My favorite show is NWSS because there’s just something about the atmosphere there. With the mountains in the view and the yards down below makes it a second to none view All-time favorite show animal and why? My favorite show animal would have to be “gunner”, the duroc barrow that I won the Indiana State Fair with. Gunner was not your typical show pig, he has a personality like none other.

I can’t just think of one person because everyone works as a team. First and foremost on the cattle side of things I would like to thank my Mom and dad, everyone knows this is a very expensive hobby and without them supporting me none of this would be possible. My grandma and grandpa for taking care of everything on the farm while we are gone at shows, and my sister for always helping out when we need it.

Then on the hog side of things I can’t thank Travis Platt and the Platt family enough for everything they’ve done for me and taught me. I wouldn’t be where I’m at today in the showpig ring if it wasn’t for them. I’ve been very grateful in the showring in my years of showing and I can’t thank these people enough because without them, none of them would be possible.

The National Western Stock Show is my favorite. I love the yards and the hill. I’ve met new people every year and have great memories. And I also love the food.

All-time favorite show animal and why? My crossbred steer, Lucky, from last year. When he was little he would always act scared and run away. He only trusted four people in his lifetime and that’s how I grew a strong relationship with him. He didn’t like very many people and the day before the show at the National Western even I couldn’t work with him.

On show day it took lots of patience and I talked calmly to him the whole time. I’ll never forget Lucky because he taught me a lot and changed my life forever.

Favorite show memory: The moment my steer was selected as Reserve Grand Champion at the American Royal in Kansas City in 2016.

Least favorite show-day task: Scratching my calf to make it stand still for dad to clip it.

Favorite TV Show: Chicago Fire Favorite book/author: The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks Favorite activities outside of the show ring: Basketball, track, singing, photography and working in the cattle or pig barn with Olivia.

aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.

Meet Your 2017 AJCA Youth Leaders The Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is led by a group of dynamic youth. The board of directors consists of four officers and nine area representatives that are the same areas as the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association. These thirteen individuals are some of the best and brightest up and coming livestock leaders in the region. We are both pleased and proud to have them building and directing our Association.

Zachary Andrews, seventeen years old from Camden, is serving this year as the AJCA President. AJCA allows Zachary opportunities to meet new people and network with other people who share his passion for livestock and Hereford cattle. President Andrews has set a goal this year to increase participation in AJCA’s Super Saturday public speaking photography contests. Zachary also wants to get to know more AJCA members. He likes AJCA because it is more than just showing cattle. Involvement in AJCA promotes leadership throughout the cattle industry.

Grace Harris, sixteen years old from Horatio, is the AJCA President-Elect. Grace enjoys her involvement in AJCA because it is a positive organization. She says that AJCA has provided her with opportunities to move from her comfort zone to try new things. Qualities that Grace ad-

mires in good leader is someone who makes a strong effort to involve others. She says a good leader is one who makes members feel valued, like they belong, have a purpose and a place in the organization. Grace’s goal for this year is to grow as a leader and to also improve her abilities as a showman.

Hailey Hilfiker, seventeen years old from Piggott, is the AJCA Secretary. Hailey’s goal this year is to be a good representative of AJCA and to increase membership. Hailey’s livestock related goal is to continue to build her herd of Shorthorn cattle. Hailey believes that AJCA offers its members many opportunities to grow and develop important life skills, leadership skills and social skills needed to be successful in life. Hailey is a high school senior. She will attend the University of Arkansas this fall majoring in pre-professional animal sciences.

Logan Sigmon, AJCA Treasure is sixteen years old and from Berryville. Logan says he would encourage anyone to get involved in AJCA because it allows you opportunities to work with and get to know a great group of kids! Being an AJCA member gives you opportunities to meet livestock people from all over the state. Logan has an important job with AJCA in that he is leading the effort to secure AJCA sponsors. The

goal for this year’s sponsorships is $12,000. Logan has set a leadership goal to be elected president-elect at the end of this year. His show goal is to earn the Supreme Overall Bull in the Top 5 competition. He is off to a solid start on all of his goals for 2017!

Ryan Lane, fourteen years old, is from Siloam Springs. Ryan is the Area 1 Vice President. Ryan admires a leader with strong people skills. He enjoys his involvement with AJCA because the organization allows him to spend time with his friends, meet new people and travel to new places all while doing something he loves – showing cattle. Ryan is excited about all the leadership opportunities he will have his year on the AJCA board.

Kendon McAlister, of Berryville is the Area 2 Vice President. Kendon is ultra-enthusiastic about showing cattle. He is like a sponge soaking up advice and techniques from those he admires and respects. Kendon is willing to learn new things.

The leadership quality that best describes Kendon is passionate. Kendon is passionate about showing cattle. He is passionate about life. His passion for his responsibilities and for showing livestock will greatly benefit AJCA and serve him well in all his future endeavors.

Gabbi Litchford, thirteen years old, lives in Horatio. Gabbi is the Area 3 Vice President. Gabbi loves being a part of AJCA. She encourages anyone who shows cattle to become an AJCA member. In AJCA, Gabbi says everyone has a place!

