Society can allow people to feel isolated and alone in their struggles.

Here is a collection of narratives, calls to action and advice for those in similar circumstances.

Cultural dissonance There is a phrase in Arabic, aweeyeh, which means a strong, empowered woman. It is not spoken positively, but rather in jest and is meant as a warning, "be quiet, you are too outspoken". The woman mentioned in this article is part of a Muslim community and asked to remain anonymous due to the fear that her family and community would punish her if they discovered her views.

So, for the purposes of this article, we shall call her "A". According to "A", her particular community can be quite strict.

In the Quran, the Islamic religious book, the rules are not +divided between genders. However, "A" states that her culture specifies certain rules for certain genders, with females receiving stricter treatment.

“I’ll be like, 'Mom this doesn’t make sense, if you were following the religion you would be telling my brothers the same thing but you aren’t doing that',” said "A".

"A" is expected to follow rules that have never been enforced when it comes to her brothers.

"A" is not allowed to date, as she is expected to have an arranged marriage. But if she were to find a man on her own, he must be Muslim and fit all of her family’s strict

standards. Her brother, on the other hand, is not only allowed to date but lives with his girlfriend.

As a woman in the community, her dress code is very limited. She once posted a photo on Instagram of her wearing shorts that are typically socially acceptable.

However, in her culture, these shorts would be considered scandalous and she was warned by a cousin that her aunt had seen the photo, and could potentially inform the community.

Other rules she must obey are no drinking, no partying and no staying out late, as it is considered a sin. Her brothers are allowed to do all of the above, yet will condemn her for the same actions they commit.

"A's" family is quite well known within her community, so there is always an underlying fear someone will notice she is not complying with their rules.

Once away at college, "A" felt this pressure lessen and has begun the path of finding who she is away from her community's strict rules. Growing up, "A" agreed to all she was told to do. But once she had moved out, she realized she hadn’t really known who she was when she was living at home.

“When I moved out I was just like 'oh my god, everything is so different',” "A" said. “I’m not used to this, I don’t know how to act, I don’t know what to do in certain situations. And I think that’s really harmful for someone. You should have that experience.”

According to "A", to be a woman in the Islamic culture, you have to be really strong and not care what others think of you or you will be stepped on. She mentions that she knows a few girls who feel a similar way about the culture, though not many are outspoken about it.

"A's" advice for girls in a similar situation was "education, education, education".

“For me personally, I always knew education was my way out," "A" said.

“It’s honestly the best decision I’ve ever made. Knowledge really is power.”

Vietnam to U.S. Hung Huynh, business major at UC Berkeley, was born in Vietnam. But at the age of four, he was diagnosed with ASD or atrial septal defect. This is a disease in which there is a hole in the upper chamber of the heart. Without surgery, this condition could result in death by the age of 12 or 13. In Vietnam, there was no technology that could treat the hole, so the entire family was forced to move to the United States for the life-saving surgery.

At the time of the Vietnam War, Huynh’s grandfather fought on the side of the U.S. However, when the war was over his grandfather was incarcerated for five to seven years, and when he

was released, the government granted him and his family refugee status in the U.S. Once in the U.S., their refugee status only lasted a few years after the successful surgery and their green cards expired. The cost of citizenship renewal came to $12,000 in total and was a large financial burden on the family. As a result, Huynh and his family, with the exception of his nine-year-old sister, were undocumented for 16 years.

For Huynh, the most difficult aspect of being undocumented was navigating the governmental system. From a driver’s license to flying, to finding a job; there were numerous obstacles.

At first, his family lived in a very white-dominant neighborhood, but after some time, they moved to a Southeast Asian community out of fear being deported.

“My parents said we need to move to somewhere more southeast Asian because we’re scared, we’re undocumented and we don’t know what’s going to happen,” Huynh said.

Being undocumented, it was a struggle and burden for Huynh and his family financially. It was difficult to find jobs, resources, and opportunities. But the hardest part for Huynh, was just not knowing what the next day was going to look like. Trump's election and the subsequent political climate instilled more fear in Huynh as a foreign student.

This was also all on top of the fact that he was away from his parents who did not speak any English and a sister who would be left behind if they were deported.

“The biggest thing is be faithful and hopeful in what you do.

