowing labor and capital to operate freely thus ending unemployment, inflation, poverty and inequality.

Most modern economists do not go this far but still support the idea strongly.

The wonderful thing about the LVT is that nothing you do can affect the tax because it is entirely dependent on the value of the land itself. If you improve the structure of a building or add an extra story the LVT won’t raise like it would with a property tax, and if you make more money doing whatever you do with the land, the LVT won’t raise like it would with an income tax. The tax burden

on you would only increase if the value of the land itself increased, which occurs when the local economy becomes more vibrant and productive, thereby attracting more people to work and live there.

If you are a landlord you will be able to charge more for people to live in your building and if you are a business owner it will increase sales and income thus allowing you the purchasing power to keep up with higher LVT payments. This would not totally solve gentrification in neighborhoods like the Mission or West Oakland, but there’s no doubt it could help tremendously.

Furthermore, the LVT would shift the tax burden from the individual to the productivity of the local economy itself. It would incentivise good economic behavior like development, improving or hiring more people instead of jacking up rents while you’re landlord turns into a fatter, less charming Rockefeller. It could even help alleviate urban sprawl by encouraging people to build up, which would certainly be a popular aspect amongst environmentalists.

The LVT could help limit urban blight and land hoarding because it would encourage development since land value would be predicated upon economic productivity.

The tax could raise huge amounts of revenue that would allow for us to roll back and reform much of the present day tax code but more importantly that revenue could go toward a more generous social safety net in regards to things like Medicare or food stamps and perhaps even a universal basic income.

The land value tax seems like such a no brainer but those in Sacramento and Washington are unlikely to pass a LVT bill anytime soon. Big time real estate owners and developers have been getting rich off the status quo and have funded many a politician to ensure things stay as they are so don’t expect a LVT tomorrow. However, if we the public show enough support for the land value tax and demand our voices be heard the status quo will have to chang-ahhh who am I kidding? They’ll never pass this, it makes too much sense!

If you want it, go get it Another end to another semester, but this time it’s a little different. The end of this semester marks my last semester being a part of The Skyline View editorial staff, which is bittersweet to say the least.

The newsroom taught me many lessons over the two years I lived in it. There’s the obvious ones like meeting deadlines, and the harder ones like managing other humans that are aiming to meet your deadlines.

However the lesson that I’m going to value the most for the rest of my life is a pretty basic rule: if you want something you have to go out and get it yourself.

Although this is an idea I was already familiar with, I hadn’t given it much serious thought throughout my life, especially in my own education. Pre-TSV I was just another aimless, undeclared community college student.

Once I joined TSV, I felt like I had more purpose and there was a reason for the work I was doing. Did you know that once you start trying hard, the results of your work are more satisfying? Funny how that works.

So even though I’m moving out of the newsroom, I won’t stop applying that idea in my everyday life. Because of my new found drive, I’ve earned two scholarships this year and made the Dean’s List. I hope my story can inspire you, dear reader, to go out and work diligently for what you want to achieve.

Well, guys, looks like that’s it. You might see my name pop up here and there, but for now stay groovy, Skyline.

Grinding up Proposition 64

Last month’s general election caused distress among many across the country, and the shellshock from its results can still be felt resonating through the media and popular culture. Luckily for some Californians, a ballot measure was passed that will allow the disaffected and disillusioned to smoke their troubles away and forget about all that is to come.

Proposition 64, otherwise known as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, officially legalizes the recreational consumption of marijuana, and regulates the growth, distribution, and sale of cannabis products. While it provides relief for those who choose to use marijuana recreationally, it does not mean that the streets of California are in for a smoke-filled “Reefer Madness” style romp. Here, we will break down the law and find out exactly the do’s and don’ts concerning the now-legal drug.

Open all the windows and turn a fan on at to air out the smell, because Prop 64 allows consumption to occur only in a private home. So next time you’re stuck at out to dinner with your significant other’s parents, you will not be able to sneak out for a quick puff of relief in public.

Side note: That includes operating motor vehicles. The law upholds previous driving under the influence laws, and driving high is a DUI. The plastic bottles, bags and containers that your weed comes in also count as open containers, and cannot be within reach of the vehicles operator, just like alcohol. Don’t be that guy that gets behind the wheel after getting high. It is dangerous, and against the law.

While you can’t fulfill your dreams of going for a morning stroll and dishing out a nice dose of “wake and bake,” you now can legally possess up to 28.5 grams of marijuana in public at one time, and eight grams of concentrates. But don’t go pick up the kids from school with a doobie in your pocket either, because all cannabis products are prohibited on school, daycare, and youth center grounds.These places are still drug and alcohol free zones.

