Barrel City was incorporated in 1969 soon after the completion of Cedar Creek Lake and is now the second-largest city in Henderson County. The first city council meeting was held on June 17, 1969, in the home of Mayor Roscoe Welch, for whom Welch Lane is named. The first year of council meetings were held in the mayor and council members’ homes until the construction of the first City Hall was completed Feb. 23, 1970.

The city also has a terrific park that offers disc golf, horseshoe pits, a skate park, an amphitheater, exercise work stations, a fishing pond and walking trails.