Stay rooted in whatever your purpose is and why you are here in the first place,” Huynh said as advice to others who are undocumented. “To be honest, as scary as it sounds, just live on a day by day basis and surround yourself with community because during these times, you don’t have anything else but community. ... What we have is each other and that’s what you need to be rooted in if you want to tackle this issue.”

Huynh also states that once you work hard and do everything in your capacity, things will work out for you. He also emphasizes staying close to family and loved ones.

As for what needs to change, Huynh states, “I definitely think we need some reformation when it comes to policy changes and we need our administration to understand that we are built on the backbones of immigrants since it’s been founded.”

For Huynh, his biggest hope is that one day the administration acknowledges the fact that this country was built by immigrants and that this was native land that was not ours to begin with.

He hopes that this comes to mind when the topic of accepting immigrants arises.

“That’s what makes America, America,” Huynh said.

Transitioning Giselle "Gee" Hernandez is a 20-year-old business major at College of San Mateo following his dream to become the man he was always meant to be. Growing up, Hernandez did not quite know how to identify himself, though he knew he did not think or act like the girls from a young age, and so kept quiet.

High school came along, and he met a girl who had feelings for him, and who he had feelings for in return. At this point, Hernandez assumed he was gay and so came out to his family as such. But as time passed, Hernandez felt this label did not fit him. He had cut his hair short and began wearing more masculine clothing within his senior year.

“I was really happy,” Hernandez said. “I have short hair, I started dressing more I guess you can say masculine, and it just made me really comfortable. It made me happy.”

After graduating high school, Hernandez mentioned to his girlfriend that he did not think he was gay, but actually transgender and had not felt he was in the body he was meant to be in. He often would try to wear hoodies rather than shirts and hide his breasts, as he was uncomfortable with the femininity.

Coming out to his friends, they were very accepting. But his family was a bit more difficult, as they were strong Catholics. Though it was not apart of their beliefs, they still accepted him. Gee recalls his mom telling him that at the end of the day, he was still her kid and that she just wanted him to be happy.

There were some people along the way he had lost after his coming out, many of which said awful things. But he knew there would be people who would not agree with his transition.

On March 16, 2017, Hernandez began his first day of testosterone.

He now continues his testosterone which he administers through a needle, though there are also other methods. He states that after six months, one is eligible for top surgery and after a year, one can have bottom surgery. Due to it being a year, Gee will be having his top surgery early May this year.

Since coming out, Hernandez describes feeling incredibly happy.

“Emotionally it’s just one big smiley face,” Hernandez said. “I’m so happy. It’s hard to put it in words, but all I can say is I feel so blessed and fortunate to be able to express who I am, be who I am, be who I always thought I was, who I always knew I as and not to hold back any fear.”

As advice for those considering to transition or are currently transitioning, Hernandez says be you and don’t hold back. While people in society may have their opinions, he says you only have one life and to live it for yourself.

Through this collection, participants were given a voice as well as the opportunity to help others in similar situations. They shared similar themes of staying true to who you are and perseverance against all odds.

The power of the beauty community to effect change

In 2016, Forbes valued the beauty industry at $445 billion dollars and saw 4 percent growth in one year. Statista reported that the U.S. was the “most valuable beauty and personal care market in the world.”

The makeup industry is a fast-growing behemoth but that doesn’t mean that companies can’t take a hit. Much like David and Goliath, members of the beauty community are proving their purchasing power. In an industry all about inclusion, trust and credibility, if a makeup company’s values don’t reflect that of their customers, the customers are more than willing to buy their products somewhere else.

But the effect is magnified if the powerful beauty gurus of YouTube resolve to stop buying or mentioning the brand’s products.

was a huge hit and made it into many beauty YouTubers’ yearly favorites videos. So, the news of a foundation launching as part of the same line caused a lot of excitement. But when the shades were released, there was obvious disappointment. At their first launch, Tarte released 15 foundation shades. Of those, only three could be categorized as medium or dark.

People were outraged. And beauty YouTubers, acting as gatekeepers of the beauty community, also showed their dismay at the shade range. This is especially impactful since a survey

by Variety found that YouTubers were the most influential figures to U.S. teens.

