For Steers AND Heifers Sullivan’s

Fresh & Feminine

TM

“The secret to eye appealing show cattle!”

“The simple science to freshen-up a front end while maintaining the body capacity desired. We have had tremendous success with Fresh & Feminine™ for over 10 years. Now available to the public for the first time. You will noticeably see the results.” - John Sullivan

Sullivan’s

Black Velvet

This exciting new product has been is proven with results and the demand for repeat orders has been tremendous. In fact, many of the major steer and heifer show winners from this fall have feed FRESH & FEMININE™, the secret to eye appealing show cattle!” Feminine shape and freshness throughout the front end of your show animal spells ultimate suc- cess or failure in the show ring today. FRESH & FEMININE™ is not just another supplement. Tried and true for many years, FRESH & FEMININE™ has been the secret, fed at Sullivan Farms for over 10 years. It has been an integral part of their feeding regiment and credited with producing outstanding freshness and ultimate show ring success of their cattle at major shows year-in and year-out. This is how this feed supplement works … the superior science of FRESH & FEMININE™ features a combination of strategic vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and a high concentration of by-pass protein sources. This chemistry boosts metabolic fat burning in the body that targets spe- cific areas of the body to reduce fat content, most notably in the neck and brisket area. The animal has a more feminine, attractive physique and even moves better. This helps to offset the results seen from aggressive, high energy show cattle diets. All natural and fertility safe for open heifers, bred heifers, steers and bulls. Simply top dress 6 oz. per head per day of this pelleted supplement on your current ration until desired freshness has been achieved.

Hair Dye

Leaves the hair with more body and an incredible, brilliant black shine. Proven safe. No hair burn. Black Velvet is designed specifically for cattle hair. Black Velvet hair dye turns grey, red-tinted or faded hair into a beautiful jet-black color. Black Velvet infuses the hair with more softness, body and incredible shine. Very easy to use. Apply at home to clean, dry hair. You will need three to four kits of Black Velvet for a 1,000 pound animal. Simply combine the entire contents of the Dye (black bottle) and Activator (red bottle) into a spray bottle or blower fogger, shake well and apply liberally onto hair coat. Gently work into hair coat with a Smart Comb. Leave the dye in the hair for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse out with water until the water runs clear. Will not towel off. For long lasting beauty and color, Black Velvet is truly brilliant.

Follow these steps for the ultimate benefit of this NEW Product ... STEP 1 ... Glue the leg with Sullivan’s Prime Time or Tail Adhesive STEP 2 ... Spray on White Powder’Ful (shake well) to build-up leg and thicken the hair follicles. It also provides a brighter visual for clipping. STEP 3 ... Use Powder’Ful to build your leg alternating it with small amounts of Tail Adhesive. If you are building a black leg use Black Powder’Ful. This will allow for better coverage when you paint. STEP 4 ... Once you are done building the leg with Powder’Ful, the final step is to completely cover the leg with Black Finisher for a natural black look. Powder’Ful also works excellent on the tail heads and building loins & bellies.

Sullivan’s

POWDER’FUL Hair Thickening Powder. Powder Spray

• Follicle Builder

• Fast Drying

• Easy to Clip through

• Doesn’t weigh the hair down like other leg builders. • Most natural full look you’ll get from any product • Won’t leave hair wet and globby • Available in Black Powder & White Powder

POWDER’FUL is the only product on the market that can give you a fuller and bigger look without adding on layers of and layers of paint and adhesive, which leaves the hair wet, heavy, and unnatural. POWDER’FUL leaves the hair looking fuller without being able to tell there is anything there. The two color options, white and black, make it easy to build legs without having to use an excess of paint to cover it up.

An ideal choice for color shades from yellow to golden, Stierwalt Cream ProTouch is first of its kind to be offered for cream or blonde cattle. A Cowman’s Best Friend at Calving Time!

Now available with digital scale!

Important Calf Catcher Benefits... - Enables quick and safe calf catching! - Convenient, step in access of producer! - Holder secures calf for easy processing! - User-friendly inside release of calf to cow. - Move calves easier with cow following! - Less cow stress, mother can see and smell calf! - Reduces danger while working new calves! - Cuts labor, one person now does the work!

