Security forums reveal missing connections Knowledge disparity between faculty, students and Public Safety becomes evident

The Board of Trustees of the San Mateo County Community College District held Campus Safety Open Forums on Sept. 11-13 to gather information from administration, faculty, and students on how they feel about public safety on their campuses.

“The study would include information on all organization and operational aspects of campus public safety,” District Vice Chancellor Kathy Blackwood said in a press release. “As well as examples of best or smart practices.”

A Public Safety Services Committee was created with campus and district staff, and student representatives to “help guide the district’s research process and coordinate opportunities for discussion and participation,” Blackwood said.

The final draft of the report will be available to the public in November.

Other challenges included people feeling uneducated about who to call when when they see their colleagues in escalating altercations.

More open questions were raised by participating students who felt left in the dark when it came to public safety and the department itself, which led to the idea that students should get to know the the public safety officers and become more familiar with what their jobs entail.

It was mentioned how public safety officers are rarely seen on campus, and participating members of the forum suggested more of a presence from the department. A suggestion was also made to improve the diversity of officers, especially in terms of gender, considering all current public safety officers at Skyline are male.

In conclusion, it is evident that there is a disconnect between the Public Safety Department and people who attend and work at Skyline. In order to keep Skyline safe, a dramatic shift in education needs to be implemented across the campus. If we do not know how to keep ourselves safe, no one else can do it for us.

The Skyline College Promise Scholarship has been introduced on campus for students who have graduated from high school or hold a GED, or another equivalent to a high school diploma. The scholarship aims to give students the promise of a strong start to their college careers.

For the scholarship, students will have all enrollment fees for the first year they are enrolled covered, starting in either Fall 2016, Spring 2017, or Summer 2017. The enrollment, health, student rep, student union, and student body fees are the ones that will be covered.

This is the very first semester Skyline is offering the Promise Scholarship, and will continue on this path into Fall 2017 and possibly in future semesters.

In order to apply for the 2016-17 Promise Scholarship, students must submit their Promise Scholarship Application, apply for Financial

Aid, complete the New Student Orientation, complete Skyline’s Assessment process, meet with a counselor to discuss a Student Educational Plan, and register for classes with a minimum of 12 units.

“They have access to a lot of books from the bookstore, so there is no need to purchase books,” Cherie Colin, director of marketing, communication, and public relations at Skyline said. “There are 137 students not receiving fees.”

If you plan to be a part of the Promise Scholarship or are already a recipient, there are a couple things to keep in mind. Prospective students must enroll full-time with a minimum of 12 units for fall and spring semesters, must be an active student that will maintain a GPA of 2.0 and above, complete a Student Educational Program and declare a major by the beginning of Spring 2017.

The Skyline Promise is meant to encourage students to stay motivated at every point of their education at Skyline. The motto of the Skyline College Promise Scholarship is to: “Get in, get through, and get out on time!”

“Students should take advantage of the Promise Scholarship because there are students that have to work.”

Skyline student Sydnie La Rosa said.

“Paying nothing out of their pockets and having all of their student fees covered is a good benefit for everyone.”

Skyline wants high school students to be ready for college, improving the relationship and getting them excited for their education. The Promise Scholarship encourages students to stay committed on and off campus by giving support and resources to ensure the earning of a certificate. It will encourage everyone to be on track with

everything, especially graduating with a certificate on time.

One counseling appointment goes a long way It’s no secret that most tries to serve. Between serving students in higher education get nearly 10,000 students who all stuck quite a lot. The truth train was chugging hard last Monday. Deep, hard truths posited by small-handed business man/presidential candidate Donald Trump. In these trying times, Trump is a breath of hot fresh air. He’s the only candidate strong enough to foppishly describe all the ways that America is the worst country in the history of ever.

Over the course of the last few months, Donald Trump has bravely yelled about the various threats facing America. First, it was Muslims. Who knows what’s going on under those head thingies, right? They should wear something more acceptable, like cowboy hats.

Next, it appeared that Mexican people were the biggest threat.

As someone who is 50 percent Mexican, I felt 50 percent bad about it. Sorry for kind of wanting to kill you, America. Then there were a lot of other evil things: Obama, handicapped people, Obama, brown people in general, Obama, Skittles, and Obama.

But all these threats are dwarfed by the newest, biggest problem revealed by Trump: a 400 pound fat man, sitting somewhere, hacking our computers.