YouTubers such as Jackie Aina and Alissa Ashley, who are women of color, made videos denouncing the brand’s limited shades. Many light-skinned consumers pledged to stop buying from Tarte because the line blatantly excluded people of color. Tarte issued an apology, saying that the coming launch of additional shades would be more inclusive. But it was too little, too late for many customers who expected more out of such a big name makeup company.

Unfortunately, for many, this issue isn’t at all unusual. Josie Maran and It Cosmetics also offer a dismal shade range for darker complected people.

People with darker skin tones find it nearly impossible to find their foundation shade since many makeup companies cater to light-skinned women.

“There are limited options for people of color so many are forced to use something that doesn’t fit their complexion which makes them not as confident,” Bernard said.

The result?

There is an alternative, albeit not a good one. Riddle and Bernard both said that some people of color have to buy two foundations and mix them in order to get the right shade. However, this practice is costly, tedious and inconvenient.

Change is slow in the makeup industry. Especially when it comes to brands’ inclusion of all people.

Ramirez lamented the lack of neutral and cool undertones for darkskinned people. But with the power and influence that beauty gurus have, they could change the game.

If makeup companies started to include women of color beauty gurus in discussions about their products and not just as a face for their advertising, they could start selling products that would match the consumers they have historically ignored.

Baquirin echoed many in the beauty community’s sentiment when she said, “Everyone should have access to good foundation.”

What we choose to wear In the fashion world, we are seeing less of who wears what and seeing more freedom of choice. Growing up, I was given the opportunity to mix menswear into my personal style. As it turns out, the experimentation with looser fitting clothes allowed me to implement male staples into my appearance.

However, as millennials know, we are now able to break any gender stereotype. It isn’t about just menswear or womenswear anymore — it’s more of what you choose to wear. If any year brings out freedom of fashion choice, it is 2018.

Women’s rights activist Amelia Bloomer advocated for women to throw away their petticoats and corsets in exchange for loose pants, coined “bloomers” in the 1850s.

During the Roaring ‘20s, there was a massive shift in women’s clothing with women entering the workforce during the first world war and gaining the right to vote. Frida Kahlo, at the age of 17, was photographed in 1924 sporting a three-piece menswear suit. One of the most influential fashion icons of the ‘20s was Coco Chanel who rebelliously embraced androgyny and paved the way for menswear-inspired

women’s apparel.

As time went on, blazers, which were primarily modeled by men for men, were now being worn by women.

Men wearing womenswear is often a taboo subject but it is finally catching up to women in menswear.

Millennials are breaking molds and redefining terms such as “masculine” and “feminine” because fashion has no gender.

Audiences are now seeing the combination of stereotypical female and male fashion statements: men wearing nail polish and high heels and women wearing utility apparel. Creative directors have always turned to

iconic editorials for breaking the mold.

I discovered the work of fashion stylist and model Farren Jean Andrea, also known as FUCCI on Twitter or karlie.floss on Instagram, this year. In recent years, he has styled Rihanna, Kehlani, Bella Hadid, and Jhene Aiko.

“I used to always feel the need to say a man’s name when asked who influenced my personal style,” Fucci said. “But honestly, women do.”

Fitting into a gender norm is an outdated practice and we’re putting an end to stereotypes.

As weird as it sounds, it was a fun experience to be goofy in a furniture store.

Some of my favorite photographers include Petra Collins and Cole Bennett. They each have unique mindsets and visions that allow them to create amazing work through photography and videography. When it comes to photography, I never limit myself to what I can do. But that advice should be taken for every craft — never limit yourself.

Students walk out for change

W

alkouts are a constant reminder that a unified student voice is a driver of change. During the last 50 years in each decade, students have started movements by expressing their collective opinion and advocating for a change. Community colleges play a large role in the student population and therefore have a significant opportunity to make an impact.

According to the American Association of Community Colleges, there are over 13 million community college students enrolled in campuses across the United States. This large amount of people exemplifies the potential for influence through the power in numbers and increases the social responsibility for community college students.

Walkouts throughout history have led to many advancements by tackling controversial issues such as segregation in the civil rights era and the Vietnam War draft. More recently, the walkouts have been in support of immigrants and opposing the termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The urgency of finding a solution to these problems is emphasized by 14 SUMMER 2018

students and their ability to assemble. Their organization sends a loud message of resolution to the nation.