Designed for Processing Safety - Guards cattlemen against protective mother cow! - Built to last! Durable, all welded quality construction! - Tested and Proven in multiple terrains! - Quick mount and dismount on both ATV and UTV (Side x Side) units! - Sold throughout the US and Canada - Customer testimonials on website! Laurel Gilbertson, NE For me, it’s all about safety. With my calf catcher, at 73 years, I have no fear of any cow, and that is mighty important to me and my family. It is safe, and a much easier way to deal with the new borns and their protective mothers. It is quiet, allowing me to go through the cows virtually unnoticed when getting ready to catch a calf. Importantly, the mother cows do not get near as excited as when I used to work new borns the old way. Cows, babies and myself are all far better off because of it. Last spring, I paired out all 80 pairs to new pastures after processing their calves, and every cow without exception followed the catcher with their calf standing inside the holder. There is not a piece of equipment on the place that can equal the value of my calf catcher. I could not, and would not be in business without it!

With the average age of producers getting older, labor more difficult to find and safety a primary issue of everyone... using it for your future calf crops is a must! “Would never calve cows again without it! No worries now about getting hurt while processing babies, as we all know how protective a good mother cow can be.”

H

ave you ever considered: “If dad died today, what would happen to the family farm (or ranch)?” Not only does Jolene Brown ask families that question, she’s counseled families who deal with that very real scenario. Iowa-based Brown lives and works on a farm with her husband Keith, but she’s also a champion for agriculture through her roles as an author, professional speaker, and family business consultant. Brown says she’s on a mission to share best practices for families to help successfully transition their farms and ranches to the next generation. Another question Brown likes to ask is this: Have you ever been bit by an elephant? The answer is always no. But, then she asks, “How about a mosquito?” To which she makes the point, “It’s the little things that get us, and soon we are fighting on the way to the funeral home.” As an advocate for family members to create a succession plan for the future of their business, Brown promotes a business-first mindset and says, “That does not mean the family is less important. Instead, it suggests that members honor the family so much that they are willing to take care of business.” Along with that, she emphasizes, “Just because you were born together doesn’t mean you should work together. Acceptance in a family is unconditional. Acceptance in a business is conditional and not a birthright.” Before family members come back to the farm or ranch, Brown advises that they should work for someone else for 2 to 3 years. She points out that this gives them a multitude of perspective from taking orders from a boss and learning to show up on time, to realizing they can be fired. If the business owners and leaders do agree that additional family members (the next generation) can and should be incorporated into the business from a financial perspective, Brown says several aspects should be considered.

She explains that in order for a business to be successful, the focus cannot be on “hiring family members.” Instead the focus must be on “hiring worthy employees.” If a family member has the right training, experience, personality and character, brings the needed skills and understands the finances, they may be the right fit. But do not discount the in-laws who are active in the business. Brown says they just might be the best qualified and have the outside perspective you need. For more about Brown and the advice she shares, visit www.JoleneBrown.com. She offers a book entitled, Sometimes You Need More Than a 2x4 with “how-to-tips” and real-life experiences of working with families in business.

• • •

More Advice For the younger generation who is interested in returning to the family operation, Brown emphasizes that they must do their part – get an education that is relevant to the industry, gain experience through full-time employment for two or three years away from the family operation, and have a fire in their belly for the job. As well, she says, be kind, courteous and respectful, and work to exceed expectations to add value to the family business. Then, Brown says if the senior generation truly intends for the business to continue, the result will be an intentional and gradual movement through the ranks of laborer, manager, leader and next owner. However, through this process Brown has two pieces of advice:

Questions to Ask What skills does the individual who wants to come back to the farm or ranch bring to the business? Are they a great mechanic, herdsman, etc – and does the business need those attributes? What does it cost the business to hire an additional person? Will they receive health insurance or other fringe benefits – what are they going to cost the business, and does that cost equal their worth? Does the person who wants to join the business still live at home? Does Mom still do the potential employee’s laundry? If so, say no to employment until they live under their own roof, Brown advises. Brown says each of these questions are important to consider. She clarifies, “the business must look at hiring a worthy employee – not just a son or daughter. Hire employees wisely, because it’s hard to fire them in a family business.” She is also adamant about one thing: “Parents do not owe their kids a business.” Rather, Brown says, “decide what is needed to lead and continue the business before deciding who will fill that role.”