How could we not have noticed him? Curse you, political correctness. If we were allowed to scream at fat people, as nature intended, we never would’ve gotten into this mess.

I for one, believe that we should applaud Donald Trump. It’s about damn time someone took a

brave stance against overweight Americans, i.e. fat fascists, i.e. fatscists. What are they up to?

What are they storing all that energy for? Evil? What are they hiding under their superfluous flesh? ISIS? Probably!

Look: cholesterol = evil. It’s a straight up one to one ratio. Don’t believe me? History is a laundry list of evil fat people. Like John Candy, for instance, or that guy who keeps taking up all the driers in my apartment. Case closed.

Trump was right, again.

Trump’s stand against fat people is nothing short of heroic. It is without a doubt the bravest, most incredible thing I have ever seen, believe me, it is unbelievable. As a certifiably obese person himself, he’s sacrificing so much by calling out fat people, putting himself at the risk of being mugged at a Krispy Kreme.

He’s the one fat person you can trust. Trump has spearheaded the fight himself, heroically insulting women who have gained even the slightest amount of weight. It’s about time. We need someone who isn’t afraid to harass women. Take that, establishment!

If we want America to be great again, we’re going to have to make serious lifestyle changes. We need more gentle inclines and narrower plane seats. Also, more celery sticks. If you see a fat person, chase them. Poke them with sharpened sticks. Protest sumo wrestling. The next time you’re eating at Arby’s, keep a close eye on the big fella going face down into a Ruben. The next thing he takes a bite out of could be …

The same article from Community College Review, this time citing the San Francisco Gate, says that 59 percent of students who earn at least 20 units in their first year go on to earn a degree.

Comparitively, only 21 percent of students that don’t graduate at all.

This proves that getting students feet firmly on the ground early helps immensely with getting students to achieve their academic goals, and one mandatory counseling appointment could do just that.

A mandatory counseling appointment every semester could help everyone. A more educated society is a better society, and community colleges are an instrumental part of the higher education world, and a mandatory counseling appointment helps make that happen.

Mandatory counseling, at least once, would make it easier for all students at Skyline College to realize their academic goals, and would contribute to a bettereducated Skyline with more successful students.

The Night King of Westeros Announces Endorsement of Donald Trump

The Night King of Westeros Announces Endorsement of Donald Trump.

Endorsements for Donald Trump have been rolling in ever since he announced his candidacy for president in June 2015. Names, faces and organizations from nearly every corner of the world have expressed their endorsement for Mr. Trump including former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senator Ted Cruz, the National Rifle Association and American mythology incarnate-Chuck Norris.

Yet his latest endorsement may, no pun intended, trump them all.

The Night King, of the island of Westeros, is the leader of an ancient race of humanoid ice creatures known as the White Walkers and has amassed an army of his fellow “walkers” and reanimated human corpses known as “Wights.”

He’s hoping that his strong coalition of zombies and soulless ice creatures will help him as he puts it, “Make Westeros Terrible Again.”

The Night King held a press conference on the grounds of a slaughtered village of wildlings where he was in the process of reanimating corpses and razing the settlement, to explain why he had announced his support for the Republican nominee. Speaking from his ice podium he coldly

explained “I don’t usually get myself involved in politics, too much talk, not enough killing for my taste, but after watching and speaking with Mr. Trump I am hereby announcing my support for his candidacy for president.”

The Night King elaborated on his position by focusing on their similar personalities as ambitious strong men, explaining “You know one of the main reasons I was drawn to Mr. Trump was because of the parallels between us. We’re both narcissistic, chauvinistic, morally bankrupt individuals with an unhealthy thirst for absolute power.

That’s not to say these qualities are hard to find in politicians but Mr. Trump had that extra little bit of depravity that really convinced me that he was “my guy.”

Donald Trump was very thankful for the support and concurred with much of what the Night King said. “I have always been a big fan of the Night King. He’s done a tremendous, tremendous job in Westeros. Truly beautiful, beautiful tremendous

things for those people. These white walkers call me all the time and they say “Donald you’d love this guy” and I do, I truly do. I mean the guy has done so many tremendous things for them.”

Trump even went on to explain it might energize his base even further as he said “I mean both of our supporters are either souless or zombies who just agree with whatever we say or do.