Students promoting change can have reverberating effects seen far beyond campus walls.

In October 1963, 250,000 students walked out of Chicago schools demanding equitable educational resources for black children; in 1964, 450,000 black and Puerto Rican students in New York protested segregation in public schools a decade after the Supreme Court ruled it unlawful; in 1968, 15,000 Chicano students in East Los Angeles walked out against unequal conditions in their school district.

These student movements are examples of when an underrepresented population takes matters into their own hands and demands a change through action. The East LA student walkouts inspired the Chicano community to fight for their civil rights and use their strength in numbers to achieve the equality and representation they desired.

In the United States, today, there are still immense amounts of inequality in the education system, but that does not mean that students’ actions were unsuccessful. These past walkouts set the stage for a number of student-led movements and even

though some of these walkouts were 50 years ago, the culture of students standing up for justice and what is right lives on today.

Gun control is the issue students are currently tackling, and guns have failed to be the center of focus on preventing these mass shootings. Students are realigning that focus and pressuring companies and legislators alike to make a necessary change.

Student action after the Parkland, Florida mass shooting caused an immediate response by large gun retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods who stopped selling assault rifles and Walmart who raised the age to purchase an assault rifle from 18 to 21.

According to The New YorkTimes, school campuses have turned into active shooter crime scenes 239 times since 2012 claiming 138 lives.

The direct effects gun violence has on the student population is responsible for students’ act of civil disobedience. Many campuses have the support of students and faculty alike. Here at Skyline, it is no different.

“I participated in this walk out because I feel like it’s such an important message to share with the nation that our youth matters that our youth’s safety matters,” said Nathaniel Navado counselor

at Skyline College.

It is essential to the progress of student-led movements to have not only students from multiple ages to participate, but also for professors and administrators to get involved. Skyline’s community is a great example of how support from the administration can strengthen the students’ message.

“I feel honored and proud to be supporting a student leadership team that stands up and shows out and shows us what it means to be vocal and exercising our right to support community members across this country,” said Angélica Garcia, vice president of student services at Skyline College.

The Associated Students of Skyline College is instrumental in organizing walkouts and has the support of students and staff in their efforts. They effectively amplify the collective view of the student body through their ability to organize and assemble the entire campus community for a meaningful cause.

“As a member of the Associated Students of Skyline College, it’s our job to run programming and events on campus,” ASSC Senator Ameera Tullock said. “It was very important to me and to the rest of my fellow senators that we organized something in

support of the students that died in Parkland.”

The responsibilities of students go far beyond the walls of campus; most students have any number of priorities that take precedence over getting involved in student movements such as going to work, taking care of a loved one, or raising a child. However, this did not prevent a large number of students from coming out in support of student lives.

Skyline students walked out of class on March 14. There were 17 minutes of silence in remembrance of the 17 victims of the Parkland, Florida mass shooting that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Skyline President Dr. Regina Stanback Stroud expressed her solidarity and shared inspiration with the students.

Skyline students filled the seating area in the quad as students and staff addressed the walkout participants. Many students expressed to The Skyline View why they walked out.

“I am walking out because I am for stricter gun control,” said Michael Kepler, a Skyline student.

“I walked out today because it’s an important issue. It’s something that has been overlooked for a long time and I think it definitely is going to make an impact,” said Cindy Suarez, a Skyline student participating in the March 14 walkout. “Even if Skyline is a smaller school and

it’s raining, there is still students coming out, every person that’s here ... it matters and it counts.”

Some people misinterpret students and school faculty working together to promote change as students being influenced by professors and teachers; this is far from what is occurring on campuses. College professors and administrators across the state wholeheartedly support their students’ call to action, and are proud to follow the youths’ lead.

The power and influence of the big gun corporations and associations are the main reason for our legislators’ inaction in preventing mass murder weapons from entering the wrong hands. But the impact of an educational community standing in unison, composed of students, staff and administration may be the catalyst that is needed to get tougher gun regulation on the Senate floor.

