Event Planning Tip of the Week – Winter Wonderland Parties A fun theme for almost any occasion in December is a Winter Wonderland. Whether it’s a child’s birthday, baby shower, or your annual Christmas party, this theme works great for decorations, party favors and food. Create your own candy land with all sorts of sweet treats for food and décor. For dessert, think frosted sugar cookies (in the shapes of penguins, mittens, and stars), cupcakes with candy canes on top, and cakes decorated in white, red and green. Fill jars with your favorite colorful candies and give away goody bags with a “Thank you for coming” label on them for your guests to Àll as they leave. For decoration, cover foam trees in all sizes with red and white peppermints. For more advice, go to www.InspiredEventsllc.com or Ànd us on facebook.

Funds will be used to further research, give scholarships to students who’s lives are touched by cancer and provide encouragement to those battling cancer through Comfort Kits. Anyone interested in supporting the Cancer Comfort Angels or if you know of someone who would beneÀt from a Cancer Comfort Kit which includes a homemade blanket (for comfort), a cross (for support) and words of prayer (for encouragement), please visit www.cancercomfortangels.org or contact this group via email at cancercomfortangels@gmail.com.
Save the date!! Next year is Sunday, October 21st!

The Thrill of Victory
Mason Naecker, a 6-year-old who attends Àrst grade at Kent Island Elementary School, is a young athlete who has had great success in the motocross racing arena. He recently won the 2011 Maryland State Motocross Championship in the 50cc oil injected class held at Budds Creek, MD, and he also won the WVA State Motocross Championship held in Hedgesville, WVA. Racing since he was 4 years old, Mason has had tremendous success in this Àeld and has competed in other races in surrounding states. His favorite subject in school is gym, and he enjoys watching the career of Ryan Villopoto, a motocross and supercross champion. His teacher at KIES, Ms. Cindy Coughlin, and his entire family looks forward to what’s down the road for this athletic, bright young boy. Watch for a full length feature article in an upcoming issue of the Shore Update!

KIFA’s Got Talent Art is Alive at Kent Island Federation of Arts! For ‘KIFA’s Got Talent’, eight inÁuential community leaders have been paired up with eight professional artists to produce unique works of art. SHERIFF’S CHILDHOOD DREAM COMES TRUE KIFA’s Got Talent, a fund raising event matching community leaders and professional artists, resulted in a random pairing of Queen Anne’s County Sheriff Gary Hofmann and KIFA member and clay artist Carole Cascio. During one of their many working sessions, the sheriff described to Carole a childhood experience with throwing clay that resulted in a lifelong fascination with how pots were created. Sheriff Hofmann’s Ànished pieces, along with seven other guest artist’s’ Ànished art work, will be auctioned at KIFA’s annual holiday party and fund raiser at Kentmorr Restaurant on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. The evening’s festivities will also include music, food, a silent auction and a cash bar. ROCK HALL PASSES FERAL CAT LAW The Rock Hall mayor and council passed Ordinance 2011-05 by a unanimous vote. It outlaws feral cat colonies in town. All Àve council members were present at the meeting. After several minor amendments, the change to the town’s animal control ordinance removes all references to feral cats. Those with two or more cats have a “colony,” and if a complaint is received, the town will set a deadline for the kitties to be exiled. MARYLAND’S LARGEST TREE DAMAGED Maryland’s Largest Tree is now in Montgomery County, after high winds severely damaged a silver maple in Cecil County. OfÀcials at the Department of Natural Resources said the Elkton maple had been the state’s largest tree since 2006. The new title holder is an American sycamore located in the C&O Canal National Historical Park, about 300-feet from the Potomac River. FAKE NURSES UNCOVERED State ofÀcials are revoking 157 nursing assistants’ certiÀcates that were allegedly issued fraudulently. The inspector general of Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene found in 2009 that an employee had awarded 19 certiÀcates to people who did not apply or did not meet minimum standards. New Àndings show the number of bogus certiÀcates should have been much higher. The employee has been Àred. JUDGE ALLOWS LAWSUIT AGAINST NEW MD CONGRESSIONAL MAP A federal judge will allow a lawsuit seeking to overturn Maryland’s new congressional map to move forward. The case was Àled by a group of AfricanAmerican voters who say the new map was gerrymandered to help Democrats, but at the expense of minority voters. The plaintiffs are hoping the case will go to trial in January. Maryland’s congressional primary is next April 3rd, though that could be pushed back depending on how the case goes.

A DAY IN HISTORY America changed 48 years ago on November 22...the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. If you are old enough to remember, you are old enough to know what a signiÀcant mark it was in your life. The murder threw America into days of mourning, ending with Kennedy’s funeral and burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Since Kennedy’s assassination, only one member of JFK’s immediate family is still alive: his daughter, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. Son John Jr, and his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, died in a plane crash in 1999. WASHINGTON COLLEGE FRESHMEN AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS Amanda Varvar and Vistoria Zisser are the recipients of The Chester River Chorale’s Young Chorister Scholarships. The annual $500 scholarships were awarded to the two Washington College freshmen to further encourage the young singers to hone their craft.
MAYOR BAILEY WORKS TO SAVE ARMORY DEAL Chestertown Mayor Margo Bailey is trying to save the Armory deal, but a public quarrel over the negotiations with Washington College at a recent town council meeting resulted in moving the matter into executive session. According to the Chestertown Spy, the mayor was pushing the town council to go back to the July 18th meeting with the conditions placed on the deal, such as funding for the town’s Rails to Trails project, which were laid out in later memorandums of understanding. Washington College’s President Mitchell Reiss attended the sber 1 meeting and reiterated that additional demands placed on the deal by the U o n t Jrodaiy, OMcISSION town made the deal too expensive for the college, and he apologized for his SatuEE AD til ??? t FR p.m. reas role in the controversy. 5 st B