Four THings

While Jolene Brown believes acceptance in a family business is not a birthright, she does believe acceptance in a family is unconditional. And, she says parents owe their children four key things: First, morals and values, and an understanding of what is right and wrong. Second, an opportunity for an education. Brown emphasizes, “I did not say parents had to completely pay for it!” Third, develop and discuss plans for the transition of management, leadership and ownership. This includes a legal estate plan and a buy-sell agreement. Brown explains, “if the assets of your estate affect the continuation of the business or those currently working in the business, you must let the ‘rules of the game’ be known. Your kids don’t have to like them, but they deserve to know them.” Fourth, a listing of details beyond the will. Brown admits these can be tough questions to prepare for, but she believes kids deserve to know things like what you want done with your body upon death, where important documents are located, passwords to accounts, key advisors, etc.

•• • •

1. Hope is not a good business strategy. 2. If it’s not in writing, it doesn’t exist. Lastly, to the senior generation, Brown says, “Be a mentor and a wise master. The number one job of a leader in a legacy business is to replace yourself.”

Missouri CLUB CALF ASSOCIATION

The Royal is now history and so is the deadline for applying to the MCCA Board. Our new board will begin meeting and planning for the 2015 show season. We are fortunate to have three advisors to the board this year. Brianne Bishop and Taylor Loges are former MCCA members and board members who have chosen to continue supporting the youth in Missouri. We’re working through the rules and regulations this winter to clarify a few items. If you’re interested in hosting a points show or if you have a suggestion, please let Taylor know and she’ll pass it on to the board for a decision. I’m sure most of you have your calves and are excited about the coming show season. Remember that banners are won in the barn; not at the show. The time you put into your calf will pay off soon. Keep rinsing, brushing and blowing on those calves and we’ll see you soon! Taylor loges Melinda BasTian loges11@live.missouristate.edu melinda.bastian@hotmail.com 660-641-4148 573-253-6104

RETIREMENT

SavINgS OptIONS fOr thE SElf-EMplOyED

a

Courtesy of: Matthew e. o’Donnell | ViCe PresiDent, Morgan stanley s a self-employed individual, you have access to several types of retirement plans. as is the case for large plans, a plan-of-one allows you to put away large amounts of money on a tax-deferred basis while deducting your contributions from your income.

among your options as a self-employed individual are iras, defined contribution and defined benefit plans. IRA OptIOns the two main types of iras for self-employed individuals are the simplified employee Pension (seP) and savings incentive Match Plan for employees (siMPle). a key benefit of both is the ability to contribute tax deferred amounts greater than that of a traditional ira. a seP allows you to make tax-deferred contributions of 20% of net earnings from self-employment (25% of compensation for incorporated businesses), to a maximum contribution that is set annually

178 January February 2015 • theshowcircuit.com

by the irs. (for 2015, the earnings limit is $265,000 and the maximum contribution is $53,000). generally, it is up to you as to whether to contribute in a given year, allowing for fluctuations in your business’s cash flow. a siMPle ira is designed for employers with 100 or fewer employees; self-employed individuals make contributions as both employee and employer. for 2015, you may contribute 100% of compensation but not more than $12,500 through salary reduction as an employee. in addition, you may make catch-up contributions of $3,000 if you are at least age 50. as your own “employer,” you must make an employer contribution, matching (up to a maximum of 3% of compensation) or a nonelective contribution of 2% of compensation (for purposes of the 2% nonelective contribution, compensation is limited to $265,000 for 2015). DefIneD COntRIbutIOn OptIOns self-employed individuals may also operate a 401(k), profit sharing or money purchase plan. these are more complex to implement and maintain, even for a sole proprietor. among the requirements is the

annual filing of irs form 5500, annual return/report of employee Benefit Plan, or, if eligible, form 5500-sf for small employee plans or form 5500-eZ for sole proprietors although 401(k)s are associated with larger companies, they are also available to self-employed individuals. often referred to as a solo 401(k), it has the same rules and limits as traditional 401(k)s other than it is, by design, exempt from discrimination testing. elective deferrals for 2015 top out at $18,000, (plus $6,000 in catch-up contributions if applicable). additional contributions of up to 25% of net earnings from self-employment are also permitted, up to a maximum of $53,000 for combined total contributions (including elective deferrals). a profit sharing plan allows discretionary contributions up to the smaller of 25% of compensation or the annual irs limit ($53,000 in 2015). Money purchase plans have the same limits, yet contributions are required. DefIneD benefIt OptIOn if you prefer a plan that will promise a monthly income at retirement, you might consider a solo defined benefit (DB) plan. the monthly benefit is determined by a formula based on salary history and years of service. your contribution amount is not fixed--it is calculated each year by an actuary based on reasonable actuarial assumptions, and there is no upper limit. however, the annual maximum benefit you may receive at retirement is limited ($210,000 in 2015).

