Reflections from the Interim Head of School

W

hen I talk or write about the ageless spirit of The Schenck School, people often think that the emphasis is on the continuity of practices and look over time. But if you think of someone in their sixties who has an ageless spirit, my guess is that you’ll think of someone who is not fixed in their ways or unchanging in appearance, but always present, attentive, and open to what is new even as they are grounded in the wisdom that comes with experience.

This School’s ageless spirit has revealed itself in the deeply thoughtful approach it has brought to change and adaptation. It has preserved what is most precious, remaining recognizably itself, while adapting carefully to ever-flowing circumstances and our evolving tools and practices.

Dr. Kara Loftin now takes her place, along with other new faces, within these walls and next to a cohort of teachers and staff who understand deeply the School’s core mission of building a solid educational foundation for our students, but who also look forward to their fresh contributions to its story.

One of the great privileges of my wife’s and my year in Atlanta has been living in a townhouse with a deck that ends thirty yards from the banks of the Chattahoochee River. With every shift in weather—rain, cloud, sun, and wind—the water becomes an ever-shifting kaleidoscope, a rich play of shimmering movement, never quite the same. But each time we look out we also see, yards from our deck, that singular, beautiful thing we call the Chattahoochee, a waterway that remains magnificently and recognizably itself even as change and movement remain an essential part of what it is.

Ageless does not mean changeless, but refers rather to qualities of attention, wisdom, and openness that both inform our work, and preserve, amidst changing faces and changing times, this precious thing we call The Schenck School.

A Message from the Head of School Dear Schenck School Community, There is a photo that you may have seen around the School of Mr. David T. Schenck and a gaggle of students haphazardly piled on and around him. Mr. Schenck with eyes bright, a smile from ear to ear. Each student beaming. I discovered this photo during my first visit to the School, and I immediately felt a connection to it. Captured was the innocence, the playfulness, and the joy of children, and seated in the center was a man who clearly cared deeply for the students entrusted to him. That one photo conveyed so much. I knew I had found a school whose roots run deep and whose foundation was built on kindness and an unwavering belief in the rich potential of each student.

After my visit, I made my way back home, not yet sure if The Schenck School would be the beginning of a beautiful new adventure for me and my family or if this would be my last visit. However, the image of the photo lingered in my mind. It spurred me to learn all that I could about Mr. Schenck. And discover I did. Countless quotes and stories from Mr. Schenck abound, reminding us to allow children to be children, not to worry too much, and to revel in the joy of childhood.

I found a kindred spirit.

The ageless spirit of The Schenck School persists as Mr. Schenck’s legacy continues to illuminate our path into the future, shining a light for all to see that children with dyslexia are full of potential and capable of great success; they are to be celebrated, recognized, and understood for the incredibly brilliant thinkers they are. Thank you for your unwavering support of The Schenck School, your commitment to the legacy of Mr. Schenck, and for joining us as we continue to change the lives of students now and for generations to come.

Mission

For more than 60 years, our mission has remained remarkably focused: build a solid foundation for dyslexic students and develop their rich potential. Our strategy to accomplish this goal is the focused, accelerated remediation of dyslexia using the highly effective Orton-Gillingham Approach. While reading and writing are central to our curriculum, The Schenck School offers a comprehensive educational program for Kindergarten through sixth grade to help students develop intellectually and to prepare them to thrive in school, and in life.

BAMfest is a Big Hit

BAMfest, The Schenck School’s annual celebration of books, art, music, and movement, was a big success this year! Students interacted with many talented visitors, including storytellers Mama Koku and Andy Offutt Irwin, artists Chad Creasy and Meredith Gillespie, Piccadilly Puppets, and opera singer Marnie Breckenridge. They ended the day rocking out with a special concert by Her Majesty’s Request, a Beatles tribute band.

Terra Wins the Coveted House Cup

This year’s House Cup was awarded to Terra! Competition was very close, with Ignis in second place, Tempus in third, and Solis in fourth by razor-thin margins. The Schenck School House System, which quickly became a beloved tradition, was created to bring students, faculty, and staff together from all grade levels to develop teamwork and to cultivate a strong sense of community. Students earn marbles for their houses all year round as positive reinforcement for demonstrating good character, resilience, and citizenship and for “doing your best.” Different houses won the monthly competitions, and Terra had the highest accumulated points from the entire year with 218.82 pounds of marbles.

Everyone Was a Winner at Field Day

Weather challenges couldn’t dampen the fun at Field Day this year! With the help of over 90 parent volunteers, students enjoyed field activities including sack races, threelegged races, water balloons, relays, tug of war, and more!

We recently asked The Schenck School’s sixth Head of School, Dr. Kara Loftin, about experiences influencing her leadership, her thoughts on the future of The Schenck School, and what compels her to champion students with dyslexia. Here are her reflections.

W

hether as a school administrator or teaching in a classroom setting, I spent the first almost two decades of my educational career knee-deep in the study of neurotypical students. I was open-minded, pedagogically progressive, and willing to do the hard work needed to reach every student in my care. One student, however, set me on a journey that forever changed the trajectory of my career and ultimately led me to where I am today, as the Head of School at a school for students with dyslexia, a school solely for neurodiverse students.

