Helpful Holiday Hints Ask an expert... How do I choose the right piece of jewelry? Paula A. Warner, owner of Paula’s Fine Jewelry located in Chester, says that there are important questions that should be asked (and of course, answered) when choosing the right piece of jewelry. When choosing a diamond, the 4 c’s (cut, clarity, color and carat weight) should be taken into consideration. Whether the one receiving the gift prefers silver or gold should also be considered. The age of the person should be taken into account too as the gift should be different for a child than an adult. In addition, the type of product should be contemplated, whether it be a ring, a pendant or a necklace of some sort. Paula and her team of experts are ready to assist you in this important choice of jewelry selection this Christmas season, For more info call 410-643-8040.

Event Planning Tip of the Week – Christmas Table Centerpiece Ideas

A simple but elegant centerpiece for your Christmas dinner table is to Àll clear glass vases of different sizes with bright Christmas balls. Another idea is to Àll a clear glass vase with cranberries and then add either white Áowers or a white pillar candle. Or take your candle sticks and balance large bright Christmas balls on top. Floating candles are also fun and you can add small red, white or green balls to Áoat beneath the candles. For a smaller table, Àll large martini glasses instead of vases. For more advice, go to www.InspiredEventsllc.com or Ànd us on facebook.

Your Local Christmas Shop – An Eastridge Garden By Ron Stafford

Page 6

• Be sure to place your ornaments on both the inside and outside of the tree to create depth and interest. Do not hang all your ornaments on the tips of branches. • If you are decorating a live tree, be sure to properly preserve the tree so you can enjoy it longer. Add the product Prolong to hot water at the base of the tree. The tree will soak up a lot of water during the Àrst week, so be sure to check the water level regularly and add warm water as needed. For more information on this and other unique offerings, visit the Fosters at An Eastridge Garden at 533 Dulin Clark Road in Centreville, or give them a call at 410-758-3650. They are open year round, and their hours of operation through the end of December are Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm and Sundays 10am to 4pm. Their website is eastridgegarden.com.

Dale and Sally Foster, owners of An Eastridge Garden located in Centreville, invite you to visit their unique plant nursery and garden supply store, especially during the holiday season when they open their Christmas shop. They offer a variety of holiday items: festive table centerpieces; unusual gift ideas for those difÀcult-to-buy-for persons on your list; wreaths and greenery for decorating your home indoors or outdoors; and, novel ideas for decorating Christmas trees and other plants. Why not consider purchasing a boxwood and decorating for the holidays rather than the usual Christmas tree? The ideas are endless, and An Eastridge Garden can help you with your decorating needs. Dale and Sally opened their gift shop in 1995, and the popularity and size of their shop has grown each year. Here are some “tricks of the trade” the Fosters offer for decorating the perfect Christmas tree.

More Tree Decorating Ideas – Let’s Get Creative Here are more ideas for decorating your Christmas trees and adding a touch of creativity to your holidays. There are no rules when it comes to Christmas trees and Christmas ornaments. If you prefer the traditional green Christmas tree, you have tons of decorating options. If you are more bold and unconventional, try a purple, pink, white, black Christmas tree this year.

• Choose a basic theme for your tree. It can be based on the style of the room in which you are placing the tree (modern, Victorian, country, nature); on a special family theme (handmade ornaments, vacation memories,); or, fun themes such as a Santa tree or a pine cone tree.

Nautical Themes – If your room has a nautical theme, there are lots of ways to carry this theme to your tree ornaments. Spray paint seashells in gold or use a thin paintbrush to outline just the edges in gold. Bleached white sand dollars look great on the tree; just attach a matching ribbon for a hanger. You can also use small boats, seagulls, pelicans, starÀsh and tropical Àsh to make the beach or nautical theme interesting.

• Color coordinate your ornaments. Try an all-red theme, a blue and green theme, or an all-white theme. If you are really creative, go for a non-traditional Christmas color such as purple.

Victorian Themes – If your home is Victorian in style, include ribbons, bows, and crocheted ornaments like angels and bells on your tree. Add a few small nosegays of dried Áowers, ornaments made of lace, or bows and streamers to complete the theme. You also can use Victorian miniatures like dollhouse furniture as Christmas ornaments.

