Is St. John’s Walkable?

Westjet’s up! magazine has ranked St. John’s number 9 of the top ten Most Walkable Cities in Canada, after Ottawa and Calgary. Vancouver and Victoria made the top spots. Here’s what folks had to say at thescope.ca Dave Lane: There’s nice stuff to look at whilst attempting walking, perhaps?

Patrick Canning: St. John’s is way more walkable then Ottawa, it should be at least 7th in my opinion.

Peter Hanes: I’ve only been to a few of the cities on the list, but I’m willing to guess that St. John’s is the smallest one on there, which also means you can cover a lot of ground and see the whole of downtown in an afternoon easily. The irony of course being that St. John’s is anything but walk-

able in the winter. Summer? Absolutely.

Winter? Absolutely not.

Questioner: hell yes…ever hear of the grand concourse? the t’railway? turn off your computers, park the car and get outside. St. John’s doesn’t end downtown.

You can walk to friggin mt pearl or even stavanger in less time it takes to bus there, using the excellent grand concourse system.

If you’ve been paying attention to St. John’s politics recently, especially the Fortis and Woolworth’s property debates, you’ve probably heard the term “Class A office space” thrown around a lot, and how there is a shortage of it here in the city.

You also may have wondered,“is my office ‘Class A’?”

The bad news is, well, probably not.

But the good news is there’s nothing official stopping you from saying so!

“Class A” is a term created and used in real estate circles to designate a category of prestigious office Andrew space. Say if I were to build a nice, new building next to what people called a “Class A” office building here in St. John’s, it would probably seem more “Class B”, because in comparison, it would be less prestigious.

Windows on the West So, you know Riverhead, the oldest neighbourhood in St. John’s, right?

Never heard of it? Yeah, us either.

But it exists, and it’s full of stuff! Like the Railway Coastal Museum, the George Street United Church, the Newman Wine Vaults, the Christina Parker Gallery, and some pretty wicked second-hand furniture stores.

Yeeeaaah, right, that area actually has a name other than the West End. Anyways, as part of the City Of St. John’s Birthday celebrations, you can learn all about it via a free informative scavenger hunt and tour, called Windows on the West, on June 19th. Just pop by any of those locales, except the furniture stores, and they’ll set you up.

Forget the bands. It’s the battle of the fans each Tuesday night at The Levee for all of June and July. Er, wait. Don’t forget the bands. See, the whole point is that the Tuesday bands that attract the biggest number of fans win eight hours of recording time from Record Time Productions, a bit of cash, and an appearance on the Inside Newfoundland radio show on CHMR. As extra incentive, there will be some sweet door prizes for the show-goers. Cover is $2 between 9pm and 10pm, and then $5 after that. Did you know that he’s gone and recorded another album? This time, our beloved Django-inspired gypsy jazz guitar virtuoso has teamed up with Cape Breton fiddler Dwayne Côté. Their self-titled album of duets explores the confluence of jazz and traditional folk, and the result is as agreeable as the little sun shining between the fiddle and guitar on their album cover. Join them at the DF Cook Recital Hall, on June 4th, at 8pm, for their CD release show.

Tickets are $15 at the door.

Comic Artist Breakdown Comics

Screech Comedy Festival It’s the fourth installment of the Newfoundland Screech Comedy Festival, and Louis C.K. is coming.

No, really, he is. You may know him from his brutally, um, honest(ish) depictions of life as a marriedwith-kids kind of guy. Oh, and he also starred in Ricky Gervais’ The Invention of Lying and directed Pootie Tang. The point is, he’s hilarious, and he’s performing on Opening Night, on June 5th, at the Holy Heart Theatre. Battle of the Fans

What happens when the artistic traditions of rural Newfoundland no longer have any practitioners, save for archivists and folklorists?

So asks the Shed Collective with their exhibit Dark Night of the Ugly Stick, a full-scale replica of a rural Newfoundland shed in which you can watch a short film depicting what will be lost when the last generation of pre-confederation Newfoundlanders and the outport towns are gone. You can check it out at the Eastern Edge Gallery until June 12th, Tuesday to Saturday, from noon until 5pm.

