Event Planning Tip of the Week – Decorations…Not Just For Looks Some common decorations are owers, balloons, table linens and centerpieces. Adding a twist to these decorations is what will set your event apart. Remember that decorations aren’t always used just for looks. Balloons at an auction bring festivity and color to your event, while marking a section that guests need to spot easily. Decorative name cards at a wedding tell guests where to sit, but also serve as decorations on the tables. Flowers at a bridal shower will make the space look beautiful, and can also serve as gifts for the guests. Table linens and centerpieces at a food tasting enhance the event’s theme, but can also mark the location of different food stations. For more advice, go to www.InspiredEventsllc.com or nd us on facebook.

“Hello Angels!

The chatter and laughter of friends gathered in a home in Chester was broken by the greeting of “Hello Angels!â€? No, the response wasn’t “Hello Charlie!â€? because this story isn’t about three little girls who went to the Police Academy. This is the story of Angels right here on Kent Island. The Cancer Comfort Angels. Presently, the Angels are organizing a walk and dinner to be held on Sunday, October 30th to raise funds for both research and for the “Comfort Kitsâ€? they provide. Each kit includes a homemade blanket (for comfort), a cross (for support) and words of prayer (for encouragement). In 2008, founder Laurie Rasinski was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Early on, she received a homemade blanket from a young family friend and was inspired to pass on that act of comfort and kindness to others who need love and support during their journey with cancer. “We’re really excited about this walk which will start at Love Point Park and followed by a dinner at Kentmorr Restaurant with a Silent Auction,â€? Laurie explains. “This committee of dynamic friends is so impressive. It’s amazing to watch it all come together!â€? So far, committee member Sue Baxter has been able to line up donations from the business community such as jewelry from Paula’s Fine Jewelry, certiďƒžcates from several local restaurants, rounds of golf from Prospect Bay Country Club and a real favorite amongst these friends, “Pies by Pajak! Toni Pajak has agreed to bake one pie a month for six months for the highest bidder!â€? announced Sue. Committee member, Connie Beasley, has been busy working with local business, Chesapeake Graphics, to come up with many items that will be for sale during the walk and at the dinner. According to Connie, “We have ďƒ&#x;eece vests, stickers for your car, bandanas, and of course t-shirts that will be given to any walker that raises $50 and registers before October 15th!â€? The shirts are pink camouďƒ&#x;age with the CCA logo on the front, a “Survivorâ€? logo on the back along with the name of sponsors. Brenda and Mike Olds have stepped up as Walk Logistic Chairs and noted that the “Survivorâ€? theme will be present along the trail. “Along with sponsorship signs, there will be signs of encouragement decorated to imitate the show Survivor!â€? explained Brenda. While she gets to be creative with the trail, her husband, Mike, who is an Anne Arundel County Police Ofďƒžcer is focused on water, rest stops and safety. Darlene Ruggerio has been hard at work coordinating the dinner at Kentmorr. “Tammy Harper is deďƒžnitely one of our Angels!â€? According to Darlene, “She is going above and beyond with the dinner and has helped line up tents from Ebb Tide Catering!â€? Committee member Arlene Reading chimed in with the news that her husband, Bob, has agreed to step up and volunteer as the DJ the event. After the ladies were ďƒžnished cheering at the good news regarding “DJ Bobâ€?, Darlene pointed out that, “every business involved has either donated their services or offered a generous discount. We are blessed to be surrounded by such giving residents and business owners!â€? Anyone interested in participating in the walk can visit the new Cancer Comfort Angels website that was created by committee member, Jane Tayman who encourages everyone to “visit www.cancercomfortangels.org and under events, you can download the registration form along with a form to collect donations from those who sponsor your walk!â€? The registration form also includes information for the dinner. Of course, Auction Committee Chair, Sue Baxter reminds us that “even If you don’t walk, you can always support this cause by coming out to the dinner and participating in the Silent Auction!â€? As a non-proďƒžt agency afďƒžliated with the Foundation for Community Partnerships, Cancer Comfort Angels is a Christian based organization that has a mission to inspire and encourage beyond the clinical prognosis of cancer to help someone both in body and spirit. “It amazes me that while ďƒžghting cancer, Laurie’s concerned about others who might need comforting. I have no doubt that angels exist. I’m good friends with quite of few,â€? committee member Linda Aus says with a wink. For more information on the Cancer Comfort Angels, visit www.cancercomfortangels.org or “likeâ€? them on Facebook. If you know of anyone that might appreciate a “Comfort Kitâ€? please contact this group via email at cancercomfortangels@ gmail.com.

