Event Planning Tip of the Week – The Little Things This holiday season let your guests know that they’re special to you. Make handwritten place cards for each guest at your table and put them at their place setting. While table cards from your local paper or ofÀce supply store are very nice, a blank index card folded in half will do the job. Simply write their name on one side and a thought on why you’re thankful for that person on the other side. This small detail will make your dinner party more personal and will be something your guests remember long after dessert is served. For more advice, go to www.InspiredEventsllc.com or Ànd us on facebook.

They are there when we need them through hard times such as hurricanes or through joyful times such as bringing Santa on a Àre truck to community events. They are the members of the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department, under the leadership of President Kent Whalen. Kent works full-time as an estimator for an electrical contractor in Lanham MD and joined the UCVFD 10 years ago. “I Àlled out an application and the rest is history.” He has held the ofÀce of president for the last three years. You could say that ÀreÀghting is in his blood. Most men in his family have served as ÀreÀghters, and his daughter, Molly, is in the cadet program that works with kids ages 10 to 16 who want to become involved. Kent Whalen, “Every VFD is their own organization, president of UCVFD. “ Kent says. “Our jurisdiction starts south of Batts “You don’t have to be a hero Neck Road on Route 8 and continues south to the end to be a member.” of Kent Island.” The department is funded by donations from residents of the communities along Route 8. UCVFD has 45 volunteers, which is small compared to other departments in surrounding areas. How does the department operate and how does one become a ÀreÀghter or emergency medical technician (EMT)? To become a volunteer ÀreÀghter, the interested person completes an application, and then a short background check is performed. The applicant is brought to membership for a vote where interests are identiÀed to determine which one of three areas is best suited to the applicant’s interests and experience: Àre division, emergency medical services (EMS) or administrative work. There is a six month probationary period after which the applicant spends the next two years earning the required certiÀcation by taking classes (which are free) at various Àrehouses in Centreville and in Millersville in Anne Arundel County. FireÀghter training includes Fire I and Fire II and then onto training to be a Àre ofÀcer. EMS training is similar in that two classes, basic EMT and EMTI (the I stands for intermediate), result in training on how to be a Medic, which is followed by enhanced training to become a Paramedic. Kent adds, “You can take as many classes as you want, and there are always more being offered. It’s a changing industry.” When asked about team members who stand out, Kent offers two names: Ian Richards and Michael Parks. Ian currently attends Anne Arundel Community College, and lives on southern Kent Island. He has just completed Fire I. He’s looking into studying Fire Science, and Kent is proud of what he sees in Ian. “He’s a good kid…he’s going to be a keeper.” Michael Parks became involved with UCVFD about 10 to 11 years ago after seeing and hearing about the need from his wife and son who also are members. He Àrst trained as a ÀreÀghter and continued onto the ofÀcer level. Seeing the need in EMS work, he continued in his training in EMS to the EMT-B level, and currently serves as EMS Chief and Captain. Michael says, “There is great reward in seeing that you make a difference for someone in an emergency.” What does the future hold for UCVFD? Kent would like to see their numbers grow. “I would love to have 100 volunteers in the department.” He states that their number one goal is recruitment. “We want them. You don’t have to be a hero to be a member.” For more information, call 410-643-1162 or visit the Àrehouse located at 9406 Romancoke Road. You also can contact them through their website www.ucfvd. org.