The Night King, my dear friend, a tremendous man, even offered a small loan of a million zombies for the election. What a guy huh?! I’ve got tremendous respect for him, I really do, I really do but I had to refuse the offer. Trust me I got enough zombies supporting me” Trump said with a laugh.

When asked how they would resolve their policy differences when it came to walls, Mr. Trump of course wants to build one along the Mexican border while The Night King wants to destroy the one preventing him from reigning terror across Westeros, Mr. Trump offered a simple solution.

“Compromise.”

Letters to the Editor In response to Editorial and Artistic License in Volume XL- Issue 2

To the Editor & Skyline View Staff I was shocked after reading your above subject article published on September 15, 2016 and the associated photo and cartoon caricature that accompanied the article! Your reference that our offering classes geared towards women because our gender is stupid, then your photo and cartoon in itself just insulted all women.

I do not recall anyone from your office coming into our department asking questions on these women gender based courses as you referred in your article; after all, we are in the same building, not far to go to get some true facts related to these courses.

Every article that was published in this paper, Volume XL-Issue 2, had a writer associated with the articles written, except for this very piece, why?

I was a regular reader of Skyline View, but no more because this very article, there have been occasional articles in the past, only showcases how bias and opinionated the Skyline View staff are.

Nancy Lam Skyline College, BEPP Division, Automotive Technology Dear Skyline View Staff, I am writing in response to the editorial entitled “Skyline Offers Course Just for Women*”, as well as the photo accompanying the piece and the “Artistic License” cartoon on the same subject. I am surprised at what amounts to an anonymous attack on a class that you’ve singled out of the entire catalog.

I saw that this editorial was published without credit to the author and understand that it was written by “group consensus” among the paper’s staff writers. I am curious how you arrived at this consensus without doing even the smallest amount of research? You did not speak to me, nor anyone in the administration and apparently did not speak to any students who have taken the class. You also do not seem to be acquainted with the “Learning Community” concept, which is strongly supported here on campus. And finally, you apparently are not familiar with approximately over 30 years of gender in education research.

With just a little effort, you could have easily discovered the answer to the question you posed – why is this a class for women?

Rather than accusing me and the college of thinking “female students… are so stupid”, you would have discovered that quite a bit of thought went into creating this class, which has resulted in an exponential growth in female enrollment and success rates in automotive programs.

You would have discovered that this class was a result of my own experience in automotive education and in the automotive industry, as well as grant funded research into recruiting and retaining women in non-traditional industries.

You might have discovered that the automotive industry is STILL 98 percent male, a statistic that has not changed much since the 1950’s.

You might have learned that this is not a new class, but that I have been teaching it for almost a decade and that it was among the first in the nation. You also might have discovered that this class has helped earn Skyline College a national reputation for its efforts in recruiting and retaining women in non-traditional industries.

If you had asked, I might have showed you eight years’ worth of positive student evaluations.

You might have known these things had you not made assumptions based on little if any, evidence. You made factually incorrect statements. You accused the administration of thinking its students are “stupid”. You undermined the reputation of your own publication. And you made yourselves appear foolish.

There’s a reason it’s not “Car Care Basics for Beginners” – a very good reason, and if you’d made even the smallest effort, you would know what that reason is.

Today I’m here to talk to you about a writer’s greatest fear: permanent writer’s block. Here’s a little exposition about why someone might suffer from this.

After being obliged to write for some time, interesting topics can be harder to brainstorm. Writers everywhere will understand, and so will students.

I have to write another book? Another essay? Another article?

Whatever will I write about this time? It’s easy in the beginning with an endless amount of choices.

There’s still going to be choices later on down the road, but a writer’s creative juices could be less juicy.

That’s only with the assumption that the writer picked his or her favorite ideas in the beginning, leaving the less interesting or liked topics for the end. Who wants to write about something that they don’t like?

And that, reader, is where permanent writer’s block comes into play.

Articles read better when the writer is passionate about the subject.

At least, my articles do.

After writing The View From Here for an entire semester, it felt like I came back to permanent writer’s block when trying to write the first few of this semester.

It’s not that the articles were bad; they both just kind of existed.

Words on paper. Symbols in ink. That’s how much passion was implemented into those two articles.

But permanent writer’s block can’t really be permanent, right?

Of course not. No matter how stubborn a writer is, it’s always possible to come up with a topic to write about.

