Water Balloon Bandits A woman flagged down an officer on patrol outside of the University Village Dorms on the evening of June 27. She reported that she had been driving when she felt something hit the front to her car and then several more things hit the top of her car, and she wasn’t sure what it had been. The officer checked out the vehicle and saw no damage but did see that the car had water on it and pieces of colored rubber. The officer informed the woman that it was likely that there were kids throwing water balloons at passing vehicles, and that no damage had been done. The woman needed no further assistance, and the officer looked around the reported area with no success before clearing the scene. Bad Luck Brian While an officer was driving near the Highway 89 and Harrison Boulevard Junction on June 27, the vehicle next to him made a dangerous lane change that the officer had to avoid by quickly decelerating. The officer
WSUPD received a report that an individual had been trespassing in the West Tunnel of the Dee Events Center on June 25. Officers responded and found that there was a shirtless man sleeping in the west tunnel with a lot of bags surrounding him. The officers pushed the bags away from the individual before waking him to get his information and ask what he had been doing there. The individual gave the officers his information. When the information was entered into the system, the individual had been reported missing by his mother near the end of 2020. The man was told and given his mother’s contact information before being asked to leave the premises, which he did after that. The mother was also contacted to report that her son was safe but did not want to talk to her. She was informed that they had given him her information for if and when he wanted to reach her. A Public Pee Performance Officers responded to a report of a disturbance by the UTA Bus Stop near
the S1 parking lot on June 25. A male passenger was arguing with the bus driver about paying his fare. When officers spoke with the Bus Driver, he reported that the passenger had urinated on the sidewalk by newspaper stands. He also reported that this passenger had a history of disturbances and refusing to pay his fares. The UTA Police Department was contacted, and they asked for a report of his information to be taken for future information, but they did not need action taken. The officers on the scene attempted to communicate with the passenger, but he refused to speak with officers at first and began joking. When asked why he had relieved himself on university property, he responded that he could not hold it more. They documented his information for the UTAPD and gave him a warning for public urination. An Extended Elevator Stay A university employee was stuck inside an elevator in Lindquist Hall on June 23. The elevator was able to be opened after maintenance and an officer arrived, and the employee was unharmed. The elevator had lost power and was non-functioning, and out-of-order signs were made out to make sure no one else would attempt to enter it.
Bruised Bumpers In the R4 parking lot on June 23, a vehicle attempted to park between two vehicles, but scraped his passenger bumper down the length of the one on the right. The driver got out and looked at the damage before pulling out and parking in another space in the parking lot. The owner of the vehicle was cited for not leaving information at the scene of a collision. A Series of Unfortunate Events On the night of June 22, a vehicle had stalled out in the Dee Events Center Parking Lot, and a tow company could not get there until the morning. Parking Services was notified about the vehicle, and the owner was told to recover it by the next day. The next day, several individuals were pushing the vehicle when they lost control of it after an incline and it rolled into two other vehicles. The other drivers were okay, and they exchanged information, and the vehicle that had rolled was towed away.

During the summer months, visitors will find a colorful herd of horses adorning the streets of downtown Ogden. These life-size painted horses display a wide array of designs, from patriotic stars to local views. On display from June to September, the fiberglass horse statues are part of an art extravaganza called “Trail to Pioneer Days,” put on by Ogden Pioneer Days. Most of the horses are found on Historic 25th street, but they can also be found in other parts of downtown, including near the Solomon Center and by Union
Station. All horses are facing toward the Ogden Pioneer Stadium, where Ogden Pioneer Days originated. “It just adds a sense of beauty to our community,” said Gena Blonquist-Black, Ogden Pioneer Days vice chair of special events, hospitality and opening ceremonies. “It adds a flare of western heritage to our already neat Ogden City.” This year the collection includes 50 horses. Blonquist-Black said new ones are added as the organization gets new sponsors. The sponsors then get to choose local artists to paint the horses and work on designs with them. Some of these artists have been Weber State University alumni.
Since the horses are made out of fiberglass, they are subject to damage from moving, storage, natural elements and being out on display to the public. Because of this, Blonquist-Black said that Ray Ellis, the director of Trail to Pioneer Days, dutifully makes sure the horses are maintained, cleaned and repaired every year, calling back artists to repair or redo paintings as needed. Blonquist-Black has seen many families taking pictures by the horses and says the herd is loved by both tourists and the local community alike. Every year these horses excite many people and help bring the community together. “That’s just something unique to Ogden
City that other cities don’t have,” she said. “And I just think it’s unique, it’s creative and it’s just a way for artists and sponsors to express their creative sides.”

The Musical Chairs Jackpot is an event where 20 participants battle it out to see who will be the last one sitting on the chair and be rewarded with a wad of cash. July 23 will host a “pink out” for breast cancer awareness. Ever since 2004, Wrangler, one of the main sponsors of the PRCA, has been a major advocate promoting the message of breast cancer awareness. The Miss Rodeo Utah Freestyle Horsemanship Competition will be held on July 23 as well, and cowgirls will compete for a crown
by trying to “wow the crowd” and a panel of judges by riding on some very agile and quick steeds. The rodeo will also bring back the Cowboy Mounted Shooters competition on July 24 as many locals look forward to watching cowboys shooting blank ammunition out of rifles at targets while riding a horse around the dirt track.

The Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo is back after being canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. The annual rodeo is considered one of the top five rodeos in the country, and it will be making its long-anticipated return July 20–24 at Ogden Pioneer Stadium. Some of the best professional cowboys in the world will be showcasing their skills in front of the crowds gathered in celebration of Pioneer Day. The first night of the rodeo will be the Family and Education Appreciation Night, and the
Weber County Junior Posse Exhibition Barrel Racing Event will be held that evening. For the less-experienced participants, there will be a mutton busting 5–8 p.m. for children who want to ride sheep and compete for prizes. The National Day of the Cowboy falls on July 21 and is a holiday commemorating cowboys and cowgirls who continue to contribute and preserve the way of life of a cowboy. July 21 will also be First Responders Appreciation Night acknowledging the hard work and sacrifice they have given to their communities for the past year throughout the pandemic.
