The End Show.
The School is an interdisciplinary collaboration between local and international designers to form a better city. 15 October 2O17: The School starts! 3-6 May 2O18: The School rethinks the city: The End Show. Can we form a school in the center of a city? Can we challenge the city as a system? Can we challenge the educational system as we know it? Can we activate people to collaborate? Can we invite international multidisciplinary creatives to become city designers? Is The School a school? Is The School a city?
The School was a journey no person ever has experienced before. 7 months, 9 projects, 11 festivals, multiple workshops, talks and interventions, tons of participants. This exhibition tries to make things easier. 8 Projects explained. The rest is history or spread out in other rooms or spaces.

1. Can we form a sharing city?
How can we make a city more sustainable, via the sharing of experiences, materials or ideas? How can we create a sustainable future for the city of Hasselt?
1 The Libray of Things / Bibliotheek der Dingen of Jeroen Boogaerts is a research that builds upon the generosity of people in Runkst. It provides a system where people can lend things out, garden tools to cutlery. It wants to offer an answer to responsible consumption by borrowing things instead of buying them. 2 The church in Runkst became a topic of conversation due
to the current changes, soon ending its current functions. Why do not we make a shared ‘salon’ here? A place where people can make and experience culture together? At the moment objects are being collected that people from Runkst associate with a ‘salon’. 3 A survey was conducted by Yanina Shevchenko, asking inhabitants of Hasselt on their wishes, needs and ability to share. The survey looks at the state of affairs, a perception of sustainability in Hasselt. 4 The survey of Yanina accompanies a pre-research of UHasselt in collaboration with A2O and Architectuurwijzer. This extensive publication is designed by Benjamin Sporken. Zooming in on
Runkst, where a neighbourhood is changing with more and more families, more cars and bicycles and more demand for places to do business, meet, play, hang and live. Through exchanges with local residents and policy makers, a number of future stories are compiled and collected in this publication.
An exhibition was created to show the future of sharing in Hasselt and the need to reveal and possibly strengthen the political potential of the sharing of citizens’ practices already set up (in literature referred to as ‘institutioning’).

The “Iedereen Deelt in Hasselt� debate is organised on Saturday 5 May 17-18h, to bundle diverse opinions towards the future of sustainability in Hasselt.
2. Can we activate urban refugees? More and more people move to the city. They arrive from a neighbour village or from much further places and countries. How can we give these new people a place in the city, an active role and have them feel welcome?
1 Hassling Hasselaar & Ice-cream Music & We Scream Music was one of the short films presented during Pop-up Cinema Festival on 1O February. It explored the politics of music in public space through the lens of diverse street musicians. Music as a cultural expression, together with the usage of modern technology added a dialogue and positive vibe to public life of cities. 2 The “Office for Bureaucritic Imagination – State of Exception” is a participatory speculative performance and toolkit in which the status quo for refugee laws are questioned and new laws can be imagined. Inspired by Hannah Arendt’s idea of political participation, the project creates a stage where different voices in the refugee discourse can be heard. 3 Everyone Loves Ice Cream was organised on 7 April, a participatory festival activating locals and internationals, former refugees, organisations and volunteers active in the integration of immigrants. This festival brought multicultural people together with talks, workshops, art exhibitions, music and dance performances. The tougher subjects in life were given balance with creativity, positivity and ice cream.

The Office for Bureaucritic Imagination will be open for a debate on the laws that were suggested during the Everyone Loves Ice Cream Festival. Join us to deliberate the new refugee laws together with Wim Thiry (migration lawyer), refugees, migrants, non-migrants and colleagues from the city municipality.

