To our Valued Members and Community,

It’s been a wonderful year at Sherman Library & Gardens. As I reflect upon our recent accomplishments, a quote from Orange Coast Magazine sums up the many areas in which we serve the community. “Art classes, horticulture workshops, and historic documents abound at this corner oasis. Whether it’s your first time visiting or your 50th, you’ll find fresh displays and intriguing learning opportunities.”

The education program continues to drive Sherman Library & Gardens’ mission to provide people of all ages and backgrounds with an opportunity to engage and connect. We more than doubled the number of school field trips and increased drop-in tours, discovery tables, Fantastic Flora web updates, and scavenger hunts.

The library has brought the past alive through its growing collection of artwork and manuscripts. We partnered with Laguna Art Museum to showcase Sherman’s fine art collection in an exhibit titled Unseen Ties: The Visual Collection of Sherman Library & Gardens. This freed wall space to exhibit pieces from Sherman's newest donation — more than 90 paintings and artifacts by noted California artist Phil Dike.

Art also flourished as Sherman's amazing team of horticulturists produced striking botanical displays throughout the year. These set the stage for contemporary dance company Backhausdance to return to Sherman for a five-week residency, culminating in two magical evening performances. The project expanded from previous years to include a free performance for local school children. It was a moving experience to watch the expression on the children’s faces as they saw the art of dance come to life.

From signature events to social media impressions, Sherman is growing in so many ways. We hope you are proud of all Sherman has achieved. It takes every team member, volunteer, docent, and friend of the garden to create our impact in the community and to bring the beauty of history and horticulture to life through education, art, and meaningful experiences.

NEW VISITOR CENTER

To better serve the visiting public, Sherman debuted its Visitor Center in May. At a new admissions desk inside the Pacific Coast Highway entrance, guests can sign up for events and classes, purchase memberships, visit with the garden ambassador, and find a wealth of general information.

MEMBERSHIP UPGRADES

This year Sherman Library & Gardens debuted a new membership structure to cater to diverse audiences and membership preferences. The new program added levels for students, seniors, and families, and also debuted exclusive offerings for members of the Sherman Society.

LONG-SERVING DOCENTS

From tending garden beds to leading field trip tours, volunteers and docents are vital to the organization at Sherman Library & Gardens. More than 130 volunteers and 50 docents give their time and talent to the programs and events. Sherman recognizes a combined 12,500 hours of service and is grateful for their generous work to further Sherman’s mission within the community.

classes, field trips, and exhibits make Sherman Library & Gardens a living classroom for learners of all

ages

Education is the glue that binds Sherman Library & Gardens’ three pillars: history, horticulture, and the arts. In 2023 Sherman planted the seeds for lifelong learning with nearly 450 educational experiences serving more than 10,300 guests and members. The team forged new community partnerships including Master Gardeners of Orange County and the City of Newport Beach Arts Commission. Sherman also hosted lectures, plant shows, and diverse public programs geared toward students, families, and enthusiasts of plants and art.

FIELD NOTES

Sherman became a classroom for more than 1,600 second-, third-, and fourth-grade students who participated in the Habitat Explorers Field Trip program. The program delivers science-based student experiences designed to enhance STEM curricula. Sherman also awards transportation subsidies to improve access for schools from lowincome areas of Orange County.

SETTING THE STAGE

Last spring, Sherman Library & Gardens served as a vibrant backdrop for contemporary dance company Backhausdance. The partnership resulted in five weeks of rehearsals set among the trees and flowers, morning group dance sessions, and a free performance for school children. The residency culminated in an interactive twilight performance that led audiences through the garden beds to experience and experiment with contemporary dance firsthand.

BUDDING HORTICULTURISTS

Sherman Library & Gardens’ internship program welcomed four students to learn and work on projects alongside the horticulture team. At the conclusion of the summer, each student presented their contributions before the staff.

Dynamic displays, garden enhancements, and creative touches curate an exceptional experience for visitors

GARDENS GO DIGITAL

Sherman is now able to partner with other botanical institutions and assist with conservation of rare plants because of ongoing work to build a plant record database, IrisBG Collection Management. The team now has comprehensive inventories for the orchid, begonia, and bromeliad collections, and cataloging continues among Sherman’s many collections of flora.

Horticulture at Sherman Library & Gardens continues to be a vital part of creating a cultural destination within Corona Del Mar and the greater Orange County area. In addition to putting artistry on display every day at Sherman, the horticulture team led efforts in California conservation, innovated with technological tools, and implemented a new work structure that has resulted in a more designoriented, cost-conscious team.