• Select a main focal point of the tree and start working your decorations around the tree. Begin with Àller ornaments and then place your specialty ornaments where they can standout.

Outdoorsy Theme – If you live in a log cabin or just love the outdoors, there is no better way to show off your love of camping, hunting or Àshing. You can Ànd ornaments for your favorite outdoor pastime. Use twigs or cinnamon sticks tied together in bunches as Àllers and to add fragrance to your tree. Collect pine cones on your trips, spray paint them or leave them natural, to enhance the outdoor theme. Country Home Theme – If you prefer the cozy country theme, choose decorations made of calico, Áannel, or plaids. Patchwork teddy bears and quilted ornaments also add a nice touch. Find miniatures like washboards, pails, sleds, or rocking chairs and turn them into ornaments. Floral Theme – A Áoral motif easily translates to a Christmas tree adorned with dried and silk Áowers. Make garlands by gluing Áowers to soft rope, or place bunches of lacy baby’s breath among the branches. Large poinsettias or other single blooms in among the branches of the tree are a lovely addition. Sleek, Modern Theme - To create a modern Christmas tree, choose a monochromatic theme that accentuates the colors in the room or home. Then select Christmas ornaments in different shades of the same color. Sweet Treat Theme – You can use cookies and candies to decorate your tree. String popcorn and cranberries on a string to use as a natural garland. Then Àll the spaces with homemade cookies and an assortment of Christmas candies such as candy canes and ribbon candies. Bold Colors for Christmas Trees – If you want to be bold and break with the traditional green tree, how about a purple or pink Christmas tree? For the ultra-modern look of black and white, how about a black Christmas tree with all white ornaments? Just think of the possibilities! A purple Christmas tree with pink Christmas ornaments, a white Christmas tree with ornaments in shades of red or deep burgundy? Or a pink Christmas tree with ornaments in black and white?

1. Oasis (a wet spongy Áoral foam) is a great preservative for greenery. Use it at the bottom of vases or as the backing to hold greenery. When soaked in water it will retain the moisture for longer living greenery. 2. “Wilt Pruf” can be lightly misted/sprayed over the foliage. 3. “Prolong” by Planttabs is wonderful for your tree. You can add it to the water at the base of your tree or in vases with live greenery. 4. Mist your greenery every day. Simply keep a spray bottle of water handy and lightly spray each day. 5. Enjoy the look and scent of fresh greenery for the Holiday Season!

Patty Kneall, owner of Kent Island Jewelryy in Chester, says when you’re in a rush, it’s easy to give your jewelry a quick check. For rings, run your Ànger over the top of your diamond, if you feel the diamond only, your prongs are worn. If your ring is catching your clothing, a prong is “lifting”. For anyone who wears a chain all the time, check the ends of the chain. They will start wearing out and gradually get thinner. These ends can be replaced or repaired. Stop by the store and we will check and clean your ring for free! We are located at 1801 Main Street, Chester and be reached at 410-643-7766.

Helpful Holiday Hints Ask an expert... When shopping online, what should I consider? Jeff Weese, owner of Joslex Studios, says... • Shop at familiar stores or stores that have a long history of good customer service. If a store only has recent customer reviews, that can be a big red Áag. • Make sure the checkout process is secure. You should see https:// instead of http:// preceding the site’s URL. • Don’t give unnecessary information. No i ss online shopping store needs your social security number or birthday to do business. • Use strong, unique passwords. A good way to keep your passwords unique to each site is to prepend the Àrst couple of letters of the site’s name to your usual password. That keeps it easy to remember but unique to the site. • Keep your web browser up-to-date. Firefox, Chrome, or Safari are the best choices, but if you must use Internet Explorer, be sure to use Internet Explorer 9. For more info call 443-478-8346.