Also closing on the 12th are Amalie Atkins’ Scenes From a Secret World, a re-imagining of fairy tales and their archetypal characters, and Stacey Barnes’ collection of abstract paintings, The Inspiration In Me. They also host Words In Edgewise, a collaborative night between the MUN Humanities M.Phil students and local artists. The next one’s on June 17th. Check www.bit.ly/cWMcFC for information.

Why doesn’t St. John’s have an arts college yet? I know that we have Grenfell and the Visual Arts program in Stephenville and the amazing Textile Studies program here in the city, but St. John’s is supposed to be one the great culural hubs of the nation and we have the most artists per capita in the A1C postal code alone—think of all the great teachers we could have if we had an arts college here. Not everyone can afford to go away for school either. Imagine the Battery Hotel location revamped into a college of the visual and performing arts! It would even have dorms built right in, and lots of space for studios and lecture halls. — ­Vanessa Wade

Welcome to The Scope’s Comics Issue! Every year we spend an issue paying homage to our favourite part of the newspaper—the part with the speech balloons and the talking animals.

Every year we ask our readers to submit new strips to compete for a regular spot on the printed pages of The Scope. Now in its third year, the contest has attracted more submissions from Newfoundland and Labrador artists than ever before. Go team!

In previous years, we would assemble a panel of judges and have them pick the winning strips, but this year we’re going to try something different. We’re asking you, dear reader, to help us decide which eight strips we will be running this year. What is Behold!!?

A small, single-panel vessel into which I evacuate my mental excreta.

Each episode a single square torn from a roll of intellectual toilet paper upon which I have tended to the hygiene of my eternally lugubrious assbrain. The title is an homage to Harvey Kurtzman’s great strip “Hey Look!”

Who are you?

I am an artist and illustrator currently living in St John’s Newfoundland. I studied as a print-maker and painter.

What is Nothing Special About Words?

In response to my frustration with writing about my drawings, a friend once said, ‘There is nothing special about words.’ I have chosen these words of wisdom as the title of my comic strip that uses little to no text to describe narratives, observations, social patterns, geometric patterns and indulgent doodles among a few other things.

What is Free Fall Fight?

My comic is called Free Fall Fight. It does not feature any free fall fights due to its horizontal nature but there is an evil bird and a kid with a cape.

What is Bleak?

Bleak is a poorly drawn absurdist comic with ugly characters and immature jokes that treat the reader to a bite-sized morsel of foolishness, like any decent comic should.

If I were to describe it to the uninitiated, I would tell them to close their eyes and imagine they are on a beach—the waves gently lapping at the shoreline; the sand coarse and hot between their toes. Then, out of nowhere, a doctor appears and diagnoses them with an incurable disease.

It’s about Mr. Pickles and his little forehead wrinkles friend. Mr. Pickles will observe something and Mr. Forehead Wrinkles will make some sarcastic remark about it.

The Neon Light rolls were amazing. So delicious. I have eaten sushi in places other than Newfoundland, mainly Toronto, and I always liked it. But the Neon Light rolls at Asian Taste blew my tastebuds. So good.

Definitely recommend.

You know what? This is my new favourite restaurant in St. John’s. The food was amazing. Delicate but still bold, simple ingredients but sophisticated flavours. It looks like a fancy restaurant inside but the prices are mid to low. I ordered the bibimbap, which I’d never had before, and it was great. I imagine you could pick anything from the menu and it would be.

Like with Chinese or Japanese restaurants, be sure to share your entree with all of your tablemates. Sure they have a few minor service kinks to iron out it being their first week and everything but this restaurant blew me away. Can’t wait for their liquor license to arrive.

This is a great restaurant, underrecognized. I’ve only ever had great experiences and great food there. Service is good, really nice selection of wines, and a menu that is really pescatarian-friendly (ie. if you’re a vegetarian who also eats seafood, this is your spot). The almond goat cheese appetizer is heaven. And I would give five stars except I think their crab cake appetizer is way too salty... Overall a really nice place to have a nice, head-buzzy, drawn-out, romantic meal.