Skyline goes to “Middletown”

The first and only play of the semester is being put together in building 1, with a few students and one devoted instructor working tirelessly to make magic happen onstage.

The play is “Middletown,” a small town of average people leading average lives. And each one is falling apart.

“I want the audience to understand that life is too great to let it control you,” said Clayborne Go, the second-year Skyline College student set to star in “Middletown.”

The play revolves around the residents of a small town as they grapple with and all fall victim to their own individual existential crises. Go’s character, John Dodge, joins this struggle as he constantly searches for what awaits us after death.

“He is always moving on from one project to another,” Go said, “He just wants to find things [to do], and he is always trying to find new things to make his life more interesting.”

Luckily for Go, he can relate to the character on a personal level, making it that much easier to get into the role.

“He is an ambitious person,” Go said, “Sometimes I’ll end up taking on two projects at a time.”

This project in particular is one in a new wave theatrical

productions that Skyline College has put on after decades of hiatus.

Kevin Simmers, who began teaching drama at Skyline three years ago, and has directed every subsequent production, is directing “Middletown”. It will mark his fourth show since the program returned, which is an achievement in and of itself.

“I taught the first drama class at Skyline in 35 years,” Simmers said, “I had been trying for 20 years to finally get theater back on campus, and we finally got it.”

Despite his enthusiasm for the revival of theater at Skyline, “Middletown” was not Simmers’ first choice of production for the Fall 2016 semester. He originally pitched Thorton Wilder’s “Our Town,” which Simmers credits as one of the great American plays, and it is a play from which “Middletown” draws heavily.

“Some of the critiques of ‘Middletown’ when it came out, was that it was kind of a contemporary ‘Our Town’” Simmers said, “And when I pitched it to the students, they didn’t really want to do ‘Our Town.’ So this is our little compromise.”

Going forward, Simmers wants to focus on not letting some of the dark themes overshadow lightheartedness and humor that can be found in the play as well.

“There’s a tendency for [the play] to go dark and I don’t want it to go dark,” Simmers said. “I want the words and ideas to trigger

thinking, rather than placing that on the actors. I don’t want them to [intentionally] play dark, I just want them to be truthful to the characters.”

After only rehearsing for a few weeks, Simmers and the rest of his cast and crew already have their eyes set on creating an intimate and immersive experience for the audience, and have already begun experimenting with different set designs, with the ultimate goal of attracting a larger crowd to the Skyline Theater.

“The actors deserve to have 150200 people in the theater for each performance,” Simmers said, “We don’t get that, but that is what I am hoping for someday.”

“Middletown” debuts on Nov. 17 and will run until Nov. 20.

Young philanthropist in the making

Community service is something more than just a hobby for many people, but one 18-year-old student from Skyline College found a passion in it.

Through community service, Patricia Manubay developed an organization devoted to creating positive change.

It all started at El Camino High School, when Patricia was a sophomore. She started doing community service in order to fulfill high school requirements and to look good on college applications. However, community service quickly became more than just a requirement.

That year, Manubay was also struggling with her mental health and finding self acceptance. She began looking for some outlet to help her.

“I was reaching out for things that would make me feel better about myself and in desperation, community service was kind of that thing,” Manubay said.

Eventually, Manubay became involved with Students in Action, an organization lead by the Jefferson Awards to train students into making impactful change through community service.

Through a service competition called Lead 360 also by the Jefferson Awards, Manubay competed under the Education Literacy category and won. From there she was able to create an organization called Dream Boxes.

student,” Manubay said. “The purpose of Dream Boxes is to ensure that students have the right school supplies to be successful in school and the encouragement and support to pursue their dream”.

With Dream Boxes being solely the responsibility of Manubay, she sought more help through schools and volunteers, collecting donations in order to support the organization. Each box cost up to $15 to make.

Manubay has been able to donate Dream Boxes to several schools in the United States and the Philippines. This service gained some media attention as well, from news programs like Balitang

America and KPIX CBS Channel 5.

After having a successful start with Dream Boxes, difficulties began. Manubay missed being able to collaborate with others and felt pressure build up working on Dream Boxes primarily by herself.

This lead to Manubay cofounding Above Apathy with Tiana Valerio.

“Above Apathy is a youth lead organization created in the summer of 2016 that caters to passionately driven service projects,” Manubay said. “Above Apathy’s purpose is to challenge apathy through service and leadership to enact positive change.”