The prospect of going to your local supermarket and picking up a pack of joints, a frozen pizza and a box of Cocoa Puffs for a “lit” Saturday night may seem like a dream come true to frequent users of the drug, but that is farfetched as of right now, because a state license will be required for businesses to sell cannabis products, similarly to alcohol.

On top of that, six state agencies will regulate different aspects of the marijuana cultivation and sale process.

For all of you gardeners out there hoping to spruce up your front lawn with some greenery, you will have to stick with a nice fichus or fern, because the legally allotted amount of six marijuana plants grown per private home (for personal use only) must be kept out of view from the public.

Drugs and music have gone hand in hand for decades, so it should be no surprise that the two are only getting closer.

While it seems obvious that the legalization of marijuana could end up saving lives, either by easing pain or preventing prison, it may be a bit surprising to think that it may save music too.

In September of this year, the Amoeba Music on Telegraph Ave. was approved to become one of the six licensed dispensaries in Berkeley. Another not so surprising fact, considering the Haight location has housed Green Evaluations, a medical marijuana evaluation center, since 2014.

Despite the current trending interest in records and cassettes, many local records stores are still losing profits. As Amoeba Records co-founder Marc Weinstein said in an interview with Billboard last year, the Berkeley location is only making half of what it was in 2008.

“We’ve added all kinds of T-shirts, merchandise and other stuff to our product mix and none of that amounts to enough,” Weinstein told Billboard. “It just barely pays our expenses at this point.”

In contrast, Weinstein said the revenue from Green Evaluations alone covers half of the annual rent for that location.

Economics aren’t the only reason the record store plans to house a dispensary though. After getting approval for the first dispensary this year, Weinstein

told KQED that it is a business he strongly believes in. He certainly isn’t alone in that regard either.

This year, a number of celebrities have taken to supporting legalization Proposition 64 through “Artists for 64.” The group is a coalition of musicians and actors that support Proposition 64. Among those listed on the site are Jay Z, Olivia Wilde, Common, and Sarah Silverman.

Beyond this smaller organized grouping also lies the obvious advocates, artists like Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa who have actually put out their own brands and strains of cannabis. A surprising number of other groups have taken to including smoking paraphernalia in their merchandise as well: Rings of Saturn has an “herb” grinder, Chuck Billy of Testament has a signature vaporizer, and a number of artists have included rolling papers with some editions of their albums.

The music scene has never shied away from weed, and it seems that the country itself is starting to see why. During the last fiscal year (July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015), the Colorado Department of Revenue stated that it claimed almost $70 million in taxes on marijuana alone.

In the same year, taxes on alcohol amounted to under $42 million.

The economic impact of legalizing and taxing cannabis in California may turn out to be farther reaching than originally anticipated, bolstering smaller communities and helping keep some local businesses in business.

Unfortunately, there will be no legallysanctioned celebratory joints with friends after high school graduation. The law limits the growth, possession, purchase, and consumption age of cannabis products to 21.

A wise man named Benjamin Franklin once said “Nothing is certain but Death and Taxes”. Contrary to the belief of those who have watched the aforementioned film “Reefer Madness”, marijuana will not kill you, but in this case, Uncle Sam’s wallet will definitely be becoming a little greener.

A tax of $9.25 for flowers and $2.75 for leaves will be imposed on growers, along with a 15 percent tax on the retail sales of cannabis products. Under the provisions in Prop 64, proceeds will be allocated for marijuana research, DUI programs, drug education and prevention programs, and youth programs across the state.

While Proposition 64 will not be enforced in its entirety until 2018, when current medical dispensaries can acquire a recreational sale license, possession and private consumption of marijuana became legal on November 9, 2016 at midnight.

Must see stoner movies

The “weed” culture is highly prevelant in the media, especially in music and movies. There are countless amounts of movies that focus on the green bud. Most movies are comedies that follow the misadventures of stoners. There are some many types of these movies that the subgenre “stoner comedy” was born.

Whether you indulge in the high or are merely fascinated by the “weed” culture, here are ten comedies that will titillate your funny-bone, high or not.

“Fast times at Ridgemont High” (1982)

This is the only movie on this list not considered a stoner comedy. “Fast times at Ridgemont High” is a cult classic comedy with two subplots that revolve around the characters Sean Penn and Judge Reinhold play. Although this movie is not considered a stoner comedy, it has a lot of references to marijuana thanks to Penn’s character. This movie stays funny while subtly giving a lesson to the audience.

