Heejae Hwang (11), the current secretary of Freedom Speakers International, is also excited about the new journey waiting ahead of him. Hearts Without Borders (HWB) will be focusing on supporting North Korean defectors and helping them transition to life in the South. Ever since both clubs planned to merge, Heejae says they’ve been wondering, “How can we lead the team to be most efficient?” Because both FSI and Hana Club had unique aspects and initiatives, the executives had to consider how they could work together despite some of the differences they had. According to Heejae, “a lot of the things that [the executives of HWB] decided on were based on consensus and we didn’t have any conflicts when we were planning for merging.” Now that these two distinct clubs are merging, the club executives are looking forward to creating more service opportunities.“Members will be working on different projects co-currently and I think that will be an expansion of our vision rather than something that detracts from our overall message,” concluded Heejae.
