W

elcome to cooler temperatures after what seemed like a long, long hot summer. Welcome to football games, pumpkins and bonfires by the lake.

Fall in Texas can be a mixed bag of weather from Indian Summer to frosty mornings and everything in between, but there always seems to be plenty to do and much of it is outdoors. With many cities and businesses planning festivals and fundraisers, there are many things to choose from when planning a weekend, whether you are a full-time resident or a visitor. And the Cedar Creek Lake Area residents will offer a smile or a quick hello wherever you stop.

When Fall turns to Winter, every city sparkles in its own right, with festive decorations as the Christmas Holidays approach. Cities like Eustace have a tree lighting event on the town square, Mabank’s Market Street closes to traffic and becomes a winter wonderland for Ole Fashion Christmas and this year Kemp brings back a holiday tradition with a parade.

With all the new places to shop, this holiday season offers something for everyone from the bargain shopper to those shopping for unique and special gifts. Market Street in Mabank, downtown Malakoff and all over the lake area, boutiques have sprung up offering a range of gift ideas for even the most discriminating shopper. Buying local is definitely the way to go!

And the food! The Cedar Creek Lake Area is home to many chain restaurants as well as unique dining experiences like Fig and Parsley in Tool, Waves by W456, the Whistlestop in Trinidad and Simple Thymes in Malakoff. The offerings are varied, exquisitely prepared and something for every palate. Fig and Parsley even has many ready to prepare meals that are healthy, flavorful and delicious. After a long day out shopping, pick up a great meal, head home to sit by the fireplace and enjoy it with a nice glass of wine from a nearby winery. The possibilities are endless.

You can probably already tell that Fall is my favorite time of year and the Cedar Creek Lake Area is simply the best place to enjoy it.

FRYING CATFISH FOR 40 YEARS

O

n the corner of State Highway 274, aka North Seven Points Blvd., and Texas State Highway 334 aka East Cedar Creek Parkway, in the town of Seven Points, you will find a blue building with a sign of a catfish in a chef hat. This has been home to Molly’s Catfish Corner since 1983.

The restaurant was run by the family until fourteen years ago when it was all placed in Pyles’ name and renamed Molly’s Catfish Corner. Pyle said, “This is my home. When people come here, I feel like they are coming to eat dinner with us. I want their food to be good. I am very particular; I know we are not perfect, but we try to be.”

Oct. 20 Molly Pyle celebrated 40 years of frying catfish, onion rings, shrimp, hushpuppies, chopping cabbage for coleslaw, and much more. When asked why a restaurant? Pyle replied, “I love to cook.”

The American farm-raised catfish arrives daily. Pyle’s son and partner, Ryan Pirtle, cleans and filets the fish every morning.

Molly’s Catfish Corner is open three and a half days a week, Thursday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Pyle’s family had been in the restaurant business for many years and that is where she developed her love for cooking.

Pyles’ uncle had several catfish restaurants in the Dallas area.

He loved to cook for family gatherings. He especially liked to cook catfish and frog legs. On a trip to New Orleans, he met a chef. Liking her hushpuppies, he bought the recipe. That same recipe, with a few modifications, is the same one that is used today at Molly’s Catfish Corner. Pyle said that he was the one who took her under his wing at a very young age and taught her the business.

Catfish Corner opened Oct. 20, 1983. The owners were Pyle and her brother David Henderson. Pyle said, “six months into it I had to go get a job; we were not making any money. I went back to work.” Within a short time, the restaurant blew up and the dining section had to have a room added on. Pyle continued with her job and worked at the restaurant at the same time. Eventually finding that the restaurant needed more of her attention she quit her job to work full-time at Catfish Corner.

ate last year architect and artist Yve Hopen had the idea to revitalize downtown Trinidad, Texas - an town that, with the exception of a few small shops , had been largely neglected for decades. She saw the potential in a 100 year old brick shell of a former grocery store that had been abandoned over 40 years, and turned it into a vibrant and successful restaurant and bar - The WhistleStop

truck. They’ve been told that a fun little dance party has been known to break out on occasion!

The WhistleStop has created a warm and inviting gathering place for locals and visitors alike. A go to for all special occasions. It’s dedication to their customers, their commitment to quality food and great service, their enthusiasm for the city of Trinidad is bringing this small Texas gem of a city back to life.

Through her determination and hard work, from designing the building and interiors to personally painting the street side and courtyard murals, she has turned this “diamond in the rough“ into a combination country rustic and city cool gem. The 7500 square feet space now houses a main dining room that seats 96, a private party room for 24 and an inviting outside courtyard that was given an award by the Cedar Creek Garden Club.

The WhistleStop serves Lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday and their popular Brunch is served Sunday.

The WhistleStop is the only restaurant in the Cedar Creek Lake community to have both a resident sommelier and classically trained executive chef.

Sommelier Darren Dittrich oversees the wine selection and pairings and says “ I think a lot of people are intimidated by wine and my goal is to make wine selection approachable, affordable and fun! “ Executive chef Hector Delgado comes to the WhistleStop with an impressive resume having trained at the Universidad del Valle de Mexico and the Kendall Culinary school in Chicago. He’s worked with such chefs as Mikel Alonzo, Xavi Stone and Kamilla Siedler.

Delgado’s menu features American cuisine made with the finest quality, locally sourced when possible, ingredients with a range of selections from down-home chicken fried steak to cranberry and red wine filet mignon. In addition to their regular menu, and the Chef’s nightly specials the Whistlestop hosts a $15 Family Night menu every Wednesday, offering a variety of items including burgers, flatbreads, pasta and Asian options.

The Sunday brunch menu features favorites like brisket eggs Benedict and chicken and waffles.

The “Wet Your Whistle Bar” located in the main dining room is a warm and friendly place to enjoy a drink with family, friends or co workers, in addition to a full bar offering all the classics it has a festive signature cocktails menu designed by their talented mixologists. It also carries an impressive selection of hard to find whiskeys, bourbons and tequilas that are sure to please.

T

he Staff and Board of Directors of the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce wish to thank all involved in making 2023 a banner year for your chamber of commerce. The volunteers, sponsors, friends, visitors to our community, all played a part in further solidifying our membership and our mission. We’re boasting a record number of new members and a high rate of success with our fundraising efforts.

Established in 2001, the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce proudly serves as a strong source of support for the Cedar Creek Lake community, with the focus on growing the business community and keeping it strong. The original purpose of the chamber was to unify three existing chambers of commerce, closely aligned in proximity to one another and all serving the lake area. Due to the popularity of the concept in our various lake area cities, we immediately had six chapters of the chamber. The organization has always been volunteer-driven, with a small staff to operate the office. As the years passed, some of our chapters combined so that now, the one chamber oversees three chapters representing Gun Barrel City, Mabank and Tool/Seven Points/Kemp. We also have an “At Large” category of membership with members from the entire area, including Dallas and Tyler. We are now governed by a 9- member board of directors and a small staff of President, PT Office Manager, PT Member Services.