CONSERVATION SPOTLIGHT: PRESERVATION IN THE WILD

Through grant funding, the Sherman horticulture team spearheaded an effort to conserve Calochortus, a rare California perennial bulb. The team identified and ethically collected seed from national forests. The specimens were shared with Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, San Luis Obispo Botancial Garden, and California Botanic Garden to ensure the preservation of the native plants.

LIFE IMITATES ART

Guests at Sherman’s art exhibits enjoyed a new experience with Sherman’s collections of art and flowers. At two fine art exhibitions, the horticulture team created impressive floral arrangements inspired by art on display. The arrangements showcased a new medium to expertly weave art with nature.

Creative visual displays and thoughtfully planned details delight guest in an enchanting garden setting

CREATURES OF THE NIGHT

Sherman's signature night of family-friendly spooks got a makeover and was rescheduled to take place in February. The gardens hosted birds of prey and creepy crawly visitors from the Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park set among carnivorous plant displays, night blooming botanicals, crafts, and a mystical bayou-themed apothecary of potent plants.

NIGHTS OF 1000 LIGHTS

The annual holiday celebration took on the theme Hooray for Hollywood! In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the iconic Hollywood sign, Sherman adopted the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown with red carpets, performers, themed photo ops, impressive garden displays, and an exhibit detailing the historic Hollywood Hills residential community. Sherman upheld the tradition of hosting Santa Claus for visits with guests and serving s’mores by the fire.

NEWPORT BEACH SUMMER GARDEN PARTY

The Newport Beach Summer Garden Party presented by Sherman Library & Gardens’ Volunteer Association and sponsored by South Coast Plaza raised more than $80,000 for vital education programs. Guests enjoyed garden-totable cuisine, a garden party hat contest, bouquet bar, raffle and silent auction, and live music by Dave Aguiar & The Garden Party Players. The event included a city proclamation recognizing Sherman Library & Gardens as the cultural hub of Corona del Mar.

SPRING GARDEN ART FAIRE

Sherman Library & Gardens’ Volunteer Association presented a Spring Garden Art Faire in May. Highlights included artists of diverse media creating and selling their work with a portion of proceeds from sales benefiting Sherman Library & Gardens. Guests participated in art classes, children’s crafts, and an interactive community art project now on display in the Visitor Center.

Plant enthusiasts flock to Sherman Library & Gardens to share ideas, find new specimen, and embrace community

This year Sherman Library & Gardens transformed into a hub for plant lovers of all kinds to gather for nine special plant shows. The shows draw crowds from plant societies from across the region, growers, and the general public. With programming including sales, demonstrations, and lectures, plant shows are an important component of Sherman’s work toward supporting education, conservation, and community-building.

Your support helps Sherman Library & Gardens deepen its roots in the community

In September 2022, Sherman Library & Gardens launched its campaign to Grow the Gardens. The campaign set a goal to complete our “new front door.” This project will increase visibility along Pacific Coast Highway, establish Sherman as a key cultural center, and expand capacity to provide educational programming in a dedicated community room.

Sherman Library & Gardens has been deeply rooted in Orange County for more than 50 years, serving the community as a sanctuary and educational beacon for horticulture, history, and art. It is the heart of Newport Beach and a gathering hub where the beauty of history flourishes and a renaissance is underway.

In order to invite and implement community feedback regarding its new campaign, Sherman Library & Gardens hosted a series of block parties for nearby neighbors, members, volunteers, and docents. The block parties were engaging events to share our hopes and dreams for the future of the organization. The feedback was positive and community excitement was energizing. 2023 Financial Report

Throughout the Fiscal Year 2023, Sherman Library & Gardens saw growing interest and engagement from the community. Sherman’s programs and events were widely sought after and enjoyed by many new and returning friends of the gardens. The following Operating Financial Report has been prepared for the Fiscal Year 2023, commencing October 1, 2022, and concluding September 30, 2023. Sherman Library & Gardens’ revenue and expenditures were managed prudently to not only provide operational maintenance, but to also expand the support to the surrounding communities. Revenue streams saw a steady increase in admissions, memberships, venue rentals, and donations. Sherman Library & Gardens is proud that 94% of expenses were focused on increasing program services to the benefit of the community. As Sherman Library & Gardens moves forward, it is focused on increasing membership, annual giving, planned giving and sponsorships. This growth in financial support is vital to allow for a sustainable and healthy operating budget that is in alignment with the growth of the educational programs, events and resources offered to the community.
