The deadline has passed for applying to the MCCA Board. Our new board will begin meeting and planning for the 2015 show season. We are fortunate to have three advisors to the board this year. Brianne Bishop and Taylor Loges are former MCCA members and board members who have chosen to continue supporting the youth in Missouri. We’re working through the rules and regulations this winter to clarify a few items. If you’re interested in hosting a points show or if you have a suggestion, please let one of us know and we’ll pass it on to the Board for a decision. I’m sure most of you have your calves and are excited about the coming show season. Remember that banners are won in the barn, not at the show. The time you put into your calf will pay off soon. ••• OKLAHOMA CLUB CALF ASSOCIATION ••• As I sit here enjoying another of the 11 days of awesome at the Tulsa State Fair, I look around at all the friends my family and I have made over the past several years. Watching the young people and the adults catch up on all that has happened in their lives over the past few months. Looking at each one’s calf or calves and wondering who will win supreme heifer this year. We have already made it through the steer show and would like to congratulate Lauren Bilderback on her Grand Champion Steer and Reserve Grand Champion Steer to Baylor Bonham. Seeing and watching everyone it almost reminds me of a great big family reunion, a big show family reunion. With one boy already gone and in college, his mother and I always look forward to seeing him at the shows when he is able to make there to help little brother. Being able to watch all of this brings me back to family and the holidays rapidly approaching. Enjoy the time you have with not just your family but also with your show family, because in a blink of an eye it will all be gone. I hope everyone had a great Tulsa fair with their show families and I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season with their families. Let us never forget the real reason why we do this. Finally in May of 2014, Battle of the Cattle was launched with a series of steer and heifer prospect shows across the state, open to all youth exhibitors from Texas and touching states. Battle of the Cattle hit the social media scene, using Facebook and Instagram to effectively reach their audience with a fresh, fun marketing approach. With career experience in marketing and event planning, Tonya tends to all the details of the show that help it feel like a “mini major” show. From the time you arrive, you are greeted by friendly and helpful volunteers. Tips from “Highly Productive People”
R
ecently while perusing the web, a blog headline caught my eye: “6 Subtle Things Highly Productive People Do Every Day.” Of course, I had to click and read. While Internet headlines are often deceiving, I have to admit this particular blog, written by business writer Eric Barker, shared some suggestions with merit.
He noted that even though most people think they are busy, there is often a lot of wasted and “unproductive” time in our day – we can probably thank smart phones and the Internet for a lot of that. So how do productive people get more done? Barker’s blog shared comments from Tim Ferriss, author of the international bestseller The 4-Hour Workweek. I grant from the get-go that Ferriss is not living the life of a farm or ranch family, however, he does share some strategies that are useful no matter what your profession. The first tip: Manage your mood. If you wake up and dive right in to phone calls, emails – and other fires to put out – you spend the whole day reacting. Ferriss points out that you’re not in the driver’s seat working on your priorities; you’re responding to what gets thrown at you – important or not. Instead, he advises if you start the day calm, it’s easy to get the right things done and focus. Specifically, Ferriss says, “I try to have the first 80 to 90 minutes of my day vary as little as possible. I think that a routine is necessary to feel in control and nonreactive, which reduces anxiety. It therefore makes you more productive.”

One of his biggest strategies is to avoid checking emails or other social media at the start of the day, so that he can plan and prioritize his own goals to pursue. Another reason for managing your mood: Research has shown you procrastinate more when you’re in a bad mood. Conversely, studies have demonstrated happiness increases productivity and leads to more success. The bottomline: think a little less about managing the work and a little more about managing your moods. Another “productivity” strategy shared was this: Before you try to do it faster, ask whether it should be done at all.” Ferriss suggests most people are spreading themselves too thin and doing too many things – many of which offer little or no return. He emphasizes that knowing your goals and having a plan are essential to help prioritize your projects and time management. Along with that, Ferriss says that having a daily routine to follow helps create a system for success. One important aspect in a routine should include setting your daily priorities the night before – and writing them down. Ferriss reports that studies have shown this has a secondary benefit: Writing down what you need to do tomorrow relieves anxiety and helps you enjoy your evening.