Our annual Creek Lake Car Show & Mabank Athletic Booster Club Crawfish Boil in May started as a smallish event with Cedar Creek Lake Kiwanis Club and the chamber partnering for cars and crawfish. We had around 65 cars and over the years, the show has grown to 185 entries at its largest, with thousands of local folks coming out for a day of cars/trucks/ motorcycles, crawfish, burgers, antique tractors, and other family fun. Our crawfish partner has changed from the Kiwanis Club, who now assists the chamber with the Car Show, to the Mabank Athletic Booster Club, who serves up the crawfish. We’ve always been blessed with outstanding partnerships in the community. The Car Show & Crawfish Boil is always the first Saturday of May. We’re proud to announce that we’ve actively returned to a routine with an old partner, KCKL 95.9 FM radio. Look for a chamber representative the third Wednesday of every month in the 7:30 a.m. slot of The Morning Sizzle on Facebook. We’ll be bringing an update on local events and chamber programs.

The 2023 Red Hot “18” Golf Tournament fundraiser is now the last Monday in September and is held at member golf courses in the area.

Selection is made each year through a bid process. Watch for details to be announced in mid-2024.

Leadership Cedar Creek Lake starts in September and runs through May.

This program gives participants basic knowledge in various topics such as city and county government, economic development, utilities, education, etc. There’s a fee to participate and applications generally start in July.

The chamber staff and board of directors are proud of any small part we play in assisting our members by offering free or low-priced advertising opportunities such as our e-blasts and Facebook shares. It’s the goal of the staff and board of directors to make every effort to offer real value to our members in exchange for their membership investment. We continue to add networking opportunities, the most recent being Early Bird Coffee Connection at the Hub office.

un Barrel City was incorporated in 1969, soon after the completion of Cedar Creek Lake. Gun Barrel City is now the second-largest city in Henderson County. Gun Barrel City’s motto, “We shoot straight with you,” might harken back to the Wild West, but Gun Barrel City takes its name from the former road, Gun Barrel Lane, which is now State Highway 198 and runs “straight as a gun barrel.”

The community grew quickly after incorporation, moving from 60 residents to its current population of over 6,300 residents. The first city council meeting was held on June 17, 1969, in the home of Mayor Roscoe Welch, for whom Welch Lane is named. Council meetings continued to be held in the mayor and council members’ homes until the construction of the first City Hall which was completed February 23, 1970.

The city’s slogan, “We Shoot Straight With You,” was created by resident Jim Malone in 1975. As part of the competition, Malone won $50. Other honorable mentions were “Happiness is living in Gun Barrel City” and “City of Square Shooters.” As part of Gun Barrel City’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2019, Gun Barrel City hosted an Open House and awarded Malone a key to the city and a certificate of recognition.

Gun Barrel City has received several state awards, including the Go Texan Award for becoming a Certified Retirement Community in 2009. Gun Barrel City holds two festivals each year, July Fest and its Concert in the

ocated at the crossing of U.S. Highway 175 and State Highway 198, Mabank is home to the largest school district on the lake and a highly developed park and youth recreational facility that hosts baseball, softball and soccer year-round, as well as a quaint shopping area on Market Street that offers something for everyone along the downtown area’s former main drag.

Mabank was first settled by Lorenzo D. Stover in 1846 but other settlers soon moved to the area to begin its growth.

When the area was purchased by John R. Jones in 1887, he named the area “Lawn City,” after a popular cotton dress material he sold. He later changed the name to Lawndale around November 1887 after the creation of the town’s first post office. When the Southern Pacific Railroad went through the area, it was bypassed one mile by G.W. or ‘Dodge’ Mason and Thomas Eubank, owners of the Mason-Eubank Ranch, who quickly decided to name the one-mile-square area past Lawndale as Mabank. Because of the popular railroad and fertile soil, the businesses and residents of Lawndale believed it was time to give up their area and add it to Mabank not long after.

In August 1900, the founders established the Mabank Land Company to sell land in the area. An ambulance service began to operate in the community and the Eubank Funeral Home opened in 1904. In 1909, the Mabank Banner newspaper was created and began to inform the community about area news.

In 1910, Mabank had only 412 residents populating the area.

Now, Mabank has 4,398 residents. As one of the older and larger cities located on the northeastern edge of Cedar Creek Lake, the city of Mabank continues to expand. Its Tri-County

Library located downtown serves Henderson, Kaufman and Van Zandt County residents.

The city has a large Brookshire’s grocery store and offers delicious restaurants such as Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, BnR Country, WingBoss and Big Deal Burger. Also, the three-story Quality Suites hotel offers plenty of space for Dallas-Fort Worth visitors. Don’t forget Sugar Acres Fruit Stand, which has local fruits and vegetables including fresh-shelled peas when in season, honey and lots of jar goods, plus plants, vegetable plants and herbs. An Atwoods Ranch & Home store accommodates shopping needs, both big and small in the area.

The Mabank Independent School District boasts three elementary schools: Central Elementary, Southside Elementary and Lakeview Elementary, as well as Mabank Intermediate School, Mabank Junior High School and Mabank High School, all of which offer top education programs for any student.

KEMP Easy Livin’

emp, located at the northern end of Cedar Creek Lake, about 50 miles away from Dallas, is a mix of its older Main Street area, which underwent a revitalization project in the summer of 2022, and more modern facilities along State Highway 274.

In the spring, the city boasts beautiful bluebonnets that bring in fields of visitors hoping to get the perfect family photo. In April, the residents of Kemp come together to celebrate the Wildflower Festival, which hosts live entertainment, vendors and plenty of old-fashioned fun.

Homecoming happens every four years in Kemp when those who’ve gone through Kemp schools come back together to remember their beloved hometown.

Kemp was named for Malvina Kemp Watkins, wife of John Marr Watkins, the first postmaster, and was officially established when the post office opened in 1851. Kemp has an expansive city park that is the site of community events and other gatherings, along with the nearby site of the Kemp Calaboose, the old city jail that once housed Bonnie Parker of Bonnie and Clyde fame. The city park’s fountain, which was a Great Depression work project, has been revitalized to its former glory.

Kemp’s growth took off after the Civil War when an increasing number of settlers moved to the community. In 1870, Dr. A. J. Still, hoping to profit from this expansion and the possible construction of a railroad through the area, bought land just north of the community. After surveying, Still divided the tract into lots, platted it and persuaded the directors of the railroad to lay tracks across his property by offering the company several of those lots. Another early settler, Sam Parmalee,

followed suit and offered the rail company right-of-way through his property. The mid-1880s witnessed the completion of the rail line through the community, the construction of a depot there, and the designation of Kemp as a terminal on the line.