The Schwink family (seated) pose with the Shore Update elves. Thank you all for helping us collect toys for Michael’s toy drive for the The Dupont Hospital in Delaware. We came home with many toys (gifts) for those wonderful children and we will be delivering them soon. Your efforts in helping us make a wonderful memory for OUR MICHAEL CLARK SCHWINK ( SCHWINKYS TOY DRIVE) was greatly appreciated . Every toy will give another child some happiness while they are in the hospital and it will be in memory of Michael. Thank you for including our Àrst Schwinkys Toy Drive in the Àrst annual Christmas by the Bay. We greatly appreciate all your help, Michael’s family Pat, Glenn, Chris and Laura (Michael’s parents and brother and sisterin-law)

Dave and Tammy Harper, far left and far right, hosted Christmas by the Bay at their restaurant Kentmorr. They are standing with the Schwink family, whose son Michael worked at Kentmorr for many years. Samuel Hoffman, son of Shore Update owners Michael and Cheryl, checks in on his grandma and Update team member Wilma Rubock.

Linda Austin, of Long & Foster and owner of Rita’s, wins a rafÁe as Shore Update team member Diana Paladino cheers her on. Cathy Gerring, Shore Update team member, thanks everyone for attending and for their support. Bernie, of Island Entertainment, deejayed the event.

Vicki Souder, Shore Update team member, thanks Update fan Ryan Freeman for his hard work at the event. Cheri Hoffman, owner of the Shore Update, takes a moment to thank Jeff Weese, owner of Joslex Studios, for his hard work in launching Christmas by the Bay at www.ShoreUpdate.com

If you read my previous column about Christmas by the Bay, you know that it all began with a string of miracles. SufÀce it to say, the miracles continued. The Schwink and Candleana families were so gracious, appreciative and moved by the evening. Not only were we able to tell them they have a community that loves and supports them, we were able to show them. Friends, neighbors, kids, co-workers and businesses came together for an evening of outreach. Whether people knew each other or not, you could feel the closeness in the room... we were bound by our sense of community. Our community also stood by the words “SHOP LOCAL.” Christmas by the Bay garnered almost $25,000 in gift cards in just three short weeks. Mind blowing! I honestly haven’t been this moved since our community reached out to us when Jacob was sick. I often say it is our community and friend’s support, Jacob’s strength and God’s love that gets us through each day. I felt so blessed to reach out to these two families at Christmas by the Bay. When we say “Buy Local. Shop Local. Give Local.,” we mean it! Until next time, Cheri Hoffman Shore Update owner, team member and local Photos by Haley Miksit

Austin Khiel is a 14-year-old freshman at Queen Anne’s County High School who plays point guard for the JV men’s basketball team. Having a love for basketball since he was 4, basketball superstars Dwane Wade and Michael Jordan inspire him to do his best. Austin applies himself in all he does, both in the classroom and on the court, and counts English and math as his favorite subjects. When he’s not practicing and studying, Austin enjoys Àshing as a hobby. As of now, he plans to go to North Carolina to pursue a higher education. A great son, his family is amazed at how focused and dedicated he is on his future plans at such a young age, and they look forward to what will happen for him, both at QACHS and later in life.

Helpful Holiday Hints Ask an expert... What’s the best way to pamper myself this holiday season? CertiÀed massage therapist and licensed aesthetician Jan Siarnicki, with By the Beach Tanning Salons, says the best way to pamper yourself during the stress of the holidays is to indulge in a deep tissue or Swedish massage. A Swedish massage, which can take from 30 to 90 minutes, is a gentler massage where continuous strokes are used to put you in a Zen-like state, with the ultimate end goal of having you feel relaxed and refreshed. A deep tissue massage is used to target problematic areas such as the neck, back or hands, and takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Jan believes in making sure every customer gets the right massage tailored to their speciÀc needs. Appointments are needed, and you can contact her at By the Beach at 410-604-1777.

Marie Hofman, with Paula’s Fine Jewelry in Chester, remembers getting an old-fashioned reel-to-reel tape player and recorder when she was 12. Singing along to “Mony, Mony”, she and her friends had a grand time. Marie has been at Paula’s since 2002 and has lived here on the Shore since 1983. John Oertly, manager of Chesapeake Outdoors in Chester, had a different take on our question of the week. He says his customers often have the unique request of crab pots to give to family and friends even though crabbing is out of season during this time of the year. John has been with the business for the past 2-1/2 years and has held the position of manager for the past 1-1/2 years. He looks forward to Àlling the unique requests of his customers, whether it be in crabbing season or not.

