Surf Doggy

By Sandra Zunino While some dogs are content to play fetch or even go for the occasional swim, Buddy, a purebred Bijon Frise from Stevensville, prefers to hang 20 with his owner on his surfboard.

Kathleen “Katie� Baker adopted Buddy about two years ago from a schoolteacher in Chestertown. “She couldn’t find a place to live that accepted dogs, so she had to Kathleen Baker and Buddy, a regular put him up for adoption.� Only surf dog. four months old when he came to Katie, Buddy was completely untrained.

Katie began housebreaking and training him right away. Having grown up on a farm and maintaining pets throughout her life, she was able to connect with the Bijon’s willing tendencies. “They are wonderful pets and are very devoted to their owners,� says Katie. “He brings great joy into my life.�

Although Katie had never had a Bijon Frise before, she had researched the expensive breed’s characteristics and scouted the local papers for a while seeking a dog she could afford. Tiny, white fluffy pups, the Bijon’s are noted for intelligence, affection and happy temperament. They are easily trainable and enjoy being around people.

Buddy not only gets along well with Katie’s two cats, Boo Boo and Nacho, he’s a favorite among the residents and students at the Chesterwye Center, Inc., where Katie works, often with Buddy at her side. “He is extremely calm and friendly,� says Katie. “They just love him.�

While Bijon’s are known for their hypoallergenic coats, making them popular pets for allergy sufferers, they are not renowned for their love of water, making Buddy all the more unique. “I live on Kent Island on the water, so I would take him out for walks and he would play in the water,� says Katie, “so one day I brought a surfboard out and he jumped on.�

Almost immediately, the 24-pound canine gravitated to the surfboard. “He will jump off the surfboard, swim around in the water and then jump back on the board,� says Katie. “He’ll stay on the board until we come in.�

Katie holds the board steady so Buddy can climb on, but says he will sit on the board without assistance. “People come to watch him,� says Katie. �They will drive by and turn around just to watch. Often people will come down to the beach and ask if they can take pictures.�

Katie says spectators often ask her if she is sure Buddy is not a Labrador. “Little dogs generally don’t go in the water,� she says.

According to Katie, her and Buddy’s next adventure will be kayaking. “I have a kayak, but we haven’t used it yet,� she says. “He will probably be sitting in either my lap or the supply spot.�

Katie says if Buddy does take to kayaking, she will put a floatation device on him to keep him safe.

While Buddy’s favorite surfing hangout is the beach at Kent Island Estates, he also enjoys going for a walk at the Kent Island Dog Park and soon, he will have a date with his new girlfriend. Already bred once, Buddy has sired four puppies that were homed to family and friends last spring. “I promised him last year he would have a date for Valentine’s Day,� Katie laughs. “In six months we will try to breed him again.�

NEWS FROM “THE TOWN”: AM 1530 and FM 102.3, WCTR - NEW GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT ATHLETES The state Department of Education is handing out guides to help local school systems implement concussion awareness programs for student athletes. The publication highlights the nature and risk of a concussion, the criteria for being taken out of competition and return to play, and the risk of not reporting an injury. Added to the procedures this year is a state-mandated requirement that parents and their student athletes sign-off after receiving concussion information. Youth sports groups using public school facilities also will be held to the new guidelines.

Soil tests usually cost $13.00. However, in an effort to encourage Bay-Wise friendly landscape practices, the Corsica River Conservancy in cooperation with the University of Maryland Extension-Queen Anne’s County are sponsoring FREE soil testing to the first 50 Corsica River watershed residents that apply between September 12 – 26.

To take advantage of this offer, visit the University of Maryland Extension Office in Queen Anne’s County at 505 Railroad Ave in Centreville, MD and ask for Rachel Melvin, UME-Queen Anne’s County Horticulture Educator. You will be provided a free soil testing kit and instructions on taking your soil sample. University of Maryland Extension will also have a booth at Corsica River Awareness Day on Saturday 17 where they will provide free soil test kits and instructions (Just look for the Terps tent).