Currently the umbrella organization houses the projects Dream Boxes and YOUth Votes, a project dedicated to promoting youth involvement in politics, founded by Fredy Rivera.

As for Patricia Manubay, next semester she will be transferring early to either San Francisco State University or University of San Francisco.

She has also recently become Volunteer Director at NAMI: The National Alliance of Mental Illness.

Dream Boxes will be ending around December in order for Manubay to focus on other projects.

Above Apathy plans to focus on more projects in the spring relating to art, self care and mental health.

Skyline College is proud to host the 2016 White House Initiative’s Summit on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

A component of the mission of the Initiative is to restore the United States to its role as the global leader in education; strengthen the Nation by improving educational outcomes for African Americans of all ages; and help ensure that African Americans receive a complete and competitive education that prepares them for college, and productive citizenship.

The Brewcade is close to the feel of old school arcades, but with a great list of fresh local beers and a mix of classic and modern games.

It’s a place where one can let loose and for a moment lose themselves in a game with some friends.

“I kind of like to tell the crew we’re the ambassador of fun,” Vergara said. “It’s really cheesy, I know, but people just want to come chill, relax, blow off some steam, and just want to have some fun.”

Just make sure you have some small bills like ones and fives to get quarters, unless you want to ball out and spend $20 or more on the arcade.

At the end of the night, all that matters is that you enjoy yourself.

To many young gamers, arcades seem like ancient relics that propelled the world of gaming to where it is today. A place where their fathers spent countless coins, getting the highest score in “PacMan” or “Galaga,” back when they were adolescents, escaping the world through video games.

Although it seems like arcades have gone extinct and is just another part of gaming history, there are still a few places out there that keep the arcade spirit alive. The Brewcade, located on 2200 Market St., is one of those places.

Shawn Vergara, the 48-year-old owner of Brewcade, brought the concept of brewery and arcade back from Colorado two years ago.

“I had visited a bar with my nephew in the Midwest in Colorado,” Vergara said. “As soon as I heard about it, I said we have to bring this back to San Francisco.”

The moment you walk in, you will be greeted by the old school sounds of button mashing, pinballs clashing, and joysticks thrashing while arcade systems and pinball machines flash and sparkle.

Beyond electric entertainment, the establishment also has a wide selection of drinks for people to enjoy. They have wine, specialty sodas, a wine slushie known as “Grape Drank,” and lastly their

vast selection of beers on tap that are constantly changing.

“The draft list changes so much there is always something new,” Vergara said. “We work mainly with self-distributed beers, local, throughout the bay area, and do a little national with some imports.”

The best part about their draft list is that it showcases great local breweries people might not know about. And the upside of partnering with local breweries is the fresh

brews costumers get to taste.

“It’s fresh beer; the beer is made one day, it’s on our tap the next day,” Vergara said. “We’re constantly keeping our list fresh, a trend you’ll see in the industry.”

The draft list isn’t the only impressive offer either. The establishment’s list of games is fairly extensive as well, including many classic games like “Galaga,” “Space Invaders,” “Pac-Man,” “Street Fighter” and “Asteroid.”

To avoid being completely retro, the Brewcade also has newer games like “Mario Kart” and “Super Smash Bros.” on a Wii U console. But their most popular game, which has gained a following in the bar, is a newer arcade game called “Killer Queen.” It is the first ten man arcade game.

“Slow-den”

As a biographical thriller, “Snowden” had great story telling that depicted how Edward Snowden, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, released the information about the NSA wiretapping and spying. That’s about it though.

The great cinematography, where the shots were visually pleasing and the scenes were in high quality, were few and far between. Many scenes felt like they dragged the story, though the scenes of intense build were just that: intense.

The film utilizes footage of (the real) Snowden being interviewed as well, which is what gave the story most of it’s context. It broke down a very complicated story into a simple “right vs wrong” that highlighted the key moments that transpired in Snowden’s life in the past ten years, condensed into a two hour movie. Obviously the events portrayed are complex issues that require more than two hours of screen time to explain, but the film could have handled it a bit better.

Unfortunately those two hours tended to feel like an eternity, due to the dragging shots.

The movie portrayed Snowden as a very patriotic person before he joined the CIA and NSA, a man that just wanted to serve his country, and do all he could do with his intelligence. It showed the struggle he went through deciding what he should do to with the information he had on our government.