Helpful Holiday Hints Ask an expert... What’s new in nail fashion this holiday season? The friendly and knowledgeable staff of Whit’s End Salon and Spa, located in Stevensville, say that the top trend this season for holiday nails is shellac. It lasts for more than two weeks, has a beautiful appearance, and takesvirtually no time to dry. Pictured here (from left to right) are Stacey Owen (skin care specialist), Tammy Beville (who works with hair and nail care) and Stephanie Mahlow (nail technician). Whitney and her entire team at Whit’s End look forward to providing you with the very best services this Christmas season. To schedule an appointment, call 410-643-4488.

Helpful Holiday Hints

Ask an expert...

What is the correct way to set a holiday dinner table? “Which fork do I use?” We are sure this is a question most ask or hear often. If only we had a nickel for every time we answered, “Start from the outside and work in.” There are many ways to set a table, but the number one rule is the setting should suit your menu. For instance, if you are having a four course formal dinner you will need more plates and silverware than perhaps something last minute and informal. Either way, here are basic guidelines for some typical table settings. But always remember to relax, be creative and make it your own.

She is a certiÀed International Event and Wedding Planning Professional.

Simple, elegant centerpiece idea... be creative with what you have on hand!

Which wines do you recommend this holiday? Jim Haskell, of Centreville Liquors, says there is a perfect wine for every meal and every occasion. Holiday wrapped Spumanti (pictured right) is the perfect aperitif and is only $9.99. Reindeer Ranch, pictured center, is a wonderful cuvee or blended wine and is only $6.99 per bottle. For the traditional meal, Jim recommends Mark West Pinot Noir at $12.99 per bottle. It is a wonderful, light, fruity red that has enough body and Áavor to stand up to most holiday dishes. He also offers over 15 varieties of Pinot Noir starting at $5.99. Centreville Liquors is located in the Food Lion Shopping Center and can be reached at 410-758-4688.

Can you recommend an elegant, easy holiday dessert? Dave & Tammy Harper, owners of Kentmorr Restaurant, share this go-to favorite: Dave Harper’s Kentmorr Rum Cake Cake ingredients: 1 box moist yellow cake mix 4 whole eggs 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup salad oil 1/2 cup spiced (dark) rum 1 package of instant vanilla pudding Sauce: Cook over medium heat until dissolved, put aside until cake is done. 1/2 cup spiced rum, 1/2 cup melted butter, 1/4 cup water, 1/2 cup white sugar Blend all cake ingredients well. Pour this mixture into a greased bundt pan. Bake the cake at 350 degrees for approximately 35-40 minutes (or until a toothpick stuck in the cake comes out clean). When cake is done, cool for 10 minutes, take the cake out of the bundt pan and then top the cake with the sauce.