From the beginning of my career, I witnessed bright students who struggled and bright students who experienced setbacks. As an educational leader, my goal was not only to bring meaning to academic content, but it was to do so in tandem with developing skills for planning, sustaining attention, prioritizing work, and learning how one learns best. So much of what I was seeing in my students who struggled was a fundamental lack of skill. Whether linked to executive functioning skills, like planning and organization, or academic skills, I felt well equipped to work with

many of these skills-based difficulties. However, I had no experience working with students with diagnosed learning differences. When it came to teaching reading, I was out of my league.

In 2012, a student enrolled at my school who had been diagnosed with dyslexia in second grade but had no school experiences with a robust, evidence-based structured literacy intervention. Nick, now as a ninth grade student embarking on a new experience, had not had the services needed to become a proficient reader and writer; he was struggling, and I wasn’t sure how to help him. I was both his teacher and a school administrator tasked with implementing the academic support and services needed for each student in the school to succeed. To unlock his potential, he needed fundamental skill development in the areas of phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension.

At that point in my career, I did not have the training to teach him in ways that would increase his literacy skills and elicit the best academic outcome he needed.

Additionally, we also had no other faculty or staff at the school with this specialized skill set. This is where my life’s journey in education profoundly changed. First, I

sought knowledge and training through more informal means, such as workshops and books. This homegrown learning served its purpose in the beginning, yet it was apparent within a few years that I needed to do more. I was able to work with Nick to improve his study habits, executive functioning, and self-advocacy; this served him well. Unfortunately, I continued to lack the necessary training to provide what is known as the gold standard for students with dyslexia, the OrtonGillingham Approach. After four years, he graduated and, whether true or not, I felt I had failed him. At that time, I committed to go back to school for a more formalized education. What started with a Master’s of Education degree in Special Education, specifically focused on dyslexia, ended with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Special Education where my culminating doctoral research included improved training protocols for teachers and others administering strengths-based assessments for students with exceptionalities.

Commonly, we hear students singing accolades of teachers who have changed their lives. For me, this is the reverse. I am forever grateful and humbled by the fresh-faced, young, 15-year-old boy who arrived in my classroom with an

eagerness to learn despite a teacher and a school ill-equipped to provide what he needed. After years of pursuing academic programs specific to students with exceptionalities, I am a teacher of teachers, a school administrator, and a thought leader in the field of exceptionalities, promoting practices that embrace neurodiversity and celebrate the competencies and strengths of all learners. This one student fundamentally changed who I am as a school leader. I teach differently, I think about education differently, and now, I am leading a school differently, so that every student has access to the academic program most suited to their individual needs.

Not only did this one student have such a profound impact on my career, but now, years later, as I reflect on the journey that led me to The Schenck School, I see how this experience began the process of acknowledging and coming to terms with my own learning difficulties as a child, an experience I long buried and didn’t talk about.

When I was young, I had a speech disorder. Similar to the experiences of many with learning differences, I felt shame and carried a perception of not measuring up to my peers. There was a piece of Nick’s experience that I understood on such a visceral level.

I didn’t understand that fully then, but I do now. I was able to connect and empathize with him authentically; I was able to see beyond his difference to his brilliance. And yes, in time, I was able to take that

same compassion and apply it to myself. I can now see more fully who I am and what I am capable of. This is what I want for all of my students–a sense of pride in who they are, confidence in their capabilities, and a deep understanding that their differences are what make them truly special.

Here I am embarking on a new journey as both Head of School at The Schenck School and Executive Director of ReadSource. Shepherding the School’s nurturing community and continuing the spirit of brilliance, warmth, and joy that David Schenck clearly embodied are among my top priorities. To preserve and perpetuate his legacy is no small feat, and this is not lost on me. I am eager to maintain and enhance the standard of excellence the School has already set in a dynamic, fast-changing educational landscape.

When thinking of ReadSource, its future is also exciting. Today, the science of reading is embraced more broadly and there is a better understanding of the state of literacy in America with a call to action

being heard among all corners of the country. Our ability to reach struggling readers is greater than ever before, whether it be through tutoring here in this great City of Atlanta, having a seat at the table for policy discussions at the State level, or being a premier provider for teacher training, ReadSource’s future is bright indeed.

One of the characteristics I felt immediately upon my first visit to The Schenck School and ReadSource last year was the unwavering belief in the full potential of each child. As I reflect upon my first six months, this feeling remains the same. I have witnessed firsthand the warm environment the faculty and staff provide so generously to all within their care. Their dedication to the values and mission of The Schenck School and ReadSource is much more than a cultural element; it is a calling. This synergy between culture and calling makes Schenck a distinctly unique place. This all started with David Schenck, a giant among giants, whose shoulders I humbly stand upon.

ReadSource ReadSource Celebrates 10 Years: David Schenck’s Calling Remains Our Calling In 2013, David Schenck’s vision to extend assistance to struggling readers beyond The Schenck School became a reality with the formation of The Dyslexia Resource Trust, now known as ReadSource. Leveraging The Schenck School’s effective dyslexia remediation approach, ReadSource has trained dedicated teachers in proven reading techniques that benefit dyslexic learners. Today, our expertise, experience, and results have reached a wider audience.