The student population represents a portion of the country that is willing to make a small sacrifice to shed light on a greater issue. In a turbulent time for the government and foreign affairs, it is easy to lose sight of domestic problems that are in dire need of immediate action and solutions. Gun violence is only one of many fronts that students will impact in the coming years.

Kelly Hensley, an English teacher at Mills high school and ad-

viser to their campus newspaper The Thunderbolt, weighed in on students’ use of their education to bring about a positive change for the future.

“I want the students to have a voice and use their education to be productive citizens to shape our local, state, and national policies to reflect their concerns.

If we disregard their voice, we disenfranchise our next generation, and that weakens our democracy. Allowing them to organize and express their voices empowers them to make changes that reflect their views and bring hope that our society can be a safer and better place.”

ART AS A FORM OF EXPRESSION

In the generations of art, it has served and continues to serve as a form of communication and expression, allowing artists to tell stories and spark revolutions through canvas, or a blank space.

While some artists use their tools as a means to showcase their ancestral roots, others use art as a response to political issues - this is known as art as activism or simply, artivism.

History of art as a form of expression Across multiple platforms, including, but not limited to social media, the news, and text, artivism is a mix of art and activism.

Art as activism can be traced back to many historic events. One of its most expressive eras was the 1960s, in which many responded to the Vietnam War and civil rights movement through their music and art. This movement inspired young people of all backgrounds to speak up and has continued to do so in the present.

Whether it is through music, dance, art or physical murals, all different types of artists are forming a voice through their passions.

The stories of local artists Globally, San Francisco is recognized for its street art. For some, these streets are a space for local artists to take their art beyond paper. These talented artists all have different stories to tell, and different expressions to share. Locally, we see artists express themselves in a number of ways.

One of the many well known areas in San Francisco is the Mission District, commonly referred to as the Mission, which is recognized for its vivid and colorful murals that embrace the Hispanic/Latino culture of the neighborhood’s people. The art has become a part of the community and adds an additional layer of personality. Many of the Mission’s art can be found in the Balmy and Clarion Alleys. Additionally, there are notable murals spread throughout the city, on places from businesses to schools.

Stick Up by Carlos Gonzalez “I have led my life as a probation officer to see where a kid has a niche because a lot of these young delinquents that would get in trouble, some of them were good rappers, some were good at poetry, some were good artists, others had other talents” - Carlos Gonzalez Carlos Gonzalez Carlos Gonzalez is a Bay Area-based muralist who shares his stories and life experiences as an artist. Throughout his lifetime, and during his career, Gonzalez has painted multiple pieces throughout San Francisco. Gonzalez identifies his art as broadly photorealism combined with impressionistic and geometric styles.

As a troubled young man, Gonzalez ended up on probation.

During that time he was mentored by a teacher who helped him apply his skills into art as a form of expression. Because Gonzalez was inspired by so many people who did not give up on him, he continues to mentor youth as a prohibition officer, while also hoping to inspire them as an artist.

Gonzalez tries to acknowledge that people make mistakes, but for young artists, sometimes it is about putting that aside and

moving forward. By inspiring others, Gonzalez is passing down the torch while at the same time teaching youth about “hustling.”

Gonzalez considers the art industry a hustle because it ties back to the people you know and how you use the connects.

“You are going to navigate through who you can trust, who you can’t, who can help you versus who can’t and will bring you down, all that, you just got to learn that in life, in general,” Gonzalez said.

Now retired, Gonzalez does commercial art, incorporating different themes into his art. A prevalent theme in his pieces includes the stories of La Raza, or “The Race”, showcasing the cultural identity of his community.

“You could do whatever you want, and art could outrage people,” Gonzalez said. “Art can be controversial to where some people just love it and want the freedom to express themselves, and others wanna censor it because it offends. Art can be anything you want it to be. ... Art can be outrageous and offensive, or it can be timid, and everybody loves it.”

his adulthood, and while he doesn’t stick to any specific rules, he does constantly put what he is feeling at the moment into art.

