In a Time of Turmoil, SBHS Responds

On November 9th at 7 AM, I woke up to eight of the same messages: “SBHS ALL SCHOOL WALKOUT TODAY AT 12!! PARTICIPATE TO STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH ALL PEOPLE WHO WILL BE HARMED BY THE PRESIDENCY OF DONALD TRUMP. SEND TO AT LEAST 5 CLASSMATES (meet at senior lot for a walk to sunken gardens).” By 8:30 AM, the whole school was buzzing.

Whispers of the walkout were heard throughout 1st period and seminar, and almost all of the school was on board with the walkout. The peaceful protest was planned by our school’s own “Ethnic Studies Now” program.

Faculty found out before the walk took place, but there were very minimal changes to the plan. We would have to be escorted by police, which I was completely in favor of due to safety concerns, and some faculty would walk with us.

Of course some stayed at school, for various reasons; some had crucial classes to attend (understandable), others were supporters of Trump (also pretty understandable), and others accepted the thought that Donald Trump was our elected president so there’s nothing we millennials could do about it (also incredibly understandable).

But others believed in their hearts that participating in the walkout would help bring our school together, as we walked down Anapamu to the Sunken Gardens. Personally, I decided the walkout was something I needed to do. As a woman, a great supporter of the LGBTQA+ community, and an advocate of minority rights in our community, this walkout was the place for me to visibly demonstrate my thoughts, quite angry ones I might add, on the election.

uphill battle, but by the time the crowd of students massed onto the green grass, spirits had risen again. Students from the “Ethnic Studies Now” program gave empowering speeches that revolved around some of the same central ideas: transgender rights (and LGBTQA+ equality in general), women’s rights, minority rights, anti-deportation, and other topics that Trump and Pence have some very strong opinions on. Each speech was incredible, articulate, and well thought out; I couldn’t have been more proud to be a Don than in those moments. We chanted, sang, and spread positivity for our futures as millennials under his “rule”.

All was well and peaceful until a few Trump supporters showed up. Personally, I had no problem with them observing respectively as long as they kept their remarks to themselves and tried to learn from all of the kindness and compassion being spread. There wasn’t any sort of issue until one of the walkers pointed out the Trump supporters and called them disrespectful for showing their non-support at our rally, questioning their attendance. This sparked many students to yell at the Trump supporters “F*** Trump,” and some even went up to the group to try and figure out what they were doing at the rally in the first place. To me, this is when we could’ve come together as a community instead of having conflicts with people we may not agree with. Yes, afterwards, the Trump supporters made rude comments and were completely disrespectful towards some of their classmates, but how are we supposed to grow as a community, no, as a nation, if we cannot accept each other’s differences? One of Hillary’s platforms was “Love Trumps Hate”, and if we’re really with her, we will learn to love and accept our differences and heal

as a nation. Yes, Trump being president will effect me directly, but we do live in a democracy.

We all share the same country and have to find some way to create safe, peaceful environments instead of hateful ones. I do believe the “Ethnic Studies Now” leaders handled the situation appropriately and in the best way they could. In no way am I defending the Trump supporters for their actions or what they’ve said in the past, but we (as a student body) could’ve made more of an effort to remain calm instead of giving into the hate that has come with this election season, even if it was just for a split second. I am utterly devastated that people in my own school support someone who wants to force their LGBTQA+ peers to attend conversion therapy, or deport some of their closest friends, but we need to have civil conversations with one another instead of yelling until one of us stops. Yelling at each other just makes the conversation louder, it doesn’t get the point across more effectively.

To close the ceremony, we had a moment of silence to “breath in kindness and exhale all of the hate.”

Leaving all of our pessimistic thoughts and hate from election night prior to the walk at the Sunken Gardens, we walked back to SBHS with hope and optimism for our futures in this country.

Overall, the walkout was a complete success.

Students gained insight into their president elect’s policies and had a chance to support one another. As I said before, I have never been more proud to be a Don. This rally showed that we DO have a voice and it DOES matter. Everybody Dance Now!

10 years ago, 14 year old Jackie Rotman went to Santa Barbara Dance Arts for a performance with some elementary school kids. Suddenly during the performance, the music went out. No one knew what to do, but Jackie didn’t stop dancing.

The rest ended up dancing with her on stage. That’s when young Jackie Rotman realized that kids who want to dance must have access to proper dance education. For the next year she worked with her high school team to create EDN!, a non-profit official organization, that gives free hip hop dance classes to kids who can’t afford it. EDN! became really well-known after being featured on America’s best dance group. That’s when EDN! spread to 14 different cities.

Unfortunately, at that point EDN! was just a campaign, organized by bunch of high school students. The EDN! team needed to find a professional adult. That’s when they hired Kelli Forman, the current official national program director of EDN! Kelli created a new dance class curriculum for kids based on hip hop culture. EDN! is now a national organization that supports not only dance, but any type of self-realization. They have classes in cities like Kansas City, Pomona, Chicago, New York, and of course, Santa Barbara. This organization keeps growing.

For a past 10 years they made a huge success in letting kids self express themselves through dancing and much more!

EDN! is great organization; it shows us that you don’t need to pay exorbitant fees to learn how to dance. Kids deserve a chance to learn how to dance. Money shouldn’t be an obstacle.

EDN! is always looking for new volunteers. And, of course, you can earn your community service hours for volunteering.

Dance classes usually take place in different houses, youth centers and schools. EDN! has their weekly program, like any other dance studio, and at the end of each quarter there is a performance for the parents to come watch. It’s really fun event people come there not only to dance, but to show their street art pieces. EDN! also provides master classes by such famous and talented dancers like Jackie Lopez, Kid David, Tiffany Bong and others. This year’s holiday performance on the 9th of December is going to take place at the Westside Boys & Girls Club on Anapamu Street at 5:30pm. EDN! invites everyone to this donation-based event. A Westcoast Thanksgiving

As Halloween comes to a close this November and the holiday season approaches, we all sit back and watch as festive treats flood onto grocery store shelves and coffee shops all over America. But we can’t forget about the major holiday settled straight in the middle of now and Saint Nick… Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is a time for getting together with family and friends, eating amazing food and most of all, giving thanks. Different people celebrate this historical day in many ways. Some families travel to places like Hawaii or Mexico, while twenty year old college students get together to have misfit Thanksgiving dinners for people who live far from home. Living in a somewhat diverse place like Santa Barbara, there are many different Thanksgiving traditions represented.

