NEVER TOO YOUNG TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE A life best lived is one that includes service to others. Thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Arentz is taking this message to heart and is working to raise awareness about breast cancer among her peers. Elizabeth, a ninth grader at Kent Island High School, just joined the Bosom Buddies Charities 2012 Ball Committee as a junior member. Elizabeth is choosing the Bosom Buddies Charities to honor her grandmother and aunt who are breast cancer survivors. She understands that knowledge is the key to promoting awareness and looks forward to bringing this message to local schools. Bosom Buddies wants to make their website user friendly and meaningful for all ages, and Elizabeth is just the person to help them. She will work with other committee members using her internet skills and familiarity with social networking to assist in this process. In addition to working on the website Elizabeth will be involved in video publicity and creating a working data base. Elizabeth is a great role model for our schools and community. She is a very athletic and talented young lady with a huge heart. She plays travel softball for Shore Attitude, and this year the team made it to Nationals. She also plays soccer for Junior Varsity and enjoys basketball and other sports. Elizabeth’s talents extend to supporting various community organizations that include the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center, Hospice of Queen Anne’s and the Animal Resource Foundation. The committee is grateful to have Elizabeth’s commitment in the ďƒžght against breast cancer. The committee members also are excited to have other great women join the group: Gail Kalvaitis, owner of Club One; Paula Warner, owner of Paula’s Fine Jewelry; and, Michelina Scotto, owner of Rustico’s Restaurant. A tremendous source of pride for Bosom Buddies is the support they receive from the residents and businesses of Queen Anne’s County.

Bosom Buddies Charities, Inc. is a local non-proďƒžt 501Š(3) charity founded in 2006 by Susan Ponchock of Stevensville and a group of close friends to promote breast cancer awareness, encourage early detection, support treatment and celebrate healing. Their primary fundraiser is the annual Bosom Buddies Ball, and the 6th event will be held on January 21, 2012 at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club in Stevensville. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Elizabeth and the members of Bosom Buddies encourage everyone to visit their web site at www. bosombuddiescharities.com for more information on the important work this group is doing in our community.

News In Brief

Brought to You By

YOUR INFORMATION STATION O’MALLEY TALKS REDISTRICTING Governor O’Malley met with a pair of congressmen from Maryland to discuss redistricting. Both Democrat Chris Van Hollen and Republican Roscoe Bartlett apparently asked the governor to make “substantial” changes to the map proposed this week by O’Malley’s redistricting committee. The map proposes to add more Democrats into Bartlett’s district with some calling that a transparent effort to ip Bartlett’s Republican-leaning district into a Democratic one. In turn, Van Hollen’s district would gain more Republican voters. Bartlett also warned the changes could spawn a lawsuit over minority representation, noting that Maryland’s biggest Hispanic community would be split up into two districts, while Baltimore City would continue to be divided into three districts. SECOND HOME INVASION SUSPECT PLEADS GUILTY The second of two men charged with a January 25 home invasion in Church Hill has pleaded guilty in circuit court. Nathan Montgomery Jr., 38 and formerly of Rock Hall, entered a guilty plea on October 4 to charges in connection with the invasion of a home on Lieby Road. Montgomery was charged with being an accomplice to Ade Yemi Scott, 41of Millington, who was found guilty of several charges in a September 12 bench trial. According to the Queen Anne’s County State’s Attorney’s ofce, the two barged into a home displaying handguns and demanding drugs and money. The residents, two adult females and an infant, could not comply, but prosecutors say Scott and Montgomery ransacked the home and took personal items before leaving. Both Scott and Montgomery, who ed the scene in a white Nissan Armada, were apprehended in Delaware with the help of Maryland State Police. ROCK HALL CLOSE TO APPROVING PRAYER AT TOWN COUNCIL MEETINGS Rock Hall Mayor Bob Willis and the Town Council agreed to language on a resolution that will hopefully settle the issue of prayer at council meetings and other local government functions in Rock Hall, according to Willis. The resolution will continue to allow prayer at the onset of every meeting, inviting clergy from different faiths to lead the prayer. Willis said the resolution will not ask clergy members to change the way they deliver their prayers. “We are not going to censor prayers from any clergy’s faith,” Willis said. “But we are going to ask them to be mindful of other faiths when they deliver the prayer.” Willis said there was an outburst from an audience member on the nancial cost of deciding the issue, which caused him to take the matter into closed session. Willis said if no clergy is present at the meeting, Council Member Susan Francis or Olin “Butch” Price have volunteered to lead the prayer. Gren Whitman, who raised the issue in June on Constitutional grounds, said the resolution is a “big step in the right direction” but would not elaborate until the resolution had passed. SUICIDE CRISIS CALLS UP Crisis counselors say the number of calls to Maryland suicide prevention hotlines has gone way up in the last few years. A good deal of that is said to be tough economic times, which starts a chain reaction including no work and failed marriages. MARCHING BAND TO THE ORANGE BOWL Congratulations to the Kent County High School Marching Band. They have been asked to play in the 2013 Orange Bowl. Fundraising is starting in order to cover the $600 average cost per band member to attend. If you are interested in helping, call the high school to nd out how you can support the band.

DECISION ON WIND FARM Maryland may nd out shortly whether it gets permission to develop a wind farm off the coast of Ocean City. Delaware also is in the running for a lease. Maryland hosted a windenergy forum, and the fed are expected to make an announcement very soon. CAUSE OF CHESTERTOWN FIRE Investigators say it was a smoldering cigarette that caused the early September re at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown. Damage was estimated at $75,000. The early-morning blaze started in the stairway leading to a second-oor apartment. The woman living there managed to get out safely after a friend called her and told her to get out. The re marshal’s ofce says the sprinkler system was a big factor in keeping damages down. TRIAL DATE SET A February date is set for the murder trial of Leroy Wilson. He is charged with murdering Lindsey Crispino last April. Crispino was from Denton, and her body was found near a property outside Centreville. Wilson ed the area, supposedly in Crispino’s car, but was arrested after he crashed a sobriety checkpoint in Mississippi. State’s Attorney Lance Richardson says DNA evidence is crucial in this case and he has asked for as much time as possible. NEW AREA CODE FOR MARYLAND The Maryland Public Service Commission says that area code 667 will be used starting March 24th for those requesting new service. It will be assigned to all or parts of the following areas in Maryland beginning in March: Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Calvert County, Caroline County, Carroll County, Cecil County, Dorchester County, Harford County, Howard County, Kent County, Queen Anne’s County, Somerset County, Talbot County, Wicomico County and Worcester County. The last implementation of a new area code was in 1997 with the addition of 240 and 443.

Question of the Week: We put our home up for sale and the square footage is way off! Is our attached garage considered in the square footage? Although a garage is attached to the home, it is not considered part of the home’s square footage. That is because only livable space is considered in the square footage calculation. When a home’s square footage is advertised, the gure usually comes from previous sales, perhaps as far back as the builder. It is best to rely on a licensed appraiser to recalculate the square footage of a house.