“I’m not totally drawn into one thing. Sometimes it’s fun it’s about music and being happy,” Waters said. “And sometimes it’s about trying to paint something that involves the times of today. It’s just what I feel, whatever I’m feeling. I’m not totally drawn into one thing, as far as political. I’m just trying to express myself and hopefully, someone will feel a certain way ”

Enough Is Enough by Mel Waters Mel Waters Mel Waters, a Filipino- and African-American Bay Areabased muralist and fine artist, owns a Tattoo shop in the Bay Area. In his murals, Waters mainly focuses on black and white portraits with his most widely recognized being of Carlos Santana painted on 19th street and Mission street.

For Waters, it was his surroundings that inspired him.

The stories that would form part of who he is as an artist would begin as a kid.

“It all starts out as a youth when I was a kid, art was my outlet,” Waters said. “It was always, I just always had it in me to be creative and expressive.”

However, as a teen and young adult, Waters put his soon-to-be-discovered passion to the side and began to get into sports. During his early 20’s, Waters had other things to worry about such as his a nine-to-five job at a hospital. But later, he decided to turn his side thing, art, into his work.

“Once I found my love for art I poured myself into it every time I did,” Waters said. “I realized there was something there and people liked it, and so I invested more time in it, and I guess more of my skills started to show as I kept going.”

Eventually, Waters realized that art was not only his job after leaving the hospital, but also his life.

“Art changed my life,” Waters said. “I’m here now and it’s a blessing and I’ve been blessed to have opportunities along the way.”

Waters has now dived deeper into his passion, and continues to work as a full-time artist. He compares art to music, in the sense that some music is happy and some music puts out a message that makes you think. Waters has continued to use art as an outlet in

Alejandro Esquivias Being an artist can mean many different things; to some, it means taking it to murals and communities and to others, its a canvas pad. Skyline College has produced some artists with one being former Skyline student Alejandro Esquivas.

Esquivias, from Jalisco, Mexico, drew as a child but wasn’t as exposed to art. When he came to Skyline, he wanted to be a teacher and was studying early childhood education; it wasn’t until he took a drawing class with professor Amir Esfahani that he realized that this was his calling.

“I realized that I was expressing my ideas when I took art history classes because I learned how the people of the caves expressed themselves through art, whether it was paintings or sculptures, even though they did not know the concept of art” Esquivias said.

His path to learn more about art in general gave him the understanding of what his mind and hands were doing.

Expressing yourself through dance, music or paintings is a form of unspoken communication that inspires others and lets many see someone for who they really are, to see them in their purest form. In some ways, it is a form of breathing.

Esquivas had a hard time finding a way with words in which he could express himself, especially since he was born in a culture where men are raised to be “macho” and to not cry or be sensitive. Art has been a way in which he was able to breathe and let others see him through his art.

“I can express my feelings through it. I can express that I’m sad happy, mad, into politics, gay, kind, sarcastic and much more things through art, without having people’s eyes on me, but on my art,” Esquivias said.

Art as expression today Today’s society is going through challenging times across the globe and art has contributed into a reaction towards local, as well as national and international issues.

With a range of talent, artists are painting ideas that many choose to ignore, using their art as their voice to react to the injustices they see in this world.

Within its nature, art has no rules. There are no guidelines to express yourself. Art is meant to be the way the artist wants it to be, and art could be a reaction to outrage to established systems. But just because art could be a reaction to what’s going on, does not mean it has to be. Different artists have different stories to tell and different ideas to get across through their art.

Art is controversial yet peaceful, simple yet bold. No matter what form art is manifested - be it through a painting, dance or music - it is up to the artist to choose how they express themselves, what expressions they’ll share, and which ones they will keep to themselves.

The sound of inspiration

Music is defined as “an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color” according to dictionary.com. Music can be expressed in a variety of forms and is forever evolving by exposure and innovations.

Music’s meaning varies from person to person; it helps people express themselves, relate to other people and feel closer to a group or a culture.

“Me being Hispanic has definitely helped discover more about my culture, where I come from ... what differs us than the rest of the genres is the rhythm and the pride we have in our music. It is absolutely beautiful.”

However, it also may come down to what we are exposed to.

Daniel Alvarez, an San Francisco State University student and part-time DJ talked about the music that inspired him. “The

music that influences me the most is Spanish music,” Alvarez said.

“Music is so powerful that it’s even seeked [sic] as therapy for some people. Throughout the ages, music has been something very important to people; it’s been their sanctuary,” Alvarez

reveals. “Without music, I don’t know where I would be.