The railroad contributed much to Kemp’s history but was taken up in the late 20th century as the busy U.S. Highway 175 was expanded to provide a link to the area with the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Now home to 1,251 people, the town includes an up-to-date Kemp High School and its adjacent Yellowjacket Stadium, which received new artificial football field turf and a track resurfacing in the summer of 2022. Nearby, Beacon Hill at Cedar Creek Lake offers waterfront homes in its masterplanned community. Your banking needs can be served at the modern offices of First National Bank of Kemp, and a new CEFCO gas station and convenience store began serving customers in the fall.

Kemp also has a Spring Market for hometown grocery shopping, along with several salons, shops along downtown’s Main Street, a bakery and a flower shop, as well as a variety of fast-food and sit-down restaurants, along with the new Dollar Tree/Family Dollar which opened this year.

Kemp has two senior care facilities offering services and jobs to the community, along with a longtime local dentist, Dr. Thomas Anderson. Kemp always has something blooming for those that want to stop by and visit the historic small town.

MALAKOFF

Enhancing Life, Enriching Communities.

M

alakoff, located at the southern end of Cedar Creek Lake, took its name from a Russian fortification that was in the news during the Crimean War in 1854. The community had applied for a post office under the suggested name of Mitcham or Purdon, but those names had previously been used, so officials in Washington, D.C. suggested the name, Malakoff. It was incorporated in 1948.

Malakoff has seen many changes since 1854. Thomas Bartlett of the Malakoff Pressed Brick Company (founded in the latter 19th century) changed the brick-making industry when he made a white brick in 1904 which he took to the World’s Fair in St. Louis and won a blue ribbon. When he came home, he began producing specialty bricks in all kinds of colors.

Malakoff gained prominence for the nearby gravel pit discovery of three large carved heads in the 1920s and 1930s, proclaimed by contemporary archeologists as prehistoric, known collectively as the “Malakoff Man.” Those heads are now on display at the Pearce Museum at Navarro College in Corsicana.

The town was home to lignite coal mines, which later supplied fuel to the nearby Texas Power & Light (TP&L) electric plant in Trinidad from the 1920s to the 1940s. Between 1920 and 1940, the town’s population grew rapidly. In Oct. 1942, TP&L decided to convert its generator to natural gas. The Malakoff Fuel Company began laying off employees soon thereafter and closed its operations in 1945. Not until the Tarrant County Water Board began constructing nearby Cedar Creek Page 48

Reservoir in the 1960s did it begin to grow again.

According to the latest U.S. Census estimate, Malakoff has a population of 2,219 people. The recent growth has offered several wedding destinations and event venues, restaurants, a modern gym, a health food store, flower shops, a bookstore, boutique specialty stores, a coffee shop, antique stores, an art gallery, dance and tumbling, a daiquiri shop, gift shops, a home décor store, a bed and breakfast, a community center, banks, auto services, a lumber yard, a nursery, a community library, a grocery store, a liquor store, pet grooming and insurance, with more businesses coming to Malakoff.

The newest culinary star is Simple Thymes Eatery in downtown. The restaurant serves gourmet food in a beautiful, casual setting.

The town also hosts an annual Cornbread Festival in the fall.

Students and teachers at Malakoff ISD’s Malakoff Elementary earned national Blue Ribbon School status in 2015, which recognizes high student achievement. The high school has also been known for its many award-winning programs and college preparatory plan. District leaders broke ground on a new high school in May 2022, as part of a districtwide $72 million package of improvements.

FISHERMAN’S WHARF MARINA & CAMPGROUND Relaxing recreation, lakeside living...and more

F

isherman’s Wharf Marina & Campground north of Malakoff has been revitalized over the past three years into a premier recreation and living spot along the southern shores of Cedar Creek Lake.

Fisherman’s Wharf has a beautiful view of Cedar Creek Lake beyond its harbor and private peninsula.

Welcoming visitors is Fisherman’s Wharf Manager Trina Chapa, who says some RVers decide to become longterm residents because “they love it so much that they stay, because it’s peaceful, it’s quiet, you wake up in the morning and you see deer walking across the lawn. You see ducks, squirrels, red fox… you see it all. It’s interesting.”

Others who camp, fish or shop also yearn to come back, Chapa shares. The marina offers non-ethanol gas and has 16 boat slips, while the store stocks items ranging from bait, tackle, packaged food and other sundries necessary for your stay, including bug spray, swimwear and T-shirts, and toys for Page 56

children (“just a little bit of everything,” according to Chapa).

Fisherman’s Wharf also has kayak and boat rentals, as well as dry storage for your boats or trailers along with moveable picnic benches placed throughout the property. There’s even a basketball goal for another recreational opportunity.

There are nine RV hookups on concrete pads that offer water, electricity and septic, along with 17 RV and tent sites that are on the lake, with water, electricity and a dump site provided.

In addition, there are 10 cabins and a tiny house. Those are available to rent nightly, weekends, weekly or monthly. Some of the cabins have open-wood interiors and a more rustic feel, Chapa says, while other cabins are finished out with sheetrock inside.

Visitors have access to the lake for swimming or fishing, or you can launch your boat. Areas are secured by locking gates and the property is monitored with cameras, with Chapa living onsite “so I can see people as they come and go,” the

manager says, ensuring protection of property.

More improvements are in the works, Chapa states, including a retaining wall along the peninsula and a new boat launch, which can also allow jet ski access to Cedar Creek Lake. Also in the future, the marina store is planned to be rebuilt, Chapa says.

Fisherman’s Wharf has a lot of history, Chapa says. The manager relates that many visitors recollect that they caught their first fish at Fisherman’s Wharf. Visitors to Cedar Creek Lake are urged to come make more memories.

EUSTACE

Small Town with a BIG Town Heart

E

ustace, with an estimated population of 1,020, had its birth along the Texas and New Orleans Railroad when the line connected its route from Kemp to Athens in 1900. Businesses from several surrounding communities relocated to take advantage of the new railroad.

The town’s original name of Moseley came from W. L. Moseley, who sold the railroad and its right-of-way and offered lots within the town’s confines. The name “Eustace” came later, honoring Capt. W. T. Eustace, a Confederate veteran who relocated from Virginia to Henderson County in 1867.

The City of Eustace boasts on its website, “Sometimes, nothing beats good, old-fashioned conversation with other human beings, so if you need something you cannot find on this site, don’t hesitate to call or drop by Eustace City Hall. We are always happy to help.”