On November 20, 2013, The Dyslexia Resource Trust, Inc., now known as ReadSource, was established

by The Schenck School Board of Trustees. With a mission “to provide expertise, resources, research, and assurance to all interested in dyslexia.” Recognizing the physical constraints and full student capacity of The Schenck School, it was clear that the School’s

vision surpassed these limitations. Understanding that only a small percentage of individuals with dyslexia receive a diagnosis and adequate support, the Board believed that a major contributing factor to creating this nonprofit arm of The Schenck School was the lack of dyslexia awareness. Therefore, the primary objective of The Dyslexia Resource Trust became training teachers in the Orton-Gillingham Approach, a fundamental remediation and educational technique in The Schenck School’s curriculum, to identify dyslexia and support its remediation.

In October 2022, the Board of Trustees unanimously decided to change The Dyslexia Resource Trust to ReadSource. This change was prompted by the recognition that not all educators had a clear understanding of dyslexia or how to identify and support students with dyslexia. The previous name, “The Dyslexia Resource,” was deemed too specific and primarily focused on students with dyslexia. Evidence suggested that the intensive reading instruction offered

by The Schenck School Reading Model and the OrtonGillingham Approach benefited all students. Jennifer Dangar, Trustee and Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, stated, “The fact that our approach to teaching students how to read works for all students, not just those who struggle, confirmed to the Board that the organization’s name should evolve. We believe the new name is more inclusive of our approach and more inclusive of all students learning to read and educators who support them. We are proud that The Schenck School and ReadSource are working together to fulfill David T. Schenck’s vision of helping students reach their full potential.”

Continued Demand for Teacher Training

In-person training remains central to ReadSource’s teacher training program. This summer, ReadSource provided training to 61 Atlanta Public School teachers and 54 Marietta City School teachers, maintaining longstanding partnerships with both school districts. ReadSource’s public classes and workshops reached full capacity. Through partnerships with Atlanta Public Schools, Marietta City Schools, and other public and independent schools, ReadSource has successfully trained over 1,700 teachers over the past few years, averaging about 430 teachers annually.

In addition to in-person training, ReadSource introduced a digital product in July 2021 designed to support teachers at all experience levels—this teacher-led overview of the five areas of reading benefits both new and veteran teachers. With hundreds of teachers having completed the course, this represents an area for growth and expansion in the future.

Remediation Services in Partnership with Purpose Built Schools Atlanta Since January 2018, The Schenck School and ReadSource have placed up to ten Reading Remediation Specialists at Slater Elementary and Price Middle Schools, both located in historically underserved communities. Dr. Kim Day, Purpose Built Schools Atlanta (PBSA) Liaison and Director of Research and Academic Development at The Schenck School, shared, “ReadSource aims to close the reading gap for struggling readers, knowing that improved educational outcomes will result for these students across all content areas. Students who received our remediation showed faster improvement in reading and comprehension when compared to grade-level peers.” The partnership with PBSA exemplifies how The Schenck School shares its reading expertise with the community, and ReadSource fulfills its mission of helping all students struggling to learn to read.

A decade ago, we embarked on a journey guided by a shared vision, dedication, and belief in the power of our mission. ReadSource’s progress would not be possible without the generous support of our donors. Donor contributions have played a pivotal role in achieving our mission. Every gift to ReadSource contributes significantly to advancing our mission. As we commemorate this significant milestone, we reflect on the remarkable journey, lives touched, and impact made. As we move forward, our organization’s tenth anniversary signifies not only a celebration of our past but also a testament to our potential.

It reminds us that our journey has only just begun, and the best is yet to come.

A Look Ahead

ReadSource’s goal remains to empower communities to support and educate learners who struggle to read through our training programs and community partnerships.

ReadSource continues to expand its Fellowin-Training program with the intention of increasing the number of Orton-Gillingham classes offered each season. To expand outreach, ReadSource cultivates strong community partnerships, strengthen existing relationships, and foster innovation in building new ones. With the necessary resources, increased awareness, and collaboration with likeminded organizations, we are wholly committed to our longterm vision of supporting and educating learners.

The term “Reading Wars” refers to an ongoing debate, often hotly contested, about the best ways to teach children to approach an unfamiliar word.

S

tructured literacy proponents advocate the use of phonics instruction through a systematic, structured, sequential approach to the teaching of reading. Balanced literacy advocates believe the best way to teach reading is by using a combination of methods, including the whole language model, in which students simply guess at words using visual and contextual cues. Proponents of this approach believe that students will memorize new words and be able to subsequently “read” them when they see them again.

The so-called reading wars have been going on since Horace Mann, a noted educational reformer in the 1800s, declared that students need not learn how to break down words but rather read them as whole words. In response, Samuel Orton wrote an article entitled “The ‘Sight Reading’ Method of Teaching Reading as

a Source of Reading Disability,” published in the February 1929 issue of the Journal of Educational Psychology. He posited that the whole word reading method was destined to prove harmful to students’ ability to learn to read. However, his cautionary words proved fruitless, and in 1930, William Scott Gray’s “Dick and Jane Program” was published. This program was steeped in the whole word approach.

Arthur Gates’s whole language program quickly followed this publication. Gates taught at Teachers College of Columbia University, and by 1940, these whole-word programs were in virtually every primary classroom in America.

According to Samuel Blumenfeld, “No sooner were the Dick and Jane books in the schools than children began to experience all sorts of reading problems. A whole new lexicon of exotic terms was invented by the psychologists

to deal with these new problems: congenital word blindness, word deafness, developmental alexia, congenital alexia, congenital aphasia, dyslexia, strephosymbolia, binocular imbalance, ocular blocks, dyslexaphoria, and more. (The Victims of Dick and Jane, by Blumenfeld, 2022.)