Make a plan for the entire week.
Barker says, “…the last thing this world needs is more short term thinking…You’ll never get ahead of the game by only looking at to day and never thinking about tomorrow.” He also shares that research backs this up: Research shows you spend your time more wisely when you follow a plan, and studies show writing things down makes you more likely to follow through.
Focus on the deep stuff.
All work is not created equal, points out Barker. Shallow work is little stuff like email, meetings, moving information around - things that are not really using your talents, he says. “Deep work pushes your current abilities to their limits. It produces high value results and improves your skills.” Thus, he suggests, “Do less and be amazing at those things.”

eterinary acupuncture and animal chiropractic are new and popular therapies in the veterinary medicine toolbox that can be utilized to help a majority of animal patients. This treatment can assist in alleviating muscle tension (“roaching backs�), arthritis pain, nerve
disorders, diseases caused by inflammation, digestive issues, and much more. Certified veterinarians (and Doctors of Chiropractic who are certified in Animal Chiropractic) are now able to offer their patients many alternative therapies that are safe and practically painless.
what is acupuncture? how are points chosen? what are the effects?
Traditional Chinese acupuncturists mapped the body and placed points (acupoints) in specific lines (meridians) that communicated with specific organs and diagrammed the flow of Qui (pronounced “Chi”). Qui is the flow of natural energy, or the essence of life, in a being. If an organ or the body’s Qui was dysfunctional in some way, an acupuncturist would feel tenderness or warmth along a certain meridian. An acupuncture needle would then be used along that line to affect the dysfunctional organ. Today, we know that traditional Chinese meridians correspond to nerves in the body and segments along the spinal cord. Western acupuncturists perform “neuromodulation,” or the intentional modification of the nervous system and internal organ function by stimulating specific nerves instead of moving Qui. Certain points can directly stimulate the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) or parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) aspects of the nervous system. Before treatment for an individual animal is decided upon, the veterinarian will require a thorough history of the animal’s situation and will then perform a comprehensive physical exam including palpation of muscles to look for abnormalities. Muscle trigger points are specific tight bands or nodules found in an individual muscle belly. These are similar to “knots” your massage therapist points out during a massage. Instead of kneading these trigger points; a fine, sterile acupuncture needle can be gently inserted to help release the tension. Additionally, needle placement helps to release anti-inflammatory chemicals and natural endorphins (the “feel good stuff”) locally and from the brain. When the right point or points are chosen, often patients will lower their heads and become very still. In some situations, an electrical stimulation device may be attached to the needles. These devices can have many desirable effects. For example, stimulation of the nerves at a lower electrical frequency has been shown to increase the duration of the treatment’s effects. This is similar to a TENS unit used in people, but it is not as powerful and is more comfortable for the patients.
apply a specific high velocity, low amplitude thrust through the joint’s normal range of motion to activate nervous system receptors and soft tissue structures. The body recognizes that this is a normal movement and should respond in an effort to start restoring this motion. This thrust is specific and not intended to move the joint past its anatomical barrier. If the joint is pushed beyond its unique anatomic limit, soft tissue damage is possible. There are many different variations in which chiropractic is performed: adjusting joints with the chiropractor’s hand or manipulation of joints with rubber hammers. I prefer to manually evaluate the quality of movement in each motion unit and apply adjustments by hand to prevent damage associated with treatment. Chiropractors start their exam by obtaining a history of the animal’s situation and will examine the animal standing and while at a walk or trot to evaluate symmetry in the musculoskeletal system. Next, joints and soft tissues are palpated for abnormalities, including swelling and heat. If there is a concern of disease or infection, the chiropractor will ask the owner to have the patient evaluated by their regular veterinarian. After this portion of the exam, the chiropractor will motion joints of the spinal column and depending on the species, motion the joints of the limbs (some species are more amenable to having their legs picked up!). When a subluxation complex is encountered, the chiropractor will make the appropriate adjustment. Depending on the animal’s particular situation, chiropractic re-examinations and adjustments will be repeated as necessary to achieve normal biomechanical function.
Integrative therapies in practice
In my current practice, livestock of many different species are evaluated for lameness issues. After a thorough history is obtained, a full lameness exam is often performed with assessment