Whether you’re having the traditional potatoes and turkey, throwing

a Mexican spin on your meal or having a family pot-luck, many of the SB locals like to buy most of their ingredients from the farmers market. Yes, it’s expensive and yes, there are less options than a grocery store but our rich, hippy community loves the farmers market. Another option, if your family isn’t planning on making a homemade meal, is going out. There are lots of restaurants that provide a Thanksgiving dinner, like The Bacara Resorts restaurant, The Angel Oak. Not everyone gets the chance to eat their Thanksgiving dinner while looking out at the Channel Islands.

If you have a large, active family, a lot of the time you end up playing football in your backyard or up at the Mission Rose Garden while your turkey is in the oven. But there are many other options for an active family, like the ZeeBlu Thanksgiving Day Run. Runners can sign up for a 5K, 10K or if you’re 12 and under, you can participate in a kids Fun Run. Registration is still open

if you’d like to participate! It’s 35 dollars for adults, 20 dollars for teenagers 18 and under and free for children under 12. What a way to burn enough calories so you can pig out at dinner time! If you’d like to go out but aren’t up for running a few extra miles, go visit the Santa Barbara Zoo as they give the animals their own Thanksgiving celebration. The SB Zoo Pumpkin Smash is when all the animals are given pumpkins and visitors simply watch what happens. I’m sure the animals get more out of this than we do, but it doesn’t hurt to go watch!

We are lucky to live in such a beautiful, warm place, so make the most of it! Go have a picnic at the Rose Garden or the beach. Pack a turkey sandwich and hike up to Inspiration Point! Or if you’re a lazy teenager like me, sleep in and watch the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade. Just make sure you have fun and give thanks. Happy Thanksgiving and have a great week off guys!

Disney and Diversity: Debut of A Princess

In the past, American media has suffered from a lack of diversity. We often lack representation of different sexualities, gender identification, and especially race in TV and movies. Young women for many years were surrounded by the same old woman: tall, slender, blonde and white.

Children’s TV actresses, famous pop stars and even Disney princesses all had the same look, and created an expectation for young girls that was often impossible to achieve.

Thankfully, though a long and painfully slow process, this has gotten increasingly better.

Disney, in 1992, created the film Aladdin featuring their first princess of color, Jasmin.

This sparked more and more women of color to be featured in blockbuster movies as leading roles serving as an inspiration for young girls everywhere.

We are excited to tell you that Walt Disney Pictures will be releasing a new princess movie on the 23rd of November

entitled Moana. Moana is a Polynesian tribal princess: the first Pacific Islander princess that the Disney corporation has featured. She will most definitely be a strong role model for young women, as she is a navigator and daughter of a tribal chief. Even before the movie hit theaters, young girls dressed as Moana for Halloween, excited that there was finally a princess who resembled them.

Young girls need women to look up to in their lives, and often find it easier to look up to someone who reminds them of themselves or their family members.

Actresses in TV have similar hobbies to young women such as music, dance or sports.

Even the American Girl Doll company provides many different characters who look different and have unique personalities that relate to many different kinds of girls.

Princess Moana is just another inspirational character to add to the list of diverse female role models.

Of course, the film will contain its classic Disney features, like spontaneous

singing and maybe even a slightly romantic subplot, but all in all, bringing this new face to the big screen will send out waves of inspiration to all generations.

Spotlight on the Bulletin

Lights. Camera. Action. It really is a whole process that goes into making the Santa Barbara High School Bulletin. If you don't already know, the bulletin is a once a week, student produced video that informs you about news around Santa Barbara High such as: upcoming events, things that are happening with your counselor, ASB updates, and sporting events that have happened the week before. It also has ads and commercials that can be helpful to students all around school. Every bulletin is about ten minutes long and is shown in third period every Friday, if your teacher decides they want to show it. If not, the episodes can be accessed on YouTube under the C2AN channel.

The bulletin is an elective made up of two periods called: Video Production and Advanced Video Production. Advanced Video Production is a little more hands on (hence the name) and they do a lot more editing of the videos and that is the period where all the filming takes place while Video Production is more of just learning how to edit videos instead. Sophomore, Sofie Ziouani, is in Advanced Production and when asked what her main role was she responded with “I come up with the video ideas, then I star in the videos, then I edit the videos which depending on the length of the video could take about one class period or two in order to edit the whole thing.”

The Bulletin was created over twenty years ago and the head teacher, Douglas Caines, says that it was even around when he was in high school back in ‘96. The staff of reporters and editors is made up of all grades, however, one of the most recognizable and honorary members of the bunch is, senior, Te’ Marie Lionello. Te’ Marie has been one of the lead reporters for almost her whole high school career. She loves The Bulletin and thinks that the best thing about is that it's student made and it's something that all students from different backgrounds can work on together, and it really does feel like a real workplace.

If this is something you think you’d be good at or just wanna to try it is definitely something you should talk to your counselor about, it’s an exciting elective that also counts for art credits, so if your teacher doesn't get the chance to show you in class make sure to check it out on YouTube!

Black Thursday?

If you’re an American, you probably know the tradition of Black Friday. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving where most large department stores have huge, blow-out sales that can climb all the way up to 90% off. Of course, this tradition was sparked because of the commercialization of Christmas. And, as we all know, as soon as the turkey is finished, the tree and tinsel are up and Christmas is on full blast. But since when was Christmas all about the gifts? Yes, I know, half of you are rolling your eyes because in the 21st century, Christmas is really focused on the presents. But it wasn’t always like that…

The first Black Friday was in 1932, when stores like Macy’s opened their doors very early to shoppers ready to buy their Christmas gifts before everything sold out. But as time went on, this tradition blew up. Now, almost every single store offers some type of sale so super-moms can rush into stores

at the crack of dawn to get the one overly expensive toy on their child’s Christmas list. Weeknight TV shows often joke about crazy Black Friday attendees, injured shoppers, and wild moms- trust me, these things really do happen. People camp out overnight on sidewalks for cheap iPhones and discount Prada bags, which looks slightly crazy to a casual consumer. I love to shop, and I think sales are great, especially during the Christmas season for families who can’t always afford lots of gifts but, in my opinion, Black Friday starts to get out of hand when it spills over into Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a completely different holiday than Christmas. To most people, there is a fine line between the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, so why must big corporations soil one holiday to promote themselves? As the years go on, I see more and more ads for the notorious Black Friday sale… starting Thursday, November 24th. Nothing says “give thanks” more than mowing down other people in public for a slightly cheaper XBox, am I right? Forget the

turkey, forget the stuffing, forget Thanksgiving completely and head right on to Christmas! I’m not blaming anyone who participates in pre-Friday Black Friday sales, just asking the big department stores to slow their engines. Everyone wants to buy gifts, and everyone wants a sale, but why can’t we wait one more day?

Not all counties jump the gun like big cities do.

In fact, some places give workers Thanksgiving Day off, making it impossible to open your doors at four in the morning for a sale. Humans tend to rush things. We rush through homework, roll through stop signs and quite apparently, rush straight through a major American holiday.