Situated between Mabank and Athens on U.S. Highway 175, Eustace takes pride in its historic Town Square and original pioneer cabin, which was built by the Moseley family. The center for its gatherings and historical charm, the lusciously landscaped courtyard hosts Eustace’s historic Pioneer Day in September and the semi-annual Parade of Lights Christmas Celebration, which includes Christmas on the Square. The town also holds a Halloween Trunk or Treat event.

Only three miles north of town is Purtis Creek State Park, which provides visitors with camping facilities, fishing piers and champion-size black bass fish, as well as the chance to take in the great outdoors. Eustace also is home to First Class Barber College, where aspiring students can get training for state licensing exams in a state-of-the-art facility.

even Points is the first lakefront city coming from Dallas-Fort Worth, giving it gateway status.

The U.S. Census Bureau 2020 data figures a population of 1,557. Seven Points gets its name from the unique convergence of seven highways and roads - State Highways 334 and 274, Farm to Market Road 85 and Pritchett, Kelly and Veterans lanes and is located in northwestern Henderson County adjacent to Cedar Creek Lake.

The city, which was incorporated in the 1970s, has also grown a reputation for fun, with family gatherings featuring Whatz-Up Family Fun Park, a family entertainment park that features a water park. Cedar Creek Brewery is a popular spot, as is the busy Dairy Queen, a Texas tradition.

Not only does Seven Points have plenty of perfect swimming and fishing holes, it boasts a new city park with playground equipment that includes a handicap-accessible swing, park benches and a pavilion. The town also has RV parks to host travelers who might stay a spell, as well as Causeway Marina, Big Daddy’s Flea Market, Linn Realty, Vernon’s Lakeside restaurant and Daiquiri Daze.

avid Westerfield and Thomas-Andreas K Weigl have created an unforgettable nightspot at the new WAVES by W456. The upscale lounge now features a piano bar with live entertainment by Seth Thomas. Seth is a classically trained artist with a repertoire that includes music that spans

decades.

He can instantly switch from Broadway show tunes to gospel, from romantic love songs to upbeat dance music. Seth excels at getting his audience involved, soliciting requests and encouraging performances and even a singalong on occasion. You just never know where the night may take you, but it is always fun and an unforgettable experience. Seth is there Thursdays and Saturdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

From the moment you walk into the door, you are treated to the many facets of the sea, courtesy of Thomas and his wild creativity coupled with David’s touch of elegance in everything he does. Each seating area is a vignette, a carefully crafted “room” to showcase a part of the mystery of the sea.

From “the Pirate’s Cove” you experience sailing the seas complete with pictures of sailing ships and other memorabilia. The “Sirens Revisited” is set to enchant and capture your imagination as you conjure images of helpless sailors entranced by the beauty and song.

“The Abyss” showcases the depth and hidden treasures of the sea with a gorgeous work of art that makes you feel as if you are spinning into the depths. Each of the art works created by Thomas features crystals sewn into the canvas by hand, each one placed lovingly to create a seascape unique and breathtaking.

“The Delaware” gives a bit of history with a print of Washington’s famous crossing along with historical documents of importance and a picture of Thomas from the day he became an American citizen.

“The Harbor” and “The Blue Lagoon” add their own ambiance with custom seating and artwork chosen specifically to convey the theme of calm and protection, including a rather famous piece of Jesus calming the Sea of Galilee for his disciples.

Stranded beauty mimics a deserted isle complete with

an exquisite piece of artwork done by Thomas featuring a beautiful woman on a beach studded with hundreds of crystals hand-sewn into the canvas, complete right down to the latest detail of her parasol and lone pearl earring.

The woman who was the inspiration for the piece is family friend Marcella Ranieri, international model, dancer and choreographer. The art is framed by a sculpted piece with driftwood, twisted vines and treasures from the sea.

Up a few steps and you enter a world dedicated to famous ships which of course includes Titanic whose story has long been a fascination for Thomas. The displays include china, replicas of all three pattens used on the ship, photos and other memorabilia, including a documented piece of railing as well as other pieces from the ship itself. There is even a replica of the ship and of course, the iceberg.

The second ship featured is the Queen Elizabeth II (QE2) which gives homage to the rumors of hauntings on the ship which now sits permanently docked in the new marina at Dubai’s Port Rashid in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The area features seating with a magnificent “haunted chandelier” which has pieces of china, glassware and other items that mysteriously begin moving.

Finish off your tour with the Emerald Isle an area reminiscent of Ireland rich and elegant with leather furniture, antiques and includes an award-winning piano crafted by the Aucher brothers in the 1800s. The garden continues the theme with a visit to the Islands with varied group seating options out in the open to enjoy the fall weather or under the newly constructed pavilion. Every area is unique with tropical plants, some in perfect bloom and specially curated art pieces from far away.

raveling in an RV is a popular pastime that reached new heights during the pandemic. Though some of that enthusiasm has waned since the world reopened to travel, RV trips remain a very popular prospect across the United States and Canada.

According to the RV Industry Association’s April 2023 survey of manufacturers, total RV shipments ended the month with 31,216 units and 109,616 total shipments as of April 2023. Travel Trailers - 5th wheel and Mini (Type C) campers topped the list of consumer preferences for towable and motorhome categories. ÒRV ownership remains one of the most economical ways for consumers to travel while also maintaining control over their costs, which is more important than ever for consumers right now, indicated RV Industry Association President & CEO Craig Kirby.

Some people may be new to the RV lifestyle and are interested in learning how to maximize the time spent on RV trips across the nation. Following these guidelines can make for exciting adventures.

Plan the route Many scenic roadways traverse the country, and all of them may seem like great places to embark on RV adventures.

However, according to Crossroads Trailers, not all roads, bridges and tunnels are RV-friendly. You must pay attention to overhead clearance or narrow lanes that may limit large motorhomes and RVs. It’s important to know the height of the RV so you can determine which roadways feature low-clearance bridges that should be avoided.

Level your RV Before filling your freshwater tank, it’s important to have your RV on a level surface to ensure you are getting a full tank of water to use for all of your trip needs. Similarly, consider replacing the showerhead in the RV with a water-saving model to help conserve water.

Practice driving your RV before heading out on the open road. Driving the RV too fast also may put you in danger of a tire blowout, and making turns too abruptly can potentially flip the RV over.

Plan for stops One of the benefits of RV travel is that you can take time with your trip. Make as many stops as you like along the way, taking advantage of opportunities to refuel and rest. TRINIDAD

T

Trinidad is in western Henderson County along the Trinity River, with which the city has a close, historical relationship. With a population of 875, many know Trinidad for the soaring State Highway 31 bridge over the waterway, which was built in the early 1970s in hopes of making the river a navigable canal to Dallas.