PROFESSORTOPRODUCER

Investing In a Commercial Cow/Calf Enterprise: Part II Too Expensive To Rebuild The U.S. Cow Herd? By Dr. Paul Walker, ISU Professor Emeritus | DI Walker Consulting

H

ow much profit do you expect to make from a commercial cow/calf operation? If cows are your full-time occupation and primary source of income, is $40,000, $50,000, $70,000 or $100,000/year your expected living wage? How much profit can you expect to make from each cow/calf unit each year – $200, $100, or $50 or less? If cows are a second, third or fourth source of income, how much do you expect each cow/calf unit to return? Are you a young, high school or university graduate wanting to start a cow/calf operation? How much money will be required to start the operation? Maybe the two scenarios described in this article will provide some insight into these questions. The first scenario uses a pasture and grass hay-based diet as the feed source. A hay diet is the standard for which to compare all other operations. Scenario 1 assumes the operator is starting from scratch and must buy or rent everything. This scenario is similar to the scenario described for starting a feedlot operation in the article titled “Time To Invest In a Cattle Feedlot.” Scenario 2 assumes the operator “has been around” for a time and owns the land, buildings, equipment and a cowherd. Scenario 2 describes the average cow/calf producer who is 57+ years old.

180 January/February 2015 • theshowcircuit.com

Assumptions for Scenario 1: 1. Land cost = $2,950/acre – that is the U.S. average for 2013 (In Illinois, the average cost per acre of land was $3,640 in 2006 and $7,700 in 2013.) Cost of land is a limiting factor to starting a cow- calf operation. 2. Cows will graze for six months and will receive a hay diet for six months, supplemented with soybean hulls for 90 days. 3. Grazing requires 2 acres/cow-calf unit. 4. Cull rate or heifer replacement rate is 12.5%: year. The average cow age at culling is 8 years old. 5. All calves except for replacement heifers are sold at weaning. 6. Calves are valued at $2.80: lb. and selling weight is 600 lbs. Calves are worth $1,680 x 90% calf crop saved = 1,512 x 87.5% (retaining 12.5% of the calves as replacements) = $1,323. 7. Cull cows weigh 1,400 lbs., bring $1.30: lb. and are valued at $1,820. 8. Cull bulls weigh 2,000 lbs bringing $1.60: lb. and are valued at $3,200. Each bull serves 25 cows: year and will breed for 8 years (optimistic). 9. Herd bulls cost $4,000 as two-year-olds. 10. To establish a herd, cows cost $3,000 as bred two-year-olds. It is interesting to note that at 4.0% interest and a cow replacement rate is 12.5%: per year, that the effective cow cost is $4,632 based on a purchase price of $3,000. 11. All equipment and buildings are charged on a pro-rated basis to each cow-calf unit. 12. Interest charge on land, building, equipment and cattle is 4.0%. Two buildings (one cow barn and concrete lot providing 83 sq. ft.: cow and one bull barn) are utilized costing $21: sq. ft. with capital recovery over 10 years. Minimum equipment is utilized and all equipment has a capital recovery period of 10 years based on a 200-head cowherd. Land is purchased with a 30-year capital recovery time. 13. Calf crop weaned as a percent of cows exposed to a bull for breeding in this scenario is 90%, which exceeds the national average of 80% by 10%.