OH MY CHOCOLATE… APPLES, FOUNTAINS AND SO MUCH MORE It’s something that many of us crave at different times, and we cannot deny that craving. That something is chocolate, and Bob and Jim Greeno, co-owners of Oh My Chocolate located in Chester, have been meeting the needs of local chocolate lovers since the summer of 2009. Growing up, Bob worked in the family auto repair and gas station business until the 1990s when the industry changed. Bob Greeno, co-own- His father took a different career path and bought a franer of Oh My Choco- chise for Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory located in the late in Chester, and Queenstown Outlets. The business grew, and two more locahis brother Jim have tions were added in Arundel Mills and Columbia Mall. But been meeting the the lease on the Queenstown location was not renewed, and needs of chocolate the other stores were not doing well. Around that time, retail space became available in Chester, and Bob and his brother lovers since 2009. Jim took the opportunity to open Oh My Chocolate in August 2009. Slowly word spread about this exciting, new business. Bob and his team are proud to offer the Ànest in chocolate. Almost everything you see when you step into their store is made on the premises and usually that same day. They pride themselves on having fresh products with nothing in the store more than one week old. The chocolate itself is world class and on par with European chocolate…a real gourmet treat. Bob adds, “It contains no preservatives or waxes, and comes in two grades higher than what Godiva uses.” All of this translates into great sales. In addition to the Chester storefront, a large part of their business is outside sales, ranging from tiered chocolate fountains to custom caramel Granny Smith apples. Bob is especially proud of this area of the business. “Our caramel is made from scratch, and our apples are what we’re most known for, “Bob says. The Fall apple sales this year have been fantastic. In a recent year, Oh My Chocolate received a call from the White House for 1500 apples, which Bob and his team proudly fulÀlled. Business is growing outside the storefront. A grocery store in Elkridge MD as well as store chains in other states, including New York, have gotten the word and are coming to him with their requests. Weddings also are a large part of the company’s recent success. From September 1 until now, Bob and his team provided chocolate fountains and other goodies for at least 50 weddings. Recently, Oh My Chocolate was chosen by the second largest wedding planner in New York City to be their chocolatier. Their business goal is simple. Bob says, “The store is a place to showcase the product, and our growth areas are weddings and corporate sales.” Bob’s brother Jim helps by handling orders that come in via phone or from their website. “He picks up the ball where I lack time or skill, “Bob chimes in. Wanda Tyler is manager of the store, and has been with the business for the past eight years. They also have great help behind the counter. For more information, give them a call at 410-643-7111 or visit them at Known for decadent apples, Oh My 600A Abruzzi Drive in Chester. TRIO JOINS UNITED WAY BOARD! Paula Warner, President of the United Way of Queen Anne’s County, is pleased to announce the addition of Neil Bourdelaise, Kate Twigg and Francis Roudiez to the Board of Directors. Neil Bourdelaise is a Sales Manager and Top Producer for Metlife Home Loans and has been in the mortgage banking industry for 9 years. He graduated from Roanoke College in Virginia with a Bachelors of Business Administration. While he is a long time resident of Maryland, he and his wife recently bought a home in Grasonville and they love the Eastern Shore. Neil feels his positive outlook and communication skills will be a great asset to the United Way of Queen Anne’s County and his excitement to get involved in the community has already led him to serve on the United Way Golf Tournament Committee. The board is thrilled to have him and look forward to more great things from Mr. Bourdelaise! Kate Twigg and her husband recently moved to Kent Island. With a strong belief in community service, once voted to the board, she immediately already agreed to co-Chair the “Bloom’s for United Way” event held each spring. She is also currently serving on the Board of “Maryland’s Fight Against Cancer” with United Way Vice President, Todd Wilhoit. Ms. Twigg works in Annapolis for Chesapeake BeneÀts, Inc. as an employee beneÀts broker. The United Way is happy to welcome Kate to the board!

OYSTER COVE COMMUNITY PARTNERS WITH VFW AND QAC FOOD PROGRAM TO SUPPORT VETERANS AND LOCAL FAMILIES The Oyster Cove community in Grasonville has started an outreach program in an effort to give back to the community and become more involved in helping others. Several projects completed so far this year were “Operation Shoebox” and the Thanksgiving Food Program. Operation Shoebox is a non-proÀt organization founded in 2003 to support the men and women deployed outside the USA. Their primary mission according to their website is “to help raise (troops) morale and let them know they are cared about. We accomplish our mission with care packages, letters, and bulk shipping of items that can be beneÀcial to them during their deployment. Our Organization is composed of over 1300 dedicated volunteers in three locations and also volunteers all across the USA that assist in accomplishing our mission...” One of the important ways this organization helps to support the troops is with care packages. Traditionally each care package has been sent in a cloth bag with a draw string handmade by one of the program volunteers. A handwritten letter is usually included along with snacks, hygiene and stationary packets and other small items that might be useful and/or interesting or helpful to the troops. During the Operation Shoebox drive that started in July and ended in September, Oyster Cove households donated over 900 items to be sent in shoe boxes for the troops serving in Afghanistan. Oyster Cove was a collection site for the VFW Memorial Post 7464 in Grasonville. In October the community began collecting food for the Queen Anne’s County Community Thanksgiving Food Program and the Living Water Food Bank and Thrift Shop in Stevensville. Through food donations the Oyster Cove community provided ten families Thanksgiving food boxes consisting of a frozen turkey plus all the trimmings from stufÀng to vegetables, desserts and snacks for kids. The boxes were for families of two all the way up to seven. So much was collected for the Thanksgiving boxes that additional food could be donated to the Living Water Food Bank. Oyster Cove will be continuing their outreach efforts throughout the year. Donations for troops are always welcome at the VFW Post in Grasonville. For more information on the Operation Shoebox program, go to www.operationshoebox.com.

Former United Way Chair Francis Roudiez brings with him a wealth of knowledge regarding non-proÀts and fundraising as he is active with the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department and has served on the Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club of Kent Island boards. Mr. Roudiez owns Healthcare Brokerage Services and lives on Kent Island. We know that Francis will not hesitate to get involved and Ànd his niche at the United Way and we look forward to his support! The United Way of Queen Anne’s County is all about neighbors helping neighbors! They allocate funds to 23 local agencies that serve community needs from children to seniors covering areas from health and human services, to the arts and the environment. If you would like more information about the United Way, please visit their website www.unitedwayqac.org or call Executive Director, Sandra Early at 410-643-6288.