“Is enough being done to promote

breast cancer awareness in our area and in our country??

These local businesses are doing their share. Debbi Darling, ofce manager with Ashley Premier Properties in Centreville, says that there can never be too much awareness of this disease. Debbi’s aunt and grandmother are both breast cancer survivors, and she also adds that awareness is better than what it was in the past.

Sharon Fletcher, one of the owners of Kent Island Jewelry in Chester, says that more be done with making others aware of breast cancer. Having been a breast cancer survivor for the last 9 ½ years, she has a unique perspective on the situation. She has been with Kent Island Jewelry for the last 7 years.

D Dawn McClyment, an new employee of The Cutting RRoom in Centreville, believes that breast cancer awarenness is being promoted well. Her daughter attends Centreville Middle, and she says that those working in C the schools are doing their part in promoting breast th ccancer awareness.

Facts You Should Know – U.S.-based • More than 240,000 men & women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year • More than 40,000 men & women die each year from the disease • There are more than two-million breast cancer survivors • One person is diagnosed about every three minutes • One person dies of breast cancer about every 14 minutes • People over age of 70 account for 76% of breast cancer cases • People in their 40s account for 18% of the diagnoses • People under age 40 account for 5% of diagnoses

Melanie Drake 410-310-3616

Brooke Holt, nail technician with Classic Hair Design in Chester, believes that more is being done to promote breast cancer. She sees more ribbons around communities all the time. However, she doesn’t like that other businesses are trying to capitalize on the “pink” idea. She also mentions that awareness is at an all-time high, and that’s a good thing.

Heberto Ledesma, owner of Salon Heberto in Centreville, stated that there could always be more awareness when it comes to breast cancer, and what it does to individuals and families. He added that more has to be done. He believes in this wholeheartedly, because outside of his Centreville business on Route 213 North, there are many pink shoes next to a large sign that states, “Putting a Foot Down Against Breast Cancer.”

Giving back was never been so FUN! The Kent Narrows Development Foundation’s 6th Annual Taste of Kent Narrows at the Chesapeake Bay Exploration Center was a tremendous success. Samples from the culinary talents of the area’s nest restaurants, live entertainment, local wine and beer tastings, arts and craft vendors, children’s activities, and much more brought together people from all over to enjoy this ever-popular community event. This annual event benets the Kent Narrows Development Foundation which was created in 1990 to revitalize the Kent Narrows, a 955-acre waterfront area that has been identied as an important asset to Queen Anne’s County. The Foundation’s mission is to provide guidance and oversight for the formulation of a strategy to balance new economic growth, community redevelopment, support for the County’s shing and seafood industries, and public access to waterfront activities and amenities. The Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the area while preserving its unique character and history. Supported by a proud family, they look forward to what the next four years hold in store for this outstanding young man.