This Thanksgiving, please slow down and notice what you already have instead of thinking about what you “need” to get.

Unfortunately, I don’t think any stores will hold back on Black Friday sales this year, but slowing down and spending time with family and friends is the best way you can spend this holiday season, including Thanksgiving!

Done Being Labeled

Although I wouldn’t compare Santa Barbara High School to just any stereotypical high school movie, we can’t deny the underlying truth of classic high school labeling. Throughout pop culture history we’ve become familiar with the band geeks, theater kids, jocks and popular girls… but does labeling stop after your high school dramedy comes to an end? To be blunt, no.

I personally have no experience as a high school graduate or fully functioning adult but, especially living in the suburbs, we kids are surrounded by a lot of different families and, if you think about it, lots of different moms. Admit it, you label your friends’ mothers: the soccer mom, the cool mom, even the strict mom. And maybe a simple adjective doesn’t affect the mature nature of a mother, but why discourage labeling in high school and not in the real world?

Everyday, teachers remind us to be kind to one another and to accept each other for who we are, which

means no labeling, no name calling, no bullying.

One would assume that our teachers were just giving us another lesson to use in the future- to be kind to one another.

So why do we spit mean comments at the female news reporters on TV or give our friends looks when we see a women dressed in something that isn’t to our taste? Are we expanding our high school stereotyping onto the real world rather than leaving childish behaviors in the past?

Women have it hard enough. Yes, it’s getting better day by day: chipping away at that glass ceiling and closing the wage gap inch by inch, but it’s still more difficult for women than it has to be. A common belief amongst teenage girls is that we need to stop “pinning women against women,” and I believe this is an extremely accurate statement. Every single day both women and men are judging women for things that simply don’t matter in the long run, such as how her hair looked that day, or how her makeup didn’t match her skin perfectly. You rarely hear men judging

each other on silly things such as hair and clothing.

People on social media find labeling and teasing people for how they look funny, even though it probably affects the person on the opposite end more than you would believe. Even celebrities and public figures have day to day lives and internal struggles. Even “soccer moms” have lives outside of driving their children to practice and being a “stay at home mom” is a serious job.

People are so much more than what they seem, and labeling them for their obvious characteristics is just a way of bringing teenage behavior into the real world.

Although SBHS seems small in comparison to the rest of the big world out there, spreading positivity here can create a huge difference in the lives of many people, especially women and young girls. Just remember, this isn’t High School Musical, so there’s no need for extra drama and stress! Positivity creates positivity.

Along with the presidential election of bad or worse, there comes a very controversial list of statements that require your community’s opinion, called propositions.

As you may already have seen, there have been multiple geofilters exclaiming “yes on blank” and “no on another blank” on snapchat, and according to the majority of Santa Barbara High School students, prop 64 is a very popular Y-E-S, legalizing weed. “But what about the other propositions?” you may ask.

Interested in your opinions, I decided to go around the school to multiple classrooms with a few hundred surveys, and handed them out to students of all ages. The students had the choice of claiming yes, no, or undecided on each proposition.

From requiring the use of condoms in pornographic films, to increasing the cigarette tax by $2.00 per pack, we had a variety of diverse responses.

On proposition 51, putting $9 billion into modernizing education and school, 78% of the students answered yes. This proposition was a big hit for lots of people concerned about our schools modernity; putting $9 billion in would potentially help modernize this school a little bit.

On prop 52, changing the charges for hospital fees, 49% of students answered yes. Due to multiple gun accidents that have occurred this year, a lot of citizens were unhappy about the hospital fees they were required to pay, but this also would decrease pay for doctors.

Only 16% of the total students I surveyed approved proposition

53,affecting projects that cost more than $2 billion. For those who voted yes, they wanted a voters approval before the public could issue more than $2 billion in in public infrastructure bonds that would require an increase in taxes or fees for repayment.

34% of students wanted conditions under legislative bills to be passed; for those who voted yes supported prohibiting the legislature from passing any bill until it has been in print and published on the Internet for 72 hours prior to the vote.

37% of students want the extension of personal income tax on incomes over $250,000, (prop 55). On proposition 56 , a staggering 82% of the students I interviewed wanted an increase of $2.00 per pack of cigarettes for tax. I would of thought this proposition would be a lot more controversial, mainly because smoking is quite a “tumblr” thing to do.

For proposition 57, which states that felons convicted of nonviolent crimes can be involved in juvenile trials, 30% of students said yes. This propositions gives criminals more chances and forgiveness to screw up; watch out for the 30%.

41% of the students I gave surveys to said yes on proposition 58, which promotes bilingual education in public schools. The other side of this argument was that parents and other community members didn’t want their children being secluded from those whose first language was English, which is understandable.

As for supporting advising the state’s elected officials to use their authority to overturn the Citizens United v. Federal Election

Commission decision, potentially through an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, (proposition 59), 41% of the students supported it.

The use of condoms in pornographic films had a balanced 45% of the students thinking it should be required.

This proposition was actually lost, America still doesn’t understand why so many people have AIDS. On proposition 61, which regulates the prescription drug prices, 32% of the students thought it should be. Veterans that suffer from PTSD, depression, or bipolar disorder were mainly against this, because they don’t want to pay more for something they need.

As for repealing the death penalty,(proposition 62), 74% of you were for it, this proposition was declined; we are still allowed to kill people because they killed people.

Background checks for buying guns, which is proposition 63, were popular amongst the students. 70% of the students wanted it. After Trumps’ win, this will probably be adjusted.

The most overwhelming vote was 94% of the students wanting the legalization of weed to be passed, proposition 64. As Snoop Dogg once said, “smoke weed everyday”.

Last but not least, grocery and carryout bags being monitored, around 50% of the students thought this should be passed.

This prop will somewhat help the environment; hopefully the other 50% were undecided.

In conclusion, we had a very successful ballot. A huge thanks goes out to those who participated!

Trump Trumps Clinton: Proof that America is Far, Far Away From Being Great Again

It happened. The nerve-racking, unfathomably ridiculous election came to its bitter, bitter close this past November 8. And we, the people of the United States of America, did the big bad thing. We elected Donald Trump!

There. I said it. It hurt.

Luckily( I guess?), as was made clear by the sheer volume of anti-Trump protests that occurred all over the country following the travesty of November 8, the Donald may have won over the underinformed struggling remnants of the working class and the elitist white-collar folk, but there are still plenty of civilized people in the United States who are less than pleased with the results of this election.

Even Santa Barbara High School got in on some of the antiestablishment racket that raged on post-results. As most of you know, a massive walkout was organized on November 9.