News In Brief Brought to You By

YOUR INFORMATION STATION

O’MALLEYS AND BUSINESS LEADERS TRAVEL TO INDIA Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley travelled to India for a week-long trip aimed at drumming up investment in the state of Maryland. The governor says Maryland has lots to offer investors. He notes that per capita, Maryland is tops in the number of residents with PhDs and houses a number of government and private sector groups with expertise in healthcare, life sciences, biotech and IT. His Àrst stop was in the Middle Eastern nation of Qatar. While in India, he visited with leaders in Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. A number of business leaders accompanied him as well as his wife, Judge Katie O’Malley, who met with legal ofÀcials. UPDATE ON ROBOCALL TRIAL A jury is set to begin hearing testimony in the case against campaign aide Paul Schurick. The 55-year-old worked for former Republican Governor Robert Ehrlich in 2010 when he again ran for governor. Schurick is charged with approving misleading robocalls on election night to Democrats in predominantly black districts to suppress voting. Prosecutors in the election day robocall trial say a plan to suppress the African-American vote in Baltimore and Prince George’s County was not devised until about 3pm that day. They say it was a desperate attempt to help former Governor Bob Ehrlich’s bid to upset Governor Martin O’Malley. The woman who recorded the robocall testiÀed yesterday that she is to blame for the fact that the calls only went to Democrats. Rhonda Russell told reporters the message was supposed to motivate Ehrlich supporters. Prosecutors presented jurors with emails exchanged by campaign members panicking as the day went on. Paul Schurick’s lawyer says campaign consultant Julius Henson is to blame for the calls. Henson goes on trial next year. THANKSGIVING ARRESTS FOR DRUNKEN DRIVING Maryland State Police say they arrested more than 100 people for drunken driving around the Thanksgiving holiday. Police say troopers arrested 113 suspected drunk drivers, responded to 284 trafÀc crashes, and investigated Àve fatal crashes in which six people were killed. The crashes were in Frederick, Washington, Harford and Queen Anne’s counties. Troopers issued a total of more than 10,000 trafÀc citations and warnings over the holiday period. CENTREVILLE MAN HURT IN DEER HUNTING ACCIDENT A Centreville man had to be rushed to the hospital after he was injured in a weekend hunting accident. According to Maryland Natural Resources Police, the accident occurred on November 26 on Perlee Road near Centreville. Police said the investigation revealed that 47-year-old Jeff Wolfe fell from a tree stand after he attempted to shoot at a deer. Investigators said Wolfe was wearing a safety harness, but it was not connected to the tree. Wolfe was Áown to Shock Trauma for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. ARMORY DEAL BACK ON BURNER? Washington College conÀrmed they have the most recent offer from the Chestertown Town Council to sell the SFC John H. Newnam Armory to the college. “We are not walking away from the Armory,” said WC Director of Media Relations Kay MacIntosh. “There will be a meeting with the President and the Board of Governors to discuss the Town’s offer.”

Helpful Holiday Hints Ask an expert... How much holiday money can I get from selling gold? Patty Kneall, owner of Kent Island Jewelry in Chester, says it depends on what the gold market is at the moment. She does point out that most people are surprised by how much money they receive when selling their gold. Lic#2190 After cleaning out your jewelry box of wanted items and collecting a pile such as the one pictured can generate around $1,000 of cash! She suggests stopping by with your items to get an estimate. There is never any obligation to sell. For a limited time, she is also offering an extra $25 when you sell $100 or more. Stop by today... they are located at exit 39B, Main Street, Chester and can be reached at 410-643-7766.