Settlement around Trinidad started before 1840, when O. M. Airheart ran the local ferry across the river. Zach Smith also operated a ferry four miles north of the present townsite.

By 1844, the town recorded a general store and a saloon. It became known as Trinity Switch, named for its location on the Trinity River, when it became a station on the St. Louis Southwestern Railway also known as “The Cotton Belt Route” in 1880.

When residents applied for a post office in 1880, the name Trinidad was chosen instead of Trinity Switch to avoid duplication with another post office with the same name.

Records suggest, however, that the Trinidad post office was not actually opened until 1891.

The sleepy river town had a major change in the 1920s when Texas Power & Light (TP&L) built a lignite coal-fired power plant just south

of town. Luminant owns the plant now, generating 244 megawatts of energy with its 1965-era natural gas-fired plant, which is enough to power about 49,000 homes in periods of peak demand.

The power plant had a community gathering spot along its cooling lake and had housing for its workers. The area thrived and Lone Star Gas also built a facility in Trinidad, which still operates under Enbridge Energy.

Nipak Inc., which produced fertilizer, opened in the 1960s across the river in Navarro County and was a major employer and contributor to Trinidad’s history.

Trinidad is known for its close-knit community and spirited homecoming activities centered around its red-brick school, the original portion of which was built in the 1920s. The Trinidad Trojans boast the only state football championship for a Henderson County school, winning the 1998 six-man title, finishing off a perfect 15-0 State championship season by beating 12 of their opponents by the 45-point mercy rule.

nytime you come to Lakeside Collision Center or RPM Auto Enhancements, both co-located in Mabank, ask Rylan McClaskey about his illustrious car racing career. Rylan owns RPM and his father, Marc McClaskey, owns Lakeside Collision.

“As long as I can remember, dad’s been into cars,” Rylan says of Marc.

Lakeside Collision Center has more than 80 years of combined professional experience to do auto body repair, frame repair and automotive painting. Lakeside is located at 1508 S. Third St. in Mabank and can be reached at (903) 8876740.

RPM Auto Enhancements does window tinting, glass replacement, rock chip repairs and ADAS calibrations (the advanced driver assistance system that handles features such as lane assist and adaptive cruise control) that might be needed because of incidents such as collisions.

RPM Auto Enhancements, which opened for business in early 2023, is also located at 1508 S. Third St. in Mabank and can be reached at (903) 802-1534. Rylan wants to eventually get into car accessories with RPM, such as lift kits as well as Ranch Hand bumpers and running steps.

The McClaskeys now have two race cars. One runs in what’s called no-time racing (“an eighth of a mile, whoever can get there the fastest the first,” the only rule is using a certainsized tire, according to Rylan). That car often runs at Xtreme

Raceway Park in Ferris and Texas Motorplex near Ennis.

“It is a 2002 Camaro with a 903 cubic-inch motor and a lot of Nitrous,” Rylan explains.

The McClaskeys still have their 1967 Camaro, which has a 588 cubic-inch motor and also runs Nitrous and competes in Ultra Street racing. That car was taken to South Georgia Motorsports Park to race Battle of the Thrones and No Mercy in October.

In 2022, Rylan McClaskey was nominated to Drag Illustrated magazine’s “30 under 30,” which is 30 drivers under 30 years old who are considered to be the best drivers in the world, he says. Rylan graduated from Eustace High School in 2018.

“When I was 7 years old, I started racing junior dragsters and I’ve been hooked ever since then,” Rylan says. Last year, for the Radial Outlaws Racing Series, Rylan finished top 10 in points out of about 30 drivers.

“The best advice I could give somebody that would be interested in wanting to drive at the level of cars that I’m driving now, is to go to the track and ask questions and watch what people are doing,” Rylan says. “If you’ve never raced before, get a fast street car,” continues Rylan, who suggests taking that car to the track and testing things out. “Get the gist of how things work and you can start stepping it up from there.”

Prospective and current racers need somebody in their corner who has been racing a long time who can give tips, Rylan says.

“Even to this day I get advice from people on what to do, from people that have been doing it three times as long as I have,” Rylan shares.

armers’ Almanac says this Texas winter will be colder than normal, so remember that Groom & Sons’ Home Center’s Mabank location is a one-stop shop for all the winterizing needs for your home and most anything outside. They even have cold-weather gear and hunting items, too.

Sherry Weaver, who handles contractor sales for Groom & Sons’ at Mabank, says the store has heaters of all kinds for deer blinds, your homes “and all points in between.” Groom & Sons’ also has cold-weather gear, including jackets and bib overalls “when you’re working outside or doing your hunting excursions,” Weaver says.

There are propane heaters and electric heaters that are portable, “lots of heaters for whatever needs you might have,” Sherry says. In addition, Groom & Sons’ has patio heaters. “If you want to entertain outside, on the patio, you can fire one of

those babies up, and they work really good for a pretty large area,” Weaver says. “And we have propane to supply the power, as well.” In addition, Groom & Sons’ sells fire pits that can be used with those outdoor heaters.

Groom & Sons’ helps you take care of animals, too, offering brooder lamps for places like chicken coops and well houses, and for livestock. You can buy such lamps with a safety mechanism to keep animals from getting too close and being burned.

Another winterizing good is heat tape, which is beneficial for water lines, well houses or washing machines. Also, there’s the Thermo Cube electrical outlet, which has dual plugs that are climate-controlled, meaning when a Thermo Cube is plugged in outside, it will turn on or off, depending on the temperature.

“So you don’t have to worry about your chicken coop or your well house, you put one of these in there, plug your heating device in – your heater, whatever – and this will turn it on or off for you,” Weaver says. “I have a couple of these, and they work wonderful.”

What Weaver says is a “very important and probably the most popular” winterizing item are faucet covers and sleeves, which are also called socks. If you have tall or small hydrants, Groom & Sons’ can keep you covered with different sizes to wrap them.

Prepared for the high demand for those items, there are cases of faucet covers and socks stacked deep at Groom & Son’s.

“We always try to stay ahead of the game,” Weaver says.

For winterizing around the home, such as windows or patio doors, and to avoid air leaks and drafts, you can cover that up by visiting Groom & Sons’ weatherstripping aisle, which includes items such as air conditioner weather-sealing, door sweeps, under-door seals and weatherstrip cement. There’s also window air conditioner covers, window insulation kits, spray foam insulation (which can also block pests) and caulking from Groom & Sons’ of various sizes, types and thicknesses.

Moreover, there’s antifreeze for RVs, your pool or your boat,

which should be run through all your pipes and poured down drains for these items that use water. “There’s a lot of different applications,” Weaver says. To keep fuel from freezing, there’s STA-BIL brand fuel stabilizer available, also.