Lighthouse Christian Academy Begins Second Decade with the Appointment of New Administrator Lighthouse Christian Academy is celebrating the commencement of its second decade of classical Christian education with the appointment of a new school administrator. Mrs. Linda Whiting, former administrator of the Severn Run Classical Christian Homeschool Academy, has accepted the position of LCA Administrator effective immediately. Mrs. Whiting has lived on Kent Island for nearly thirty years. She has been a history teacher at the Severn Run Homeschool Academy since 1998, as well as school administrator since 2007. Her additional teaching experience includes camp director at the Annapolis Area Christian School, instructor at the Kids on Campus Program at Chesapeake College, and Director of Children’s Christian Education at Safe Harbor Church. The parents and students of Lighthouse Christian Academy are excited to welcome her to their school.

Mrs. Whiting is leading the Lighthouse Christian Academy family in celebrating its 10th anniversary this year! LCA began through the sponsorship and leadership of four area churches: Safe Harbor Presbyterian, Wye Bible, Chesapeake Church of Christ, and LCA’s home, Island Alliance. Lighthouse Christian Academy is an interdenominational K-12 Christian school utilizing a joyful Classical approach that enables its students to reason and articulate

with clarity, creativity, and conviction. Classical education cultivates thinking, eloquent students who are able to develop facts into logical arguments and to convey those arguments clearly and persuasively. LCA’s drama department puts on an annual play that involves students throughout the school (“Cheaper by the Dozen” was most recently presented). And the highlight of the year is a History Festival, in which the students present creative performances based on that period of history which they have studied throughout the year. Additionally, LCA’s curriculum is carefully matched with a variety of creative, memorable field trips that enhance and broaden the students’ understanding of their classroom studies.

Wet & Wild Auction to Benefit Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center Every year over 15,000 students come to Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC) to learn about the Bay and environmental stewardship. To continue this educational mission, CBEC needs the support of the community for its 7th Annual Wet & Wild Live and Silent Auction fundraiser on Saturday, September 24, from 4 to 8 pm in CBEC’s Education and Arts Building in Grasonville.

Tickets for the event are $75/person, which includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, beer, and wine. CLARIFICATION ON OVERTIME PAY FOR KENT COUNTY DEPUTIES Kent County Sheriff John F. Price, IV sought clarity from the Kent County Commissioners on overtime paid to deputies for private events in the county and who should pay the cost of overtime. Price said for-profit events are taxing the KC Sherriff’s Department. Price said he discussed options with Kent County Human Resources Director S. Martin Marty Hale, who conducted research of how other counties deal with overtime for special events.

News In Brief Brought to You By YOUR INFORMATION STATION MINISTERS AGAINST SLOT MACHINES AT ROSECROFT Three dozen ministers say they plan to fight against adding slot machines or table games at Rosecroft Raceway in Prince George’s County. The Washington Post reports the ministers and other members of the Collective Empowerment Group sent a letter to Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley opposing additional gaming in the county. The group has worked to expand economic opportunities for its membership, which it says includes 150 churches. The letter comes as Penn National Gaming Inc., Rosecroft’s new owner, plans to reopen for simulcasting. The company said that live racing will resume on October 21.

MARYLAND TO REINTRODUCE ELK? Maryland officials are looking at the feasibility of reintroducing elk to the state after a 300-year-absence. The Department of Natural Resources announced that it is working with the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen’s Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to review options. The study is expected to take 12 months and will gauge public opinion toward the move.

O’MALLEY TO INDIA? Governor Martin O’Malley says he wants to go to India this year in what would be his second international trade mission of 2011. O’Malley went to China, South Korea, and Vietnam back in June to promote trade and businesses here in Maryland. He says some $85-million in deals were made as a result. The trip to India is still in the planning stages, but O’Malley says the focus will be on jobs. He mentioned the trip during a recent visit to Montgomery College.

INFANT MORTALITY AT LOWEST LEVEL State officials announced the infant mortality rate has dropped to the lowest level on record. The Baltimore Sun reports the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s numbers show a dip to about seven deaths for every 1,000 live births last year, a drop of seven-percent from the year before. Officials credit a three-year campaign to reduce infant deaths as helping to put a dent in the problem.

TAX DOLLARS AT WORK Federal funds will help protect endangered Puritan tiger beetles living in cliffs overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. The $2.4-million grant was announced last week. Maryland is home to the largest remaining population in the world of the small, bronzecolored insect with blue and white markings.