Page 26

The most recent offer from the Mayor and Council came at the eleventh-hour as WC President Mitchell B. Reiss formally withdrew the college’s interest in purchasing the Armory. Spirited division on the Council and bitter public discourse had plagued the negotiations since the July 18 council meeting. Council members were split on how the town should be compensated for selling its “option” in the Armory, and the college stood its ground on Àscal constraints, rejecting a requirement to help fund the town’s Rail-Trails project as part of the purchase agreement. MacIntosh said the college would probably respond to the town’s new offer within the week. NEED A SMOKE ALARM? Delmarva Power donated residential smoke alarms to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s ofÀce for distribution throughout Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Through the company’s Emergency Services Partnership Program, the Àre marshal’s ofÀce received 2,000 regular smoke alarms and 60 special needs smoke alarms for the deaf and hard of hearing. The special needs alarms emit a bright strobe light as well as an extremely high-volume, audible alarm. Additional organizations supporting this effort include: the Maryland State Firemen’s Association, Fire and Burn Safety Coalition of Maryland, Maryland State Fire Prevention Commission and Maryland Fire Chief’s Association. Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse and Harris Communications of Minnesota provided these alarms to Delmarva Power at a reduced cost to help support this safety effort. Since 2000, Delmarva Power has donated 16,400 regular smoke alarms, 882 special needs smoke alarms and 1,450 carbon monoxide alarms to Àre safety ofÀcials in Delaware and Maryland. TRUCKING INDUSTRIES WORK AROUND REGULATIONS The nation’s trucking regulation agency is moving to stop companies that were shut down for repeated safety violations from staying in business by changing their names. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it will upgrade its screening of applicants who want to operate trucking companies. The move comes after Hanover-based Gunther’s Transport was shut down for being an “imminent hazard” to the public and was recently reincarnated by the owner’s son. SAME-SEX MARRIAGE GETS NEW BATTLE IN MARYLAND Religious opponents of same-sex marriage are launching a new coalition. The Maryland Marriage Alliance, which describes itself as a multi-racial and bipartisan coalition of supporters of the traditional deÀnition of marriage, held a news conference led by Pastor Derek McCoy, executive director of the Maryland Family Alliance. MARYLAND NEAR TOP IN FOOD STAMP FRAUD Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Ànds that Maryland and Virginia led the nation in 2010 when it came to the amount of taxpayer dollars wasted on food stamp fraud. Maryland ranks second for improper losses, and the Commonwealth comes in at number Àve. For every $100 in beneÀts given out in Maryland, $6.11 went to people who were not eligible, costing the state $60-million. The national average was $3.05 for every $100 spent on food stamps. TEXTING CAMPAIGN DONATIONS A new state regulation allowing campaign donations by text message is expected to take effect soon. Maryland’s General Assembly passed the legislation this year, and the Board of Elections has been directed to implement the change. The system is expected to be in place early next year, and would make Maryland the second state to allow such contributions to candidates for state ofÀce. CBF BLOWS WHISTLE ON POSSIBLE FRACKING AIR POLLUTION SITES The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says infrared videos show air pollution coming from natural gas sites springing up across the country. The environmental group announced that it sent the videos to the federal Environmental Protection Agency along with a letter saying they show hydrocarbon emissions are not being adequately controlled. A boom in drilling in previously undrillable sites using a technique known as hydraulic fracturing prompted environmentalists to sue the EPA last year over regulation. In response, the agency proposed new rules in July to control air pollution at oil and gas wells for the Àrst time. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says it commissioned infrared video at 15 sites in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia and found otherwise invisible emissions at 11. Helpful Holiday Hints Ask an expert...

Home Staging for the Holidays This is one of the most magical times of the year! But, when we think about all that we have to do to prepare for the holidays, from gift buying, to celebrating, to decorating, it may become quite stressful as well. Those who have their homes on the market during the holidays may experience an extra element of anxiety. Try creating a calm, warm and inviting space for the holidays, one that you will enjoy, as well as your friends and family. 1. Create a calming feel. Think the less-is-more mantra. 2. Complement your home decor. Before you start taking out all your decorations, stand back and look at your current decor. If your living room is painted a soothing ocean-blue hue, skip the clashing red garland and consider using white snowÁakes, or a silver glass ball wreath. The same for your Christmas tree. Using white or blue lights and silver or shimmering white bulbs would be beautiful against the blue hue of the walls. 3. Accentuate the positive features of your home. Too many trimmings can be distracting, but the right accessories can really make a positive impact. 4. Consider your choice of lighting. To create a beautiful welcoming entry to your home, the outside decorations should complement what your guests will enjoy inside. 5. Clear the clutter. A few holiday decorations can stir the holiday spirit, but don’t feel obliged to hang every last ornament or decorate every room. 6. Bring the outside in. At the craft or hardware store purchase some inexpensive spray paint in silver or gold. Spray pinecones or spent magnolia or hydrangea Áowers to use as a centerpiece or place in a bowl. 7. Let your decorations do double duty. If you have large windows in the front of your home, consider placing the Christmas tree in the window. 8. Maximize the sense of smell. Lighting candles in the scents of cinnamon, apple spice, or baked cookies always gives a warm feeling. 9. Have fun. Chances are you have your own ideas as well. Decorating for the holidays should be fun and leave you with a warm glow. For more Holiday Home Staging ideas you can follow my posts at Kent Island On-line under “Forum” and “Ask the Expert.” -Lorraine Scharf Pierce, ASP®, IAHSP® Lighthouse Home Staging & Design, LLC. 1-443-822-5648 or Lighthousestaging@verizon.net
