OCTOBER 23, 2021

Overtime Elite opened its doors (and its brand-new, 100,3 square-o f ot a f cility in Midtown Atlanta) to the NBA o f r the rst time on Saturday o f r a pro day event that drew a full house of about 60 NBA scouts. Everyone a w s COVID-tested before entering the building. None of the visitors (which included a small pocket of media and this writer) knew exactly what to expect out of this—the majority of OTE’s prospects are two or three years from being draft-eligible, not all of them had lofty national reputations before signing on and, in this line of o w rk, there are always pro days that wind up dragging or disappointing. But scouts witnessed a tightly run, three-hour program that highlighted prospects efe f ctively and ended with about an hour of ofciated ve-on-ve scrimmaging. It ran like a college practice, with Ollie and his staff (which includes longtime DePaul coach Dave Leitao, among others) maintaining a brisk pace.

Team Synopsis:

Team Synopsis:

OTE: Team Fanning features a balanced nine-man rotation that figures to be headlined by former 2022 top ten recruit Amen Thompson. The 6-foot-6 guard tore it up at Overtime Elite’s Pro DaY ON OCTOBER 23RD, SHOWCASING SKILLS OF A FUTURE NBA PLAYER THOMPSON WILL have the assistance from three 6-foot-9 big men AND A COUPLE OF ULTRA-ATHELTIC GUARDS. Head coach Tim Fanning brings in plenty of experience after joining Overtime Elite in July of 2021. Fanning spent the past five years coaching at Maccabi Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague, LEAVING for OTE after winning four straight championships.

H/T OTEElite

THE STARS Thompson is considered to be a potential lottery pick, and the lack of other primary ball-handlers on the roster indicates that he will operate as the main playmaker in Fanning’s system. Blessed with elite length and athleticism, Thompson is extremely active on the defensive end of the floor, and he has the chance to turn into an elite stopper at the next level. His offensive skill-set is getting better daily, and the only aspect that is noticeably lacking from his game is a consistent jumpshot. That being said, Thompson used the OTE pro day to dispel any negative notions about his jumper, and many left with the takeover of him being one of the best overall prospects on the Overtime Elite roster.

THE BACKCOURT Thompson - who will be split from his identical twin Ausar - will be joined in the backcourt by 6-foot-5 TJ Clark, 6-foot-4 De’Vontes Cobbs, and 6-foot Johned Walker. Clark, an alumni of the Atlanta XPress, CLARK is known for his defensive acumen, and will be counted on to provide the dirty work for Fanning. Cobbs is known for his jaw-dropping athleticism, so it will be interesting to see how the OTE coaching staff refines his game AND TAPS INTO HIS POTENTIAL. Either way, COBBS brings similar energy to the table as Clark, and will be a menace defensively. Walker was a late signing to OTE but had a strong pro day and should play minutes off the bench. 6-foot-5 Francis “LeBron” Lopez IS CURRENTLY ON THE ROSTER BUT HAS YET TO MAKE HIS WAY TO THE STATES. Lopez is a highly-sought after international recruit and it will be exciting to follow his progression AFTER HIS ARRIVES.

THE FRONTCOURT There is a lot to like about Fanning’s frontcourt, starting with 5-star forward prospect Matt Bewley. The 6-foot-9 Bewley - also an identical twin TO BROTHER MATT - BEWLEY is starting to tap into his massive potential, and turning pro should do wonders for his overall development. Bewley is long and athletic, and offers up a unique level of versatility on the defensive end. Tyler Smith, a former member of the 2023 graduating class, gives Fanning another 5-star potential-lottery pick. Smith - a lefty with evolving perimeter skills - should see his development speed up under the OTE coaching staff. 2005-born Izan Almansa - a highly-touted prospect from Real Madrid Cadete of the Spanish league - will see major minutes in Fanning’s rotation, as will 6-foot-9 forward Kok Yat - who had a huge day at OTE’s pro day. The frontcourt goes five deep, and it will be interesting to see how they do on the boards as the majority of their forwards are perimeter-oriented.

Team Synopsis:

Team Synopsis:

Team Gomes is arguably the most-complete squad among the three, featuring a balanced 9-man rotation headlined by star guards Jazian Gortman and Jean Montero. Head coach Ryan Gomes - a 9-year NBA veteran and former coach in the NBA G-League - will have an athletic lineup at his disposal - one that features two high school underclassmen and three international players. GOMES’ COACHING AND PLAYING EXPERIENCE SHOULD BE INVALUABLE AS THEY Make THEIR WAY THROUGH OTE’S INAUGURAL SEASON.

H/T OTEElite

THE STAR(S) The aforementioned Gortman and Montero will handle the majority of the on-ball responsibilities for Team Gomes, which means they will likely play fast - and definitely flashy. Gortman exploded over the past calendar year, establishing himself as a top-10 recruit in the 2022 class before signing with OTE. The 6-foot-3 Montero has been playing professionally for nearly two years, and is receiving rave reviews after OTE’s PRO combine on October 22nd - including being called the ‘best player on the floor’ by ESPN’s DRAFT EXPERT Mike Schmitz. Both Montero and Gortman pair elite basketball SAVVINESS with blazing speed, qualities that should allow Team Gomes to deploy the same game-plan no matter who has the ball in his hands.