“Eventually, Dick and Jane were phased out and replaced by Whole Language, a deconstructionist reading program that has caused a literacy

catastrophe in California and elsewhere. Its proponents insisted that Whole Language was an improvement over Dick and Jane because the latter were insipid, boring little stories.” (Blumenfeld, 2002) Now, years later, confronted with low national test scores in reading, the research cannot be ignored. For decades reading research has conclusively stated that children will not become proficient readers without direct systematic, sequential phonics instruction.

Recently, more and more school systems around the country are returning to the teaching of phonics.

Teachers Caught in the Middle Unfortunately, teachers have been caught in the middle of this tug-of-war. They are hearing more and more about the science of reading now, but they haven’t been equipped with the tools they need to teach their students how to read effectively. Schools of Education have historically not taught teachers how to teach phonics effectively. Even reading specialists still graduate with limited knowledge of the science of reading because education schools insist on teaching “balanced literacy” rather than equipping their students to teach using phonics.

A Timeline of Reading and Dyslexia 1783

Noah Webster was an influential force in Colonial American education. In addition to creating the first dictionary, he created a reading textbook called the Blue Back Speller in which he taught children how to read, spell, and pronounce words.

1877-1887

Dyslexia was first referred to as “word blindness.” In 1877, the German neurologist, Adolf Kussmaul, called it “complete text blindness... although the power of sight, the intellect, and the powers of speech are intact.” These children who were otherwise very able had extreme reading difficulties.

1836

McGuffey’s Reader consisted of multiple volumes that progressed in difficulty. The first Reader taught reading by using the phonics method, building from sounds to words.

1885

George Farnham promoted the Look-Say Method, which is also known as the “recitation method.”

1887

A decade later, German physician Rudolf Berlin first used the term “dyslexia” to encompass reading challenges as a result of a disability.

1897

Rebecca Pollard introduced the Synthetic Method which was sequential and phonics-based. The Synthetic Method included drills on sounds and syllables and the sounds they represent.

There is encouraging news, however. As the science of reading becomes more widely discussed within the educational community, teachers are beginning to receive the training they need to teach all children to read effectively. The research is being disseminated widely, and schools of education are starting to implement the science of reading in their teacher education programs. Universities such as the University of Georgia are offering courses leading to dyslexia certificates and endorsements. Mississippi is one of the states that has made significant progress in the screening and identification of dyslexia and has established the National Center for Improving Literacy. This is especially impressive because Mississippi was consistently ranked 50th in the nation for secondary school outcomes. It now leads the nation in literacy initiatives. In April 2023, Education Week published “The Mississippi Miracle: Key Strategies for Improving Reading Achievement.” Their program is the basis for states and school districts looking to improve student reading outcomes.

Mississippi made more gains in reading scores than any other state, even given the pandemic losses that most states experienced.

1920s

The Orton-Gillingham Approach was developed in the early 20th century by Dr. Samuel T. Orton, a neurologist, and Anna Gillingham, an educator and psychologist. This approach continues to be used today as an effective method for teaching individuals with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.

1930s

During the 1950s reading was primarily taught using “Look-Say” method using the popular “Dick and Jane” primers which had limited vocabulary. Children were expected to memorize the words through repetition and picture clues.

1959

Mr. David T. Schenck creates The Schenck School in Atlanta, Georgia, specializing in reading instruction for students with dyslexia.

1929

Dr. Samuel Orton publishes his article in The Journal of Educational Psychology, saying “the whole word method was destined to prove harmful to students.”

1967

Dr. Kenneth Goodman’s work in the late 1960s helped develop the whole word approach where readers recognize whole words as parts of language.

He believed if children are immersed in high-quality literature they will acquire reading skills naturally.

During this time period until the mid 1970s Analytic phonics came into wide usage along with the Look-Say method.

1967

1955

“Why Johnny Can’t Read” by Rudolph Flesch was a critique of the Look-Say method of teaching reading used in the Dick and Jane books. Flesch disagreed with this method because it required children to memorize each word and believed the better approach to teach reading was phonics-based.

The book Learning to Read: The Great Debate was published by Jeanne Chall. She concluded that phonics had a greater effect on student success in early literacy instruction. However, the Look-Say method of instruction continued to be the norm in classrooms in the United States for some time.

1997-2000

A National Reading Panel was established to assess the status of research-based knowledge, including effectiveness of various programs for teaching reading.

1983

A report titled A Nation at Risk, commissioned by the National Commission on Excellence in Education, concluded that the nation’s education system was not performing at adequate levels.

Janie comes to us with 15 years of experience at The Lovett School, having worked as the Director of Admission and Chief Marketing Officer. She’s a pro at leadership, creative problemsolving, and top-notch communication. We are excited to welcome her to our School.

I have long known Schenck and genuinely enjoyed working with every single Schenck family I encountered. It is a school with a clear purpose and mission and inspires joyful generosity in those who support our work. I am honored to carry on the legacy of servant leadership that has come before me at Schenck and humbled to serve this community.”

I’ve proudly dedicated 37 years of my career to The Schenck School! My journey began in college when I met a Schenck alum (who later became my husband!), he told me about a wonderful school in Atlanta that changed his life and thought my degree in Learning Disabilities would make me a perfect fit for Schenck. He was absolutely right, and over the years, I’ve held many different roles here, and have found immense joy in being a part of this extraordinary community.