“The Big Lebowski” (1998)

A stoner comedy that initially received negative reviews and slowly gained cult status, aging like a fine wine. “The Big Lebowski” is a comedy about a middle aged slacker, self-titled “The Dude,” played by Jeff Bridges. It’s a funny movie that pokes at middle-aged people who have yet to accomplish anything in their life. I guess you can say it is an “high” opener to some people.

“Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” (2004)

The most ethnically diverse movie on this list starring John Cho and Kal Penn, who are Korean-American and Indian-American respectively. “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” spun-off two other movies with similar misadventures all relating to smoking. A hilarious series that will make you forget you’ve been sitting around for about five hours watching a movie and chillin’. You may find yourself with the munchies after this one, though.

“Up in Smoke” (1978)

The movie that is credited for starting the stoner genre, “Up in Smoke” stars the famous weed smoking comedy duo, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. “Up in Smoke” is a major cult classic that continues to influence stoner comedies to this day. Although it initially got mixed reviews, like the “The Big Lebowski,” it is a cornerstone of comedy today. It’s a movie that probably had your parents laughing, and will definitely make you laugh too.

“Pineapple Express” (2008)

Probably one of the most popular stoner comedies on this list, especially among the millennials. The movie stars comedy duo James Franco and Seth Rogen, who are considered the modern day Cheech and Chong. However, what differentiates Franco and Rogen from other duos is their chemistry on and off the screen. Beyond them, “Pineapple Express” references weed so much they named a strain after it. It’s a hilarious comedy that will have you laughing so much you’ll think you’re high, unless you already are.

“This is the End” (2013) Another movie from Franco and Rogen. Not only did “This is the End” focus on the duo, but also showcased their whole gang of pot smoking actors, like Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson. Their chemistry as a group is hysterical. This movie is nothing but cameo after cameo, but it doesn’t feel like it is just thrown in the movie, they add a lot of personality. And of course, this movie had an exorbitant amount of weed, otherwise it wouldn’t be a stoner comedy.

“Ted” (2012)

“Ted” is a movie about the misadventures of 35-year-old John Bennet, played by Mark Wahlberg, and his best friend Ted, a living teddy bear voiced by Seth MacFarlane. Although it seems like it follows the formula of “two smoking buds,” it changes it up a bit with Ted not being a person. It’s a funny, fresh new take, on the stoner comedy genre that will really tap into your childhood if you had a stuffed animal you were closely attached to as a child.

“Dude where’s my car?” (2000) Have you ever seen something so bad it’s good? Well “Dude where’s my car?” is kind of like that, it’s so bad you can’t help but laugh about how bad it is. The general consensus of this movie was negative.

Most movies on this list got negative reviews, but this takes the cake. So why is this movie on the list?

Because it truly is so bad that it’s good. You will laugh at how terrible the acting, jokes, setting, and story are. It’s chaotically funny, and will make you laugh.

“Half Baked” (1998) A stoner comedy starring Dave Chappelle, need I say more? Fine, Dave Chappelle is in it, do yourself a favor and go watch it.

“How High” (2001)

Like practically all movies on this list, this is a misadventure of two stoner best friends. “How High” stars Method Man and Redman, both rappers that have dabbled in acting. The plot is simple, but the jokes are funny and the references are on point.

The city’s finest clubs

Living in a world where the best medical (and soon to be recreational) marijuana is grown in our backyard, it’s easy to feel slightly overwhelmed with all the storefronts that San Francisco has to offer. Here’s a list of the top three dispensaries you can visit to get top shelf medicine which reaffirms the fact that California is, indeed, the Mecca of marijuana.

Sparc Sparc is one of San Francisco’s premier dispensaries and offers a wide variety of products and services to its patients. It is located in the heart of SoMa and offers an hour of free validated parking at the SoMa Grand Garage. And if you decide to skip the headache of finding parking in the city, the club is easily accessible by foot from the Civic Center BART station.

It also happens to be one of the very few locations where you can enjoy your medicine inside the facility. However, you are limited to consumption in the form of vape. There is a row of tables and benches with very expensive Volcano Vaporizers for use.

The storefront offers a very chic and elegant look, both on the outside and inside. The exterior of the building displays a precipitating grid of patterned glass and steel which is meant to loosely resemble the molecular design of marijuana. Meanwhile the interior of the location is dressed in concrete and reclaimed wood.