The movie came out at an interesting point in time, with Snowden still living in Moscow. But the public opinion of him has changed, as people think of what was called espionage and see it now as a whistle blower who shined a

light into a dark place.

The biggest problem with the movie, though, aside from the cinematic hiccups that usually plague biopics, is the over dramatization of what he did. The film makes him a hero, but he did steal information from the government. Spying aside, there were also national security secrets and information on our nations defense lumped into the information he had. While it is clear vilifying Snowden is wrong, defying him could be worse. Two bad sides of the same coin.

“Snowden” was an interesting movie and is worth seeing for what it is, a black and white rendition of a rainbow, but it wouldn’t hurt to wait for the DVD first.

Local NFL teams heading different directions

stop the Titans in the red zone for their second win The Oakland Raiders defeated the Tennessee Titans 17-10 in a close game on the road that was decided by the final play.

Titans Quarterback Marcus Mariota attempted to throw for the end zone to tie the game up, but his effort came up short.

This was a much needed win for Oakland after their crushing loss the week before to the Atlanta Falcons. Oakland’s defense has been called into question leading up to this game and rightfully so, after giving up an historic 961 total yards and 69 points through the first two games.

They redeemed themselves a bit in their win as they only allowed 10 points and forced 3 turnovers.

It was an impressive outing considering how terrible they have played previously.

One of the reasons why they performed better was the debuts of rookie safety Karl Joseph and linebacker Corey James.

No one on the defense had more

tackles than these two, with Joseph having a team high 10 tackles and James with 7 tackles.

He is a much better player than Keith McGill, the player whose spot he stole, as McGill would constantly miss tackles and give up deep pass plays.

Deep pass plays were not even a feature of the Titans offense, which just goes to show the improvement. It is just a matter if they can remain consistent throughout the season The offense of the Raiders looked dangerous. Quarterback Derek Carr really has the offense going, but he was being let down by his receivers this game.

Constant drops were the main issues stalling their drives.

Drops were an issue of this offense last season as well. Other than that and some penalties this offense is poised to be top 5 this season. Eyes will still be on the defense next week as they take on the Baltimore Ravens.

The San Francisco Forty-Niners were not as fortunate as the Raiders as they were pummeled by the Seattle Seahawks 37-18.

Two garbage time touchdowns made the score more respectable, but they were down 24-3 at halftime.

At that point, the Forty-Niners should’ve put in Colin Kaepernick at quarterback. That position is holding back the team from lack of productivity.

The Seahawks offense looked explosive from the moment the first offensive drive started.

The drive was capped by a Christine Michael 41 yard touchdown run only a minute into the game. It was all downhill from there for San Francisco.

The Forty-Niners haven’t had much success against the Seahawks the last few years, especially in Seattle. They definitely weren’t going to with Blaine Gabbert at the helm.

It is only a matter of time

before head coach Chip Kelly benches Gabbert in favor of Colin Kaepernick. Colin can’t be worse than Gabbert and they might as well see if Colin can kick start the offense given his history.

When you have Gabbert as your starting quarterback, defenses will just continue to load up the box reducing running lanes for Hyde.

The lack of wide receiver talent also handicaps this team, so it’s not all on Gabbert.

The only bright spots on this Forty-Niner team are All-pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman and running back Carlos Hyde. These two consistently produce numbers, but they can’t carry the load alone.

The hope is that first round pick DeForest Buckner can grow into a dominant pass rusher. He hasn’t made any explosive plays yet, but hopefully he can put his stamp on this team soon to ease the load off of Hyde and Bowman.

Can both of these players get help and bounce back next week when they take on the Dallas Cowboys?

Hidden uses and nutrional benefits of milk

Milk is one of the healthiest and most nutritious beverages today.

However, it is often ignored in favor of the occasional sport drinks or soda. Even though the argument that “milk is the superior drink” has been made before, students still need to be reminded of what milk can do.

A popular misconception is that fat-free or skim milk is healthier than whole milk. This can be true when it comes to weight loss, because one will have fewer fats to work off. However, the dietary fats that are in whole milk can help certain individuals with specific regimens and health conditions.

For example, if a person plans to bulk up from their work out, the extra fats in whole milk will help.