Gabbi’s goal for this show season is to be in the hunt for the overall high point showman. This year Gabbi plans to focus on positivity. A quality she admires in a leader is integrity.

Baylee Mangrum is sixteen years old and from Paragould. Baylee serves as the Area 4 Vice President. Qualities Baylee admires in a good leader are strong organizational skills, being able to stay on task and someone who will interact with others. Baylee’s goal for this year is to be as helpful to others. Baylee encourages everyone who shows cattle to join AJCA. She says joining the

association will change your life for the better simply because of all the friends you will make.

Mallory Hobson is sixteen years old. She is from Fouke. Mallory is the Area 5 Vice President. Mallory loves exhibiting her cattle. AJCA provides Mallory with many opportunities both to develop her leadership skills and to network with likeminded youth and adults. Mallory can always be counted on to do her part and more at AJCA activities. The leadership quality that Mallory exhibits and admires in others is that of a “worker bee”.

Blaine Wildy is from Manila. He is sixteen-yearsold. Blaine serves as the Area 6 Vice President.

Blaine’s personal cattle showing goal this year is to be more disciplined with his daily barn tasks.

Discipline will pay off as Blaine focuses on chasing banners! Blaine values the time he is able to spend with his friends while at all the AJCA shows.

Blaine’s career goal is to graduate from college and then return to the family row crop farm but continue to build his cattle herd.

Jacob Tapley, Area 7 Vice President, is an eighteen-year-old high school senior from Greenbrier.

Jacob says that being an AJCA member allows you to gain lots of experience and knowledge as you are provided opportunities to participate in the many AJCA sanctioned shows. A strong work ethic is something Jacob admires most in a March 2017 • theshowcircuit.com

“Grayma” paints 90% of the toys at The Happy Toy Maker.

They say if you can’t find it at Wal-Mart, then you don’t need it, but that isn’t always true. Entrepreneurs Jerry Sims and Sarah Wray saw a need for great agriculturally related products and created their own companies, respectfully to fill the void.

While their products aren’t on the shelves of a supercenter store, they can be found at many ranchers and showmen’s homes, as they uniquely reflect the industry we all represent and love. The toys and products they sell have been carefully created and designed with the agricultural industry in mind and give youth the opportunity to play with toys or have merchandise that reflect their livelihoods and the livelihoods of their families.

Happy Toy Maker Located in Happy, Texas, Jerry Sims proudly farms irrigated silage and dry land wheat. In addition, he has served as a volunteer fireman for the town for 35 years, and as the chief the last 18 years. While that may sound like a full-time schedule, he has also found time in the last 10 years to daily build toys and sell them. Jerry de-

signs and builds western toys that are far more durable than other toys a child can receive these days and are all custom built, hand-made and designed out of steel.

“About 18 years ago, when my boys were toddlers, they asked for a doctoring chute, the only problem was that I couldn’t find any toy chutes to purchase for them. So, I built them one for Christmas I realized after I gave it to them that a chute wouldn’t do too much good without the snake and tub and load out chute to go with it. So, every year for birthdays and Christmas gifts, I just kept building more and more toys to add to their collection,” Jerry recalled, “When they got too big to play with them, the neighbors started asking for items. In 2006, I started selling to the public and that year we

Last year, The Happy Toymaker had the opportunity to bring a smile on more than just Christmas day and birthdays as Jerry hosted a young boy through the Kids Wish Network, at his place. The terminally ill boy from Washington had a wish to visit Happy, Texas, and play with the toys for a day. Jerry and his family were happy to accommodate and welcome their new friend on to the place. They also had him star in some of their promotional videos on Facebook, showing how the equipment worked.

“It was an honor to get to spend time with him and add to his Happy Toymaker collection. We showed him around the shop, and set up special events for him at the firehouse and the Ranch Rodeo Finals in Amarillo,” Jerry said.

The Stock Show Toy Co. sells toy show steers, stock show books for kids, adult coloring books and stock show charms, which fit Pandora bracelets. The hardest part of managing her company, Sarah said, is finding the patience and self-control to do so. “I really like to dream, but one of the best lessons I learned in my first business (Farmon.com) was to learn how to play a long-term game. Sometimes you have to allow a business or a product to develop. I find that you need to be patient enough to let your business develop, but smart enough to let your customer tell you what they want and to know when to listen,” she advised.

To help with this, she enlists the help of her own three kids. “I can’t say enough about testing your idea before you go too far down the rabbit hole. I come up with all the concepts for the designs and then work with very talented people to make them come to life. My kids are a huge inspiration for me when it comes to product design. All three of them have shown since they were three-years-old, so if they love the products, I know other kids will also, plus they don’t hold back, they are the best product testers-if they don’t like it, they tell me!” she chuckled.

Sarah realized early on in her career she wasn’t a fan of driving in the big cit-

ies and has opted to market her company 100 percent online, which allows her to keep the lifestyle that she loves, which includes lots of quality time at the farm with her family and cattle.