About four hundred students left school to protest the negative impact on minorities and women that Trump will likely have as Commander-in-Chief. The rally got a lot more interesting upon the arrival of a student in a Donald Trump tee-shirt.

Protesters did not see his arrival as a gesture of goodwill and an argument broke out between the Trump-supporter and essentially everyone else in attendance (with the exception of another Trump-praising student and a conservative adult bystander from off the street). Though police quickly responded and made efforts to neutralize the conflict, the two Trump-

supporting students soon after needed to be escorted away from the courthouse and took refuge from the public criticism in the police station. The student in the Trump tee-shirt later gave interviews for public news sources and tried to make himself out as if he were some kind of pariah for standing up for the rights bestowed to him by the First-Amendment.

Unlike many people believe, however, Trump’s actual election is not that big of a problem in and of itself. Unfortunately, the problem is much larger and more difficult to solve than that.

Despite the fact that many of us here in Santa Barbara did not vote for Trump, enough of our fellow Americans did. Trump is merely a symptom of the interminable difficulty that we face in the United States to squash the bigotry and sexism that have plagued us since the day that the first European set foot on North America. Americans chose a sexist, racist, homophobic, elitist, grossly unqualified, real-life American Psycho to lead.

No amount of protesting will change the fact that we live in a nation made up of enough distracted, lazy sheep to make a negative difference.

Additionally, under the Obama Administration, voters have allowed our government to grow into something frighteningly reminiscent of Big Brother (1984, George Orwell).

Now the citizens of the United States have gone and elected a man much less fit to control such an entity than Obama. Trump has more power than any other US president in history. With the NSA, CIA, FBI, and an arsenal of unconstitutional methods to violate our right to due process (implemented under the

false auspices of “fighting terror”, whatever that means) at his disposal, Donald Trump can essentially have any entity he views as a threat to his power removed from the picture quickly and quietly.

Trump also gets to choose at least one new Supreme Court Justice. This could mean the repeal of Roe V. Wade and a longer path to racial, religious, and gender equality in the United States.

I could go on all day discussing the bad that could come of a Trump presidency, but what good would it do?

The point is, we need to move forward towards a more free country. Protesting the president-elect after-the-fact doesn’t change perspectives. If it does anything, it gives Trump-voters validation that they chose to support an “outsider” instead of the popular choice. We need to work to topple the system of near-constant surveillance and corporately dominated politics and media. The system that people claim was working “against” Trump is in reality the very reason he was elected.

It’s time to get cynical. Just because the bad guys won does not mean we all have an excuse to lie down and die. We need to accept that Trump is the president of one of the most powerful nations in the world. Now we all know that the government is a mere extension of the institutions of wealthy privilege and white male supremacy. And there is no excuse for us to accept that.

Get out there and start dismantling this corporately prostituted world superpower. Defeat is temporary.

Thanksgiving Affected by the Dakota Pipline

Oh Thanksgiving. Most of us look forward to the food and dread the awkward conversation with that “aunt” you’re pretty sure isn’t related to you in the slightest. A quick summary of your first grade education: the first Thanksgiving was a three day harvest festival in 1621, attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. This was one of the first big peaceful gatherings that symbolized the start of a new world. Well, this is what your elementary school teacher would have you believe. I can’t speak for everyone but I was never taught how the relationship between Native Americans and Pilgrims was actually extremely violent. Ever since we “discovered” the new world, Native Americans have suffered. They were massacred and tricked, they weren’t allowed to practice their religion, and their land was taken from them. In 1830 the Indian Removal Act was passed, a policy that permitted the US federal government to forcibly remove Native people from areas populated by white settlers. One of the biggest examples of this is the infamous Trail of Tears. Thankfully in 1934 the Indian Reorganization Act was passed, which laid out new rights for Native Americans. It encouraged tribal sovereignty and land management by tribes.

In the following 20 years, over 2 million acres were returned to various tribes. My point is that we supposedly have given Native Americans their rights but there is a caveat: recently, there has been a controversial issue that contradicts that idea.

The Dakota Access pipeline will be an approximate 1,172 mile, 30 inch diameter pipeline that will connect the expanding Bakken and Three Forks production areas in

North Dakota to Patoka, Illinois. It will transport nearly 470,000 barrels per day. It will cross beneath the Missouri and Mississippi rivers as well as Lake Oahe near Standing Rock Indian Reservation, which is one of the reservations where the Sioux tribe lives. The Sioux Native American people argue the pipeline will disturb various ancestral sites including stone circles and sacred ground. The sites are technically just North of the Sioux territory but they argue that that land was taken from the illegally in a series of treaties in 1850s-1860s. The tribe also points out that if the pipeline leaks, it would contaminate the majority of their drinking water. They also claim that the US government approved the pipeline without consulting them, which is a requirement under US law. The Sioux started their protest in April, and they set up Sacred Stone spiritual camp near the river. The many many protesters include environmental activists, citizens supporting the cause, Sioux and over 200 Native American tribes have joined to show solidarity with the Sioux. It is the largest coming together of indigenous people in decades, possibly centuries. Several celebrities have also showed their support by joining the protesters, such as Mark Gruffalo, Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein and Shailene Woolley who live streamed her arrest at the protest.

Although the Native Americans have committed to peaceful unarmed protests, several demonstrations have turned violent. A Colorado woman fired three shots in the direction of police as officers sought to forcibly remove protesters camped on private property. The woman was arrested and has been charged with attempted murder.

I guess my point is, isn’t it messed up that people are

insisting that we give the people actually native to this land their rights yet we somehow find it completely fine to build yet another pipeline that could have huge repercussions? If people want to say it’s ok to build the pipeline because it’s technically not on the land that belongs to the Sioux then fine, but you can’t deny that if something happens and we have another oil spill, their entire water supply is at risk of being contaminated. This wouldn’t only hurt the tribe but also hurt all the animals that share that water supply. Forget individual rights for a second; don’t you find it incredible that the majority of us know the risks of climate change yet we continue to tolerate this type of destruction? It doesn’t matter what the color of your skin is, or what your religion is or what your cultural background is, we all live on the same planet. This affects us all. If it’s ok to put an entire tribe’s water source at risk then where is the line drawn? The fact is that this is just like the first Thanksgiving.

We are all told that this is peaceful and beneficial for all but in reality, people end up sick and decimated. I cannot say that I know everything about this subject. Prior to this article, I had never studied or read about the rights Native American tribes have today. All I know is that this is not right, and no amount of money could make this right. Eventually we are all going to have to face the consequences of our decisions, despite the amount of money you have or anything else we think sets us apart. We all share this planet: we should all respect the people living on it.