THE BACKCOURT Gortman and Montero will split point guard duties, while 6-foot-5 combo guard Lewis Duarte and 6-foot 2 Tudor Șomăcescu will be expected to provide major production. Duarte - one of the later-signings to OTE, gives Gomes a tough, physical guard that likes to play fast. Somacescu is a prized prospect from Romania, and he should provide a massive lift on the defensive end. Somacescu doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses in his game, and could find himself playing major minutes in the Gomes’ backcourt. National pundits such as Rivals’ Jamie Shaw are debating whether or not Gortman and Montero are the most exciting non-NBA backcourt duo, which means expectations are sky-high for the guards on Team Gomes.

THE FRONTCOURT Team Gomes has plenty of size in the Space front Court, featuring three forwards and two swingmEn. DominiCK Barlow will be one of the featured forwards, fresh off a terrific spring and summer with The Renaissance (NY) in the Nike EYBL. Barlow is a 6-foot-9 dual-forward, capable of impacting a box score without having a play called for him. His athleticism complements an elite motor, something that can also be said about Barlow’s frontcourt mate Jai Smith. A 6-foot-9 super-athlete with evolving Perimeter skills, Smith should impact in the rotation at the small forward through center positions. Smith - along with 6-foot-10 Alexandre Sarr - are the tallest members of the roster. Their continued improvement - especially on the defensive end of the floor - will be important for team Gomes’ success. Smith and Barlow are both capable of playing on the wing, and they’ll be joined by the final two members of the rotation, Nathan Missia-Dio and Malik Bowman. The 6-foot-8 Missia-Dio looks the part physically and has displayed guard-skills - a trait that should play nicely into the current Team Gomes’ personnel. Bowman was the youngest recruit on the roster by graduation class, and the 6-foot-7 prospect is oozing with both potential and versatility. While he may not play heavy minutes right away, he’s simply too talented not to MAKE AN IMPACT ON THE ROTATION.

Team Synopsis:

Team Synopsis:

Head coach Dave Leitao has to be excited about his nine-man group, one that features seven former top 100 prospects. Out of the three OTE teams, an argument can be made that Team Leitao is the most balanced - and also the biggest; six of the nine rotation players are 6-foot-6 or taller. The backcourt will be triggered by a guard trio in Bryce Griggs, Bryson Warren, and Ausar Thompson that is as good as any in the country. The biggest issue for this squad might be their lack of experience in comparison to the other OTE teams; Team Leitao features four former members of the 2023 graduating class.

H/T OTEElite

THE STAR(S) Griggs is a walking bucket, and it will be intriguing to see his progression as a professional. Many feel Griggs’ overall game is tailored for the professional game, and he will have the ball in his hands often. Griggs impressed for over 12 games for JL3 Elite (TX) in the Nike EYBL, averaging 17.5 points, 5.2 assists, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 steals. He has a chance to put up similar numbers for Team Leitao, and if he keeps up the passing production, he should be one of the top overall guards on Overtime Elite’S FULL ROSTER. The same can be said for Warren, a former 5-star prospect in the 2023 class. Warren blew up this spring for Nike EYBL powerhouse MOKAN Elite, parlaying his performance into one of the last major Overtime Elite signings.

THE BACKCOURT Each and every OTE player will benefit from the tutelage of program coach Kevin Ollie, but perhaps none more than Griggs, Warren, or the third star of the group - Ausar Thompson. A former 5-star prospect in the 2022 class - Thompson is the X-factor of the backcourt. Thompson is capable of impacting the game without having to touch the ball, and the 6-foot-6 wing should operate as the best overall defender on the roster. Coming off the bench receiving important minutes will be former ESPN Top 100 prospect Jaylen Martin, as well as scoring guard Emmanuel Maldonado.

THE FRONTCOURT 6-foot-9 Ryan Bewley - twin brother of Matt - will be a featured member of the frontcourt, as will fellow 6-foot-9 prospect Jalen Lewis. Bewley offers elite length and athleticism, and HIS EVOLUTION AS A BASKETBALL PLAYER should benefit greatly from HIS OTE PEERS AND COACHING STAFF. The same can be said for Lewis, as the former ESPN No. 2 prospect is fresh off representing Team USA on the FIBA U16 Championship team. Lewis is a highly-skilled big man capable of stretching the floor, and there is an argument TO BE MADE that he enters the season as the most promising big man on the roster. 7-footer Jahzare Jackson, formerly of IMG Academy, is oozing with potential, but will need to get in better game-shape in order to play meaningful stretches of minutes in Leitao’s fast-paced offense. Davion Mace was one of the last signings to OTE, and the 6-foot-8 wing will provide OTE with an athletic energy-guy off the bench.