2. What was it like working with David Schenck?

Working with David Schenck was inspiring. I joined the School in 1987, right after the fire, and I remember he was always very busy juggling student screenings and other important school affairs and always had a positive attitude.

Every once in a while, he would make classroom visits, revealing his exceptional teaching abilities—explaining language and math concepts to dyslexic students effortlessly. Students and faculty instantly connected with him.

His unwavering positivity and grace in handling situations left a lasting impression on me.

3. What is something you learned about teaching and working with dyslexic students that you wish the whole world could know?

The first thing I learned from teaching dyslexics was to ask, “tell me about your answer.” About 95% of the time, they respond in a reasonable, logical way, although, it may not be the “typical” answer. It didn’t take me long to realize that dyslexics think differently. I enjoy hearing and learning about the world from their viewpoint and perspective. I’m consistently amazed at their creativity and unique insight.

4. What has it been like teaching literacy to other teachers through ReadSource?

I have been teaching literacy through ReadSource for seven years, and it has been a very fulfilling experience. Sharing The Schenck School Reading Model with other teachers, I’ve witnessed they are eager and excited about the idea of helping struggling students. We provide them with the tools and methods created by The Schenck School to transform student learning. Not only that, but we have been able to reach teachers nationwide and globally. I feel honored to be a part of the effort to change literacy for struggling readers.

5. What is some advice you’d give your younger self?

I always knew I was in a special place, but I would tell my younger self to stay steady and go through changes with ease. The legacy of David Schenck will sustain this powerful work. Others will join in, recognize the importance, and continue the vision. One day, your boys will look at you and be so proud that you’ve been a part of a life-changing experience that helps others just like it helped them.

Participating in Dyslexia-Related Events Made By Dyslexia World Dyslexia Assembly, April 3, 2023 The Schenck School and ReadSource were thrilled to sponsor the 2023 World Dyslexia Assembly held in New York City. Several team members attended the conference. Robyn Curnow, past Schenck School parent, and emcee of this year’s event, spoke about the “groundbreaking, world-first” free curriculum that features The Schenck School’s expert teachers and was created in partnership with Made By Dyslexia.

Hosting the Nation’s Top Educational Researchers Teacher in-service days are often dedicated to ongoing professional development for faculty and staff. “We are constantly challenging ourselves to stay abreast of the latest research and best practices,” says Schenck School Director of Research and Academic Development, Kim Day, PhD. “Every year, the School and ReadSource sponsor accomplished educational researchers to conduct workshops for faculty, staff, and the broader community.”

Presenters during the 2022-2023 school year spoke about the importance of oral language development (i.e., for reading comprehension, teaching children to read, and reading and writing proficiency).

Dr. Tiffany Hogan: On November 2, 2022, Dr. Hogan discussed reading comprehension with our staff and also at a community presentation attended by parents, along with local psychologists and faculty and staff from both independent and public schools. The title of her community presentation was Improving Reading Comprehension Using Evidence-Based Practices. Dr. Hogan is a professor and researcher at MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston.

Providing Expertise On November 4, 2022, The Schenck School was featured in an episode of the PBS monthly program A World of Difference entitled “Making Reading Fundamental for Dyslexics.” The show examines neurodiversity issues related to learning disabilities experienced from birth to adult years.

Dr. Julie Washington January 3, 2023, Dr. Washington discussed language variation (or dialect differences) with the Purpose Built Atlanta Schools’ reading remediation specialists and also at a community lunch and learn attended by The Schenck School teachers, APS Board members, and faculty and staff from independent schools. Her presentation was Teaching African American Children to Read: The Impact of Language Variation. Dr. Washington is a professor and researcher at the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Margie Gillis On April 4, 2023, Dr. Gillis covered why a student’s ability to read and write depends on their teachers’ knowledge of oral language. She presented a community lecture attended by local psychologists and faculty and staff from independent and public schools, entitled Oral Language: The Heart and Core Reading and Writing Proficiency. Dr. Gillis is the founder and president of Literacy How, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides professional learning opportunities and coaching for educators on how best to implement evidence-based practices in the classroom.

Doing Research The Schenck School and ReadSource are involved with three research projects: • Dr. Tiffany Hogan’s research on the language issues of students with dyslexia; • Dr. Joanna Christodoulou’s study on students’ summer reading; • Partnering with Dr. Fumika Hoeft and The University of Connecticut with the newly funded Transcend Ph.D. Program.

What a year it has been at The Schenck School! First, I would be remiss to not start by thanking Bill Wharton for all of his efforts as our Interim Head of School! During his year at Schenck, not only did the School continue to thrive but we accomplished so much with ReadSource as well. We had successful alumni-led events with Double Eagles 4 Dyslexia as well as Sporting Clays for Dyslexia. In the fall we hosted over 40 college-age and older alumni on campus. In the spring we welcomed over 100 of our younger alumni and their parents for our annual Alumni Party.

As we now turn our focus to the 2023-2024 school year, the excitement is building as we welcome Head of School, Dr. Kara Loftin to campus. There is no question that she will do an exceptional job leading Schenck and ReadSource to new heights. And last, I am pleased to introduce Matt Sirockman as our new Chair, of the Alumni Board. It has been a pleasure serving as Chair and I am confident Matt is the right person to lead going forward.