Taking a Stand at SBHS

A Glass Castle Review

The Glass Castle is a 2005 memoir written by Jeannette Walls. Although it was published eleven years ago, it has only become recently popular. The Glass Castle is the narrative of a child who tells the true story of how she was mistreated, while simultaneously attempting to understand, forgive, and even love the person who mistreated her.

Jeannette Walls spins great stories from bad memories. Though it is a true story, both the writing style and the way Walls reminisces about her childhood makes it

seem like more of a fairy tale.

Personally, I would rate this book 7.5 out of 10. This book really made me think about family relationships. Just ask yourself, “What would you do if you saw your homeless mother rummaging through a dumpster on a street in NYC?” This book shows that human personality is not that simpleit has a lot of layers, each layer being more complicated than previous one. For me “The Glass Castle” is story of a girl that tried to look deeper in to things; she tried to understand her family’s actions and maybe even forgive them. However, I feel that something is missing

there, something that would make a reader smile. Isn’t that the main point of reading a book? Even in 7 life of darkness, there must be some light.

The Glass Castle is a remarkable book of resilience, redemption, and a revelatory look into a deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant family.

We will soon be able to see the film adaptation of this beautiful book.

Lionsgate acquired the film rights from Paramount and Brie Larson is set to play Jeannette Walls as filming began May 20, 2016 in Welch, West Virginia.

Emotions are raging on both sides since the 2016 presidential election results. The seams which once kept America’s social, political, and economic differences together are slowly splitting apart. To me, the fear is most prominent. As a woman, I am fearful. As a religious minority, I am fearful. As a first generation American (someone who knows the struggle of immigration), I am fearful. And, as someone who will have to deal with the repercussions of this administration for far longer

than the generation who voted, I am fearful. While I understand that accepting the president-elect and moving forward are what need to be done, accepting what Trump stands for is something I can never do.

His xenophobia reaches above and beyond: calling Mexicans criminals, rapists and drug dealers, accusing Muslims of being terrorists by virtue of their religion, insulting the disabled, and releasing anti-semitic propaganda. This type of rhetoric capitalizes on the concerns of uneducated and/ or desperate Americans.

Pathetically, Trump gives his supporters license to be

cruel to the other. But, in one way or another, aren’t we all the other?

I don’t have a solution for our country’s current state of turmoil and distress. But, allow me to remind you of this: our country has had its best moments when, as a nation and a people, we have come together to fight for what is right. While one person is strong, and two people are even stronger, 300 million people are unstoppable.

Together, we are capable of greatness. I call upon all of us to look past our differences, and join as the “united” states we were meant to be.

Crude Happens: Censorship Really Flipping Stinks

After the release of our last issue, it was brought to our attention that some of our journalists used swear words in their articles. This was an honest mistake on the part of the editors. However, the concerns raised over the use of expletives in the Forge forced us to consider the question: where do we draw the line on school newspaper-appropriate language?

Well, adults have basically been telling us that the First Amendment doesn’t apply to minors since the Constitution was ratified all those years ago. This is false on its face. It is true that there has been controversy surrounding students’ rights to free speech while at school. In general, the decision about whether students are using appropriate language is left up to the

discretion of their teacher. That means that there is an element of ambiguity as to what kind of language is acceptable at school.

For example, if our journalist had pulled the same kind of stunt in Kansas or Alabama, he would likely be facing much harsher consequences than he is here in Santa Barbara.

There is something to be said for abolishing censorship in any of its oppressive forms. Despite the fact that some people might condemn swearing as a weak measure taken by inarticulate people to feign conviction and power in conversations with more intelligent people, swearing does actually serve a purpose in civilized society as well. See, sometimes words just don’t carry enough meaning by themselves. You can say the same thing a hundred brainy ways and still not capture its true essence. Sometimes the positive

and negative connotations that swear words carry contribute to their strength as linguistic tools. When young people are censored superfluously by adults based on old-fashioned standards, they stop using the valuable tools and functions that swear words have become. Maybe that causes young people to converse like world-class scholars. Or maybe it just makes them speak like dull, indecisive followers.

Censorship isn’t protecting us from the harshness of the real world anymore. Plenty of teachers actually curse in class. The fact that it’s taken this long for a swear word to find its way into the Forge is amazing. Let’s lift the ban on free speech, even in high school newspapers.

Killing Us Softly: How Beauty Standards Are Wrecking the American Females Youth

We’re tired of these beauty standards. Judging people for wearing makeup, or not enough. Associating certain fonts with gang related violence. Sexualizing shoulders? Come on people, it’s time for a change.

Even beauty gurus are tired of men (and women) setting the standard for people to wear makeup when they have a pimple or look too tired. Youtube makeup star “NikkieTutorials” recently released a makeup palette in collaboration with the brand “Too Faced.” The whole idea behind the palette was to create wearable makeup to enhance beauty and inspire confidence. Nikkie has been doing makeup since she was a teenager and realizes the struggles of beauty standards as a young woman. Although her job is surrounded by makeup, she believes that makeup isn’t a necessity and that feeling beautiful without it is more important. This shows that even celebrities who are “required” to wear makeup have had problems with the pressure to wear it in the past.

People all over the world experience the negative effects of beauty standards on their self confidence. Even I won’t go to school without a little concealer. Teachers have been drilling this belief into us as well. Dress-codes that prohibit

young women to show their shoulders in class or wear shorts that may go past their middle finger when standing straight make little girls insecure of their bodies from the time they’re in kindergarten up into adulthood. Only recently have I stopped shopping for dress-code when I go “back-to-school-shopping” and started dressing for myself and what I want to wear.

Not to only focus on the problems that girls face, guys don’t necessarily have it easy either. If guys pants are too baggy, administration automatically labels them as a delinquent instead of just seeing them for the person they are. If this were the 90s, the whole student body would be wearing their pants”too low” and no one would think twice because it’s “just the times.” Additionally, guys feel the pressure to work on their fitness and be “built.” Especially in Santa Barbara where most of us are extremely health-crazed, it must be difficult to feel that you always need to have a six-pack or be participating in sports throughout the year.

The pressure to be perfect can drive teens insane and even carry into their adulthood.

I think it’s time to start accepting our flaws and stop pressuring ourselves to follow social norms.

Puttin' on the Ritz: Young Frankenstein "Best Show in Town"

Whether you came to support a friend, enjoy a wonderfully crafted musical, or experience a scare in the spirit of Halloween, SBHS’s production of Young Frankenstein did not let you down. The young actors of SBHS guided the audience through a story of creation, destruction, love, and family on the opening night of this wacky play. Originally written by Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks in 1974, the play focuses on Frederick Frankenstein, played by the talented Ben Zevallos, as he travels back to Transylvania after the news of his grandfather, Victor Frankenstein’s (Drewes McFarling), death. The villagers fear of Frederick quickly becomes a reality when he takes the leap to pursue the family business with help from his Transylvanian companions, Igor (William Blondell), Inga (Hazel Brady), and Frau Blucher (Lily Linz.) Many conflicts arise, including a foreign fling between Frederick and Inga, despite Fredrick having a fiancée back home, Elizabeth Benning (Sarina Wasserman.)