In fact, the dispensary received a prestigious award in 2011 for Excellence in Interior Architecture from the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architecture.

Aside from the design of the establishment, Sparc separates itself from other competitors with the services it offers. They host a weekly game night where you can revisit your childhood by playing games like Battleship, Clue, Sorry, and Uno. They also host a monthly Jazz series where patients can enjoy two hours of live music, and is used as an alternative place for people to go instead of a bar or nightclub. But more notably, it offers weekly acupuncture services for patients to relieve the stress one can endure from life’s daily grind.

Sparc is conveiently located around the corner from the Civic Center BART Station at 1256 Mission St San Francisco, CA 94103 and offers a plethora of services for its patients.

Barbary Coast Barbary Coast is just a few blocks down the street from Sparc, conveniently located a block away from the Mission Street Garage. This is another establishment that distinguishes itself from the rest as the interior resembles an old-school saloon.

The architecture of the building achieves the look of a modern day tavern with its exposed brick wall, as well as Victorian era couches and bar stools where patients can sit at the bar and physically flip through the pages of the menu. This is a nice touch seeing as most dispensaries show their menu on a brightly lit 4K television.

The flowers are contained in mason jars and the budtenders will scale out the product in front of you, which is becoming a rare sight these days as other dispensaries pre-weigh the product to reduce the waiting time during peak hours. They also carry over 20 strains at all times and offer a wide variety of edibles, concentrates, and pre-rolled joints.

Another reason why this establishment is held in such high regard is because they offer high quality medicine that is unmatched by its rivals.

They also have an amazing rewards program where you can get freebies after a certain price point. And if you’re a first time patient, they’ll hook you up with a free joint and edible.

They also have daily specials where patients are able to purchase a quarter ounce of flowers for $35, which is pretty cheap if you’re aware of the hefty price tag that comes along with medical marijuana.

For some time Medithrive was only offering delivery services, however after recent renovations, Medithrive is open for patients to visit at1933 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94103.

Medithrive could be considered the Apple store of dispensaries. You wouldn’t know it by looking at the building from the outside. However, once you walk in through the door, you’re presented with the opportunity to check out the density and freshness of the product under a magnifying glass.

Every strain that Medithrive offers is encased in a glass jar with bright lights shining against the product to showcase its beauty. It is conveniently located in another heavily populated area of the city where finding street parking is next to impossible. The easiest way to get to the dispensary is via the 16th Street BART station.

The dispensary closed its doors in 2011 but continued to offer its services in the form of a delivery service. But it reopened in 2015 after a half million dollar renovation that catapulted the business to become one of the main destinations for patients to get their medicine.

Medithrive also gives its patients some great deals when ordering products at their store. For example, they have a special where you can get two $25 eighths for $45. Sure, it’s only a $5 discount but think about the munchies you could get with that extra $5.

They also have a deal if you purchase two full price eighths, you get the third eighth for free. They don’t have a first time patient freebie but they do give you a nice package with rolling papers, a lighter, and other accessories.

And if you come in with a referral on a Saturday, you can get a 20 percent discount on your purchase.

In the wake of the legalization of recreational marijuana in California, Nevada and Massachusetts, it should be obvious why so many new series shows are cropping up with a green theme. It might be hard to sift through all of the trim for the great buds, but maybe this list will help you decide what new series you want to pick up next.

“The High Court” Comedy Central has picked up a new 15-minute series from comedian and marijuana activist Doug Benson, called “The High Court.” The title is actually fairly self-explanatory: the series is going to be a comedy court show, with Judge Doug presiding over real small-claims cases. After hearing both parties, Benson retires to his chambers with a guest bailiff and gets stoned. It is loosely based on Benson’s podcast “Getting Doug With High,” which has hosted guests like Jack Black, Sarah Silverman and Jeff Ross.

Hopefully this will be a great return to Comedy Central for Benson, who hasn’t had his own series on the station since “The Benson Interruption.”

“Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party” Weed and food go together so well that Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart decided to host a cooking show together on VH1. Each host gets to invite a guest to be on the other’s cooking team, and when the dishes are done all gather, with an extra guest judge, to eat, drink and laugh together. The first episode was a quintessential stoner spread, as Martha and Snoop faced off over fried chicken with their guests Seth Rogan, Wiz Khalifa and Ice Cube.