Trust your teachers and their methods as they are teaching you skills that you will use and enjoy throughout your entire life. Soaring On Celebration On May 25, 2023, Anne Hamilton Taylor ’03 spoke to the Class of 2023 at our annual Soaring On ceremony.

In “Dyslexia has Taken on a Different Meaning to Me,” she gave the following advice to the 99 students in attendance:

W

hen I was thinking about what I wanted to say today, I started thinking about what dyslexia means to me. For so many of us in the room, dyslexia might have initially meant something disappointing to hear or perhaps, the diagnosis was welcomed with relief.

For me, I experienced both feelings. I was upset because coming to The Schenck School meant I was leaving my friends at my old school, but more than feeling sad, I felt relief! It was relief I no longer had to hide what I thought was something that was my fault—not working hard enough and not focusing. I

vividly remember sitting at my desk in my old school struggling to keep up with my classmates. I would open a chapter book, read a page and then skip a couple of pages, so it would seem like I was keeping pace with my friends. I thought I just wasn’t as smart as everyone else. As the years have gone by, dyslexia has taken on a different meaning for me.

After leaving The Schenck School, I learned that I now had all the tools I needed to overcome the obstacles dyslexia might present. The Schenck School helped me to understand that I am smart—just as smart as my classmates at my old school. For me, my dyslexia is now something that makes me feel proud.

Dyslexia has played a key role in every personal and professional success I’ve experienced. Overcoming dyslexia, taught me to be innovative and resilient.

While some of my classmates may have excelled in academics more than me, I excelled more than them in grit and determination; where my peers learned one way to solve a problem, I used my outside-the-box thinking to find a more efficient and creative solution.

While I may not be the fastest reader or the best speller, I do not allow those challenges to stop me, and you shouldn’t either.

In closing, I want to share with each of you a secret my Mom told me when I was your age, She said, “School is the hardest thing you are going to do, but once you get through it, you’re going to be wildly successful!

Anne went to The Schenck School for third through fifth grades and continued her education at Woodward Academy. She graduated from The University of Georgia and is now a Relationship Manager in Healthcare at Truist.

Capstone Academy CeCe Hobbs (’16) graduated as the Valedictorian. She serves on the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Young Advisory Board and founded the Capstone Cares school club, bringing awareness to societal issues, and PAWS (Pets and Wildlife for Students). She was President of the National Honor Society and a member of Future Business Leaders of America. She is pursuing a degree

Decatur High School Lily Mae Barcik (’15) graduated from the International Bachelaureate Diploma program. She traveled on the Spanish Immersion Experience, and was a member of the Environmental Club, Reading and Talking Club, Ivy League Club and Harry Potter Club.

Lily was the recipient of the Sarah Lynn Woolf Scholarship Award, and a National Honor Society Scholarship semifinalist and received the Georgia Certificate of Merit. Her student government association awards include: Science Course Achievement (Chemisty) and the Career and Technology Achievement Award (Education). She earned her National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) Workforce Competency Credential Skill Badge in 2022. She has held numerous leadership positions including in the Sunrise Movement Decatur and Task Force for Green Schools Campaign, Decatur Chapter. During COVID

she founded and managed the Solar Sourdough Bread Company over a nine week period. Her most recent internship was with the Wylde Center Mini Farm. She attends Georgia Tech. 4 Noel David Wheatley (’16) was on the varsity swimming and lacrosse teams, and a member of the National Honor Society, and as a part of his IB Career Diploma in education, he served an internship at City Schools of Decatur. Noel wants to become a child life specialist after college. 5

The Galloway School Audrey Smith (’14) participated in all of the theatre productions during her senior year. She spent her summers working on her Wilderness Advanced First Aid, CPR, and scuba certifications. She received the Linda Martinson Award for creativity and fearlessness. Most of her free time is spent making costumes and clothes.

Graduating Seniors Greater Atlanta Christian School Colin Shea (’17) attends Colorado State University, and plans to major in environmental studies and sustainability. The mountains have always been calling him. He credits The Schenk School for helping him be ready for college.

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Will Holland (’17) played varsity baseball for four years and attends the University of Alabama majoring in business. 7 Annie Waters (’15) was the Executive Student Council Activities Coordinator in her eleventh and twelfth grade years, and played varsity lacrosse for four years. IMG Academy, Bradenton, FL Robert Walker Barron (’12) was a member of the IMG National Baseball Team, which set a school and program record for its undefeated 25-0 record and was ranked the #1 high school team in the country. This past year, Walker traveled to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Fenway Park to play with various programs. Walker attends East Carolina University, where he plays baseball. His position is catcher. 25

Jason Klorfein (’96) graduated from Northwestern University and is now a film agent in Los Angeles.

Jarred Klorfein (’98) graduated from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was associate editor of the law review. He is a practicing attorney in Atlanta with Caplan Cobb.

After his time at The Schenck School, Matt Bergin (’99) attended Mt. Vernon for middle school, then went to high school at The McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN, where he graduated in 2007. Matt graduated from Rhodes College, in Memphis, TN, in 2011. He joined his family’s business, Bergin Gold Designs, in 2016. He is married to Samantha Versacer and lives in Roswell, GA, with their dog, Rusty. A

Margaret Snoddy Casto (’03) completed her masters in education at Georgia College, earning a degree in Instructional Technology.