David Wheeler Honda Kia and Queen Anne’s County schools are teamed up for a rafe to help local students. According to Grant Thomas, sales manager at David Wheeler, “Due to budget cuts and the economy Queen Anne’s county public schools now have to charge students a $100 fee for each after school activity. This includes sports, band, theater, etc. So we have created the Support Our Students rafe to raise money for the students and their families to supplement the fee. If we can just reduce it to $50 to $70 per child with our rafe it will be a big help. We hope to sell enough tickets to get rid of it entirely.” Tickets can be purchased at various businesses throughout Queen Anne’s County. Prizes in the rafe include a day at Swan Cove Day Spa, a shing charter from Southpaw Fishing Charters, golf for four at Queenstown Harbor Links, a day at Salon Herberto, and a Sunday football party from DomiTo benet the nos. For more information and to nd locations 10 U Chesapeake Vipers Travel you can purchase tickets, contact Kathy Easter at Baseball Team Queen Anne’s County Schools – 410-758-2403 Sides provided by Ext. 148 or 198. BOSOM BUDDIES SAY “THANKS A MILLION” A generous gift from the Centreville National Bank to Bosom Buddies Charities, Inc. resulted in a million dollar milestone achievement for the Eastern Shore organization. The donation presented by Win Trice, President of CNB, raised the ve year old charity over the million dollar mark. Since its inception, the group founded by Susan Ponchock of Stevensville has pursued their mission to promote breast cancer awareness, encourage early detection, support treatment and celebrate healing. Their success has been profound. In just ve years they have provided a digital mammography machine and ultra-sound imaging equipment to the Anne Arundel Medical Center on Kent Island, funded the expansion of the Kent Island Breast Center and initiated monthly support group meetings for survivors, sponsored a Survivor Retreat this fall and are also funding a major ad campaign to remind women to get their mammograms. In September a “Thanks A Million” party was held at Annie’s Paramount Restaurant on Kent Island to celebrate reaching the milestone and thank all the current and former committee members. Physicians and key members of the Kent Island Breast Center also attended the celebration. The sixth Annual Bosom Buddies Ball will be held at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club on January 21, 2012. As in the past, businesses and individual donors are stepping up to be part of the successful event. Corporate and individual sponsorships are now available. For additional information please email bosombuddiesball@gmail.com or visit their website bosombuddiescharities.com.

Fondly, Tammy L. Rigoli Proud Member of Team “PINK SURVIVORS”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chances are for successful treatment. A mammogram can often identify breast changes that may be cancerous before physical symptoms develop; however, some cancers not apparent on a mammogram may still be felt by a woman or her health care provider. If you are 20 to 39 years old: • Have a clinical breast exam as part of your periodic health exam, at least every 3 years. • Report any breast change to your doctor right away. If you are 40 or older: • Have a yearly mammogram. • Have a routine breast exam as part of your periodic health exam at least every year. • Report any breast change to your doctor right away. You’ve Got the Power: The power to ght breast cancer is not only in the hands of the researchers and doctors – It is in all of our hands. Do You Qualify for Free Screening? If you are between the ages of 40 and 64, and do not have health insurance that covers clinical breast exams and mammograms, call the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) at your local health department. Talbot County residents should call 410-819-5600 to see if they qualify for free breast and cervical cancer screening.

THE NEW KENT ISLAND FARMERS’ MARKET… BRINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER by Ron Stafford

If you’ve been waiting for a good, local farmer’s market to return to your community and also to bring its people together, then your wait is over thanks to Diane Bedlin. With a background in marketing, Diane had an “aha” moment four years ago when she realized Kent Island needed a local market where farmers could sell their produce, meats and other goods. “I’ve lived here for the last 17 years. There is a bedroom community mentality here, and I’m trying to crack it.” Attending similar market events in Annapolis led Diane to consider a new farmers’ market in Queen Anne’s County. Ideas kept coming as she put the word out and things just started happening and coming together. “I became this food yenta…sort of an Erin Brokovich of food.” The range of food products available for purchase at the Farmers’ Market is quite large. You can nd grass-fed beef for sale, as well as fresh seafood selected from Captain Gaylord Clark of Two Oceans Seafood. The captain owns two sheries, one located in Alaska and one here on the Shore, and the name of his company reects the two oceans he shes for seafood. Jimmy Reynolds, owner of The Magnolia Bread Company in Sudlersville, offers his products at the market. And Chapels County Creamery is bringing the nest in cheeses and dairy products from which customers can select. The public can purchase products from 11 local vendors selling items such as yogurt, pork, chicken, eggs and seasonal fruits and vegetables. Diane also is looking to attract a hunting vendor to the market. The Farmers’ Market is not limited to just selling food. You can nd other items such as roasted coffees, herbal teas and fresh cut owers. Lavender farmer Jay Falstad of Calico Fields Farms in Millington offers his selection of body care products. As an added treat, you can listen to great music from local musician Glenn Shining as you do your shopping. “There is no place like this for farmers right now,” suggested Diane. “I believe this is