“High Maintenance” Co-created by and starring Ben Sinclair, this show follows “The Guy” that delivers weed to people in New York. The people he delivers too all have their own demons and eccentricities that make them who they are, and “High Maintenance” seeks to expose some of those private things people hide. This series is a different take on weed comedy, following a weed dealer’s brief glimpses into the lives of his customers as he makes his deliveries.

“Disjointed” An upcoming Netflix series already picked up for 20 episodes, “Disjointed” stars Oscar winner Kathy Bates as a marijuana advocate living in the Los Angeles area, fulfilling her dream of running a dispensary.

This series is slated to premiere in 2017.

“Mary + Jane” This low-rated MTV comedy produced by Snoop Dogg follows more marijuana entrepreneurs as they try to break into the ever growing industry. This series follows two best friends, Jordan and Paige, attempting to make their delivery service successful. The first episode aired in September of this year, and though the reception so far has been poor, the potential is there and it is possible the series will pick up in later seasons.

“Budding Prospects” Based on the novel of the same name, “Budding Prospects” is another comedy, but set in 1983 San Francisco. It stars Will Sasso as one of three boys that moves from the city to the country in the hopes of growing weed, only for them to realize how difficult the process is going to be. This series is being directed by “Bad Santa” director Terry Zwigoff, and will be an Amazon original series.

The elite smoke the competition away

Marijuana use in sports has not been a secret, and even some of the elite athletes advocate the drug in sports.

When picturing the elite athletes, recreational marijuana use is often not mentioned. With some reaching success in their respective fields, it shows that recreational smoking does not hinder an athlete’s ability.

Arguably the biggest weed advocate in sports is former NFL running back Ricky Williams. His marijuana use was spoken about in the short film “Ricky Williams Takes the High Road,” produced

by Sports Illustrated.

“It started to become a daily ritual after practice, and it did coincide with an injury,” Williams said in the film. “I fractured one of my ribs against the Rams and it didn’t seem like any medication took it out.”

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has admitted to marijuana use after a picture of him smoking from a bong surfaced in 2009.

Phelps lost sponsorships, and was given a three-month suspension, but his image as an Olympian was relatively untarnished.

Since his marijuana use was made public, Phelps went on to the 2012, and 2016 Olympics to win nine gold and three silver medals

making him the most decorated Olympian ever.

Disciplinary action for marijuana use varies from the different athletic commissions, as there is no set punishment for the offense.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended mixed martial artist Nick Diaz for five years along with a $100,000 fine for his third failed drug test.

Diaz is a prescribed weed patient under the California law to treat his Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Along with his brother Nate, the Diaz brothers are the biggest weed advocates in MMA and have often challenged

the policies.

Nate Diaz was seen smoking a vape pen after his UFC 202 fight against Conor Mcgregor and explained the positive effects of cannabis.

Tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC, is the most well known cannabinoid found in marijuana. It is the psychoactive component that primarily causes the “high” associated with the plant. Cannabidiol, more commonly referred to as CBD, is non-psychoactive and has the most medical potential of the cannabinoids. CBD does not cause the “high” associated with THC, and has been used recently to treat

seizures and other neurological disorders.

“It’s CBD,” Nate told reporters in a post-fight interview. “It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights training.”

All athletes struggle with recovery after competition and training. Marijuana is touted by many as the safest alternative to pain killers and opiates, which are often and easily abused.

Non-voting Skyline students highlight larger issues

Breaking social norms by speaking to loved ones is a great way to start. Rather than simply trying to convince others to vote, the professors suggest that students hold intimate discussions filled with accurate information.

Popal stressed that democracy is not a moment. Democracy is a process that takes place year round. Ultimately, every vote does count and college students should take advantage of their most basic democratic power.

Calacal realized the importance of voting only after she listened to the strong reactions from her peers post-election.

“I regret not voting this year, especially since Donald Trump won,” Calacal said. “I’m definitely more motivated to vote next time because I want to see change.”

Nothing matters more for Skyilne this weekend than the wrestling team’s regional tournament.

The Skyline wrestling team will be competing in the North Regional Wrestling Tournament on December 3. The team will bring nine wrestlers into the tournament, all with the hopes of becoming a state qualifier.

With the wrestling season coming to an end, the North Regional Tournament is the final stop before the state tournament.

Aspirations to be a state qualifier ride solely on this tournament, as only the top six in a weight class continue their season.

“No matter how we did at the previous tournaments this season,

our coaches always reminded us it was to prepare us for regionals and state,” Aaron Aquino said.

Team captain Brady Green has thrown away the results this season and is coming into the tournament with a fresh mindset.