While working on her degree, which she started in the Fall of 2020, she created a Schenck School instructional technology website for teachers and a Summer Adventures website for the Schenck School summer program. She will use this degree daily in the classroom with her students. She currently has an internship at Perkins & Will before continuing on to graduate school. Lizzie Mayfield (’10) graduated from West Virginia University in 2020 and got her Masters in Education from the University of Louisiana in December 2022. She moved back to Atlanta and is now teaching at Morris Brandon Elementary School and coaching soccer at Tophat. D Tucker Kimbrough (’10) is a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corp serving as a strategic communications officer at Camp Pendleton. He is a graduate of Auburn University with an Industrial & Systems Engineereing degree.

Grayson Phillips (’11) completed his senior year at Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville, VA. Upon graduation he will be commissioning in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Chemical Officer. He is currently working in Cashiers, NC as a flyfishing guide for Brookings Anglers.

While in college, he was a member of Army ROTC for 4 years, a member of Theta Chi fraternity serving as Chaplain, Vice President of Health and Safety, Risk Manager, T-shirt Chair, Philanthropy Chair and Event Coordinator. He also worked in the Office of Student Affairs for three years, serving on the Student Court as an investigator, and competed on the college sporting clays team as President and Captain. He won the Ducks in the Desert National Classic in Las Vegas in March of 2022. He also served as the Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the college’s Fly-Fishing Club. E Wright Williams (’16) is a senior at The Lovett School. He received the award for the top Humanities student at the Underclass Awards Ceremony. He is captain of the speech team, president of the pop culture club, and serves as a mental health liaison. Wright is happy to share with others about what it

means to be dyslexic and all that The Schenck School taught him. F Claire Hobbs (’17) is a freshman at Holy Innocents’ and on the varsity volleyball team, as well as a national volleyball team. She travels to compete in tournaments and has won many academic awards. She also coaches and volunteers every weekend.

Isaac Rankin (’18) attends The Galloway School. He enjoys sailing and amateur photography and is on the summer golf team. He also holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He sailed in nationals in San Diego this summer.

Abigal Morrison (’17) graduated form PLC Croydon in Sydney, Australia in 2022. She had a leadership role in school as House Captain. She attends Australia National University, where she is studying commerce. G Bhargav Kantamneni (’19) fondly remembers his time at Schenck and made great friends. He has a great bond with his Schenck friends Quinn, Nate, and Ian. In fact, Quinn and Bhargav just came back from an eighth grade European trip and had a great time.

Max Frushtick (’20) attends The Galloway School and is on the basketball team with dreams of being in the NBA one day. Max says “Schenck made me better understand vocabulary and is still helping me.”

Sasha Mladenoff (’20) attends The Atlanta Girls School and was recently in an art show there. Sasha says that Schenck “...helped me love reading again.”

Carolyn Collins (’20) attends The Atlanta Girls School, is a competitive swimmer, and is in the process of teaching swim lessons. She also has a crochet business.

He says, “The Schenck School helped me by helping me learn how to read.”

Ezra Cohen (’22) is in third grade at Atlanta Jewish Academy. He says that “The Schenck School made reading easier and a lot more fun!”

Hayden Hicks (’22) attends Woodward Academy and enjoys playing in a band and taking guitar lessons. Hayden says, “I’m a stronger reader and [I am thankful] for Mr. Eric, who inspired my love for music. I wouldn’t be in a band if it wasn’t for you!”

Mary Edwards (’22) attends The Lovett School, where she plays softball, and she also plays travel ball. She is excited to turn 13 and go to New York City for her birthday.

brief A Message from the Board of Trustees Chair Dear Friends of the School, The following report chronicles the resounding success of both The Schenck School’s academic operations and of ReadSource, our community outreach arm. It also celebrates the hard work of our students, as well as the unwavering support of our parents, alumni, and every member of our school community.

The 2022-2023 school year marked the return to normal in-person operations under the leadership of our Interim Head of School, Bill Wharton. I am particularly grateful for Bill’s steady hand that allowed both the school and ReadSource to thrive during this time of significant transition. With Bill at the helm, the Board of Trustees was able to focus fully on the task of finding our permanent Head of School.

We completed our search for our new Head of School with the hiring of Dr. Kara Loftin. Our quest for the ideal leader took over a year and a half, and the process was far-reaching and targeted. The result was someone whose professional experience and educational background were ideal, and whose warmth and enthusiasm impressed all who met her.

Among many other academic credentials, Dr. Kara holds a Ph.D. in Special Education. She brings over 25 years as an educator and school administrator, most recently serving as Head of School for The Craig

School in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, a school with a similar mission to our own. Most importantly, Dr. Kara has a genuine passion for serving children with learning differences and is quite simply one of the loveliest people I have ever met.

The installation of our sixth Head of School is a watershed event for The Schenck School community, and the Board of Trustees is elated to have found in Dr. Kara someone so ideally suited to lead us into our next promising chapter. As we welcome Dr. Kara, we want to express our deep gratitude to Bill for providing the bridge in leadership between our treasured past and our exciting future. I also want to offer on behalf of the Board, our deepest thanks to our exceptional faculty and staff whose dedication and support has been outstanding in this time of change.

As I complete my term as Chair of the Board of Trustees and turn leadership over to Jeffrey Wright, I want to say what a great honor it has been to serve this school that personally means so much to me. I am especially grateful to all of you who have done so much to support the School and ReadSource as they work to transform the lives of our children.