The original Young Frankenstein, featuring Madeline Kahn and the recently passed Gene Wilder is a hilarious comedy for all generations, although it’s definitely not suitable for younger audiences. It not only won 10 different awards in its day

but was also nominated for two Oscars.

Director Otto Layman’s production on November 4th was surely an original.

The set was huge and stretched from wall to wall. The music and orchestra, directed by Jon Nathan, was perfectly timed and dramatic, and the costumes, designed by Bonnie Thor, captured the nuance of every character. Nothing screams “monster” the way ten inch high boots and a classic green face does.

What really kept the audience hooked was the unique charm of each character; Fredericks classic good looks and intelligence, Inga’s flirtatious tendencies, Igor’s comedic relief and Frau Blücher’s heartbreaking past and dedication to the Frankensteins. Every song performed gave a new feeling to the play. Whether they were lighthearted like “Roll In The Hay” and “Transylvania Mania,” meaningful like “Together Again for the First Time” and “The Brain,” or slightly sad like “He Vas My Boyfriend,” the audience opened their ears and were ready to listen to what every character had to say. One the crowd favorites was “Puttin On The Ritz,” performed by Frederick and the Monster himself, played by Cai Norton.

What stole the show in my eyes was the colossal set, designed by director Otto Layman and created by students in the stage production

crew. You would never expect this set to be on a high school stage; it truly looked like something straight off Broadway. The set changed constantly from the village to a luxurious living room to the enormous, dark basement where Frederick creates The Monster.

Platforms were lifted into the air, lightning and thunder cracked and functional trap doors swung open and closed. The decision to use projections throughout the play was very smart.

Trees in motion as we moved through the forest, locations, dates and even comedic puppets were cast behind the actors throughout the show, making the experience deeper and richer, despite the minor technical difficulties.

Even the houses built on the wings of the stage were fully functional, with villagers running down the steps and onto the stage at even the slightest hint of oncoming danger.

All in all, the many plot twists of Young Frankenstein kept us guessing up until the curtain call.

Audience members learned to try and accept everyone, including monsters and the people who create them, and that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Unfortunately, if you’re reading this, the world of Young Frankenstein has come and gone, but if you were lucky enough to join the actors on their journey, remember to congratulate them in the halls!

Christmas is Around the Corner Corner

November is upon us, which means for some people it’s Christmas! Commercials, stores, magazines, and social media are now Christmas-themed and Thanksgiving is once again glossed over. I love Christmas-themed songs, the decorations, movies, and the candles but it has now become a ploy to make money for many corporations. The United States’ retail industry generated over three trillion U.S. dollars during the holidays in 2013.

These holiday sales reflected about 19.2 percent of the retail industry’s total sales that year. Just over 768,000 employees were hired throughout the United States to compensate for the holiday rush. Christmas is a great holiday, celebrate it in your own way, and don’t react to the hype if it causes you anxiety. If you start celebrating it early then that’s great. Have fun, get a Christmas tree, hang up your stockings, crank up the holiday tunes, light some candles, and hang up your twinkle lights!

Artist of the Month: A View Through a Lense

Shifting our perspective on art this month, we decided to highlight a different sort of visual artist: the photographer. We ventured ove to Nopal Street, where we met Forest Dempsey. He is a sophomore here at SBHS. He is in the M.A.D. Academy, which focuses on the disciplines of digital imaging, graphic design, social media/web design,

digital photography, video editing, and video production. He became interested in photography about three years ago; “last year I got my first DSLR and started taking pictures on the weekends and it progressed”. He was inspired by the photographers around him and started out taking pictures of surfers and waves with his friends. He has now advanced to landscapes and portraits of people.

He plans to stay in the

M.A.D. academy and says it’s an awesome program and it offers many opportunities in the field. He told me he doesn’t know about college right now but it’s definitely a priority and he wants to focus on the visual arts. Forest uses a Canon 60d and right now he’s shooting with a 50 millimeter 1.4 lense, in addition he has a 17-40 and 100-600 lense.

Destined for Dance: A Community Review

For months we had been training. Getting in as many as extra rehearsals as possible and for a few of us, learning brand new choreography. Hi guys! My name is Corrick and I am a competition dancer on the newly formed dance team Destined Dance and Performing Arts. We practice at the Goleta Valley Community Center and our choreographer and coach is the talented Kendra McGary.

November 4-6 we attended Kids Artistic Revue. We competed seven solos, four hip hop solos and three contemporary solos.

We also competed two hip hop duets and one contemporary duet. I myself competed two contemporary solos and was in the contemporary duet. My first solo was called Bobinsky and I played a creepy clown/jester. The idea is that I’m becoming possessed and controlled by an evil force and go back and forth between being childlike and amusing and then dark and murderous. I won first place with this solo. My second solo was called Teenage Dream and it’s basically just about the excitement of falling in love for the first time. I’m sure some of you know what I’m talking about. The butterflies in your chest and the feeling you get when you see that person. For that solo I won top first in the category and I scored the second highest out of everyone on our team who competed.

Enough about me; let’s talk about my amazing teammates! Jaylia McGary showcased a contemporary solo called Egyptian Lover. It was a high energy dance that showed off her amazing natural flexibility and her tricks like ariels and rolls. She won first in her category. The next solo was 1,2 step performed by Milan McGary, Jaylia’s older sister.

She performed a high energy hip hop solo that she helped choreograph. It was super entertaining to watch and I know the judges enjoyed it because she won top first in her category and scored the highest out of our entire team. Then there was Hannah Beck, only 12 years old and taking the stage at her first competition with so much confidence. She performed a hip hop solo called Salute like Fire which was a mix between Just like fire by Pink and Salute by Little Mix. She worked so hard on this solo and was amazing. She hit the moves hard and her facial expressions could only be compared to Jojo Siwa’s. She worked so hard to get her splits for this competition and she

should be really proud of herself. She won first in the 12-14 Hip Hop category.

Now let’s talk about Sofia Gerli; other than being my best friend, she’s also an amazing dancer. She performed two hip hop solos. One to Trini dem Girls by Nicki Minaj: this was a high energy, and sassy routine that required a lot of facial expressions. I may be a little biased but I think she rocked it.

She won first in the 15-16 Hip Hop category. Her second solo was also hip hop and to the widely known song Panda. It required incredible footwork, technicality, and musicality. She won top first, but is insistent on continuing to work on it until it is perfect. She’s one of the most talented people I know and is going to be super successful in whatever she does because of that.