Where to watch the FIFA World Cup From June 11th to July 11th, the entire world will be losing its collective mind over soccer. Though the games are happening in South Africa, you can still get in on the madness. Here are the choice spots to catch the games, even the early ones, around town

Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council 204 Water Street

The Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council will be showing all the games for free at the Centre For Social Justice, just above Coffee and Company. The first game, South Africa vs. Mexico, is on June 11th at 11am.

The Duke of Duckworth 325 Duckworth

The Duke will definitely be a key spot. They’re not sure yet if they’ll be officially opening early for all of those late morning games, but if it’s an important one, they’ll be there waiting for you. They’re also there in the mornings anyways, so if you bring a bunch of your friends down to knock on the door, there’s a good chance that they’ll throw the game on for you.

O’Reilly’s Pub

O’Reilly’s will have their TVs blazing, too. They’re not sure yet whether they’ll be opening early for the 10am matches, but they are sure that if enough people ask them to, they will.

Nickel For Our Thoughts?

We admit, we’re running out of Nickel puns.

The annual Nickel Film Festival is once more gracing our city with some truly memorable films. With an avalanche of films descending, Adam Clarke and Jillian Butler offer their top picks from this year’s crop.

Secret Lives From jelly bean obsessives to voodoo dolls, these seven films offer stories from unique perspectives.

Sebastian’s Voodoo Dir. Joaquin Baldwin Were you ever creeped out by those Robaxacet ads where an ever-suffering marionette is stabbed repeatedly with pins? If so, get ready to add more nightmare fuel to your subconscious with Sebastian’s Voodoo, a memorably creepy piece about a brave voodoo doll that rebels against his creator.

With its vivid designs and lush soundtrack, Voodoo recalls the recent Tim Burtonproduced 9, except it pulls off its story with greater coherence, depth, and a much shorter running time.

Father and Sister Dir. Soyeon Kim Father and Sister is a quirky animated short that depicts a Catholic priest and a nun driven to sin by bees! Yes, a bumblebee attaches itself to a young nun, causing the priest to catch her in some semi-provocative positions as she writhes in agony. Wait, lust in the church? NEVER!

Mr. Shape Directed by Motohio Shirakawa Mr. Shape, as his name suggests, is a collection of geometric shapes that can reconfigure himself at will when the situation warrants it. This random series of shorts, running no more than a scant three minutes, would be ideal programming alongside Kids CBC fare like Pingu and Sesame Park. While brief, the giddy weirdness and goofy vignettes are pretty endearing, and a lot of fun.

Murphy’s Shorts Directed by Todd Hemker Meet Murphy, a fat kid with something to prove: he’s going to take a leap off the high-dive at the local swimming pool and make everyone proud. And, as is almost always the case with portly characters, he gets publicly humiliated. Like Father and Sister, Murphy’s Shorts is a film that was helmed by an animator for Dreamworks and uses simple, yet colourful visuals to tell an amusing story.

Debt Directed by Mike Weiss There’s an old saying that goes, “Find a penny, pick it up and all the day you have good luck.” But where does all this good luck come from?

In Debt, a stop-motion short from Mike Weiss, these questions are put to the test from the point of view of an untalkative moppet with the hair and fashion sense of a Midwich Cuckoo. When this kid collects a penny, your luck’s run out. The main reason to go to film festivals, be it Sundance, TIFF or the Nickel, is for the unexpected gems that pop up out of nowhere.

Weiss, an animator who cut his teeth on stopmotion shows like Rick & Impertinent Questions Who would win in a fight: Dracula or Blacula?

Steve and Celebrity Deathmatch, employs an unpredictably nasty sense of humour that is far and away the highlight of this year’s Nickel.