Introducing Jeffrey Wright The Schenck School proudly announces Jeffrey Wright ’88 as our new Board Chair. In addition to Jeffrey being an alumnus of the School, his three children also flourished within our halls. For close to a decade, Jeffrey has been an unwavering supporter of both The Schenck School and ReadSource.

Jeffrey’s journey into leadership started as a founding member of the Alumni Board, where he passionately connected alumni to David Schenck’s mission. As a trustee, he took on pivotal roles like Committee Chair for Risk, Secretary, and Vice Chair. Jeffrey’s extensive experience in guiding governance of The Schenck School, coupled with his dedication to Mr. Schenck’s mission, positions him perfectly as our Board Chair.

Jeffrey’s commitment to the advancement of dyslexia education and awareness goes beyond his leadership roles at The Schenck School; his contribution to the book “Creative Learners,” shared advice his children received when learning they were also dyslexic.

The Schenck School and ReadSource are fortunate to have Jeffrey Wright’s steadfast leadership. His journey—from student to alumnus, parent, and now trustee—reflects a deep dedication to our success. As Board Chair, Jeffrey’s vision and passion for our beloved school are poised to steer us to new heights.

Doughnut Parties

In September we kick off our Parent Annual Fund Challenge. This three-week challenge is lead by dedicated parent volunteers from all grades. The goal is for 100% of the families to make a gift to the Annual Fund. For the second year in a row, we were able to achieve this fabulous milestone. Alumni Annual Fund On March 23, 2023, The Schenck School held its third annual Alumni Day of Giving chaired by Caroline Wildman ’84. The Alumni Day of Giving was started to help reconnect our alumni with the School. The success of this event is evident by the numbers. Since its inception in 2020, alumni participation in the Annual Fund has increased 76%.

Although this is called the Alumni Day of Giving, we also encourage Parents of Alumni to give on this day and appreciate those past parents who stepped up to participate.

On February 24, 2023, our annual Auction & Gala was held at The Atlanta History Center. With about 300 guests attending, we had a terrific time raising money for The Schenck School, and our “fund a need” once again benefitted our outreach branch, ReadSource. Endowed Funds Endowed funds provide important security for an independent school—now and in the future. The more dependable and predictable the sources of income, the greater the stability and flexibility of the school.

Janet & Martin Schenck Scholarship Fund

Janet and Martin Schenck were David Schenck’s aunt and uncle. A letter dated May 10, 1966 (seven years after David and Dee founded the School), states: “It gives me great pleasure to send you the enclosed check to use in any way you and the Trustees wish for The Schenck School. Not only am I interested because of my regard for you but because, as somewhat of an educator, I am concerned that experimental schools going into new fields such as this one, should have an opportunity to make their great contribution.” With this in mind, the Board of Trustees chose to establish a financial aid endowment.

Nan T. Schenck Endowment

The fund was established in 1982 and named for David Schenck’s mother. The family’s intent was to establish a general endowment to ensure the continued success and financial stability of the School. In 2017, a substantial sum from the will of Emeritus Trustee William “Bill” C. Hatcher was added to this endowment.

The Faculty Endowment Fund

The fund was established in 1998 during the Schenck 2001: The Next Generation Capital Campaign. It is intended to support new leadership and new programs, including music, recreation, and technology.

Building Endowment Fund

In April 1990, a gift was received from a foundation that wishes to remain anonymous. The funds are considered a permanent capital asset and restricted to capital maintenance.

The Goizueta Scholarship Fund

In 2002, The Goizueta Foundation established and endowed The Goizueta Foundation Scholarship Fund to provide need-based financial assistance annually to Schenck School students with preference for Hispanic/Latino students.

David and Dee Schenck Scholarship Endowment

The Board of Trustees established this fund in 2003 in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Schenck;s retirement after more than 50 years of distinguished and extraordinary service to the educational community, particularly in the field of dyslexia.

Cam Street Scholarship Fund

Cameron Street, an alumnus of the School, son of faculty member Janet and her husband Bruce, and brother of alumna Courtney (CoCo), died in December 2009 after battling cancer for several years. This fund was established by the family for the purpose of financial aid.

Gena Calloway Endowed Fund for Professional Development The fund was established by the Board of Trustees in 2014 in honor and recognition of Gena’s retirement as head of school.

The purpose of the fund is restricted to support current faculty and staff education and training opportunities.

The Shults Family Endowed Fund for Financial Aid The fund was established in 2017 by gifts from the Shults and Julian families to ensure that financial need will not be a barrier to attending The Schenck School.

Georgia Private School Tax Credit The Qualified Education Expense Credit program (a.k.a. Georgia Private School Tax Credit) was passed into law in 2008 through HB 1133. Georgia tax payers can make a tax credit contribution to support educational opportunities for families seeking educational alternatives to the public school option. The School has partnered with state registered SSO, Apogee, to provide a dollar-for-dollar GA tax credit against their state income tax liability.

Through further legislation over the past fifteen years, the tax credit cap now stands at $120 million with increased maximum contribution amounts for nearly every individual taxpayer. In addition to individuals receiving a tax credit, pass-through taxpayers can contribute up to $25k and C-Corps and S-Corps who elect to fund GA tax liability through the entity can allocate the cost of funding the approved tax credit as an expense against revenue, reducing taxable income on their Georgia return by 5.75%.