The practice of chiropractic is similar to that of acupuncture in that the end goal is “homeostasis,” or return of the body to optimal health. Chiropractic focuses on structure and function: the performance of the nervous system and its effect on how the body is moving and performing as a whole. For chiropractors, knowledge of anatomy is vital. Abnormal anatomy leads to abnormal movement. Abnormal movement causes abnormal input to the nervous system. Finally and most importantly, abnormal nervous system input equals dysfunction in the efforts to return to homeostasis. The bones and soft tissue structures (muscles, tendons, and ligaments) that make up a joint have a normal range of motion in which they are able to move. Their structure defines their movement. However, when there is a dysfunction of the joint and associated soft tissues (aka, a “motion unit”), movement can either be restricted or in some cases, too mobile (ie, a luxated shoulder joint). Chiropractors are able to utilize their hands and body to evaluate the quality in which joints are moving. When a motion unit is restricted (aka, a “subluxation complex”), a chiropractor will

of the animal while stationary and at a walk/trot, examination of the hooves/toes, and advanced diagnostics are considered (radiographs, ultrasound, “blocking” or temporarily deadening of joints or nerves with lidocaine). Occasionally, I will encounter a patient with what appears to be a hind-end lameness, but will actually be painful to palpation of the back. Often times, multiple areas throughout the back are painful to palpation and trigger points are readily palpable. Additionally, several vertebral subluxation complexes are usually discovered. When an animal is lame, they often shift weight to another leg. This can cause secondary orthopedic abnormalities. The areas of the body that are compensating are unusually stressed and experience increased inflammation. These areas may not respond to conventional anti-inflammatories like “Banamine” or “Previcox”. Chronic use of anti-inflammatories can have detrimental effects on the body, especially kidney function, and are contraindicated in food-producing animals. Even after the lameness is resolved, back pain may persist due to trigger point formation or persistence of subluxation complexes. Once a diagnosis is made, I will discuss all available treatment options, both traditional and integrative. If chiropractic care is appropriate, adjustments are performed and post-treatment care and rehabilitation plans are outlined. If acupuncture is chosen (or a combination of both acupuncture and chiropractic), I will palpate the specific trigger points and place needles directly into each point and other areas as dictated by the disease process. After needles are placed, electrical stimulation unit leads are applied to certain needles. The unit is turned on at a low frequency and comfort level of the patient is closely monitored. At times, the stimulation will cause the muscles to bounce gently as tension is relieved. If the patient is uncomfortable, the frequency or current will be decreased. However, some bovine patients will chew their cud and horses may drool and drop their heads.

I was recently presented with a case of a young show steer that had a traumatic incident two weeks prior (he had a violently collided with a fence after being spooked). Afterwards, the calf exhibited severe neurological trauma signs: laying on his side, abnormal eye movement, and inability to rise on his own. He was nursed very carefully and diligently by his owner and referring veterinarian. For several days after, the calf eventually stood but was stumbling and appeared to not understand where he was placing his feet. While these clinical signs eventually began to resolve with conventional anti-inflammatories, the calf was still very stiff in the neck area. The client was interested in alternative therapy (whether acupuncture or chiropractic adjustment) to treat this neck soreness. Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient was observed at a walk. Foot placement was found to be appropriate. There was a slight asymmetry of his neck muscles and he resisted any flexion of his neck in a “yes/no” motion. He was painful to palpation of his neck muscles. Nerve functions (cranial nerves) were found to be intact. His rectal temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate were elevated. Due to his history of trauma and painful/stiff neck, it was decided that radiographs of his cervical (neck) vertebrae were necessary. Radiographs revealed several fractures. The most shocking was of the front and top portions of his second cervical vertebrae, which caused his spinal cord to be mildly maligned. He also had a fractured portion of the bottom of his skull, called the basisphenoid/basioccipital bone. This is a portion of the skull that is commonly fractured in horses when they rear up and cause trauma to the back of the head. The fractured portions of the bone were beginning to show signs of healing with a callous (scar) formation. These type of fractures pose a risk to the spinal cord and have the potential to cause severe neurological signs (stumbling, loss of balance perception, etc.). These fractures can be life-threatening and are a concern for future use of this calf. The patient was placed on stall confinement and made to access feed from a raised bunk, to prevent undue stress to his neck and spinal cord. He has received intermittent acupuncture treatments to decrease muscle tension and provide relief to trigger points. Additionally, he has had chiropractic adjustments in areas of the spinal column not in close proximity to his fractured vertebra.