Something else a lot of people don’t think about is weatherproofing your pressure washer, which also uses water. Groom & Sons’ has a product just for that. “When you’re putting up your pressure washer for the winter, you need to winterize it, because if you don’t, it could freeze or crack,” Weaver says.

“It’s very inexpensive insurance.”

Sustainable Growth Through Integrity

W

ith a population of 2,335, Tool is bisected by State Highway 274 on the western edge of Cedar Creek Lake and has about 14.5 miles of shoreline. Not only does this Henderson County town boast a thriving, historical congregation of churches, but this beautiful lake area also has residential subdivisions that offer majestic views, ideal fishing atmospheres, relaxing ambiance and breathtaking sunsets.

Tool also offers an exceptional school system, affordable living and proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Tool is a bedroom community of well-dispersed citizens in its numerous lakeside subdivisions. Each addition offers its own special views of the lake and quiet country neighborhoods, some with their own boat launches, as well as the public Lone Star Marina. The local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary also is based in Tool and assists boaters on Cedar Creek Lake.

The Tool area was settled by planters during the mid-1850s.

Named after George Tool, who owned and cultivated the land in the area from 1860 to 1920, the business community was driven by the cotton industry, which grew to 100 in 1940 but by 1957, had dwindled to just one store – the Cecil Young Grocery and Gas Station. The construction of Cedar Creek Lake in the 1960s sent the city into the spotlight again and it celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2019.

The City of Tool has made many strides in recent years to continue to improve life for its citizens, including completing a comprehensive plan to improve roads and signage. A housing development for senior citizens has been added, a new park plans a future groundbreaking and improvements to municipal buildings are in the works.

Tool is proud of its Oran White Civic Center, where the city council meets and where many community activities are held.

The center was renovated inside and out in February, creating a beautiful space for the local residents to enjoy. The city is also planning a new “Eight at Tool” park which will feature many modern structures for the enrichment of the community, as well as visitors.

The city strongly supports the Tool Elementary School, part of Malakoff ISD, with volunteers and community involvement.

The elementary school was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in 2016 for its student achievement. The school is home to Miss Fran’s Garden, a cooperative educational facility operated in conjunction with the Cedar Creek Garden Club and named for longtime leader Fran Sonka.

egun as a resort community, Log Cabin offers a spacious lakeside city park and a wooded environment. The city park offers lake amenities to residents and visitors in Log Cabin, such as a boat ramp, boat dock, fishing, swimming, sunbathing, playground, outdoor grills and picnic

tables.

Known for its fishing tournaments that attract visitors from all around, Log Cabin is located just off State Highway 198 and Ranch to Market Road 3054 between Gun Barrel City and Malakoff and has 785 residents. Being on the deepest end of the lake, when lake levels are down, you can count on the city park boat ramp to be able to launch your boat. In 2022, the dock and ramp area, along with the fishing and swimming pier, was refurbished. The park office has bathrooms and showers for those staying in the park, which includes an RV area.

Those nearly year-round fishing tournaments include the KCKL 95.9 FM Big Bass Tournament which draws fishermen from several states away. The tournament, sponsored by a local radio station, started in the mid-1980s. Log Cabin’s history started in 1969, when a company called Areaco Inc. began developing the company’s second resort community after building the first in Missouri. It found the perfect spot along the shores of Cedar Creek Lake and called it Log Cabin Estates.

The original concept was to build a recreational resort, where people could get away from the city and take their families for

vacations and weekend getaways. Some lots were offered for sale and others became contractual memberships. Streets were named for figures from Texas, Native American and Western history.

Log Cabin Estates incorporated on January 17,1987 to become the City of Log Cabin. The city’s Red Barn is a community gathering place and holds annual events and family gatherings. Log Cabin is a tight-knit community and at Thanksgiving and Christmas, they hold a community dinner at the Red Barn where everyone brings food to share in the true spirit of the holidays. Birthplace Of Big Tex

erens, located along State Highway 31 just 14 miles east of Corsicana in Navarro County, was established in 1881 when the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, also known as the “Cotton Belt Route,” progressed through the county. Its namesake is Richard C. Kerens of St. Louis, a railroad executive. The railroad bypassed the nearby settlement of Wadeville, located south of the current town and soon after, all the businesses from Wadeville moved to the new community.

Kerens is known far and wide for Big Tex, but the statuesque icon actually started life as the world’s largest Santa Claus, developed by the local Chamber of Commerce to bring Christmas shoppers to the many businesses in the Kerens community.

Big Tex was built and erected by local citizens and even had its visage modeled on two Kerens residents. The attraction stood in the middle of Colket Avenue, Kerens’ main street, during 1948 and 1949. From there, he warmly welcomed holiday visitors. After two years, however, he was sold to the State Fair of Texas and became the Big Tex that is known and loved across the Lone Star State, as well as worldwide.

which takes place the third Saturday in October, drawing folks from near and far to enjoy a plethora of activities on the city’s red brick main street. The festival includes a photography contest, a carnival and quilt raffle, live entertainment, vendors, a chili cook-off, arts and crafts, food booths, children’s games and rides, along with many more activities.

Kerens still has close ties to cotton, but before mechanization, the cotton crop was gathered mostly by manual labor, culminating in months of hard work and worry about the crop coming in successfully for area farmers and their employees.

The festival recalls a time when people kicked up their feet (and heels) in celebration of a successful cotton crop.

Kerens, with a population of 1,519, is also known for its spirited homecoming activities, as well as its jewel of a Veterans Memorial that has its praises sung by sightseers.

Across the street is a Veterans Military Museum, containing artifacts of the city’s history of serving its country. The downtown main brick thoroughfare also hosts car shows that allow visitors to ogle over America’s engineering ingenuity.

edar Creek Cosmo opened Dec. 21, 2021 and hopes to be in their new location in time to celebrate the two-year anniversary. Owner Krystal Gilmore is a nurse practitioner with a passion for health and well-being.

She saw a need in the Cedar Creek Lake Area for a practice that provides health and beauty treatments in a comfortable, safe environment without travel to the Metroplex. Their vision is to provide health and beauty to the Cedar Creek area, to provide the most up to date procedures and products, while keeping a quaint, hometown feel. KAUFMAN We’re Growing Places

K

aufman, the seat of Kaufman County, has experienced explosive growth in the past decade while still retaining its rural roots. A bypass of State Highway 34 on the eastern edge of the city was completed in 2016. Kaufman County’s Pet Adoption Center run by the Humane Society of North Texas in 2022. Also opening that year was the new Kaufman County Justice Center, moving many county offices from the downtown courthouse, which was built in 1955.