The fatty acids essential to our bodies, like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, are slashed out of whole milk by a significant amount. Comparing the nutrition facts data found in nutritiondata. self.com, 183 mg of omega-3’s are in a cup of whole milk contain, as opposed to fat-free milk’s measly 4.9 mg.

The same story goes for omega6’s in whole milk, with whole milk containing 293 mg of the fatty acid compared to fat-free milk’s 12.4 mg. Omega-3 and omega-6 goes hand-in-hand in promoting brain function, and normal growth and development.

Fat-free milk has slightly more vitamin A and calcium, while having less Vitamin D than whole milk.

Right now, we are only discussing milk of the “cow” variety but let’s focus on another bovine; the buffalo. Buffalo milk, compared to cow’s milk, has more calcium as well as a better balanced amount of omega-3’s and omega-6’s; at the cost of more calories.

However, there is something in buffalo’s milk that may catch people’s attention; its ability to prevent cancer.

According to the study by Robert G. Jensen called “The Composition of Bovine Milk Lipids: January 1995 to December 2000” buffalo milk has the largest amount of Butyric acid compared to fellow bovine and other animals; that includes humans as well. Based on a study called “Bovine milk in human nutrition - a review,”, Butyric acid is a well-known modulator of gene function, and may also play a role in cancer prevention.

Buffalo milk also contains a small amount of caprylic acids that has been reported to delay tumor growth. The problem about buffalo milk is that it is mundane to the North American market and is typically ignored. There is also

The Skyline volleyball team hosted the Golden Gate Classic and played against the Siskiyous Eagles as well the Shasta Knights on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016. The lady Trojans lost both matchups, losing to Siskiyous after five sets and Shasta after only three.

Despite the results, Skyline’s losses may not be as it seem.

Skyline’s opening match up was against the Eagles and it went off to a good start. During the first set, Skyline’s defense and offense did its job to go back-and-forth against Siskiyous, but it wasn’t enough to bring them over the top during the first set.

The next set was more favorable to Skyline but both teams began to bring more effort.

In the second set, the Trojan’s defense paved the way for their offense. Skyline’s Opposite, Zina Kelati and Middle Blocker Jaichelle White’s hustle were essential during this set as the team went on the offensive.

Leading Skyline’s offense was Outside Hitter Justice Afatasi, who delivered her share of kills; with all of this factors combined, Skyline came back 26-24 to win the set.

“We are swinging a lot better and we always find the open spots on the court. I feel like our hitters did a great job finding the kill shots,” Skyline’s Libero Marlene Alcantara said.

The third set is when things got pretty ugly for the Trojans, losing the set 25-14. Siskiyous displayed attacks that were more rigorous than the Trojans can handle which cost them the set. Several calls from the officials also affected Siskiyous’ win this round.

With the Eagles leading, Skyline exploded in the fourth.

Afatasi, along with Outside Hitter Claire Hardiman lead the team offensively with the rest doing their part. White’s defense and Setter Marisa Kealoha’s allaround work won them the set, 27-25. The Skyline’s well-rounded teamwork held on through to the fifth set but Siskiyous barely won the last set 15-13.

“They continue to push the entire time. They didn’t give up.

There have been times where something didn’t really go their way before the ball’s dead; now, they are still going to try. The hustle and the scrapping are starting to pay off for them. They could’ve lost their sets but instead they pushed it to fifth,” Skyline’s Head Coach Rayannah Salahuddin said during the break before the

The exhausted Skyline team now has to face the state-ranked Shasta. “[Playing two games in a row] improves my mental toughness.

So when we play the next match, I can help my team up and just go start the next set,” White said on the effects of playing two consecutive games.

After five grueling sets against Siskiyous, Skyline’s diminished state was apparent against the fully-rested Knights that a few moments ago, swept Mission College. Fatigue causes the Trojans to be plagued by ballhandling errors; combined with the Knight’s great succession of aces, there was no contest.

However, Afatasi remained a dominant figure on the court with several kills in the way of spikes during the duration of the Shasta match up. Another noteworthy player against Shasta was Hardiman, who scored points alongside Afatasi.

Despite of the losses, Skyline’s team displayed talent and drive but came up short because of some mental lapses.

“Our mental game needs to be better. This game, our mental game and energy was a lot lower.

If we have a high energy and strong mental game we would’ve done a lot better,” Hardiman said after the game against Shasta.