a venue where the community can truly come together.” Diane believes this market is unique. “If you travel to the Easton Marketplace, you will nd relatively few customers due to the high prices.” She expects the farmers’ market to grow beyond a county or Kent Island event. “We have interest in this market coming from outside our county borders.” The market will be open every Thursday, rain or shine, from 3:306:30pm. Diane hopes that it continues into the winter months. “With toll prices rising at the Bay Bridge, we need the community to support this local market and the local vendors. We have a gold mine here. It’s important for local farmers to make a buck, and we need to bring a sense of community back to this area.” The grand opening for the Kent Island Farmers’ Market was held on October 6. It is located at 155 Salitt Drive in the Chesapeake Bay Business Park between the Tilghman and Shippen business signs. You can friend Diane on Facebook and share ideas and thoughts at facebook.com/KentIslandFarmersMarket. You also can contact her at her email dianebedlin@gmail.com for more information.

CANCER-FREE… DOWN ON THE FARM By Ron Stafford

Kim Wagner of Black Bottoms Farms, LLC, located in Galena, MD is a humble woman with a profound story. Recently diagnosed with stage III breast cancer, she felt like she was dead. She knew that she had to beat the cancer, especially for her family, including her two children. After eating good, quality food, taking the necessary treatments, and helping to heal her body through proper nutrients, she was found cancer-free. As a gift for herself and family, she craved something big: “I wanted a farm!” A year ago, she started Black Bottoms Farms located in Kent County. She and her family strive to produce quality, all-natural foods for her family and others. They specialize in beef, poultry, pork and eggs. Although she lives in Anne Arundel County, she makes the trip over the Bay Bridge every day, and considers it a joy to do so. For more information on Kim, her story and her family farm, feel free to call her at 443962-0764, email her at BlackBottomFarms@aol. com or stop by and see her at the Kent Island Farmers Market.

Question of the Week: What is the difference between Market Value, Tax Assessed Value and Appraised Value? The appraised value of a house is a certied appraiser’s opinion of the worth of a home at a given point in time. Lenders require appraisals as part of the loan application process; fees range from $200 to $500. Market value is what price the house will bring at a given point in time. A comparative market analysis (CMA) is an informal estimate of market value, based on sales of comparable properties, performed by a REALTOR. A tax assessed value is a value placed on a property by Queen Anne’s County/town’s assessor’s ofce for the purpose of determining the property tax due. Either an appraisal or a comparative market analysis is the most accurate way to determine what your home is worth. Email me your RE questions to: Camille at: odonnellprop@ att.net

Winterize your home for longterm payback (ARA) - You may not want to think about it, but winter will be here again before you know it. Of course, winter means it’s time to turn the heat back on, which can be a strain on your home energy budget. “Older windows are a common culprit of air leakage in the home, but today’s replacement options have insulating values that are moving closer and closer to the insulating value of a wall,” says Chris Pickering, vice president of marketing, Ply Gem Windows. “If your home has original windows, having new energy efcient ones installed can make a signicant difference in comfort, while also saving energy.” For instance, installing highly insulating R-5 windows in a replacement project previously would have been cost prohibitive to most consumers. With new glass technologies now available, windows that achieve R-5 performance (U-value of 0.22 or lower) have become much more affordable. Ply Gem Windows offers an R-5 option on many product styles at multiple price points. “Air leakage through holes, gaps, and cracks is another one of the biggest causes of home heating and cooling loss,” says Mike Kontranowski, strategic marketing manager, Dow Building Solutions. “It accounts for a signicant amount of the energy used in most homes, with older homes being especially vulnerable to air leaks.”