What Does it Mean? Scenario 1 loses money at the rate of $481.46 per year for the first eight years of the enterprise, until the initial purchase of cows is paid in full. From year 8 until the equipment is paid off at the end of year 10, Scenario 1 can make $97.54 per year per cow/calf unit. From year 10 until the pasture land is paid in full, Scenario 1 can make $497.37 per cow/calf unit per year. In order to make a living wage solely from a commercial calf unit requires 100 to 200 cows at $497.37 per cow calf unit ($49,737 to $99,474 per year). Fifteen years ago when the net return per cow-calf unit was $50, the same 100 to 200 cows returned only $5,000 to $10,000 per year. Producers with 30 to 50 cows simply could not justify the labor required to earn so few dollars and, therefore, exited the business. In comparison, Scenario 2, makes $838.27 per cow/calf

unit per year. Those producers who “hung-on” during the “lean” years are now realizing previously unheard of profits. These two scenarios demonstrate why so few young people are entering the commercial cow-calf industry. They simply do not have the capital to purchase cows, land and equipment. And, it is important to note the cost in these scenarios do not include labor, utilities, nor fence (fence that is 54 inch high woven wire with one strand of barb wire and labor to install it costs $9,000 per mile). These scenarios imply that young people must either inherit or marry a cow/calf enterprise, or older cow/calf owners must be willing to financially help young people get started. There is money that can be made in the commercial cow/ calf industry. We must be innovative in helping young people get started if the cup is to remain half-full and rising.

No labor has been charged to the enterprise.

Ranch hoRse or

atv?

People often spread words in the same way they might paint a barn, with broad strokes. For example, we often hear or read declarations of the slow but sure decline in the use of saddle horses on modern ranching operations. Such statements generally include some mention of how the ranch horse is being replaced by the all-terrain vehicle (ATV). Some go so far as to claim it’s only a matter of time until performing ranch work on horseback becomes so rare it is considered an eccentricity.

By Troy SmiTh

on the other hand, there are plenty of ranch folk willing to argue the point. more than one equine-inclined rancher has said, “A four-wheeler can never replace a good horse, especially when working cattle.” The ATV advocate can present a fair argument that the motorized rigs are well-suited for many ranch chores. Let’s agree that an ATV can be mighty handy for checking cattle watering sites, fixing fence and monitoring forage utilization by grazing cattle. The operator can carry along an assortment of tools and other supplies and even pack salt and mineral. An ATV allows the operator to get around a pasture with some speed, to locate and look at cattle. its headlights are useful for night-checking the heifers during calving season. Equipped with one of those cage-like contraptions, an ATV can be used to corral

and tag a new calf, while affording the operator a measure of protection from an anxious mamma. often broadly stated is how an ATV allows the operator to save time when gathering and moving cattle. Some ATV aficionados claim they can have the cattle bunched and on the trail in the time it would take to catch and saddle a horse. This writer has seen that done, when the cattle were accustomed to that kind of handling and the ATV operator was experienced in stockmanship. Generally, a preference for the ATV is based on its convenience. The machine runs on gas and oil. When not in use, it doesn’t have to be fed. Assuming an ATV is well maintained, it starts with the turn of a key and performs the same way every time. it doesn’t get tired, balk or throw a fit. And the ATV offers speed. All of these factors contribute to convenience and that, when broadly stated, offers greater efficiency. Greater efficiency should then provide an economic advantage. Let’s look at the economics, while also presenting the horseman’s point of view. Starting with direct costs for an ATV versus a ranch horse, let’s consider a ride-astride utility ATV which is more maneuverable than the side-by-side style. A new model, equipped with four-wheel-drive and power steering will likely cost about $7,000. A bigger motor plus more bells and whistles can drive the price upward toward $12,000. The buyer of an experienced ranch horse can spend almost as much as he or she wants. A perusal of blog posts suggests that a gentle, well-broke ranch horse can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000. however, a good many useful ranch mounts trade for $3,000 or less. it depends on local availability and the individual horse. The savvy buyer looks for a horse whose disposition, training and experience matches the rider’s own horsemanship skill, as well as the kind of work to be done. The rancher who never intends to rope and doctor cattle in the pasture probably doesn’t require a horse capable of carrying a champion roper to the pay window. But if a high level of performance is desired, the cost will reflect the time and specialized training devoted to making that kind of horse. maintenance costs are difficult to compare. horses do eat every day. Feed isn’t