Several months after his diagnosis and implementation of integrative care, follow-up radiographs found excellent bony scar tissue formation along the fractured pieces of bone. The calf’s range of motion of his cervical vertebra was vastly improved and the calf did not exhibit any neurological abnormalities. The calf was released to begin gentle halter breaking and light exercise. He will receive maintenance integrative care until he is shown in the spring. This case is an excellent example of obtaining a diagnosis before pursuing treatment. If alternative therapies were pursued (for example, a chiropractic adjustment of the neck region) without knowledge of the radiographic diagnosis, this patient’s condition may have gone from bad to worse (or even fatal). As stated, a veterinarian will use all of their resources to determine the animal’s diagnosis and use their judgment to plan a protocol that may include integrative therapies. Acupuncture and chiropractic are not intended to replace a regular exam and conventional treatment by a licensed veterinarian. In skilled hands, acupuncture and chiropractic care can achieve rapid and rewarding results while maintaining the health and safety of the patient. I would also like to specialize and go into embryology as well. What quality/skill do you have that you’re most proud of? When you go back in for champion your heart is pounding and your hands are shaking. You can’t even think straight. The judge comes over and picks you. All the work, time, and effort you put into your animal is all worth it when you win. That is the best feeling in the world. Least favorite show day task: My least favorite show day task is washing. I wish the animals would stay clean so you don’t have to wash them the morning of the show. Most embarrassing stock show moment: When your uncle gets your heifer all mad before you show. Then you get ready to go into the show ring and he says “ Don’t mess with her at all. As long as she stands still I don’t care if she looks bad.” Later on I found out that she tried to kill him on the way the the show ring.

ajca Memories from the arkansas State Fair by: Allyson Morrison, AJCA AreA 8 - ViCe President The 75th Arkansas State Fair is now in the books. We experienced another was a great year of exhibiting our cattle, seeing old friends and making new friends while we were in Little Rock. It is always fun to see all my show friends succeeding at the state level. This year’s Arkansas State Fair was a very special one for my family. My sister, Mackenzie Morrison, won the Grand Champion Market Steer with “Boa Boa.” My steer “Mighty Whitey” was selected as Champion Steer in Division 1 was selected as the 3rd steer in the premium sale. This was the first time I had ever shown a steer at the Arkansas State Fair and the second time ever showing a steer. It was a great feeling to get to share the moment with my sister and all my other FFA, 4-H, and Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association friends. I am very proud of my sister Mackenzie for her big accomplishment. My mom and dad have always told us if you put the time and work in it will pay off at the end. Getting up early all summer at 4 a.m. with Mackenzie to rinse and dry our steers and heifers before putting them in the cooler was not always fun. But Mackenzie and I did it anyway. The early mornings and late nights at the barn did pay off in the end. Mom and dad have always told us to be happy with how we placed even if we don’t win champion because there is always someone who wished they placed where we did. Mackenzie and “Boa Boa’s” last show will be in Louisville, Kentucky, at the North American International Livestock Exposition in November. We want to wish everyone exhibiting cattle at this show the best of luck.

thanksgiving classic - barn bash 2014 by: blAire Wildy, AJCA President eleCt As we enter fall, we automatically look forward to hoodies, bonfires, hot chocolate and hay rides. That is, unless you’re a stock show kid. We are all looking forward to kicking off this show season with our annual Thanksgiving Classic Barn Bash 2014. The dust hasn’t even settled from our state fair, but a lot of us are picking out and getting ready to get started with our new animals. The Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Thanksgiving Classic is the showcase for a lot of new calves. This show will be the first time a lot of these calves see the show ring. It always makes for a fun exciting weekend. For the first time ever, this show will be held in the Northeast corner of the state. This starts a new tradition of rotating the show to different parts of the state each year. This year’s show will be held at the Northeast Arkansas District Fairgrounds and Expo Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas. We will begin with showmanship on Friday late afternoon, Nov. 28th, followed by our social, annual meeting and officer elections that night at the Hilton Garden Inn. Saturday morning, Nov. 29th will be the show. Be watching AJCA’s website for more information on the show and the host hotel. Hope to see everyone Thanksgiving weekend at the Barn Bash 2014. Another show will follow that very next weekend in Russellville December 6th. To receive your AJCA points your membership will need to be paid prior to your first show of the new show year. 2014-15 Membership applications are on the AJCA website at www.ajcattle.com. In my next column (Part Two) I will provide a general economic analysis for a commercial cow-calf enterprise. It will be interesting to see if I make any money.
fter reading my article titled “Investing in a Cattle Feedlot” Alan Adams, President of the Illinois Beef Association, asked if I could put together similar figures for starting a cow-calf operation for a future column. Back when I taught AGR378 Beef Cow-Calf Management and AGR275 Feedlot Management, the students, as a culminating exercise, always had to prepare a cow-calf management plan and a feedlot management plan for each class, respectively. In addition to appropriate narrative describing the enterprise, each plan had to include cash flow, income, expense and profit-loss statements. These plans were designed as semester long assignments though some students tried to put a plan together in two or three days and you can guess the grade the “overnight” plans received. The point is a good cow-calf management plan takes a lot of thought and expertise to develop, more so than a feedlot management plan, partly because there are so many possible types of operations. Before I outline an economic analysis for a commercial cow-calf enterprise, I thought I should review the reasons why people maintain cow-calf operations. In the 40 years since 1975 commercial cow-calf producers have made a profit in only 28 years (or 70% of the time). Therefore, there must be other reasons why people choose to own cows. So what are the reasons?