Moving on to our duets, our contemporary number was performed by Sofia Gerli and me. The song was a cover of Breakeven by The Script. I played the role of a girl struggling with depression and on the verge of suicide. Sofia played the role of an angel sent down to save the girl. We tried to embody the emotion of the situation; my character kept going back and forth from screaming for help and then pushing her away.

We won first in our category. Sofia and Milan competed in two hip hop duets. One to Get it Poppin’, which won the third highest point award in their division and a top first place trophy. Their second song was a mashup of Hard by Rihanna, The Motto by Drake and Where They From by Missy Elliott.

They played competitors for the top spot on a dance team so naturally, they had to be very sassy. They won first which was a great end to our competition weekend.

Other than competing, we took a few classes at the world renowned studio Millennium. This is the studio of the stars; Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, and many many more have all practiced at Millennium. Almost any amazing hip hop video you can find online has the Millennium trademarked Unity through Diversity sign in the background. We took two amazing hip hop classes, one with Natalie Gilmore and one with Leslie Scott. They were both really fast and pretty hard and I definitely looked like an idiot but it was such a fun positive experience. I feel so grateful that I got to take classes with some of the best up and coming dancers in LA.

Overall it was such a great experience. We bonded as a team and as friends. We are continuing to work a hard

and start a bunch of new and exciting dances and can’t wait until the next competition!

I am the only dancer at Destined Dance and Performing Arts from Santa Barbara High School so I encourage anyone interested in learning to dance or becoming part of a team to come join! No matter your age or skill level we encourage you to come try out a class! I hope to see some of you there!

Dodgeball TournamentUnderway

The SBHS Dodgeball Tournament is a huge event for the entire school, because everyone regardless of ability or experience has a chance to participate in the tournament. This year’s tournament started on November 14th and runs through November 18th, when the finals will be held. Although the season is short lived, it’s a lively event for the whole school. The purpose of the competition is to bring our school members closer together.

It also gives everyone the chance to join a very cool and entertaining sport.

Since its inception in

2013, the entire school has come to embrace this competition, and it has grown dramatically both in attendance and participation..

This year the school has 32 different teams participating,including; Nosotros, Aquamen, The Enthusiast, Team Europe, Throwing Shade, Rolf Doddie, Kinky Boys, The Misfits, ASBabes, FDT, Red Army, Pride + Prejudice, Aldos, Dream Team, T1, Global Gym, Ballerinas, Spooky Pigeons, Balls of Fury, The Printo Beans, Scrubs, The Kings, Ballsagna, Roque Rats, To be Determined, Shazam, Los Chapos, Muffin Stoppers, Raging

Mammoths, Gang Gang 100s, Balls out 4 Bantu, and Prime. The games are held in the main gym during lunch and all students are welcome to come watch as the different teams compete everyday.

I interviewed Tick Jellison, one of the main organizers of the event. “It’s just about bringing our school closer together with a fun event that anyone can join,” said Jellison.

I personally am betting on my friends, “Team Europe” but all the other teams have been competing well so far!

Make sure to come out and support the competition during lunch!

Athlete of the Month: Kailie McGeoy

Senior Kailie McGeoy is this month’s athlete of choice! Not only is she inspirational to all the younger female athletes at SBHS, but she will soon be making her mark at the collegiate level. McGeoy has committed to play water polo for Princeton after SBHS. Her journey to Princeton has been a chlorine-filled and long, but the outcome was definitely worth all of the hard work.

Aside from hanging out with friends and family, water polo has been McGeoy’s priority for a long time. McGeoy first started playing water polo when she was in 3rd grade, so she’s been competing for almost 10 years. To say water polo played a big part in her life would be an understatement. Water polo helped shape her character and create friendships with people she would’ve never known otherwise. As a student, it’s allowed her to set goals for herself and learn good time management skills.

Since beginning her high school career on the varsity team, to now being the only senior, McGeoy has noticed many differences in the program since freshman year: “It’s definitely a lot more pressure, especially since I’m the only senior on the team. A lot of the younger girls look up to me, so I just have to work a lot harder and there’s a higher standard for me.” When McGeoy was first accepted into Princeton, she couldn’t even believe that it was happening. “I was so ecstatic, I couldn’t believe it at first and it’s still kind of sinking in; but waterpolo has made this opportunity possible for me. I’m just so thankful.”

McGeoy plans to play water polo for all four years at Princeton.

This season, McGeoy hopes to build the team up to as strong as they were last year. She hopes the team will make it to CIF this year and beat their cross-town rivals, the San Marcos

Royals. This may be a bit difficult considering the devastating loss of so many key, senior players on the team, but McGeoy is hoping to build the team up stronger than ever! “We lost some pretty crucial seniors last year but we have a really good dynamic and a couple of freshmen who are really powerful,” commented McGeoy.

Congratulations to Kailie McGeoy for being our athlete of the month! Good luck to all of this year’s water polo players.

This year marks Todd Heil’s 18th year as the head coach of the boys’ varsity soccer team at SBHS. Going into this season, he has the same three ambitions he has always had: to win twenty games, accrue fifteen shutouts, and to win Channel League; he expects nothing less than a success, and this high expectation has created a culture of success at SBHS. Although last year’s team was quite triumphant, Heils wants all the boys to see themselves as a new team this year and not live in the glory of last year’s wins.

The senior players on this years team are Luis Alfaro, Isaac Botello, Francisco Fonseca, Sloan Hansen, Celso Lagunas, Magdaleno Mendoza, Sutter Muni, Alejandro Munoz, Tyler Munoz, Carlos Rodriguez, Alex Salcedo, Paulie Santana, and Juan Zarate. Their captains will not be chosen until before their first game on Monday, November 20.

They play Dos Pueblos at home on January 17 and away on February 7. They will also play San Marcos on January 21.

Due to most of the team graduating and going off to college, the girls’ varsity soccer team only has five returning players this season. To some people this would seem like a major setback, but not to head coach Jill Wolf.

With this new upcoming season, she plans to rebuild the team and take some time for the players to get to know each other and get comfortable together on the field. Although captains have not yet been picked, she foresees it to be a very competitive and successful season.

Not only is the team being retooled, but so is the emphasis on the whole girls’ soccer program, as they tried to grow a successful program and expand their reach into the community. Over the past couple of weeks, every girl participating in girls’ soccer has had to put out announcements on social media, whether it be Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc, saying that they participate in soccer at SBHS and that they are raising money for the program. So far they have raised tons of money for new uniforms and equipment.

Their first home game is against Rio Mesa on December 6, and they play our rival schools three times this season. They play Dos Pueblos on January 17 away, San Marcos at home on January 21, and Dos Pueblos again at home on February 7.