Everyone Loves Ice Cream Festival had its 1st edition in September 2O17 in Milan, May 2018 it was organised in Hasselt and welcomed 2OO+ participants.
3. Can we understand the dynamics of a library? How can we make a connection between the library and the city?
1 Designing for a City of Lies workshop by Søren Rosenbak. A public space as the library (as entrance to the city) has negative public associations, is unwelcoming due to its architectural setting. How to throw a surprise party for all the waiting people at the entrance of the library to open up a conversation about public space and institutions in Hasselt. 2 Cartopology, a workshop on cartography and anthropology by Dear Hunter. Is there a difference between a plan, a map and a drawing? Positioning oneself between art and science. 3 PublicReading is the first sketch of a new performance work by Serena Chalker that explores and develops the personal archives of people that use the Bibliotheek Hasselt Limburg. Developed from anonymous observation and documentation of the library users over a one month period, this new site-specific performance imagines into the personal narratives that cross this private/public space. Part installation, part narrative and part performance, the library is explored as a space where observing and recording the personal becomes part of the function of the Library as an institution. Walking the line between fact and fiction, private and public, PublicReading moves between these intimate glimpses into the people of Hasselt and the stories they have to tell. You can see this non recorded performance popping up in the library on Friday 4 May 17-18h3O. 4 Chantalle Weerts followed the research and designed the publication of PublicReading.

During her residency at The School, one could find Serena Chalker between books and shelves, observing and reacting, forming dialogue in dance with library visitors and users.
4. Can we restart a community through play? A forgotten triangle playground was found, grey of many Belgian winter months. Sint-Jansplein turned out to house a micro world of multiple cultures and age classes. What would be needed to restart this urban engine?
1 Various spontaneous and planned actions and creations were made throughout the city: • Red-White Ribbon Installation by Deana Kolencikova and Mia Bac • Serena Chalker’s poetic questions were chalked on the pavement • A good neighbour of Sint-Jansplein offered her empty wall for a giant painting by Deana Kolencikova • Ilse Jooken and Pablo Hannon painted concrete dots in the city center on the busiest shopping Sunday ever in Hasselt • Iris van der Heijden’s basket field design was collaboratively painted, including many extra graphic elements co-created by local Dominique Froyen • Jan Thys’ plan of circulation and urban planning of the ‘hood’ 2 The Alternative Play workshop by Gabriel Fontana had two outcomes during the festival, a fun innovative release of energy. 3 Urban Playground, the project formed a unique series of dialogues in the neighbourhood, Sunday café meetings, planning of the festival and of the future plans after: traffic circulation, sustainable play field objects, neighbourhood roles, a handover tool to continue this project is being made by Virginia Lui, including the graphic identity by Iris van der Heijden. 4 During the (1st) Urban Playground Festival Sint-Jansplein was rebaptised as community connector. 6 April was sunny, heart warming and activating the young and wise through various fields of play. Ping Pong, Basket, Slow Football, Petanque, Rollerskate, Stretchy dance and singing, the alternative play and the best of all: a giant pillow fight. Oh, and a neighbourhood love song to top it all by locals Anton Clijmans and Benjamin Tonon.

5. Can we include a city in a public garden? Not all neighbourhoods are the same, directing participation to their limits. What is possible to open up this garden of a city museum? What organisational or architectural changes must be taken to create a new urban space?
1 The Stadsmus garden was given 8 new art pieces, bound by a concept to give extra strength to the architecture of the garden. Specialy designed and crafted objects, sounds and light were woven into this unique place. Porcelain ceramics, wind and light design objects, paintings, installations, graphic design and music formed this group exhibition and moment. 2 Composition for a Garden was organised on a sunny 22 April to celebrate the finalised art interventions and to open up the discussion on history and context of the garden (architect Herman Van Meer), contemplate on the possibilities of the neighbourhood interactions and activations with director of Stadsmus Ann Delbeke, and overview the art pieces with coordinator Pepa Ivanova and moderators Liesbeth Huybrechts and Pablo Hannon. The day ended with extra digestive thoughts through the music performance of Pepijn Leenders and Mia Bac.