Every well-intentioned Beef Cow-Calf Management instructor on the second and third day of class will outline the advantages and disadvantages for investing in a cow-calf enterprise. I always provided seven advantages: 1. More pounds of product produced per acre of land (particularly low quality grass land). 2. Less speculative operation (when compared to a feedlot operation). 3. Very stabile enterprise – a cow/calf operation will last a lifetime. 4. There is great variety in the type of cattle that can be utilized to produce a variety of outcomes. 5. A cow/calf operation can make use of equipment and labor already available that may be underutilized. 6. Overtime, if wise decisions are made, a cow herd will increase in value (sometimes, like right-now, the choices made do not matter, cows just have increased value.) 7. Raising cattle can be satisfying. (I know a lot of people who maintain a cow-calf operation because they just like cows- like me, for instance). There are, of course, a least six disadvantages for having a cow-calf operation and overtime (from 1975 to today) one or more disadvantages have outweighed all the advantages for numerous cow-calf producers. That is why we have fewer producers and fewer cows today than any
time since the 1950’s. Many of the advantages I listed are, also, disadvantages for maintaining a cow-calf enterprise.
1. People like the cow-calf business. They just like cows. If you don’t like cows, you don’t belong in the cow-calf business.

2. People have available land that will not be productive unless it is pasture.
1. While a cow-calf operation is a stabile enterprise and can last a lifetime, it is a long-term program. Buying a heifer calf to develop into a beef cow requires 24 months before there is any product (a weaned calf) to sell.
3. There are other roughages (such as cornstalks, citrus, vegetable by-products, it is a long list) available that can be utilized only by cows.
2. A beef cow-calf enterprise is an inflexible program. An entrepreneur cannot jump into and jump out of a cow-calf program and expect to make a profit. A cowcalf operation requires commitment and dedication to purpose over a long time. Maybe this is why show heifers make such good junior projects; they teach dedication to purpose and commitment to follow through, among other things.
4. Labor is available. A cow-calf program can be designed around other off-farm or on-farm enterprises to make use of available labor (one can wash and wax the combine only so many times between November and August).
3. A cow-calf operation requires a higher level of management and more labor than a feedlot operation and certainly more of both than a grain operation. Cows don’t really require a lot of help in June grazing grass but come February, someone has to thaw water fountains and put out hay even if it is zero and the snow is blowing.
6. Cattle are adaptable to any climate. There is a breed for everyone and for every environment.
4. Greater losses (both production and economic) can be expected if management is marginal. A cow only has a chance for one calf per year. No calf – no income. The average percent calf crop weaned per cow exposed to breeding each year is around 80% (calculated from USDA statistics). It is difficult to make a profit when only 80% of the product is saved. 5. Beef cows are inefficient. It takes more pounds of energy to produce a pound of product for beef cattle than it does for swine or poultry. However, there is a caveat as ruminants are the salvation to the world food crisis. As long as we feed cows forage and food by-products, cows can consume energy/protein not directly consumable by humans and turn it into high quality protein required by humans. Cows can be a direct link between humans and inedible energy sources. 6. A cow-calf enterprise requires a large economic investment and capital (credit) is difficult to obtain to finance a cow-calf operation (especially for beginning producers) because of the long payback period required. So why do people invest in a cow-calf program? I can list at least 10 reasons, but the first one is the overriding factor – I think it is a pre-requisite to owing cows.
5. Equipment and unused buildings are available that otherwise will set idle.
7. Because of innovation there are market niches (local food, organically raised, etc.) that can result in increased profitability. 8. Some folks actually have the financial resources to invest in a cow-calf operation. There are seed stock operations that have provided a 10% or greater return on investment. 9. Year in and year out cow/calf returns have exceeded cattle feeding returns. While cow/calf operations lost money 30% of the time in the last 40 years, feedlot enterprises lost money in 55% of the years (source=Livestock Marketing Information Center). 10. And, people have knowledge and skill to successfully manage a cow-calf operation. Maybe they had a hand-full of courses in nutrition, breeding and cowcalf management taught by Dr. Walker and they know enough to be dangerous.