Kaufman is the oldest community in the area of the Three Forks of the Trinity River that has been continuously inhabited.

The Three Forks (West Fork, Elm Fork and East Fork) region was known as a rich, fertile area that served as a Native American hunting ground and at the end of the 1830s and contained the largest Native American village east of the Brazos River.

Kaufman was first called “King’s Fort,” which was named after Dr. William P. King, who established the fort in 1840 as a protection for a group of surveyors. The community was later renamed as “Kingsborough” after five years of growth.

In 1851, the community was finally renamed Kaufman after it became the county seat. Kaufman County was named after U.S. Representative and noted Texas patriot David S. Kaufman.

educating more than 4,000 students and has been recognized multiple times by the Texas Education Agency. Those looking to continue their education can enroll at a local branch of Trinity Valley Community College, one of the most progressive two-year institutes in Texas offering a long list of training and education built around nursing and other medical technician fields.

One hidden gem of Kaufman is the Kaufman Poor Farm, a valuable tool to engage citizens in the farming heritage of the area. The farm, established in 1883, is believed to be the only one left in Texas that is still owned by the county. The property includes a stock pond, original buildings and an old jailhouse. It also has several examples of farm equipment that helped fuel the area’s agricultural economy. Kaufman is still surrounded by mini-ranches, working agricultural land and rural estate living.

Kaufman, which has plenty of room to build, has four-lane highway access to Dallas, allowing for a quick commute. Topgrowing industries around this community of 8,576 include manufacturing, construction and retail trade.

he Cedar Creek Lake Area excels in community spirit and never is it so evident as it is during the holiday time. Community members step up the outreach to those less fortunate and everywhere you look, people are thinking of others.

Home Instead Franchise Owner Kim Gassman said they are hoping to help 200 seniors this year with their “Be a Santa to a Senior” campaign. Angel trees for seniors are placed in The Monitor office, The Market Street Nest and the Cedar Creek Country Club with a senior’s wish list Nov. 1 through Dec 13.

Many area churches including Grace Community Church, First Baptist Church of Mabank, Malakoff Global Methodist Church and First Baptist Church of Gun Barrel City participate in Operation Christmas Child, packing decorated shoe boxes with gifts, hygiene items and treats for children in a foreign land. These children may never otherwise have an opportunity to open a gift on Christmas. Little things can mean so much.

The First Baptist Church in Eustace and St. Peter Lutheran Church have free Thanksgiving Dinners on Thanksgiving Day to not only feed hungry people, but offer fellowship and friendship to those who may be lonely.

Christian Life Center Church not only has a year-round food pantry but prepares baskets of food to deliver to families. They also adopt families and provide gifts including clothes and toys to put a smile on the faces of needy families.

Gun Barrel City Toys for Tots provides Christmas gifts for many area families and has expanded its reach year after year to provide joy for children at Christmastime.

The Kiwanis Club of Cedar Creek Lake gives Christmas baskets of food and delivers them to the needy.

First Presbyterian Church of Mabank and St. James on the Lake Episcopal Church both adopt families, giving food, clothing and gifts for the entire family.

Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church holds a Community Christmas Dinner every year early in December where they also distribute toys for children.

Many churches including Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church support other organizations who reach out such as Faith in Action in Malakoff who take care of our homeless population.

The American Legion Post 310 provides food and gift baskets for many.

In addition to these, many businesses host Angel Trees, where people can choose an angel to shop for, return the gift to the tree and they will be delivered.

The Cedar Creek Lake area abounds with tender hearts for others as we enter the holiday season. This is just a sampling of ways to share the Christmas spirit with others.

HUNTING SEASON TIPS

ate fall is when white-tail deer hunting season is in full swing, and Discover magazine asked Game Warden Mark Anderson, who is one of Henderson County’s game wardens through the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD).

“I always enjoy the opportunity to share our message and passion for the outdoors,” Anderson says.

General questions can be answered at the ease of a few finger taps, as Anderson suggests using the Texas Outdoor Annual App, the official app of Texas hunting, fishing and boating regulations offered free through TPWD. The app offers hunting and fishing news from TPWD, too.

“Some of our most common questions have to do with season dates and bag limits for hunting and fishing,” Anderson says. “All of this information can be found in the Outdoor Annual App or the printed version. We encourage people to become familiar with these documents as they contain lots of useful information. Having the proper license type and endorsements are also important.”

For those in the field or in a blind, the app lets you find hunting season dates and bag limits for your county, see seasons and bag limits for all game animals, review means and methods restrictions, find public hunting lands and apply for drawn hunts for mule deer, bighorn and other game.

For those on the water or on the shores, app users can see statewide bag and length limits, find exceptions to statewide limits by water body, find places to fish nearby and see tips for identifying bass and catfish.

As for licenses, stamps and permits, the app allows one to see types of licenses, permits and stamps available, find license retailers near you and look up your license purchase history and to purchase the licenses themselves.

Anderson also says that every hunter in Texas (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must

successfully complete hunter education. The minimum age for certification is 9 years old and the cost is $15.

TPWD’s webpage about hunter education certification says the certification is good for life and is honored by other states and Canadian provinces requiring hunter education. Certification proof (or a deferral) must be carried on your person.

How do you know if you qualify for a hunter education deferral? Any person 17 years of age or older who has not completed hunter education may defer completion for up to one year, TPWD says. A deferral may only be obtained once (and is available at license vendors for $10) and is only valid until the end of the current license year, the department explains.

You must be accompanied while hunting if you have a deferral.

So… what does “accompanied” mean? Accompanied means being with a person who is at least 17, who is licensed to hunt in Texas, who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and they must be within normal voice control.

To review, the game warden shares that if you were born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, and you are under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied. Age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete hunter education, OR you must be accompanied. And for age 17 and over, you must successfully complete hunter education; OR purchase a “Hunter Education Deferral,” and you must be accompanied.

Another unfortunate aspect of hunting season is those who don’t follow the rules. For that, there’s Operation Game Thief, which is Texas' Wildlife Crime-Stoppers Program, offering privately funded rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to the conviction of a wildlife crime.

An East Texas Jewel: Purtis Creek State Park A popular place for respite and recreation, with fishing, camping and more

P

urtis Creek State Park is a jewel of a recreation area located north of Eustace, along the Henderson-Van Zandt County line and just east of Cedar Creek Lake. The park has a new superintendent, David Fischer, who has headed the park since Jan. 2023.

The centerpiece of the park is its lake, which was impounded in 1985. Purtis Creek State Park is best known for its largemouth bass fishery. This species has been subject to a special catch-and-release-only rule since the lake opened to the public in 1988. Also, channel catfish are stocked annually and grow rapidly, providing an excellent fishery from both fishing piers. Crappie anglers frequently catch daily limits of these popular fish.