We talked to Girls Water Polo captain Kailie McGeoy, who will be attending Princeton next year, and will continue to play water polo for the next four years. We asked her what she is most looking forward to this season and she said, “I'm really looking forward to spending a lot of time with my teammates, having a bigger role on my team, and having a great last season to wrap up the last four years of playing on varsity before I go off to college.”

The Forge:“What schools will be the toughest opponents in order for you to win Channel League?”

Kailie: “San Marcos and Dos Pueblos will be the hardest opponents because they have really strong programs, but personally knowing the players of each school (because of club water polo in the off-season) will help us know how to tackle each game.”

I asked Coach Walsh what his expectations are for his team this season and he said, “I’m hoping that we will be top ten team in CIF and be competitive with a lot of the other really strong teams in our area. We have a really great senior, Kai, who will be going to Princeton next year and I’m hoping that she will be a great leader for us. We have a lot of really good returning players from last year, so I’m hoping that they will all fill in.

At Practice: Winter Sports Preview

We interviewed three of the four wrestling captains and asked what they are most looking forward to this season and how far they hope to go, both as a team and individually.

In the past,our girls basketball team had come close to winning CIF for their division,but not fully making it through. In 2014, things changed when the SBHS girls basketball team made it all the way to the championship for their division and the southern section.They ended up being runner-up for the state championship.

Coach Andrew Butcher has been with the SBHS girls basketball team for about 40 years. He said“ They [this year’s up-and-coming team] are a brand new team with brand new players. Many [players] weren’t here this summer, so we’re really going struggle early in the year. However, I think by the end of the year we’re going to be a really strong team.” The incoming freshmen, such as Maya Banks and Mireya Gil show superb skills. A prospective captain, Val Jaimes, commented “No Regrets!” By that she means with our high level of commitment and strong work ethic we are hopeful this will lead us to a good outcome this basketball season. Cassandra Gordon, another captain, says “Come to our game y”all!” Insisting that we all should go to the season’s first home game on November 21 against St. Joseph at 4:15pm. Come and support the team to see how they perform. As Kimberly Gebhardt puts it “Ball is life!”

David Bregante, the boys basketball coach, has been working at Santa Barbara High School for close to ten years. Last year he led the boys basketball team to the California Interscholastic Federation, CIF, championship. He is hoping to do the same thing as last year, and lead the team back to CIF. The boys basketball coach doesn't just teach basketball, he also tries to be a role model for the boys. He helps the team be responsible and accountable for their actions whether it is related to their academics or basketball, the boys are learning to be decent human beings.

He says he doesn't want his boys to make excuses, he wants them to behave the right way, and take responsibility for their mistakes.

David's Bregante’s life has been affected so much by basketball; it has given has given him a chance to coach the sport he really loves.

The boys basketball first home game is on November 22 against Righetti High School at 7:00pm. One of the team’s favorites is Ben Brown, who is also a captain. He quotes Muhammad Ali, “Float like a Butterfly, Sting like a Bee.” I think he wants to agree with Coach Bregante that the boy’s team “Play hard, play smart, and play together” -David Bregante.

The Forge:“What are you most looking forward to this season as the only senior on the team?”

“I want to go as far as I can and accomplish more goals than last year,” said Jonathan Cruz.

The Forge: “What schools will be the most difficult opponents to face this season?”

“Definitely Buena, Ventura, and Dos Pueblos.

Anyone but San Marcos,” Jon Huther and Josue Vallecio (juniors) agreed.

The Forge:“How far do you think you guys will go as a team and individually?”

“I believe that we have a chance at being league champs,” said Jonathan Cruz.

“Individually, we think that Jonathan Cruz, Josue Vallecio, Jose Herrera, and Jon Huther will go the furthest,”added John Huther and Josue Vallecio.

The Santa Paula Dual Meet will be at home on November 30th at 6:00 p.m. so make sure to be there!

Cubs Whoop Indians: Underdogs Battle for the Title in the World Series

And on the night of November 2, people watched as the two most renowned losing teams in American baseball duked it out for the championship. After a grueling season, the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians finally made it to the World Series. On the way there, they trampled the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Bluejays in the playoffs as well as just about every other major league team throughout the normal season.

In addition to the two main stage productions produced each year, the students of Santa Barbara High School take initiative each winter to produce a production of their own. Santa Barbara High School Theatre’s annual Broadway Revue, Music of the Night, has been a part of student culture at Santa Barbara High School for nearly two decades. The production, which is completely student produced, cast, directed, choreographed, and performed, consists of fourteen to sixteen different musical numbers from a wide variety of musicals ranging from classics like Chicago and West Side Story, to contemporary works like Hamilton and Wicked.

Music of the Night was created in 1999 by students Blake Berris, Ashley Rodgers, and Evan Hughes, as a way to celebrate student ownership of their theatre education.

What started as a little show to fill the long break between the Fall show and the Spring show, has become a full blown stage production yielding audiences just as large as the main stage productions with costume, set and light designs, and sophisticated videos.

least. This was the Cubs first Series since 1908. To put that into perspective, the Ottoman Empire still existed in 1908. World War I hadn’t even started yet. It was a hard-fought victory, to say the least. Many Chicago-natives rejoiced at the news of their team’s first victory in 108 years.

Though the game was too close for many fans’ comfort, the Cubs won 8-7 after an intense 10-inning game. The Cleveland Indians spent the first seven innings behind until a three-run rally in the eighth inning turned things upside down and put them in position for a potential victory. They held the Cubs in a tie for long enough to force the game into extra innings.

Since 2008, the student directors have enlisted the help of a musical director who has helped them coach the actors on their vocals and assemble a live band usually consisting of a combination of students and professionals from the Santa Barbara area. Over the years Santa Barbara musicians such as John Douglas, Richard Weiss, Lito Hernandez, and Jon Nathan have played the roll of musical director helping bring live music to Music of the Night. This year Jon Nathan and Sio Tepper will be heading the music direction of the show. Jonathan Mitchell is this year’s technical director and is getting help from, sophomore, An Pham as stage manager.

After the Fall production closes three to four student directors, who are chosen by Artistic Director Otto Layman and the previous directors, move right into auditions and casting.

From there they move into rehearsals in the same format as a normal SBHS production.

The show has grown tremendously over the years, and now has the same stature and attendance of our main stage shows--which is an enormous source of pride to the theatre staff.

Once the game went into its tenth inning, the Cubs scored their final two runs. The Indians scored one more run before Chicago was finally able to put them completely out of business.

By the time the game was over, most Cubs fans were sweating and/or crying tears of joy. All in all, the Cub’s victory might just have been the most positive and inspiring thing to happen during the year 2016.