cheap, but costs associated with pasture and hay are highly variable. Prices for grain and other supplements also vary considerably, according to locality. Then there are the costs of health care, such as deworming and vaccinations. Cumulative cost will depend on the chosen health program. Saddles, bridles and other tack cost money too. how much usually depends on quality and whether the rider is focused primarily on function, or wants some bling to go with it. An ATV can be tricked out fancy too, but basic operation and maintenance costs include fuel and lubrication, plus the occasional replacement of tires, battery and other parts suffering from wear and tear. The total is highly variable, depending on the level of use and abuse. The same can be said for a horse and tack. What about depreciation cost? Generally, an ATV starts depreciating as soon as it leaves the dealer. A horse loses value too, if it becomes spoiled or unsound due to injury or age. however, a relatively young ranch horse that continues to gain on-the-job experience can actually increase in value. resold years later, to another rancher a family seeking a gentle kid’s horse, there is potential for a horse to fetch more than the original purchase price. As mentioned previously, an ATV can be an efficient tool for a variety of tasks. Whether it is most efficient for handling cattle depends upon the circumstances. Despite the name, it won’t traverse ALL types of terrain. When the going is really rough, a horse often has an advantage in more nearly covering a course “as the crow flies.” The rider also has the benefit of another set of eyes, as the horse will also spot deep holes or other dangers in the path ahead. At the same time, ol’ Dobbin may first spot that elusive stray cow. The direction of his gaze or the working of his ears can be a clue to the rider. There also are efficiencies associated with the higher vantage point of a rider on horseback. Able to see farther and view more cattle at one time, a rider may more readily spot individuals with health problems and read brands or ear tags more easily. A handler on horseback is more visible to more cattle too. The combined height of horse and rider is often more intimidating to cattle and that can be an advantage. The higher vantage point, along with the increased maneuverability of a horse causes many

low-stress stockmanship advocates to favor handling cattle from horseback. Capable and well-mounted cattle handlers can also use their superior vantage point and ability to maneuver in close quarters to efficiently sort cattle in a pen or alley. of course, working cattle from the back of a horse is not suited to everyone. Even people that like it may have physical limitations that make it impractical. For others, practicality is hindered because of their timestarved working environment. They also may lack the fondness for horseflesh that probably is required. Those producers probably are better off with an ATV. if they want to be good stockmen, practice low-stress handling methods and avoid over-doing the speed an ATV affords, they can accomplish great things. When things don’t go well, it is not because of the ATV and neither is it the fault of the horse. The cause is operator error. regardless of the handling tools and technology used, a stockman’s goal should be to keep getting better. Toward that end, some people favor a horse. i suspect it will be true for many years to come. most of these people also understand a previously unmentioned aspect of horse maintenance. horses need to be ridden often if they are to remain fit and fit for cow work. For some too-busy folk, that is a problem. other people, who may be just as busy, make time to ride. They generally agree with Winston Churchill, who opined, “No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle.”

Generally, a preference for the atv is based on its convenience. the machine runs on gas and oil. When not in use, it doesn’t have to be fed.

if this writer’s bias is not yet evident, another quote borrowed from Todd mcCartney should clarify. According to that Texas cattleman and low-stress cattle handling advocate, “A horse can teach you things that make you a better person. you don’t have to exercise patience with a four-wheeler; you don’t have to exercise courtesy or husbandry. All of those things are required for a horse, and all of those are good for the inside of a man.”

“The new SC Online Sales platform is awesome. I loved not always refreshing the page to see current bids, and the Watch List is great for buyers. Show Circuit did a great job promoting the sale. Over 75% of the lots we listed were sold by marketing alone. Definitely a great online sale experience!”

“All the new features are great like no refreshing and the Watch List, but one of my favorites as a seller is definitely the Sale Summary page after the sale. It allowed me to look at all my sale accounting 24/7 and get paid as the money came in. It was nice to have a hand in the finances after the close of the sale and know exactly where I stood.”

“By far my favorite feature was not having to refresh the sale page. As the seller, I know I am always on real-time during the sale and bidders always know if they are in or out because it is either green or red. We were the first SCO sale and honestly we were a little nervous, but we couldn’t have been happier and will definitely do it again.”

“I could not be more pleased with the success of our sale. Besides all the new stuff on the system, the service was second-to-none. From the time we booked our sale to the time we made the final close-out, everybody was great to work with. It was a great team effort and I thought it was a Home Run.”