Weather forecasts co-determine an outdoor art intervention. This given Sunday afternoon was summery pleasant.
6. Can we slow down a station area? An overgrowth of government services and lack of investment in private and railway properties have decreased the appetite for civic participation in this station area. Can all city departments work together in reconstructing a new urban movement, of slower pace?
1 Designing for a City of Lies workshop by Søren Rosenbak. A public space as the station area (as entrance to the city) has negative public associations, is not cozy due to its architectural setting. How to install an interview-sofa and outdoor living area to open up a conversation about the coziness of public space and the needs of that station area in Hasselt. 2 Through participation of The School in the neighbourhood meetings, and in the safety/prevention driven VOLTHA meetings, a dialogue was started on the redesign of the street and station area. Gathering all possible stakeholders via interviews and meetings, an extra tool was needed to decompress the discussions: Päper Shøp, a temporary place to conduct a new form of dialogue on urban issues via the elements of poetry and paper. This will be activated on Saturday 5 May between 14 and 16h. Same poetry, different technique is the street painting during Kunstennacht. Via spraypainted words a visual reference will be created to solve issues on traffic safety of the street. 3 The continuation of community tools like Ståtiønsbürt Facebook page and the 3rd edition of Stråtfëst on Sunday 6 May, people grow attachment and care to their neighbourhood. 4 A second performance by BusBaanBeat during Kunstennacht will literally slow down the speed of the street. Reasons to wander sideways instead of march forward are installed in the empty shops in Bampslaan. Urban Playgrounds are opened and passed on to Halte 24, het Kunst Schip opens a former porn cinema to have regular art exhibitions, the facade of a former kebab restaurant is the canvas to an installation by Marnik Neven, reacting on the outdoor photographic exhibition by Yanina Shevchenko. The School and Tajine continue to disrupt the unbalanced neighbourhood with positivity.

What do you think the station area needs? What could make this neighbourhood cozy?
7. Can we grow back the wild in the public woods? Hasty busy life of these days is a killer. A city needs a lot more green areas to provide her inhabitants with a way out. How can the woods of Herkenrode give back earth to the inhabitants of Hasselt? How can we grow more urban resiliance via the woods?
1 A Wild Colours Workshop at the atelier of Kristof Vrancken explored all that nature gives us. Fabrics were coloured with natural pigments. Kristof researches industrial polution via natural pigments of a various amount of plants. 2 Wildebos, a day of feast and art, music and research in the woods of Herkenrode near Kermt. A moment to reboot the human machine, and bring out the beast. Juices of flowers, charcoal to draw with, aquarelle pigments found here and there, a day of reacting on what the little woods provided. Installations of coloured fabric, saturated and painted patterns, music from the origin of our tribes, photographs of the woods and patterns in the grass. A fire to bring out the spirits.
We need a place where we can release our daily demons. A place with nearly no rules, where everything is possible. A place where your emotions shouldn’t be hidden. A place where your wildness can be released and left.

Wildebos is the wild woods or the woods of the wild. Can we protect this wild, this beast inhabitant? Should we stay away from the woods, or create a new way of approaching it?
8. Can we uplift our future makers? What is keeping young students away from school? What is causing their lack of appetite to learn or to sit on the benches of the institute called school? Can craft be crossover connected with creativity or should it have been already?
1 A team of The School inhabited the school of HAST for one week, exploring the habits of its students, teachers, administration,... Slowly becoming ‘one of them’ helped in bridging the gap and getting interesting intel via interviews and small talk. Monday to Friday, with an end feast during lunch, De school is The School organised half an hour of end of week release of energy. Letters created by a variety of ateliers formed a message of strength and empowerment. ‘Wij doen ertoe / We matter’ was created with wood, ceramics, linocuts, electric circuits,... 2 A Q&A research was sent out to all students of KTA1 and HAST. “What is your school, what does it stand for?” and “What could your school be, what do you imagine?” were answered with sketches and observations. 3 A roundtable talk was organised to question a series of preconceptions the outsiders have related to technical and professional schools. Along with the head of department of education in city of Hasselt Carolien Ackaert, The School exchanged critical points of view with wishful thinking and concrete ideas and plans of the daily act of forming school. A constructive and inspiring conversation was the result, which will be published along the vast amount of super energetic photographs and dreamy sketches. 4 Based on the sketches of students imagining a school or refelcting on their own school, a collage of line drawings will be translated into two installations on the street. What forms a school, and what role does it play in the city center? This is a relevant question for The School itself. An inspiring result.