The Chambered Nautilus Dir. Vanessa Woods In the mold of Terry Gilliam’s Monty Python toons (minus the cheeky tone), this 16mm animated short makes terrific use of limited movement and colour, offering a strange undersea point of view. Woods’ film is a smooth blend of 19th century image cut-outs and stark backgrounds woven together in a brilliant, dreamy montage. With its eerie black and white look, ambient sounds, and striking visuals, The Chambered Nautilus almost plays like an animated version of the infamous Ring video. Warning: The Nickel Film Festival is not responsible for any patrons who die seven days after viewing this short.

Beans Dir. Marly Reed This live-action short film is so featherweight, a stiff wind could easily blow the print out of the theatre. That is precisely why Beans is so charming. Hailing from British Colombia, this short begins with a bored little girl pestering her Mom for money at the grocery store. When the girl gets her greasy mitts on a quarter, she high-tails it to a candy dispenser and grabs a fistful of jelly beans. After her Diabetes-inducing feast, she’s left with the most disgusting fate of all: she still has a single black jelly bean! Beans does a nice job of capturing the inventive, left-field solutions children put forth when ditching an undesirable object, not to mention the inherent grossness of licorice jelly beans. Reed’s short film is ideal for folks of all ages who will enjoy its bright colours, toe-tapping soundtrack and its endearingly goofy ending.

The Cost of Living Six films exploring what happens when the mystical rules of modern life change in the middle of the game.

Envirometer Dir. Danny Robashkin A simplified parable of two societies fighting for survival. The “Envirometer” of the That’s easy, Billy. Having both experienced racism from others— Blacula for his skin colour and Dracula for his European background and beguiling mustache—the two would team up to fight an undead Grand Imperial Wizard.

title is just what it sounds like: a cartoon meter broadcasting the balance between nature-friendly practices, like recycling and tree-planting, and industry’s pursuit of wealth and livelihood. In that sense, Envirometer has all the moral ambiguity of an episode of The Raccoons, but with enough whimsy to sell the showdown.

With splashy, hilariously suggestive animation, Envirometer is a strange, thoroughly entertaining meditation on whether we’ll ever bring balance to the planet.

Pawnshop Dir. Andrew Bush In this short, a man tries to buy his girl an engagement ring, but can’t seem to get past the existential meandering of the shop’s owners, making a great case for online shopping. The film never really cashes in on the promise of its premise - two mean old men second-guessing every customer that walks into the shop? That is comedy gold . But in the end, Pawn Shop lands on a brief, heart-warming moral about the perks of staying true to your own mind, even if you haven’t made it up yet. Fans of sketch comedy troupe Picnicface may recognize the director: Andrew Bush is one of its members.

Three-Fifty Dir. Maurice Chauvet It’s the kind of little white lie we all pull: a man returns a movie late, and lamely tries to dodge the fee. But what he falls into is an existential crisis that grows more incredulous and humorous by the frame, as he discovers the video store’s database holds more than his mailing address. It’s Kafka by way of Charlie Kaufman, as the meaningless bureaucracies of everyday life are pulled into the light, producing a surreal, witty take on modern life.

compelling and impossibly optimistic, Tar Creek reinforces the importance of social awareness in the hope that history will never repeat itself.

Family Matters Six films that prove the old adage that family isn’t a word, it’s a sentence.

Trolls Dir. Brianne Nord-Stewart This short film from Brianne Nord-Stewart captures how mystifying the nuances of adult existence must seem to children: Billy and Genevieve are left to entertain themselves while their caretakers “play”, and in the absence of any plausible explanation, the kids come up with their own elaborate game of point-gathering for weird, abstractly “adult” behaviours. It pits everyday sexual politics against the unflinchingly truthful worldview of children, and to its credit, nails the groan-inducing things kids say when they don’t understand the words they’ve learned on the playground. Guaranteed: you will giggle uncomfortably, but in a good way.

An Affair with Dolls Dir. Hans Montelius From the first frame, you know something’s not right: a strangely dressed woman is left alone in an expensive apartment to play with her dolls. At first, the play is endearingly childlike – the first blushes of a relationship acted through Barbie dolls can seem both unnervingly human and relent-

lessly alien. Before long, it’s anxiously clear that this dollhouse isn’t a welcoming one.