Purtis Creek’s 355-acre lake with a maximum depth of 30 feet is, of course, a bass fishing destination, but fishing is not all the park offers. You can come to swim, boat, paddle, camp, explore nature or relax. But this state park lake was designed specifically for fishing. Purtis Creek State Park Office Manager Suzanne Rowan says the lake was custom-made for Florida largemouth bass.

Much of the inundated timber is still standing in the upper half of the lake and in the back of most coves. Hydrilla was a problem in the past, but the park staff currently has this invasive plant under control, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department says.

Besides largemouth bass, Purtis Creek State Park offers fishing for catfish and crappie that you can take home. Purtis Creek has fishing piers, fish cleaning stations and boat ramps.

Overnight fishing costs $2 per person (if you are not camping); the permit expires at 6 a.m. You do not need a fishing license to fish at Purtis Creek State Park.

Unlike most Texas reservoirs, Purtis Creek shows its highest catch rates for really big largemouth bass in late summer.

Bass anglers have very good success using live goldfish from the west fishing pier. There’s also a good opportunity to catch sunfish.

Purtis Creek lends rods, reels and tackle boxes for use in the park. The park allows 50 motorized boats on the lake at a time, with an “idle only” speed limit and a no-wake policy.

You’ll find plenty to do at Purtis Creek State Park, besides fishing and boating. You can hike and bike, camp, geocache and picnic.

Interested parties can rent their picnic pavilion for your next gathering.

Also, one can bring their own kayak or canoe, or rent one of the park’s kayaks. Rentals, including paddles and lifejackets, are available at a self-service kiosk on a first-come, firstserved basis. For camping, you can choose from 59 campsites with water and electricity, five walk-in tent sites or 13 primitive hike-in sites.

Rowan says New Year's Eve is a big camping day and that the park is oftentimes full Thanksgiving week.

As for hiking and biking, tackle the 4.1-mile Wolfpen Hike and Bike Trail. The 1.7-mile Beaver Slide Nature Path takes you along the lakeshore. Or explore the short, easy Solar Trail along the dam.

In addition, the park store sells supplies, outdoor equipment, bait, gifts and ice. Purtis Creek also offers guided hikes, paddling basics classes, nature programs and more.

he past two summers have seen lots of heat but little rain, and the ensuing droughts have taken a big toll on trees around the Cedar Creek Lake area.

To get ahead of the curve on that one-two punch of two consecutive dry summers, lake-area residents can contact Charles McKee, a certified arborist (which requires continuing education, he says), who serves the Tri-County area and has been in business since Jan. 1986 with his McKee Tree Service.

McKee is fully insured, which means the company carries both contractor’s liability and occupational hazard insurance.

“It’s pretty important for consumers to actually check the insurance,” McKee states. To check whether the insurance is valid, ask for the insurance binder and call the listed company to make sure the policy is in force, McKee says.

Not all tree situations are the same, so it’s best to call an expert, McKee says. “It’s better to get a professional to look so you don’t cut a tree down that might’ve been salvageable, or leaving a tree that could’ve been a hazard,” according to McKee.

McKee Tree Service offers tree removal, as well as professional tree pruning and trimming to protect trees from decay and damage. Their trained technicians can remove sick, decaying tree branches before the disease spreads to other parts of the tree.

“If you’ve got a tree that’s green and is still alive and has a minimal amount of decay and isn’t over a structure or a power line, you have the luxury to wait and see,” McKee says. “If you’ve got a tree that looks like it has substantial decay and

No Tree Too Big offers tree removal, tree trimming, stump grinding and removal, branch and limb removal and more. Patrick Grogan is half-owner with Darron Grogan. Patrick has been working with trees all his life and started No Tree Too Big about seven years ago.

Patrick Grogan says if the bark’s falling off the tree or the leaves are turning yellow, or if the top limbs “are just falling out,” it may be time to call. Yellowing leaves that are obviously discolored compared to nearby greenery “means it’s (the tree) on the way downhill.”

But all is not necessarily lost, Patrick Grogan says. “I would feed it and try to save it. Feed it some Jobe’s Tree Spikes (which can work wonders, he says) and water it and give it a chance. Don’t cut it down unless it’s all the way dead.”

Patrick Grogan recommends not to water trees at the base but at the drip line, the point right at the edge of the tree’s canopy.

He also warns against topping out a tree or trimming big tree limbs until fall, to avoid hightemperature time, which would likely kill the tree.

“If you’re just wanting to raise the limbs off the house, you can do that, just raise the drip line up off the house, and take the weight out of the drip line, so the limbs don’t fall,” Patrick Grogan says. “They’re so brittle right now because of the heat, even the green limbs are falling apart. I would take some weight out of the green limbs, especially if they’re over your house, and don’t take great big limbs off the tree because it’ll kill the tree even faster.”

Ole Fashion Christmas in Mabank, Texas

he Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Mabank Chapter and the City of Mabank opens a nostalgic time capsule that transforms Market Street, which is just half a mile from US Highway 175, into an Ole Fashion Christmas. Dec. 8 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

Visitors will have the opportunity to stroll down a festive snowy street and have a cup of cider, hot chocolate, or both. Snow?

Yes! Snow. The city of Mabank puts snow machines on top of the downtown buildings during the festivities creating a light snowfall. So, no matter what the weather forecast may say it will be a snowy wonderland.

With the help of sponsors and donors, the entire event is free. Chairperson of the Ole Fashioned Christmas, Shannon Anderson said, “It is a magical night where everything is free for the children.”

The Ole Fashion Christmas begins with lighting the town’s Christmas tree. The ornaments on the tree are creations of the talented students in the Mabank Independent School District. The tree lighting takes place next to Elsie Mae and More Christmas store, the first place to stop and feel the spirit of Christmas before moving on to more shops and booths. Of course, the main man in red and white will be there to greet children of all ages so you will want to get out those cellphones or cameras and take pictures with Santa.

This year there will be face painting by Gypsydawn Rose, a hayride, hot dogs, holiday tattoos, and large games like Jenga and Connect Four, that the city of Mabank will be providing.

The newly renovated street features new railings along the side walks, street lighting, and handicapped access to shops. Music plays year-round from the outdoor sound system but during the Mabank Ole Fashion Christmas holiday music will put any Grinch in the spirit of the season. If you are still looking for that special gift for that hard-to-buy loved one then you will want to stop by the Community Room, next to the library, there will be vendor booths with all kinds of items to make any gift extra special.

Still hungry? Then you will want to stroll over to the Mabank Truck Yard, found at the east end of Market Street, and choose

from a variety of culinary specialties. There is a cost at the food trucks, but it will be well worth it to have your taste buds dance in delight.