I wouldn’t know how I would control my emotions.”

Additionally, Alvarez uses Spanish music to connect him to his cultural roots.

With so much music out there, it might be hard to create something new. But music continues to innovate even today.

almost everywhere now: radio stations, Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud. All the music streaming apps have Spanish music but what is crazy now is that Spanish music is now collaborating with hip-hop artists to create something more,” said Alvarez. “What I see is a way to unite two cultures together and it is absolutely magical.”

The beauty of Spanish music gave him his inspiration and appreciation of music.

“I was introduced to Spanish music in my household. I grew up with it. I will always remember when I was younger, on Mondays, it would be my mom’s day off and she would take the time to clean the house and the first thing she would do is play music,” said Alvarez.

“Spanish rock and pop are her go-to genre she enjoys. Artists like Maná, Enrique Iglesias, Marc Anthony are all her favorite and the smile on her face is always so priceless as she sings and dances. It’s something that will forever be a part of me.”

Music also gives people a reason to gather and have fun.

By sharing a common love for a genre of music, friends can come together and have a good time.

“As a DJ, I prefer to play all types of music but my go-to is hip-hop and reggaeton because of the beats and rhymes they bring. They will always be upbeat and energetic, so parties will always be packed on the dance floor. It will always be my goto but I’m always open to new genres,” Alvarez said.

ballrooms and hotels and I always offer my services for free and there I play salsa, hip hop, and 80’s music to hype up the people attending so there is music for everyone.”

Alvarez enjoys playing music for others, lightening up people’s mood, and playing song after song. To him, music acts as a driving force which can be used to excite people.

“Music is more than just instruments coming together followed by a voice in the rhythm. It’s about how it impacts you and that is what music has done to my life,” Alvarez said.

“It has impacted in ways I can’t even imagine no matter what emotions I am going through I will have music to be able to support it.”

In addition, Alvarez recalls the unique experience he had during his first DJ gig.

“At first, it gets really nerveracking but when you see people enjoying themselves, singing and dancing to the music you are providing, you feel a lot more confident in yourself, where you are going to finish off strong,” Alvarez said.

Furthermore, being a DJ will never get old — the feeling he gets when he sees people having a good time never gets old.

“The best feeling is when I’m finished DJing for the night, the

people who come talk to me and tell me how much fun they had and how I did a good job will always be rewarding,” said Alvarez.

Music is a strong element that can make somebody feel good even during their worst moments.

Filipino Skyline student Jonathan Justo uses music to lift his mood.

“What music means to me, it helps keep me sane. Especially when I am stressed out like during finals time,” said Justo.

“Music is a big part of my life.”

On April 16, Justo performed an open mic event in Building 6 for Asian Heritage Day. He likes to play OPM, or Original Pilipino music, also known as Filipino pop music.

“OPM means a lot to me because it embodies both my passion and my culture,” said Justo. OPM music is popular and relevant even here in the United States.

Michelle Hawkins, an associate professor of social sciences and creative arts at Skyline, explains what motivates her to continue teaching this type of art.

“I decided to become a music professor while taking a vocal jazz class at De Anza College, a community college in Cupertino. I had already earned a BA in Music from UC

Berkeley, so I was taking this class for personal growth and enrichment, and I loved it,” Hawkins said. “Being in the choir made me realize that I wanted the same career as my professor, Roger Letson. This inspired me to go back to graduate school at USC and earn a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies. I knew this would enable me to be a community college professor someday.”

Hawkins also teaches a variety of classes: music appreciation, history of jazz and piano. She is also the director of the Skyline Vocal Jazz Ensemble. She also explains what’s so rewarding about being a music professor.

“I love working with students to create something beautiful and greater than themselves. I love seeing students push themselves to rise to their potential,” said Hawkins. “I really enjoy the rehearsal process where you can see and hear the transformation occur in real time. It’s so rewarding to hear a piece that starts out sounding pretty rough turn into something artistic and meaningful by concert time. I really see my role as being a coach for my students who is there to push and encourage them to bring out the best in themselves.”

She also goes described what inspires her music.