“Even though there’s people better than me and have more wins, I don’t care about that,” Green said. “I don’t really care about the past losses. Even though I lost this past season I’m still trying to be a state champion.”

Accolades collected throughout the season mean a lot for the wrestler tournament ranking in the tournament. But once they hit the mat, it is up to them to prove that the season was not a fluke.

“I’ve been taking first and third all year,” wrestler Dupra Goodman said. “But right now, I’m just worried about placing top six at regionals, because regardless of

how high I’m ranked in state, it doesn’t mean anything if I don’t qualify.”

The grind of a wrestling season is tough. Injuries accumulate by the end of the season, and some wrestlers are starting to break down both mentally and physically.

“The toughest thing is sticking it out the whole season,” Green said. “A lot of the top guys in the weight class are already broken (mentally), injured or just quit.”

In college wrestling, nothing is given to the wrestlers. They must perform once they hit the center of the mat. Their performance in the North Regional Tournament will make or break their season “It’s college wrestling, anything can happen,” Goodman said. “But I got the mindset that I’m going to win and nothing’s going to stop me.”

With Skyline’s women’s volleyball season being over, their record of 7-18 should not overshadow the fact that the team’s accumulative GPA is a 3.79 and that’s something that should be celebrated.

Head coach Rayanna Salahuddin has been emphasizing the notion that her players should be more concerned with winning in the classroom than the court.

“We first start off with instilling the idea that the number one goal of the program is to graduate,” Salahuddin said. “If you don’t go to class, you don’t get to practice.”

It’s a great way to set up her students for success because there are no ifs, ands, or buts in the real world working environment.

This is a way to ensure that students do not feel overwhelmed by their workload and eventually stop caring about the quality of the work they produce.

Salahuddin has developed

a “SUCCESS” acronym which exemplifies the core values in which she runs her program.

It represents showing up, uncompromising coaches, class comes first, check daily, excellence through intention, schedule responsibly, and support your sister teammates.

“I used to procrastinate a lot,” Milicia Prarzic said. “But she’s helped me realize that I can play volleyball and do well in school at the same time”.

The “SUCCESS” model has guided Marlene Alcantara to maintain good grades. Because of the model, Alcantara has allowed herself to be eligible for different scholarship opportunities.

“I was taught that grades can affect what kind of scholarships I can get and that motivated me get good grades,” Alcantara said.

Salahuddin wants her athletes to stop being scared of having huge dreams. “Shoot for the moon; you’ll still fall among the stars,” Salahuddin said.

Sophomore night leaves players optimistic and grateful

The lady Trojans took a loss in their final game against Foothill, ending their series with a 7-18 record on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The first set of the game was a close one. Skyline was able to go toe-to-toe against their opponents.

Skyline’s blocker Jaichelle White, outside hitter Justice Afatasi and middle block Marisa Kealoha did their best to stop the Foothill offensive but it wasn’t enough.

The second and third sets tell the same story. However, during the last minutes of each set, the Trojans had trouble covering the floor to properly defend. As a result, Foothill’s offense just flowed like water and Skyline struggled to dig many of the opponent’s spikes.

Skyline’s freshmen did their part during the game but it just wasn’t enough to win a set. In

particular, Skyline’s middle block Raja Elliott made a few offensive as well as defensive plays.

“I’m really grateful for what the freshmen did for this game,” Skyline’s team captain Marlene Alcantara said. “I felt like we had a lot of energy during the first half and it just died down later on.”

On the positive, Skyline’s offense was up to par against Foothill, the visitors defense was just better in the last two sets.

Afatasi did a fine job attacking but was usually halted by the other team’s defense.

Overall, Skyline’s downfall was in their defense. They had some trouble covering the floor.

However, they have had improved on their hitting errors and reduced them.

Skyline’s sophomores also celebrated their last game during this match up. Some are looking forward to moving on to the next

level.

“I am planning on playing on the next level,” Alcantara said.

“My top choice right now is Bethany College and if I don’t get any better offers after the sophomore showcase then I will go with them.”

The sophomores expressed their good experience while playing for Skyline. A tough season like this one could have easily driven the team apart, but they stuck it out.

“It was a good season. It is hard to let it go because we’re such a close family,” middle blocker Kaitlyn Giubinni said. “I’m thankful for the time I had here and continue getting my major.”

“It was bitter-sweet because I love this team,” outside hitter Claire Hardiman said. “I didn’t regret all the losses because I had fun playing with this team.”