The soundtrack, with its pushy chords and telegraphing of key emotional moments, is the only real misstep in this truly disturbing look at the breakdown of one woman’s morality in the name of love.

Bollywood Beckons Dir. Sophie Ann Rooney When Neeru, a young Canadian girl, finds herself facing an arranged marriage (and with it, her ruined dreams of Bollywood fame) she escapes into colourful, vividly imagined musical numbers that predict her possible futures. As a genre, Bollywood is a world unto itself, with precise laws for its cinematic universe, and what makes this short film so fun is the clever, inventive ways this Canadian-made film sends up those rules. The lush production values, along with a valiant effort to lovingly imitate the intricate Bollywood form, contrast so starkly with the bland suburban reality that you can’t blame the girl for aiming her sights high.

Best Served Dir. Jordan Canning Locked away in a non-descript evil castle, a mad scientist plots to bring his evil creation to life -- but, like most newly-weaned offspring, all the little monster wants is a date. So begins one of the stranger entries into our family genre, the Jordan Canningdirected music video for local heroes the Pathological Lovers (who star, respectively, as a mad scientist, his eviiiil assistant, a werewolf and the aforementioned lovesick

Monster). In a pitch-perfect mash up of the monster flick meets John Hughes, this video is a satisfying balance of campy and self-aware pomp.

Bread Dir. Justin Simms Brief, haunting and stark—words to describe both this short from Justin Simms and the Michael Crummey short story on which it’s based. The characters haunt the half-space between life and fiction, their faces and forms never quite captured by the camera. The result is a tale of outport life that could have been lived by anyone, at any time, graced with the lyrical qualities of love lived on the fringes.

The Magnificent Molly McBride Dir. Deanne Foley Molly McBride (Julia Kennedy) is a dancer who can’t dance, and Andy Jones is a thief who has all the stealth of a collapsing bookshelf. Together, this unlikely pairing form a kinder, gentler era of buddy films, as Jones tries to teach the young Molly to dance.

It’s a rare film that refuses to cash in on the audience’s goodwill for child actors to earn its happy ending, and Molly McBride manages splendidly. With some genuinely touching emotional scenes between its two leads, this is one engaging romp through St. John’s streets.

Mum’s the Word Dir. Edward Tanasychuk There’s a legend going around town that a fortune is hidden in an elderly local’s family home. So four “enterprising” thieves take it upon themselves to don a disguise and crash his holiday party in search of treasure. The pace of this short starts strong and never falters, laying down gag after gag and never outstaying its welcome.

You’ll see some of the punchlines coming, but that’s half the fun. It doesn’t hurt that you’ll spend half the time cross-referencing people you’ve had a beer with; this film is basically a who’s who of famous St. John’s faces.

Tar Creek Dir. Matt Myers The landscape in 2009 documentary Tar Creek looks more like a third world wasteland than the once-thriving mining town in middle America it should be. But the effects of industry have ravaged the land, turning a small community into a veritable death trap. For years, leftover mining waste collected in poisonous mountains, exposing the residents to dangerous toxin levels. The details of Tar Creek unfurl with a sickening familiarity: parents building sandboxes full of infected dirt and unnerving reports of mothers bearing children with lifethreatening defects. The narrative of this environmental horror story is an old one, and that’s perhaps its greatest strength:

In one episode, an inept female security guard chases the lead character, Jeff, hoping to catch and cite him for a farcical misdemeanor. As she races along, shouting for him to stop, she takes out her can of pepper spray and shoots several streams in his direction. The cloud of noxious stuff doesn’t reach him, but she runs face-first into it as she continues her pursuit. It irritates her eyes and forces her to halt. Later, in telling her associate what happened, she says she was the victim of “self-inflicted friendly fire.” I worry that you’ll soon be tempted to carry out a metaphorical version of that, Capricorn.