“I’m inspired to make music that is meaningful, beautiful,

and artistically creative and challenging. I’m constantly looking for new material and ways to challenge my singers with different styles and ways of expressing themselves through vocal music,” Hawkins said. “There is so much variety, creativity and wonder to explore in this world, and I feel honored to have the opportunity to share the art of choral music with students.”

Music will be a constant inspiration for generations for years to come as it is very interconnected. Music driving influence will always play a key role in helping us relate to each other and understand ourselves more than we can imagine.

Another person’s treasure

The sun begins to set as a young woman drives through the streets of The City. In her car, there’s usually a piece of used furniture: a table, lamp or dresser that is still mainly in good condition. During the day, she searches the streets, and then determines where to go next. There are so many ideas in mind for a broken down table, it can be turned into a chair, a combination lamp and desk or something else. In her mind, making furniture is freedom.

When it came to developing Martina’s business plan, she discussed her passions and her ability to find furniture and recreate it to a functioning use.”

McCarthy was one of the first people that Fazlic talked to about her desire to redesign furniture.

McCarthy decided to encourage her by letting the student have a go at a vintage chair of hers that she wanted redone.

Her passion for reworking furniture to promote the use and buying of eco-friendly furniture all began with a table that she once found on the street.

“I saw a lot on my time in San Francisco, a lot of furniture, and I missed my old job so I saw this table and I wanted to see it, so I separated it (the pieces),” said Fazlic.

She saw an idea of what the table could become. A woman passing by saw what she was doing as she was revamping the table outside of her apartment and asked if she could buy the table from her.

Of course, Fazlic agreed.

She then decided to close her interior design business and moved on to repurposing furniture. With her degree, she yearned for more to do.

There is also recyclable waste of 7.4 million tons of “disposal-related” materials, that can possibly be reused which makes the waste in total of 42.7 million tons disposed in 2016.

Fazlic thinks that taking recycled materials including furniture will help the Earth one piece at a time especially when waste or ‘trash’ can be turned into something useful.

The aspiring boutique owner likes to recycle because it has less damage and it gives her the opportunity to incorporate that part into redesigning furniture. Even though furniture donations come to her through friends, she drives through San Bruno, San Francisco, and other areas to see what residents have put in front of their house.

Due to limited space, she has to thoroughly think about where she can store her items and leave them.

Right now, she is working with Zanassi who is helping by looking for a storage space for her.

Living the dream Fazlic not only makes furniture, but also makes jewelry and dabbles in a few other hobbies. For her main job, she is an assistant manager for Villa Italia, a wine company, and at night, she works as a server.

She sees herself as an artist, as does Zanassi and McCarthy.

What sets her apart is that she pursues her dreams a step further by turning it into a business venture and a lifestyle.

For example, her apartment is simple, neat and has character.

The furniture she has is either used, repurposed or is from her home country that will soon be turned into art.

“You see, even if I finish a project, I still never am truly done with it,” Fazlic states. “I’m always thinking of something and playing with the idea of it at least.”

Her living area consists of a partially finished desk, with a homemade lamp sitting on top of it. The lamp is made out of a food jar and decorated with sea glass that she carefully picked out from the beach and then glued on. Fazlic was inspired by the beach and wanted to use it in a way that keeps it natural.

Some projects were said have taken only a week to complete.

The lamp took longer than that.

Her projects tend to also be determined by the size of the furniture, which can be restraining.

Her “studio”, is her vehicle parking place at her apartment building. Since it is open to the air, it is perfect for her to lay her projects on the cement of her parking spot and begin painting them.

Decorating and putting together furniture can be messy and has already damaged the inside of her apartment because of the paint and glue.

Inspirations Her ideas come from everywhere. She has an idea and draws from that but does not stay close to that plan because her ideas change, especially if she does not like the way something looks when she is redesigning furniture. When it comes to painting a piece, she only does a light coat of paint first and lets it set so that she has wiggle room to change it if the color does not sit well with her.

“I know that I will change my mind eventually about something,” Fazlic says.

“That is why I work quickly depending on what I’m putting on it, so I can take it off if I don’t like it.”

She explains that even though a piece in her home is “done” she will change it again if something inspires her.

“She has the eye to see a broken-down chair and to turn it into something fabulous,” McCarthy says.

“She’s creative that way.”