Commissioner Pickrum raised a question about discerning between governmental functions and private events. Susan Hayman thought that the company running the event was paying for security. Discussion between the Commissioners, Hayman, Price and Hale sought to narrow down a policy for reimbursement to the Sherriff’s Office based on rates similar to what other counties charge for private events. Commissioner Ron Fithian asked Price to write a policy and bring it back to the Council for approval.

Price said he hopes to get time-and-a-half for his deputies by adding a line item on their time sheets for private events. Price reaffirmed the KC Sherriff’s Department commitment for community events but said something should be done to prevent his department from becoming a private security force for business enterprises.

MIKE FLANAGAN DEAD: APPARENT SUICIDE Mike Flanagan, the 59-year-old former Orioles pitching great and team general manager, was found near his Baltimore County home. Published reports say Flanagan took his own life, despondent over feeling he was not good enough as a baseball executive and felt responsible for the team’s failures in recent years.

Flanagan is a member of the Orioles Hall of Fame. He pitched 15 of his 18 Major League seasons with the Orioles and won the Cy Young Award as the American League’s top pitcher in 1979. Flanagan also worked as an Orioles pitching coach, general manager and was working as a game analyst on MASN this season. Flanagan is survived by his wife Alex and three daughters, Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall.

Holek told us that because of Hurricane Irene, the store was forced to close at 2pm on Saturday, as did many of the other stores in the Outlets. Upon reopening, he did have some disappointed customers, because some of their stock of bananas, and other items had to be thrown out due to loss of power.

The power at the business did not go out, and Ann told us that they did close one hour early over the weekend so that their employees could get home safely. They have been in business for 25 years, and Ann seems pleased that Irene did not pack as much of a punch as was forecasted.

· Have a telephone with a cord or cell phone to use as a backup. Cordless telephones require electricity to operate, and will not work if there is an outage. · Protect your electronic equipment. Unplug sensitive electronics or plug computers and other sensitive equipment into surge suppressors, and consider a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for temporary battery backup power. · Turn off power to flood-prone basement appliances if it is safe to do so; however, if you have an electrically-operated sump pump, you should not turn off your power.

Rick Leonard, Manager of Edward’s Pharmacy in Centreville Rick said he sold out of all hurricane supplies (batteries, etc.) and he did have many sandbags in place before Irene came. Edward’s had power return on Sunday morning, and no water entered the building.

He thought his staff of approximately 15 employees did a superb job in preparation for the storm.

He also added that it seemed that many people were more aware of Irene, and that common sense prevailed. He considers himself and his Edward’s team very blessed.

EVACUATING OCEAN CITY–NECESSARY BUT EXPENSIVE The evacuation of Ocean City ahead of Hurricane Irene cost the state of Maryland an estimated $2-million in potential income.

State Comptroller Peter Franchot says most of that was in lost sales tax money because folks stayed home. Other lost revenue was in the form of gas tax receipts, Bay Bridge toll fees, payroll withholdings and admissions and amusement tax receipts to Ocean City. Franchot said that given the disastrous impact of the storm on other parts of our country, he is grateful that Ocean City and the state of Maryland as a whole weathered the storm with minimal injury or loss of life.

POST IRENE DEATH TOLL TWO IN MARYLAND Two Maryland residents are dead because of Hurricane Irene. Officials say carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator killed Won Koo Sung in Howard County while his wife, Young Sin Sung and son Jason were in critical condition at a hospital. Authorities say a woman died in Queenstown after a big tree knocked a chimney through the roof of her Queen Anne’s County home.

IRENE DAMAGES IDENTIFIED Hurricane Irene is being blamed for the deaths of more than 30,000 chickens in Maryland. Maryland Agriculture Secretary Earl Hance said that despite the poultry losses, overall Maryland livestock fared well with no significant loss. Hance also said high winds and excessive rain caused the remaining sweet corn crop to be blown over, but he added the effect would be small as most had already been harvested.

(ARA) - Plenty of tender, loving care went into those vegetable seedlings planted this spring. Weeks of watering, weeding, pruning and feeding have likely resulted in a harvest so bountiful, it is beginning to overwhelm the kitchen.

So what can be done with the garden leftovers? Donating and gifting are two great ways to help friends and the community with fresh produce.