“I enjoy finding my inner kid and creating new products. The most rewarding part of starting this company has been the pictures that have come in of our toy steers inside a homemade show barn, or even an Elf on the Shelf giving one of our books as a gift. Knowing my customers are enjoying their products is the reason why I keep selling and designing,” she said.

In the spirit of keeping herself off the travel circuit and the products strictly online, Sarah relies heavily on Facebook, in addition to her website.

She prides herself on giving value and keeping her customers as her focus. This combination does the “heavy lifting” portion of her marketing. She tends to leave “gifts” on her Facebook site for visitors, also. “I love to give my customers free downloads on our Facebook page. There are free stock show Valentines Day cards, Christmas tags, coloring pages and other cards on the site. I have the best customers and I feel so fortunate to do business with them, so this is one way I can thank them for our partnership,” she noted.

VFD AND THE SMALL PRODUCER

T

he Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) may be a good policy for the beef cattle industry, and a workable tool for the larger and even medium-scale producer, but could be an unfair animal welfare issue for the small-scale producer, and may put the smaller producer at a competitive disadvantage. As always is the case, the devil is in the details. The problem is not with the VFD policy itself.

The problem is how some of the feed manufacturers are choosing to implement the policies. It is my opinion that little thought has been given regarding how the VFD affects the small producer.

Case in point: a small producer with 12 cows (four that calve each fall and eight that calve each spring) decides to wean his four fall calves. In the past, this producer would wean the four calves and start them March 2017 • theshowcircuit.com

on feed (probably a continuation of the creep-feeding regimen) utilizing a starter concentrate or a complete feed containing an antibiotic for 14 to 28 days.

In the past, this feeding strategy included an antibiotic at a therapeutic level to treat/prevent respiratory disease. There were numerous products of this type on the market and they were used satisfactorily to keep calves healthy during stressful events such as weaning.

One such product (for example) recommended feeding 10 pounds of product per day per calf to supply 350mg of Chlortetracycline and 350mg of Sulfamethazine for 14 to 28 days.

Today, if a producer (any/all producers) wants to utilize this or another similar product, the producer first consults with his/her veterinarian who must write a VFD. The producer then takes the VFD form to the local feed dealer, who can then sell the feed product containing antibiotic to the producer. That process all seems easy, feasible and doable, right? Here is the catch. For the larger-scale producer who requires 2,000 lbs. or more of the feed product there is no problem – as long as the producer gives the feed dealer sufficient time to order the feed, usually between 4 days to one week lead time.

Most (maybe all) local feed dealers are not going to be able to floor stock feeds containing antibiotics. As of the date of this article, feed manufacturers are not allowing feed dealers to floor stock feeds containing antibiotics. The feed manufacturers are requiring the feed dealers to place minimum orders of one or two tons of the medicated feed. This is not a problem for large- scale producers, but for the small producer in the example scenario who has four weaned calves to treat that require 10 pounds of medicated feed per day per calf – the producer only needs 560 pounds of medicated feed (11 bags) if the feed is fed for 14 days or 1,120 pounds of medicated feed (22 bags) if the feed is fed for 28 days.

The feed dealer cannot obtain that small of an order from the feed manufacturer and the VFD will not allow the producer to order more medicated feed than required per VFD Form.

Today under the VFD, the small producer has an animal welfare problem. The best methodology is to

prevent respiratory disease through proper vaccination and to prevent/treat respiratory disease with oral medicated feed. However, small producers may have no option but to vaccinate and treat with antibiotic injections. The least stress for calves is to treat/prevent respiratory disease orally with medicated feed for a short period of time. Waiting for calves to get sick then handling calves through a chute to inject antibiotics is stressful to calves and is an animal welfare issue.

There is a practical solution. Feed manufacturers should allow feed dealers to floor stock medicated feeds that smaller producers can purchase in smaller amounts with a proper VFD Form. The NCBA, state beef associations, Farm Bureau organizations and perhaps national breed associations should lobby feed manufacturers to work with local feed dealers to resolve this issue so small-scale beef producers can have access to medicated feed when a veterinarian/producer consultation warrants the need.

Regarding a completely different topic, but worthy of noting; several ethanol plants have been experiencing dryer problems this year (a situation that occurs periodically over the years). Consequently, these plants have large volumes of wet distiller’s grains (70% moisture) to move ASAP. Often these “fire sales” result in distillers grains being offered at very attractive (low) prices but the caveat is that the distiller’s grains must be hauled away immediately.

Some of the feedlots I work with have been able to purchase these distiller’s grains ranging in moisture content from 60% DM to 30% DM for $20 to $30: ton.

To store the volume of distiller’s grains these feedlots must accept, they have been placing the distiller’s grains into silage bags. When I was at ISU we conducted several research studies storing distiller’s grains into plastic bags. This storing procedure works well and preserves the distiller’s almost indefinitely. Therefore, keep in contact with the ethanol plants near you and be prepared for a “fire sale.” Once this situation occurs, your biggest problem will be finding enough trucks to haul the distiller’s grains in a timely fashion that meets the needs of the ethanol plant.

He is basically a total outcross to our cow herd as well as an outcross to most of the popular pedigrees in the Maine breed today.
